The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Sky sails to the Mediterranean, Europe, Central America and more. The ship also offers world voyages.

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.

Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have the same great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

Silver Moon

Cruisers seeking an intimate experience should consider booking a trip aboard Silversea's Silver Moon, one of the line's newest ships. Debuted in June 2021, Silver Moon accommodates just 596 passengers. And with 411 crew members, travelers can expect an attentive experience.

One standout amenity is the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) program. The dining experience aims to introduce passengers to their destinations through food. On board, the S.A.L.T. Lab offers travelers the chance to participate in tastings and workshops, while the S.A.L.T. Kitchen provides a unique dining experience. On shore, foodies can book special cuisine-focused excursions through the program. Not an adventurous eater? Not to worry. Silver Moon boasts seven additional eateries serving everything from pizza to tapas to grilled meat and fish.

Following a delicious meal, travelers will have access to a wealth of amenities, including the spa, a pool, several whirlpools, lounges and a fitness center. When evening rolls around, cruisers can press their luck at the casino or catch a live show.

As with other Silversea ships, Silver Moon boasts all-suite accommodations, ranging in size from 334 to 1,970 square feet. Each suite boasts butler service, marble bathrooms, free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, minibars and large windows. Plus, you'll get a welcome bottle of Champagne. Upgraded staterooms may include multiple bedrooms, sitting areas and bathrooms; espresso machines; daily canapes and private balconies.

Silver Moon is set to explore a variety of regions, including Europe, Africa, Central America and Asia. The ship also completes transoceanic voyages.

Carnival Radiance (previously Carnival Victory) set sail in December 2021 after a full transformation. The ship, which holds 2,984 guests at single occupancy, 3,873 guests at double occupancy and 1,108 crew members, boasts plenty of fun indoors and outdoors for cruisers of all ages.

Carnival Radiance features a ropes course, waterslides, a mini-golf course, dive-in movies in the evening and a sports area for activities like soccer, basketball, volleyball and boxing. The ship also offers a kids club for youths ages 2 to 17. The pool is surrounded by lounge chairs – perfect for relaxing – and those seeking additional quiet space can spend some time at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat. Inside, the spa, the piano bar, the comedy club and the performance event venue, which features musicals, concerts and more, round out some of Carnival Radiance's most popular offerings. Dining options (14 eateries in total, including a Chef's Table experience) abound on this ship as well: Cruisers can enjoy casual fare at Big Chicken or Guy's Burger Joint, or sit down for a more upscale meal at Cucina del Capitano, Bonsai Sushi or the Steakhouse.

Staterooms aboard the ship include Interior (porthole and picture window choices are available), Ocean View, Balcony and Suite category options. Carnival Radiance sets sail from Los Angeles to destinations in Hawaii and Mexico .

Carnival Panorama

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests at single occupancy, 5,146 guests at double occupancy  and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Meanwhile, Family Harbor accommodations are located next to the ship's Family Harbor Lounge and afford guests special perks, such as a free evening of babysitting and complimentary kids meals in the onboard specialty restaurants.

Seabourn Quest

Seabourn Quest, which launched in June 2011, is one of the smallest ships in Seabourn's fleet. It can fit up to 458 passengers and about one crew member for every cruiser. It is virtually identical to the Seabourn Sojourn and Seabourn Odyssey .

Seabourn Quest differs from the line's newer ships in terms of accommodations, as it offers some Ocean View Suites with porthole windows instead of verandas. However, all cabins still come equipped with amenities like flat-screen TVs, designer toiletries, personalized stationery, Egyptian cotton linens and in-suite bars stocked with your preferred refreshments.

Outside your suite, you can enjoy a range of pursuits, such as spa and salon treatments, free fitness classes, a nine-hole putting green and two swimming pools. Additionally, Seabourn Quest offers complimentary water sports equipment rentals at its Watersports Marina in select destinations.

Once you've worked up an appetite, sit for a meal at one of the ship's four restaurants, including the main dining room and The Grill, a steakhouse helmed by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller. And for evening entertainment, you'll have access to a variety of bars, plus a casino, a dance club and the Grand Salon, where cabaret performances, comedy shows and more are hosted nightly.

Quest sails to and from destinations around the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Northern Europe and more.

As part of Oceania's fleetwide revamp, Regatta was completely redesigned in September 2019. Passengers in Veranda Staterooms and Suites will enjoy verandas and spaces ranging from 216 to 1,000 square feet, while Inside and Ocean View cabins are smaller. The ship now offers solo staterooms for those who are traveling alone. No matter which you choose, all staterooms are equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, plus all-new furnishings and marble bathrooms.

The 670 passengers will receive Oceania's signature service, with 400 crew members catering to guests' needs. Recent cruisers noted they rarely encountered crowds in the ship's public areas. The atmosphere aboard Regatta is decidedly adult, as the ship caters to older, affluent cruisers.

Entertainment varies from nightly musical performances to table games at the casino. Dining is also diverse: Regatta offers five venues ranging from the formal dining room to a casual grill. All-new plant-based menu items are also available.

Regatta sails to destinations in Mexico, Asia, Australia and more.

Seabourn Sojourn

The 458-passenger Seabourn Sojourn debuted in June 2010 and features all-suite accommodations. About 90% of the suites offer verandas, and all accommodations provide 24-hour room service, flat-screen TVs, bathrooms with dual sinks and a separate living area and bedroom. What's more, cruisers are welcomed with complimentary Champagne upon arrival and can enjoy a fruit basket that's refreshed daily. A suite stewardess is assigned to each cabin to assist with requests as well. Sojourn is virtually identical to its sister ships, Seabourn Odyssey  and Seabourn Quest .

Outside the rooms, travelers can gamble at the casino, work up a sweat in the fitness center or relax at the spa. Those interested in soaking up the sun can snag a spot by one of two swimming pools or enjoy one of five hot tubs. Cruisers can also fuel their competitive juices with a round of shuffleboard or golf on the nine-hole putting green. When anchored, vacationers in select destinations can take advantage of the ship's water sports equipment, such as kayaks and paddle boats.

There are four dining venues to choose from on the Seabourn Sojourn, including casual and fine dining options. In the evening, cruisers can enjoy cocktails at one of the bars or dance under the stars. The ship's nearly 1-to-1 crew-to-passenger ratio means cruisers should expect exceptional service.

Sojourn sails to destinations in the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and the Mediterranean, as well as some trans-Atlantic sailings.

caribbean cruise from los angeles

Seabourn Encore

Like its sister,  Seabourn Ovation , the 600-passenger Seabourn Encore is one of the larger ships in the fleet. The ship debuted in December 2016 and maintains a roughly 1-to-1 crew-to-passenger ratio.

Every cabin in the all-suite Seabourn Encore has a veranda with ocean views. Additionally, all accommodations offer designer bath products, a stocked bar, a flat-screen TV, personalized stationery and complimentary 24-hour room service. All guests are greeted with Champagne and fresh fruit upon arrival.

As for activities and onboard amenities, Seabourn Encore features two swimming pools, five outdoor whirlpools, a spa and a fitness center with complimentary fitness classes. Once nighttime falls, cruisers can choose from a variety of indoor and outdoor bars. There are six eateries available, including The Grill by Thomas Keller and a sushi restaurant. During their downtime, guests will enjoy The Retreat, a serene sanctuary with comfortable lounge chairs.

Seabourn Encore sails throughout the Mediterranean, Asia and Africa.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The Sushi restaurant, exclusively found on Seabourn Encore and Seabourn Ovation, is small and operates on a first-come, first-served basis without reservations. It's advisable to arrive when it opens to secure a table. – Dana Freeman, Contributor

Los Angeles

caribbean cruise from los angeles

Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the most populous city in the Western United States. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the largest and most populous city in the state of California and the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Nicknamed the "City of Angels" partly because of its name's Spanish meaning, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis. The city is also one of the most substantial economic engines within the nation, with a diverse economy in a broad range of professional and cultural fields. Los Angeles is also famous as the home of Hollywood, a major center of the world entertainment industry. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The Los Angeles combined statistical area also has a gross metropolitan product of $831 billion, making it the third-largest in the world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the event for a third time in 2028.

Hey, there's more to this town than it just being the finish line for the annual Newport-Ensenada Race! The City of Ensenada has completed a total renovation of Primera, the main street downtown. Enjoy a stroll down the cobblestone sidewalk complete with outdoor cafes, interesting shops, strolling musicians and street vendors. The malecon (harbor boardwalk) renovation was completed last year and provides a beautifully landscaped walk along the harbor front to the Ventana Del Mar Plaza with its huge Mexican flag. From there, you can look across the rio at the new small craft harbor nestled in the middle of the new cruise ship docks. It will be interesting to watch the progress on this new endeavor. The story is that in order to expand the cargo port on the north side of the harbor, the developers had to relocate the passenger ships' dock and provide some type of recreational asset for the city. It looks to be a good solution. Ensenada is also a swell place to take possession of your new boat (more on that later), get a new bottom job for your old boat or set as your destination for an extended coastal cruise, a fun weekend road trip or the start of some long distance cruising! The people of Ensenada are trying hard to improve their city, both for turistas, a big part of their income and for themselves and their families. We have seen improvements which are good, and yet some loss of the "Mexico-ness" in some of the tourist areas. We have met a lot of the residents and business people and want to thank them for their hospitality. As visitors, it is our obligation to live up to the Bienvenidos and the Mi Casa es Su Casa that have been extended to us.

Top things to do in los angeles, play on the santa monica pier.

For a fun-filled day in Los Angeles, head to Santa Monica, a scenic neighborhood that is home to a long pier stretching out into the Pacific Ocean. Stop by Santa Monica Pier’s carnival, where you can ride the Ferris wheel, try your hand at carnival-style games, and grab a bite to eat. From the pier’s vantage point, you’ll be privy to gorgeous views of the ocean and California’s coastline.

Explore Malibu

Escape the hustle and bustle of LA and drive up the coast to the laid-back city of Malibu. Enjoy lunch at the end of the historic Malibu Pier at a farmhouse-style restaurant, then head down to the sand and check out Malibu’s gorgeous and rugged beaches, known for their light golden sand and rocky formations that jut out into the ocean.

Take a Picture of the Hollywood Sign

A trip to Los Angeles isn’t complete until you see the city’s famous Hollywood sign. Set high up on a hill overlooking the city, the Hollywood Sign is visible from several vantage points. If you’re looking for a way to get closer, go on a shore excursion that includes a nearby photo op, where you’ll be able to pose in front of the iconic sign.

Where should I eat in Los Angeles?

Cruises from Los Angeles give you the opportunity to try some of LA’s fantastic restaurants before you set off on your vacation. Los Angeles is full of trendy restaurants that are run by some of the most renowned chefs in the world. Look for authentic Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood, including everything from fish tacos to locally caught and exquisitely prepared whole filets of fish at waterfront restaurants. Southern California’s sunny weather and low chance of rain also makes it a fantastic place for outdoor dining. There are beer gardens, patios perched on the beachside cliffs of Malibu, and rooftop bars downtown, where you can enjoy a bite to eat or a refreshing drink under the California sun.

What's the culture and history of Los Angeles?

Los Angeles was originally home to the Chumash and Tongva people. Eventually, the area was claimed by Spain by explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. It wasn’t until 1781 that the city was officially founded by the Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. In 1821, L.A. came under Mexican rule after the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, the city was purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. A boom in the city’s population occurred several decades later when oil was discovered in the region in the 1890s. Today, Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, home to over four million residents. While a large number of the population works in the entertainment industry, L.A. is also the financial and commercial center of Southern California.

Where can I go shopping in Los Angeles?

If you have dreams of sauntering down Rodeo Drive with your arms full of bags, head to the famous Beverly Hills area, which is full of luxury boutiques and designer brands. If you want to do some serious shopping without dropping a small fortune, head to Venice Beach and Santa Monica, where you’ll find an assortment of popular brand names mixed with affordable boutiques and beachwear shops.

How can I get around Los Angeles?

The best way to get around in Los Angeles is by car, as there aren’t many public transportation options that will take you all around the city. The bus system has several routes, but it’s important to account for traffic delays, no matter what form of transportation you choose. Therefore, booking a shore excursion is a smart way to guarantee that you’ll arrive at your ship on time.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The official currency of Los Angeles is the U.S. dollar, and you will find many ATMs all around the city. Tipping 15% to 20% of your total bill is customary for restaurants and taxi service, and most locals leave closer to 20%. It’s common to see a tip jar at eateries and cafes with counter service. Loose change or a small tip isn’t expected, but is often left by locals and appreciated by the staff of those establishments.

This Royal Caribbean International cruise from Vancouver to Los Angeles, California costs under $200 a day and visits San Francisco in September 2024.

Metro Vancouverites can visit some of California's top destinations on a cruise from B.C. to Los Angeles this fall.

Royal Caribbean International's (RCI) six-day Pacific Coastal cruise departs from Canada Place on Sept.22 and visits Victoria the next day before spending a day at sea en route to San Francisco.

After spending the night in San Francisco, guests visit Catalina Island before disembarking the ship in Los Angeles on Sept. 28.

RCI wows guests with a focus on family-friendly entertainment and activities, high-end spa treatments, attentive service, and specialty restaurants.

The cruise ship is the Brilliance of the Seas , part of RCI's Radiance class of vessels that feature everything from a rotating bar with panoramic views to a rock climbing wall soaring 40 feet above the cruise ship deck.

Guests can enjoy three pools and hot tubs, a basketball court, mini golf, outdoor movie nights, eight bars and lounges, a video arcade, and much more.

Cruise from Vancouver to Los Angeles for under $200 a day

RCL is offering 60 per cent off the second person in a stateroom on this sailing as part of its current promotion. For an interior stateroom, this works out to $398 in savings (see slide two).

An interior stateroom for two people costs US$1,497.42 or US$748.71 per person, which converts to approximately C$2,049.85 or C$1,024.94 (see slide three).

The total per-diem, per-person amount is $C170.82 for the six-day cruise. Not only does that cost include your transportation on a beautiful five-star vessel, but it also includes meals, entertainment, snacks, and lodging. The only thing it doesn’t factor in is alcohol, but you may opt to purchase a drink package that can reduce the cost of your spending.

A flight back from L.A. to Vancouver is extremely affordable, with ultra-low-cost-carrier Flair Airlines offering direct, one-way tickets starting at C$47. However, these flights tend to depart before 11 a.m., which doesn't allow much time to get off the ship and go through airport security. It is recommended to stay at least one night or book a flight later at night.

A Flair Airlines flight that departs L.A. on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 10:45 a.m. costs $64, including taxes (see slide four).

‘Avatar,’ ‘Coco’ attractions are coming to Disneyland — and other big news from D23

A twilight scene of a boat ride through a bioluminescent forest

Walt Disney created it. James Cameron will help add to it.

The Disneyland Resort in its seventh decade is getting a new area dedicated to a world of fantasy, this one having originated from the mind of filmmaker Cameron. A long-teased “Avatar”-inspired section is coming to Disney California Adventure. The Walt Disney Co. confirmed the plans Saturday night at its D23 fan convention in Anaheim.

Concept art shown by Disney revealed a water-focused attraction that Walt Disney Imagineering, the division of the company responsible for theme park design, promised would be “dynamic, intense and an emotional experience on a grand scale.”

Imagineering executive Ali Rubinstein said the new area in California Adventure would differ greatly from an “Avatar”-themed land at Walt Disney World in Florida. This one, she said, would draw heavily from the second “Avatar” film, “The Way of Water.” Consider it “an excursion in search of majestic natural wonders that can only be found in Pandora,” said Rubinstein.

In defense of Disney adults

The term ‘Disney adult’ is often associated with an allegiance to a corporation or a refusal to grow up. But maybe the young at heart know something the rest of us don’t?

July 18, 2024

The announcement arrives at a crucial time for the Walt Disney Co. The firm reported lower than anticipated operating income for its parks division in its third-quarter results, with executives attributing the slowdown, in part, to a dip in demand driven by financial stress on consumers. Any drop in attendance at Disney theme parks — global tourist destinations that draw millions per year — raises questions not only regarding public sentiment on the economy, but the affordability and excitement surrounding the parks.

In turn, this D23 convention was seen as crucial in inspiring fan passion for what’s to come. And fans left Saturday’s park-focused presentation with plenty to think about.

Guests on a boat in a Día de Muertos-inspired world.

“It’s kind of overwhelming,” said Matt Reynolds, 31, from Orlando, Fla. “There’s so much information and I’ll have to read over it all and digest it all. I think it’s all very ambitious.”

Throughout the weekend it was stressed that announcements at a parks-focused event Saturday evening at the Honda Center would focus on projects in some stage of active development, including a “Coco”-themed boat ride also destined for California Adventure.

“Disney’s plans are drawn,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, from the arena’s stage. “This means the dirt is moving.”

Disney executives indicated that they were well aware that fans were anticipating relatively major reveals at this D23, especially after the last convention, in 2022, went heavy on potential projects but was light on concrete proposals. A quick sampling of the 12,000 who attended the event found that Disney’s most ardent fans — and often harshest critics — generally had an upbeat response to the shift in direction.

“We got some better announcements than last time. It was more than ‘what if?’ I definitely was very happy with some of these announcements,” said Justin Ramos, 22, from Orlando. “I’d like to see them follow through with a lot of this.”

A battle scene rages between heroes and villains.

D’Amaro said ground would break in 2026 for the “Coco” attraction. He added that the ride would be influenced largely by classics such as the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean, and would feature new animatronic technology.

“We’re bringing our skeletal cast of characters to life in a big way,” he said. “These figures will appear in ways you’ll have to see to believe.”

Locations for the “Avatar” and “Coco” attractions — and what, if anything, they may replace — were not detailed at the Honda Center.

The biggest roar of the night was reserved for a villains-themed land coming to the Magic Kingdom in Florida’s Walt Disney World. The announcements, sprinkled among pop performances of Disney songs from the likes of Rita Ora, Meghan Trainor, Chromeo and more, came quick, and ranged from four new cruise ships to a land with a “Monsters, Inc.” theme for Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. The latter will come complete with a suspended coaster. Elsewhere, look for attractions based on “Encanto” and the “Indiana Jones” franchise to come to Florida resort’s Animal Kingdom.

Two-seater pods that attach to a large arm, lift in the air and rotate.

Much attention, however, was placed on California Adventure.

Imagineering creative Scott Trowbridge said the park’s Avengers Campus would essentially double in size with two attractions in development. One is a previously announced ride featuring the Avengers in battle across the multiverse with King Thanos. The attraction, first announced in 2019, was given a name, Avengers Infinity Defense, and will feature locations such as the Black Panther world of Wakanda, Asgard and New York City. It looks to lean heavily on visual effects interspersed with physical sets.

Another, Stark Flight Lab, is pitched as a testing of new Avengers technology. It’s an amusement-park-like thrill ride, in which guests will sit in two-person pods and then attach to a mechanical arm that will lift them into the air and attempt to simulate sensations of flight. Actor Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Tony Stark for the ride. Ground is set to break on both attractions next year, said Trowbridge.

Animatronic Tiana and friends, including the alligator Louis, serenade guests on a log flume ride.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure’s joyous debut proves it was time for stale Splash Mountain to go

Splash Mountain closed at Disneyland and Walt Disney World in 2023 to make room for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. The ride is a joyful celebration.

June 11, 2024

The Avengers ride, in particular, has been a long time coming, having first been unveiled five years ago. Fans are eager for its arrival. “We unfortunately are Disney World people, but we want to be Disney California Adventure people because of all of the Avengers Campus and the ‘Coco,’” said Julie McGrady, 31, of Nashville.

Disney did place a high significance on this D23 when it came to the Disneyland Resort. The birthplace of the modern American theme park turns 70 in July 2025, and recently after a multiyear process the company won approval from Anaheim to significantly expand its parks, hotels and shopping districts.

Guests on a suspended coaster soar alongside "Monsters, Inc." characters.

The project, known as DisneylandForward, came with a pledge, as the Walt Disney Co. has promised to spend a minimum of $1.9 billion on Disneyland attractions, lodging, entertainment, shopping and dining in the next 10 years. Additionally, Disney has stated it will be doubling down on its theme parks, as it has guaranteed to spend $60 billion throughout the next decade in its experiences division, with at least half of that total dedicated to parks and resorts, according to a recent SEC filing .

At a media event preceding D23, Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock said DisneylandForward gave the resort the “possibility” of expanding its footprint by approximately 50%, largely by rezoning parking districts.

“ Turbocharge ” has been the buzzword used by top Disney brass in relation to its proposed park expenditures. If there’s a cohesive thread to Disney’s intended additions and changes over the coming years, it is this: intellectual property.

Also on the docket: Two new “Cars” rides for Florida’s Magic Kingdom, one pitched as an off-road rally and the other as a tamer, family-friendly attraction; a “Lion King”-focused area for Disney Adventure World at Disneyland Paris with a centerpiece flume ride; and a Spider-Man roller coaster for Shanghai Disneyland.

Mountains, an ominous castle and green-tinted water.

A villains-themed land seemed to generate so much curiosity because it deviates slightly from this path. Though the land will no doubt feature many recognizable characters, it also offers Imagineers an opportunity to expand on larger themes rather than simply build on known stories. “‘Happily ever after,’” D’Amaro said, “may just feel like a distant dream.”

“I feel like we were just waiting for that. We get touches of villains during events at the parks, but they don’t have nearly as much representation as needed,” said Ashton McGrady, 32, also of Nashville. “I think it’s cool to show the fairy tale princess side and then get to see the villain side.”

Coming to the Disneyland Resort much sooner will be a new show for the Main Street Opera House to tell the story of Walt Disney. The show, dubbed “Walt Disney – A Magical Life,” is dedicated to the park’s patriarch and will debut next year for Disneyland’s 70th anniversary.

Disney’s streaming business turns a profit. But parks show signs of trouble

Disney notched a milestone in its streaming business: It reported profitability across its Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ services for the first time.

Aug. 7, 2024

“This attraction will imagine what it would have been like to be in Walt’s presence,” D’Amaro said.

The robotic show will be set in the Disney founder’s studio office, and D’Amaro said great care is being taken to bring him to life, hinting that it will also feature what’s long been said to be his favorite song: “Feed the Birds” by the Sherman Brothers.

“It will feature for the first time an audio-animatronic figure of Walt,” he said. “We’re advancing the technology he pioneered 60 years ago with Abraham Lincoln.”

Concept art of Walt Disney leaning in an office.

Nostalgia fans and Disneyland purists need not worry. The Opera House’s current show, “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln,” will play in rotation with the Disney-focused show after the latter has its initial run.

The following year in 2026 will see Disneyland’s Millennium Falcon: Smugglers’ Run in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge receive an updated interactive storyline. Timed to the film “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” the ride will be tweaked to feature a mission starring the bounty hunter and his little pal, colloquially known as “Baby Yoda.”

Both reflect an evolving approach to Disney’s theme parks.

Disneyland, Walt’s original park, was pitched as a place dedicated to “the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy.” Today, the parks are viewed more as platforms, spaces designed to shift and pivot around the popular franchises of the moment.

The fact that Abraham Lincoln will now share space with Walt Disney doesn’t erase the original intent, but is indicative of a more inward-looking Disney, one dedicated as much or more to its own myths as those of America, fairy tales and pop culture.
