Sightseeing:
Naples (Napoli, Campania) is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. It has a great bay with nice views of the Capri and the Ischia Islands. The city is maybe not so delightful as Rome or Florence, but it deserves a place among the destinations a tourist should not miss in Italy.
You will be surprised how easily you can get around by foot, too. Interesting spots are almost on every corner and most distances – especially in the (historic) centre – are small and can be walked in a matter of minutes.
Naples can be a little "rough" around the edges at times! Watch your belongings, pickpockets are really professional here.
Tours Excursions Transportation:
Hop-on Hop-off buses in Naples. Their pickup point is only a 5 minute walk from the cruise terminal to the left site of the Castel Nuovo. Some busses have no cover on top, so dress accordingly.
It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .
You can take the train to Ercolano, Pompeii and Sorrento. You can also take SITA bus 5001 in front of the terminal to get to Pompei. A 45 minute trip.
A 40 minute boat trip to Sorrento by fast ferries from Beverello (The ferry teminal only 100 meters from where the cruise ships dock) is 12.30 Euro one way. The bus to get you in the center of Sorrento is 1 Euro. Than you can take the train, 1 hour trip , close by (very frequent departures) back to Naples for 4.10 Euro, which also makes a stop at Pompeii. From Napels Garibaldi station take the bus (watch your belongings!!) or take a taxi back to port.
A new metro station opened in 2015 near the cruise terminal, giving good connections to the main train station and the National Museum. Tickets are Euro 1.50, good for an hour. Every 10 minutes. Get off at the Piazza Garibaldi station at Stazione Centrale di Napoli.
Nearby Places:
Pompeii (open daily from 8:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.) is the most important historic site in this part of Italy; at one time (a long, long time ago) it was a prosperous city with 20,000 residents. The eruption of Vesuvius in A.D. 79 buried the town for some 1,700-plus years. It was rediscovered in the mid-18th century as a result of excavations, and visitors can now wander the streets of this ancient, doomed city.
Vesuvius It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. The two other volcanoes in Italy (Etna and Stromboli) are located on islands. Vesuvius is on the coast of the Bay of Naples, about nine kilometers (six miles) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is conspicuous in the beautiful landscape presented by the Bay of Naples, when seen from the sea, with Naples in the foreground
Capri , Ischia and Sorrento are just a short boat ride away. The ferries to Capri are next to your cruise ship. Some are slow (75 minutes) and some are very fast (hydrofoils 40 minutes) The small Italian island of Capri is situated 5 km from the mainland in the Bay of Naples, a celebrated beauty spot and coastal resort since the days of the Roman Republic until now. Shopping and Food
Shopping in Naples is a favorite pastime. The city's retail hub is a relatively easy 10-minute walk from the Stazione Maritima. Head past Castel Nuovo and up to Via Chiaia, a (mostly) pedestrian street lined with shops and bars. Via Chiaia is the favorite place to shop. Left and right of here one wanders in to a myriad of small but characterful alleys and picturesque squares.
Galleria Umberto I is a large covered shopping area similar to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan.
For lunch or dinner with a view head west and stay close to the waterfront to the Via Riviera di Chiara with its many outdoor cafe's (heated on cold days).
Do not forget: Napoli=Pizza!

Communication:
There are many cafes which offer free WiFi for customers, mostly around the main railway station. Most larger cafe's offer free Wifi.
Emergency number: 112
Opening Hours and Holidays:
Most shops and businesses in Italy open from Monday to Saturday from around 8am until 1pm, and from about 4pm until 7pm, though many shops close on Saturday afternoons and Monday mornings, and in the south the day can begin and end an hour later. In the north some businesses work to a 9am-5pm day to facilitate international dealings. Traditionally, everything except bars and restaurants closes on Sunday, though most towns have a pasticceria open in the mornings, while in large cities and tourist areas, Sunday opening is becoming more common.

Cruises from/to Naples, Italy
Naples, italy cruise port.
Cruise to Naples and enjoy the divine pizza pie, perhaps the city’s most enduring symbol. The city even has regulations for the ingredients used in a Neapolitan pizza. Another Italian classic that is strongly associated with Naples is spaghetti with ragu. Of course, you have to leave room for dessert when you’re in Italy, and Naples has got you covered there with gelato and zeppole, a custard-filled doughnut. As delicious as these dishes are, Naples offers much more than food. Cruise to Naples, Italy and take in the sites, all of which reflect different periods of the city’s history, which is rich with grand culture and beautiful buildings.Featured below are a few of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Naples, Italy:
- Dive into history at the underwater Archaeological Park of Baiae, which is in the Gulf of Naples. These are the ruins of a submerged city of Pozzuolli.
- Explore the Sacristy of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta at the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro. Here you’ll see beautiful art and treasures.
- You can’t go to Naples and not eat at Pizzeria Brandi where the margherita pizza was first created.
- Visit Villa Floridiana, which houses the National Museum of Ceramics. This gallery has all sorts of treasures from China’s Ming dynasty and majolica pottery from the Renaissance era. This spot also offers great views of Naples and the isle of Capri.
- Take a ferry to the isle of Capri where you can take an enchanting canoe ride through the Blue Grotto, a sea cave that has an illuminatingly blue color.

Naples, Italy – Cruise Port Guide
What to do in Eight Hours ashore… NAPLES, Italy – a Cruise Port Guide…
Naples, in the region of Campagnia, Italy, is an almost perfect port to visit on your cruise. The unmistakable shape of Vesuvius is first thing you see, sitting on the horizon as you enter the Bay of Naples. Your ship will berth at the deep water harbour of the Stazione Marittima which is close to town, the Metro, railway and to local ferries, right next to Castel Nuovo and the Piazza dal Municipo.
Naples is a love it or hate it destination! I really like the little back streets and cafes, the museums, galleries and churches, I even quite like the ubiquitous scooters and graffiti and am quite happy wandering the main parts of the city but I do accept that it has a bit of a seedy side and that you really shouldn’t wander too far off the beaten track, especially on your own. There is a lot of talk on cruise forums about bag snatching and pickpocketing but I’m not sure that it is any worse than in many other cities, certainly a bit of common sense it needed but it is not a dangerous city in any real sense although it is true that the Camorra ( Naples mafia) are still active behind the secenes.
To me Naples is an almost perfect port to visit on your cruise, there is just so much to see and do that it will definitely take more than one or two visits to see it all. The unmistakable shape of Vesuvius appears on the horizon as you enter the Bay of Naples and headfor your berth at the deep water harbour of the Stazione Marittima, right next to Castel Nuovo and the Piazza dal Municipo. Here you are close to town, the Metro, railway and to local ferries.
This Port Profile is on the city Naples itself…there is much more to see if you travel out of town; Vesuvius, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento, Capri and Ischia just to name a few – but there is a lot to see in Naples without getting on a coach, train or ferry.
Naples was founded by the Greeks in about 10BC and became part of the Roman Empire in about 4BC. The eruption of Vesuvius in AD79 was visible from Naples and there is a written description of the event by the Roman writer Pliny, who was watching it from the town of Misenum, (now Miseno) just further around the bay of Naples to the west. The town of Herculaneum, directly beneath the volcano, was buried under a sea of lava and mud. The town of Pompeii which was further to the east missed the lava but was hit by a cloud of poisonous gas know as a pyroclastic surge which killed everyone in the town and buried it beneath a thick layer of cinders and ash, preserving it for us to visit today!
Following the fall of the Roman Empire, Naples came under Byzantine rule during which time it flourished. In the years that followed it became part of the Norman kingdom of Sicily and then part of the Angevin kingdom, of which it was the capital city. By 1503 the Spanish had taken control of the town which grew to be the largest city in Italy. Naples was modernised by the Bourbon King Charles III in the 18th century, his ambitious programme of buildings included a Royal Place at Caserta which he based on the palace of Versailles, and the town became an important stop of the ‘Grand’ Tour’ of Europe made by the wealthy and educated of the day.
In 1860 Naples became part of Garibaldi’s new ‘Unified Italy’ and was a popular desination for musicians artists, architects and playwrights such as Oscar Wilde. You can see the influences of this Art Nuevo period in Piazza Dante and around town but more obvious is the Monumental Fascist architecture, particularly in some of the town major institutions such as the the bank of Naples, the post office and the Stazione Marittima where your ship is berthed. The majority of 1930s architecture was destroyed in WW2 and post war rebuilding was haphazard at best, directed more for their own financial gain by local politicians than with any sense of regeneration or restoration.
Today Naples is a vibrant and creative city, full of music and song, which celebrates its history whilst looking towards the future. You will find modern art installations such as the Salt Mountain in Piazza del Plebiscito in close proximity to the historical Angovese Castel Nuovo, built in 1279, which is right by the entrance to todays port.
The Cruise Terminal is bright and airy, it has all the usual things including some shops and a small pharmacy, from here it is an easy walk into town. It is easy to explore out from Naples either on organised tours or by yourself on trains or ferries. It is possible to hire a car from just outside the Terminal but unless you are completely happy driving in Europe I would probably avoid the appalling Naples traffic. The ferry terminal (Molo Beverello) is closer to the cruise terminal then any of the rental car offices and, if you want to travel out of town say to Ischia, Capri or Sorrento, a ferry is probably more fun!
There is also a HOHO bus in town if that appeals, there are two intersecting loops that visit many of the main sights such as Museo dell’Opera Duomo, Basilica of Santa Croce, Palazzo Pitti and Teatro Verdi but it travels well out of town to Posillipo and does not go up to Monte Santo, or into the centre of the old town Naples so I would take a look at the map and decide if it is for you. Personally I think you will see more of the city with a combination of walking, buses and the Funicular Railways.
The Funicular system of trains taking people up to Monte Santo and Chaia (as celebrated in the Neapolitan song Funiculi, Funicular ) was built in 1875 and is one of the real symbols of the city along with Pulcinella (a masked performer that has echoes of the plague doctors of Venice, but whose function to to make people laugh), the hand carved wood Nativity ( Naples is home to workshops that make beautiful hand carved Nativities that are popular all over Italy) and of course pizza, which was invented here in the 18th Century ( apparently in pretty much any restaurant you care to ask!).
Within easy flat walking of the port is Castel Nuevo with its stunning renaissance arched entrance, the 16th century Palazzo Reale and stables, the San Francesco di Paola Church, the Teatro San Carlo, the oldest opera house in Europe Galleria and Galleria Umberto I – a large iron and glass covered shopping area similar to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan.Exit from the Galleria onto the main street in Naples, Via Toledo.
If you head north you will reach the older area of the city. If you turn right onto Via Capitelli you will be in the Spaccanapoli, a long straight street with various names along its way dating from Roman times that cuts right across the city. It is lined with churches, Palazzos and squares, any or all of which are worth a short visit and walking the shady, deep street is also brief respite from the heat!
There are some wonderful sculptures in Naples, but two in particular, Veiled Christ by Sanmartino and Modesty by Corradini can be found in the tiny Capella Sansevero just north of Spaccanapoli on Via San dom Maggiore. If you are interested in sculpture then head a bit further north to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale where they have a wonderful collection including the Farnese Bull, the largest group sculpture to have survived from 200BC, and the Farnese Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, there are also some absolutely stunning artefacts and mosaics from Pompeii (especially the recreated Temple of Isis) and many other treasures from the collection built up by the Medici family during the Renaissance.
Between Spaccanapoli and the Museum you will cross another straight Roman street, the Via dei Tribunali, also lined with shops as well as ancient monasteries, churches and the 13th century Duomo (cathedral) which was built incorporating much older buildings on the site including the mosaic decorated Baptistry which dates from AD550. Next to another church, San Paolo Maggiore, you will find the entrance to one of Naples’ less well known features, the Napoli Sotterranea, a huge network of underground passages, catacombs and aqueducts which are only open for visits on Saturdays and Sundays; dating from Roman times and extended over the centuries they were used in WW2 as shelters during the bombing and many are still used today as interconnecting storage areas and cellars beneath the city.
You can also access underground Naples in other places, for example the catacombs beneath San Severo & San Gennaro churches, and if such things interest you, you could also visit the Cimitero delle fontanelle where there is a fairly gruesome underground ossuary. All of these attractions are slightly further north of the city as is the lovely Capodimonte Park and Museum.
This was built as a palace by Charles III to house the Medici collections that belonged to his mother Elizabeth Farnese, it is surrounded by a small park where Charles liked to hunt. This is also where he introduced porcelain manufacture into Italy , the resulting Capodimonte china figures becoming as famous as the Meissen china it was founded to copy. The Queens Parlour in the museum is tiled with nearly 300 tiles of fine porcelain. The whole area is good place to escape from town for a little while on a hot sunny day!
The same is true of Monte Santo which is accessed by the original funicular railway. A short trip to the top is fun to do and you will find the towns Maritime Museum, housed in old monastery with beautiful views out over the Bay of Naples and the port.
Your will find designer shops in Galleria Umberto 1 and some nice pedestrian shopping areas and pizzerias around Via dei Tribunali. There are street markets on Corso Umberto by the Garibaldi Train Station and Via Chiaia is a pedestrianised street with lots of boutiques. Do not miss the Neapolitan Christmas shops with their famous Nativity scenes – they are mainly found on Spaccanopoli.
The 1950s style Naples of the Elena Farrantes books is still to be found in the Luzatti area and on the island of Ischia where you may well fall across a TV crew filming her new adaptation of My Brilliant Friend for HBO! If you are a fan of the books you might like to try lookingforlila.com or en.platypustour.it to organise a themed tour. On the subject of books the pizzeria that featured in the film of the book ‘Eat, pray, love’ is Da Michele on Via Sersale, 13 – it only serves margherita or marinara pizza but you can’t go to Naples without trying a traditional neapolitan, margherita pizza! It is made with a thin, hand kneaded crust and buffalo milk mozarella cooked quickly in a hot oven.
Traditional pizzerias like Da Michele and Di Matteo on Via dei Tribunali, 94 have very sparse interiors with small plastic cups for your drink but very cheap prices for a pizza. It’s an experience…
Naples is a port that features on many Mediterranean itineraries so you will probably find yourself there more than once. Although Pompeii, Vesuvius and Capri are the more obvious trips I highly recommend that you spend a day in the town at some point, Naples is a special place that deserves a little exploring!

Best Things to Do in a Day in Naples
My return visit to Naples was part of a Western Mediterranean cruise on NCL Epic . As this is an easy and destination-rich itinerary, it is a good choice for the first-time cruiser .
The itinerary started and finished in the Catalan city of Barcelona , giving me a welcome opportunity to check the progress of La Sagrada Família . Other highlights included the honey-hued Palma de Mallorca , Civitavecchia (for Rome) and visiting the marble quarries at Carrara .
Naples was the easiest port of call to explore independently. Its historic city centre is only a ten-minute stroll from the port and as its main attractions are close to one another, it’s very walkable. But, if needed, I’ve included tips for using the metro in Naples later in this article ( here ).
If you are someone who likes to map it out, here’s one that I have prepared. For a live, interactive map, click on this link or on the image.
Visit Castel Nuovo
Start your day in Naples at Castel Nuovo . This enormous military castle looms over the harbour and has eccentric round towers. Built by Charles of Anjou in 1279, most of what you see today is the work of the Catalan architect Guillermo Sagrara who was also responsible for the Exchange in Palma de Mallorca .
The castle’s main entrance is an intricately carved 15th-century white marble triumphal arch, tucked between two of its towers. Inside, there are frescoes by Giotto in the Cappella Palatina and a collection of artwork by Neapolitan painters from the 17th to early 20th Centuries.
Address: Via Vittorio Emanuele III
Opening hours: Monday to Saturday: 8:30 am to 6.30 pm. You can choose one of seven timed entrance slots. More information here .
Stop for a coffee in Galleria Umberto I
This light-filled shopping arcade was built at the end of the 19th century as part of a project to rebuild and renovate much of Naples. Crowned with a domed glass and steel roof, and decorated with elegant murals and sculptures, the Galleria Umberto is part of the UNESCO listing of the Historic Centre of Naples as a World Heritage Site.
Admire Piazza del Plebiscito
After languishing as a car park between the 1960s and 1994, this immense and elegant square has been restored to its former splendour.
Piazza del Plebiscito was built from volcanic rock from Vesuvius in the first half of the 19 th Century. It is named after the 1860 plebiscite that brought Naples into the unified Kingdom of Italy.
The square is flanked by two majestic buildings.
Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace), one of four royal residences around Naples used by the Bourbon Kings, occupies its southern edge. Facing the Palazzo Reale, Basilica San Francesco di Paola embraces the piazza with its curving colonnades.
Stroll the streets of the historic centre of Naples
A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, the historic centre of Naples ( centro storico ) is a warren of old churches, small shops, cafes, and bars. Naples was founded by Greek settlers in 470 B.C. and has retained the imprint of the successive cultures that occupied the city.
The historic centre is roughly bounded by the waterfront on the south, Via Toledo and the Spanish Quarter to its western edge and Via Floria on the northern edge. For tourists, Via Duomo marks its eastern side.
Spaccanapoli , meaning ‘Split Naples’ does exactly that. Lined with grocery barrows and one-of-a-kind shops, and inhabited by arch-Neapolitan characters, this is the heart of old Naples.
Don’t miss Via San Gregorio Armeno , which is tucked between Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali. This charming lane is known across Italy for its artisan shops selling handcrafted pastori , or nativity-scene figurines.
Go underground at Galleria Borbonica
Naples is a city with buried secrets. Tunnels, caves, and catacombs lace their way under the city, and I recommend going underground at least once during your day in Naples.
Galleria Borbonica (Bourbon Gallery or Bourbon Tunnel) has a fascinating history.
It housed immense water tanks in the 1600s and served as an escape for the Bourbon royal family. It was an air-raid shelter during World War II and an impound lot.
A section of the tunnel is a Vespa graveyard, populated with confiscated souped-up scooters that have exceeded the 50km/hour speed limit.

Visit Naples Cathedral
Naples is home to more than 450 churches but the most important is Naples Cathedral. The cathedral is dedicated to San Gennaro, the patron saint of the city, and is variously known as the Duomo di Napoli, Duomo di San Gennaro and the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral.
It was built in the 13th Century on the remains of the ancient temple dedicated to the god Apollo. In the late 17th century it was reworked in flamboyant Baroque fashion with the later addition of a late nineteenth-century Neo-Gothic façade.
With a golden Byzantine mosaic and frescoes galore, the best stuff is on the inside. But most importantly, the cathedral is the home of the skull of San Gennaro and an ampoule that encloses his blood.
It is said that the saint’s blood liquefies twice a year. If the miracle of liquefaction doesn’t occur, misfortune will strike the town.
Address: Via Duomo, 147
Opening hours : Check here . Usually closed between lunchtime and late afternoon.
Closest metro stations: Metro Line 1 University / Metro Line 2 Cavour
Other churches in Naples
Two other churches worth adding to your one-day Naples itinerary are San Lorenzo Maggiore Basilica and San Domenico Maggiore Church. Located in the exact geographical centre of historic Naples, San Lorenzo Maggiore Basilica is famous for the remains of an ancient two-storey Greco-Roman market beneath its floors. Visit San Domenico Maggiore Church for its lavishly decorated interior featuring intricate gold details and a dramatic altar.
Get your history fix at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples
Naples National Archaeological Museum (MANN) is one of the great museums of the world.
Starting life as an army barracks in the 16th Century, it was converted into a museum in the 19th Century. This massive museum is spread across four floors and is home to an extensive collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, as well as artefacts from Ancient Egypt.
Visiting MANN is one of the best things to do in Naples if you are planning to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum. Valuable treasures from these two sites are displayed here, giving you greater insight into daily life in Pompeii and Herculaneum .
The museum’s other highlight is the Farnese Collection . This collection of classic sculptures and objects from the villas of ancient Rome is one of the world’s most important Greco-Roman exhibitions.
Address : Piazza Museo, 19
Opening hours: Wednesday to Monday 9 am to 7.30 pm. Closed on Tuesdays.
Closest metro stations: Museo or Cavour, lines 1 and 2
Admission fee: Ticket price applies. Free on the first Sunday of the month and on a few selected dates.
Admire views of Vesuvius with a walk through Santa Lucia
Walk along the Lungomare waterfront in the Santa Lucia district of Naples for views across the Bay of Naples. Mount Vesuvius looms menacingly on the other side of the water.
Santa Lucia’s fishermen were evicted following an enormous landfill project and this attractive area is now home to restaurants and some of Naples’ finest hotels.
Visit Castel dell’Ovo
At the end of the Lungomare, on the Borgo Marinaro island, is Naples’ oldest, and most picturesque, castle.
Castel dell’Ovo was built by the Normans in the 12th century. Prior to that, the site played host to the last Western Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustulus, during his exile.
Today, the castle today is used for events and temporary art exhibitions, but you can take a walk around its fortified walls for free.
There is one thing that you must do if you have just one day in Naples. Eat pizza! One of the best reasons to visit Italy is to feast on pizza and Naples is where it all began.
In 1889 King Umberto I and Queen Margherita needed a respite from their relentless diet of French Haute Cuisine. It just goes to show that you can get too much of a good thing.
Amongst the selection presented to the royal couple, the queen preferred the pizza topped with mozzarella, tomatoes and basil (coincidentally, the colours of the Italian flag).
And so Pizza Margherita was born.
L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele is reputed to make the best pizza in Naples. This is also where Julia Roberts munched on a slice of pizza in the movie Eat, Pray, Love .
The pizzeria is on Via Cesare Sersale, close to Naples Cathedral and a 20-minute walk from Naples cruise port. Expect to queue.
Guided Tours of Naples
If you don’t feel comfortable exploring Naples on your own or are looking for greater insight into the city’s history, culture and way of life, consider joining an organised walking tour.
I use GetYourGuide to source and book day excursions. Not only does the platform offer an extensive selection of tours from independent operators, but there is also a very generous cancellation policy.
Here are a few highly-rated tours related to the activities in this article:
Historic Centre of Naples Walking Tour
This 2.5-hour walking tour takes in the streets around Spaccanapoli and includes a visit to Cappella San Severo where the Veiled Christ is housed.

Naples: Street Food Tour with Local Guide
If sampling the local cuisine is more your thing, try some of the tastiest street foods in Naples as you stroll around the city’s historic centre. As you might expect, pizza is included as is a shot of limoncello and gelato.
Going Further Afield
Maybe you’ve already visited Naples and want to explore the beauty of the Amalfi Coast or the historic sites of Pompeii or Herculaneum. All of these places are easy day trips from Naples, even if you are a cruise passenger.
As with any onshore activities, always check that you will be able to make it back to the ship in plenty of time. If in doubt, book a shore excursion that guarantees to deposit you back at the port before your ship sails away.
Sorrento was the first place I visited on the Amalfi coast more than 30 years ago. Famous for its lemons and high-pedigree hotels, this laid-back town has been popular with tourists since the Grand Tours of the 19th Century.
This is the place to replenish your supplies of limoncello .
Stop for a coffee or lunch in one of the small cafes Piazza Tasso , Sorrento’s main square. Pick up gifts in the town’s famous small ceramics, lacework and marquetry (woodwork) shops.
But, best of all, take in the dramatic views over the Bay of Naples from Sorrento’s lofty clifftop location.
A ferry will take you across the Bay of Naples to Sorrento in 40 minutes. This service departs multiple times a day during the main travel season that runs from April through October.
Island of Capri
Capri is an enchaining garden of Eden with over 8,000 species of flora tumbling over a sheer chunk of limestone, eroded over time into fantastical forms.
The Blue Grotto (Grotto Azzura) is Capri’s headline act. The shimmering, iridescent blueness of the water in this sea cave is due to the reflection of light on the water in the morning.
Renowned as a playground for Roman Emperors, artists and the Hollywood glitterati, Capri’s jaw-dropping beauty comes at a hefty price. Capri town is awash with designer boutiques and jewellery shops, and the island also prides itself on its fine dining.
To reach Capri from Naples, take a high-speed hydrofoil.
The hydrofoil service operates from the Molo Beverello pier and takes about 40 minutes to get to Capri. You can check the timetable here .
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii barely needs an introduction.
Pompeii was once a cosmopolitan resort town inhabited by wealthy Romans. All this ended in 79 A.D when the town was buried under the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius.
Today’s visitors to Pompeii can stroll along the town’s ancient paved streets and view the remains of its lavish villas, elegantly bathhouses, temples and massive 20,000-seater amphitheatre.
>>> CLICK HERE TO BUY YOUR SKIP-THE-LINE TICKET WITH AUDIO GUIDE
I have been to Pompeii twice, once with a guide and once without. From my experience, this is one place where it is worth paying for a guided tour.
Pompeii’s ruins are huge and sometimes confusing with little signage. A map and guidebook are unlikely to cut it here.
>>> Visit Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius on a day tour from Naples. Click here for further information and to book.
Herculaneum
For a different perspective, visit Herculaneum, a few stops along the Circumvesuviana train line towards Naples or Sorrento.
Herculaneum suffered the same fate as Pompeii when Vesuvius erupted. However, its buildings are better preserved than those of its neighbour, many having their upper storey intact.
The tragedy of Herculaneum feels immediate.
The town’s boathouses are home to the skeletons of hundreds of people sheltering from the eruption. Whilst waiting for a boat to rescue them, their flesh was vaporised by an intense wave of hot gas, leaving only their charred bones.
Along with Pompeii, Herculaneum is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Take the Circumvesuviana or Campania Express to Ercolano Scavi, which is in the centre of town. The journey time is 10–20 minutes.
Can you visit Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum in one day?
Whilst this should be possible on a typical cruise ship schedule, it will be a long day and could feel overwhelming. Pompeii demands at least a half-day and you will need a minimum of two hours to visit Herculaneum
Getting Around Naples
Naples’ historic centre is an easy 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. Once you leave the cruise terminal, follow the passenger walkway that will take you to the Piazza del Plebiscito in the heart of the historic city centre.
Walking is the easiest way to explore Naples.
If you want to visit places that are further out or reach the city’s main railway station, your best option is line 1 of the city’s metro system , also known as the “Art Line” thanks to the works of art decorating its stops.
A single ticket is valid for 90 minutes. Day tickets offering unlimited journeys are also available.
Municipio is the closest metro station to the cruise terminal.
Naples also has a hop-on-hop-off (HOHO) bus. There is a bus stop outside the terminal, adjacent to Castel Nuovo that you’ll spot upon exiting the terminal building.
The HOHO bus follows two different routes stopping at principal sights and attractions in Naples. In the summer months, a third route takes you to the San Martino Monastery. An audio commentary is included.
Whilst this is a hassle-free way of getting around Naples, the city’s traffic is legendary and there’s every chance you will spend a chunk of your time in congested streets.
>>> CLICK HERE TO BUY YOUR HOHO BUS TICKET
Getting To and From Naples Cruise Port
From Porta Nolana
The closest railway station to Naples cruise port is Porta Nolana , a 30-minute walk northeast. If you prefer, you can take metro line 1 from Colombo station near the marina to Garibaldi – Circumvesuviana.
Otherwise, the Naples Alibus Airport Shuttle leaves from outside Stazione Marittima and stops outside Napoli Centrale station. From here, it’s a ten-minute walk to Porta Nolana.
From Garibaldi station
Alternatively, Garibaldi station, on the lower level of Naples’ main railway station, is just over two miles from the cruise terminal. To reach Garibaldi station by public transport, take the metro line 1 from Municipio station to Piazza Garibaldi, or the Naples Alibus Airport Shuttle from the port.
Circumvesuviana train service
From Naples Garibaldi or Porta Nolana, the private Circumvesuviana train service connects the city to Sorrento via Pompeii and Herculaneum, with countless stops along the way. I recommend starting your journey at Porta Nolana station as this is the terminus and you stand a better chance of getting a seat.
Fares are low and services are frequent. But as this is predominantly a commuter line, it can get crowded. Timetable here .
Campania Express
The Campania Express is a faster and more comfortable alternative to the Circumvesuviana train. However, it is a more expensive and less frequent service that runs between April and October only.
Although these trains run on the same route as the Circumvesuviana, they stop only at popular tourist sites, including Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento. Again, trains depart Naples from Napoli Porta Nolana and Garibaldi stations.
By ferry and hydrofoil
As Naples Cruise Terminal is located next to its ferry dock, it’s easy to jump on a boat across the Bay of Naples.
Is Naples Safe for Solo Cruisers?
Keeping safe is a priority for solo travellers , especially for first-time solo travellers . Over the years, Naples has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Filthy, crime-ridden, garbage-strewn; you name it, it’s been called it. And yes; petty crime is a problem in Naples, but the same can be said for many major cities. This is not a reason for avoiding a destination; you just need to keep your wits about you. Remain vigilant, keep your belongings close to you and use your hotel or cabin safe to store valuables.
Thank you for reading my Naples cruise port guide
I hope that it helps you have the best day in Naples. Even as a repeat visitor, I found that there were so many things to do that the main challenge was narrowing down the choices.

Delta Reveals New Summer 2025 Schedule, Adding More Flights to Spain, Italy, and Ireland
Summer travel planning just got easier.
NANCY PAUWELS/Getty Images
Summer travel planning just got easier. Delta Air Lines announced their summer 2025 travel schedule with new or increased service to popular destinations from Barcelona to Naples. The airline will operate its "largest-ever" summer schedule, with 700 weekly flights. Delta will begin new service to Catania, Sicily in Italy, as well as new routes to Barcelona, Dublin, Naples, Rome, the airline shared in an announcement . With a high level of passengers from the United States traveling to Italy, Delta will be increasing its seat availability by 10 percent with more weekly flights to Milan, Naples, and Rome. These will include four weekly flights from Atlanta to Naples, as well as four new weekly flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul to Rome in May 2025. The airline will also begin new service from New York's JFK Airport to Catania, Italy. Delta says they are the first-ever U.S. airline to offer direct service to this destination. The airline is also increasing flights to other spots across Europe, including three new weekly flights to Barcelona, Spain from Boston, as well as to Brussels, Belgium from Atlanta. The airline will also begin service four times a week from Detroit to Dublin, Ireland. Tickets for all of the summer flights will be available for purchase starting September 21, 2024. “We’ve also recently opened a stunning Delta One Lounge at JFK, with more to come at LAX, BOS, and SEA. Alongside the rollout of free international Wi-Fi and increased premium seating across our fleet, we’re ensuring our customers enjoy the best in connectivity and comfort from the moment they arrive at the airport to when they touch down,” Delta’s Senior Vice President of Network Planning Joe Esposito shared in a statement to Travel + Leisure. Delta's announcement comes as other airlines have begun revealing their summer travel schedule plans. For example, American Airlines recently began selling tickets for summer 2025 travel including additional routes to Rome or Madrid. British Airways also announced a revised schedule with new flights to London from Austin and Miami.
