Underwater Waterfall Mauritius
The phenomenal Underwater Waterfall in Mauritius is one of the most unique geological formations in the world. Located in the southern-west tip of the island near the UNESCO World Heritage site of Le Morne Brabant, this dramatic and out of the ordinary, geological phenomenon offers an outstanding bird’s eye view.
Geological Explanation Of The Underwater Waterfall
The mystery behind this fascinating phenomenon is actually a spectacular optical illusion- there is no underwater waterfall but there simply seems to be one. This can be explained by the fact that Mauritius was created around 8 million years ago compared to its surrounding islands like La Reunion and Rodrigues. These islands were formed by volcanic eruptions to form what is now known as the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean.
The islands sit upon one of the largest Submarine Plateaus (Ocean Shelf) in the Indian Ocean, no deeper than 150 meters below the sea level. On the shelf’s edge, there is a ‘drop-off’, plunging down to over 4000 meters deep into the abyss.
Due to this formation, sand from the nearby beaches is forced off the plateau by oceanic currents, thus giving the impression of water falling.
Location Of The Underwater Waterfall
The phenomenal underwater waterfall is located just off the coast of Le Morne, another famous landmark of Mauritius- declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This immense basaltic rock rises above 550 metres and it sits around a wild landscape inspiring an unspoilt beauty.
Mostly known as a historical and cultural site, Le Morne Brabant was once used as a refuge for the runaway slaves, and who eventually leapt to their deaths from the summit in order to avoid being tortured. Dating back to the colonial period, the slaves were facing many atrocities and corporal punishments while toiling the fields. Due to the inhumane conditions inflicted by their masters, the slaves took the gut to flee to the forests and some committed suicide.
Besides it’s historical significance, Le Morne is home to two rare plant species, notably the Mandrinette and the national flower Boucle D’Oreille. The site also has many caves and overhangs found on the steep slopes.
From a helicopter you can easily see details of the summit where you will find lush, wild vegetation flourishing on the fertile plateau.
Underwater Waterfall Mauritius - Helicopter Tour
Undeniably spectacular and breath-taking, this illusory underwater waterfall can be best seen from a helicopter. When you view this incredible formation from different aerial angles, the ocean serves as a spectrum of different colours: whites, greens and blues giving a sense of a 3-dimensional underwater waterfall.
Enjoy the dramatic view of this part of the island- one which is truly unique in the world!
Satellite pictures from Google Maps can give you an idea of what you’ll see

It is indeed a rare phenomenon, even considered unique in the world . And it’s during your stay in Mauritius that you’ll get the chance to see it with your own eyes !
So, what exactly is this Mauritius underwater waterfall? Where and how can you see it?

Actually, the Mauritius underwater waterfall is an optical illusion .
But before uncovering its mystery , let me first tell you where it is located .
This incredible natural mirage is situated a few hundred meters off the coast of Morne Brabant , the emblematic mountain in the southwest of Mauritius.
And here’s what it looks like:
Impressive , isn’t it?
It’s an unbelievable landscape that you won’t find anywhere else but in Mauritius .
Do you see all that water that appears to fall and plunge into the depths , beneath the sea?
Well, in fact, this illusion of underwater waterfalls has an explanation .
It’s not really a waterfall but more a flow of sand and sediments . These are carried from the beaches out to sea by the ocean currents , until they reach a fault where they are pulled to the bottom.
With the different shades of sand colors , it looks like you’re seeing a moving waterfall , bubbling and foamy. But it’s actually a sand waterfall !
Carried by the currents, the sand reaches the edge of the fault and plunges inside . The sediments then fall to a depth of 4000 meters, into the marine fault located there. It’s kind of like a giant hourglass!
How to See the Underwater Waterfall of Mauritius?
Seeing the Morne underwater waterfall with your own eyes is an experience that leaves no one indifferent. Those who have been fortunate enough to witness this spectacle report being awestruck by the beauty of this unusual landscape .
So if you’re eager to treat yourself to this gift during your holiday in Mauritius, you should know that you have several options:
To fully appreciate the beauty of this mind-blowing optical effect , taking to the skies is a must.
From the coast or from the sea, the waterfall is almost invisible , and the viewing angle does not allow one to witness the illusion. The only way to observe this phenomenon is to see it from the sky .
And for that, you can turn to the team at LagoonFlight , which organizes seaplane flights over the lagoon of Morne and its famous underwater waterfalls.
Takeoff is from La Prairie beach , a beautiful wild beach east of Morne. Accompanied by an experienced professional pilot , you’ll have an incredible panoramic view over the entire southwest coast and its magnificent turquoise lagoon.
For this seaplane flight in Mauritius you can choose from several options:
- A 15-minute Experience flight : moderate altitude, flyover of the village of Baie du Cap, Macondé rock, the underwater waterfall, Îlot Fourneau, and the village of Morne.
- A 25-minute Discovery flight : higher altitude, flyover of the waterfall, Îlot Fourneau, Macondé rock, Bel Ombre beach, and Rivière des Galets.
- A 40-minute Privilege flight : flyover of the underwater waterfall followed by the south coast up to Souillac and Gris Gris beach.
- An 80-minute Excellence flight : a complete journey along the south coast towards Grand Port in the southeast, and up to Île aux Cerfs before returning.

You’ll even have a radio to communicate with each other live and fully share the moment.
To fly over the Morne underwater waterfall as a duo , all you have to do is book your tandem flight by clicking below:

The price is higher than that of the seaplane flight , but the advantage is that you can be together in the helicopter and share this truly intimate moment. Each helicopter can carry 4 to 6 passengers, unlike the seaplane which only has one seat in addition to the pilot.
You can already book your Mauritius helicopter flight over by clicking the button below:
Other Ways to See the Underwater Waterfall
Not a fan of flying? Prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground ?
Or maybe you simply don’t have the budget for a seaplane or helicopter flight ?
In that case, I have three solutions to allow you to still see the underwater waterfall of Mauritius (even though, of course, it’s nothing like the thrill and sensation of seeing it from above with your own eyes).
If you embark on the hike to the summit of Morne Mountain , you will be treated to a stunning view of the entire South coast. From there, you can spot the underwater waterfall in the distance, although you won’t see the illusion. But it’s still super cool!
It’s best to hike with a guide for your safety and to benefit from their extensive knowledge throughout the hike.
Book your guided hike at Morne Brabant very easily by clicking below:
If you can’t go see it in person, you can settle for admiring the illusion of the waterfall in a video.
It also gives you a preview of what awaits you during your future seaplane flight or helicopter ride.
You will find several videos of the waterfall on the Internet, including this one which is quite good, shot with a drone:
- Can you swim in underwater waterfall Mauritius?
It is not recommended at all due to the currents. It is also quite far offshore and, to my knowledge, there are no diving sessions organized at this site.
- Is the underwater waterfall in Mauritius a dangerous site?
The underwater waterfall in Mauritius does not represent any particular danger as it is observed from a distance.
Many travelers mistakenly think (wrongly) that healthcare in Mauritius is affordable and that they don’t need travel insurance. But in reality, the public healthcare system is fragile and even a simple consultation in a private clinic can be very costly!
That’s why it is essential to take out a travel insurance that offers good medical coverage before you leave.
For a safe journey , I recommend the following two insurances ( both include epidemic coverage , like COVID-19, very important!)
To subscribe, it’s very easy, just click on the orange links below :
- ACS AMI Globe Partner : Medical insurance and repatriation
- Assur Travel Summum : Premium insurance (medical, repatriation, stolen luggage, flight delay, cancellation, and more!)

Mauritius underwater sand waterfall flight tour over le morne, active life , earth science , guide , island.
Quick Navigation
A Honeymoon Destination
As many young couples do, together with my wife, we have chosen Mauritius for our honeymoon from a very few options that were open for traveling outside European Union in 2021. Thankfully, this paradise island was the best wedding gift we could hope for.
For some reason, the underwater sand waterfall illusion has a relatively small amount of information online and we got to know it completely by a chance. It so happened, my wife’s hairstylist went to Mauritius for her honeymoon as well. She mentioned the underwater waterfall as the highlight of the island and told us that we must book a flight now or else we wouldn’t get it. We didn’t care too much at once but after checking some photographs of the illusion online – we understood that if we manage to get to the island during these strange times – we must try to experience this exceptional sight.
Is the Underwater Waterfall in Mauritius Real?
Since Mauritius underwater sand waterfall is rather an illusion than an actual waterfall, a certain angle is required to see this unique vista. Therefore, it is impossible just to paddleboard to the edge of it to see the waterfall from a different angle. I imagine it wouldn’t feel much different than going out beyond the coral reef anywhere else on the island. Of course, you can try – it wouldn’t hurt. Like so many kitesurfers know, the underwater waterfall is not dangerous. Nevertheless, as I told you, one needs to get high to see the illusion. Only a flying machine can get a human there.
Mauritius Underwater Sand Waterfall Explained
This natural miracle is not that simple to explain in scientific terms. The underwater waterfall is simply an illusion caused by the water currents slowly moving out of the lagoon into the open ocean and by the rapid change of the depths. Naturally, the moving currents affect the sediments on the bottom of the lagoon and they are slowly displaced towards the edge, where the coral reef ends. This leaves a fake impression of rapidly moving sand, which is especially misleading once observed in photographs. In reality, the underwater sand waterfall illusion is still like a picture. Nothing is really moving.
Though there is no sand dropping down the waterfall, the topography drops about 4 km / 2,49 mi straight over the coral reef, right at the middle of the illusion. This might sound dreading but it helps to imagine that Le More Brabant is a 4.000 m / 13,123 ft + mountain with most of it lying underwater. You see, Mauritius is a relatively young volcanic island risen from the abyss of the Indian Ocean about 10 m years ago. In reality, it is not surprising to find these depths in the middle of the ocean, the miracle here is that the volcanic hotspot managed to surface such a large island over sea level.
All these geological conditions helped to create this wonder of nature, a truly aspiring sight, which could be hardly replicated anywhere else in the world. The underwater waterfall was even listed on The Telegraph’s “24 of the world’s most incredible natural phenomena”. All of this wouldn’t be possible if it was not for the crystal clear water surrounding the Island Nation.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Though some will claim that the underwater waterfall is a part of UNESCO World Heritage sites, Le Morne Brabant is listed in this prestigious list of protected areas for historical reasons, not for its nature, especially not for the illusion. Given that, the topography of the area is the precursor for both the underwater waterfall and the safe shelter to slaves who hid in the mountain during 18-19th centuries.

Nothing will describe the immense beauty of Mauritius underwater sand waterfall illusion and its surrounding as well as photographs. These are just a few moments from a short yet long 15-minutes flight.
Mauritius Underwater Waterfall Tours
Basically, there are two options to see Mauritius sand waterfall illusion, or rather, two means of transportation: a helicopter and a seaplane. Both can get quite expensive beyond the reasonable reach of common travelers. The good news are that if you want to see the beautiful turquoise lagoons from the bird’s view – you can climb Le Morne Brabant Rock for magnificent vistas in all directions.
- LagoonFLIGHT – ( € 120/ person) . The seaplane option was my personal choice, mainly for the price but it also sounded much more adventurous. LagoonFLIGHT operates from Prairie Beach near Le Morne Brabant village. To get there you’ll need to hire full day trip with a chauffeur guide .
- Air Mauritius – (from € 800 / helicopter) . I imagine you’ll have more time embracing the majestic illusion of the underwater waterfall but helicopter is much more expensive and noisy. Air Mauritius operate from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. If you don’t have a car you’ll have to hire a Mauritius airport transfer .
Other Popular Activities in Mauritius
Full day trip to northern islands.
Enjoy a comfortable catamaran cruise to the stunning Northern Isles, where you can visit all three isles, spot dolphins and whales, snorkel, and relax while enjoying a BBQ lunch and drinks.
South West Full-day Tour

Full Day Cruise to Isle aux Cerfs
Explore the paradise island of Ile aux Cerfs on a 45-foot catamaran, where you can snorkel with tropical fish, swim, search for dolphins in their natural habitat, and more.
Personal Experience
I have to admit that before taking the flight I was still sceptical about all the “illusion stuff”. I was not sure if it is worth the money. What if there won’t be enough light, what if we won’t reach the correct heights, or the angle is just not going to be right. What if we won’t see the famous Mauritius underwater waterfall illusion, what if it is only visible on an edited photo? In the end, I can’t say that I cared much once we got into the air. Waterfall or not, wherever it was the coral reef or Black River Gorges National Park , the views were simply breathtaking.
The short flight of 15 minutes felt like an instant and forever at the same time. The adrenaline rush and the awe caused by the exceptional experience seem to have distorted reality. The views are still fixated in my mind and I’m not sure if even the pictures do them justice. As my pilot said: “In reality, it is even better, isn’t it?” I absolutely agree, this could easily be the crown jewel of my whole trip to Mauritius. Underwater sand waterfall illusion trip is a must-do on the island for everyone, even if you can barely afford it. This is once in a lifetime opportunity.
What Can I Do to Protect the Underwater Waterfall Illusion?
- Use less freshwater in Mauritius – While it would be very hard for humans to unwillingly destroy this natural wonder, without the clean waters of Mauritius it wouldn’t be visible as clearly as it is now. The increased water flows into the blue lagoons surrounding the island has already affected the status quo of these majestic waters and killed most of the coral reefs in the shallows. Reducing the water flow would reduce the erosion caused by rivers and the amount of minerals influx.
- Fight climate change – Whatever by personal choices, by voting, by pressuring your direct electees or by funding people and organizations, who directly fight fossil fuel corporations, help to reduce the impact of the climate change on Mauritius. The increased rainfall on the island increases the water flows and the number of fertilizers washed into the water, hence the lagoons. This greatly affects the local biodiversity and water.

Underwater Waterfall, Mauritius Overview
Mauritius is home to one of the world’s best mysterious phenomena. A spectacular illusion, the underwater waterfall is located off the coast of Le Morne Brabant. The scene is an illusion, created by sand and silt on the ocean floor, that runs off in a way as if the water is pouring down. It also looks as if the entire island is being sucked down a massive drain. The sand from the higher coastal shelf is pulled down by the ocean currents into deeper waters, making the water infused with sand.

The Story Behind Mauritius’ Stunning Underwater Waterfall
Planning a visit to Mauritius? The island’s magical underwater waterfall should be the first stop on your itinerary.
Mauritius is a slice of heaven I’ll always want to return to (and, full disclosure , I quite literally just got back from a trip).
This peaceful island nation showcases the finest of mother nature, from luscious rainforests teeming with wildlife to sun-kissed beaches and oceans rich in marine biology.
And, of course, world-famous waterfalls – but I’m here to talk about one in particular.
Let’s dive into why you NEED to visit Mauritius’ underwater waterfall.
Why Visit Mauritius’ Underwater Waterfall?
Sure, waterfalls are pretty to look at. But an underwater waterfall that is an optical illusion (more on that later) will blow your mind.
The underwater waterfall in Mauritius is a fascinating phenomenon that draws hordes of travellers from all over the globe. It’s stunning beyond measure but it’s really its rarity that makes it so special. Besides the bragging rights, you’ll have gorgeous photographs to feed your social media.
Viewing it from above will have you in awe but, like most natural wonders of the world, nothing beats seeing it up close.
There’s also a story behind the waterfall, a local myth intertwined with this geological wonder, creating even more curiosity and mystery surrounding its existence.
Legend says that after the 1835 abolition of slavery, authorities were to inform a group of escaped slaves of their newfound freedom. However, there was a miscommunication, and the enslaved people chose to dive off a cliff to their demise rather than accept slavery.
But what’s mind-blowing is that this mass suicide occurred before discovering the underwater waterfall, leading many locals to believe that the two were somehow connected.
Background and Information for the Underwater Waterfall, Mauritius
Sorry to spoil the illusion, but the underwater waterfall of Mauritius is not even a waterfall. It’s a natural optical illusion caused by moving sand — it’s easy to fall for it, though (get it?).
To give a straightforward explanation, the ocean currents collect and drive coastal sand and silt off Mauritius’ southern tip into the ocean’s depth. This creates an “underwater waterfall”. It’s a dramatic scene that resembles a part of the island sucked down a drain.
Now I’ve got that out of the way, let’s take a deep dive into the nitty gritty.
Where is the Underwater Waterfall in Mauritius?
You’ll find the underwater waterfall on the southern coast known as Le Morne Peninsula.
How Deep is the Underwater Waterfall in Mauritius?
The sand and silt of this underwater waterfall plunge to depths of more than 4000 metres into the oceanic void. Best only to get up close if you’re an excellent swimmer, I reckon.
When is the Best Time to See the Underwater Waterfall?
The best time to view this ethereal site is from September to December when the rainfall won’t be too much of a problem for helicopter rides. And trust me, a helicopter ride is a magical experience.
Can You Swim in Mauritius’ Underwater Waterfall?
Great news – it’s entirely safe to swim in and even surf on these waters. So if surfing or diving in the underwater waterfall in Mauritius is on your bucket list, what are you waiting for?
That said, if you’re not much of a water baby, you can always catch a glance at this beauty from a distance. A popular viewpoint is Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage peak offering an unmatched vista of the majestic underwater falls.
Planning Your Visit to Mauritius Island’s Underwater Waterfall
Mauritius waterfall underwater: on a tour .
If you haven’t figured out how to spot the underwater waterfall in Mauritius yet, you’re not alone. But, I’m sorry to say that you can’t view the underwater fall from the beach or by boat. And you can’t really see it by swimming or surfing, either.
This leaves you with few options to witness its beauty up close. And one of those is by taking a guided hike up Le Morne Brabant , as I mentioned before.
The only other option is a helicopter ride above the Le Morne Peninsula. You’ll have a bird’s eye view of the breathtaking motion and hues of blues of the cascading wonder. You can organise this memorable moment right here .
Note that touring with a helicopter over Mauritius’ underwater waterfall can be pricey but a memorable experience nonetheless.
Where to Stay for Underwater Waterfall in Mauritius
Outrigger mauritius.
The Outrigger Resort is always my first choice when it comes to where to stay in Mauritius. Situated in the Bel Ombre nature reserve, an area of ridiculous natural beauty, Outrigger blends a laidback stay with sheer indulgence.
The villas are stunning, surrounded by tropical scenery and blessed with an indoor and outdoor shower – which is how you know you’re somewhere a little bit more off the grid.

Visit Spectacular Underwater Waterfall Mauritius
Explore underwater waterfall in mauritius.
If you fly over the gorgeous turquoise waters off the southwest coast of our island, you will notice what appears to be an underwater waterfall in Mauritius . It may appear dramatic, but you can really swim and surf over the ‘waterfall’ below. Here’s what you should know…
Is there an underwater waterfall on Mauritius?
You may have seen numerous waterfalls throughout the world. You may have even witnessed waterfalls tumbling down the beautiful forested slopes of our tropical island.
However, chances are you have not witnessed an underwater waterfall yet.
How does the underwater waterfall work?
Mauritius and its neighbouring islands, notably La Reunion and Rodrigues, formed by volcanic activity beneath the sea.
This occurred around 8 million years ago (Earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old), hence Mauritius is a relatively young island.
Where is the undersea waterfall?
This natural wonder is located southwest of Mauritius, offshore from the Le Morne Peninsula. Another of the island’s greatest attractions is the majestic Le Morne Brabant Mountain, which stands over 500 metres tall and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There is even more fascinating natural activity here thanks to two highly rarely seen plant species: the mandrinette (Hibiscus fragilis) and the national flower, Boucle d’Oreille (Trochetia boutoniana).
How can I view the underwater waterfall?
Hiking up Le Morne Brabant reveals the waterfall’s extremely rocky appearance. From the summit of the 500-meter peak, you’ll have amazing views of the island and the reef that surrounds it. However, only flying over the underwater waterfall allows you to observe its exact formation.
Helicopter sightseeing trips take you high above this natural phenomenon. – Take to the sky for a bird’s-eye view of the Le Morne Peninsula and the dazzling lagoon, as well as the opportunity to try to understand nature’s immense power. You can even charter a private seaplane for the extra benefit of a thrilling water takeoff.

Additional Information about the Sights on the West coast of Mauritius
Underwater waterfall.
The phenomenal Underwater Waterfall in Mauritius is one of the most unique geological formations in the world. Located on the southern-west tip of the island, this dramatic and out of the ordinary geological phenomenon offers an outstanding sight.
Mauritius happens to sit on an ocean shelf raised above seabed level. Off this particular coast, a gradual slope is noticed, abruptly ending in a 4000-meter-deep abyssal drop. Thanks to this marine topography, various shades of blue are visible, due to the constant movement of sand and silt deposits along these slopes. It is this unique harmony of shades which create the wondrous optical illusion known as the underwater waterfall.
Le Morne Mountain
The symbolic Le Morne Brabant is a majestic mountain located in the South Western part of Mauritius, on the Le Morne peninsula. The majestic mountain has been declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO since July 6, 2008 to commemorate the Marronage (runaway slaves) legacy in Mauritius. It is believed that the slaves were committing suicide by jumping off the cliff of the mountain due to the very inhumane treatment they suffered.
Le Morne Brabant is one of the most preserved and wildest mountains of the island. It is a habitat to a very large variety of endemic and narrow-endemic species, such as the rare Trochetia Boutoniana, which is the floral emblem of Mauritius.
Located in the south-east of the island, Blue Bay was declared a national park in 1997. It was then designated as a wetland site under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in 2008.
The marine park is famous for its amazing coral garden, which is home to hundreds of varieties of corals and its lively unique and colorful fauna. Close to the coastline, the site offers ideal conditions for snorkeling with a rich biodiversity as well as calm and shallow sea-water.
Between Le Morne and Baie du Cap is where you will be able to witness the stunning Maconde View Point. It is believed that the name “Maconde” originates from the slavery period, where runaway slaves from the Makonde tribe of Mozambique came to seek refuge. Others believe that it was named after the governor Jean Baptiste Henri Conde, who built an outlook on the cliff.
The winding road along the basalt cliffs with the ocean lapping against the rocks, make for quite a sight and is a popular spot for those interested in watching the ocean swells.
Settled between Souillac and Bel Ombre in the south of Mauritius, Rivière des Galets is popular for its unique beach, featuring thousands of little pebbles.
This scenic spot is a famed tourist attraction, perfect for a relaxing moment in a serene atmosphere as you watch the giant waves breaking on the shore. Instead of the usual white sand, this coastal region boasts polished pebbles that are equally mesmerising.
The village of Gris-Gris is found at the Southern tip of Mauritius. The appeal of Gris Gris lies in its scenery, the high cliffs here drop abruptly to the sea and the bracing winds of the Indian Ocean blow all year round.
Gris-Gris is well known for its sea cliff and this is definitely a sight worth seeing. This part of the island is not surrounded by coral reefs and this is why heavy waves crash directly on the cliffs. At the southern end of Gris-Gris you will have a great viewpoint on the cliffs and will see the squashing of waves against the flanks of the cliffs.
Ile des Deux Cocos
The Ile des Deux Cocos islet is found off the coast of the south east. Rich with native vegetation, the islet is surrounded by dramatic views of the ocean pounding against the reefs and of the mountain range of Mauritius’ east coast.
Its outstanding natural beauty makes it a popular destination for a private island experience, away from this worldly noise. Nestled amongst the trees, lies the magical “Follies” Villa which was built over 100 years ago by Sir Hesketh Bellor.
Ile au Phare
Most commonly referred to as Ile au Phare by the locals, the islet is located on the coral reef in the southeast of Mauritius, in the bay of Grand Port. This rocky islet offers an enchanting panorama, bordered by azure blue waters along with waves crashing on the cliffs.
Ile au Phare is rich in history, classified as a historical monument dating back to the era of colonisation in Mauritius that still prevails. Given that it’s not populated, the wild beauty of the island has been preserved and stands gloriously amidst the Mauritian waters.
Located in the southwest of Mauritius, near the village of Baie-du-Cap, La Prairie Beach is one of many other spectacular beaches in the Savanne district. The huge lagoon is a real treat for the eyes, with multiple secluded corners that allow you to relax & unwind, away from the crowd.
It's hard not to fall in love with such a picturesque beach that emanates big islander vibes. La Prairie owes its name to the grass that grows along the edge of the pristine lagoon. This adds to the beauty and charm of this place whilst offering a postcard worthy view.

Mauritius Underwater Waterfall | The Waterfall Under the Sea
Who doesn’t love waterfalls? Waterfalls are one of those things you always feel you want to see when you’re in its vicinity. There’s a special sense of wonder we humans get when we do indeed stand at the foot of a waterfall, hearing the thunderous crash of water, Earth’s most abundant element.
Standing at the top of one isn’t any less awe-inspiring. The look down can fill you with a sense of vertigo and possibly dread. It’s all about how nature mesmerizes us, though. So imagine the level to which your mind would be blown if you saw a waterfall happening underwater.
To be more specific, I’m talking about a waterfall under the ocean. And such a thing actually exists! Well, sort of. Let’s take a look at the famous Mauritius Underwater Waterfall in the Indian Ocean.
The Underwater Waterfall is a Major Attraction
When you book any of the many incredible all-inclusive trips to Mauritius , chances are you will be offered an opportunity to visit and witness the spectacle that is the famous underwater waterfall in Mauritius.
Tip: If you want some advice on how to find cheap flights to Mauritius or anywhere in the world, check out my ultimate guide to finding cheap flights.
The incredible phenomenon is caused by the volcanic island’s geological foundations, which are briefly explained below. Full disclosure up front: Although it is referred to as a waterfall, it isn’t technically a waterfall at all. That doesn’t detract from the visually stunning attraction that is certainly a major part of the nation’s major attraction list.
What’s more, you may have the impression from images that it would be extremely dangerous to find yourself in the water by this ‘waterfall in the ocean.’ Rest assured, it is no more dangerous than being closer to the coast on the more shallow peninsula, with the caveat that you might sink a little deeper if ever you did venture towards the waterfall.
There’s no strong current or water flow waiting to drag you down. Assuming you can swim or are on a boat, it’s perfectly safe to be floating above the phenomenon, and the geological nature of the ‘waterfall’ explains why.
What Causes this Underwater Waterfall?
Most of the large land areas on planet Earth were once part of a giant mass and now form various continents. However, some islands were formed independently by volcanic and magma activity pushing up from the sea floor. Mauritius is one such island.
The bit of land that sits above the ocean, forming the island, is only part of the result. This pushing up of volcanic matter created the islands and the immediate plateau around them. These plateaus run off smoothly for a while, but then have a very sharp drop off into the ocean’s depths.
In the case of Mauritius, this surrounding shallow plateau is called the Mascarene Plateau. A few yards off the coast, this plateau simply drops away into the deep ocean. The Mascarene Plateau around Mauritius instantly goes from about 450 feet to over 12,000 feet. This is what happens on the southern side of Mauritius.
This doesn’t only provide visitors with spectacularly unique sights to see. The phenomenon also provides the planet with a somewhat unique biosphere regarding plant and animal life.
A Quick Note on Biodiversity and Volcanic islands
It’s ironic that we usually associate volcanoes with destruction. The truth is that the biodiversity (especially oceanic biodiversity) that appears in the wake of volcanic activity is truly remarkable. Most of the time, these islands also happen to be beautiful, at least after a while!
It’s true that eruptions cause widespread death in the immediate time frame. But typically we find that corals and other sea life flourish in the ensuing years, ironically, due to the island’s high level of endemism, or endemic species of plants and animals.
The Underwater Waterfall in Mauritius Isn’t the Only One
For the record, such an underwater waterfall can exist wherever volcanic islands are on the edge of such a plateau. Another famous example is The Denmark Strait Cataract, which happens to be the highest (or “deepest”) such waterfall in the world.
The Geological Explanation
It’s worth knowing that this type of geological structure is usually relatively new to the planet. Scientists estimate the Mascarene plateau islands are only between ten and eight million years old, making them some of the newest on the planet.
‘Waterfalls’ like the one in Mauritius occur when an island sits at the edge of such a plateau. However, the Mauritius waterfall is quite unique in that it doesn’t have a particularly strong flow of “just water” from the plateau.
Why is the Underwater Waterfall Unique?
First, let’s in no way detract from how amazing the ‘waterfall’ is. If it looks like a waterfall and acts like a waterfall, we could be forgiven for thinking of it as a waterfall (even if it isn’t). Here is the explanation for why it isn’t technically a waterfall.
A waterfall typically has water moving from the point of elevation to a lower point, dropping off the side of a cliff, mountain, or hill. To some degree, this is partially true of most underwater waterfalls, too. The main difference is that usually, the water movement has to do with varying temperatures and currents. In the case of Mauritius, even this is not entirely the case.
In simple terms, water currents moving across the Mascarene plateau create a movement of sand and sediment that similarly seems to flow into the abyss. As the current and sediment drift beyond the volcanically formed coral reefs and into the deeper sections, it creates an optical illusion of a waterfall, albeit below the surface of the ocean.
This makes it different even from the waterfall in Denmark. That waterfall is simply colder water moving into warmer water without the added visual element of the sediment and sand creating the spectacle.
Additionally, the Mauritius crevasse is horseshoe-shaped and oddly visually familiar, much like many of the waterfalls found on land.
How Can You See It?
If there’s a caveat to the underwater waterfall, it’s that it can only be seen from the air at a certain angle. Sadly, it’s not really possible to observe when you’re in the ocean itself, whether swimming, paddling, or on a boat.
Your best bet is to take an aerial excursion by way of a plane or similar. You can also windsurf on a good day—and there are many good days in Mauritius.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
The incredible biodiversity and biosphere were mentioned earlier. If the waterfall itself isn’t reason enough to visit this beautiful area, consider that the Le Morne Brabant area (which contains the waterfall and more) is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site .
There is an additional historical reason for the area being significant in world history. The geography of the area, including the nearby mountains, provided a safe haven for escaping slaves during the era of colonial slavery.
Quick Details: Mauritius Underwater Waterfall FAQs
Here’s a quick roundup of some of the common questions people ask about the underwater waterfall in Mauritius.
Where Can You Find This Underwater Waterfall?
The waterfall is located in the Le Morne Brabant, specifically in the Black River district of Mauritius.
Tip: If you’re in the Black River area, consider a Dolphin Swim and Whale Watching excursion by speedboat. It’s a great way to experience some of that unique ocean life in the area yourself.
How Deep is the Waterfall?
The Mauritius island underwater waterfall drops to around 2.5 miles below the surface of the water from around 450 feet at the lip of the plateau.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
The Mauritius summer peak period runs between October and April, with November to February being the peak. This is probably the best time to enjoy the whole island, as well as a visit to the falls.
How Should You See the Waterfall?
Seaplanes can be chartered in the lagoon, but the best way is to include it as part of an all-inclusive tour of the island. For the record, CNN lists the waterfall at the top of its list of must-see things in Mauritius .
Side note: The Black River Gorges National Park also hosts another famous waterfall, this time more conventional and above water. Known as the Chamarel waterfall, it sits in the nearby rainforest. Why not make a day of it and visit both?
Final Thoughts
It is difficult to describe the brilliant spectacle of the underwater waterfall on Mauritius island. Simply put, the view from the air above is truly unique and unforgettable. Never mind that it is, technically speaking, an optical illusion and not at all a waterfall.
The fact of the matter is that nature has provided something that the planet as a whole can treasure. The bizarre and beautiful sight that is Mauritius’ underwater waterfall should be on the bucket list of anyone visiting an Indian Ocean island.
