Mit der Berlin Distillery wollen wir die Berliner Spirit-Szene um hochwertige, manufakturell produzierte Destillate bereichern. Unser Ziel: besondere Genussmomente in die Flasche bringen – inspiriert von Berlin und so vielfältig wie unsere Stadt.

Als Gründer und Brenner wollen wir Nachhaltigkeit, Transparenz und Identität zusammenbringen. Für herausragende Destillate mit Berliner Spirit. Unsere Rohstoffe und Botanicals kommen aus der Region, bei der Auswahl der Produzenten liegt uns nachhaltiger, fairer Anbau sehr am Herzen – und gebrannt wird selbstverständlich direkt in Berlin.

Den Anfang machen unsere Gins: Mit unserem fruchtigen SUNDOWN GIN, floralen URBAN GARDEN GIN, kräftigen BERLINER NACHT GIN und dem würzig-frischen BBQ DRY GIN starten wir eine vielfältige Gin-Range, die wir in Zukunft weiter für dich ausbauen. Später kommen weitere spannende Destillate dazu.

Small Batch, große Stadt! Wobei es in unserem Fall schon eher “Micro”-Batch heißen müsste. Denn wir brennen unsere Destillate selbst – auf einer 40-Liter-Kupferbrennblase . Kleine Produktion für größte Qualität.

Viele Zutaten für unsere Spirits kommen möglichst direkt aus der Region – so wie unsere Spargelschalen für den Spargel Gin oder unsere Sanddornbeeren im Sundown Gin. Das ist nicht nur nachhaltiger – und sorgt für den regionalen Touch unserer Destillate.

With the House of Gin, the Hotel Palace on Budapester Straße in Charlottenburg is literally mixing up its concept. Until two years ago, the renowned restaurant here focused on star cuisine and a classic clientele, but now a thriving, modern interior attracts gin in its most beautiful form .

Countless gold-coloured batons hover imposingly above the surrounding bar, which is eight metres long and four metres deep. The motto "Stay Gold" can be found everywhere in the House of Gin, in the furniture, as well as in the drinks. Behind the golden bar, an incredible 150 gins and a few exceptional whiskies, tequilas and rums from all over the world are presented over four floors.

Old European spirit origins such as Spain, Belgium and Scotland make a start. The next board is devoted exclusively to unusual English gins. Above that are the products of German distilleries, which produce a conspicuously large number of good gins and therefore also make up a large part of the House of Gin. Finally, rarities from Japan, Switzerland and the USA have found a place at the top.

If you like it classic, they are all served with tonics such as "Swiss Mountain Spring" from Basel, "Aqua Monaco" from Munich or "BTW Tonic" from England. But, above all, the House of Gin wants to encourage you to try something new and not to fall back on the classics like Hendriks or Monkey 47. That's why they don't serve them here at all.

For example, the signature gin and tonic "Stay Gold G&T" is mixed from a Premium Bombay with gold dust, and "The Voyage G&T" features a gin distilled exclusively for the House of Gin. Much attention is paid to the presentation of the signature drinks, which are staged similarly to star restaurants. The eye drinks along with the drink.

For those who like it less playful: the team can also be purist! Most gins are served without fuss or decoration in the glass, only with three bare ice balls. You should rely on the advice to try it neat before topping it up with tonic. This is the only way to enjoy all the flavours that make the different gins so unique.

Gin can be truly celebrated in the dim interior, which, with its reminiscences of the 1920s, would also look good as a film set for the series Babylon Berlin. Beef tartar or sous-vide-cooked meat dishes from the adjacent restaurant Beef 45 provide adequate culinary accompaniment.

A journey by subway can be made via the lines U1, U2 and U3 to Gleisdreieck. From there it is still a walk of about 2 minutes.

Gin from Berlin – about gin tasting and gin distilling courses

The Berlin Distillery produces high-quality gin from certified organic products in a small manufactory. Each gin is something special and unique. The taste is unmistakable.

The raw materials and botanicals for the Berlin gin come from the region wherever possible. If this is not possible, then value is placed on sustainable, fair cultivation when selecting the producers. The production of the gin and the “Geiste” (spirits) takes place in Berlin.

What is gin and how is it made?

Gin is a mostly colourless alcoholic drink with juniper. It is an ingredient in cocktails such as the Martini or the long drink Gin Tonic, but can also be drunk neat.

At the Berlin Distillery, I get a crash course in gin making. Raw alcohol and various ingredients are needed to give the gin its distinctive taste. For example, the Berlin production likes to use oranges and lemons, raspberries, chilli, cardamom, pepper and of course juniper. It wouldn’t be gin without juniper!

The flavour-giving substances are placed in the raw alcohol and distilled with it during maceration in a still. The process takes time and then the resulting alcohol goes into a tank. There the distiller fills up the distillate with water, otherwise it would not be drinkable. Once the taste has turned out the way the producer wants it, the bottles are filled and labelled. In the small distillery in Berlin, this is still done by hand.

What are Geiste?

In the spirit, crushed fruit is added to the neutral high-proof alcohol. For this, one usually uses only fruits with little sugar content. The mixture is then macerated until the alcohol has taken on the flavor of the fruit.

No coloring or flavoring may be added to the spirit.

Gin Tasting at Berlin Distillery

Now that I had gained an insight into gin production, it was time to taste the products.

SUNDOWN GIN

This gin is one of the most popular products of the Berlin Distillery. 11 harmoniously matched botanicals combine to create a fruity gin. I first taste orange and lemon out. Only later comes the taste of cardamom, juniper and sea buckthorn berry. What else is in this gin and in what quantities, of course, is not revealed. Together, however, the ingredients give a wonderfully round taste.

BERLINER NACHT GIN

Somewhat stronger in taste is the Berlin Night Gin, which is offered by the Berlin Distillery as an ideal companion through the Berlin Night. This gin gets its flavor from the 5 botanicals: juniper, lemons, Thai basil, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves. I liked the taste of it.

URBAN GARDEN GIN

When the Berlin Distillery moved into the premises of the industrial estate, beach mugwort grew in the urban garden of the site. This was the impetus to distil a gin that also contains lemon and a little lavender in addition to the beach mugwort. It smells of fresh flowers and herbs, for me almost like the scent of summer. In the meantime, the Urban Garten no longer exists on the industrial estate. The beach mugwort is grown by a nursery especially for the gin production.

BBQ DRY GIN

For me, the ideal gin for a cosy barbecue with friends. I have never drunk a gin that has such a smoky yet mellow flavour. The juniper used for this gin has been roasted over beech wood. You almost feel the smoke in your nose, which gives the gin this inimitable taste.

A real surprise for me.

ERDBEERGEIST

After tasting a few types of gin, I naturally wanted to know what the spirits from Berlin Distillery tasted like. First I tried the strawberry spirit. For the 43.3% spirit, strawberries from the Uckermark region are blended with organic neutral alcohol. The spirit is then stored in a tawny port wine barrel.

Before I could even taste it, the wonderful port wine smell hit my nose and reminded me of our time in Porto. What an unmistakable smell! On the palate, I could taste the strawberry very well. I like the strawberry brandy!

Can you also visit the Berlin Distillery?

Of course! There are 2-hour guided tours followed by a tasting. Even more exciting is certainly the participation in a gin distilling course. Here, visitors not only learn how to make gin, they are also allowed to put together and distil their own flavour composition. Don’t worry, you will of course be advised on the combination of ingredients – after all, it’s supposed to taste good! After 3.5 hours, the gin is ready and can be taken home.

I had a lot of fun during the visit and learned a lot of new things. The gin also tasted good – it was a great visit that I can recommend.

It’s exciting times for Gin all over the world. Even  Germany, the land of beer and Schnapps, has gone Gin mad. We call it a ‘Gin Renaissance’ at the Amstel House bar. Your grandfather’s favourite drink has been on an unstoppable rise for the past 5 years. Fans of the drink will go to great lengths to score the best one in town. As far as Berlin goes, we did the research so you don’t have to worry about that bit. Just follow the gin gem path below and nip your favourite drink in one of these fine establishments. Presenting a handy list with the best Gin Bars in Berlin that even true gin connoisseurs will be delighted with. Cheers!

1. BASALT – Botanical hide-out Like Gin, the Wedding area wedding is up and coming. A short bike ride from the Amstel House, you find Basalt . This cocktail bar gem is a lush botanical hide out with the best service and craft cocktails made with fresh ingredients and home grown herbs! Try the ‘Fur Elisa’ gin based cocktail with a.o. a hint of grapefruit, white chocolate, lemon, thyme and coriander.

2. WINDHORST – Diplomatic GTs There’s lots of funky and underground stuff going on in the outskirts of the city, but as you’re doing your touristy biz, end your day with THE best gin tonic in town at this classic place. Windhorst hosts lots diplomats so you might be able to spy on some foreign policy while sipping a GT.

3. Redwood – Mixing in Mitte When in Mitte district, we highly recommend Redwood for evening drinks! Their handy cocktail matrix menu helps both beginners and cocktail veterans to choose their favourite drink and fresh ingredients. The ‘ Storm at Sea’ with Plymouth Gin, house infused ginger lime soda, and Violet or the ‘The Narcissist’ with gin, lime, ginger beer, crème de violette, muddled shiso leaf are a favourite of many. And their bar food is pretty delish as well so you can pretty much stay here all night!

And off course, you’re always welcome for some mean and affordable cocktails at the Amstel Bar  after an adventurous day in Berlin. Happy Hour is from 6- 8 pm.

Berlin Dry Gin joined Berliner Brandstifter's range in 2013. The vision was to create a gin that embodies the spirit of Berlin. A homage to summers in the city — when the elderflowers are in full bloom, delicate mallows blossom in the meadows, and the sweet scent of woodruff lingers in the air, greeting you as you stroll through the forest. All these exquisite scents and flavours are yearning to be captured in a bottle of gin. The fresh taste of Berliner Brandstifter Gin evokes carefree summer days in the capital.

Our gin has a characterful juniper base, refined with hints of blossoming flowers and a unique freshness. It balances subtle, smooth and floral nuances with the classic dry gin's complex and sophisticated foundation.

What is Dry Gin?

Beyond their vastly different flavour profiles, gins can also be classified based on their production, origin or composition. Dry gin is the most popular type of gin worldwide. As the name implies, it is a dry gin, meaning it is unsweetened. Only natural botanicals and no artificial flavours may be used in its production. Further criteria include a minimum alcohol content of 37.5 % ABV, low overall sugar content (max. 0.1 g to 0.5 g per litre), and a minimum double distilled alcohol and single distilled herbs and flowers. Dry gin is also characterised by dominant juniper notes. In our Berlin Dry Gin, however, juniper provides a base note but takes more of a backseat due to the presence of botanicals. Hence it is categorised as a New Western Dry Gin.

How is Berlin Dry Gin produced?

Many locally picked flowers and botanicals are used in the annual production of our 7-fold filtered Berlin Dry Gin. These are macerated for several weeks before being distilled using an elaborate single distillation process.

Our partner in Kaulsdorf, Berlin, combines the individual distillates with the base alcohol in the final step. For this, we rely on the wheat distillate from our Premium Kornbrand. The wheat is sourced exclusively from Germany at the highest quality grade.

We produce Berlin Dry Gin in small batches of 9,999 bottles per edition. Each bottle is numbered and sealed by hand to guarantee our commitment to quality.

Wild Child Gin uses hand-picked juniper berries, herbs such as rosemary and coriander as well as Calabrian citrus and bergamot. Careful distillation using the unique spring water captured from the Ore mountains  gives our wild spirit a gentle core. 

Born to be ... loud..

The basis for our Wild Child Gin is the basic distillate that we produce for our Sash & Fritz vodka. A particularly fine, soft and creamy brandy is distilled from German wheat using classic and some special work steps known from winemaking. We let the different botanicals macerate one after the other at different temperatures. We take great care in the subsequent distillation and regularly check the temperature and the resulting distillate. We have copied the development of the aroma and taste structure of our Wild Child Gin from successful perfumers. We have placed three top notes on complex base and middle notes. These are Earl Gray tea, rosemary, and bergamot. These top notes, together with the juniper and other herbal impressions, balance together to provide a fresh, earthy, and somewhat wild flavour profile.

Whether enjoyed neat, on the rocks with a lemon or bergamot zest, or the classic way as a Gin & Tonic, Martini or Gimlet, the wild aroma promises surprising enjoyment. BORN TO BE... A WILD GIN!

3cl Wild Child - Berlin Dry Gin | 2cl Ruby Port  | 1cl Campari Stir all ingredients in a tumbler filled with ice, rub the rim of the glass with orange zest and add it to the drink for decoration.

Wild Child Gimlet

5cl Wild Child - Berlin Dry Gin | 2cl Lime Juice Mix all ingredients in a mixing glass over ice cubes with a dash of lime juice until the glass fogs up, then strain into a pre-cooled coupette or martini glass and serve with lime zest.

Bohemian Rhapsody Martini

3 cl Wild Child - Berlin Dry Gin | 1 cl  Sash & Fritz - Der Deutsche Wodka | 1 bar spoon Ice wine (A good Riesling Auslese will also do the trick!) | 1 dash Peychaud's Bitters Stir all ingredients in a mixing glass over ice cubes until the glass fogs up, then strain into a pre-cooled coupette or martini glass.

Wild Child Basil Smash

6cl Wild Child - Berlin Dry Gin | 3 cl lemon juice, 6-8 basil leaves, 1-2 cl sugar syrup Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds. Strain twice through a fine strainer into a tumbler filled with ice and serve decorated with a basil leaf.

Wild Child Gin & Tonic

5cl Wild Child - Berlin Dry Gin | 1-2 pieces star anise | Indian Tonic Fill a large burgundy glass with ice, add the gin with a piece of star anise and swivel the glass for 10 - 20 seconds, top up with Thomas Henry Tonic Water as desired and serve with a dried orange.

Wild Child Rickey

5cl   Wild Child  | 1/2  Lime | Sodawater Fill a large tumbler or a long drink glass with ice cubes, squeeze in the juice of half a lime, add the gin and top up with soda water to taste. Serve with a stick of lemongrass as a stirrer.
