Now that my hair is getting longer, I'm back to using Eco Styler Olive Oil to seal my ends. I haven't figured out what I'm doing wrong when I use it throughout. I don't get flakes, but my hair lacks its usual sheen.

LOVE Eco styler! The olive oil and the argan oil ones are my fave. I use the olive oil for my edges and mix it with my whipped shea butter for twist outs and braid outs. I use the argan oil one when I do extensions like my marley twists. It provides a strong enough hold to keep my marley twists from unraveling, but soft enough so that they're not dry or stiff. I've never tried the Krystal gel...can't deal with any sort of flaking and the olive oil lays down my edges just fine.

I may try the argan oil get because I like to do wash-n-go but I can't stand that gel hard feeling. I need that fluff for my afro. I've never even seen the Krystal gel though. Weird! Nice review.

I've tried the Argan Oil Gel because it was the only one available in Abu Dhabi. It's not my favorite because it flaked and it became crunchy.

I used to end up with super hard hair no matter what gel I used before I began trying that method before applying the gel. While my hair is wet, I apply oil, a small amount of leave in and then the gel. It ends up being a lot softer with no flakes. :-)

With your hair texture, you may really like the Argan Oil. My mom has Type 2/3 hair and it works very well for her. I don't count it strange that you haven't seen Krystal, lol. In fact, I had never seen it until a year or so ago when I asked someone what could hold down my baby hairs. LMBO!

What kind of hair type do I have? I still dont know?!?

LOL! I would say you are a 3. From what I've seen of your hair, possibly 3A or 3B. That would be my guess. It it helps, I'm more like 3C/4A.

Have you ever used the LOC method before applying the gel? While my hair is wet, I apply oil, a small amount of leave in and then the gel. This helps it looks shiny and not flake as well.

I don't really have a preference but I love to use the Argan Oil Gel when doing sleek styles like buns, etc. Since my hair is coarse it provides a nicer hold and sheen unlike the other gels.

I prefer the Olive Oil. Works well with my 4c hair for puffs and on my edges.

I have only used the Argan Oil version, and I like it! I use it for my edges and for sleek high and low buns. I have to reapply by the 3rd day. I would like to try the olive oil version to see if I can do my first wash n go, which I still believe is a definitely NO for me! lol :)

Can anyone tell me my hair type??? I think it is 4B but I am not sure! Also, best way to combat frizz??? Please thanks much!

Bolshoy Sampsonievsky Prospekt

This avenue is located in the northern part of the city in the Vyborgsky District. It was originally part of the highway to Vyborg, located 174 km from St Petersburg. The avenue got its name in 1709 when the original, wooden St. Sampson Cathedral was built, among the very first churches in St. Petersburg. In the 1730s, the cathedral was rebuilt in stone presumably under the supervision of architect Domenico Trezzini. The beautiful azure and white cathedral has since then remained virtually unaltered. Opposite the church today is a monument to Peter I, the founder of St. Petersburg and commissioner of the original cathedral.

In the 19th century, the avenue was built up with residential and office buildings. Barracks, hospitals, and factories also rose along the avenue during this time. A vast area of several blocks, from the banks of the Neva River to Ulitsa Komissara Smirnova is taken up with the Military Medical Academy - Russia's first institution of higher education for military physicians. At different times, dozens of prominent doctors, including James Villa, Sergei Botkin, Vladimir Bekhterev, Ivan Pavlov, Nikolay Pirogov, and Ivan Sechenov, worked here. In front of the Academy are monuments to Botkin and Villa as well as a statue of Hygieia - the goddess of health.

In the 1830s, in the area between Ulitsa Tobolskaya and Ulitsa Litovskaya, the Moscow Guards regiment was garrisoned. The red buildings of the barracks were designed by two eminent classical architects, Alexander Shtaubert and Vikentiy Beretti. In 1901-1903, the regimental Church of St Michael the Archangel was built, but this tall church in the Russian Revival style was demolished in the 1930s. Another church built here during that time, the St. Anna Kashinskaya Church, had a better fate and can still be seen today.

Factories, however, were what dominated most of Bolshoy Sampsonievsky Prospekt. The first was the Sampson Cotton-Spinning Factory, built in 1837. It has not survived, unlike the production and residential buildings of the Ludwig Nobel plant (No. 30). This plant belonged to the famous Nobel dynasty of Swedish entrepreneurs and plant produced steam engines and boilers, gas and kerosene engines, pumps, steel shells and mines. Subsequently, as the Russian Diesel Plant, it became one of the largest heavy engineering industries in the city. Other businesses include the New Lessner Mechanical Plant (No. 66), the Ericcson and Co. telephone factory (No. 60), and the Carr Sugar Mill (No. 24). All of these factories were later nationalized in the Soviet era. The Ericcson factory in particular is a fine example of turn-of-the-century industrial architecture.

In the late 1920s, a group of architects and town planners built a few notable buildings in the constructivist style on the avenue, among them a true masterpiece of the era, the Vyborg Factory Kitchen (No. 45), which was designed as a new way to feed the burgeoning urban workforce, many of whom had none but the most basic cooking facilities in their lodgings. The Volkhov Hydroelectric Power Plant substation (No. 16) is a more modest example of the style. By the beginning of the 1950s, several monumental Stalinist apartment buildings (No. 76, 79 and 108) began to appear in the area.

At the beginning of the avenue, next to the Neva River, two more modern buildings have done nothing for the area's aesthetic standards. Construction of the monolithic concrete block of the Saint Petersburg Hotel in the 1960s entailed the demolition of the Pirogov Medical Museum, a rather beautiful Russian Neoclassical structure by Victor Schroter. Unappealing as the hotel is architecturally, however, it did at least conform to St. Petersburg's strict planning codes for building height in the historic centre. The same cannot be said for the soaring Mont Blanc apartment building (Nos. 4-8), which took the place of three typically elegant turn-of-the-century apartment buildings and is considered one of the most egregious examples of the wide-scale flouting of building and planning regulations by developers over the last two decades.

In Soviet times, the thoroughfare was renamed Karl Marx Prospekt. Three monuments were unveiled along the avenue to Russian heroes of the Second World War: Theodosia Smolyachkovo, who used 126 rounds of sniper rifle to kill 125 Nazis; Alexander Matrosov, who blocked the embrasure of a German bunker with his chest so his unit could advance; and, more controversially, Alexander Marinesko, the captain of the Soviet submarine S-13, which torpedoed the German ship MV Wilhelm Gustloff. The latter was a converted cruise ship being employed to evacuate military personnel and civilians from Poland when it was sunk in January 1945, with the loss of over 9 000 lives.

For those visitors who have the time to explore Bolshoy Sampsonievsky Prospekt and the surrounding area, it is advisable to visit the nearby parks as well: Sampsonievsky Garden, the Forest-Technical Academy Park and the garden at the Military Medical Academy.

A Local’s Guide to St. Petersburg, Russia

Kristina Avdeeva is not just a great travel photographer. She is also a person who, along with her partner, Niko Tsarev, shares her love for the sea and sailing in a project called Sea Soul Diary . Together they travel the world in search of pristine waters and unique sailboats and, above all, dive into the local culture, making every journey a learning experience.

Tell us about your connection to Russia.

Russia is a country with a harsh climate, but with a warm heart. My ancestors were born here; my relatives live here. St. Petersburg has become my second hometown after Moscow; here I found my love. Its proximity to the Gulf of Finland and Lake Ladoga contributed to the formation of a huge number of rivers and canals. This is precisely why St. Petersburg was nicknamed “the Venice of the North.” For me, it is one of the most romantic cities on the planet.

If a friend was visiting for just 24 hours, what would you tell them to do?

Petersburg is beautiful from May to September. It is even better in June, when the nights are short and bright. During the day, you should definitely take a walk along the embankments along the canals toward the Neva, visit the Summer Garden, and in the evening you should jump into a boat, consolidate what you saw during the day now from the water, and see the main magic—the opening of bridges under the sunset sky.

Any hotels and restaurants you could recommend?

St. Petersburg is the gastronomic capital of Russia. Due to high competition, almost every restaurant is very sensitive to service and product quality. It is worth staying in the city center at the Wynwood Hotel . You can choose a room overlooking a quiet courtyard or the embankment of the Griboyedov Canal. From there, a panoramic view of the Kazan Cathedral of the Mother of God and the building of the Singer company opens. What should this person see and visit?

To feel the whole atmosphere of the city, do not be lazy to walk. If you leave the Wynwood Hotel and walk along Nevsky Prospect, then turn onto the Moika embankment, you will find yourself on St. Isaac's Square, where you will be enchanted by the cathedral of the same name. Bypassing it, you will find yourself on the boulevard, which will lead to the island of New Holland—an oasis of local city life with good restaurants, music venues, an open-air cinema, an artificial beach, and shops. 

The key roles of the island's gastronomic life are two restaurants of Matilda Shnurova, who was included in the rating of the best restaurateurs in the world— Cococo Bistro and Cococouture St. Petersburg . Book a table in advance; it is tight here regardless of the season. By the way, Matilda has a third restaurant for healthy-food lovers, which serves sugar-, gluten-, and lactose-free dishes. Bio My Bio is located in the SO/ Saint Petersburg hotel, which is also suitable for city life. It offers views of the Almirantazgo de San Petersburgo and the city's rooftops.

Your favorite neighborhood?

The historic Kolomna District, where we live, is one of our favorite and quiet places. It has beautiful architecture of the 19th century, a lot of greenery, bridges, and is not the most popular place among tourists. The area is bordered by the Admiralty shipyards, which were founded by Peter the Great in 1709. Many seagulls live here, and the engine of shipbuilding machines can be heard. So the sea soul of St. Petersburg makes noise.

Best time to travel to St. Petersburg?

Do not be afraid of winter; come to Peter’s city at any time of the year. Even in winter! Seeing the snow-covered Hermitage and ice drifting in the spring against the backdrop of granite embankments is a little magic that will make you fall in love with this city forever.
