37 things to do in Hampshire with kids

When I look back at most of the days out in Hampshire with kids I’ve tried, they tend to split into three – exploring the New Forest , visiting Winchester or a trip to the lovely Isle of Wight .

Me, standing by one of the New Forest ponies while holding my toddler - one of my top things to do in Hampshire with kids

But while there’s plenty to keep families entertained in each of those, that’s only the start of places to visit in Hampshire for kids. There are castles and historic houses, animal attractions, museums, Peppa Pig and the wonderful Mary Rose to discover just for starters

So if you’re wondering what to do in Hampshire with kids, I’ve got 37 ideas to start you off – or if you’re spending most of your visit on the Isle of Wight, check out my top things to do on the Isle of Wight with kids .

Hampshire castles and historic sites

I vividly remember visiting this Tudor ship when I was a child, not long after it was raised from the seabed in 1982 – centuries after Henry VIII’s flagship sank during the Battle of the Solent off Portsmouth , where she was built.

Since then, the museum has had a multi-million pound revamp to show off some of the 19,000 artefacts which were excavated along with the wreck – including nit combs complete with nits and a skeleton of a small dog – and some of the information archaeologists have learned.

With interactive displays, plus ideas for things for kids to do at home, it’s a fascinating family day out in Hampshire, as well as being great if you’re visiting Hampshire in the rain with kids.

Buy tickets to the Mary Rose Museum with free cancellation , or it’s also included in Ultimate Explorer tickets along with access to other attractions at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

HMS Victory in the historic Naval dockyard of Portsmouth, as seen from the water - my top things to do in Hampshire for kids

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

The Hampshire coast is defined by its naval history, from fortresses protecting against invasion to ships in the harbour (these days including cruise ships) – so you can’t miss a day out at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard .

The HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, is perhaps the best known but it’s only one of the historic ships you can discover, alongside HMS Warrior, the world’s first iron-hulled warship, as well as others from the First and Second World Wars, not least a submarine.

There’s also a museum and other family activities on the site – two sites, in fact, with some across the water in Gosport. A waterbus can take you from the exhibits in Portsmouth harbour, or try a harbour tour.

You can also buy Ultimate Explorer tickets for access to multiple attractions including the Dockyard and Mary Rose, or a ticket for HMS Victory only, both with free cancellation.

Check out my review of a visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard with kids

Portchester Castle

First built in the late 3rd century, Portchester Castle is the best-preserved of the Roman forts on the Saxon Shore, as this stretch of the South East has become known.

There’s an exhibition in the Keep about the castle’s history, from its earliest Roman days to Saxon settlement, Norman castle, medieval royal palace and beyond – as well as a free audio tour to listen to as you explore.

Henry V launched his invasion of France from here, but then for hundreds of years its role was a prisoner of war camp, including for a group brought from the Caribbean in the 18th century and thousands held within the walls during the Napoleonic wars.

If you’re visiting the Isle of Wight, check out Carisbrooke Castle for its Civil War histories and donkeys as well as Queen Victoria’s ‘family home’ at Osborne .

Southsea Castle

Henry VIII watched from Southsea Castle when the Mary Rose sank into the waves, and there are still plenty of links between this historic fort and the famous wreck, including family-friendly events held during the year.

Southsea castle at sunset - one of the historic places to visit in Portsmouth with kids

You can explore the ramparts and the tunnels (guided tours of small groups only, so do book) as well as looking out across the Solent yourself.

And while it might not be a clincher when it comes to planning days out in Hampshire for kids, there’s a bonus for adults in the shape of the microbrewery inside the walls: you can buy bottles to take away as well.

Hurst Castle

Another of Henry VIII’s forts protecting the south coast, Hurst Castle sits at the edge of a spit of land by the entrance to the Solent – back then an essential defence, but these days a chance to see some fantastic views and feel like you’re far from real life.

The castle has been used as a prison for Charles I, has been a hideaway for smugglers, before being strengthened for war with Napoleon (although it saw most action as a military hospital) and modernised again as a Second World War defence.

Getting to the castle is almost as much adventure as looking around – it’s either a two-mile walk along the shingle spit or a ferry runs from Keyhaven .

Tudor House and Garden, Southampton

Despite its name, Southampton’s most important historic building dates back to well before Tudor times and you can trace the history from some of its earliest owners – a perfect snapshot of how life changed over the centuries from early medieval origins through plague and war.

As well as family events and activities, there are plenty of opportunities for kids to get hands on as you explore. The Tudor House and Garden is also a great point to start a walking tour of Southampton’s Old Town .

For ideas of more things to do in Southampton with kids , check out my top picks

View across the lavender and gardens to Mottisfont National Trust - one of my top days out in Hampshire with kids

One of the prettiest National Trust properties we’ve visited – and there’s stiff competition – Mottisfont’s grounds are a gorgeous mix of formal gardens, including the rose garden, wide open lawns for kids to scamper across, and woodland with a stream running through.

They also have great exhibitions for kids (including one on Charlie & Lola author Lauren Child when we visited ) as well as a few highlights for children in the house, from the old nursery to the snappy surprise in the bathroom on the servants’ floor.

Hinton Ampner

With 80 acres of ancient parkland plus formal gardens, there’s plenty of space for families to explore at Hinton Ampner , including trails, walks and lots of spots for a picnic. Pick up the family trail to discover clues on the site about life in Tudor times or look for the sculptures in the woods

The house itself has had a long and dramatic history, including a fire last century, and is apparently still home to ghosts…

Winchester cathedral

The city of Winchester was England’s first capital, and if your kids love history, it’s a fabulous day out in Hampshire. Don’t miss looking around the cathedral : my daughter had her first visit when she was a toddler – there is a children’s trail to help explore, as well as occasional special family trails and activities during holidays.

Keep an eye out for a couple of hedgehogs on gravestones and a diver’s helmet in the retrochoir as well as heading down into the crypt to discover an Anthony Gormley sculpture.

You can also try the Winchester Cathedral and City Treasure Trail which are a great way to explore with kids, while during the winter, the Christmas market and ice rink in the shadow of the cathedral are wonderful.

For more things to do in Winchester with kids , check out my pick of the best

Looking up at Winchester cathedral - why Winchester is one of my top days out in Hampshire for families

Winchester Great Hall

All that remains of Winchester Castle, the Great Hall dates back to the 13th century – and while it’s the Round Table which is the biggest attraction, there’s more to discover here with kids.

You can debate whether Winchester really was Camelot or retell a few of the Arthurian legends, as well as following the children’s trail of villains, heroes and ghosts, including those in the Long Gallery.

There’s also the chance to try on some costumes and take a selfie with your head on the executioner’s block, or wander through Queen Eleanor’s garden, enjoying its peace and 13th century plants.

The Vyne, near Basingstoke

This National Trust property played host to Tudor royalty before becoming a 17th century family home, plus there are gardens, woodlands and wetlands for explore.

But as well as the usual National Trust attractions for families, The Vyne also has a small adventure play area which kids will love.

The Hidden Realm is inspired by fantasy and legend, with a wooden fort and water play, with a little stream running to the sandpit and the chance to build dams. Pack spare clothes…

Titchfield Abbey

You can still explore the ruins of this 13th century abbey turned Tudor manor, although don’t expect the building to be intact. Wandering through what’s left of Titchfield Abbey is distinctly atmospheric though, and many walls are still standing – you can even stand up inside one of the huge fireplaces.

For a bit more history, there are boards with information, as well as being able to see where the missing walls would have stood.

Perfect for kids to run around or for a family picnic with a difference, there’s no charge to enter so it’s ideal if you’re looking for free days out in Hampshire with kids.

View of the grand Chawton House in the village of Chawton - a great family day out in Hampshire

Chawton House

Owned by Jane Austen’s brother, the author spent hours at Chawton House , just a short walk from the cottage where she lived – but while it’s a great day out in Hampshire with teens, it’s not just for fans of her novels.

There are activity trails and the chance to play in the gardens as well as exploring the estate – plus you can spot graffiti done by the Austen family on the paintings indoors.

The 400-year-old house has plenty of history to discover as well, including witch marks and a herb garden with plants used in 18th century medicine.

Butser Ancient Farm

It’s tricky to know quite how to categorise Butser Ancient Farm apart from being a fantastic day out in Hampshire with kids – part outdoor museum, part historic site, part animal attraction, it’s a unique blend of all three.

Set in the South Downs National Park near Petersfield, this experimental archaeology site features reconstructions of ancient buildings from the Stone Age and Iron Age through Roman Britain and into the Anglo Saxon era. There are also prehistoric crops, as well as rare animal breeds such as goats and sheep which the original inhabitants on these homes would have recognised.

Kids can also try the family trails and quizzes, as well as some activities with a difference, including mosaic making and wattling fences, plus some special events during holidays.

If your kids love history – and mosaic making – Brading Roman Villa on the Isle of Wight is a great place to explore too

Animal attractions

Marwell zoo.

With 1,200 animals set across 140 acres, there’s a huge amount to discover at this wonderful Hampshire zoo – and that’s quite apart from the extra family attractions you find from time to time at Marwell Zoo (including Brickosaurs, or lego dinosaurs, when we visited ).

There’s a stamp trail to follow, although the animals themselves are enough of an attraction, from amur tigers to zebras, not to mention cheetah, red pandas, penguins. You can also hop onto little trains, as well as finding adventure playgrounds.

For more animal attractions on the Isle of Wight, check out the Isle of Wight Zoo , Amazon World Zoo Park and the Monkey Haven .

Red panda sitting in a tree at Marwell Zoo - one of the top things to do in Hampshire with kids

New Forest Wildlife Park

If you’d like to see some of Hampshire’s local animals, you’ll love the New Forest Wildlife Park which specialises in British wildlife – some, like the grey wolves, are past inhabitants while there are also deer, badgers, hedgehogs and more, including Scottish wildcats, still to be found on these shores today.

There are also four species of otter and seven species of owl. Make a note of some of the talks and feeding times, as well as some extra events and activities during holidays – plus adventure playgrounds here too.

For more things to do in the New Forest with kids , check out my top picks, as well as my review of the New Forest Wildlife Park

Hawk Conservancy

This award-winning Hampshire attraction is perfect for a family day out – as well as a focus on conservation (as you might guess from the name) and rehabilitation, you can also see flying displays and kids can get close to the beautiful birds of prey.

There’s also the chance to watch feeding times, with around 150 birds in the 22-acre site, head into the wildflower meadow or take a tractor ride, plus a stamp trail around the grounds of the Hawk Conservancy .

For smaller kids, it’s not just larger birds: keep an eye out for the burrowing owls as well, or try pond dipping.

Longdown Activity Farm, New Forest

This family-friendly farm is great if you’re visiting Hampshire with toddlers and younger kids – you can bottle-feed the kids (the baby goats, that is) as well as seeing other small farm animals, from ponies and pigs down to rabbits and guinea pigs.

Children can get properly hands on holding some of the smaller inhabitants of Longdown Farm in the animal encounters, play indoors and out – which is good for a rainy day in Hampshire – and take tractor trailer rides.

Check out my review of Longdown Farm with a toddler.

My husband carries our toddler daughter on his shoulder around Longdown Farm in the New Forest - my review of our day out at Longdown Farm New Forest - one of the best days out in Hampshire with toddlers

Manor Farm Country Park

Step back into the past at Manor Farm Country Park , with its traditional farm machinery, Victorian kitchen and schoolroom – for those who saw BBC2’s Wartime Farm, showing how farms were run during the Second World War, this estate in Eastleigh will be very familiar.

You can still help by milking the cows or meeting the animals, where kids can hold chicks and rabbits, or catch up on some lessons in the 19th century schoolroom.

Once you’ve finished your work, watch the farmer’s wife go about her tasks, or hit the play areas – an outdoor one with a play tractor and combine harvester, and a new indoor play barn with different zones for toddlers up to eight-year-olds, ideal on a rainy day in Hampshire with kids.

Blue Reef Aquarium Southsea

We’ve visited a few of the Blue Reef Aquariums around the country – including Hastings just along the coast and Newquay in Cornwall – and they’re a lovely option if you’re visiting Hampshire in the rain with kids, as well as if you have small Octonauts fans.

With rays, sharks, jellyfish and turtles, as well as the otters, there’s plenty to discover beyond the fish as well at Blue Reef Aquarium Southsea , near Portsmouth.

Time your visit for one of the talks or feeding times, find Nemo among the clownfish or peer at the piranhas, as well as finding out more about the marine life in rockpools… ideal if you’re also planning to hit the beach in Hampshire.

Hampshire theme parks

Paultons park and peppa pig world.

If you’re a parent, chances are you’ll already know of Hampshire’s top theme park – as Paultons Park is the home of Peppa Pig World. But as well as the gentle rides and chance to meet Peppa and George if you’re visiting Hampshire with a toddler, there’s plenty more heart-racing fun.

Check out my tips for visiting Peppa Pig World and Paultons Park.

A Grandpa Pig statue at Peppa Pig World in Paulton's Park - the best Hampshire theme park and a great family day out

There are more than 70 rides, acres of grounds and animals to meet, as well as several themed areas: Lost Kingdom is all about dinosaurs, while Critter Creek is great for younger ones, so there’s something for older and taller kids who want some adrenaline thrills as well as less scary options.

Add in playgrounds, a discovery trail and other events and shows, and it’s very easy to fill your day out – no surprise this is one of the top family attractions in Hampshire.

If you’re visiting the Isle of Wight, head to Blackgang Chine which has its own rides and plenty of options to play, plus one of the world’s biggest collections of animatronic dinosaurs

Museums in Hampshire with kids

Beaulieu motor museum.

Although your ticket includes several attractions, including Beaulieu Abbey and Palace House with its costumed guides, it’s the motor attractions which tempt most visitors at Beaulieu : the National Motor Museum and the World of Top Gear as a bonus.

From some of the earliest motor vehicles through to F1 cars and land speed record breakers, the museum truly is a journey through car history.

There are some chances to get hands on, as well as being able to meet the Beaulieu crash test dummy, explore a 1930s garage before heading over to see some of the weird and wonderful creations from the complete Top Gear series, including the challenge cars.

Winchester City museum

This small family-friendly museum tells the story of the city, from its origins through its Roman incarnation of Venta Belgarum, to the home of Alfred the Great and England’s ancient capital up to Regency times and Jane Austen’s links with the city.

There’s plenty to bring it alive for kids as well: spot a medieval mayor’s wooden toilet seat, try your hand as an amateur archaeologist, try on Roman and Saxon costumes, or follow the museum spotter trail.

There’s no charge to enter, although donations are welcome, so it’s great if you’re looking for free days out in Hampshire for kids.

For more of Winchester’s long history, you’re less than a 10-minute walk from Winchester City Mill , which dates back to the reign of King Alfred

The statue of King Alfred in Winchester - discovering Winchester's history at some of the best Hampshire museums for kids

Westgate Museum

For more Winchester history, the Westgate Museum in the last of the city’s main medieval gates tells the story of Tudor and Stuart Winchester, as well as of the building, once a debtors’ prison.

You can try on a replica coat of armour and Tudor costumes or have a go at brass rubbing, while there’s also a spotter trail and family activities.

Winchester Science Centre

This science museum is home to the largest standalone planetarium in the UK but that’s really only the beginning of what you’ll find at the Winchester Science Centre, with so many interactive displays and exhibits that you’ll struggle to fit it all in to one day.

The Explorer: Space zone takes you on a voyage through the solar system, then you can bend light, stroke a meteorite and more with the hands-on section. Throw in live science shows, an area to get inventing and the 3D delights of the planetarium, and it’s fantastic for kids who love experimenting – as well as their parents, this is genuinely great fun for the whole family.

Perfect for rainy days in Hampshire with kids, but you don’t need bad weather to visit – there’s also an outdoor area, with a trail and water play.

Read my review of a day at Winchester Science Centre with kids

Milestones Museum

Step back into the past at Hampshire’s Museum of living history, where you can do everything from buying retro sweets in the traditional sweetshop to checking out the vintage vehicles.

The Victorian and 1930s streets at Milestones Museum are based on original buildings from in and around Basingstoke, with shops and factories as well as houses.

Pop inside the miller, the saddler and the ironmonger and chat to some of the inhabitants in period costume to hear more tales of what life would have been like. Your ticket also gets you free return entry for the rest of the year.

Other days out in Hampshire with kids

Spinnaker tower.

At 170m high, the Spinnaker Tower  in Portsmouth is taller than Blackpool Tower or the London Eye – and on a clear day, you can see for 23 miles. Head up to gaze out from one of three viewing decks, with information on just what you’re looking at, and a great panorama including the ships sailing in and out of port.

The highest, the Sky Garden, has a mesh ceiling so you can feel the breeze. Or look down to the harbour through the glass floor of the Sky Walk – only 6cm deep, it can hold the equivalent of two black rhinos. For the most extreme adrenaline thrills, teens aged 14 and over can abseil down the side (accompanied by an adult!).

If that doesn’t appeal, there’s also also a virtual reality experience and The Sail of the Solent animated film. If the weather takes a turn for the worse and the tower is lost in the mist? If you can’t see all three Solent forts on the day of your visit, you can get a free ticket to return another day (within three months).

Check out my review of the Spinnaker Tower with kids

View of Portsmouth and the Spinnaker Tower from the ferry to the Isle of Wight - one of the top things to do in Hampshire with kids

Take the Hythe Ferry

The historic Hythe Ferry links Southampton with the village of Hythe – and while it only takes 20 minutes to cross, it’s a lovely way to take in the views of the ferries, cruise ships and other boats at the port, as well as giving great views of local landmarks including the Spinnaker Tower.

A ferry has been running across this stretch of the water since 1880, and while it looked like the service was going to stop, it’s now been bought by Red Funnel so will be shuttling passengers across the water again.

If you’re visiting Hampshire with young kids, it’s also a lot easier than testing their attention span on a long boat trip. And when you arrive at Hythe Pier, the world’s oldest pier train – a small gauge electric pier train dating back to the First World War – takes you 640 metres along one of the 10 longest piers in the British Isles.

If you fancy a longer trip at sea, you can’t beat cruising out to The Needles off the Isles of Wight. There are short voyages around Alum Bay or you can sail from Yarmouth which connects to Lymington on the mainland in the New Forest.

Go Ape at Itchen Valley Country Park

Explore 440 acres of fields, water meadows and woodland at Itchen Valley Country Park – either from ground level for younger kids, or head right up into the tree to check out the Go Ape course. The Treetop adventure is suitable for all ages, while the Treetop challenge is for ages 10+ (and a minimum of 1.4m tall)

If you don’t fancy the high ropes, there are also off-road bike tracks, trails to follow and several play areas, including an indoor play zone, The Holt, for kids aged six and under, plus two outdoor playgrounds for different ages.

There’s also the Play Trail including a giant squirrel, climbing frame and snail slide – this and the Forest Trail are both pushchair friendly if you’re visiting Hampshire with a baby.

If you’re looking for more places to get outdoors in Hampshire with kids, Royal Victoria Country Park between Southampton and Portsmouth, has a fantastic Fairy Garden while Sir Harold Hillier Gardens , between Southampton and Winchester has some great play areas

Ride the Watercress Line railway

The Mid Hants railway is better known as the Watercress Line – and quite apart from having one of the most fun names around, it’s a lovely day out in Hampshire for kids (and their grandparents!)

As well as occasional Thomas the Tank Engine themed days, steam trains chuff between several small stations – and your ticket lets you hop on and off all day – including stops between Alton and Alresford, plus a trail leaflet with six things to spot along the way and other activities.

A mini railway also runs on Saturdays from April to October.

Harry Potter fans can also walk in the young wizard’s footsteps over the Harry Potter bridge: the real bridge which doubled as Kings Cross where Harry receives his Hogwarts Express ticket in the movie.

View of the flowers and trees around a pond at Exbury Gardens - a ride on the small steam train through the gardens is one of the best things to do in Hampshire with kids

Exbury Gardens and steam railway

The Watercress Line isn’t the only chance to hop on board a steam train while you’re visiting Hampshire with kids.

The little steam railway at Exbury Gardens follows at 1.5 mile route through the gardens themselves – known as the Rhododendron Line!

The grounds stretch for 200 acres in total, famous for their rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias, as well as the woodland scenery, and you can hop off the train part-way around if you want to explore the northernmost part of the gardens or simply enjoy the journey back to the start.

If you’ve got a small train fan, there’s also a steam railway on the Isle of Wight with a chance to ride the trains as well as look at the locomotives.

Spot ponies in the New Forest

One of the loveliest spots in England, the New Forest is packed with pretty villages, lovely walks and most excitingly for small kids, ponies which roam freely – not to mention a few donkeys.

If you’re exploring the New Forest, the chances are you’ll see some along the way but a good place to spot them is near Brockenhurst, around Beachern Wood.

Finding them is a good excuse to set out on a walk or a cycle ride . From Brockenhurst, there’s an off-road trail to Bank, or we cycled from nearby Beaulieu to Bucklers Hard on the waterfront .

For more things to do in the New Forest with kids , check out my top picks

View of the Beaulieu river and Bucklers Hard in the New Forest - one of my top places to visit in Hampshire with kids

Canoeing in the New Forest

There’s more than one way to see the New Forest – and as well as walking and cycling, you can take a canoe or kayak out on the Beaulieu river .

It’s a tidal river, so it’s worth getting advice from the experts on the best time to go out – we tried New Forest Activities – and if you’re lucky, you can spot seals.

Kids aged 12 and over can take out a single kayak (accompanied by an adult) or there are double kayaks, as well as family canoes and guided canoe trips.

Take the New Forest Tour

If you’re visiting Hampshire with young kids, or simply fancy an alternative to walking (and don’t want to drive), the open-top New Forest Tour bus is a great way to discover the National Park.

There are three different routes and if you are exploring without a car, details on bus connections to Southampton, as well as Bournemouth and Salisbury if you’re staying across the border in Dorset or Wiltshire.

The hop-on hop-off routes mean you can explore along the way, and each shows a different side of the forest, from the wilder north-west to the coast in the south and a third linking pretty Brockenhurst and Beaulieu. There are multiple day tickets if you want to use the buses over your whole stay to explore throughout the New Forest with kids.

Two model dinosaurs watch my daughter hunting for fossils on our guided walk on Yaverland Beach - finding Isle of Wight dinosaurs is perfect if you're visiting Hampshire with kids

Discover dinosaurs

The Isle of Wight is known as dinosaur isle, so if your kids are fascinated by all things dinosaur, it’s worth taking the ferry across the Solent to discover the Dinosaur Isle museum and the fossil hunting walks they run.

For older kids, you can’t beat heading out onto the beach to hunt for remains of the dinosaurs which would have menaced the area millennia ago – we discovered a fossil or part of a carnivorous dinosaur arm , helped by our guide, along with a fun lesson on some of the geology of the island.

On an earlier visit, I visited Dinosaur Isle with a toddler , and discovered it’s a great place to explore with younger kids including plenty of chance to get hands on among the models.

Hit the beach

If you’re looking for beaches in Hampshire with kids, they may not be as well-known as some of the other stretches of England’s south coast, but there are still plenty of options for a few sandcastles and paddling.

The mainland coast has long stretches of shingle – lovely Southsea beach has sand at low tide and joins up to Eastney beach as you get closer to Portsmouth. Or Hayling Island has sheltered stretches for swimming as well as great windsurfing for older kids at West Hayling.

For some of the best sandy beaches in Hampshire, you need to head to the Isle of Wight. Appley beach near Ryde is one of our favourites, with a playpark as well the sand, plus it’s close to the Fishbourne ferry dock from Portsmouth if you’re just heading over for the day.

Or at Priory Bay, there’s some great crabbing and rockpooling on the Isle of Wight alongside a sandy beach, while further around the coast, Freshwater Bay is a great suntrap on a warm day.

That’s only the start of the Isle of Wight beaches though: the beaches around Sandown Bay, by Sandown and Shanklin, have won awards, and there are little coves galore.

Check out my top Isle of Wight beaches with kids in this post

My daughter on the beach at Freshwater Bay - if you're looking for Hampshire beaches, a visit to the Isle of Wight with kids is unmissable

Go for a walk

The New Forest and Itchen Valley Country Park (above) are just a couple of the places with some great walks for families in Hampshire .

River Hamble Country Park is home to ancient woodland and roe deer, with activities to download including I Spy and Leaf spotting. Among the walking routes, there are some which are suitable for pushchairs (and wheelchairs) not to mention play areas for kids.

Manor Farm (see animal attractions) is also nearby so you can visit both in one day

For a longer trek, the South Downs Way National Trail starts at Winchester, while you can also follow part of the Pilgrim’s Way which heads to Canterbury. Or follow the Solent Way along the coast.

Top 30 things to do in Hampshire with kids

Contents: click to jump to a section

Before I start, here’s a little background to the county of Hampshire.  Located in the south east of England , Hampshire offers its visitors the perfect mix of city, coast, and countryside.  And basically, this means that there are just so many things to do with kids!

Hampshire is home to historic cities such as Winchester, with its magnificent cathedral and Portsmouth, where you can see some of the world’s most famous ships.   For families, there are loads of historic attractions and places to learn about history.

Away from the towns, Hampshire is home to two National Parks, the New Forest and South Downs.  This provides endless opportunities for hiking, wildlife, and outdoor activities.  Whether you want to explore the woods or visit a wildlife park, you’ll find plenty of sporting and outdoor activities in Hampshire.  It’s also near to the coast, so families can enjoy the beach, watersports, and coastal walks.

As you can see, there are heaps of family attractions and things to do in Hampshire with kids.  Read on for our pick of the best.

Historic attractions in Hampshire for kids

Portsmouth historic dockyard.

HMS Victory, Portsmouth, Hampshire

With such a rich naval history in Portsmouth, it’s no surprise that one of the best family days out in Hampshire is to  Portsmouth Historic Dockyard .  This is the part of the HM naval base that is open to the public.  It is the ultimate destination for anyone wanting to learn more about British naval history.

The star attraction of the dockyard is its historic ships.  Children will love climbing aboard HMS Warrior or Napoleon’s famous warship, HMS Victory.

Of course, one of the top things to see at Portsmouth Dockyard is the Mary Rose Museum.  It’s a unique experience which will help you understand the story of the famous Tudor ship, Mary Rose.

If you buy the ultimate explorer pass, you will have unlimited access to all the attractions, including a tour of the harbours.  This ticket is valid for 12 months.

Little Woodham Living History Village

One of the most unique attractions in Hampshire is Little Woodham in Gosport on the South Coast.

Hidden away in a woodland setting, Little Woodham is a replica 17th century village.  Here, families can discover what rural village life used to be like in Hampshire.

Children can immerse themselves in the lives of real villagers (played by volunteers) from centuries ago, to find out how people used to live.  It’s an informative visit, where kids can find out about the type of houses people had and the jobs they used to do.

Silchester Roman City Walls & Ampitheatre

Just 5 miles north of Basingstoke is an original Iron Age settlement, Silchester, which later became an important Roman town.

Today, Silchester is still one of the best preserved Roman towns in Britain.  A day trip to Silchester makes a good educational day out with children in Hampshire.  As well as the ruins of the city walls, you can still see the remains of the Roman ampitheatre.

Silchester is an ideal family attraction for any kids who are learning about the Romans. Even better, entrance is free, so it’s one of the many free things to do in Hampshire.

Southsea Castle

Another important historic building in Hampshire is Southsea Castle, which guards the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour.

Southsea Castle was one of a series of forts built by King Henry VIII to defend the coast of England. Unfortunately, shortly after completion in 1544, King Henry’s flagship, Mary Rose, sunk before his eyes in front of the castle.

Today, children can discover more about King Henry and the castle’s history at the exhibition in the keep.  Whilst you are there, take a wander round the ramparts for a chance to see the lighthouse and canons.  You can also get spectacular views of the Solent.

Indoor fun in Hampshire

I fly indoor skydiving.

If you are looking for indoor activities for families in Hampshire, then the I-Fly Centre in Basingstoke is the perfect venue.

Indoor skydiving simulates the experience of free-falling, without having to jump out of a plane.  Flyers enter a giant wind tunnel, which generates wind and forces it upwards at approximately 120 mph.  This lets you experience the sensation of flight, without the danger or cost.

The actual experience in the wind tunnel only lasts about 2 minutes, but the kids loved it.  Anyone from the age of 3 can fly!

iFLY Indoor Skydiving, thumbs up, big smiles, Hampshire

If you don’t fancy skydiving, try the indoor ski centre, where you can practise on a giant rotating carpet.  A very odd sensation, if you are used to snow.

More adventurous kids can also try the virtual reality “ Altitude ” experience or even have a go at abseiling down the side.

Click here for tickets to Spinnaker Tower .

Mid-Hants Railway "Watercress Line"

Another fun day out for toddlers in Hampshire is a ride on a steam train at the Mid-Hants railway .  It’s even better if you can go on one of their event days,  so that the kids can meet  with Thomas the Tank Engine or even Santa.

Theme Parks in Hampshire

Paultons park.

One of the most fun days out in Hampshire for families is  Paultons Park . This popular theme park is set in 140 acres of parkland in Romsey, on the edge of the New Forest.

Paultons Park is fantastic day out for toddlers, as it is home to Peppa Pig World. Who wouldn’t love a balloon ride with the loveable TV pig or a dinosaur adventure with her little brother, George?

However, it also has plenty to offer older kids.  From animated dinosaurs to high-speed rollercoasters, there is something to suit all tastes.  It even has its own Little Africa animal area, with meerkats and porcupines.

New Forest Water Park

Probably the best water attraction in Hampshire, is the New Forest Water Park . This giant aqua park has one of the UK’s biggest inflatable, obstacle courses on the water.  It even includes its own trampolines, flip boards and climbing wall.

Are you looking for the best places to visit in Hampshire? From exploring the New Forest to seeing Southsea, this is where to go in Hampshire!

places to visit in hampshire

When it comes to beautiful places to visit in Hampshire, you’re completely spoilt for choice.

It’s one of those counties that has everything going for it. It has cool cites, a cracking coastline and gorgeous countryside all just waiting to be explored.

It’s also very close to London making it perfect for either a day trip or a weekend away – I mean, what more could you want from a UK staycation !

In this blog post I’m going to highlight some of the most beautiful places in Hampshire. These are the places I’d really recommend visiting while travelling around the county.

places to go in hampshire

I’ve been to Hampshire a few times now, and every time I keep discovering something new and exciting.

This time around my trip was all about visiting some of the most beautiful places to visit in Hampshire. With places like Whitchurch, Keyhaven and Brockenhurst, I definitely ticked off a few of those.

We also visited the Bombay Sapphire distillery too. If you haven’t seen the architecture of this place yet, just wait till you see it. The glasshouses are just absolutely stunning and this was a real highlight of my trip.

So, if you’re planning a UK staycation, this is what to do in Hampshire. Hopefully this blog post will help you plan your trip here!

Where is Hampshire?

visit hampshire

Hampshire is located slap bang in the middle of the south coast of England . It essentially marks the border between the south east and the south west.

Hampshire is one of only a few counties to have two National Parks within its borders – The New Forest and the South Downs National Park. A couple of things that Hampshire is famous for: it’s home to Highclere Castle where they filmed Downton Abbey (the castle itself is amazing though and well worth visiting). It’s also where Jane Austin was born, and you can even take a tour of her house where she wrote Pride & Prejudice .

new forest hampshire

Coming from London, it only took me an hour and 45 minutes to drive to Portsmouth.

There are regular trains too. The train from London Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour only takes 1h:40m. There are also trains directly to Brockenhurst, Southampton and Winchester all under two hours. Basically, it’s very easy getting to Hampshire!

Best Places to Visit in Hampshire

places to visit in hampshire

Situated on the River Test and surrounded by rolling green hills, Whitchurch is a tiny town that packs a big punch.

It is the first place in North Hampshire where Walkers are Welcome (an initiative to encourage walkers to visit the local area), and that’s definitely what you should do here.

We went on the Mill Trail, a lovely 5-mile loop that takes in the old paper and silk mills in the area. Starting at the Silk Mill in Whitchurch, we walked to Bere Mill, up to Laverstoke Mill, and then round back to Whitchurch again.

There are a few shorter walks along the Mill Trail, but it really highlights everything that’s great about Hampshire.

Our walk took around 2-3 hours – all you need to do is follow the blue arrows! Here’s a map to the different walks you can do.

Visit: Bombay Sapphire Distillery

bomaby sapphire gin tour

Okay, if the Bombay Sapphire distillery isn’t on your Hampshire bucket list, you need to add it now.

I’ve wanted to visit the Bombay Sapphire distillery ever since I saw a picture of their glasshouses on Instagram years ago. This is the iconic image that draws you in, but it’s the gin that makes you wanting to keep coming back for more.

Obviously, this place is all about the gin, so the best thing to do is go on a gin tour. The tour costs £17.50pp – this is for a guided tour where you’ll discover the 10 exotic botanicals that’s infused into Bombay Sapphire gin.

This price also includes a drink in the Mill Bar afterwards where you can choose from 11 different cocktails. I’m not going to say this is the best part of the tour, but it is a great way of finishing it.

making a negroni

If you’re looking for a Bombay Sapphire tour with something a bit more special, then the Gin Cocktail Masterclass is for you.

This is an interactive session on cocktail culture where you can learn the tricks of the bar trade so you can create your own cocktails easily at home.

This experience includes the fully-guided tour detailed as above, but once you’ve finished your complimentary drink, you go off for a one-hour interactive cocktail mixology session. This would make such a good present for that gin fanatic in your life.

Eat: The Palm Brasserie

restaurants in hampshire

If you’ve worked up a bit of an appetite after the Bombay Sapphire distillery tour, then make your way over to The Palm Brasserie . This is a short 10-minute drive just on the outskirts of the village of Deane.

The Palm Brasserie is a converted pub that’s recently been refurbished in 2020. The interiors are really bright and open – it definitely doesn’t feel like it was once a pub.

the palm brasserie

As for the food, it serves up modern Asian fusion and it’s really top-quality cooking.

To start with, I had the seabass roulade on a bed of pickled seaweed, wasabi mayo and salmon roe. For mains, I had the Ras el Hanout rump of lamb with pomme parmentier, savoy carrots, pickled carrots and an Armagnac sauce.

Honestly, the food was so delicious. I really can’t recommend this place enough!

Stay: Watership Down Inn

watership down inn

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay near the Bombay Sapphire distillery, then the Watership Down Inn is the perfect place.

Located in Whitchurch, this is a really charming pub with rooms onsite. There are three rooms upstairs in the original inn, and four brand new bedrooms outside, including a very large family room.

The garden rooms are completely self-contained and quietly nestled on the ground floor within the gardens, carefully designed to complement the beautiful surroundings while bringing a new design. Also, being just on the edge of Whitchurch, there are loads of fantastic walks in the area.

food in hampshire

The onsite restaurant is really popular too, so this is another amazing option for somewhere to eat at. Just taking a look at their Instagram feed is enough to make the tummy rumble.

For me, my perfect day here would involve a really long walk in the afternoon followed by an amazing dinner in the pub afterwards, all washed down with a couple of pints of the local ale of course.

Oh, and if you didn’t get it from the mural, all the pub is themed on the Watership Down novel – so cute!

The New Forest

horses new forest

For me, the New Forest is up there with the most beautiful places to visit in Hampshire. I just absolutely love it here.

Firstly, don’t let the name fool you. The New Forest is anything but new – it was first named as a royal hunting preserve in 1079. Since then, not a whole lot has changed apart from charming villages popping up all over the place.

One of the reasons the New Forest is so famous in England is the fact the deers, donkeys, horses and ponies are free to roam the land. Every time you visit, there’ll be a traffic jam with horses lazily crossing the road – it’s just how they roll here.

cycling new forest

One of the best ways of exploring the New Forest is by bike.

I hired an off-road bike from Cyclexperience and hit some of the trails for the morning. They have plenty of maps and trails to choose from at Cyclexperience – some are short family trails, and others are 30-mile loops that’ll take you most of the day.

I went on a 15-mile route through the heart of the New Forest and it was so peaceful. The riding is fairly flat, and the route takes you past sleepy villages, through the Big Trees, and out into the scrubland. It probably took me around 3 hours to do the loop, but that was stopping lots of times along the way to take photos of the horses and ponies.

Hiring a bike from Cyclexperience can cost as little as £23 per day, which I think is really good value for money. They are a hive of information too, and they’ll help plan your route in the New Forest.

Eat: Rosie Lea House

rosie lea house

If you’re looking for somewhere to eat in the New Forest, I’d recommend Rosie Lea House . This is on Southampton Rd on the outskirts of Lymington, and it’s a really charming place to visit.

The restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored building which is really bright and open. Outside, there is a brand-new decked area and patio that feels like you’re in a friend’s garden.

Rosie Lea House is famous for its homemade scones and cakes. It also has an American inspired bbq menu with dishes like slow cooked beef brisket and pulled pork.

Their ciabatta sandwiches are mega, so I had the 12-hour smoked beef brisket with pickles, and it was melt-in-the-mouth delicious.

It’s definitely worth stopping by this place for lunch or dinner while in the New Forest.

days out in hampshire

Down on the south coast of Hampshire is Keyhaven, a tiny hamlet that boasts some incredible views of the Isle of Wight.

Keyhaven is also home to Hurst Castle, a defensive fortification built by King Henry VIII. You can walk to Hurst Castle via the Hurst Spit, or you can catch the ferry over to the castle.

paddleboarding keyhaven

We opted for a different option though and hired paddleboards from the New Forest Paddle Sport Company .

You can either go on a guided tour with these guys, or hire paddleboards and go out on your own. We decided to go on a tour with Jan so we could learn more about the area and plot the best route to Hurst Castle.

Because the spit separates the harbour from the Solent, the waters are usually very calm. This makes them perfect for sailing and paddleboarding.

Our tour took us around two hours, and it was brilliant paddling in the shadows of Hurst Castle.

For me, this is definitely one of the best things to do in Hampshire.

where to go in hampshire

One of the most popular places to visit in Hampshire is Portsmouth. With a population of 240,000 people, this is actually the biggest city in Hampshire.

What I love about Portsmouth is you’re never short of things to do. You could easily spend a couple of days exploring all the city has to offer and still not do everything.

One of the top things to do here though is visit the Mary Rose Museum. The Mary Rose was first launched in 1511 as one of the key ships in King Henry VIII’s navy.

The wreck of the Mary Rose was discovered in 1971 and was raised in October 1982. This was one of the most complex and expensive maritime salvage projects in history, so it’s a pretty big deal.

The museum really brings the Mary Rose to life, and it’s fascinating learning about one of the UK’s most famous ships.

high tea spinnaker tower

The other top thing to do in Portsmouth is visit the Spinnaker Tower . At 170 metres, this is one of the tallest observation towers in the country.

Tickets to the observation deck cost £13pp, and you have the most gorgeous views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight. I’ve been up the Spinnaker Tower a couple of times and it’s really worth it – the views are always stunning.

You can also have High Tea at the top of the Spinnaker Tower for £35pp which is really popular.

what to do in hampshire

Once you’ve finished at the Spinnaker Tower, I really recommend the walk to Southsea. This is a 45-minute stroll along the Hampshire coast, and there are plenty of places to stop off along the way.

The walk takes you past the Hotwalls Studios. This is an area packed with independent artists selling their work.

A little on from the Hotwalls is Clarence Pier. I’m going to mention the Treasure Island Adventure Golf here because it’s awesome. I’ve played here a couple of times, and it’s fun for the whole family.

If you keep wandering along, the walk will take you past Southsea Castle and the D-Day Story Museum. Both of these show you the naval history of the area and are worth visiting if you’ve got time.

southsea beach cafe

If not, keep on walking towards South Parade Pier in Southsea. Now this is your old school pier from the 1950s. You know the ones with cheap rides on the end and where you can play the penny slots inside. I just love the nostalgia of piers like this – they’re still a lot of fun too.

A little further along from the pier is the Southsea Beach Café . This is one of the best restaurants in Portsmouth and I can’t recommend it enough. I’ve been here a couple of times now and the food is always incredible. If you don’t know what to get, the scallop and chorizo bap is next level.

To be honest with you, I could easily write a guide just on this short walk from Portsmouth to Southsea there are so many things to do!

Southsea is always ranked as one of the best places in Hampshire – it’s very different to Portsmouth so it’s well worth checking out separately.

Stay: The Farley Hangar

places to stay in hampshire

The Farley Hangar is such a peaceful place to stay at in Hampshire. Located on a family farm and private airstrip in the Test Valley, the hangar is right in the heart of the countryside. The closest towns are Romsey, Stockbridge and Winchester, all just 20 minutes away.

The building is a converted Nissen hut that comes with everything you need for a little staycation. Inside you’ll find a king-size bed, a bath with rain shower, a little kitchenette where you can cook, and a fridge too.

the farley hangar

What I loved about this place was dinner though. They’ve teamed up with the guys at McCrimmon and Reid to bring you fine dining in the comfort of home.

We ordered a gourmet food box that was delivered directly to Farley Hangar. All we had to do was heat it up in the oven, and that was it.

black chalk wine

We had king prawn kebabs to start, followed by an herb crusted cod in a mussel and saffron chowder. It was such a special dinner, especially eating outside with the views of the countryside all around.

South Downs National Park

south downs things to do

The South Downs National Park is one of the best places in the world to go stargazing. It is officially an international dark sky reserve. There are only 16 around the world, so it’s amazing that we’ve got one on our doorstep.

Every year in February there’s the South Downs Dark Skies Festival . This has a load of free events all over the South Downs where you can learn about the stars and the night skies. If you’ve never been stargazing before, this is a great place to start.

south downs national park

When I was last in the South Downs National Park, I had a session with Dan Oakley (unofficially known in these parts as Dark Skies Dan) who taught us so much about the night skies.

For example, Sirius, the dogstar, is the brightest star in the sky. I always thought this was the north star but I was completely wrong! It was great learning all about the constellations, and Dan was so enthusiastic. He really made you want to learn more about our night skies.

Obviously if you’re not around for the South Downs Dark Skies Festival then you can go stargazing on your own. I’d really recommend visiting the Old Winchester Hill – this is where I took this photo from (above) and is probably one of the best views across the valley.

You can check out my definitive guide to stargazing in the South Downs here. This guide is packed full of information and is perfect for planning a stargazing trip here.

Honestly, I can’t rave about the South Downs enough. It’s very easy to see why it’s one of the top Hampshire destinations to visit!

This post was in association with Visit Hampshire promoting some of the best things to do in the area. As always, views are entirely my own and without bias.

Solent Sky Museum

A place to investigate Southampton's history of aviation.

Between 1908 and the 1960s, lots of experimental and development work regarding aircraft took place in the city.

There was 26 aircraft companies set up and the first Spitfire flew over Southampton.

At Solent Sky Museum you can see the air frames of a Super marine Spitfire and Super marine S6a, aero-engines and many more.

You can board the aircraft and get to experience what it was like for the pilots of these planes. There are also guided tours of the flight deck.

What people have said: "My son and I visited, on the 7th March, to gather information for a school project about local history - WW2 and the Spitfire. We had a great visit and enjoyed all the displays, we were offered the chance to go up into the cockpit of the largest plane exhibited. The member of staff was friendly and informative, he chatted to my son and pointed us to the displays that would help him with his project. The displays were well laid out and gave us plenty of information. On our way out we stopped to look at the collection of second hand books in the hopes of finding a book or two that would give us more info on the Spitfire and it's role in the Battle of Britain. The same member of staff actually went to search through the stock not on display and came back with several books. He and the chap on the desk helped us look through them to find the best one. The Museum is great, but made even better by the staff, whose knowledge and enthusiasm to give the best experience possible was second to none."

Steamship Shieldhall

family places to visit hampshire

In Southampton you have the chance to witness the largest working steam ship in Britain and the last of its type.

The Steamship Shieldhall is a member of the National Historic Fleet According to their site it is "operated entirely by unpaid volunteers. Since 1988, the membership has steadily increased and today stands at over 800 people, worldwide."

The public have the chance to see the vessel in action or even just go to get a taste of the 'golden age' of steam travel.

One visitor said: "Took the two oldest on the Shieldhall on Sunday 15th, last trip of the season. A fabulous day out, after a short visit to the Titanic Display in Sea City, we joined Shieldhall nect to the old QE2 Terminal.

"We headed up to the top of the docks before turning & sailing down The Solent. As always we were made very welcome all over the ship. Oldest (17) was invited to blow the whistle by the Captain, who then handed the Typhon siren over to middle son (11) despite the combination of a small boy and a piece of noise making equipment being a generally unwise idea.

"Previous short trips from Southampton have been rather pedestrian, but this time the engines were ticking over nicely at half ahead. We were down below when the bells went for full ahead off Fawley Power Station. Throughout the trip there was much tooting as other ships went past, including the Red Funnel ferries & a cruise liner. Interestingly enough we also 'blew soot' after a suitable warning The general impression was of a very happy, welcoming ship with the Captain & Crew saying goodbye to passengers.

"An excellent day out that I would recommend to you all."

Tudor House and Garden

Take a step back in time as you explore the Tudor house and its gardens, imagining what it was like for those who walked Southampton's streets 400 years ago.

It's a great place for all ages as there are various activities and interactive technology with different displays to keep the entire family entertained.

The tour is self-guided which is great as you can take your time to make sure you absorb your surroundings. It's home to some of England's best-preserved medieval town walls.

There are over 90 listed buildings in The Old Town and more than 30 ancient monuments. Some of the walls date back to 1290 with the western walls build after 1338 upon Edward III's demand to protect the town.

One visitor said: "Visited here with my daughter on 3rd February. Arrived shortly after opening and able to tour the house, garden and palace at our own pace. The audio guide included in the admission price was excellent, guiding us and enabling us to hear about the history of the house and it’s occupants over time. The gardens are well maintained and stocked with herbs that are cultivated in a uniform fashion. The tour ended in the cellar which was used during WWII as and air raid shelter. The tour took us around 2hrs 30mins."

Hayling Billy Trail

A gorgeous walk to take especially on a sunny day. The Hayling Billy Trail is a coastal path running along the west coast of Hayling Island and is popular among hikers, horse riders and cyclists.

It's a total of 5 miles, all off the road which means you can enjoy the serene tranquillity of nature in peace, perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

One reviewer said: "Fantastic walk esp in good weather. You can go all the way from havant and langstone down the western side of the island, with great views and Numerous picnic spots and lots of areas only metres from the sea. Wonderful on a warm sunny day. This must have been one scenic railway. Tip if you want to paddle etc go at high tide."

New Forest National Park

New Forest, Hampshire

A National Park that is bursting with incredible wildlife. Wild ponies, cows, sheep and an array of rare beautiful plants.

You can explore for hours in this park as its 139,900 acres, a great place for a walk, to take the dogs, camp or have a picnic surrounded by nature.

Many people from across the UK travel to the New Forest to marvel at how breathtaking it really is.

One visitor said:"which is why I call this place home. There are many walks to be found from heath to plain but I would recommend any of the gravel turn offs on the road from Lyndhurst to Christchurch where you can pick up a trail and get lost in this magical place."

Moors Valley Country Park and Forest

family places to visit hampshire

This country park and forest has plenty to see in its 1,000 acres of incredible woodland.

There is plenty to do in this park which makes it a great place to visit for all the family. There's miles of glorious walking routes with woodland play areas for the little ones to play along the way. Along with that there's a model steam railway, golf pitch and putt and a restaurant to visit for a spot to eat after a busy day exploring.

If you fancy something a bit more adventurous then you have the chance to swing from the treetops at Go-Ape (if you book in advance). The activities in the park are free and you only have to pay administration per car.

One visitor said: " A great place for having fun in the outdoors. There is a play trail (with giant wooden structures for playing on), woodland trails for walking, jogging and cycling. There are 2 great playgrounds and a lake you can walk round. There also other activities you can pay for, such as Go Ape, Segway and a miniature steam train. Other reviews mention the parking, but I think it is fairly reasonable as you don't have to pay admission charges.

Sir Harold Hillier Gardens

Named after Sir Harold, a distinguished plantsman who decided in 1953 to establish the Gardens. His main aim was to bring together the most comprehensive and unrivalled collection of trees, shrubs and hardy plants in the UK.

He left the gardens to the Hampshire County Council in 1977 and the authority has continued to run the gardens as a charity in order to conserve, educate and recreate.

Explore over 9,500 plants which span across 180 acres along with a National Plant Collection there is plenty to see.

One visitor said: "Our first time here (despite using their garden centres!) was a lovely experience. The winter garden really does have some stunning sights. Discovered the fragrance from several Daphnes was amazing. The site as a whole was bigger than I had anticipated so we have more to see another time- and there will be another time. As a part-time horticulture student it was so helpful to have all the plants labelled. Although we chose to only have sandwiches, the lunches looked good, plentiful & very reasonably priced. I think the gardens should appeal to people of different ages."

Royal Navy Submarine Museum

family places to visit hampshire

A place where you can explore the entire naval story throughout history. In 1911 the Dockyard Museum opened which later turned into The Royal Navy Museum and then the National Museum of the Royal Navy in 2009.

You can get up close to some incredible Royal Navy submarines including the HMS Alliance which is the only submarine from the Second World War.

Absorb the history of the crew throughout decades at sea and experience what it's like to face the dangers of the sea. See the HMS Queen Elizabeth when you take the water bus to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

One visitor said: "There are numerous reasons to visit this museum, the obvious one being HMS Alliance which can be toured if you go and book in at the reception for a guide to show you round. This is well worth doing, however there is more to this museum than just Alliance. It contains the first Royal Navy submarine, Holland 1, which is fascinating along with the only remaining X class sub. Strongly advise going to have a look at these, the people who served on them must have been incredibly brave. When you see them you will know what we mean."

Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum

Known as 'FAST' this museum was founded in 1993 as a way to protect and honour the aeronautical heritage of Farnborough.

Proud of its town's history of aviation and its huge contribution to air science, the museum is a place to learn while observing stunning aircrafts at the same time.

There is plenty to see on your visit such as displays of the original RAE research, Jet Engines and helicopter rotors, scale models and a full sized replica of the Cody Flyer and flight stimulation.

A visitor said: "What a wonderful tour of the F.A.S.T. museum in Farnborough. A diamond that is missed by most locals but what a treat. The place is run entirely by volunteers - I was amazed by their knowledge and experience. They made us feel so welcome. We were there for 2 hours but barely skimmed the surface of the heritage they are custodians of. Thank you so much for looking after us."

Hensting Alpacas

If you love alpacas then this is a perfect way to spend the day with your family. With over 60 alpacas and some expecting babies this year, you can easily spend a day here.

You get the chance to get up close and personal with the animals which have become increasingly popular over the years.

Because there is a set amount of tickets you do have to book ahead and you can even have your own picnic next to them.

Feel their soft fleece, feed them and walk them next to the stunning river. A great experience for all the family.

A visitor said: " I booked the previous evening so it was very short notice, the experience was better then i thought it would be, the walk is along the river and lasts near on 2 hrs, the staff were helpful and friendly, i have always loved alpacas . so i was in my element, you get to walk 2 on the day and are able to feed them, mine were well behaved and walked along nicely, its fun for any age and keeps you fit, if you love alpacas then this is a must even when it poured down they behaved so well, you need wellies this time of year !

Places to visit in Hampshire

Visit Hampshire for nautical cities with old-age naval war ships, sail-shaped towers and resurrected Tudor merchant vessels. There's lots to see and many things to do in Hampshire. Historic docks meet modern marinas on the Solent coast. Stay inland for the leafy New Forest National Park swarming with cute wild ponies, donkeys and Georgian market towns filled with yachties. Museums in this south coast county come packed with plenty of armour, military paraphernalia and submarines to keep little (and big) soldiers amused on rainy days. Become a knight of the round table or pay homage to Jane Austen in the cathedral city Winchester.

If so, the Superman Zipline Tour in Morningside, Charlestown, might be your ideal adventure.

If heights are more your speed, the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway in Franconia is an experience like no other.

This is a historic resort where they maintain the weathered charm of those who came before so if a rustic retreat is your thing then this is the place for you.

8. Yurt Home, Bretton Woods

  • Address: Bretton Woods, New Hampshire
  • Size: 3 bedrooms and 2 baths
  • Price: $416 /night
  • Amenities: free wifi and hot tub
  • Rating: 4.9 Stars

If you prefer the glamorous side of camping more then this yurt home will be more your style. This home was inspired by the unique design of a yurt but could be more described as a cabin or a house. There are plenty of modern amenities sprinkled throughout so you won’t miss a single modern convenience. The property outside is just as beautiful with an ice rink in the winter, a fire pit, and a bubbling hot tub. During your stay make use of the close by river for a little bit of tubing in the summer or a swim. Nearby there are plenty of hiking trails and scenic drives after all you are in the White Mountains, which is my favorite place in New Hampshire. Head over to Crawford Notch State Park for amazing hikes like Mount Willard, or go to Franconia Notch State Park and take a short hike up to Artist Bluff for one of the best views in all of the state. Travel to the other side of Mount Washington and get a ticket to the Cog Railway which takes you all the way up to the top of the mountain.

9. Authentic Nomatic Tipi, Chatham

  • Address: Chatham, New Hampshire
  • Size: 1 bedroom
  • Price: $80.50 /night
  • Amenities: Barbeque grill

This authentic tipi was made by Nomadic Tipi and sits on a raised platform. The wood stove inside should keep things plenty of toasty during your stay, although you may want to make your stay in the summer months. The Tipi sits on a property known as Toadhill right on the northeastern part of the state right next to Maine. Head south through Gorham and you can find the town of Jackson and get views of Mount Washington there is also a famous covered bridge you will want to visit on your way. You can even drive to the top for an epic adventure. If you positively love unique stays then this place is filled with them from converted buses, yurts, tiny house trails, and so much more. The Tipi is designed to be a no-frills stay where one can connect with nature, that being said there is no running water or electricity so it is a great opportunity to unplug and get away from it all. On the property, there are trails for hiking and biking so you can really reconnect with nature. Toadhill also plans an annual music festival so make sure to keep up to date on all thats happening there by visiting the Toadhill website.

Isn’t there something just so tranquil and peaceful about being right on the water? When you look at the rivers and lakes in New England I have to say I think New Hampshire has the best ones. Everything from trickling mountain streams to the lakes region of the state is just beautiful. So stay right on the water with some unique stays or better yet, stay right on the water.

10. The Lincoln Cottage, Gilford

  • Address: Gilford, New Hampshire
  • Size: 5 bedrooms and 3 baths
  • Price: $995 /night
  • Amenities: Free wifi, hot tub, and boathouse

Lake Winnipesaukee has to be the most beautiful lake in all of New England. I have driven by it so many times, I have taken a boat out in the water, and I have seen it in all its stunning glory in every season. I could never get enough of the views and if you stay at the Lincoln Cottage you don’t have to ever take your eyes off this natural wonder. Perched high on a hill overlooking the lake this mansion certainly is unique all while maintaining a historic charm. The house has received plenty of modern updates over the years but none of it takes away from the quintessential New England look we all love. On the property is also a boat house so bring your own vessel of choice and take a spin out on the lake. The mansion is huge with plenty of space for a large group and still has room to explore even more. Nearby there are so many great things to see and do like Gunstock Ski Resort , Weirs Beach , Funspot , and scenic train rides. Those staying in this luxury lake house will not be disappointed.

11. Harborside, Laconia

  • Address: Laconia, New Hampshire
  • Price: $400 /night
  • Amenities: Pool and hot tub
  • Rating: 4.8 Stars

What better way to enjoy Lake Winnipesaukee than to stay on a houseboat floating on the water itself? Get your sea legs ready because you will be boarding the docked Harborside for a night unlike anything else. Allow the cadence of the water to relax you to sleep and enjoy the top-notch quality on board. While you stay on this houseboat you can also you all of the amenities of Akwa Marina. Enjoy the large beach, the fish-shaped swimming pool area with a hot tub, a restaurant, fire pits, beach volleyball, and so much more. You probably won’t want to leave, but if you do then there are nearby arcades, mini golf, shopping, and tons to do in this lovely little town.

Have you ever spent the night at any of these unique places to stay in NH? Which ones are your favorite and which ones will you add to your bucket list this year? There is so much to see in do in the wonderful state of New Hampshire it truly is a special place even if you have to travel halfway across America just to get there.
