SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Moderately paced, and may include some early morning hotel departures, one or two on-tour flights, and extended motor coach travel.

Cultural journeys and expeditions

Step back in time to ancient Greece and sail to fabulous destinations steeped in legend, lore and sunshine and enjoy lovely sunsets over the Aegean Sea as our cruise blends ancient with modern in a kaleidoscope of discoveries both mythic and epic...

See for yourself what small ship cruising is all about, ephesus' library of celsus.

Although the ancient city of Ephesus, in what is now Turkey, was originally built by the Greeks in the 10th century AD, much of the ruins you'll see at the site today date to the city's Roman period – like the famed Library of Celsus, constructed in the 2nd century AD to memorialize a Roman governor of Asia. Only the facade of this remarkable building has survived, but restored and re-erected, it is a stunning example of Roman urban architecture.

Hotel Grande Bretagne

Eternal elegance in athens' ancient heart.

Situated right in the heart of Athens since 1874, the five-star, landmark Hotel Grande Bretagne offers an unrivalled perspective of the Greek capital's mythical history, with breathtaking views of the fabled Acropolis, regal Syntagma Square and the Parliament, lush Lycabettus Hill or the original Olympic Stadium. A favorite of celebrities and dignitaries for more than 140 years, this historic hotel is also within walking distance of exclusive shopping areas, museums and the business district.

From beginning to end, a fabulous vacation and a wonderful experience. The organization, itinerary and ship was superb.

Tauck River Cruises: Is Tauck the Best River Cruise Line For You?

tauck tours cruises

Tauck is located at the upper end of the river cruise spectrum, providing cruisers with an all-inclusive luxury experience on Europe's waterways. Tauck river cruises were born out of Tauck Travel, which also provides land tours around the world.

Tauck's approach to river cruising is similarly comprehensive to its land trips. There's a cruise director and three Tauck guides, special events held onshore in the evening and "lagniappe" (i.e. surprise) moments throughout the tours.

Tauck River Cruises: A Unique Nine-Ship Fleet

tauck tours cruises

Tauck has nine riverboats, owned and operated by Scylla, a Swiss-owned company; while the only Tauck employees are the cruise director and guides, Tauck dictates the experience.

Most new river cruise ships in Europe are a standard 443 feet, and carry closer to 190 passengers. However, Tauck's four newer Inspiration-class vessels carry 130 passengers -- the lowest number of passengers for a ship of its size.

Starting in 2017, the line has been revamping its five older Jewel-class ships, which are smaller than the Inspiration vessels, reducing the capacity from 118 to 98. Once complete, Tauck will no longer distinguish ships by "class."

Tauck river cruises sail on the major European rivers: Rhine , Main , Danube , Rhone , Seine and Moselle .

Tauck River Cruises: Why You'll Love Being Aboard Tauck Cruises

All-inclusive pricing onboard.

Unless you buy something in the shop or get a (reasonably priced, by spa standards) salon treatment or massage, your balance will be zero. Tauck's fares cover all beverages, including wine, beer and spirits, all day long and at meals; at least one shore excursion per day; alternative dining options; bikes to use in port; free Wi-Fi; airport transfers and gratuities.

Choice in Dining-- and Free Lunches During Long Port Excursions

Tauck offers diners an open seating in the main dining room and an excellent alternative restaurant called Arthur's where you can get a wide variety of made-to-order items. With such options, Tauck makes it really easy to eat what you want, when you want.

In addition, the line gives you money to buy lunch at a local cafe during long port excursions, which no one else in the river cruise industry does.

Sophisticated and Pleasant Decor

tauck tours cruises

Some cruise lines interpret luxury as over-the-top materials that conjure images of an English country house, while others confuse it with formality. At Tauck, the vibe is neither of the two.

Instead, the ships are quietly upscale and elegant, with tasteful chandeliers and ironwork in the lobby, neutral colors in the cabins and ceiling molding in the lounge (along with the best bar napkins we've ever seen at sea).

Tauck river cruises keep the decor tasteful and classy for all cruisers' enjoyment.

A More Intimate Atmosphere than Other Cruise Lines

Tauck's ships are the same size as those run by other cruise lines. In Europe, the length of vessels is mostly dictated by the lock system. Yet Tauck carries far fewer passengers than its competitors, with 130 compared to 150 or 190.

The lower numbers make a noticeable difference. Lounges and restaurants feel less crowded, the cruise director is more available and shore excursions have smaller groups. A Tauck tour is a comprehensive package that allows travelers to experience new places.

Assistance When Needed

tauck tours cruises

On Tauck shore excursions, the tour directors are right there with you: changing batteries for QuietVoxes (a personal hearing device that makes listening to the tour guide much easier), making lunch or dinner recommendations in town or pointing out the best shops.

If you're the type of person who worries a bit about travel yet still wants some independence, Tauck offers the ideal mix. Tauck river cruises provide assistance while still allowing cruisers some independence during their travels.

Each Tauck river cruise gives travelers unique experiences with their Tauck tour package. Excursions are included in the package for each cruiser's enjoyment.

Tauck River Cruises: Why Tauck Cruises May Not Be the Best For You

tauck tours cruises

High-End Pricing

There's a price for all those inclusions -- and Tauck's cost is definitely at the high end of river cruising.

Teetotaling

All alcoholic drinks are available all the time on Tauck, plus the line often has wine tastings and excursions that focus on local beer and spirits. You might resent paying for other people's bar bills if you don't drink.

Tauck Dress Code

tauck tours cruises

Tauck is less dressy than ocean cruises , but there are a handful of events, such as the Welcome Dinner, a Gala Dinner and special events offshore, where a jacket for men and a nice dress for women is appropriate.

If the idea of making an effort to dress doesn't appeal to you on such a port-intensive vacation, consider looking at a line that doesn't have these types of events.

Wonderful trip. Great leader and fun people in our group. To be able to stay within the national parks is bonus.

We booked a trip in 2019. Then Covid hit. We lost our $1800 deposit. Will not be booking another trip with them ever, but we're still getting catalogs, reminding us of our bad experience.

Photo of Roger M.

I have done 5 trips and they all were great. If you want a better than average tour then this is the one to choose.

We just returned from our first Tauck tour to England, Scotland and Wales and cannot say enough about what a terrific trip it was. Tauck is a first-class operation; handles virtually every detail and makes it a fun, enlightening, unforgettable experience. Most of the folks on our tour were big-time Tauck repeat customers and I can see why. I wasn't sure I was cut out for a group tour but now I'm starting to think about which Tauck tour we'll take next.

Photo of Dave R.

First time Tuack Tour, Essence of Japan. It will be my last. Spent more than 45k and they handled flight booking. They booked international layover outbound with 40 min window. Not surprisingly my bags, clothes and medicine didn't arrive for 30 hours. They acknowledged their fault in email but Guest Relations tone deaf. They offered small cash refund and future credit on next tour. Won't be a "next tour ". It was once a great brand but they have lost their feel for customer retention. If you use them, book your own travel and save money and aggravation.

Photo of Gary F.

We have taken 4 trips with this company in the past 7 years. They have meet or exceeded our expectations on all 4 trips. We have made lasting friends on a couple of these trips. In sharing the travel with then strangers, in multiple instances we have never laughed so hard. Good guides, and well balanced itineraries.

Photo of Laura W.

I just spoke with customer service. The most horrible service ever. I have never been on a cruise nor do I have any desire. Yet I continue to receive junk mail on a regular basis. I have called to have my name removed several time and it does not good. Customer Service has no follow through. I would never recommend this company as they are killing our planet by sending junk mail daily. DID YOU KNOW: * 5.6 million tons of catalogs and other direct mail advertisements end up in U.S. landfills annually. * 44 percent of junk mail is thrown away unopened, but only half that much junk mail is recycled. * The average American household receives 848 pieces of junk mail, which equals 1.5 trees every year and more than 100 million trees for all U.S. households combined. That's the equivalent of deforesting all of Rocky Mountain National Park every four months. * Largely due to deforestation, junk mail manufacturing creates as much greenhouse gas emissions annually as 3.7 million cars.

After reading recent reviews, as a virgin cruiser, I would not book this operator if they were the last cruise on earth. Horrific reviews! Save your time reading them all, I already did. You've been warned.

Photo of Alice S.

Sad to see a once good tour company stumble and fall into mediocrity. That's Tauck post-Covid. My May 2023 tour of Normandy, Brittany and the Loire Valley was done on the cheap by Tauck, yet cost me thousands of dollars extra as a solo traveler on a special small-group tour. 5-star hotels switched to 3 and 4 (without any compensation or explanation)... many more meals "on your own"... lots of "self-guided" tours of museums and chateaux and castles we knew nothing about... airline quality "rubber chicken" dinners, not in hotel restaurants, but in sad and isolated business convention spaces... poorly-trained newer Tour Directors (like the one on this tour) with limited experience traveling outside her tiny Canadian village or dealing with people from diverse backgrounds. She even confessed that this was a second gig job that took her away from her own business back home! You get what Tauck pays for, but unfortunately, not what YOU pay for. Speaking to a "Guest Relations" agent was comically pointless. She tried to make everything my fault, which I now understand is par for the course with the "new" post-Covid Tauck. Please reconsider spending huge amounts of your hard-earned money on a tour company that has lost its way and no longer delivers.

10 hot river cruises to book this year

Donna Heiderstadt

There are classic river itineraries — the Danube, the Rhine, the Rhone and the Nile — that anyone who appreciates the ease and camaraderie of river cruising can book with most of the top cruise lines. But those aren't your only options.

The most exciting river cruises to book this year are the new offerings that go off the beaten path, explore an unsung river or combine a standard seven-night sailing with a novel land tour.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Here are 10 new itineraries for 2024 and 2025 that are taking river cruising beyond the familiar, including several on recently launched or soon-to-debut river ships.

AmaWaterways' 7-night Wonders of Colombia and Magic of Colombia

tauck tours cruises

Love South America but have already cruised the Amazon? Consider AmaWaterways ' newest ship, AmaMagdalena. Debuting in January 2025, the 60-passenger ship will sail two alternating seven-night itineraries year-round on Colombia's Magdalena River, traveling from Cartagena to Barranquilla and vice versa.

With the Wonders of Colombia itinerary , you'll board AmaMagdalena in coastal Cartagena, a popular Caribbean port on Panama Canal transits that you can now also enjoy on a river cruise. Arrive a day early or book a two-night precruise add-on to see sights such as the historic Walled City, San Felipe de Barajas Castle and the Gold Museum.

Following a sunset sail away, immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and tastes of Colombia via a local music experience in Palenque, the first "free town" in the Americas after a 1713 decree from the Spanish crown freed residents from slavery. You can also check out 19th-century Calamar on a paola (a two-person bicycle taxi) and the jazz music and local handicrafts available in Santa Barbara de Pinto and Mompox.

El Banco and Magangue round out the list of port calls before the cruise ends with a tour of the floating village of Nueva Venecia and an evening Carnival celebration in the seaside port of Barranquilla.

Choose the Magic of Colombia itinerary , from Barranquilla to Cartagena, and you'll visit the same ports, just in a different order. Rather than end your cruise with the Carnival celebration, you'll experience it on your first day. You can also book several precruise and postcruise land tours, including three nights precruise in Medellin, three nights postcruise in Panama or both.

AmaMagdalena will be joined in June 2025 by 64-passenger AmaMelodia. Both vessels will offer spacious (237- to 516-square-foot) staterooms and suites, as well as a heated pool on the sun deck and two dining options: the main restaurant, serving Latin American cuisine and Western favorites, and an intimate alfresco dining experience.

American Cruise Lines ' itineraries on the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington already attract travelers who appreciate the stunning landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, but now the cruise line has a 15-night National Parks & Legendary Rivers itinerary that takes scenic appreciation to another level.

The trip combines an eight-night cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers with a seven-night land tour to three national parks: Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton. The itinerary visits five states and begins or ends in either Portland, Oregon, or Jackson, Wyoming, depending on whether you do the land or cruise portion first.

What will you see on this cruise? If you start in Portland, you'll overnight before boarding one of the company's modern, 180-passenger river ships: American Jazz, American Harmony or American Song. Your first day will be spent enjoying scenic cruising along the Columbia River, with Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens as a backdrop, as you head to Astoria, Oregon. The historic seaside city is known for its beautiful Victorian houses and red trolleys.

Geology enthusiasts and anyone who remembers the devastating May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens will be fascinated by the port call in Kalama, Washington, where you can take an included guided excursion to the National Volcanic Monument. The following day will be spent cruising the Columbia River Gorge before you arrive in Stevenson, Washington, where a visit to 620-foot Multnomah Falls is a highlight. The final two days feature views of the dramatic landscapes of the Snake River in eastern Washington as you call on Richland before disembarking in Clarkston.

The guided national parks tour begins with a drive to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, for a lake cruise followed by an overnight in Kalispell, Montana. Once in Glacier National Park, you'll navigate Going-to-the-Sun Road and dine at the historic Lake McDonald Lodge.

The tour continues on to Yellowstone National Park, where your adventure guides will offer insight as you explore Mammoth Hot Springs, Norris Geyser Basin, Tower Fall and Old Faithful, among other highlights. A visit to Grand Teton National Park and its Jackson Lake Lodge follows, with your final day spent admiring the park's incredible mountain vistas and abundant wildlife.

tauck tours cruises

If 15 nights aren't enough to satisfy your wanderlust, American Cruise Lines offers a 50-night version of The Great United States program for 2025.

The 2025 sailing encompasses three cruises. It takes the 15-night National Parks & Legendary Rivers itinerary described above and adds a 21-night Mississippi River cruise from New Orleans to St. Paul, Minnesota, aboard 180-passenger American Serenade, which will call on 21 ports in six states. Along the Mississippi, you'll have a chance to visit Civil War battlefields in Vicksburg, Mississippi; Mark Twain's boyhood home in Hannibal, Missouri; and the landmark Gateway Arch in St. Louis. You can also enjoy legendary blues music on Beale Street in Memphis.

That segment will be followed by a 14-night, 14-port cruise along the coast of New England on 125-passenger American Pioneer (debuting in 2025). The ship will sail round-trip from Boston and visit scenic coastal ports in Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, including the quintessential New England islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

Tour options will include visits to the Maine Botanical Garden in Boothbay Harbor and Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, an SUV adventure along the dunes of Provincetown on Cape Cod and a tour of the gilded mansions of Newport in Rhode Island.

Avalon Waterways' 7-night Vida Portugal: Vineyards & Villages Along the Douro

tauck tours cruises

Portugal's Douro River Valley is beloved by oenophiles. Over the past few decades, it has also attracted river cruisers seeking a relaxing itinerary punctuated by sleepy small towns and the daily enjoyment of local food and wine.

In March 2024, Avalon Waterways added the Douro River to its offerings when it debuted 102-passenger Avalon Alegria sailing an itinerary called Vida Portugal: Vineyards & Villages Along the Douro . The seven-night cruise is round trip from Porto, where there's time at the start and end of your cruise to explore this colorful city's historic port-wine cellars, churches and bridges (including the Ponte de Dona Maria Pia, designed in 1877 by Gustave Eiffel).

Noteworthy stops range from an afternoon call on Porto Antigo, with included excursions to monasteries and churches in Braga and Guimaraes, to a call at Peso de Regua, where sightseeing and wine tasting go hand in hand. You'll even have an opportunity to add an optional excursion from Pinhao to the elaborate 18th-century Baroque palace Casa de Mateus (of rose wine fame).

Save time for the onboard activities, too. After a full-day excursion from Barca d'Alva to Salamanca, Spain — a city known for its mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural styles — you can learn how to paint azulejos (Portugal's famous blue-hued handmade tiles) or enjoy a pastry-making demonstration on the ship the next morning.

Germany is known for its scenic river valleys, and a new itinerary from French river cruise line CroisiEurope doesn't skimp on beautiful vistas. Called A Cruise Through Four Exquisite European Valleys , the seven-night, round-trip sailing departs from Strasbourg, France, and visits the Rhine, Neckar, Moselle and Saar river valleys.

The ship for this itinerary, 81-passenger Elbe Princesse II, is one of CroisiEurope's three paddle river boats. It normally navigates the Elbe River between Berlin and Prague. However, from July to October 2025, the ship will be cruising the Rhine and its tributaries.

This river cruise kicks off on the Saar River, famous for the Great Bend at Mettlach (the river equivalent of a hairpin turn), and overnights in the town of Saarburg, Germany. After a morning scenic cruise onto the Moselle River, you'll visit Trier, Germany, known for its ancient Roman structures and its photogenic medieval buildings, before continuing on to Cochem, Germany, where you can enjoy an afternoon visit to the hilltop Reichsburg Castle.

Larger cities like Koblenz, Germany, located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers and home to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, are also on the itinerary. The trip features a stop in wine-centric Rudesheim, Germany, as well, so you can sample some vino and enjoy a ride on a scenic train while in the Rhine Valley.

The final day calls on a trio of German ports on the Neckar River. In the morning, you'll visit Mannheim and disembark for a coach transfer to Heidelberg, home to pink-hued Heidelberg Castle, historic churches and atmospheric beer halls. You'll embark Riverside Debussy in Hungary's capital before cruising past the illuminated Hungarian Parliament Building on your way to Bratislava. The capital of Slovakia is home to a hilltop castle, a walkable pedestrian zone and pubs serving local beer.

The next day, discover the history and artistry of Vienna with visits to its Hapsburg-era palaces, 16th-century St. Stephen's Cathedral and numerous museums. Charming Durnstein, Austria, is known for its medieval castle and a riverfront abbey with a pretty blue-and-white spire, while the golden-hued abbey in nearby Melk, Austria, celebrates the flavor of apricots in preserves and liquors.

As you reach Passau, Germany, which sits on the confluence of three rivers, you'll enter Bavaria and discover a walkable city with a domed 17th-century Baroque cathedral. The next day on the Main River (a Rhine tributary), you'll tour Regensburg, Germany, including its UNESCO World Heritage-listed city center, before spending two days exploring Nuremberg, Germany, which has a notably complex history.

LATTE - Luxury Australian Travel Trade E-news

MS Caledonian Sky to exit Captain Cook Cruises Fiji fleet

Small ship operator to pivot to day cruising/dinner voyage program.

Go back to the e-newsletter

Captain Cook Cruises Fiji has confirmed a realignment of its business that will see voyages aboard the luxury expedition ship MS Caledonian Sk y conclude with the brand in early November 2024, LATTE can exclusively reveal. The company took over the operation of Caledonian Sky from APT in early November last year , introducing a new level of expedition cruising in the remote waters of Fiji, including the rarely visited Lau Islands in the Southern Pacific.

Speaking exclusively with LATT E, Allison Haworth West, Executive Chair said the “strategic step” to wind down operation of the small ship comes as Captain Cook Cruises Fiji pivots to focus on its core business of island day cruising and dinner voyages.

“ Caledonian Sky has been a runaway success,” Haworth West said. “The ship, the destination and the crew have received outstanding feedback from guests for the rich, cultural experience that Captain Cook Cruises Fiji provides onboard the small ship. We look forward continuing our schedule of 7- and 14-night expeditions to remote Fiji and Tonga until November.”

“The vision for Caledonian Sky was to bring luxury cruising to the outer islands. Our passenger loads have been building and capacity has steadily grown.

“The program struck a chord with the expedition market and has been successful, filling a void in that niche market,” Haworth West explained, adding that the project was also supported by the Fijian Government.

“We’ve opened up tourism interaction like never before,” she added.

The departure of Caledonian Sky from the fleet, along with the company’s previous smaller vessel, Reef Endeavour , leaves a hole in the small ship sector for Captain Cook Cruises Fiji for the time being,

Haworth West confirmed the final sailing of the 114-passenger ship with CCC Fiji will depart on 26 October 2024. Guests who have sailings booked beyond November 2024 are being contacted by the boutique cruise line or via their travel advisor to offer alternative arrangements, including a cabin upgrade on an earlier departure.

The company is also offering a ‘Stay 7, Pay’ 4 promotion on Caledonian Sky .

The final voyage operated under Captain Cook Cruises Fiji for the vessel will be the 7-day Ultimate Lau & Kadavu sailing on Saturday 26 October 2024. View the remaining schedule, updated on 20 June 2024, here .

Danube River Cruises

Our Danube river cruises include wine tasting at private vineyards... visits to medieval towns and riverside castles... and private palace evenings that come alive with music and merriment.

Danube River Cruising

  • ITINERARIES
  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to the Danube River

This picturesque "river of kings" carves a winding path through a total of ten modern-day European nations with landscapes characterized by vineyards, forested slopes, wine-producing villages and imposing fortresses that remain a testimony to kingdoms and culture... regal, romantic and ready to welcome Tauck river cruisers.

Tauck exclusive – imperial evening at palais pallavicini, our gala imperial evening at a private palace in vienna.

Built in 1784, the sumptuous Palais Pallavicini is a grand private palace in the heart of Vienna whose magnificent Baroque touches transport you to another time. Join us at the Palais for a gala evening featuring a reception, dinner and classical performances sure to sweep you off your feet... and let you experience firsthand how Europe's cultured classes lived and were entertained centuries ago. And film fans will note that the Palais and its elegant facade served as rogue Harry Lime's postwar Vienna apartment in the Cold War classic "The Third Man."

Bicycling along the Danube

What could be better than a leisurely bicycle ride along the danube.

A leisurely bicycle ride through countryside along the Danube River with your local guide is a perfect way to experience the centuries-old castles and lush vineyards of the Wachau Valley wine-growing region – declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved medieval landscapes. Our river cruises offer numerous opportunities for cycling along Europe's rivers; every Tauck riverboats has bicycles aboard for use by guests ashore.

Passau, Germany

Beautiful, baroque passau, the "city of three rivers".

The charming Bavarian riverside city of Passau – situated at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube rivers – is the kind of town in which you'll set off on a walking tour with a local guide… and your guide's passion for his or her hometown makes your visit that much more special. Must-sees in this "City of Three Rivers" include the 17th-century Baroque Dom St. Stephan (St. Stephan's Cathedral), with its magnificent pipe organ – the largest in Europe – and the 14th-century Town Hall. Enjoy time on your own exploring Passau's pedestrian walkways through tunnels and archways and along ancient cobblestone streets, to find its wealth of Baroque architecture and beautiful churches, many of which are known for their exquisite stained glass.

Austria's Wachau Valley

The joys of austria's wachau valley along the danube.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved medieval landscapes, the Wachau Valley, formed by the Danube River in Austria, invites a leisurely cruise past the lush vineyards of one of the country's premier wine regions… fairy-tale castles… ancient monasteries, like famed Melk Abbey, with its Baroque "facelift" from the 18th-century… and typical, post-card perfect villages like Dürnstein. Take a closer look at its Baroque houses and Romanesque church as you stroll down its one main street… then challenge yourself to an invigorating climb up centuries-old steps to the ruins of hilltop Kuenringerburg Castle, where England's King Richard the Lionhearted was once held for ransom by Austria's Duke Leopold V. The views from up here say all that need to be said about the Wachau Valley…

Hungarian State Opera, Budapest

Enjoy a special tauck visit to budapest's opulent hungarian state opera house.

Andrássy Avenue in the Pest section of Budapest is lined with grandiose public buildings. One of them is the Hungarian State Opera House, commissioned by Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph and opened in 1884; its imposing façade is adorned with statues of great composers like Beethoven, Verdi and Mozart, and Hungarian favorite sons Ferenc Erkel and Franz Liszt greet you at the main entrance. The Emperor himself only attended one event here, but the imprint of his wife, the Empress Elisabeth (known fondly to her subjects as "Sisi"), a great patron of the arts and of the opera in particular, is all over the place – from the general grandeur of its interiors to the private box in which she attended many performances. If you love opera, this is the place to hear it, enjoying some of the best acoustics in Europe. But even if you don't, its sheer opulence makes it a must-see.

Inspired by the Destination

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

Expeditions

Expedition-style cruise experiences provide today's "explorers" a unique window through which to view the often unseen world and some of Earth's rarest wildlife.

Small Ship Expedition Cruises

  • ITINERARIES
  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to Expeditions

Exotic lands are best explored in the time-honored way, from the sea to the shore. Sail aboard modern and magnificent expeditionary ships as you cast anchor on timeless, remote islands... as you navigate ice floes to stand on the ethereal seventh continent... as you observe rare or endangered wildlife... And once you sail where explorers before you sailed, your world is forever changed.

Designed for up-close exploration of wildlife-rich shores, each expeditionary cruise offer hands-on, eyes-open revelations of often unseen worlds in regions such as the remote islands of the Galápagos... in the Tracy Arm Fjord, with its sheer cliffs and towering waterfalls... on landings in the amazing Antarctic archipelago...

Amazing San Cristóbal Island

San cristóbal island, home to the rarest of the rare.

When you cruise to San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos Archipelago , you'll encounter wildlife you won't find anywhere else on Earth – on shore excursions aboard panga (Zodiac-style rafts) for "wet landings" in shallow water or dry landings on rocky beaches. At Cerro Colorado, the breeding center of giant Galápagos Tortoises, you'll see some of the ongoing conservation efforts underway to save these endangered behemoths... although the elusive tortoises, who nap up to 16 hours a day, are not easy to spot in the wild. Not so with Galápagos sea lions, however; chances are good that you'll find yourself splashing around in the water with some of these sociable, whiskered locals.

Wildlife of the Galápagos Islands

Wildlife cruise.

Sitka, Alaska

Sea Otter & Wildlife Cruise

A 3-hour cruise in Sitka provides a remarkable opportunity to observe sea otters, whales, sea lions, porpoise, harbor seals, brown bears, blacktail deer, bald eagles and a variety of marine birds, with commentary from an onboard naturalist explaining the workings of this remarkable ecosystem. The waterjet-driven tour vessel has been designed to navigate Southeast Alaska's narrow island passages, allowing for wildlife viewing at close range.

Exploring Antarctica's Archipelago

A magical place whose mystical allure fascinates and forever beckons to return....

The magnificent great white continent of Antarctica, the most remote place on Earth, astounds with glacial landscapes and Arctic wildlife that defy description… and you enjoy a rare opportunity to view them up-close with on-board experts who have spent a lifetime studying these natural wonders in extraordinary detail. Due to changing weather and shifting glacial patterns of this remote region, your day-by-day itinerary will vary and may include Zodiac excursions to Antarctic Peninsula islands. Penguins, seals, whales and myriad species of seabirds are often seen on land and at sea; our on-board naturalists can help you identify them during your cruise.

Small is Big... onboard and ashore

Smaller ships mean bigger experiences. Our small ships are big on individualized service, special touches and comfort, making you feel like a welcomed guest the moment you come aboard. Intimate spaces invite conversation or quiet contemplation as you like. Whether you're inside your cabin or out on your deck, ocean views beckon with adventures yet to come.

Because of the size of our ships, we're not restricted to commercial routes or large ports. We're free to follow the fish, not the fleets. We dock in places where you can get lost in the moment and not in a crowd. We delight in sharing spontaneous moments, up-close discoveries, personal connections and unforgettable treasures, making each moment memorable and uniquely yours. At Tauck, small is big... and the best way to make your cruise so much more than you ever expected.

Extraordinary Expeditions Around the World

Designed for up-close exploration of wildlife-rich shores, each expeditionary cruise offer hands-on, eyes-open revelations of often unseen worlds in regions such as Svalbald, Norway... where there are more polar bears than people... in the Tracy Arm Fjord with its sheer cliffs and towering waterfalls... and as you sail through the Panama Canal, an engineering feat that revolutionized shipping patterns and is still a source of fascination to this day.

Arctic allure: spitsbergen and the midnight sun, alaska's inside passage, the panama canal & costa rica, traveling with tauck, uncommon access.
