Here's where all 30 players begin with the Tour Championship's staggered-start format

After a year’s worth of golf, good shots and bad, victories and close calls, the 2024 PGA Tour season comes down to one final event, the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The winner on Sunday from the 30-player field will claim not just the tournament title but also the FedEx Cup and its $25 million reward for the culmination of a year’s worth of golf.

As has been the case the past two years, Scottie Scheffler arrives in Atlanta this week with an early advantage. The Tour Championship’s staggered start format gives the leader in the FedEx Cup points list entering the tournament a two-stroke on his nearest rival (this year it’s Xander Schauffele) and an even bigger advantage on every other player competing. Scheffler will start the tournament at 10 under par, while Schauffele begins at eight under. Below is the starting positions for everybody playing at East Lake.

You could make the argument that just a two-shot advantage for Scheffler is not much considering how far ahead he was in the FedEx Cup points list (more than 1,000 compared to Schauffele), but the scale isn’t adjusted in that way. Scheffler might feel this way too considering that the head start hardly means he’s a lock to win. On the contrary, both of the last two years he was caught from behind, in 2022 by Rory McIlroy and a year ago by Viktor Hovland. Same with Justin Thomas when he was the leader going into the first year of the staggered start in 2019.

The other reason for Scheffler to be worried? His personal track record at East Lake is only so-so where as Schauffele’s is solid. Scheffler’s scoring average in 16 career rounds is 68.44. Meanwhile, Schauffele’s is 66.96, including a win on the course in the pre-staggered start days in 2017. He shot the lowest scores on the course in 2020 if you didn’t account for the staggered start.

Long story short, nothing is settled just yet as the tour’s final event of 2024 arrives.

FedEx Cup Playoffs: Tour Championship starting positions for all 30 golfers

The Tour Championship, the finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, begins this week in Atlanta. Here are the starting positions for all 30 players.

Getty Images

The PGA Tour season, at long last, is coming to a close. All that’s left is the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale in the Tour Championship, where (wait for it) $75 million will be up for grabs.

So, how does it all work? We’re glad you asked. We could all use a refresher.

The Tour Championship uses a stroke-based bonus system based on the current FedEx Cup standings , meaning not everyone enters the tournament on the same playing field.

This has been the formula for the past four years, as the Tour changed the format beginning in 2019. The old format crowned a Tour Championship winner and a FedEx Cup Playoffs champion (although sometimes it was the same person), and keeping track of essentially two different tournaments — for players and fans — was, well, confusing.

So now there’s just one champion, who, along with winning the Tour Championship, will also be the FedEx Cup Playoffs champ.

The leader of the FedEx Cup points race starts the Tour Championship, held at East Lake in Atlanta, at 10 under. The top five in the standings is staggered (2nd at eight under, 3rd at seven under, 4th at six under and 5th at five under), and the last 25 players in the field are more bunched (i.e. places 6-10 start at four under, and so on).

Here’s where everyone will start for the playoffs.

Tour Championship starting scores

10 under: Scottie Scheffler Eight under: Viktor Hovland Seven under: Rory McIlroy Six under: Jon Rahm Five under: Lucas Glover Four under: Max Homa, Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick Three under: Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele Two under: Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Tony Finau, Corey Conners, Si Woo Kim One under: Taylor Moore, Nick Taylor, Adam Schenk, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day Even: Sam Burns, Emiliano Grillo, Tyrrell Hatton, Jordan Spieth, Sepp Straka

But just because Scheffler has a two-stroke lead over second place — and a much larger lead over others — doesn’t mean he’s bound to run away with this.

Take last year, for example, when Scheffler held the same spot on the leaderboard but was eventually beaten by Rory McIlroy, who started the tournament six shots back and even rebounded from a triple bogey on his first hole of the week to win the whole thing.

You can follow the action from 1-6 p.m. ET on Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday. Saturday’s broadcast is 1-3 p.m. on Golf Channel and 3-7 p.m. on CBS, and Sunday’s final round is 12-1:30 p.m. on Golf Channel and 1:30-6 p.m. on CBS.

T he 2024 Pure Insurance Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Paul Broadhurst, who topped the PGA Tour Champions leaderboard this week with a win on the 2024 PGA Tour Champions schedule at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.

Broadhurst won this event, which also featues a separate pro-am with pros and players representing the First Tee program, by three shots on 14-under 202.

Broadhurst shot a final-round 72 at Pebble Beach Golf Links after all 80 players in the field played one round at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

Alex Cejka was solo runner-up, while Rocco Mediate, Vijay Singh and Doug Barron all tied for third place on 10-under 206.

Broadhurst won the $345,000 winner's share of the $2,300,000 purse.

Pure Insurance Championship recap notes

Broadhurst wins the 23rd PGA Tour Champions title of the year, getting into the winner's circle on the 50-plus tour yet again.

The money Broadhurst -- and every PGA Tour Champions player in the field -- earned is converted into Charles Schwab Cup points, with every dollar converted into two points during the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs.

There is no cut on PGA Tour Champions-run events, including the major championships they run.

TOUR Championship

ATLANTA — The PGA Tour season concludes at East Lake Golf Club for the Tour Championship this week, as the top 30 players look to take home the FedEx Cup.

Here is everything you need for the Tour Championship: a preview, full TV schedule, streaming schedule, and complete list of first-round tee times.

Tour Championship Information

Where: East Lake Golf Club (Par 70, 7,346 yards)

When: Aug. 24-27th

Purse: $75 million ($18 million to the winner)

Defending Champ: Rory McIlroy

Tour Championship Preview

The final event of the 2023 season is here as the PGA Tour looks to crown a FedEx Cup champion at the Tour Championship. Players will compete for a $75 million purse, where the winner will take home a whopping $18 million.

This week is different from the BMW Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship. Players start with strokes depending on where they finished on the points standings. Scottie Scheffler will start at 10-under, Viktor Hovland at 8-under, Rory McIlroy at 7-under, Jon Rahm at 6-under and so on.

East Lake Golf Club is a doozy. Multiple par-4s stretch beyond 450 yards, and there are only two par-5s on the course. Keeping it in the fairways will be imperative. Water comes into play on some pivotal holes, so avoiding the penalty areas will be a crucial component to hoisting the FedEx Cup trophy.

McIlroy sits in a strong spot entering the week. Last year, he came from behind and waltzed past Scheffler to win his third FedEx Cup. With nine straight top-9s and his game in form, can the Northern Irishman close it out in Atlanta again?

Scheffler fell short last year, but did he learn his lesson?

Hovland is coming off a historic 61 at Olympia Fields to win the BMW Championship, and he looks dialed in this week. Can he go back-to-back?

Xander Schauffele plays East Lake better than anyone in the field. Only Tiger Woods plays this course better historically. Schauffele won in 2017 and has finished in the top seven in the past six seasons.

So many intriguing storylines are here in Atlanta as the top players in the world will battle it out at East Lake. Of course, they will need to beat the heat too.

2024 Tour Championship leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler extends lead to seven strokes to open FedEx Cup finale

Scheffler may have an insurmountable lead at east lake golf club in atlanta.

Scottie Scheffler extended the two-stroke lead he took into the 2024 Tour Championship on Thursday, opening play in the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale with a 6-under 65 that shot him well in front of the field through 18 holes. Scheffler's 65 was the round of the day at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, and it marked his 50th round in the 60s this season with three left to increase that total.

Normally, such a score would be enough to suggest that Scheffler is in pole position to win a tournament. This week, though, given the advantage Scheffler held amid the Tour Championship's staggered start after the season-long FedEx Cup points race?

Yeah, it might already be over.

Scheffler holds a seven-shot lead over Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele. Morikawa posted the next-best round of the day (66) to shoot up the leaderboard, while Schauffele -- after starting the day two back of Scheffler -- struggled to go low at a course he has previously dominated before settling with a 70.

Let's take a look at Scheffler's first round and everything else that took place at the Tour Championship on Thursday.

1. Scottie Scheffler (-16):  It feels strange to note that someone is this far under par after 18 holes, but that's just how it goes at the Tour Championship. The only reason not to already call this for Scheffler is that he has failed to touch off a six-shot lead in the final round at this course before. Rory McIlroy beat him in 2022 even though he started that tournament six back of Scheffler.

Still, this was a dream start for the No. 1 player in the world, who said he's trying to think about shooting more 65s and not the $25 million that he could win by finishing first on Sunday.

"I wasn't thinking about the lead out there today," Scheffler said. "There's no reason to. It's the first day of the tournament. It's 72 holes. It's a long time out there to be playing with a lead or whatever it is. I was just focused on staying in my own world and continuing to just try to execute."

T2. Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele (-9) T4. Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott (-8) 9. Sahith Theegala (-7)

Morikawa tied Scott, Justin Thomas and Aaron Rai for second-lowest round of the day, and he certainly rode the biggest heater when he birdied the first six holes on the back nine on Thursday. We have been here with him before, though. Last year, Morikawa shot 61 in the opening round but faded back to T6 by the end of the week. Why? Well, it's so difficult to match the pace of the players who start at the top of the Tour Championship leaderboard, especially when it's Scheffler who starts at 10 under and shoots the lowest round in the field on Thursday.

"After [the ninth hole], I told myself to start only thinking about my shot and not worrying about if the ball is going to be perfect or not," said Morikawa, who shot 30 on the back nine. "We executed some shots, made some putts.

"Look, the game is good enough to come out here and win. I've just got to get out of my own head. I've talked a lot about that. It's hard because you try and perfect this game, and it is what it is. Sometimes it doesn't go your way, but you make doable scores. Today just got in a nice rhythm kind of around that turn."

Biggest movers

Up:  Thomas went from T26 to T14 with his 66. While he's not going to win from the that spot, J.T. could absolutely play his way on to the U.S. Presidents Cup team with a great showing this week.

Down:  There were a few who dropped nine spots. The one that stood out was Billy Horschel, who went from 21st to 30th after posting the worst round of the day, a 3-over 73. It was a disappointing showing from somebody who has been playing awesome golf and looked poised to make his second consecutive Presidents Cup team. Horschel and Thomas could be battling for that last spot.

2024 Tour Championship updated odds, picks

  • Scottie Scheffler: 2/7
  • Xander Schauffele: 8-1
  • Collin Morikawa: 20-1
  • Sam Burns: 30-1
  • Hideki Matsuyama: 35-1

This is a tough one. Scheffler is almost certainly going to win given how he's playing and the lead he had going in, but if you make me pick somebody here, I'm going with Schauffele at 8-1. There is a lot of golf left, and Schauffele dominates at this golf course. It's not inconceivable that he and Scheffler could be tied or something like that this time on Friday evening. Scheffler finished 5th in putting while Schauffele was 22nd on Thursday. If that flips, look out. Then the odds on Schauffele will be closer to 2-1 or 3-1.

Scheffler gets to -14

This looks like it will be a race between the top two players in the world. Scottie Scheffler is at -14, and Xander Schauffele is at -10. Those two are separating a bit from the rest of the field. How it should be.

This is wild.

New top five

Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa have entered the chat. Both are at 9 under and tied for second with Xander Schauffele. All three guys are three back of Scheffler.

Viktor Hovland's wild day

He has two doubles but also seven birdies on the day. After starting at -2, he's moved to -5 and within six of Scottie Scheffler's lead, which has moved to 12 under. It seems unlikely that Viktor would be able to successfully follow up his win from a year ago with another one at East Lake, but this isn't a bad start.

Keegan makes a move

Keegan Bradley is 1 under through five holes and has moved into a tie with Hideki Matsuyama in third on the leaderboard. Would have said this was impossible two weeks ago, and yet here we are.

Player of the Year race

If Scottie Scheffler wins the Tour Championship, I think he'll easily be Player of the Year. If Xander Schauffele wins it, I think he'll narrowly be Player of the Year. That's one thing that's at stake this week that I have not seen a lot of talk around, but I think the winner of this event will decide it, which if you look back is how it normally seems to go.

Early movers

Really early considering half the field has not yet teed off, but Taylor Pendrith (-1 through 3) and Aaron Rai (-1 through 3) are your two golfers under par so far. Pendrith may need a good week to make the Presidents Cup team. He's right on the bubble but is one of the few on the bubble that made it all the way to the Tour Championship.

Top 35 finishers earn place on the Corebridge Financial Team at the 2025 Senior PGA Championship

SUNRIVER, Oregon  – The 2024 Senior PGA Professional Championship heads to Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon, this week as 264 of the top PGA of America Golf Professionals 50 years of age and older will compete for the Leo Fraser Trophy.

The Senior PGA Professional Championship supported by Golf Channel annually features many of the finest senior players in the Association. The four-day, 72-hole Championship begins Thursday, Sept. 26, and concludes Sunday, Sept. 29.

The top 35 finishers will earn a spot on the Corebridge Financial Team to compete in the 2025 Senior PGA Championship at Congressional Country Club, Blue course, in Bethesda, Maryland, May 19-25.

Bob Sowards, the 2023 Senior PGA Professional Champion, is one of nine past Champions in the field. The PGA Director of Instruction at Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Powell, Ohio, shot a final round 6-under-par 66 to win by six and finish at 15-under-par 272 on PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker course last October. It marked Sowards’ second Senior PPC title as he became the seventh PGA of America Golf Professional to win the event twice.

“I did everything well,” said Sowards. “To win by six, you’ve got to be on top of your game. Being mentally focused and not giving away shots is the main thing. I felt like I did really well on that and trying to stay in the present. Hopefully I can duplicate that this year.”

Sowards, a five-time winner of the Senior PGA Professional Player of the Year award, plans to arrive early to familiarize himself with the Meadows and Woodlands courses. He has competed at Sunriver Resort before, finishing 8th and T-22 in the 2013 and 2007 PGA Professional Championships.

In addition to the Leo Fraser Trophy, named after the 16th president of the PGA of America, players are competing for a $335,000 purse, including the winner’s share of $29,800.

Exemptions also in play include:

  • The top five finishers gain an exemption into the final stage of the 2025 PGA Tour Champions Qualifying School – Final Stage 2024 (providing they have entered).
  • The top eight finishers, including ties, will automatically qualify for the 2025 Senior PGA Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, next October.

Each player will compete on Sunriver’s Meadows and Woodlands courses on Thursday and Friday before a cut to the low 90 scorers and ties. The third and final rounds will be played exclusively on the Meadows course. A second cut following Saturday’s round will be made to the low 70 scorers and ties.

Cam Smith locked in for BMW Australian PGA Championship and Queensland PGA

pga tour championship line up

Three-time champion Cam Smith will tee it up at the 2024 BMW Australian PGA Championship after confirming his place in the field for the November 21-24 event at Royal Queensland Golf Club.

The Queenslander joins defending champion Min Woo Lee and fellow major championship winner Jason Day as feature players for this year’s event which once again is co-sanctioned by the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia and DP World Tour. In a special treat for golf fans, Smith will also play in the Queensland PGA Championship – the fifth event on the 2024/25 Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia – at Nudgee Golf Club on October 31-November 3. Smith’s impressive BMW Australian PGA Championship record features back-to-back victories in 2017-18 before he won again in 2022. A fourth Joe Kirkwood Cup would see the 2022 Open champion join Robert Allenby and Norman Von Nida as a four-time PGA winner, trailing only Kel Nagle (six wins) and Billy Dunk (five). The 31-year-old continues to be a huge supporter of Australian golf and the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia and his presence at Royal Queensland is sure to again draw massive crowds to his hometown championship. “Coming home to Queensland is a highlight of my year. It’s always special to be back playing in front of my family, friends and all the golf fans and hopefully being up near the lead,” Smith said. “This year, I’ll be playing in both the BMW Australian PGA Championship and the Queensland PGA Championship which is going to be something different for me but I’m really looking forward to both weeks back home. “Of course I’d love to win both but it’s going to be difficult with the fields that will be at the two tournaments. “I think playing at Nudgee will be good preparation for Royal Queensland and hopefully will have me at my best to attempt to take back the Joe Kirkwood Cup.” PGA of Australia CEO Gavin Kirkman said securing Smith was a huge boost for both events. “We all love seeing Cam playing golf back in Australia and I’m sure he’ll be determined to put on a great show in front of his home crowd this year at both Royal Queensland and Nudgee,” Kirkman said. “Cam really appeals to all ages of golf fans. He’s a big reason why so many youngsters are taking up the game and are in our galleries at Royal Queensland each year. “Winning the Joe Kirkwood Cup for the fourth time would consolidate his position as one of the greats of Australian golf.” Minister for Tourism and Sport, Michael Healy said: “What a coup luring the legendary, Cam Smith, back home to headline what will be yet another unforgettable BMW Australian PGA Championship.

“The line-up is already looming as the hottest ticket in town, with Smith setting up a mouth-watering showdown with defending champion and superstar Min Woo Lee at the iconic Royal Queensland Golf Club. “The economic impacts of this time-honoured event are also significant and great news for our tourism operators with projections that more than $15 million will be injected into the state’s visitor economy.” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said Cam Smith’s return to Brisbane would add to the exciting line-up for both the Queensland PGA Championship and BMW Australian PGA Championship. “Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital and our major events create more to see and do in the suburbs,” Cr Schrinner said. “We are thrilled Cam Smith will join a suite of world class athletes to tee off at two must-see events for local and visiting golf fans. “The benefits of these elite tournaments will be felt across the region, delivering millions in economic support for local Brisbane businesses.” As a young professional, Cam Smith was runner-up in the 2015 Queensland PGA Championship after finishing as leading amateur in the 2011 event. His 2024 highlights have included two LIV Golf team wins with Ripper GC and a T6 finish at The Masters. The BMW Australian PGA Championship is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland, and Brisbane City Council via Brisbane Economic Development Agency.

The 2024 PGA Championship began with 156 golfe r s in contention for the Wanamaker Trophy. But the field will be much smaller than that for the final two rounds at Valhalla Golf Club .

More than 70 golfers were officially cut from the major tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, after the second round, which was suspended Friday night due to darkness, wrapped up Saturday morning.

Xander Schauffele is halfway to his first major championship as he maintained his position atop the leaderboard in Round 2. After posting the best round in tournament history Thursday, Schauffele shot a 3-under 68 in Round 2 to push his score to 12-under.

But right on Schauffele's heels is 2020 tournament winner Collin Morikawa at 11-under. Morikawa shot a 6-under, tied for the best score of Round 2, to climb up to second on the leaderboard. Sahith Theegala, also eyeing his first major title, sits in third at 10-under.

Meanwhile, world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler shot a 5-under just hours after he was arrested outside the tournament for not following police orders during the investigation of a pedestrian fatality. Scheffler, who faces multiple charges stemming from the incident, is tied for fourth with Bryson DeChambeau, Thomas Detry and Mark Hubbard at 9-under as he tries to become just the fifth player since 1960 to sweep the first two majors of the year.

Reigning tournament champion Brooks Koepka remains in striking distance at 7-under, tying him for 11th. Koepka is looking to go back-to-back at the PGA Championship for a second time in his career.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning after trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.

Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.

Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.

Maj. Jason Logsdon of the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections told ESPN that Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. ET Friday without bail. He arrived at Valhalla less than an hour before he was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m. ET.

"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers," Scheffler said in a statement. "It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

"Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."

According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.

At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.

After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.

Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"

According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.

"You need to get out of the way," the officer told Darlington. "Right now, he's going to jail, and there's nothing you can do about it."

The officer -- Det. Bryan Gillis, identified as Det. Gillis in the arrest report -- was dragged "to the ground" and suffered "pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist" after the car "accelerated forward," according to the police report.

The officer was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler's car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

Scheffler's attorney, Steven Romines, told ESPN that the golfer attempted to enter Valhalla Golf Club as he had been instructed to earlier, unaware there had been a fatal wreck just up the road.

"He was going into Valhalla to work out," Romines said. "He was getting ready for his tee time. They were directing traffic. He held his credential out and was going in like they'd been instructed to. Apparently, there had been a traffic accident, maybe even a fatality, down the road, and that had changed the traffic patterns, and he was unaware of that."

Romines, speaking outside the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, said the officer who attempted to stop Scheffler wasn't part of the regular event-traffic detail at Valhalla Golf Club, "so that's where the miscommunication arose."

"They are allowed to go through, that's why they have the credential and the wave-through," Romines said. "[Scheffler] was unaware there had been a wreck, and he proceeded like they'd been instructed to. He did exactly as he was instructed to enter the premises."

Romines said Scheffler would cooperate fully with police and "we'll deal with it as it progresses."

Scheffler, 27, has won four of his past five starts, including his second major championship at the Masters in April.

The start of the second round was delayed after a shuttle bus struck and killed a pedestrian outside Valhalla Golf Club, a spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department confirmed to ESPN.

The unidentified man was attempting to cross Shelbyville Road when he was struck in a dedicated lane for buses. Police said the man died at the scene.

"This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club," the PGA of America said in a statement. "This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones."

Several police and first responders were still at the scene at 6:45 a.m. ET. Traffic had backed up on the roadway in dark and wet conditions, and shuttle buses bringing fans to the golf course had been stopped.

The second round had been scheduled to start at 7:15 a.m. ET.
