Blockhead is the stage name of James Anthony Simon, an American hip-hop DJ and producer from Manhattan, New York, U.S.

Son to a well-known sculptor and a social worker, Simon grew up in Manhattan, New York and immersed himself in the lyricism and music of hip hop. His first musical endeavour came as the group the Overground where Simon and friends first made music in their early teens. In 1994 Simon enrolled at Boston University, though the producer dropped out after only a year, it was in Boston he met Aesop Rock. Also a student at Boston University, Simon and Aesop Rock began working together after which Simon dropped the idea of becoming an MC and focused his time on producing.

In 1999 Simon made his production debut on the Aesop Rock track “1,000 Deaths” from his “Appleseed” album and produced the majority of his subsequent releases including the album “Float” in 2000, “Labor Days” in 2001 and a number of tracks on his 2002 album “Daylight”. The producer has also worked with the rappers Cage, Hangar 18 and Open Mike Eagle and is a member f the comedy hip-hop group Party Action Committee.

In 2004 Mush Records asked Simon to create an entirely instrumental album and as a result the producer crafted “Music by Cavelight”. After its completion however Mush Records stopped returning his calls and Simon sent into to other labels before Ninja Tune offered to release it. The release has led to a string of similar material including “Downtown Science” in 2005, “Uncle Tony’s Coloring Book” in 2007, “The Music Scene” in 2009, “Interludes After Midnight” in 2012 and “Bells and Whistles” in 2014.

Live reviews

James Anthony “Tony” Simon, also known as Blockhead, is an American hip-hop producer based in Manhattan, New York. He has got a very hefty CV in that he has worked with some huge names in music, working with the rappers, Cage, Hangar 18, Open Mike Eagle and Murs. He is a member of Party Fun Action Committee. Apparently he got his name from the shape of his head which isn’t quite square, but it’s not far off. Tonight he is due to deliver an hour long set compromised of material from his five studio albums, mainly “Interludes After Midnight”, but he brings out his big singles from the last ten years. The gathering get a little bit restless upon the introduction to Alright which was release in 2006, but of course it is just like yesterday to this hip hop hungry audience. “Expiration Date” is another nostalgic trip. It is nice to hear songs exactly as you know them and exactly as you hear them on the recording but sharing the experience with a thousand other like minded people.

Fantastic dude, very friendly and approachable guy, and had fun with a friend that came, drinks were fine and the place was nice. Listening to him and many others for just $15 is so worth it, and getting a Vinyl signed by him was amazing.

Negatives are security that cannot let anyone back in, once we are in, thats it, we can't go out for air or for a snack, I was also disappointed how long it took for Blockhead to play, had work in the morning and had to miss half of his performance.

If he does come back next time, maybe have him perform a bit in the beginning, let others perform, and have him up one last time in the end so I wont miss a thing. Have more seats available, just came out of work that day and had very tired feet and needed to sit somewhere, bar chairs weren't very comfortable, and of course let security let us out for some air if we need it.

This was the second time I've seen this guy, and he absolutely crushed it both times. The opener was so-so, a lot of bass drops, more EDM style bass drops and what have you, did hear some hip-hop influence toward the end which was a nice change.

Then Blockhead went on and turned the Magic Stick into a free-for-all dance party for about an hour. So worth it for $15. Highly recommended. If he comes to town, don't miss it

After seeing him for the first time in 2015, I was hooked! The venue at Sunnyvale was awful and grimy but that didn't take away from the fantastic show this guy put on. Lots of hip hop influences and really great sample work. He makes the music for a fun night of dancing. Definitely recommend and will go to see him any time he's playing local. SO WORTH IT!

Sensational seeing Blockhead, an artist who pursues his craft with such engagement and focus, who produces works so provocative and playful, whose music has such dimension of impressionism (Claude Debussy is up there, bursting with pride), and who takes you on a journey you want to get back on again and again. My favorite artist of the last 20 years.

Blockhead3Ever’s profile image

I've seen Blockhead many times. His music always delivers, but unfortunately the venues sound did not do him justice. I couldn't even stand to watch him preform. I had to stand by the restrooms or off to the side of the stage. I guess I'll be heading to his show's in Austin or Dallas and for sure Los Angeles to make up for the venues short coming.

Good gig; the whole thing started at 20:00, but Blockhead was the last act, and he didn't come on until 00:00 or so. Worth it though, great bloody Friday it was.

Ian Dury's redoubtable band return to pay tribute to their late, great frontman.

Formed in 1977 to promote Ian Durys’ album ‘New Boots and Panties’ on the first Stiff Records tour of the U.K. Chaz Jankel, Norman Watt-Roy, Charlie Charles, John Turnbull and Mick Gallagher became known as ‘The Blockheads’ (a reference to a song on Ian’s album). As ‘Ian Dury & The Blockheads’ they went back out on tour, this time without Chaz Jankel, and in 1978 released ‘What a Waste’ a single that reached number five in the U.K. charts. They were then joined by saxophonist Davey Payne and toured the U.S.A supporting Lou Reed across North America ending with their own dates in California (with backline roadie Pete Rush)

In late 1978 Chaz returned to the fold and composed ‘Hit me with your Rhythm Stick’ with Ian. The band recorded it in The Workhouse Studios, Old Kent Road, London and in 1979 had a number one hit record with it in the U.K. Ian Dury & The Blockheads went on to record the ‘Do it Yourself’ album and toured Europe and the U.K. recording ‘Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3’ in Rome. Released as a single in late 1979 it reached number three in the U.K. charts.

In 1980 Chaz, once again, left the band to pursue solo projects in California and Wilko Johnson joined Ian, Norman, Johnny, Charlie, Mickey and Davey to record and release a third album for Stiff Records called ‘Laughter’ and released ‘I Want to be Straight’ and ‘Supermans Big Sister’ as singles. They toured throughout 1981 in the U.K and Europe, sometimes augmented by Don Cherry on trumpet, ending the year with a tour of Australia.

In 1982 Ian Dury & The Blockheads disbanded and were not to play together again until 1987 when they went out to Japan in June to play three shows in four days, disbanding again until 1990 when the death of Charlie Charles in September of that year re-united them to play two Benefit gigs at The Forum, Camden Town in aid of Charlies’ family. Chaz returned from America and Steven Monti picked up the drumsticks for the hottest ticket in town. The band, now augmented by Merlin Rhys-Jones on guitar and Will Parnell on percussion, recorded a live album ‘Warts & Audience’ at the Brixton Academy in December 1990.

Chaz returned to California and the band toured Spain in January 1991. Once again the band stopped working until August 1994 when, with the return to England of Chaz, the band were invited to play the Madstock Festival in Finsbury Park in August which led to a series of hit and run gigs in Europe, Ireland, the U.K.and Japan throughout the rest of 1994 and 1995. In March 1996 Ian was diagnosed with cancer and, after recovering from an operation, was determined to write another album.

Review: New Kids on the Block triumph with the right old stuff at Mystic Lake Casino

T he Bee Gees and Santana, Tina Turner and Michael Jackson, they are among music's most remarkable second acts. But New Kids on the Block may have experienced the most surprising second act.

Why? Because it involves almost exclusively Day 1 fans who go back to 1988 or so.

Since the NKOTB reunited in 2008, the enduring Boston-launched boy band has steadily played full-house concerts while releasing the occasional new album. On Sunday night, Mystic Lake Casino Amphitheater in Prior Lake was packed, marking the group's eighth Twin Cities show in 16 years. And as they've done every other year, they put on a smartly packaged show that was colorful, high-energy, fast-paced and nostalgic yet refreshing.

The Magic Summer Tour featured all the right stuff — a blizzard of colors in lights, confetti, streamers and outfits, lots of movement more so than dynamic dancing, polished vocal harmonies, sterling lead vocals from Joe McIntyre and Jordan Knight, plenty of abs-showcasing shenanigans from Donnie Wahlberg, and a consistent fan-friendliness.

NKOTB know how to connect with Blockheads — mostly women between ages 40 and 55 — whether it was having a couple dozen women stand in the stage wings, inviting a handful of women to slow dance with them onstage, or running out into the crowd to perform on five separate small platforms. It's the same kind of accessibility that NKOTB offer on their annual cruises.

Wahlberg, 54 — whose popularity as a star of CBS' "Blue Bloods" since 2010 has been a factor in NKOTB continued popularity — served as the principal spokesman in concert. He explained that the quintet called its new album "Still Kids," their first in 11 years, because "That's what we all are inside."

The fivesome, ages 51 to 55, certainly carried on with a kid-like joyfulness and palpable camaraderie, which isn't always the case with a group that been around for nearly 40 years with the same members. And their fans relived their childhoods, dressing up in neon colors (per NKOTB's requests), holding handmade signs and wearing T-shirts professing love for individual New Kids. And, of course, the Blockheads danced, sang along and partied like it was 1989.

Although the 1¾-hour performance without a live band showcased material from "Still Kids" including the Bee Gees-evoking "Summer Love," heyday tunes dominated the set. "Favorite Girl" and "Cover Girl," arrived early, accompanied by confetti and streamers. The galvanizing "You Got It (The Right Stuff)," provided an early peak, as it echoed the Jackson 5 and the Time.

When the New Kids took off 36 years ago, they were dismissed as derivative of classic R&B vocals groups and hip-hop acts. Now history can look back at NKOTB for pioneering the resurgence of boy bands like 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys and reopening the door for white soul singers like Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke.

Knight's performance of the soul ballad "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)," was the perfect marriage of the romantic falsetto of Russell Thompkins Jr. of the Stylistics and the fall-to-the-knee drama of James Brown. It was arguably the night's high point unless you preferred McIntyre's pretty tenor on "Please Don't Go Girl" or the hyped up "Hangin' Tough" mashed up with Queen's "We Will Rock You" as the New Kids romped around in glitzy Boston Celtics jerseys.

Wahlberg dedicated the medley to "our world champion Boston Celtics. Next year, it'll be the Celtics and T'Wolves in the NBA Finals."

Opening was someone who knows something about NBA championships, Paula Abdul, a former Laker Girls dancer and choreographer. Dancing was what Abdul was all about Sunday as she glided across tables, chairs and the stage accompanied by seven dancers.

After her opening "Straight Up," her hit from 1988, a stage hand brought out an oxygen tank with a mask and she inhaled a couple times. "You think I'm kidding? This is 62," she said. Then she continued to dance and lip sync for 30 minutes, requiring the oxygen only one more time.

DJ Jazzy Jeff kicked off the concert by spinning uber-popular tracks like "Uptown Funk" and "Don't Stop Believin,'" which could have been the theme song for the night.
