Hallmark Star Trek Keepsake Ornaments Anniversary

When Hallmark Cards included the Starship Enterprise among its Keepsake Ornaments line in 1991 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Star Trek , no one anticipated there might be a second Star Trek ornament to hang along with it—let alone more than 50 of them.

But 20 years later, Star Trek fans continue to add to their trees—and to their collections—ships, scenes and characters from every incarnation of the series and films as interpreted by Hallmark Keepsake Ornament sculptors and artists. To celebrate this milestone year for Trek ornaments, here’s a two-part look at highlights and insights on two decades of Star Trek and Hallmark. Read about the first decade below, and be on the lookout for the rest in part two tomorrow.

1991 —Starship Enterprise was the first iconic non-character to be licensed and produced as a Keepsake Ornament. The ornament’s unexpected popularity also prompted it to be the first Keepsake Ornament to go back into production after selling out in stores well before Christmas. Keepsake Artist Lynn Norton, who sculpted the ornament, says initial concept drawings depicted Santa Claus popping out of a hinged bridge dome and garland draped around the primary hull. A Star Trek fan since the first night of The Original Series broadcast, Norton fought to change the design to be more accurate. He went on to sculpt all but one of the succeeding Star Trek ship ornaments.

1992 —Shuttlecraft Galileo, sculpted by Dill Rhodus, was the first Star Trek ornament to feature an original voice recording. Leonard Nimoy recorded a holiday message as Spock for the ornament, which was featured in the first national television advertisement for a single Keepsake Ornament.

1993 —U.S.S. Enterprise marked Hallmark’s first ornament based on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The NCC-1701-D was the first starship ornament to have lighted nacelles. For whatever reason, photos of this ornament in advertisements and publications tended to be run upside-down. A television commercial for this ornament featured Patti Yasutake as Nurse Alyssa Ogawa asking questions to the Enterprise-D’s computer about the ornament.

1994 —The Klingon Bird of Prey is one Keepsake Ornament that almost didn’t happen. Not only were there initial concerns about producing an ornament featuring such clearly defined wingtip weapons, its design failed initial safety testing as the patented circuitry that Hallmark invented to plug ornaments into light strings produced too much heat inside the small hull of the ship. At the last minute, a talented engineer at Hallmark redesigned the circuitry to comply with UL and still keep the original patent. The newly designed circuit was so efficient that it was later used in all Hallmark lighted ornaments that plugged into light strings.

1995 —Not only was this the first year to feature more than one Star Trek ornament, it was the first to see characters as ornaments with the introductions of Captain James T. Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard. To differentiate the ornaments, Keepsake artists added “props” to each figure (Kirk’s captain’s chair and corridor panels for Picard). Other ornaments included the Romulan Warbird (TNG-era) and a set of three miniature ornaments, The Ships of Star Trek , based on designs in 1991, 1993 and 1994. Full-size combadge pins were manufactured by Hallmark and offered as a free gift to those who purchased all of the Star Trek ornaments that year.

1996 —To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Star Trek , Keepsake Ornaments produced a set based on designs of the 1991 and 1992 ornaments but made from die-cast zinc and electroplated with nickel. A display base for the set featured a recording of William Shatner’s opening narration, making this the first ornament to use a recording from the show itself. The year’s U.S.S. Voyager ornament was the first based on that series. Figure ornaments included Mr. Spock and Commander William T. Riker. Hallmark manufactured an embossed pin with the official 30th anniversary Star Trek logo that was offered as a free gift to those buying all of the year’s ornaments.

1997 —Three ornaments were offered this year, including the first from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the U.S.S. Defiant. Figures were Commander Data and Dr. McCoy, who artists placed on a transporter pad as an in-joke to fans who might know of the physician’s fears of having his atoms scattered across space by the gadget.

1998 —With Star Trek: First Contact being released that year, Hallmark worked in advance of the film to produce an ornament based on the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E. Designs were based on early art that showed the starship’s deflector dish glowing blue, a color that was changed to amber for the final film. The ornament was changed to glow amber just prior to production. Joining the Enterprise-E that year as an ornament was Captain Kathryn Janeway.

1999 —Three of the four Star Trek Keepsake Ornaments this year each represented firsts for the line. Worf was the first figure not to include a prop. U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 was the first to feature a porcelain replica of postage-stamp art. The U.S.S. Enterprise ornament was the first of the line to be made of blown glass. Rounding out the year’s offerings was Runabout—U.S.S. Rio Grande from DS9 .

2000 —This year’s Borg Cube ornament features a recording of a Hallmark sound engineer’s voice synthesized to sound like a Borg communication. While Keepsake Artist Lynn Norton recorded the ornament’s message himself, the engineer’s test recording ended up being the preferred sound sample. Other ornaments for the year were a blown-glass Lt. Commander Worf and a figure of Seven of Nine.

Rumors: 2024 hallmark ornaments at 2024 comic cons and events, 2024 hallmark ornament events.

Hallmark has announced that the will be at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, CA (SDCC) on July 25-28, 2024, The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, CA (D23) on August 9-11, 2024, and the New Your Comic Con in New York, NY (NYCC) on October 17-20, 2024. This news is nothing for Hallmark Keepsake ornament collectors to be overly shocked about, as Hallmark has been making appearances regularly at these events since 2009, where the Gold Lt. Uhura Hallmark ornament and Star Wars Shock Trooper Hallmark ornament set were released.

The BIG news that everyone has been waiting for …

Although we do not (yet) have pictures or “official” confirmation, we do have the list of items that have been rumored to be available at the 2024 Comic Cons and D23 events. These items include:

• Repainted 2023 Mickey Mouse piano
• Funko squid games
• Marvel’s Wolverine (without a mask)
• Star Trek’s U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-B (Nexus damage)
• Sega Genesis (gold edition)
• Star Wars Sand People

As more information is conformed and photos become available, we will update this this article. We have a feeling that there are going to be a lot of very excited and happy Hallmark Ornament collectors this year when they discover this year’s line-up of Hallmark ornaments that will be available at these events. Production numbers haven’t been released yet, but we strongly believe that they will be comparable to past event releases (between 800 to 3500 of each)

The 2024 U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-B Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments

One of the most interesting ornaments from the 2024 Comic Con event is the Damaged U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B. The “regular” 2024 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B ornament , along with may of the other 2024 Hallmark ornaments , is not scheduled for release until October 2024, but the Comic Con version, which is rumored to have damage from when the Enterprise B was struck by the mysterious “Nexus”, and resulted in the perceived death of Captain James T. Kirk, would be available BEFORE the “regular” version. Although the timing of the releases might seem to be a little off, this type of Comic Con ornament is not unprecedented. Hallmark released a battle damaged U.S.S. Kelvin in 2013 , and a battle damaged U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-C in 2017

We are very excited, as we are every year, to see what ornaments will be released at the 2024 Comic Con and D23 events. As always, for those collectors that are not able to make it to these events, The Ornament Factory will be sure to have a limited supply of these rare collectors items available to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to complete their Hallmark ornament collection. Although it comes from multiple reliable sources, this information has not been 100% confirmed yet – but we are FAIRLY certain that the list we have been provided is accurate. When more information is available, this article will be updated.

Growing up my dad would always watch Star Trek, so I watched it with him. I would imagine myself being on Star Trek and riding in the different ships and using the cool machines they had. Here are some of my favorites but you can look and find your favorites here .

Starship Enterprise….

The crown jewel of most Hallmark ornament collections, as well as many Star Trek collections, the 1991 Starship Enterprise is one of the most sought after Hallmark Keepsake ornaments ever produced. Modeled after the U.S.S. Enterprise from the 1960s hit television show, Star Trek, this Hallmark Keepsake Ornament features red and green flashing lights and a bridge light that glows. The timing of the release of this ornament helped to commemorate the twenty fifth anniversary of the original Star Trek television series. When this famous starship was released by Hallmark in 1991, it was the hit of the season, and impossible to locate by most avid Star Trek fans as Hallmark stores across the country sold out almost instantly, making it a highly sought after ornament by Hallmark ornament and Star Trek collectors alike.

Shuttlecraft Galileo….

The follow up to the 1991 Starship Enterpirse ornament, the Shuttlecraft Galileo Hallmark ornament was released in 1992, and was also a huge hit with Star Trek collectors. Not only did the cockpit of the NCC-1701/7 light up, but it also features a special holiday message from the First Officer of the USS Enterprise, Mr. Spock. To hear Spock’s message, “Shuttlecraft to Enterprise, Shuttlecraft to Enterprise. Spock here. Happy Holidays. Live long, and prosper,” press the button on the bottom of the shuttlecraft.

Starfleet Tricorder….

In Star Trek when they go on missions that always take their Starfleet Tricorder with them. Press the button on the ornament to see the screen illuminate and hear dialogue from from the original “STAR TREK” television series! 

My dad has a tree dedicated all of his Star Trek and Star Wars Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments. It is such a cool tree! He has all of these ornaments on it and more. He just added the 2018 Hallmark Ornaments to it. He is going to need a new tree soon with all of those ornaments.

Thankfully it is Friday!!! I am so excited for the weekend! We many fun activities to do for the holiday season. Do not get me wrong, we will still be working to make sure we get all of your orders out. We love our job! I hope you all have a great Friday!

This Hallmark ornament features Lando Calrissian and Lobot from the film Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back . This special two-pack set was revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con this year. Hallmark only produced 2,975 of this rare ornament, so get it now while you still can.

Star Trek: 2018 The Naked Time

This fun ornament features a bare-chested Hikaru Sulu challenging Captain Kirk with a fencing foil. With the push of a button, it also plays the dialog from this unforgettable scene. The ornament comes with batteries, so you can enjoy its fun straight out of the box.

Star Trek: 2018 Lt Arex and Lt M’Ress, SDCC

This Keepsake ornament set features Lieutenant Arex and Lieutenant M’Ress as they are in the animated Star Trek series. This set was also revealed at the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con, and there’s only 2,800 of them in existence. This is a rare one, so get it before it’s too late.

Star Trek Themed Hallmark Ornaments

If you are a Trekkie, or you have someone on your Christmas list who is, now is an excellent time to add to your collection. The Star Trek Hallmark ornaments  collection began in 1991 and has been going strong ever since. The first Star Trek ornament was the 1991 Starship Enterprise Hallmark Ornament . In 2010, due to the popularity of the Star Trek line, Hallmark started the Star Trek Legends series, which began with Captain James T. Kirk as the headliner first in the series.

2018 Revealed…

Those Trekkie fans who can’t get enough have been waiting with baited breath to find out what the new releases for 2018 will be. The word is finally out. The 2018 collection will add six more ornaments to the mix. This year, Hallmark has even added one from the Star Trek animated series.

Star Trek Hallmark Ornaments Released in July 2018

In July of this year, Hallmark released the scene from “ The Naked Time .” This fun ornament depicts a shirtless Sulu fencing Captain Kirk atop the Enterprise bridge. The ornament is a “magic” one and plays the dialogue from the movie, making it even more spectacular. Also, in July, the Starfleet tricorder was revealed from the Original Series. It too is a magic ornament that lights up and plays the original Trek dialogue. The third release in July was the Crossfield-class DSS Discovery, announced and anticipated since September 2017. Lastly, the Constitution-class USS Enterprise was a throwback from the original Hallmark ornament first released in 1991. It is the seventh TOS-Era Enterprise Hallmark ornament.

2018 Hallmark Ornaments at the San Diego ComicCon

Over the years, Hallmark wanted to make something super special for Star Trek, and decided to reserve a few of the Star Trek Hallmark ornaments as convention-only exclusives. For 2018, the ornament will feature the 45th-anniversary commemoration of Star Trek: The Animated Series. It is a two-pack ornament set that contains the alien crew member favorites from the show. Lt. Arex and Lt. M’Ress , the three-armed navigator, are the very first Star Trek Hallmark ornaments fashioned after the Animated Series.

Since the Animated Series ornament set will only be available as convention exclusives and not in Hallmark stores, it will make them some of the rarest and most valuable items in your Star Trek ornament collection for years to come. If you can get your hands on one, you will have a very select piece.

Hallmark is expanding their 2024  Star Trek holiday ornament lineup — which we first told you about back in April — with one more starship this summer: a special convention-exclusive variant of their upcoming  USS Enterprise- B starship.

Debuting at Hallmark’s SDCC booth (#3348) on July 25, this “Nexus Damage”  Enterprise -B variant ornament celebrates the 30th anniversary of  Star Trek: Generations , and is limited to only 3200pc of total production.

Retailing for $35, this will be only available in person at San Diego Comic Con and will not be available through Hallmark’s online store (with small quantities reserved for Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Club members). There will be an allotment planned for each day of the convention… so if you want it, get to Hallmark’s booth ASAP when you get to the convention.

(East Coast fans, you’ll also have an opportunity to get this ornament on site at New York Comic Con in October.)
