Cruise Operator Viking Makes Strong NYSE Debut

Shares of Viking Holdings rose 9% in their debut on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday, giving the travel and cruising company a valuation of $11 billion.

Viking opened at $26.15 compared with its initial public offering (IPO) price of $24 in a stellar debut, amid a rebound in stock market listings and at a time when cruise stocks have delivered outsized returns.

Founded in 1997, Viking provides destination-focused itineraries including a shore excursion at every port and an onboard and onshore program through performances of music and art, cooking demonstrations, port talks and guest lectures.

"We have been able to gain ground in bad times, and COVID was not an exception," said Torstein Hagen, Viking’s Chairman and CEO, adding that by 2022 they were back to pre-pandemic levels, which accelerated in 2023, forming the basis for the IPO.

Demand for cruise vacations has been on a record resurgence since COVID subsided and this year appears to be a banner year.

The projected market demand for luxury cruises is expected to increase approximately 75% from 2019 to 2025, according to data from Cruise Line International Association (CLIA).

Travelers are also opting for more sea-based experiences over expensive land holidays, which has given operators ample room to hike ticket prices, as they look to narrow the pricing gap.

Leading publicly traded cruise operators like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line who also manage their own luxury brands have been less impacted by inflation.

Shares of Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian have risen about 102%, 51% and 16%, respectively, over the past year.

Viking joins a list of companies including Reddit, Loar Holdings and Rubrik that have seen remarkable debuts recently.

Lower borrowing costs, strong company performance and an ebullient market have prompted investors to turn to capital markets after a two-year hiatus in IPO in the United States.

Viking along with some of its existing investors sold 64 million shares at $24 apiece, within its targeted range, to raise $1.54 billion in its IPO.

The company, backed by private equity firm TPG TPG.O and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, reported 2023 revenue at $4.71 billion compared with $3.18 billion a year earlier.

Net loss in the same period was $1.86 billion, versus a profit of $398.5 million in 2022, while adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) grew nearly three-fold.

Job description.

We are seeking Personal Vacation Planner (PVP) to be part of our team. Currently considering residents from ONLY from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas .

As a remote PVP, you'll be the face of Carnival Cruise Line, making outbound calls to potential customers, building strong relationships, and converting leads into unforgettable cruise experiences. You'll have the freedom to work independently, meet monthly targets, and create memorable moments for our guests.  Don't miss your chance to be part of something extraordinary! Whether you're a seasoned sales expert or just starting out, our team is ready to welcome you aboard.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Excellent attendance and punctuality are an essential function of the job.
• Promote cruise sales by initiating telephone calls, acting on leads and/or prospects. Present cruise products and make travel recommendations.
• Establish and maintain customer relationships by delivering excellent customer service, meeting customer needs and expectations to meet/exceed sales goals.
• Maintain customer contact database of new and existing accounts to close sales.
• Participate in mandatory trainings and meetings to stay current with knowledge of products to present cruise product features, benefits, and pricing.
• Perform other job-related functions as assigned.
• Must have the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. 

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: .

• Currently considering residents from ONLY from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas. 
• Minimum High School Diploma  or  GED.
• Inside / outside field 1 year sales experience with proven sales success.
• Experience developing new business and new accounts with a customer service background.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Results and goal-oriented sales professional with excellent verbal and written communication skills sufficient to successfully communicate with customers via telephone.
• Superior prospecting, presentation and closing skills.
• Comfort working in an environment requiring achievement of monthly sales targets and goals.
• Effective time management, organization, and multi-tasking skills.

• Good problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and maintain individual lead database.

• Monday through Friday 09:00 AM - 06:00 PM (EST).

• Since this is an incentive-driven position, when business needs dictate, PVPs may be required to work the last Saturday of a month. 
• The starting hourly pay rate for this role is $15/hour for the first 5 pay periods. For pay periods 6 through 10, the rate is *$11/hour plus participation in the sales incentive program.  From the 11th pay period onward, the annual base salary will be $16,500 with continued participation in the sales incentive program. The sales incentive program is tiered and includes a 6-month incentive guarantee. Average annual earning for this role is $65,000 - $70,000 with high performers earning $100,000+.

Viking Holdings jumps 10% above its IPO pricing level in opening trading

Viking Holdings Ltd ( NYSE: VIK ) opened for trading at $26.15 after the company's IPO was priced at $24 per share. In the first few minutes of trading, the stock swapped hands as high as $26.83. The current valuation on Viking Holdings ( VIK ) is $11.3B, compared to the market caps of $18.6B for Carnival ( CCL ), $8.12B for Norwegian Cruise Line ( NCLH ), and $35.9B for Royal Caribbean ( RCL ).

The cruise liner operator disclosed in an SEC filing that in 2023 it reported a loss of $1.85B on $4.7B in revenue as cruise operating expenses increased by 33% to $2.85B. Adjusted EBITDA loss widened to $1.09B from $367M in 2022 and the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 35.5% from 18.4% the year prior. As of December 31, Viking ( VIK ) had $1.3B in cash, $11.4B in total liabilities, and free cash flow of -$673 for the preceding 12-month period. Viking ( VIK ) started in 1997 with just 4 river cruise ships but has expanded to 84 ships in operation with 650K passengers in 2023.

The IPO is generating some positive buzz from investors due to the niche aspect of the company's business. Notably, Viking ( VIK ) caters to older cruise line customers looking for a quieter, high-end experience. Viking cruises do not allow children under 18 and have no casinos. Instead of promoting a party atmosphere, Viking proclaims to be a global leader in experiential travel by exploring all seven continents, all five oceans, and more than 20 iconic rivers. Crucially, Viking said its single-brand focus has helped with customer retention.

In Viking's F-1 SEC filing, the company also noted that demographics are working in its favor.

"The U.S. population aged 55 years and older comprises 30% of the total population, has the largest spending power of any demographic based on annual expenditures and holds over 70% of U.S. wealth as measured by the U.S. Federal Reserve. The U.S. population aged 55 years and older is also the fastest growing segment of the population, with expected growth from 98 million people in 2020 to 110 million people in 2030, according to the Congressional Budget Office."
