New Lanzarote Public Transport App

Today (31st August) sees the release of an new free Lanzarote App dedicated to public transport on the island. The Lanzarote Council has colaborated with Arrecife Bus to offer passengers detailed information, and in real time, on interurban buses. The App is available in Spanish, English and German and will prove to be very usefull for visitors on the island enabling them to check bus routes and schedules and locate stops. It has been designed in real time so passengers can also check any late changes to routes and times. The app is made up of eight modules with the following functionality: Route: in this section you can see which is the most suitable line to reach the destination. Next Bus: shows the arrival time of the bus at the stop where the user is. Next Stop: once the device’s GPS has been activated and while on board the bus, in this section you can find out the next stops. Lines and Hours: shows all available lines, their frequency and departure times. Rates: know the available tickets, their conditions, prices and where they can be requested. Favorites: in this section you can see the stops, buses and routes most used by the user, that is, the favorites. Real Time Tracker: information on line alterations, such as traffic cuts or specific detours, as well as relevant information on the interurban transport service. Card Balance: this option allows you to check the balance if you have purchased a transport card.

But to make sure your trip to Lanzarote is a success , it’s best to have a few things in mind and be well prepared. On this page, we’ve put together all our Fuerteventura travel tips to help you make the right choices and find the trip that’s right for you: when, how, where…

The essentials for a successful trip to Lanzarote

When to go and for how long Lanzarote’s temperatures are very pleasant all year round. High season for all vacation periods in Europe, even in winter when travelers are looking for a little sun and warmth. May, September and October are often excellent months to make the most of the island. We recommend a 10-day stay to discover the whole island.

Where to go in Fuerteventura Our favorite cities to stay are:

The island isn’t very big, so you can stay in one place to explore everything.

How to get around It may be tempting to stay in the hotels with their superb swimming pools and all amenities, but we recommend renting a car to discover the island’s magnificent landscapes. It’s really easy to drive – see the car offers on our favorite platform .

Our top 5 things to do We love many places on Lanzarote, it’s one of our favorite islands. Apart from discovering beautiful beaches, our top 3 are..:

• Take a boat tour from Puerto del Carmen to see the dolphins – see the availability of the tour we really liked .
• Visit the island of La Graciosa – book your round trip by boat
• Admire the landscapes of Timanfaya National Park – book a tour if you don’t drive
• Walking around Montana Cuervo volcano

Not to worry A trip to Lanzarote is very easy: it’s not big, the roads are in good condition… Just remember to protect yourself from the sun and check the sea conditions before jumping in.

Tip 1. When to go to Lanzarote

Lanzarote is open all year round. It’s an island with very little rainfall, even in winter. So there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy sunny weather whatever the month.

Depending on what you’re looking for:

• For guaranteed, substantial heat: June to September
• For swimming: July to October
• For hiking and exploring: April, May, September and October
• For winter sun : December to March (but the sea water is much lower).

But here are a few things you should know:

• Crowd – The island is fairly large, with few towns. You’ll never get the impression of a huge crowd. The biggest tourist influx is during school vacations in European countries. The island also gets quite a few tourists in winter, as people seek out the sun!
• Weather – Temperatures become very high in summer, are very pleasant in the intervening months and are always pleasant in winter. You’ll be able to walk around in a t-shirt during the day in winter, but you’ll just need a jacket for the evenings.

• Wind – It’s hard to predict how much wind you’re going to get, and how it might affect your vacation. On the whole, there’s more wind in June and July (which is why the world windsurfing championships are held there at this time).
• Swimming – Summer is the best time to bathe in warm waters, once it has had time to warm up.
• There’s nothing special to see at certain seasons, as there’s little planting.

Tip 2. How long to stay

The island is not very big The drive from Playa Blanca in the south to Orzola in the north takes 1 hour 10 minutes.

• If you’re planning to enjoy the beach and the hotel, plan ahead.
• However, if you want to discover the island’s most iconic sites, 5 to 6 days is all you need.
• And if you want to see more of what the island has to offer, we recommend 10 days (see our recommended itineraries for 2 weeks ).

Lanzarote is an island in the Canary Islands. It is part of political Europe, being a territory of Spain. In terms of geography, it lies to the east of the Canary Islands, not far from the Sahara coast of Africa.

As it’s an island, you can get there by plane or ferry.

4. Flights to Lanzarote

Lanzarote airport is on the east coast, south of the capital Arrecife and north of the large tourist town of Puerto del Carmen. Its code is ACE.

Direct flights from many major European cities: Paris, London, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Zurich, Milan, Leeds… Ryanair offers many low-cost flights to Fuerteventura.

5. Ferry to Lanzarote

You can also reach Fuerteventura from the other Canary Islands or from Cadiz in mainland Spain.

6. Visa and identity papers for Lanzarote

Lanzarote is part of Spain, and therefore within the Schengen area. If you are one of them, you don’t need a visa. Otherwise, you need a Schengen Visa.

For everyone, you need a valid ID to travel within the country, and also to take a plane or ferry.

Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is the most famous and largest of all Lanzarote’s seaside towns. It has everything you need: beaches, casino, shopping, fun activities, zoo, golf…. What’s more, the town is central enough to easily explore the whole island. The town is quite large. It takes a long time to get from the marina to the other end.

Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca is our favorite destination. We really like the town’s atmosphere, its pretty beaches, its seafront promenade, its restaurants… It too offers plenty of activities, including a water park . On the other hand, it’s further south, which adds 30min to 45min to the journey when we explore the north.

Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise was developed for tourism. So you’ll find very practical facilities and plenty of parking close to the beaches (which is not the case in other resorts). That’s a good thing! What we love about Costa Teguise is its relaxed atmosphere and the fact that it’s so conveniently located, with easy access to all Lanzarote’s attractions.

The capital Arrecife is not really touristy.

8. Best hotels in Lanzarote

If the hotel is more important to you than the location, some of our favorite hotels are:

• 5 stars: We loved our stay at the Hotel Fariones in the heart of Puerto del Carmen, elegant and practical. – see prices, pictures and availability
• Boutique and Adults-only: We fell in love with Hotel La Calma in Playa Blanca (Calalanzarote) for its bright decor and peaceful ambience. – see prices, pictures and availability
• Families: The Mynd Yaiza hotel in Playa Blanca with its children’s pool, playrooms and small waterslides… lots of fun to be had! – see prices, pictures and availability
• Luxury villas with private pools We were won over by the villas at Hotel Villa Kamezi in Playa BLanca, its bar and restaurant. – see prices, pictures and availability
• Aparthotel We were won over by the peace and quiet of the Nazaret apartments in Costa Teguise. If you don’t want to eat out all the time, this is a great option! – see prices, pictures and availability

9. Single or multiple units?

It takes 1h10 to drive from Playa Blanca in the south to Orzola in the north. So you can easily explore the whole island from a single hotel. But if you’re staying for more than a week, we like to split our stay between two places to enjoy two different atmospheres, and vary the restaurants.

10. Always check parking conditions

If you choose to stay in the heart of one of these towns or near one of their beaches, it can be difficult to find parking during the day. So be sure to check the parking conditions for your choice of hotels.

11 à 14. Getting around Lanzarote

Here are the 4 options for exploring the island of Lanzarote . Of course, if you’re staying in the hotel, all you have to do is take a cab or bus.

11. Rent a car

Our preferred option is to rent a car . Prices are reasonable for an island and driving is easy. A small car is sufficient, but you can take any size you like, as there are no narrow streets and parking spaces are fairly wide.

The platform we personally use (since we discovered them) is Discovercars . As soon as we decide on a destination and dates, we look at their offers and the types of cars available. After research, they often have the best offers for our needs. It is one of the highest rated comparison sites in the market.

12. Excursions

From most hotels you can also find numerous excursions to explore certain parts of the island: Timanfaya Park, the attractions of César Manrique, volcanic formations… See all offers on our preferred platform: Getyourguide

If you’re not traveling too far from your hotel, you can also choose to visit a place by cab. In Lanzarote, you can take advantage of tourist offers to visit certain places (tour loops).

14. Public transport

There are buses connecting all the major towns in Fuertenventura. However, it will not be possible to get to more remote areas. See routes .

15 to 18 – Food and beverages

15. is tap water safe to drink in lanzarote.

Yes, you can drink tap water. There’s no danger. Just be aware that Lanzarote receives very little rain. So tap water comes from desalinated seawater. So it doesn’t taste the best, or the taste we’re used to. Most people drink bottled mineral water.

16. Type of food

Lanzarote is a tourist island, so you’ll find everything:

• Mediterranean cuisine, tapas
• Italian restaurants
• Indian restaurants
• Chinese restaurants

We were just put off by the small number of gourmet and bistronomic restaurants. But if there’s no demand… But we did find a few. Among other things, the Restaurant des Villas Kamezi was a superb experience.

17. Bread and water

Please note that the bread placed on the table is chargeable if you touch it. And water, even in carafes, is not free.

Tipping is not obligatory in Lanzarote. It’s a good idea to round up if you’re paying cash, or to leave a few euros if you’re really satisfied with the service. It’s a voluntary act, to reward quality.

All year round, pack light summer clothes. And if you’re traveling during the winter months, add a small jacket for evenings or potentially cloudy days.

20. Sun protection

Beware, the sun can be brutal. Don’t take any risks, protect yourself with sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.

21. Language

Lanzarote is in Spain. The language is Spanish. But as it’s a very touristy island, almost everyone speaks English. We also met a lot of teams who also spoke German and French. But few Italian- and Dutch-speaking encounters.

22. Power strip and adapter

In Spain, and therefore in Lanzarote, the plugs are 2 round holes (Type E which also work with a Type C). If it doesn’t match yours, consider bringing a plug adapter.

23 to 26 – Safety when travelling to Lanzarote

The island of Lanzarote is quite safe. Nothing special to specify. Like all tourist destinations, there can be a certain amount of theft. Don’t leave anything visible in the car. See our article on safety .

24. Insurance

If you are a resident of the European Union, your national medical cover also applies. Don’t forget to ask for your European medical insurance card to make the process easier. If you are coming from outside the EU, remember to take out insurance.

25. What to do in an emergency

In Europe, 112 is the number for all emergencies: police, ambulance and fire. Operators on this number can speak several languages. This is the only number you need to keep in mind.

26. Using a VPN

As everywhere else, you run a risk when using shared wifi in hotels. We know, because we had a bad experience in a Paris hotel. We now systematically use a VPN to protect our data, especially banking data.

Lanzarote has a good choice of beaches:

• Sandy beaches in towns with all amenities

But there are also a few volcanoes. The colors are magnificent and you can enjoy a variety of landscapes: beaches, volcanoes and basalt columns. Even the ferry crossing is fascinating, with superb views of the Famara cliffs to the north of Lanzarote. To get there, we recommend

The island of Lanzarote lies just 125 kilometres off Africa’s Saharan Coast and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands (Spain). The island is 60km long and 20 km wide, making it the fourth largest island in the Archipelago. One of the first things that visitors notice is that nearly all of the buildings are painted white. This is largely thanks to the work of local artist, César Manrique , who worked tirelessly to protect the island’s traditional architectural style and avoid over-development.

Lanzarote has a Subtropical Desert climate with average maximum daytime temperatures ranging from about 21°C in January to 29°C in August. The island receives, on average, just 18 days of rain per year, making it a very popular destination for sun-seekers.

Volcanic Scenery

The island is dominated by volcanic scenery: the spectacular Montañas del Fuego were created during the eruptions that took place between 1730 and 1736 when over 100 volcanoes erupted – devastating a large part of the South-west of the island. Even today, temperatures just below the surface reach over 400°C.

The last eruptions on the island took place in 1824 near Tiagua, though they were nowhere near as devastating as the previous episode.

Many of Lanzarote’s most popular tourist attractions are also volcanic in origin, including El Golfo (a flooded and partially eroded volcanic crater) and Jameos del Agua (part of one the World’s longest volcanic caves).

Unusually for a volcanic island, many of Lanzarote’s beaches are of golden sand ( Playa Blanca , Papagayo , Famara ) – and even white sand (Caleton Blanco). As you night expect, much of the outdoor activities are based around the sea, with great surfing at Famara , windsurfing at Costa Teguise and several great scuba diving locations around the island.

Lanzarote has three major tourist resort towns ; Puerto del Carmen is the island’s biggest resort with the most nightlife (and is closest to the airport), Playa Blanca has great beaches and a lovely Marina, while Costa Teguise is just a stone’s throw from the island capital, Arrecife .

I f you've ever spent time at a networking event, made small talk at your kids' soccer games, or scrolled through a dating app, you'll know that "travel" is something almost everyone will tell you they enjoy. Couple that with an attachment to our smartphones that borders on co-dependent, and it's no surprise to learn that travel apps are a hot commodity. Some of the best innovations in travel come in the form of apps. Staying in touch with people at home, travel planning, staying organized on the road, or connecting with other travelers? Not only is there an app for that, there are many apps for that. 

To help you sort through the plethora of what's out there, here are some travel-ready apps to make your vacation a blast. We've sourced suggestions from people who travel for a living and those who leave their local area only rarely, so no matter how often you jet-set, there is an app for you.

If your cell plan doesn't include international roaming, you can get slammed with steep fees for using mobile data outside your own country.

There are a few ways to get around roaming charges, including buying a local SIM card for the country you are traveling in, using a Wi-Fi stick , or investing in a dual SIM phone, like those from Samsung, Apple, or Google. One of the easiest and cheapest options though, is an eSIM app like Airalo . Airalo was one of the first in the eSIM game and continues to be popular with travelers. Fans of the app point to how easy it is to download and get started quickly, and how much it saves in fees. On the other hand, some users have noticed a discrepancy in how well it works in different countries. One reviewer on TrustPilot states "We do NOT recommend this plan given the extremely poor performance in Vietnam" despite noting excellent service in Hong Kong. 

Airalo is a paid service, available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Google Maps is often the default app travelers reach for when navigating new territory. It's a trusted resource for a lot of reasons, including the ease of finding reviews and info for even very small businesses. But it's not the only map app out there, nor is it the best in every situation. The main advantage of Maps.me over Google Maps is that it is based on user-generated information. Particularly for folks who are getting around on foot, this "boots on the ground" approach is excellent and more direct than reporting problems to Google Maps . It also means that if you find a cool place on your travels and want to make sure other travelers can find it, you can add it to a map.

Like Google Maps and other useful way-finding apps, you can download maps and bookmark points of interest for offline use, although the background information on locations is not as robust as on Google Maps. Maps.me also allows you to access various modes of transportation while offline, which Google doesn't. 

Maps.me is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Cash's position as king is increasingly precarious. On your travels, you'll find cashless options in places you might not expect. The mass availability of mobile payment platforms like Square means you may be able to whip out your phone or card at Swiss coffee carts or Mexican street vendors. Wise (formerly Transferwise) lets you move between currencies seamlessly. Wise lets you operate in 40 currencies, which is particularly handy if you are traveling to several different countries. They advertise charges that are less than the major banks. However, some users have complained about complications with money transfers, so be forewarned if you intend to use this app for sending money. 

Of note to travelers is the option to get an actual bank card that can function as an international debit card with a nominal conversion fee (not all bank cards can pay by debit in countries other than your home base.) Or, save a step and scan your phone to pay from your Wise account. 

Wise is available on the App Store and from Google Play. There is no charge to download the app, but fees are charged for some banking activities.

If you are going to be traveling from place to place on your vacation, you will want the Rome2Rio app on your phone. Enter your destination and departure location, and the app spits out the options and approximate costs for each leg of your journey. For instance, if you are in Edmonton, Canada, and want to get to the Thai island of Ko Yao Yai, the app will suggest six options, labeling the best, cheapest, and fastest combination of flight, minibus, and ferry. You can't purchase tickets through the app, although there are links to book accommodation that take you to Booking.com. Being able to purchase travel fares through the app would make things easier, especially if they were offered in a package, but the absence of that feature means you can investigate and compare prices from different booking operators , so we are putting it in the win column.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Rick Steves is recognized as a top voice in travel guides. His down-to-earth approach to travel has endeared multitudes of followers to him, spawning an industry of books, television shows, and a sprawling web presence that features how-to guides, articles, and an active travelers' forum. On top of all that, he has a free app for self-guided walking tours through many of Europe's top sights called Rick Steves Audio Europe . Reviewers of the app give it a high rating (4.7 on Google Play and 4.3 on the App Store) using superlatives like "This app is GOLD," and comparing the quality of the tours to paid audio tours. On the downside, it is difficult to sync the app on multiple devices, so if you are in a group you may all be at slightly different parts of the tour, which can be mildly annoying. There are a bunch of tour sites, with more added periodically.

The audio tours and accompanying maps are downloadable, so you don't need to worry about burning through mobile data or needing to rely on Wi-Fi. Rick Steve Audio Europe is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

How many trips come vividly back to life in your mind just by thinking about that one excellent bowl of Cacio e Pepe pasta or sun-drenched sip of a Paloma? Exploring a place through its flavors and discovering new spots to eat is a beloved part of travel. In Europe, TheFork (the French version is called LaForchette) is the go-to app for crowd-sourced restaurant reviews. Previously, the app also covered Australia, but at the start of 2024, it was announced they will be pulling out of Oz.

You can find Michelin-starred restaurants with months-long wait lists or little hole-in-the-wall spots by searching the name of the eating establishment, the city or neighborhood you want to eat in, or the kind of cuisine you are craving.

The app is worthy of its space on your phone just for the restaurant listings and reviews, but if you want to explore more of the capabilities, there are ways to expand its usefulness. You can make reservations, register to collect points, access discounts and specials at select spots, and pay through the app. TheFork is free to download and available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Looking for a little love on the road? The Fairytrail app might be the ticket to romance (or ROAMance) you are looking for. Aimed at digital nomads and van life devotees, the app is a nice addition to the dating lives of travelers of all stripes. Members are evaluated and assigned a fairytale character similar to enneagram-slash-Myers-Briggs personality types, which is a new and novel approach compared with other iPhone dating apps or Android dating apps .

Because the app is focused on people with nomadic lifestyles, matches are location-independent. The idea is that users of the app will be willing to travel to each other to meet and date. There is a setting that allows an extra layer of matching: dream places to visit. If you so choose, before chatting with a match you need to have an overlapping "bucket-list" destination. Previously, this was an unavoidable step but became an optional setting after it was changed in response to frustration expressed by reviewers. The app is being redesigned in 2024 and soliciting feedback from users. Stay tuned, it seems more happy endings are in store! Fairytrails is free to download with in-app purchases and is available from the App Store and from Google Play.

Price Scanner And Converter

A very unpleasant aspect of vacationing in another country is coming home to a shocking credit card bill. Part of the problem is the tendency of holidaymakers to spend like money isn't real, but the other problem is how difficult it is to calculate prices into your own currency. Sure, you can come up with shortcuts to do quick math, but that gives you an estimate rather than an exact cost. To help, there are many different currency converter apps out there, with features like real-time rate calculation and offline capability. The somewhat clunky-named Price Scanner and Converter takes it one step further by using your phone's camera to scan prices and display them automatically in your preferred currency (out of 150 global currencies.) New iPhone cameras also have a similar capability, but it isn't as seamless a process as using this app.

This price scanning app isn't presently available on Google Play, although there are similar apps to be found. The reviews are pretty overwhelmingly mediocre, so if you are on team Android, your best bet may be to download a regular currency converter and enter in prices the old-fashioned way.

Searching through your emails for confirmations and itineraries isn't an efficient way to access your travel information. And good luck if you have used your work email for some of your planning and your personal email for others. What if you are offline when you need to find your tour details? Nightmare fuel. Tripit has created a simple user experience, allowing you to forward all those endless travel planning emails to be arranged into an easily accessible itinerary in a single spot, which you can access from any of your devices.

Other features of this include the ability to load PDFs, QR codes, and other travel documents to your Tripit travel folder. There are helpful navigation tools, like airport maps, neighborhood safety ratings, and nearby places. You can share your travel plans and sync them to your calendar. For $49 a year (or a free 30-day trial) you can upgrade to Tripit Pro for enhanced travel aid, including notifications to help keep you on track and on time. 

Tripit is free to download from the App Store and from Google Play, and you can upgrade to the premium Tripit Pro on the Tripit website or in the app.

Mobile Passport Control

The latest app from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol goes by the wildly creative name, " Mobile Passport Control ." It's a no-nonsense app with a no-nonsense name that allows users to streamline the customs experience. Rather than filling out declarations forms, users enter their information into the app and send it to border officials so they can access it as soon as they get to customs. You can do this immediately upon arrival, say as your plane is taxiing to the gate.

The app is for United States citizens and Canadians with a B-1 or B-2 visitor visa who are entering the USA at one of 33 American airports, 11 preclearance sites, and four seaports. It works in tandem with your passport, but it doesn't replace it.

As a bonus, some sites allow those with the Mobile Passport Control app to use their own (almost always shorter!) line or expedited Global Entry lines at passport control. You can enter family members on the same app and there is no approval process, just download and go.

A previous iteration of the app had a premium, paid version, but this is no longer the case. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play.
