Journey and Toto Kick Off 2022 ‘Freedom’ Tour: Set Lists, Videos

Journey kicked off their 2022 Freedom tour last night in Pittsburgh with a crowd-pleasing 19-song set largely dedicated to their biggest hits.

Neal Schon , Jonathan Cain and Arnel Pineda were joined at the packed PPG Paints Arena by recently recruited keyboardist and singer Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo and bassist Todd Jenson . There was no mention of bassist Randy Jackson or drummer Narada Michael Walden, who were announced as new band members  in 2020.

Castronovo and Jenson, who played with Schon in Hardline in the early '90s, formed a powerful rhythm section, while Castronovo delivered lead vocals on "Mother, Father." Derlatka took the vocal spotlight for two Raised on Radio tracks, "I'll Be Alright Without You" and "Girl Can't Help It."

You can see videos and set lists from the show below.

Cain, Pineda and Schon were in great form throughout the evening. The guitarist even incorporated a big chunk of "My Hometown" from HSAS' Through the Fire , his 1984 live collaboration with Sammy Hagar , into an extended version of 'Wheel in the Sky."

Watch Toto Perform 'Till the End' on 2022 Tour Opener

Journey Reintroduce Themselves to a New Generation at Lollapalooza 2021

By Nina Corcoran

Nina Corcoran

As soon as Lollapalooza’s lineup was announced this year, fans online found themselves ogling, confused, at one band in particular: Journey . Although their legendary career needed no introduction, their inclusion at this particular festival did. Lollapalooza is known to cater to underage suburbanites and 20-somethings from the Midwest. There’s a 19-year age gap between the formation of Journey and that of Modest Mouse, the next oldest band on Lollapalooza’s bill this year. Only three other acts also got their start before this century: Jimmy Eat World, Limp Bizkit, and Foo Fighters.

Two hours before their set began, Journey sold around 500 shirts at the merch table in total — a “rough” turnout according to the store manager. At the same time, Limp Bizkit was performing on the same stage immediately before them. The fact the ‘90s rap-rock band was once an unstoppable force on the charts is a mind-boggling phenomenon of its own, and yet, one could argue, they’re coming back in vogue as a sarcastic favorite among millennials following the Woodstock ’99 documentary .

So when Journey finally took the stage just after 8:00 P.M., it was a pleasant surprise to see a sizable group of fans already gathered around the stage, with hundreds more dotting the lawn on blankets. Journey proved themselves to be festival ready with “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” a single that still packs a punch nearly 40 years later and sent stragglers into a sprint to get a closer view of Neal Schon in action. Arnel Pineda, the band’s lead singer since 2007, earned audible praise from teens in the back with his festival outfit: flashy sunglasses, bleached white jeans, and a white designer sweatshirt emblazoned with a red apple bearing the Gucci logo. Journey may be old, but they presented themselves as fresh favorites onstage.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

It helps that they let Schon take the steering wheel early on. He unfurled a dozen brimful solos across their set. Watching him play, it’s obvious why Guitar Center hopefuls pass the time trying to effortlessly whip out 100-note solos; people like Schon make it look easy.

The same was true for bassist Marco Mendoza and drummer Deen Castronovo when they stole the spotlight on the gritty “La Do Da,” despite a dull call-and-response that fell flat before their respective solos. Later, older fans erupted into cheers when Journey launched into “Wheel in the Sky” where Pineda got to show off the depth of his vocal range. After turning it over to the rest of the band for a brief jam, he couldn’t help but rock out, jumping and clapping, lost in the moment of their musicianship.

As it turned out, Journey was the ideal band to do the impossible at Lollapalooza: Draw complete families to the festival on an otherwise youth-oriented lineup day. While kids at other stages were busy rapping along to Post Malone or breaking out a sweat to internet phenomenon Marc Rebillet, those watching Journey with their parents were experiencing some good old fashioned bonding time.

One couple swayed along to “Open Arms” with a toddler hoisted atop their shoulders as they rocked their youngest in a stroller, a yellow string of lights roped around its handle. Another family of four appeared to join forces with their son’s friends, who nodded along on a beach towel to “Lights” while the rest stood to watch. The opening notes of “Stone in Love” prompted their teenage daughter to throw both hands in the air, yelp in surprise, and whip around to face her mom. Without missing a beat, the two immediately leaned into one another and started singing along.

The majority of people gathered around, however, were clearly waiting for Journey to break out the hits. When Pineda asked the crowd how they were doing after the one-hour mark, a man in his 20s barked at him to play “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Instead, they bounced back with “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.” By then, thousands of younger attendees were sprawled on the ground around the stage’s perimeter, impervious and content to lounge until the two songs they wanted to post on social media popped up.

Eventually, the wait paid off. Journey sandwiched “Faithfully,” “Any Way You Want It,” and “Don’t Stop Believin’” into the final moments of their set and Pineda, who was pitch-perfect all night, never missed a note. Thousands of people seized the moment and hung onto the feeling, their voices flooding the festival grounds as they sang along and fireworks exploded above the stage.

Journey are veteran professionals when it comes to throwing entertaining concerts, and the fans upfront knew that from experience. But for the young festivalgoers and indifferent onlookers who expected a weathered band of baby boomers to twiddle their thumbs for an hour before breaking out jukebox staples, they got to experience arguably the most underrated feeling a music festival can offer: discovering a different side to an artist’s discography that you overlooked up until then.

This summer, the band headlined the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago, uniting thousands of fans across generations with their decade-spanning setlist of beloved anthems. The group also rocked Central Park with “Anyway You Want It” and “Don’t Stop Believin’” at We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert, in addition to honoring 9/11 first responders at the Tunnel to Towers concert in August. JOURNEY features founder Neal Schon (lead guitarist), Jonathan Cain (keyboards, backing vocals), Arnel Pineda (lead vocals) Jason Derlatka (keyboards, backing vocals), and Deen Castranovo (drums, backing vocals).   “It’s that time - time to get back to where we are used to being - on Stage!” says Neal Schon. “We are looking forward to shifting into high gear and bringing you the best show possible. The band is running on all 12 cylinders and very excited!  Please come and join us once again for an evening full of rocking stage connection fun. See you soon Friends.”   TOTO’s Steve Lukather shares, “'On behalf of myself and the band, we are very honored and excited to do this tour with our old and dear friends JOURNEY. Gonna be a great night of music, and as all the guys are lifelong friends... a blast off stage as well.”     ABOUT JOURNEY Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold nearly 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.   JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after founding member Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.   ABOUT TOTO Over the past several years, TOTO have had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career.  Their 40th anniversary in 2018 was marked by them releasing a brand new Greatest Hits album (40 Trips Around The Sun) and embarking on their most successful worldwide tour to date.   Few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO.  As individuals, the band members can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums.  Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with more than 200 Grammy nominations.     Collectively TOTO has over two billion streams worldwide on all streaming services.  Just last year one of their biggest hits “Africa” went from being a Platinum single to being recently recertified 6X Platinum.  The band has found a new generation of fans.  With now 40+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility.  They are pop culture, and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant while enjoying their multi-generational global fan base.

NEAL SCHON And JONATHAN CAIN Reunite On Stage At JOURNEY's First Concert Of 2023

Legendary rockers JOURNEY played their first concert of 2023 last night (Friday, January 27) in Durant, Oklahoma. The two-hour performance at the 3,000-capacity Grand Theater at the Choctaw Casino & Resort marked the band's first appearance since JOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain publicly feuded over several issues, including Neal allegedly causing over $1 million in personal expenses to be charged to the band's shared American Express card and Schon demanding that Cain stop playing events for former U.S. president Donald Trump .

JOURNEY will play a second show in Durant tonight (Saturday, January 28),before officially kicking off the main portion of its 50th-anniversary tour on February 4 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with TOTO once again on the bill.

JOURNEY 's setlist for last night's concert was as follows:

01. Only The Young 02. Stone In Love 03. Don't Stop Believin' 04. Lights 05. Send Her My Love 06. Feeling That Way 07. Anytime 08. Escape 09. Dead Or Alive 10. Who's Crying Now 11. Mother, Father' 12. Let It Rain 13. Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' 14. Open Arms 15. Faithfully 16. Girl Can't Help It 17. Wheel In The Sky 18. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) 19. Be Good To Yourself 20. Any Way You Want It

Earlier this month, Cain filed a lawsuit against Schon over the guitarist's personal expenses which were allegedly charged to the American Express card, including $400,000 in a single month last year.

Cain 's allegations come more than two months after Schon filed a lawsuit against his longtime bandmate, contending that he was being denied access to the American Express card.

In a countersuit filed in California state court, Cain said that during the first one-month billing cycle, after Schon obtained the AMEX card, Schon charged more than $50,000 in personal expenses for the billing period ending September 15, 2021. For the one-month billing period ending January 15, 2022, Schon allegedly charged more than $100,000 of his personal expenses on the AMEX card. For the one-month billing period ending February 13, 2022, Schon allegedly charged approximately $30,000 of his personal expenses on the AMEX card. For the one-month billing period ending March 16, 2022, Schon allegedly charged more than $400,000 of his personal expenses on the AMEX card. The charges allegedly included $42,000 to various PayPal accounts, over $104,000 to Chrome Hearts (jewelry and apparel),more than $31,000 to the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York City, and over $54,000 for his personal insurance premiums.

According to Cain 's lawsuit, " Schon 's charges placed considerable pressure on JOURNEY and its ability to cover normal tour expenses. Schon was spending JOURNEY 's money, and Cain is the one who was and is ultimately liable for the AMEX Account and Schon 's charges on the AMEX Card. Even with the $30,000 limit on Schon 's card on the Nomota AMEX account," referring to the company Cain and Schon set up to operate the band, " Schon still managed to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional, excessive personal expenses through other tour personnel and travel agents. For example, the budget allocated a maximum of $1,500 per night for hotel rooms for Schon and Cain . However, Schon demanded to stay in hotel suites that cost in excess of $5,000 per night. After the recent tour ended in Honolulu, Hawaii, Schon stayed an extra week in a hotel suite that cost $6,000 a night and charged more than $100,000 in expenses to the AMEX Account."

In a statement to Billboard , Schon 's attorney Skip Miller called allegations "ridiculous" and "as phony as a three dollar bill." He said the countersuit was merely "sour grapes" after a recent incident in which Schon demanded that Cain stop playing for Trump . "We want Cain to just focus on JOURNEY and its fans," Miller said.

Last month, Cain fired back at Schon when the JOURNEY guitarist called him a "hypocrite" for performing the band's 1981 hit song "Don't Stop Believin'" at Trump 's Mar-a-Lago property. Cain , whose wife, Paula White-Cain , is the former president's self-styled spiritual adviser, played the track in November with a backup chorus of U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene , Donald Trump Jr. 's fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle and former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake .

" Neal Schon should look in the mirror when he accuses me of causing harm to the JOURNEY brand," Cain said in a statement. "I have watched him damage our brand for years and am a victim of both his — and his wife's — bizarre behavior."

An attorney for Schon sent a cease-and-desist letter to Cain after he performed at Trump 's Florida estate.

The latest legal move came a few weeks after Schon filed his lawsuit against Cain . Cain , for his part, accused Schon of misusing the card, citing his "excessive spending and extravagant lifestyle."

A month earlier, former JOURNEY singer Steve Perry took legal action against both Schon and Cain , asking them to stop registering federal trademarks on the names of many of the band's hits.

Presented by AEG Presents , JOURNEY 's tour with TOTO will make stops in Austin, Montreal and Memphis before wrapping April 25 at the brand-new Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, California.

The "Freedom Tour 2023" run includes rescheduled dates in Washington, D.C., plus Hartford, Toronto and Quebec, which were postponed last year due to the coronavirus.

Robert plant and alison krauss offer up magical evening on stage outside chicago.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss perform on stage at Ravinia Festival. Wednesday, June 12, 2024 in ... [+] Highland Park, IL

“Isn’t that amazing?” asked Robert Plant rhetorically on stage Wednesday night at Ravinia Festival , about 25 miles north of Chicago in the suburb of Highland Park, Illinois. “It’s amazing the way two voices can sometimes feel like nothing I’ve ever imagined,” he continued, noting his performance alongside singer and violinist Alison Krauss . “It’s been a long, strange journey to get here… I think.”

In 2005, Plant released his eighth solo studio album Mighty ReArranger . It’s an apt title that perfectly encapsulates the solo career he’s put together since 1982, turning familiar songs on their head in the best way possible as he continues to forge ahead in one of rock’s most creative and impressive second halves.

Following the release of Raising Sand , his platinum 2005 collaboration with Krauss, the duo teamed again for 2021’s Raise the Roof , touring since.

“I am blessed,” said Plant late in Wednesday night’s performance. “I really am. I am so lucky to be in the presence of this wonderful woman and her magnificent art,” he continued, introducing Krauss.

With temperatures reaching 90 degrees on Chicago’s north shore, Plant and Krauss offered up a magical evening of live music, backed beautifully by a marvelous five piece group over the course of about an hour and a half.

Wednesday marked just the seventh show of this outing for the duo, a tour set to run through the summer, wrapping up September 1, 2024 in Vail, Colorado ahead of an October tour of Italy for Plant.

Opening act JD McPherson was on double duty Wednesday, joining Plant and Krauss on guitar throughout, stealing opening number “Rich Woman” as Plant turned left to soak it in.

A gorgeous silver backdrop backed the band with small screens flanking each side of the stage, a performance free of contemporary concert trappings which put the onus squarely on the live music being performed.

Krauss took on her first lead vocal of the evening shortly thereafter, with “The Price of Love” doubling as the first of three Everly Brothers cuts on the evening.

Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” stood as one of the better early examples of Plant’s continual desire to shake up his catalog, with the violin of multi-instrumentalist Stuart Duncan combining with Krauss to drive the song’s earliest moments. Violin largely stood in for an early guitar solo on a slightly slowed yet equally rocking take on the classic cut. Plant spread his arms wide as McPherson tore into a solo late, shimmying as he turned to face Krauss for the song’s patented late “ooh yeah’s,” kicking it up a notch with a patented late wail as the impressive take drew to a close.

From Raise the Roof , “High and Lonesome,” the album’s only Plant-penned original, sparkled, with the crowd taking it upon themselves to clap in the intro in spirited fashion.

“Last Kind Words Blue” nearly stole the show with the combination of Duncan on resonator guitar and McPherson on electric steering the ship as mandolin gurgled underneath.

Duncan functioned Wednesday night as the band’s secret weapon, moving to ukulele for “Trouble With my Lover,” as penned by legendary New Orleans songwriter Allen Toussaint. Plant picked up a pair of maracas, looking on with a smile as Krauss sang.

Flipping back his lion’s mane with both hands, Plant dove into a uniquely expressive take on his own “In the Mood,” one defined largely by the sped up dueling fiddle work of Duncan and Krauss while McPherson supplied a lilting backing groove.

Banter was at a minimum Wednesday night but Plant did pause for a moment following a rollicking, spirited take on “Gallows Pole” that brought the Ravinia crowd to its feet in organic fashion with several numbers yet to go prior to the group’s encore.

“Many years ago, I said something like ‘it feels really good up here,’” said Plant, taking stock of his surroundings upon his return to the unique outdoor venue. “But it really does. This is one of the best interludes of my life,” he said, soon introducing each band member. “Please, folks, welcome over here - you know who he is - Robert Plant, everybody!” said Krauss gesturing left.

While rock solid throughout, Wednesday’s show really began to hit its stride late, with Zeppelin’s “The Battle of Evermore,” featuring electric mandolin, giving way to “When the Levee Breaks.”

Radically reworking the otherwise familiar number, Plant looked pleased, nodding to his right while smiling and clapping, enthralled by the sound as the band sped up the cut, with McPherson’s tremolo-soaked guitar wailing on the song in a whole new way. Waiting patiently, hands on hips, Plant finally delivered the song’s penultimate lyric, as the crowd roared in approval: “Going to Chicago!”

“Thanks for Champaign, Illinois!” said Plant, referencing the hometown of Krauss, just about three hours south. “So much fun. We’ll see ya. Somewhere,” he said following the group’s closing take on the Everlys’ “Gone Gone Gone.”

Putting a 50s spin upon Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life,” McPherson shouted out longtime Chicago adult alternative station WXRT, what he called the first station in the country to spin his breakout 2010 hit “North Side Gal.”

“Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. This is year three for us out with Robert,” said the singer and guitarist, during his opening performance setting up a reverb-drenched take on “On the Lips.” “It’s quite a show!”

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 13: (L-R) Mike Mills, Michael Stipe, Bill Berry and Peter Buck, of R.E.M., perform onstage during the 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Gala at New York Marriott Marquis Hotel on June 13, 2024 in New York City. The four founding members of R.E.M. performed together publicly for the first time in nearly three decades at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Ceremony in New York on Thursday night, playing an acoustic version of their breakthrough song, 1991’s “Losing My Religion.”

With characteristic understatement, the group — singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry — showed their respect for the honor and the institution, their friendship and decades-long bond, and in gracious terms, fans, family, friends, and everyone who helped them along the way.

Although the four members performed together in 2016 at a private event for longtime manager Bertis Downs, their last major concert took place in 1995, concluding a problem-plagued tour that ultimately led to Berry’s departure two years later. The remaining three members last performed in 2008 and amicably split in 2011.

The group’s fellow 2024 inductees were Steely Dan, producer Timbaland, and songwriters Hillary Lindsey, Dean Pitchford and the late Cindy Walker.

Following the format of the show — which sees one of the songwriter’s hits played by an influencee, followed by the induction and then the honoree’s performance — Jason Isbell started R.E.M.’s segment by playing the group’s polysyllabic 1987 hit, “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine).”

“I never sang so many syllables so fast in my life,” Isbell joked, recalling memorizing the song’s tongue-twisting lyrics as a kid — and how he’d thought that feat would never be useful.

“I heard their songs on the radio all time, and it’s safe to say thousands of outcast kids in the South had that same experience.”

After fans, families and several dozen music executives by name, Stipe concluded with a heartfelt tribute to the band’s longtime manager, Bertis Downs: “for allowing us the space to create, to follow our gut, to follow our instincts, to disappear into the music, to not have to be concerned with aspects of the industry that would have or could have prevented us from focusing on the most important part: the songwriting and the songs. And for that gift, Bertis we are forever grateful.”

The band then walked over to the performance area. “We’re R.E.M., and this is what we did,” Stipe said and the bandmembers — Stipe with guitarist Peter Buck on mandolin, bassist Mike Mills playing 12-string acoustic guitar and singing harmony, and drummer Bill Berry, who left the band in 1997, on percussion.

Their appearance was brief, but no one was disappointed.
