Santa’s Magical Journey in to Christmas is located at the Thursford Collection, not far from Fakenham, North Norfolk.

Walk through a fantasy winter wonderland of polar bears, seals, penguins, elves and snowmen on your journey to visit Father Christmas.

Parent’s View

Purely from a traditional viewpoint I would’ve preferred it if it had been called “Father Christmas’ Magical Journey in to Christmas” but that didn’t detract from this family attraction, which was very nice. It is great for young children, probably up to about 8 years old, but especially for the really young ones who get very excited about Christmas. It was nice to see a few old steam engines dotted along the route, and the animatronic animals went down well with the kids. We have been a couple of times and the presents are pretty good quality, though the boys did want to open theirs straight away!

There are a couple of restaurants to eat in, but they can get busy around meal times so plan accordingly. Also, on one visit the card reader at one restaurant wasn’t working so we had to resort to cash (we just had enough money for a snack!), so it may be worth having a few pounds just in case.

Duration of visit: 30 minutes walk through the magical journey and seeing Santa, plus maybe an hour plus seeing other features and a quick bite to eat.

Imagine this: Our excitement levels were already through the roof for the Christmas Spectacular at Thursford. Little did we know that an additional dose of holiday magic awaited us with an invite to the Enchanted Journey of Light. Get ready for the inside scoop in this review of the Thursford Enchanted Journey of Light, where the holiday spirit soared to new heights!

What is the Thursford Enchanted Journey of Light?

The Thursford Journey of Light is a magical experience that takes visitors on an enchanting adventure through a world of fantasy and wonder. The journey begins in the Fantasyland Building, where you walk through charming scenes with adorable animatronic penguins, polar bears, and giant teddy bears. You’ll venture behind the scenes of Santa’s workshop, where industrious elves load Santa’s sleigh and craft toys using a wondrous wrapping machine.

The adventure doesn’t end indoors; it also includes the Lantern Light Extravaganza which is outside. Here, guests are treated to a huge display of luminous sculptures that bring fantasy to life. From a fantasy underwater world to the wilds of the North Pole via the plains of Africa, the outdoor exhibit showcases a dazzling array of creatures and scenes that captivate the imagination.

Our Experience at the Thursford Enchanted Journey of Light

While the primary reason for our visit to Thursford was the Christmas Spectacular, we were also invited to explore the Enchanted Journey of Light, and it turned out to be a delightful addition to our festive experience.

When we arrived at Thursford, we were greeted by the Queen’s Guard and Household Cavalry (well, life-sized figurines).  I was impressed with how realistic they looked.

Entering Fantasyland, we stepped into a realm of animated displays that captivated us with meticulous attention to detail. Surrounded by bustling activity, we found ourselves almost missing some of the action taking place above us.

The festive winter landscapes skilfully integrated steam engines, while animatronic penguins, polar bears, and a Teddy Bear family enhanced the overall charm.

A highlight was the snowmen joyfully engaging in a snowball fight, infusing the atmosphere with playfulness. After a bit we found ourselves at the North Pole, where we witnessed busy elves preparing for the big day, accompanied by Rudolph and other reindeer poised to pull Santa’s sleigh.

After soaking up the wonders inside Fantasyland, it was time to take the excitement outdoors. The Light Trail lured us with its dazzling path of lights, guiding us to an awe-inspiring surprise waiting in the top meadow.

The captivating play between the darkness and the vibrant hues of the illuminated displays left us spellbound. I was amazed at the sheer variety of figurines and lights that awaited.

The lantern light trail kicked off with a journey through Candyland with larger-than-life sweets and a charming gingerbread house. It felt like stepping into a living version of a fairy tale, like Hansel and Gretel.

Continuing on, the next section felt like we had entered a zoo. Our path was adorned with a diverse array of animals, and among our favourites were the majestic snow leopard, the impressive rhinoceros, and the charming Madagascar penguins. Since it is the holiday season there were a few reindeer too.

Next, the trail led us into an Asian-inspired scene, where vibrant reds and intricate Chinese characters added a cultural touch.

The final section transported us under the sea, where lively displays of colourful fish, a colossal conch shell, delicate sea plants, jellyfish, and an enchanting seahorse awaited our exploration.

Each section of the Enchanted Journey of Light presented a unique and mesmerizing world, and the overall experience left us in awe. It truly is a one-of-a-kind adventure, more vibrant and magical than any other light trail we’ve encountered. Although we had seen photos before, we didn’t really have an idea of the scale, variety or impact of the Enchanted Journey of Light.

Review of Thursford Enchanted Journey of Light

I knew Thursford fully embraces the spirit of Christmas , but the Enchanted Journey of Light surprised us with the sheer volume and quality of displays. Everywhere I turned, there were picture-perfect moments, showcasing not only a multitude of scenes but with many tiny and thoughtful details that made it interesting for all ages. The effort and creativity invested in its development must have been immense.

Fantasyland proved to be a delightful spectacle, with its adorable displays evoking smiles effortlessly. Children would undoubtedly revel in the charming characters and animals, while adults could appreciate the artistic qualities and the quirky whimsical scenes. Let’s be honest – everyone’s still a child at heart.

Other Things to See and Do at Thursford at Christmas

Thursford offers more than just the Enchanted Journey of Light during the holiday season. The Thursford Spectacular, a mesmerizing 3-hour variety show, is a must-see to truly believe. There is also a funfair on select nights that can be visited along with the Enchanted Journey of Light (rides are an additional fee).

Additionally, there’s the Pavilion Restaurant, a cosy cafe within Fantasyland, and the Barn Cafe. Don’t forget to explore the shops, where you can discover special gifts for your loved ones.

For a festive visit with the kids to meet Father Christmas , you need to book Santa’s Magical Journey, which also includes the Enchanted Journey of Light.

No, but Christmas Spectacular ticket holders can enjoy discounted entry to the Enchanted Journey of Light before their scheduled show (between 12:00 -13:00 for matinees and between 17:00 – 18:00 for evening performances). Please note that the special rate cannot be pre-booked and is payable on the day at the Fantasy Land entrance, upon presentation of your Spectacular ticket/s. This exclusive offer is also open to Spectacular ticket holders on days when it’s not available for general public booking. Do keep in mind that these tickets are subject to availability, and entry is not guaranteed.

What Will I See At Thursford Enchanted Journey of Light

Looking for a fun, mesmerising trail for the family to enjoy this festive season, You will definitely want to add Thursford Enchanted Journey of Light to your list, you can either visit and do the Journey of Light by itself or combine it with the Christmas Spectacular.

Thursford Christmas Spectacular was unfortunately cancelled in 2020, due to the pandemic, lots of people were left disappointed not to see their favourite Christmas show, however the team at Thursford came up with a stunning alternative, the Enchanted Journey of Light.

This year they are BOTH happening! (Although the Light Journey is slightly shorter due to having the Spectacular taking place) AND Father Christmas is BACK!

Thursford Enchanted Journey of Light

The Thursford Enchanted Journey of Light, is a magical walk-through experience for all ages running from 19th November 2022 until 28th December 2022

This indoor wonderland trail of steam engines, kinetic fairy-tale characters and an immersive light and sound experience (which has incorporated Santa’s Magical Journey) that leads to a 4-acre Lantern Light Extravaganza of beautiful and breath-taking outdoor luminous sculptures, from a fantasy forest of jungle animals to the wilds of the North Pole.

Father Christmas is back at Thursford for 2022, it is not included in the Enchanted Journey of Light. If you want to do the Enchanted Journey  and  see Father Christmas you book through the  Santa’s Magical Journey Page

Your journey will progress into the Fantasyland Building, you will travel past the penguins and polar bears to the giant-sized teddy bears!

Get ready to see how the elves have loaded Santa’s sleigh, then past the busy elves hard at work in the toy factory using the wondrous wrapping machine!

Throughout your journey you’ll meet lots of fantasy land characters including the snowman family, make sure you watch out for their snowballs!

As well as the characters, there are lots of beautiful lights and lit up animals, making the enchanted journey a truly spectacular experience.

Once you’ve completed the indoor part of the christmas journey, its time to venture outside to the Lantern Light Extravaganza, and it certainly was exactly that!

Your journey continues as you venture outside to the Lantern Light Extravaganza, with lots of creatures to marvel at- a beautiful, breath-taking festival of luminous sculptures, from a fantasy underwater world to the wilds of the North Pole.

The underwater area had some stunning jellyfish, turtles, fish, all looking amazing lit up.

One of my favourite areas was the jungle, with Rhinos, Tigers, Lions, Giraffes and Elephants.

So many different lights and all spread out beautifully to ensure everyone could see them, whilst maintaining enough space between yourselves and another group, and plenty of room for everyone to take their photos.

Both children loved discovering the next part of the journey, and guessing which animals they would find next.

*Vintage funfair rides are not included in the price

Tickets for The Enchanted Journey of Light are available separately through the website HERE cost is £20 per person. Children aged 2 and under FREE (a ticket must still be booked for Children aged 2 and under). There is an additional £1.50 transaction fee per booking.

Entry into the Enchanted Journey of Light before or after the show is available to Christmas Spectacular ticket holders, but it is only guaranteed if you purchase a ticket on days when the event is running to non Spectacular customers.

Christmas Spectacular customers can access the Journey on the day without pre booking, but this is subject to availability and not guaranteed.

For anyone with additional needs, there is a relaxed afternoon on 4th December where queuing will be less, music will be quieter and lighting will be softer.

We were invited along to Thursford Christmas Spectacular and Enchanted Journey of Light for the Press night, all thoughts and opinions are our own .

Santa’s Magical Journey and Thursford

One of the best things about Christmas if you have children is meeting Father Christmas.  That is until you have to queue for 2 hours with some very bored, very miserable children for a 3 minutes with Father Christmas and a very cheap toy at the end of it.  Last year, in order to avoid this and see the little darlings smiling broadly, I booked Santa’s Magical Journey at Thursford.  As I said this was to avoid the queuing as you are given a start time for your magical Journey in which you can see Father Christmas and they do control the number of people visiting.  This was worth the admission price alone but I couldn’t have imagined how wonderful the journey would be.  You are transported into a kind of Santa’s workshop at Lapland experience with elves busy making toys and polar bears, Christmas Trees and lots of lots of lights and sparkle, before you meet Father Christmas himself.  It is certainly worth the price of admission and although the children’s tickets are £15.50 each, both my children received beautiful age appropriate wooden toys.

There is also a 4d Christmas film which the children really loved.

Definitely, one the children and the older children will enjoy alike.
