In just a few months since reuniting, Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes have become not just the best women’s beach volleyball team in the U.S., but also, arguably, the world.

Cheng and Hughes, former partners who got back together for a 2024 Olympic run, won the World Tour Finals for the biggest title for a U.S. pair since April Ross and Alix Klineman took gold in Tokyo.

The 27-year-old Californians swept reigning world champions Duda and Ana Patricia of Brazil 21-18, 21-16 in Sunday’s final in Doha.

Cheng and Hughes have entered four tournaments since reuniting last fall and won all of them -- once on the domestic AVP tour and now three international events.

They are rolling into the start of the 2024 Olympic qualifying window next week. It’s likely that the top two U.S. women’s pairs across international events over the course of the next 18 months qualify for the Paris Games.

Cheng and Hughes were previously NCAA champion teammates at USC, then the most promising, young U.S. pro team before splitting in 2018. Cheng made the Tokyo Olympics with Sarah Sponcil (lost in the round of 16), while Hughes’ Tokyo bid flamed out when partner Summer Ross suffered a back injury in 2019.

“It was a lot of the unknown and being young and kind of immature and listening to maybe outside forces and not really knowing how to deal with things as well,” Hughes said in October of their past breakup. “We’ve pretty much moved past that in our relationship. Moving forward with one another, we’re completely different players, and we’re a lot more mature. It feels like the right time. The past is past. We’re just moving forward.”

Cheng and Hughes have taken over from April Ross and Klineman as the top U.S. team. After winning Olympic gold, Klineman underwent shoulder surgery in January 2022 and last week announced she is pregnant and may return from childbirth for a “last-second” 2024 Olympic qualifying bid .

April Ross, a 40-year-old with an Olympic medal of every color, last competed in March, then withdrew before June’s world championships, where she was entered with Emily Day , with an unspecified injury. She has not announced if or when she plans to return to competition.

The U.S. earned at least one beach volleyball medal at every Olympics that the sport has been on the program (since 1996), and a men’s or women’s gold at all but one Olympics. Eighteen months out from the Paris Games, Cheng and Hughes are the best hope to keep the podium streak going.

Olympic Beach Volleyball Champions Anders Mol and Christian Sorum capture FIVB World Tour Finals title 2021

Following their triumph in Cagliari the Norwegian pair are now the most decorated European team in the history of the World Tour, as Borger and Sude gave Germany the women's crown again.

Mol Sorum Tokyo

Olympic beach volleyball men's champions Anders Mol and Christian Sorum of Norway were once again imperious in 2021, and rounded off the season with a thrilling victory at the FIVB World Tour Finals on October 10, in Cagliari, Italy .

They defeated Czech Repbulic duo Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner 2-0 (22-20, 23-21) to become the second men’s pair ever to win the World Tour Finals twice .

The match was not without its challenges for Mol and Sorum.

Twice the Tokyo 2020 gold medallists were forced to come from behind in the set to take the crown.

Deep into the first, Perusic and Schweiner looked to be in a strong position, with two match points in hand.

The Dutch duo responded by winning four consecutive points before Sorum spiked the set-winner.

Similarly, in the second set, the Czech couple were unable to retain a hard-fought lead.

At 15-11, the 2021 EuroBeachVolley winners Mol-Sorum turned the tables on Perusic and Schweiner, clawing the score back before then closing out the match – and the final – with a scintillating block handed out by Mol.

Speaking to Volleyball World after the event Sorum said :

“It’s just amazing! The final is always difficult to play and the Czech guys are a good team. They played really strong the whole tournament and deserve to be here.”

“It was a great final and I’m just supper happy to have won it.”

The men's bronze went to Christiaan Vaderhorst and Steven Van de Velde of The Netherlands .

Germany win women's event once again

Karla Borger and Julia Sude won the women's event, making it four wins out of six editions for Germany.

reigning world champions Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Canada claimed silver.

Tokyo 2020 champions April Ross and Alix Klineman of USA took the bronze.

Joining them on the U.S. roster is the duo of  Taryn Kloth   and   Kristen Nuss . Kloth, 27, and Nuss, 26, played on the same team in college and went on to win the AVP Gold Series Chicago together in September 2022.

Team USA Men's beach volleyball roster for the upcoming season showcases a blend of seasoned talent and promising newcomers, including 29-year-old  Andy Benesh  and his partner Miles Partain .

Born and raised in Rancho Palos Verdes, Benesh's journey into beach volleyball began on the sand courts , where he honed his skills during offseason breaks from indoor team sessions. After playing indoor volleyball at the University of Southern California, he decided to continue playing beach volleyball in 2018, per Team USA .

Partain, known for his agility playing for the University of California, Los Angeles, has quickly risen through beach volleyball ranks with impressive performances on the domestic and international circuits.

Once an NBA player , Chase Budinger now shines as a beach volleyball star, pairing with longtime partner  Miles Evans . Budinger competed in the NBA for seven seasons, played on five national teams, one international team, and played a total of 407 games across eight years, per NBC Olympics  before retiring in 2017 to pursue beach volleyball.  Evans, a former coach at the  Jon Lee Beach Volleyball Camp for youth at East Beach, has been eyeing an Olympic spot for 16 years.  The player makes his Olympic debut after playing on the men's volleyball team at UC Santa Barbara.

Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Finals 4-7 Dec 2024

Beach volleyball players jump for the ball

  • ⏱️ 4 days Approximate duration

The Beach Pro Tour Finals are the culmination of the year's Beach Pro Tour which is the worldwide professional beach volleyball tour for both men and women organised by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).

The World Tour was inaugurated for men in 1989 while the women first competed in 1992; the men's and women's final tournaments are normally held at the same venue over the same dates. Winning the World Tour is considered to be one of the highest honours in international beach volleyball, with only the World Championships and the Olympic beach volleyball tournaments being deemed more prestigious.

The Tour Finals are season-ending championships and feature only the top-performing teams during the regular season. The tournament was first held in 2015 and changed to the current format in 2022. The finals for the 2024 tour will be held in Doha, Qatar from 5-8 December 2024.

Tough start in Doha for USA at season-ending Beach Pro Tour Finals

Travis Mewhirter

December 6, 2023

The final event of the season, which is, in some ways — see: financial, with $150,000 to the winning team — the biggest of the 2023 year, could hardly have started worse  for the USA.

The only victory in the five matches played by American teams on Wednesday in the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Finals in Doha, Qatar, came via forfeit, as Switzerland’s Tanja Huberli and Nina Brunner bowed out with a medical injury in their first match.

Other than that?

Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes fell to Germany’s Cinja Tillmann and Svenja Muller (17-21, 22-20, 15-13) in the morning match, allowing a 7-0 run in the third set to flip what once had been a commanding 8-4 lead.

Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth , beneficiaries of the Swiss forfeit in the evening rounds, were stunned by Brazilian late entrants Taina Silva and Victoria Lopes (21-16, 21-18), who are coming off a bronze medal at last weekend’s Nuvali Challenge in the Philippines.

While Nuss and Kloth were able to take the afternoon off, Cheng and Hughes returned to the court and fell once more, to Canada’s Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes (23-21, 21-16).

To cap a fruitless day, Andy Benesh and Miles Partain , playing their first tournament since the World Championships in early October, fell in three to the Czech Republic’s Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner (26-24, 17-21, 15-12).

Andy Benesh-David Schweiner-Beach Pro Tour Finals

To be clear: There is no shame in any loss at the Beach Pro Tour Finals. The field is an assemblage of the top 10 teams in the world, based on the best eight finishes for each team in this calendar year. Benesh and Partain’s loss came at the hands of the World Champions. There is no hanging of the head in the aftermath of that.

But the road gets no easier from here.

Awaiting Benesh and Partain are Poland’s Bartosz Losiak and Michal Bryl, bronze medalists at the World Championships; Qatar’s Cherif Samba and Ahmed Tijan, the 2021 Olympic bronze medalists; and Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Sam Cottafava, who upset Perusic and Schweiner and are coming off a silver medal at the Joao Pessoa Elite16.

Any win is a tremendous win.

No loss is a bad loss.

For Cheng and Hughes, too, the path forward is a difficult one.

Sara Hughes-Brandie Wilkerson-Beach Pro Tour Finals

Their only match on Thursday will be a rematch of the World Championship finals , against Brazil’s Ana Patricia and Duda, the current world No. 1 who claimed both of their matches on Wednesday and now top Pool A. On Friday, Cheng and Hughes will meet Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova, the Latvian duo who won the first Beach Pro Tour gold medals of their careers last weekend at the Nuvali Challenge.

Potentially boding well for Cheng and Hughes is that they’ve been here before. In January for the 2022 Beach Pro Tour Finals they also dropped the opening two matches of pool play. It worked out well enough, with five straight victories, gold medals around their necks, and a $150,000 check to take home. Finishing No. 1 in pool is desirable, of course, for it comes with a bye into the semifinals. But advancing is the top priority when it comes to the pool stages, and Cheng and Hughes are still more than capable.

For Nuss and Kloth, Switzerland’s medical withdrawal is helpful. They have three matches remaining: Thursday morning against Australians Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy in a rematch of the World Championship bronze-medal match, and later that evening against the Netherlands’ Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon in the first meeting between the two teams.

There are no Olympic points on the line, only prestige, and a mighty big check.

Beach volleyball at the 2024 Paris Olympics: U.S. teams, schedule and how to watch

Beach volleyball will be on full display in Paris, with the Olympic women’s and men’s tournaments taking place from July 27 to Aug. 10 at a temporary stadium at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

The United States is the only country to medal in beach volleyball in every edition of the Olympics since the sport was officially added to the Summer Games in 1996.

Defending gold medalists Alix Klineman and April Ross, who won the women’s event at the 2020 Tokyo Games, are not competing in the Paris Olympics. They both became mothers last year, and though they returned to AVP competition in May, they did not have enough international events left to qualify for the 2024 Games.

The U.S. men are seeking their first medal in beach volleyball since Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers won gold at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Who’s on Team USA

The U.S. qualified two teams (the maximum allowed) on both the men’s and women’s sides.

For the women, the No. 2-ranked duo of Taryn Kloth, 27, and Kristen Nuss, 26, were the first U.S. beach volleyball pair to earn a bid to the Paris Games, clinching a spot in March. The two have partnered up since 2021 at LSU, where they went 36-0 in their sole collegiate season together before turning pro. Their 10-inch height difference (Kloth is 6 feet 4 and Nuss is 5 feet 6) is the largest for a U.S. Olympic beach volleyball team, per NBC Sports . Paris will mark the first Olympics for both players.

Kelly Cheng (nee Claes), 28, and Sara Hughes, 29, are the other U.S. women’s duo (ranked No. 3) and are viewed as likely gold medal contenders as the defending world champions. Cheng represented the U.S. at the 2020 Tokyo Games, where she and former partner Sarah Sponcil lost in the Round of 16. Hughes — making her Olympic debut this year — attempted to qualify for the Tokyo Games, but failed to do so after her former partner, Summer Ross, injured her back.

Cheng and Hughes are former USC beach volleyball stars who led the Trojans to back-to-back national titles in 2016 and 2017. After splitting up in 2018, they reunited as a pair in 2022. They won gold at the 2023 world championships in October, beating Kloth/Nuss 2-1 in the semifinal and current top-ranked pair Ana Patricia and Duda of Brazil 2-0 in the final.

For the men’s event, Andy Benesh and Miles Partain ( ranked No. 6 ) clinched their Olympic spot in May. Benesh, 29, and Partain, 22, are the youngest U.S. men’s beach volleyball pair in Olympic history, according to NBC Sports . They finished third at the Elite16 in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on the FIVB Tour in June, defeating Norwegians Anders Mol and Christian Sørum 2-0 in the bronze medal match. Mol and Sørum won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games and sit at No. 2 in the Olympic rankings behind Sweden’s David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig.

The other U.S. men’s spot went to Chase Budinger and Miles Evans (ranked No. 13), who clinched the final bid in June . Budinger — a 6-foot-7 former NBA player — teamed up with Evans last year, and they quickly moved up the rankings. Budinger, 36, retired from basketball in 2017 after seven seasons in the NBA and a year in a Spanish pro league. He debuted on the AVP tour in 2018 and will become the first athlete to play Olympic beach volleyball and an NBA regular-season game, according to NBC Sports. Evans, 34, will also be making his Olympic debut in Paris.

Key storylines

The U.S. holds the most Olympic gold medals in beach volleyball with seven, and Brazil has the second most with three and the most Olympic medals overall in the sport with 13 (the U.S. has 11). The countries are tied for the most Olympic medals in women’s beach volleyball with seven each, but the U.S. women have four golds compared with Brazil’s one. For the men, Brazil leads the Olympic medal count with six (the U.S. has four), and the U.S. has the most golds with three.

Like the Americans, both of Brazil’s women’s teams are in the top five in the Olympic ranking heading into the event, with Brazilians Bárbara Seixas and Carol Solberg Salgado at No. 5 behind Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson at No. 4 — all of which are strong duos with gold medal potential.

For the men, Åhman/Hellvig — relying on their iconic “Swedish Jump Set” — stormed to the top of the rankings, dethroning longtime former No. 1-ranked pair Mol/Sørum in April (Mol had surgery in March to repair a broken bone in his lower leg). Others atop the rankings are Germany’s Nils Ehlers/Clemens Wickler (No. 3), Brazil’s André Stein/George Wanderley (No. 4) and Czechia’s Ondřej Perušič/David Schweiner (No. 5).

Beach Volleyball Pros Andy Benesh and Miles Partain Join Skechers Roster

Elite Athletes to Compete in Skechers Apparel in Paris

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Skechers will be hitting the sand in the City of Lights as American beach volleyball pros Andy Benesh and Miles Partain compete for a medal and glory in the brand’s performance apparel and headwear. Their new game-day uniforms include Skechers-branded hats, tank tops and shorts crafted with innovative and comfortable Skechers performance materials.

“I was raised and played volleyball in LA’s South Bay, steps from where Skechers is based. Having grown up with the brand, it’s fitting that I am taking them with me to Paris and competing for the first time on this global stage,” said Andy Benesh. “Skechers complements our unique style of play perfectly where comfort and performance are key, and they also embody the drive for excellence.”

“It’s amazing to be partnering with a well-respected global brand like Skechers, and it’s a bonus that they understand the beach lifestyle so well,” added Miles Partain. “Their team has been receptive to all our ideas and Skechers is known for comfort—you have to feel good on the sand if you’re going to perform your best, so this was an easy choice for us.”

“Skechers’ headquarters is up the street from where the best beach volleyball players in the world compete at the Manhattan Beach Open every summer. It’s a sport we have been involved with and know well. This partnership marks the first time we are truly a part of beach volleyball through Skechers apparel,” added Michael Greenberg, president of Skechers. “We are honored to be on the sand with two talented athletes who are competing for the first time in these games. We’re working with Andy and Miles to deliver apparel with the same comfort that performs as our footwear that is loved by elite athletes in basketball, soccer and more sports around the world. We look forward to being part of their journey in Paris and beyond.”

Andy Benesh grew up in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA and started playing indoor volleyball at USC before transitioning to the beach in 2018 when he qualified for the AVP draw for the first time. He’s had multiple legendary partners in his first four years in the league before teaming up with Miles Partain. Miles Partain from Pacific Palisades, CA will be the youngest beach volleyball athlete (age 22) to ever represent the United States at the games. Miles is currently on the UCLA Men’s Volleyball team and also on the AVP tour where he was the 2019 AVP rookie of the year and 2022 AVP offensive player of the year. Notable finishes for the pair include gold at the 2023 Gstaad Elite 16 and 2022 BPT Dubai Challenge, and Bronze at the 2023 NORCECA Beach Tour Finals.

Also competing in Paris in Skechers will be golfers Matt Fitzpatrick and Brooke Henderson. Additionally beyond the games, the Skechers team of elite athletes competing in the brand’s performance footwear includes NBA stars Julius Randle and Terance Mann; footballers Harry Kane, Anthony Elanga, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Mohammed Kudus; Major League Baseball players Clayton Kershaw, Chris Taylor, Brendan Donovan, Aaron Nola, and Wade Miley; and pickleball pros Tyson McGuffin and Catherine Parenteau.
