How to Visit the Douro Valley from Porto

Just a few hours away from Porto, there’s no question that if you’re in this city, even for just a couple of days, that a trip to the Douro Valley is well worth it.

The port capital of Portugal (and therefore the world!), this gorgeous valley is awash with small independent wineries, whose vined-laden fields slope down (like the red roofs of the houses) towards the beautiful Douro River.

Even if you’re not into port or wine tasting, then trust me, the Douro is worth visiting just to see the lovely landscape and a very different side of Portugal.

And if you have more time, spending a night or 2 in the Douro Valley is also a wonderful option – summertime camping will really allow you to explore the traditional villages of this area, while cosying up around an Airbnb fireplace in the winter provides the perfect retreat – it’s all up for grabs in this gorgeous port of Portugal.

So help you discover the best way to get there, here’s my ultimate guide on how to visit the Douro Valley from Porto, including transport routes, types of trips and the highlights of the region you can’t miss!

How to Travel from Porto to the Douro Valley

Portugal, Douro, Bridge

So the first thing to think about, is how you want to get from Porto to the Douro Valley, as the mode of transport you opt for will pretty much dictate all the other trip elements covered in this article – including your length of stay, what you do and how long you spend there.

That’s why I’m going to start by discussing how to travel from Porto to the Douro Valley – going through the options one by one and then summarising them, before following up with some of my top tips for visiting this beautiful Portuguese region.

So let’s get stuck in…

Portugal, Douro, By Car

If you have your own vehicle in Portugal, or if you’ve rented one to road trip the country, then you’ll be pleased to know it’s both quick and easy to drive to the Douro Valley from Porto.

In fact, this journey only takes around 90 minutes and once you get out of the city and into the countryside, you’ll pass charming villages that really show an authentic slice of local life here.

You also don’t really need to worry about parking in the Douro – most vineyards have their own parking and in general, the towns are easy to find a spot in.

The main thing to consider if you want to drive from Porto to the Douro Valley therefore, is how much wine and port you want to taste. Drink driving is not cool folks.

It’s also dangerous and illegal.

This means if you want to hit up the vineyards hard, I don’t recommend driving as part of a day trip to the Douro Valley from Porto, but rather it would be better to drive as part of an overnight or 2 day trip, where you can have a drink, relax and not have to worry about getting behind the wheel until the next day.

Driving 3 hours to the Douro Valley and back is also a significant chunk of time out of your day trip, so if you have a car, I really do recommend spending at least one night out here.

This is what I opted for when I actually built a visit to the Douro Valley into my journey (by car) from Lisbon to Porto.

This was part of an ideal Portugal itinerary I got to experience, because visiting the Douro as a stop between Lisbon and Porto means you a) don’t have to double back on yourself, but also b) get a bit of break between city sightseeing, which makes for a more varied and leisurely trip in my opinion.

After all, who could resist road tripping the thin, winding and quaint roads of the Douro Valley with those expansive views of crisscrossed sloping vineyards and a blue river snaking its way through them.

Pair this with a cloudless sky and a dollop of sunshine and you’ve got Portuguese perfection in my book!

By Private Transfer

Portugal, Douro, Vineyards

If you want to venture privately into the Douro Valley from Porto, but don’t want to hire a car, then there are private transfers available too.

These are probably best negotiated directly with your hotel in Porto.

Of course, this isn’t going to be the cheapest way of doing things, but it does provide you with flexibility and the ability to totally tailor your Douro Valley trip.

Portugal, Porto, Train

So the second option when it comes to travelling from Porto to the Douro Valley is by public transport – namely by train or bus. This is a good choice for those who don’t have access to a car or don’t want to drive.

Now if you’ve read my article about how to travel from Lisbon to Porto , you’ll know that the train station in the centre of historic Porto – São Bento – is a suburban station, with connections to the local region only.

And this means you’re in luck!

Yes, the Porto São Bento station is the one that has trains connecting you straight with the Douro Valley.

The last stop in the valley is the town of Pocinho, which is just over 170km away.

If you want a shorter journey, then the towns of Régua or Pinhão, still in the Douro Valley but closer to Porto, also make good hopping off points.

Personally however, I’d recommend travelling all the way to Pocinho on one of the 5 daily trains – these take about 3.5 hours, but are defo worth it in my opinion!

Because yes, if you’re thinking about visiting the Douro Valley from Porto, then it pays to know this is probably the most scenic train journey you can enjoy in the whole of Portugal.

Following the river basically the whole way, this inter-regional local train service is a delightful way to take in the lovely landscapes (the most picturesque section is between Tua & Pocinho in my opinion) and is ideal for those who are into holidays pitched at a more leisurely pace!

I really think, therefore, that it makes sense to stay overnight in the Douro Valley if you’re using public transport to get there.

You can then also enjoy a unique way to get back to Porto… but more on that in a bit!

Portugal, Douro Valley, Views

It pays to know that as well as a train from Porto to the Douro Valley, there’s also a bus, which makes a good second public transport option if you’re looking to visit this vineyard area from the city.

Similarly priced as the train, most buses only go as far as Régua however, so if you’re looking to go beyond this – which you should IMO – the train is probably the better option.

The bus also takes the same amount of time as the train and certainly doesn’t promise as picturesque a ride – it’s not along the river – but if you still want to check out prices and times have a look here .

In general however, I’d go for the train unless there aren’t any train seats left (unlikely) or you’re choosing to opt for a tour to the Douro instead (more likely).

Opting for this latter choice, might mean a bus is mandatory, but don’t worry you will get a boat ride too! ….

Portugal, Porto, Boat on River

Because yes, yet another way you can get from Porto to the Douro Valley is via a boat ride – how lovely!

If you book a boat ride independently, have a number of options…

#1 You can sail from Porto to Régua or Pinhão and then use public transport to get back to the city.

#2 Or you can do the reverse – you can book a train or bus to either Régua or Pinhão and then boat back to the city.

#3 You can also build customised options where you say bus to Régua, sail to Pinhão and then train back to Porto.

All 3 of these options can be undertaken in a day or can be built in an itinerary that includes an overnight stay in the Douro.

Book your independent boat rides, in person, down at the Vila Nova de Gaia’s Quay in Porto.

Otherwise, you can also take Douro Valley tour cruises, which are suited more towards those who want to enjoy the scenery of the Douro Valley, rather than the port tastings.

Usually lunch is served onboard and you definitely get to enjoy the views from the deck.

Here’s some top-rated choices…

  • From Porto: Régua and Douro Valley Scenic Cruise
  • From Porto: Pinhão and Douro Valley Scenic Boat Tour

By Group Tour

Portugal, Douro, Port Tasting

You can also visit the Douro Valley from Porto as part of a tour package.

These are generally day trips from Porto that include return transport to and from the city, plus a number of activities, such as a river cruise, vineyard visit and even, in some cases, lunch!

Check out these recommended options…

  • Porto: 3 Douro Valley Vineyards Tour with Lunch
  • From Porto: Douro Valley Full-Day Wine Trip with Lunch
  • Full-Day Douro Wine Tour with Lunch and River Cruise
  • Porto: Douro Valley Tour with Wine Tasting, Cruise and Lunch

By Private Tour

Portugal, Douro, Lamego Church

Alternatively, you can also take private tours to the Douro Valley from Porto.

Obviously these are more pricey, but do give you a greater degree of flexibility and a little splash of luxury if this is a special, romantic break!

Here’s my top picks…

  • Douro Valley: Private Wine Tasting and River Cruise
  • Douro Valley Private Full-Day Tour from Porto

How to Decide Which Type of Trip to Choose

Portugal, Douro, Winery

If you have your vehicle, it probably makes sense to self-drive to the Douro Valley – this will give you the flexibility to visit and stay where you like. You’ll also be able to drive and visit the vineyards of your choice – just remember to choose a designated non-drinking driver.

If you really want to go to town on the tastings, or you don’t access to a vehicle, then you have 2 choices – either an independent trip or a guided tour.

When you organise an independent trip, you can choose how to get to the Douro Valley via train, bus, boat or a combination of these. You can then choose how long you stay (day trip or overnight), as well as visit the vineyard visits you wish. Remember you’ll need to organise and book these visits and as well as the transport to get there, which is likely to either involve a local taxi or a vineyard tour like this one .

If you opt for an organised tour from Porto to the Douro Valley, then you don’t have to organise any of this. This makes a guided day trip – such as those I recommend above – an easy and cost-effective option, especially if you’re a solo traveller on a small group trip. It will allow you to also meet fellow travellers and to enjoy the highlights of the Douro Valley in a day.

What to Do in Douro Valley?

Portugal, Douro, Me

The main things to enjoy in the Douro Valley are the beautiful scenery – a boat cruise is a key way to do this – and to sample the ports and wines of some of the vineyards here.

The impressive Régua Dam Lock is also a must-see for engineer buffs and the cute little villages of this area are a great spot for cultural travellers.

Check out this post I wrote about the best vineyards to visit in the Douro Valley, plus everything you need to know about experiencing a tour and tasting with them, including how to book and get there.

How Long to Spend in the Douro?

Portugal, Douro, Port

In an ideal world, I suggest 2-3 nights for your trip to Porto and 1-2 nights for your time in the Douro Valley.

However, I totally get that most people don’t have an infinite amount of time they can enjoy their holiday in and therefore, need to tailor their plans inline with that!

As such, I’d really recommend spending at least one night in the Douro Valley and at least 2 nights in Porto – this will allow you to take in all the main highlights and get a good feel for both places.

Where to Stay in the Douro Valley?

Portugal, Douro, Lamego Camping

Here’s my top picks for places to stay in the Douro Valley, they might just convince you that at least 1 night here is a good idea!

  • Hotel Rural Quinta Do Pego – Top-rated and with a great price, this gem of a hotel has a pool with amazing valley views!
  • Encosta do Pinhao – A fab 3 bedroom rental home, sleeping up to 6 guests, very near to Pinhão train station.
  • Casa do Rio Wine Hotel – A real splurge, but staying on this vineyard near Pocinho, in the heart of the Douro, would be a real treat!
  • Lagares Douro Villas – If you want cute and remote, these stunning villas with amazing views could be just the answer!
  • The Pine House – Offering just 2 cute rooms in this local home, people love the quality and comfort of this place which is very close to Regua Train Station.
  • Casa de Sao Domingos – Also in Regua, choose from beautiful deluxe rooms and enjoy the pool!
  • Quinta da Salada – A rural tourism gem, this boutique farm stay offers gardens, terrace and an outdoor pool all near the lovely town of Lamego.
  • Camping Lamego – The best place to pull up for the night in the Douro if you have a motorhome or van. Great vibes, affordable and friendly.

When to Visit Porto and the Douro Valley?

Portugal, Douro, Views

It’s a good idea to think about when you might want to visit Porto and the Douro Valley and no question in my mind, that the best time to enjoy these 2 destinations is during the months of April through June, plus September and October.

This is when the warm weather will allow you to take full advantage of the region’s charm, but you won’t be wilting in the summer heat.

I visited the Douro Valley and Porto in September and found the climate ideal for sightseeing, wine tasting as well as cycling along the coast.

That being said, you will find Porto especially has something of a micro-climate, where sea fog can often roll in the morning! Don’t despair however, in the warmer months the sun usually burns it off by late morning.

Dear Yvonne, My wife and I plan to be in Porto (off of a cruise ship on Sunday, September 17). This was a very helpful article as I have identified a tour to the Douro Valley as my #1 choice of things to do there. My problem is that most of your recommendations are 9 or 10 hour trips. Unfortunately, our ship arrives at 9:00 am and departs at 7:00 pm, so even if I could find a tour that would pick us up at our ship, at 9:30 am, I would have to be back by (?) 6:00 pm. Any thoughts?

Have you thought of a private tour? Although it might be a little more expensive, you’ll be able to customize it to match your needs.

Hi, reading your article now. We are actually staying in the Douro Valley for 3 days so would like to book a small group tour one of those days, looks like most of the 9 hour tours leave from Porto though, would you recommend we even book a tour or just go on our own to wineries – we will have a rental car, and will be going to Porto for a day during one of those 3 days we are staying in the area.

If you already have a rental car, then I wouldn’t recommend a tour. Instead drive around to the main villages, and go to the wineries yourself.

Douro Valley Wine Tours from Porto Reviews

1. authentic douro wine tour including lunch and river cruise.

  • Duration: 9.5 Hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 8:30 AM
  • Includes:  Transportation and professional tour guide, small group up to 8 people, visit to 2 wineries, traditional lunch, 1-hour river cruise on traditional boat

This was the first wine tour I went on in Portugal, and it impressed me so much I felt that it deserved to be first on this comprehensive guide.

The Authentic Douro Wine Tour Including Lunch and River Cruise  felt like I was living in some type of fairytale, where time didn’t exist and all stress melted away. Of course, I’m sure the delicious wine helped a bit with that!

Okay, so this tour is a full-day experience starting out at 8:30 am, so we had all day long to enjoy the tranquil countryside in our small group setting.

This isn’t one of those tours where a massive crowd of people is following a guide around, struggling to try and hear and see what they’re talking about. Rather, this is an intimate setting with a maximum 8 participants allowed so everyone receives a personalized experience.

Once we were picked up from our hotel by our tour guide, we headed out on a brief trip to the Douro Valley as our guide told us fascinating stories about the area.

We made a quick stop at the majestic Peso da Regua to take some photos and videos before making our way to the first winery stop of the day.

Expand To See More See Less

In my case, it was Quinta do Tedo, which is an insane 18th-century estate right where the Douro and Tedo Rivers merge and is known for its house-style blended Ruby and Tawny Ports!

We had an educational wine-tasting session here before heading back on the road, stopping at the amazing Pinhão, which played a massive role in the commerce and transport of wine from Douro to Porto.

Finally, we ended up at Quinta do Beijo, where we tried even more wines while learning about how each one is produced and the differences between them.

Followed up with a serene boat ride down the river and an exquisite lunch at a traditional local restaurant (just keep in mind when weather isn’t ideal the boat ride can get quite rainy and windy so dress accordingly!).

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. private douro valley wine tour: 2 wine estates, lunch and cruise.

  • Duration: 8 Hours
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes: Lunch, Wine tasting, Professional guide, transport by air-conditioned minivan, Alcoholic Beverages, Guided visit to 2 wine estates with tastings of different wines and port

This next tour draws many similarities to the first, starting early in the morning and with a convenient hotel pickup so you don’t have to worry about any kind of transport.

The Private Douro Valley Wine Tour: 2 Wine Estates, Lunch and Cruise  shows off the absolute best the UNESCO Heritage Site has to offer, and that’s saying a lot considering there’s new beauty and adventure to experience around every corner.

If you’re looking for an enchanting, stress-free day away from the city, this experience should be near the top of your list!

After picking us up at our hotel in Porto, we drove out in our comfy air-conditioned minivan down the winding roads overlooking the beautiful landscape of the valley.

On our journey, our guide was there to animatedly narrate quite the comprehensive account of Portuguese history, how it came to be, and cultural insight.

We took my favorite kind of stop – a coffee break – to stretch our legs and enjoy the fresh air before continuing on Sabrosa, which is known for its basket weaving, embroidery, and cheesemaking!

Here, we ventured through 2 charming wineries where we were taught how they produce their wine, as well as some additional history behind the Douro Region.

The wine was incredible – probably  too  incredible – so I was glad we had a filling, tasty Portuguese 3-course lunch to balance it out. After fueling up, we set out to Pinhão where we took some photos at a spectacular viewpoint (honestly so much more impressive in person than in photos!).

We then boarded a traditional Rebelo boat for a nearly one-hour scenic cruise down the river, which was so tranquil and offered such a different perspective of the area than the viewpoints did!

Before visiting another famous winery in Folgosa, we drove down National Road 222, which I learned is considered to be the most beautiful road in the world! With so much beauty, great company, learning opportunities, and tasty wine and food, what’s not to love?!

3. Douro Valley All Included: Expert Guide, Boat, Lunch, Tastings

The excursion begins relatively early in the morning with a convenient pickup right from your hotel lobby, so you don’t have to worry about separate transportation.

Our air-conditioned coach was spacious, smooth, and with windows large enough to take in the views as we listened to our guide’s interesting commentary about the history and importance of wine in the area.

After some stops for coffee and to enjoy one of the most legendary lookouts over the Douro Valley, we headed down for a wonderful boat cruise in a traditional “Rabelo” which are what transported the wine barrels to Porto!

I love this kind of stuff – not only learning about it but being able to experience firsthand what countless people before me did. We even got the chance to drive the boat, which was a bit nerve-wracking at first, but so much fun!

After that, we enjoyed a filling traditional Portuguese lunch where we had time to relax and chat with the rest of our small group and our guide about what we’d experienced so far.

We also tried 2 different Douro DOC wines before heading to a magnificent wine tasting and gourmet olive oil tasting in Pinhão, which most tours did not offer! Last but not least, we followed it up with a visit to a 5-star wine producer where we learned firsthand everything from growing the grapes to bottling it!

4. Premium Small Group Douro Valley Wine Tour From Porto

  • Includes:  Transport in comfortable minivan, 3-course lunch, Douro DOC wines, guided visit to 2 premium wineries, wine tastings, English-speaking exclusive tour expert

Escape the bustling streets of Porto and embark on a luxurious adventure through the charming Douro Valley with this next meticulously crafted experience. Promising a day full of opulence, gorgeous landscapes, and unparalleled wine-tasting opportunities, no detail has been forgotten.

The Premium Small Group Douro Valley Wine Tour from Porto  is an exclusive excursion where you’ll be treated like a VIP, with a guide that feels more like a longtime friend than someone you just met!

Starting off early in the morning, the guide came to pick us up right from our hotel which was nice and convenient as we were bringing along jackets and small bags.

This is a small-group tour, but ours consisted of literally just the 4 of us in my party and one other person so it was super fun! We all became friends, and it felt like we were going on a little road trip while listening to our guide tell us all about the local history and culture.

We had a nice little minivan for the day, which was smaller than the coaches we’d taken on other tours but perfect for our group size and very comfortable. We made a few different stops along the way for coffee as well as taking in some of the most divine views.

There are plenty of charming little villages on the route, and it was amazing to get to cruise through these postcard-perfect places.

We got to enjoy guided tours of 2 different well-reputed wineries, where we got to learn about each of their winemaking processes, the history behind each, and try plenty of samples!

At this point I was ready for lunch, and we had an amazing selection of classic Portuguese dishes paired with either a white or red.

While the wine-tasting part is obviously not for everyone, I will say that this is a great tour option for the entire family to learn about and see this majestic region!

5. Douro Valley Tour with 3 Wineries Visits, 9 Wine Tastings, Lunch

  • Includes:  Transport by air-conditioned minivan, professional tour guide, tasting of 9 wines, traditional lunch, bottled water

If you’re looking for that best bang for your buck tour through any wine-lover’s paradise, look no further! The Douro Valley Tour with 3 Wineries Visits, 9 Wine Tastings, Lunch experience ticks all the boxes, taking you on an exclusive-access day through tastings of exquisite wines and ports.

This small-group tour offers the opportunity to engage with winemakers and professionals who will take you through the art of blending and aging these special wines to perfection.

Just like every other on this guide, this tour also includes a hotel pickup so you all you have to worry about is having fun and enjoying the view!

As we cruised over the beautiful, winding roads, our guide chatted with us about Portuguese history and culture, and how it’s tightly intertwined with wine.

As we made pretty good time, we were able to make a stop at the gorgeous Peso da Régua, which sits right on the banks of the river and has played a huge role in the production and transportation of Port wine.

We then arrived at Quinta do Tedo, which is one of the top wineries in the region and is where we they explained which wine was which and the differences between each.

Accompanied by a guided wine tasting, I felt like a bit of a pro afterward! We then went to the cute little village of Pinhão where we visited their historical railway station before moving on to Quinta da Roêda to try insane selections of Port during another guided tasting.

We couldn’t leave out the quaint Quinta do Beijo, where the actual owner of the property came out to give us a tour of the property and explain his production and flavor process!

I know it depends on the time available, but we got lucky and were able to do a quick visit to D’Origem for a tasting of DOC Douro wines as well as some olive oil! It was a fantastic day, and while it did last all day, it was an unforgettable journey!

The Douro Valley

The birthplace of Port wine

Visiting the Douro Valley – Wine tours from Porto

Visiting the douro valley region from porto, getting to the douro valley by train: peso da régua station or pinhão station, guided tours of the douro valley from porto.

The Douro Valley is a wine region of Portugal with more than two thousand years of existence . For centuries, grapes have been planted and harvested by hand on its steep terraces that end by the Douro river (hence the name).

This valley represents one of the most beautiful landscapes in Portugal .

Several reasons confer the Alto Douro wine-growing region the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO : its cultural importance, its fertile land and the particular climate, and the world-renowned quality of its wines.

It is also the oldest demarcated wine region in the world .

douro valley tours from porto

The Douro River originates in Spain, in Soria, where it is called the “Duero”, and flows into the Atlantic Ocean, on the coast of Matosinhos , very close to the center of Porto . Throughout its course, it crosses and joins the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula.

For the city of Porto, it is of special importance, as it has historically served as a promoter of trade flows, communicating the metropolis with several neighboring cities.

douro valley tours from porto

For the distribution of Port wine the river has been its main channel. Traditionally, it was through the waterway that the wine was transported from the Douro valley to the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia . Once aged, it is then marketed to the rest of the world.

This river trip was done decades ago in boats called Rabelos , and you can still admire them in the Douro River by the Dom Luis Bridge or in front of the wineries .

Today the grapes and wine are transported in small trucks that you can see moving around the Douro Valley, especially at the end of the summer, during the grape harvest season.

douro valley tours from porto

One question many visitors ask is about the types of wines that are produced? In the valley, not only port wine is made. The Douro Valley also produces some of the best red and white wines in Portugal and the world.

In Porto, you can visit the cellars , learn how the wines are produced, and enjoy a Port Wine tasting session .

However, it is in the Douro Valley Wineries where you can live the whole, real experience.

Visiting a “Quinta” (the Portuguese equivalent of estates, where grapes are grown), walk through its vineyards, enjoy the fantastic views, and taste the best wines of the Douro region, that's what you want to experience. And it is something we highly recommend doing as a day trip from the city.

On a road with unique landscapes, it takes about an hour and a half by car. The only disadvantage is that you won't be able to extend your tasting if you have to drive back.

Now, how far it's the Douro Valley from Porto? Short of 60 miles (97 km), and the trip, by car , is about 1 hour 15 minutes. But it really depends on where you're going to, because there are two main towns with wineries close to Porto.

Read below to find out where these are.

douro valley tours from porto

You can take the train from Campanhã station to Peso da Régua (Regua station).

The trip takes 2 hours each way and the ticket costs around 20€, depending on your choice.

There's another train station in the Douro, it's called “Pinhão” . It is within walking distance of two beautiful Quintas and restaurants.

Both trips can be booked within the cp.pt (“Trains of Portugal”).

Another terrific alternative, although more expensive than the regular train, is to get on the historic train in Peso da Régua , which goes to the area of Tua on the banks of the river in a steam locomotive built in 1925. See all the information on the official website . The disadvantage of this option is that the train arrives in the city center, and you have to find your way around the area.

You can also take a guided tour from Porto. Some companies use the bus, the train or even the river cruise. This alternative allows you to relax, better enjoy the experience and do the wine tasting without having to worry about driving back to Porto.

We booked a private Douro Valley tour for 4 with Joao and could not have asked for a better experience! Booking was easy with fast commutations from Norberto. Joao picked us up and was an amazing, knowledgeable and personal tour guide. We learned so much about Portugal’s history and culture. He shuttled us around all day in a nice air conditioned van. The boat ride was awesome (we had a little boat all to ourselves!) and lunch was at this amazing private little winery (they were wonderful about working with dietary restrictions). We also toured a second winery, where the owner gave the tour himself, and it was both funny and informative. Joao then dropped us off at the train station. It was such an incredible experience. Highly recommended! Thank you so much, Joao! We all enjoyed ourselves so much (probably had 11-12 different kinds of wine)!

Norberto provided us (two couples) a wonderful one-day experience touring the Douro Valley. Despite the rain, he ensured we saw spectacular views of the valley and enjoyed the tastings at two wineries and a one-hour boat ride on the river. We also had an amazing and delicious lunch experience at a very rustic restaurant. Norberto is an excellent guide who brings great knowledge and enthusiasm along with a wonderful sense of humor. We were impressed with his professionalism and for being so personable. He’s also a safe driver. I would highly recommend Norberto.

An amazing day trip with the best host Norberto! Super knowledgeable about the area and set us up with an itinerary that was exceptional. Thank you!

A Broken Backpack

Perfect Douro Valley Self Drive Tour

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Feb 24, 2023 | Europe , Portugal , Travel Tips

Portugal is full of amazing places to discover. If you’re planning a Portugal road trip, you must add Douro Region to your Portugal itinerary.

Douro Valley is also known for its vineyards, stunning landscapes, and river. Could you imagine yourself cruising on Douro River while trying the best Port wines out there?

Ready To Travel? Don't Go Without Travel Insurance.

Check Prices

Let me convince you!

Douro Region is located in the Northern part of Portugal. It’s quite big actually.

Some of us will prefer to cruise the Douro river directly from Porto, and some others will hop on a train or in their car and will explore a bit further.

If you’re only after breathtaking views, you will definitely enjoy the ride! You must see Douro Valley by car too!

Road-Trip Portugal: Douro Valley

When’s the best time to visit Douro Region

If you want to visit the Douro Valley during the harvest time, you’ll have to visit during the two last weeks of September, which is quite a short period of time.

Obviously, the area is still stunning from Spring to Fall, but you should note that it can be very -read extremely- hot during July and August.

So, if you’re planning on visiting the region during these months, make sure to bring loads of water or to have access to A/C in your car.

Driving around Douro Region – The Highlights & Douro Valley Itinerary

You can easily drive from Porto to Douro Valley and be prepared to enjoy the Douro Valley scenic drive!

There’s an amazing lookout around Caldas De Aregos, and this region would actually be quite good accommodation-wise.

Then, I’d suggest you keep going if you have enough time and head towards Peso da Régua where you could visit Douro Museum and get another great view at São Leonardo da Galafura.

If you continue further up, I’d suggest you add Lamego, Quinta das Carvalhas and Pinhao to your list as the views appear to be stunning!

While in Pinhao, you might want to stop at Casal de Loivos, which is apparently pretty epic too.

I also heard positive feedback from a local who suggested the road between Bateiras and Sao Joao da Pesqueira, which is apparently the most scenic route in Portugal.

While you’re there you could either visit Arribes del Duero National Park or directly head to Spain.

Where to stay in the Douro Region

We personally opted for Cinfaes as we didn’t want to go too far, but kindly note that there are many amazing spots along the way.

If your budget isn’t super restricted, you can even end up booking amazing hotels like Six Senses Douro Valley which, by the way, looks pretty unique!

Best Things to do in Douro Valley Portugal

L isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Douro Valley Portugal is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Nestled in Northern Portugal, the valley is known for its beautiful lookout points, charming villages and abundant wineries. About an hour from the city of Porto, the Douro wine region can easily be visited on a day trip or a long weekend trip while visiting Portugal . Viking River Cruises also offers an intimate longship journey through the Douro.

Table wine and port wine are produced here and shipped all over the world. Spend the day exploring vineyards, crushing grapes with your feet or sampling local wines. In addition to wine tasting , visitors can take a river cruise on the Douro River, go hiking and visit a natural park. Plus, be sure to explore the valley’s villages. Read about these activities, and more, with our roundup of the 6 best things to do in Douro Valley Portugal.

1. Visit a winery

A trip to Douro Valley would be incomplete without a visit to a winery. Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego sits in the heart of the Douro Valley. One of the region’s oldest wine estates, Quinta da Pacheca is a winery, hotel and olive producer all-in-one. Wine lovers can take a guided tour of the winery, book a tasting, go grape stomping, participate in an olive harvesting experience and more. The wine hotel features traditional guest rooms or for something a little more adventurous, guests can go glamping in huge wine barrels.

In addition, Quinta Nova is another hotel and winery that goes way back. Here, visitors can go wine tasting, take a wine-making class, enjoy a vineyard tour at sunset and order traditional Portuguese food at the winery restaurant. Plus, there is a museum associated with the winery that preserves its history.

Quinta do Seixo

Visit Quinta do Seixo for beautiful views over the valley. This winery is part of the Sandeman brand, a popular port wine producer. Here, visitors can have a picnic in the vineyard, take a guided tour of the estate or book a tasting. Quinta do Vale Meao is another famous winery. In the city of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, this winery is family-owned and a great place to learn about Douro Valley wine production.

2. Take a boat tour through the Douro River

One of the easiest ways to see the Douro Valley is from a boat trip down the Douro River, which stretches from the Soria Province in Spain to Porto. In fact, wine was traditionally carried down this river in Rabelo boats, long flat boats, recognizable by the long oar protruding from the back. The wine was then stored in Porto wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, many boats make the same journey, this time carrying tourists as part of organized river cruises.

There are short boat trips that depart from Pinhão or longer ones that leave from Porto. Many tours include wine tasting and lunch. The longer tours from Porto typically make stops at some of the smaller villages along the river valley. Click here  to select the right tour for you.

3. Go to a lookout

The Douro Valley is known for its amazing lookout points. São Leonardo da Galafura is one of the most famous lookouts. Here, visitors will be greeted by stunning views of terraced vineyards, rolling hills and the meandering Douro River. There is also a chapel and a picnic area.

São Salvador do Mundo is another breathtaking viewpoint. It’s perched at the top of a hill, and although you can drive up part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, but the views are certainly worth the walk. The Valeira Dam, open countryside, lush greenery, rugged slopes and the beautiful Douro River are all visible from the viewpoint.

The Miradouro de Casal de Loivos is another amazing place to soak up the Douro Valley’s natural beauty. It’s located near the village of Casal de Loivos and can be reached by car. From here, viewers can look over Pinhão, the Douro River and several wineries spanning the hillside.

4. Visit the Douro International Natural Park

Immerse yourself in the valley’s untouched nature while hiking in the Douro International Natural Park. This protected area is close to the Spanish border and features a deep river canyon, majestic cliffs, olive trees and many different animal species, including wolves, wild boar, cave bats and Egyptian vultures.

For panoramic views of the canyon, head to one of the park’s many beautiful viewpoints. Penedo Durão is the best viewpoint for birdwatching and Miradouro de Penha das Torres is a great place to see the sunrise. If you’re not sure where to start your adventure to the Douro International Natural Park, book a guided tour, such as this one with Ambieduc .

5. Visit the Douro Museum

Dive into the valley’s history at the Douro Museu or the Museu do Douro. Located in the small town of Régua, the museum is housed in a historic wine warehouse on the riverfront. Exhibits showcase the history of the wine-making industry in the Douro Valley, and its impact on the local community. In addition, you’ll learn about the geographical features of the valley and why these are so well suited for producing wine.

After exploring the museum, enjoy a glass of wine at the on-site wine bar. Visitors receive one complimentary glass of port or table wine with their ticket. For those based in Porto, the museum can be reached by train from the São Bento Station or through a boat tour from Porto.

6. Visit the small towns

When you’re not wine tasting or soaking up the views, explore the charming towns scattered throughout the valley. The town of Lamego boasts a beautiful historic chapel sitting atop a grand staircase. The chapel, called the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, was constructed between the 18th and 20th centuries. It features a variety of architectural styles, including Baroque, Romantic and Gothic. The outside of the chapel is decorated in stunning blue and white tiles, called azulejos. Lamego is also home to other historical sites and museums, located just down the hill from the chapel.

Travel Train

If you love azulejos, be sure to visit Pinhão train station, built in 1937. Pinhão is also centrally located, close to many of the most popular wineries, making it a convenient place to stop. There is also a historical train that stops in Pinhão. There is wine and often entertainment on the train.

The train departs from Peso da Régua, another popular town in the Douro Valley. Since many boat tours also depart here, there’s plenty to do for tourists. for example, walk along the Régua pier, check out the town’s churches and grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

One Day in Porto Itinerary

Porto in One day itinerary

Porto is Portugal’s second largest city but it still feels small. The historic center is walkable and with easy and affordable public transport, Ubers and an organized walking route, you can see a lot in a short time.

If you only have one day in Porto, we suggest using Uber to get around. We found them to be very reliable and affordable. Also, if you plan on going into a lot of Porto attractions and using public transport you may consider the Porto Card. We didn’t use the Porto Card for one day, but you can check out what is included here.

A lot of our suggestions are easily walkable once you get to the area that we suggest. We have a map at the bottom of this post that you can follow. And we will suggest where and when to take an Uber and when to walk.

Livraria Lello

one day in porto itinerary livraria lello

Harry Potter fans will want to head straight to Livrario Lellow to start your one-day itinerary. Call an Uber from your hotel and make your way to R. das Carmelitas for the first entry into this world’s most beautiful bookstore. It is rumored that Hogwarts’ winding staircases were modeled after Livraria Lello’s beautiful baroque staircases, but JK Rowling denies that. Either way, there is an entire section dedicated to the beloved series, and you will feel as if you have entered a magical bookshop.

one day in porto itinerary harry potter

Many people have the most beautiful bookstore in the world on their list during their Porto itinerary, but many people also miss out due to a lack of planning. Make sure to book your timed entry in advance. The bookstore opens at 9:00 am, and you will want to book a golden ticket that lets you skip the line and gives you a free book of your choice. Even if you booked the golden ticket and can skip the line, show up at 8:00 to be at the front. We tell you exactly what to do here.

one day in porto itinerary dave and deb harry potter bookstore

You need to book well in advance on the LIvrario Lello Website, and we have an entire blog post telling you exactly how to book that golden ticket and how to make sure you are the first one to enter the bookstore right here. Ultimate Guide for Visiting Livraria Lello

Igrega do Carmo

Porto itinerary for one day Igrega do Carmo

Once you’ve finished at Livraria Lello, walk toward the nearby square to see the iconic tiles of Igrega do Carmo. It is one of the most popular walls of tiles in Portugal, and you can get an iconic photograph in the doorway. Yes, we are guilty of taking that exact shot. The square itself is beautiful but busy. Tours stop here to talk about the church, which has a gorgeous fountain standing at its center.

When you visit Porto, you will be in awe. The historic center was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, and for good reason. Its winding streets, historic churches adorned with Azuelos (Portuguese tiles), and beautiful buildings are something you will never forget.

Cafe Majestic

one day in porto itinerary dave and deb cafe majestic

If you didn’t have breakfast at your hotel, which we highly recommend doing because booking a hotel that includes breakfast saves you a ton of money and time, make your way to the Majestic Cafe for Breakfast. Start your walk uphill, and if you don’t want to eat at Cafe Majestic, there are some great breakfast places just up from Igrega do Carmo. We enjoyed a fantastic breakfast, Zenith Brunch and Cocktails, and Restaurant Carlos Alberto, both located on Praça de Carlos Alberto, at a more reasonable price.

one day in porto itinerary majestic cafe

However, you are only going to be in Porto for one day, so we think you’ll want to eat at one of its most popular cafes. Cafe Majestic was once touted as the most beautiful cafe in the world. It, too, has Harry Potter connections, as JK Rowling frequented his cafe during her time in Porto, and it is said that she wrote the first Harry Potter book there.

Majestic Cafe is a historic restaurant located on the pedestrian-only shopping street Rua de Santa Catarina. Once you have overpaid for your Pasteis de Nata and coffee, take a short stroll along the street to browse its unique shops and expensive boutiques. There are chocolate shops, bookstores and of course the regular Gucci and Rolex stores.

Igreja de Santo Ildefonso

one day in porto itinerary Igreja de Santo Ildefonso

Igreja de Santo Ildefonso Church is the most photographed church in Porto, thanks to its location and the 11,000 Azulejos (traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles) covering the açade and sides of the church.

We never went inside because we think churches get enough money and aren’t fans of paying to see inside, but we did enjoy the view from the steps. If you do go inside, you’ll see a 19th-century pipe organ, oil paintings, and, of course, the usual religious statues.

São Bento Train Station

one day in porto itinerary sao bento trian station

There’s a lot of beauty in Porto, and the Sao Bento train station is no exception. If you haven’t seen enough of those blue tiles, or even if you have, you don’t want to miss The São Bento Train Station. It is touted as one of Europe’s most beautiful train stations thanks to its 20,000 azulejos. Each tile tells a story of Portuguese history.

This train station was opened in 1916 on the site of a former Benedictine monastery of Saint Benedict (São Bento). Tours stop at this busy station all day long to marvel at the ceramic tiles that were painted by Jorge Colaço, one of the most renowned azulejos artists of his time. The panels depict various historical scenes from Portugal’s history, including battles, royal events, and traditional life.

Snack and Sprits at Mercado Do Bolhão

one day in porto portugal bolhao market

When visiting Porto, you will definitely want to visit one of its markets. For lunch, you have a few options: you can turn around and walk back the hill a little bit to visit Mercado do Bolhão, which we highly recommend, or start making your way to the waterfront. But let’s talk about the Bolhao Market. This is one of our favorite markets in Europe, and Bolhão Market is one of the most authentic and traditional markets in Porto.

Although the original structure has undergone renovations, the neoclassical facade remains. The covered market is cool and a great escape from the heat. Inside, you can sample fresh seafood, cheese, sausages, and pastries. The shop owners are friendly and passionate about their local specialties.

one day in porto portugal dave and deb bolhao market

Wander through stalls offering a variety of cheeses, meats, and fresh produce, and savor some authentic Portuguese delicacies that pair perfectly with wine! You can order a glass of wine, Gin and Tonic, or a Porto and Tonic that you can take with you to sip on it as you wander through the aisles.

Pastel de Nata

Pastel de nata confeitaria do Bolhao Porto

If you want to try some Pasteis de Nata, go across the street to the Confeteria de Balhao. It is one of the oldest bakeries in Porto, and many say it has the best Pasteis de Nata in the city. The line is huge in the morning, but later in the morning, it slows down a bit.

Porto City Hall

Porto city hall with Porto Sign

If you love getting those photographs of city signs, Porto City Hall is just a short walk from the Bolhaor

Cais da Ribeira

one day in porto portugal cais de ribeira

If you want to make your way to the river instead of going to the market, you can have lunch in the Ribeira district. Several restaurants and outdoor cafes line the waterfront with street performers entertaining guests as they sample Portuguese food. Cais da Ribeira is Porto’s most picturesque district, with colorful buildings lining the Douro River, and you will definitely want to spend some time exploring this neighborhood.

Enjoy winding your walk down through the narrow streets of Porto (it’s all downhill from the Bolhao Market and São Bento Station if you take the main road), or you can take an Uber to get there faster.

one day in porto itinerary waterfront of Porto

Once you get to the waterfront, you will want to enjoy the energy of this lively part of the city. There are outdoor markets, restaurants, boat tours, and beautiful views of colorful buildings lining the Douro River. This is a great place to pull up a chair and enjoy some lunch (if you skipped the castle and market) or to enjoy an Aperol Spritz.

Porto Cathedral

one day in porto itinerary porto cathedral

If you choose to go to the market, you can also have your driver drop you off at the Porto Cathedral for breathtaking views of the Douro River. It is an uphill walk to the cathedral, so you may want to hire a car to save time. It is worth visiting for the views of the city and river. The Porto Cathedral is one of the city’s oldest monuments, and it has been a religious site since the 12th century.

This is one cathedral you may want to visit. Its cloisters are beautiful, and inside, the cathedral is adorned with azulejos (blue and white ceramic tiles) that narrate religious stories.

 Afternoon

Walk across the ponte luis i bridge.

one day in porto porto ponte luis I bridge

It’s time to head to the city of Novo de Gaia across the river. We loved this district, and it is the perfect place to spend the rest of the afternoon. To get to Novo de Gaia from Porto, you can walk across the famous Ponte Luis I Bridge. You can walk on the lower or upper portion of the bridge. Note that you’ll be sharing the road with cars.

If you had lunch down by the water, you could walk across the lower portion to get to Gaia, or if you went to the Porto Cathedral (which we highly recommend because you can eat dinner at the Ribeira), you could walk along the upper portion. We loved the views from the upper portion. The Ponte Luis I Bridge is 45 meters high, and the views of both cities are beautiful from up here. There are no cars driving on the upper bridge, but there are trams going back and forth, so keep an eye out.

River Cruise on the Douro River

one day in porto portugal douro river cruise

Once you get to Gaia, you can embark on a river cruise on the Douro River to see Porto’s stunning riverside scenery. We took the 6 Bridges Cruise, which takes you from one end of the city to the other. The 50-minute cruise will give you a unique perspective of Porto’s iconic bridges and landmarks, from the vibrant streets of Cais da Ribeira to the port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.

You can book river cruises on the Ribeira side as well, but they are quite busy. We booked on Gaia instead. You can book your cruise in advance as well which will guarantee your time slot. It is worth seeing the entire side from a bot.

Port Wine Tasting at Vila Nova De Gaia

one day in porto portugal Vila Nova De Gaia port wine tasting

The waterfront of Gaia is famous for its port wine cellars, and now is the time to visit them and do a port tasting. A trip to Porto isn’t a trip without tasting its famous port wine! You don’t need to take a tour, but it is fun to visit one of the cellars. We have toured and bought wines from Taylor’s, Calem, and Foncesco, and the port wines are divine.

One day in Porto Itinerary tasting Port in the afternoon

Calem is the easiest to visit as it is located directly on the waterfront, and they offer port-tasting flights. If you want to see the WoW District (World of Wine) Fonseco and Taylor’s are located just a short walk up. They are both less busy, but the wines are finer. We loved our port tasting experience Taylor’s is the official supplier of the Royal Family, and it was the first port of wine in space! Try out a tasting session to discover the depth and richness of these world-class wines.

Going into a port wine lodge is a wonderful experience; you feel as if you have stepped back in time and enjoyed a wine tour through these historic cellars.

Portuguese wine is as delicious as it is unique, with varieties such as Vino Verde and Port Wine. The Douro Valley is Portugal’s famous wine region, and you can book a tour of Porto in the Douro Valley if you have a few days.

Stroll the Gaia Waterfront

porto portugal one day itinerary Vila Nova De Gaia

We enjoyed the Gaia waterfront more than the Ribeira because, for one, it has the best views of Porto (including the beautiful Riviera). You can see the colorful terraced houses rising up from the Douro River, with the cathedral and fort standing proudly overhead.

Port houses line the waterfront, showcasing the famous Portuguese wine. Gaia is much less busy than Porto and two of our favorite stores are located on the waterfront of Gaia.

Wonderful World of Portuguese Sardines

porto portugal one day itinerary portuguese sardines

You must stop by to see the wonderful world of Portuguese Sardines. This circus-like store is a destination unto itself. Similar in style to Livraria Lello, this store has baroque staircases and walls full of thousands of colorful cans of sardines. There is a multimedia display showcasing the history of Portuguese Sardines, and it is simply a spectacle. Plus, you can buy a sardine from a year that is special to you. Why not bring home a Portuguese can with your birthdate or anniversary on it?

The Bacalau House

one day porto itinerary bacalau hose

The Balacau House is another must-stop. This is where you can try the country’s famous Cod Cakes while enjoying another beautiful shop. The store is a part shop, museum arcade, and gallery. This shop has two winding staircases, and the Bacalau house even has live entertainment. Pull up a chair on the upper balcony, grab a serving of Bacalau accompanied by port wine, and you’ll have a true Portuguese experience.

Sunset Apperitivo

porto portugal one day itinerary sunset cocktails

From the waterfront, you can hop on the Teleferico (cable car), which will take you back up to the top of Gaia for your sunset views. If you have the budget, we recommend having appetizers and a cocktail at the Esplanada do Teleferico. It’s a fantastic restaurant offering fantastic views of Porto from its outdoor terrace.

Relax with a refreshing drink and take in the breathtaking skyline as the sun sets over the city.

Jardim Do Morro

one day porto itinerary sunset at Jardim Do Morro

If you don’t want to pay €15 to €20 for a cocktail, you can have the same view just behind the restaurant at Jardim Do Morro. Pull up a blanket and enjoy the view as the sun goes down and the lights go on over Porto.

Fado show in Porto in a wine cellar

Since you’ve had Bacalau, appetizers, and port wine, we suggest putting off dinner until later. Besides, why not embrace the Portuguese culture and eat late? So before dinner, book a Fado Show in a wine cellar. Fado is a beautiful live performance of singers accompanied by guitars. We booked this tour through Get Your Guide and loved it. The hour long performance also includes a glass of Port Wine.

Fado is a true cultural experience that is so important to Portugal that it is recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It is known for its expressive and profoundly melancholic character, typically conveying themes of longing, sadness, and nostalgia. The music is intensely emotional, aiming to evoke a feeling of ‘saudade’ a Portuguese term that describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for something or someone that one loves.

Dinner on the Ribeira in Porto

Depending on where your hotel is located (or if you are willing to take a taxi or uber which are very affordable) you will want to choose where to have dinner and evening drinks. The Ribeira, Gaia Waterfront, or Rua de Santa Catarina are all great dining choices.

There are so many delicious and authentic restaurants in Porto that it’s easy to be overwhelmed, but just relax, enjoy, and do what we do… look for restaurants that seem to be full of locals.

Francesinha – A Porto Staple

douro valley tours from porto

One food you will want to try at dinner is francesinha. This sandwich sounds disgusting, but it is delicious. Most restaurants serve it and after all that port wine and cocktails, it will help to soak up the alcohol. So what is it? This is a hearty sandwich made of sausage, cheese, ham, more meat, and bread served with a tomato beer sauce.

Nightlife at Galerias de Paris Street

For nightlife, make your way to Galleria Paris near the Livraria Lello Bookstore for bar hopping. You finish your day where you began. This is where the locals hang out into the wee hours of the morning.

How to Get to Porto

How to get to Porto Portugal

By Air : The primary gateway by air is through Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (also known as Porto Airport), located approximately 11 kilometers from the city center. The airport hosts a variety of international and domestic flights, connecting Porto with major cities across Europe and beyond. From the airport, travelers can reach the city center via the metro (the Violet E line directly connects the airport to the Trindade metro station in the city center), bus, taxi, or ride-sharing services.

By Train : For travelers coming from other parts of Portugal or from Spain, trains are a convenient option. Porto’s main train station, Sao Bento Station, is located in the heart of the city and is well-connected to the Portuguese rail network. Another key station is Campanhã, which is on the east side of the city and serves as the main hub for trains arriving from Lisbon, the Algarve, and international destinations such as Spain. From Campanhã, passengers can take a local train or the metro to reach the central areas of Porto and Sao Bento Station.
