An Insight into Khajjiar Tourism

The story behind how Khajjiar came to be known as the “mini Switzerland” of India is an interesting one. It was Mr. Willy T. Blazer, Vice Counsellor and Head of Chancery of Switzerland, who first called it so. He was so enamoured of its landscape that he placed a sign board of a yellow Swiss hiking footpath which showed the distance from Bernes, the capital of Switzerland, to Khajjiar - 6194 km. Even though this happened back in 1992, the attraction of the place has not diminished even a bit.

Khajjiar is a small hill station located in Chamba district, and is a famous tourist attraction in Himachal Pradesh. You should visit this quaint and dreamy place to simply celebrate its existence. Just walk wherever you want, breathe freely, feel the touch of the soft grass or walk as far as your legs take you. Most of the people who visit it are attracted by its landscape, and enjoy nothing better than just feasting their eyes to this wonderful panorama laid out by nature.

Khajjiar is incomplete without its lake, which is known as Khajjiar Lake . It stands right in the middle of the meadows that are surrounded by thick cedar forests. The lake is beautiful by itself, and plays a large part in contributing to the overall beauty of the area. The lake hosts a floating island. Upon closer look, you discover that it’s a patch of grass which floats continuously on the surface.

Other ways of spending time at the lake are horseback riding and zorbing. You can also enjoy spectacular views of Mt. Kailash from the lake. If you are a trekking enthusiast, you will have a lot to look forward to at Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary . The landscape here is marked by dense coniferous forests and crisscrossed by several streams, both of which create the right conditions for trekking and nature walks. Major wildlife attractions in the sanctuary are Himalayan black marten, barking goral, leopard, jackal, langur and bear.

Khajji Nag Temple is another tourist attraction to visit in Khajjiar. Besides being a religious structure, it is also a historic one, as it was built during the 12th century. Located on the banks of the lake, it is dedicated to the Lord of the Serpents. Its architecture shows a wonderful fusion of Hindu and Muslim styles. Inside, there are images of Lord Shiva, Goddess Hadimba, Pandavas and Kauravas.

Those dense forests that encircle the meadows at Khajjiar are home to some lovely villages. Two of these are Rota and Ladi. Both of these villages are famous for their apple orchards and the amazing views they offer of the snow-covered hills and Mt. Kailash.

Khajjiar Lake is placed in Khajjiar, Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. About Khajjiar

The rolling meadows, the mysterious looking alpine forests and the snow-capped peaks in the distance make Khajjiar picture perfect but ‘picture-perfect’ can never compere to the ‘perfect’ you have in your memory when you have been to that place and this tiny town, in the gorgeous district of Chamba, is really a place you cannot get out of your mind. With its magical folds of meadows and alluring alpine beauty, it is commonly referred to as Mini Switzerland and is also the most favored picnic spot near Dalhousie.

The prime attraction in this beautiful town is a small glacial spring, the Khajjiar Lake, studded in the middle of a brilliantly lush saucer shaped meadow of the Khajjiar, which in turn is fringed by the taller darker woods of deodar trees and pine forests and rugged mountains surrounding them. It is beautifully bordered by thick weeds with the banks covered by a blanket of earth. Much of the sparkling lake has now turned to muddy slush, but that has not diminished the beauty of the spot.Legend goes that nobody knows the depth of this pond and long back, a hermit died trying to find out. It doesn’t look too deep to me but who’s to know?

There are the Dhauladhar Mountains for the hikers or simply the nature-gazers. There’s something hypnotic about these hills. You gaze at them once and you just don’t seem to be able to turn your eyes from them. There’s also a lovely hill temple located at a small distance away from the lake. The presiding Lord is Khajji Nag. It is a very old temple. Its date can be traced back to the 12th century. One can see depictions of the Panch-Pandav and the Kauravas on the roof of the path. It’s a typical Himachali wood cut structure. It’s interesting to see the snake idols housed within here. This place is so heart-breakingly gorgeous.

Dalhousie to Khajjiar to distance is only 25 kilometers and you can take a bus, shared taxi or a private cab to come here. Best time to visit Khajjiar is in winters when snowfall has happened recently. Khajjiar is quite a popular honeymoon destination in North India. Staying in a wooden cottage would be an amazing experience. Various accommodation like hotels, resorts, campstays and home stays are also available. 

Willy T Blazer, the Vice Counsellor and head of Swiss Chancery in India installed a signboard of a Swiss hiking footpath here showing the Switzerland’s distance of 6194 Kms from the spot. Its counterpart, a stone taken from Khajjiar is a part of a stone collage near the Swiss Parliament to indicate the close resemblance between Switzerland and India. You really do want to come see India’s ‘Mini Switzerland’, don’t you?

Khajjiar can be visited throughout the year except perhaps during monsoon season when weather is still good but quite rainy. Khajjiar is well connected to cities like Pathankot and Chandigarh by road. Overnight Bus or private car is the best way to reach Khajjiar from Delhi. If you want to visit Khajjiar by flight then the closest airport is Gaggal Airport also known as Kangra Airport. Frequent buses run for Khajjiar from Shimla. 

Lot of hiking trails are present near Khajjiar. You can go on a trek near Khajjiar through meadows and forests of Deodar and Pine trees but make sure you take a guide along with you.

A small picturesque saucer-shaped plateau surrounded by dense pine and deodar forests, is one of the 160 places throughout the world to have been designated “Mini Switzerland”. Yes, this is Khajjiar, a tiny tourist resort in Chamba about 24 kms from Dalhousie; at an altitude of 6,500 ft. above sea level. The moment one enters the picturesque Khajjiar, one is welcomed by a yellow Swiss sign for ‘hiking path’ which reads “Mini Switzerland”.

Set against the backdrop of dense pines, deodars and lush green meadow, Khajjiar is exquisitely nestled down in the foothills of the imposing Dhauladhar ranges of the Western Himalayas. The dish-shaped Khajjiar provides a panoramic and breathtaking perspective to visitors.

Khajjiar was officially baptized by the Swiss Ambassador on July 7, 1992 and as per records, a stone was taken here and forms part of the stone sculpture erected in Berne, capital of Switzerland.

The journey from Chamba to Dalhousie to this idyllic scenic spot may be undertaken either by buses run by the HP Tourism Development Corporation or by one’s own vehicle. Khajjiar is about 95kms from Pathankot Railway Station and 130 kms from the Gaggal Airport in the district Kangra.

Khajjiar is famous for the popular Khajji Naga shrine dedicated to the serpent god from which the name is believed to have been derived. The temple dates back to the 10th century and is interspaced with different patterns and images on the ceiling and wooden posts. A curious blend of Hindu and Mughal styles of architecture is reflected in the wooden carvings on the ceilings and wooden posts. The image carvings are said to represent the Kauravas who were tied up here in the hideout by the Pandavas. The temple consists of a spacious congregation hall sufficiently enclosed by wooden supports. The dome-shaped shrine is made of slates locally extracted from limestone quarries. Adjoining are other shrines of Shiva and Hadimba goddess also.

The nearest air port is at Pathonkot, 99 Km from Khajjiar. Other reachable air ports are Kangra(130 km), Amritsar (220 km) and Chandigrah(400 km).

The nearest railway station is at Pathonkot, 94 Km from Khajjiar. Regular trains to Pathankot from New Delhi are available .

The Himachal Road Transport Corporation runs long distance services throughout the state from their main stands at Shimla, Solan, Kangra, Dharmsala and Pathnakot and from locations in the adjoining states of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh(UT). Private buses, serving everywhere else, frequent and provide a relaxed mode of commuting.

Why Khajjiar is called ‘Mini Switzerland of India’?

This invigorating place is as scenic as Switzerland itself. Such is the uncanny resemblance that Mr. Willy. T. Blazer, the then Head of Chancery of Switzerland in India acknowledged it as ‘Mini Switzerland of India’ in the year 1992. He was instrumental in constructing a Swiss-type yellow footpath signboard. He also took back a stone as memorabilia to be kept at the Swiss Parliament. On a clear sunny day, your eyes will automatically look upwards to Mount Kailash, the serrated skyline which is at times dark with forest to the crests of its notched ridges and at other times, glittering in the snow. Khajjiar is appropriately called the ‘Mini Switzerland of India.’ The key component which establishes it as ‘Mini Switzerland of India’ is no doubt the Himalayan Alps which is Khajjiar’s predominant feature. Just like the Swiss Alps, it has reached perfection in its grandeur. True to its nickname, the uprising forested spurs rise up to form the perfect match with the spectacular Himalayan Alps. The roaring clouds, whispering forests, picturesque lake are a pastoral utopia.

The impressive green pasture of Khajjiar has a little patch of a water-body right at the middle. This is the famous Khajjiar Lake. Bunches of herbs and grasses grow on this lake giving an impression of floating islands. The floating islands are the main draw of this Khajjiar Lake. Khajjiar often referred to as the Mini-Switzerland of India , is a less explored hill station in Chamba district , about 26 Km from Dalhousie in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh . Khajjiar – a deodar-enveloped saucer-shaped tiny Himalayan town in the Chamba valley is famous for its pristine picture-postcard environs , abundant greenery , culture , & packs a punch in terms of adventure activities , making it worth a visit for a vacation . This Himalayan town is one of the places in the world that bear a tropical resemblance to Switzerland and this hill station is situated at an altitude of 6500 feet above sea level surrounded by mountain ranges and amid dense pine forests with a pleasant climate makes this place a popular destination among tourists. The nearest railway station is Pathankot Cantonment, around 142 km away from Khajjiar. From there onwards, one needs to cover the distance by road. Pathankot Cantonment is well-connected to Khajjiar by frequent taxis, buses, and other transport.

Gaggal Airport which is also known as Kangra airport is situated in Gaggal and is the nearest airport from Khajjiar, located at 109 km. Other reachable airports are Pathankot (110 km), Amritsar (220 km), and Chandigarh (352 km).

NRI Assault in Himachal: Punjab Police Registers Zero FIR; Dhaliwal Writes to CM Sukhu

Chandigarh: The Punjab Police on Sunday registered a Zero FIR in connection with the alleged assault on a Punjab -origin NRI, who alleged that he was beaten by a group of men over parking in Himachal Pradesh 's Dalhousie.

Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal also wrote to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, seeking his intervention for a thorough inquiry.

The Punjab Police registered the Zero FIR under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 148 (rioting) of the Indian Penal Code.

The case has been registered at the Ranjit Avenue police station in Amritsar.

A Zero FIR can be filed at any police station, irrespective of the place of incident or jurisdiction, and can later be transferred to the appropriate police station.

Dhaliwal's letter came in the wake of non-resident Indian (NRI) Kawaljit Singh, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Amritsar, claiming that he was targeted as he was a Punjabi.

The Himachal Pradesh Police, however, has maintained the incident was not linked with any "inter-state or inter-community dispute".

Dhaliwal on Sunday visited the hospital where Singh is undergoing treatment.

In his letter to Sukhu, drawing his attention to the incident, the Punjab minister said, "As you are well aware that in this peak summer season tourists from Punjab and all across the world come to visit Himachal Pradesh . This highly condemnable and unfortunate incident shall impact tourism in the state if we collectively do not take strict action against the culprits." "Therefore, I shall be highly grateful if you look into the matter personally and please direct the concerned authorities to thoroughly enquire the matter. I would also request some of your precious time to personally discuss this unpleasant incident," he added.

Dhaliwal said thousands of people from Punjab visit tourist places such as Shimla, Manali, Kasauli, and Dalhousie every day and such incidents are not good for tourism.

Singh and his Spanish wife, who have been living in Spain for 25 years, returned to Punjab recently. Singh said he had gone to Dalhousie with his wife and a relative a few days ago.

According to his allegations, he was attacked by a group of around 100 people following an argument over parking.

He also accused the Himachal Pradesh Police of apathy.

However, an IPS officer from the state on Saturday claimed this was not the case.

"Singh had come to Khajjiar in Chamba district and was doing palm reading for some women. Someone felt offended by this act and there was a scuffle. Later, both parties reached a compromise in front of the police," Inspector General of Police (Northern Range) Santosh Patial had said.

"He (SIngh) had given in writing that he wanted no legal action and left," the officer had said.

"There is nothing like an inter-state or inter-community dispute and tourists are welcome in Himachal," Patial had said, dismissing the row as a "stray incident".

On Saturday, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia also demanded that the Himachal Pradesh government take action on the matter. (With inputs from PTI)
