This makes Geneva one of the more rewarding places for sightseeing, with little time wasted in between. That is why the number of sites you can visit on your one day in Geneva exceeds what is usually possible in other cities, particularly outside of Europe.

Visit Lake Geneva To Start the Day

When it comes to things to see in Geneva, the city’s eponymous lake takes the cake. The sprawling, crescent-shaped Lake Geneva is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful areas in all of Switzerland. Take Some Photos at the Geneva Water Fountain or Jet d’Eau

The Geneva Water Fountain or Jet d’Eau , located at the site where Lake Geneva meets the Rhône river, is among the most recognizable Geneva attractions . When the city hosted the 2008 UEFA Championships, Jet d’Eau was on the city’s official logo. The fountain’s water jet is so powerful that it is visible from almost anywhere in the city, even from the air at an altitude of 10 km. The first Jet d’Eau served an important purpose as a safety valve for the city’s hydraulic power network. The fountain would spout water more than 30 meters straight into the air. Just walk along the waterfront due southwest, you can’t miss it. The iconic Flower Clock was designed in 1955 . The flower bed is designed to imitate both the shapes and the numbers of a clock face. Under the ground, there is a hidden clock mechanism that keeps the clock hands turning, allowing them to show time. The mechanical seconds hand is 2.5 meters long, making it the longest seconds hand in the world . Although it is certainly very impressive, the Flower Clock is not the only one of its kind in the world.

After the first flower clock was erected in Edinburgh, several other similar clocks have appeared in different parts of the world, including Ukraine and Mexico. Visit the Natural History Museum

Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle , located in Parc Malagnou, is the largest natural history museum in Switzerland. You can also get there on foot – it is about 700 meters east of Bourg-de-Four Square. The surrounding park is absolutely beautiful, with several hothouses and an atelier. The museum itself houses exhibitions on geology, human history, biology, science, and local flora and fauna. All of the specimens on display are in excellent condition.

Highlights include taxidermized mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles, as well as a large mineral collection on the top floor. It is a great place for children , who will love the fossils, especially the dinosaur bones. Not to mention the stone which was brought back to Earth from the Moon by NASA’s own astronauts and later gifted to the museum. Best of all, entry to the museum is completely free of charge .

Take a Walk to Promenade des Bastions

Promenade des Bastions is a large open green space and a famous landmark in front of the old University of Geneva building, formerly a multi-disciplinary theological school established by John Calvin. It takes about 15 minutes to get there from the Natural History Museum. If you take the Rue Ferdinand-Hodler and turn onto Boulevard Emile-Jaques-Dalcroze, you will pass in front of the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, the city’s Museum of Art and History.

It is the largest museum in Geneva, with prehistoric items, cannons, suits of armor, old tools and machines, and even Egyptian mummies. The art section houses both classical and modern paintings. If you have the time, you can check out this museum, as well. Entrance is free on first Sundays of the month. Franz Liszt and Marie D’Agoult’s House of Love is in the immediate vicinity, on Place Franz-Liszt 1204 .

Explore the Promenade des Bastions & Reformation Wall

Promenade des Bastions is a lush park with 6 giant chess boards, a botanical garden, a children’s playground, and lounge chairs where you can relax for a little while after sightseeing. The park is bordered by the university building, the renowned Café Restaurant du Parc des Bastions, the Palais Eynard (city government office), and the Reformation Wall. The wall is a large monument honoring the Protestant Reformation and its key figures. The founders of the Reformation are represented as huge statues and bas-reliefs protruding from the wall. You may recognize John Calvin, Théodore de Bèze, John Knox, and William Farel, occupying the central position in the wall, a metaphor for the instrumental role they played during the tumultuous times.

Take the Tram to Parc de I’Ariana

Parc de I’Ariana , the last stop in this guide, is the only major attraction not located in Geneva Old Town. Getting there from Promenade des Bastions on foot would take 40 minutes, which makes taking the tram a much more attractive option. You can take the tram from Plainpalais to Collège Sismondi (8 stops). Parc de I’Ariana is a beautiful park with the magnificent Palais des Nations at its center.

The Palais des Nations is a sprawling United Nations office complex , notable for its gorgeous white marble façade and numerous statues (e.g. Statue de Gandhi), museums, and restaurants that surround it. The biggest attraction, however, is the Broken Chair , a huge wooden sculpture which is a symbol of peace and protest against land mines and cluster bombs. The legendary Swiss artist Daniel Berset designed the statue, and it was constructed by carpenter Louis Genève, who used up 5.5 tons of wood to get it finished. The chair was commissioned in 1996 and erected in August of 1997.

While you can expect to see the students working in there, they are held to a higher standard than service staff anywhere else in the city. The restaurant is very popular for business lunches and apparently more than good enough for United Nations diplomats. The menu changes every 6 weeks, but frequently gets top grades from gourmets visiting the restaurant. More than anything, the place is beautiful both on the outside and on the inside, and it feels almost like a warm, homey dollhouse.

Return Downtown for a Couple of Drinks

If you want to experience Geneva’s nightlife, make your way back downtown , where most of the city’s best nightclubs and live music venues are located. One of them is La Bretelle Bar Associatif , a friendly, charming bar with tasteful vintage furniture and a tempered retro feel. With a steady influx of new local beers and wines, it is one of the best places in Geneva for trying something new. The bar’s small stage hosts original concerts on weekends, in addition to good local DJs on most nights. While it is not sleek or fancy, the bar’s warm, down-to-earth atmosphere makes it one of Geneva’s favorites, for locals and visitors alike.

It might be hard to drag yourself away from Geneva ’s ritzy lakefront, knockout Mont Blanc views and rainbow-kissed Jet d’Eau fountain, but you’ll be glad you did – trust us. This sophisticated polyglot of a Swiss city is but a day trip away from vineyards, Alpine peaks, medieval castles and towns with cultural cachet. And given that Switzerland has truly nailed slow travel, most places can be reached by boat, rail or cable car. Here we bring you eight of Geneva’s best day trips.

Take a cable car to the top of Mont Salève 

For dress-circle views of Geneva and Lac Léman to the Alps beyond, make the quick hop over the French border to 1379m Mont Salève , where a cable car hauls you to the summit in minutes. On cloudless days, the view reaches all the way to the Jura Mountains and pearl-white Mont Blanc massif. In summer, there’s lots of action at the top, with hiking, climbing and paragliding, while winter attracts sledders and cross-country skiers.

Watch this space: the cable car is set to relaunch in 2022 with a new panoramic restaurant, museum, botanical garden and climbing wall.

How to reach Mont Salève:  It’s a 20-minute drive east to Etrembières, where the cable car rises to Mont Salève. Alternatively, take bus 8 from Gare Cornavin to Veyrier-Douane, a 10-minute walk from the cable car base station.

Take in the art-inspired Château de Chillon

A medieval castle to trump them all, Château de Chillon makes people gasp out loud with its riot of towers and turrets, and ravishing backdrop lifting the gaze from the lake to the oft-snow-encrusted Alps. If the scene looks like a painting, it is: Turner committed it to canvas back in 1836, and Gustave Courbet did likewise in 1874.

And they weren’t the only ones smitten with its romance: Lord Byron penned The Prisoner of Chillon, a poem recounting the fate of François Bonivard, incarcerated here for his seditious ideas and freed by Bernese forces in 1536. Highlights of a visit include the frescoed Chapelle St Georges and the Gothic dungeons.

How to reach Château de Chillon: It’s a gentle 3km walk along flower-draped shores from Montreux to Chillon, or take bus 201. CGN boats chug here from Lausanne (1¼ hours), Vevey (50 minutes) and Montreux (15 minutes).

Vibe out in bohemian Carouge

When you tire of the crowds, take time out in nearby Carouge. Though it's just a 10-minute tram ride from Geneva, this village-within-a-city moves to its own laid-back, bohemian beat. Architecturally Carouge is a one-off, too, with plane tree-lined lanes and pastel-painted, shuttered houses overlooking courtyard gardens. It bears the 18th-century hallmark of Vittorio Amedeo III, king of Sardinia and duke of Savoy, who had grand plans to rival Geneva as a center of commerce.

 Carouge brims with appealing bars, boutiques, artists' workshops and bistros, some of which spill out onto the pavement when the sun’s out. You’ll also find the Musée de Carouge , zooming in on the neighborhood’s 19th-century glory days. Stop for lunch at Café du Marché on the main square, then return at night for tapas, jam sessions and DJ sets at the artsy Chat Noir .

Get a history lesson in Lausanne

If you’re culturally minded, you won’t be able to resist the siren call of Lausanne , whose medieval historic center, crowned by the weighty Gothic Cathédrale de Notre Dame , tumbles down to the lake in a maze of steep lanes and gardens. Lausanne’s sizeable student population gives it verve and more of a party scene than many a Swiss city. Factor in at least a day – if not a weekend - to do the city and its staggering location on the lake justice.

Lausanne’s star has risen more than ever recently with the opening of PLATEFORME 10 , a thrilling new arts district in born-again train sheds, bringing together the city’s three flagship museums. For more post-industrial cool, nose around the Flon district, where cafes, bars, boutiques and galleries reignite former warehouses. Try Eat Me for global tapas and cocktails, and ever-so-eccentric Le Perroquet for brunch or a G&T.

How to reach Lausanne: Regular trains zip along the lakeshore from Geneva to Lausanne (40 minutes), or it’s a 50-minute drive via the A1.

Explore the fairy-tale architecture of Nyon

Reclining serenely on the lakeshore, midway between Geneva and Lausanne, petite-and-pretty Nyon punches above its weight culturally, with a nautically themed museum , the ruins of a Roman basilica , and not one but three chateaux. Its 12th-century crowning glory is the whimsically turreted Château de Nyon , looking every inch the fairy-tale dream, where you can take a romp around the town’s historical museum, admire ringside views of the lake from the terrace, and taste red and white wines from the surrounding vineyards in its brick-vaulted basement Le Caveau de Nyon . Venture slightly out of town to reach the 18th-century mansion Château de Prangins for more historic exhibits and walks in glorious French-style gardens.

If you are visiting Geneva and would like to spend a day outside the city, you may be surprised by the number of interesting destinations that you can visit on a day trip from Geneva.

There is plenty to fill a couple of days in the city itself but if you’d like to see the beautiful countryside around Geneva – Alps included – you have lots of options.

In this article I’ll share the details of some of the most popular Geneva day trips with you so you can decide which one is right for you.

You can of course make your own way to each of the destinations mentioned, either by car or public transport, or you can join an organised tour.

This article covers both options, and we list our recommendations for the best Geneva day tours if that’s your preferred way to travel.

Montreux day trip from Geneva

Just like Geneva, Montreux is situated on the shores of Lake Geneva but its slightly more northerly location is known as the Swiss Riviera. 

The main attraction here is Chateau de Chillon, a 12th century castle that sits on a rocky promontory jutting out into the lake.  It can be reached via a picturesque lakeside promenade or by bus from Montreux.

The same promenade runs the length of Montreux and it’s in the heart of it that you’ll find a statue dedicated to singer Freddie Mercury. 

The lakefront Casino Barriere also houses the Queen Studio Experience where you can browse memorabilia of the band including handwritten lyrics.

Lake cruises are popular and you’ll see plenty of boats and paddle steamers plying the waters in front of Montreux.

If you’re a wine lover, Montreux is the perfect spot from which to explore the terraces of the Lavaux wine region and sample a drop or two.

How to get from Geneva to Montreux 

If you have a car, getting to Montreux is easy. It’s just 93 kilometres (58 miles) from Geneva via the A1 and A9 highway and the trip should take around one hour and 15 minutes.

The city of Montreux is served by direct rail services from key Swiss cities, including Geneva. Services depart every 30 minutes with a journey time of one hour so it’s no wonder that a visit to Montreux is one of the most popular day trips from Geneva, Switzerland.

Chamonix and Mont Blanc day trip from Geneva

Chamonix is a charming little French town that is located at the foot of Mont Blanc, western Europe’s highest mountain at 4,808 meters above sea level. 

There are plenty of things to see when visiting Chamonix, dominated mostly by natural wonders. 

One natural beauty worth seeing is Mer de Glace (the Sea of Ice), the largest glacier in France. At seven kilometres long and 200 metres deep, it is one of the most popular attractions in the Chamonix Valley.

Mer de Glace can be reached by the Montenvers train Chamonix town centre.

At Brevent, breathtaking panoramic views are on offer and this is, arguably, from where you’ll get the best views of Mont Blanc.  Take the cable car from Chamonix to Plan Praz, then the cable car to Le Brevent.   

Another fun thing to do is to take a ride on the Tramway du Mont Blanc, a rack railway that winds its way up to to the Nid d’Aigle (The Eagle’s Nest) at 2,372m.

Of course there are plenty of walking trails and adventure sports to enjoy at Chamonix, too. 

How to get from Geneva to Chamonix 

Driving from Geneva to Chamonix, France will require you to travel via the A40 motorway. The town is located 82 kilometres (51 miles) southeast of Geneva, and the journey takes around one hour. 

Chamonix has a small railway station but for most of the year there are no direct services from Geneva, making it inconvenient to reach by train.

The best option for those who want to do an independent Chamonix day trip from Geneva is to take a bus.  Direct services depart regularly from central Geneva and take an hour to reach Chamonix.

Annecy day trip from Geneva

Annecy is probably one of the most-photographed of all French towns so it’s no wonder that many folks plan an Annecy day trip from Geneva.

This charming city has been known for centuries as the Venice of Savoie because of the numerous canals that meander their way through town.

One of the most popular sights in Annecy is the Palais d’Isle, a 12th century palace that was later transformed into a prison. Located on an artificial island with flower-decked houses on each side of the canal, you can see why photographers flock here. 

All through the Old Town, pastel-coloured buildings line the narrow cobbled streets and canals and there are plenty of boutiques and artisan galleries to explore.

With its location on one of the prettiest lakes in France, no doubt you’ll spend some time by the water.  Jardins de l’Europe, a park alongside the lake, is a great spot to enjoy the views, join a lake cruise or perhaps hire a boat for some time on the water. 

With such a variety of ways to spend your time in Annecy, it is definitely one of the best day trips from Geneva to France.

How to get from Geneva to Annecy 

If you have a car, the A41 motorway is the best route to take to reach the city of Annecy. It is located 42 kilometres (26 miles) south of Geneva and the drive usually takes forty minutes to an hour, depending on the road conditions.

The fastest train services from Geneva to Annecy require one change of train (usually at Aix-les-Bains) and take just over two hours. 

Direct bus services operate between Geneva and Annecy with a journey time of one hour. There are numerous services each day.

Geneva to Yvoire day trip

One of the prettiest French towns near Geneva is Yvoire, a medieval village that is located in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region, and due to its proximity to Geneva, Yvoire has become a popular day-trip destination. 

Known for its 14th century castle perched on the edge of the lake, Yvoire is recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Late Spring and Summer are the best seasons to witness its beauty when floral displays spill from the windows of every building in town.  Thanks to the gorgeous floral displays, Yvoire is known as the ‘French Flower Village’.

The Jardin des Cinq Sens (Garden of the Five Senses), which has transformed the Castle’s former kitchen garden into a place of tranquility, is well worth a visit.

Allow time to wander the cobbled streets, admire the medieval buildings and to browse the boutiques and galleries in this picturesque village.

How to get from Geneva to Yvoire 

Yvoire is located just 27 kilometres (18 miles) from Geneva.  It takes about 30 minutes to reach Yvoire.

There are no train services from Geneva to Yvoire.

Twice-daily ferries depart Geneva for Yvoire.  Journey time is one hour and 35 minutes.

Gruyeres day trip from Geneva

Another medieval town that is popular as a day trip from Geneva is Gruyeres.

Despite its small size, there are numerous attractions in Gruyères including La Maison du Gruyere, birthplace of the world famous Gruyère cheese where you can watch the cheese-making process.

If you’d like to taste the end product, head to one of the restaurants in town and order fondue. Gruyère cheese is the main ingredient and is a popular dish in town.,

Another tasty treat on offer on a day trip to Gruyères is chocolate. For a small fee, you can taste all the chocolates manufactured at the Maison Cailler chocolate factory at nearby Broc.

You won’t be able to visit Gruyères without noticing the 13th century castle perched on a hill. Inside the castle, a museum displays artefacts, tapestries and frescoes that date back hundreds of years.

There are a couple of interesting museums in town and the pretty Old Town is definitely worth exploring.

How to get from Geneva to Gruyeres 

If you are driving from Geneva, the quickest way to Gruyères is to drive along the A1 motorway. You should allow an hour and a half to cover the 120 kilometres (74 miles). 

Regular trains depart Geneva for Gruyères.  Most services require you to change trains at least twice, and you should expect the journey to take you around two hours. Click here for timetables and prices

Geneva to Zermatt day trip

It’s definitely one of the longer day excursions from Geneva that we cover in this article, but Zermatt is such a beautiful village it is worth the extra travel time.

This car-free village is popular as a ski resort in winter and as the starting point for those who want to see the magnificent Matterhorn.  Whilst you get wonderful views of this iconic peak from the village itself, most folks head higher still.

The Gornergratbahn is a cogwheel train that takes passengers to Gornergrat, 30 minutes above Zermatt, from where you get spectacular views of the Matterhorn and the Gorner Glacier.

At the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, which is reached by cable car, fourteen glaciers and 38 four-thousand-metre peaks spread out in a 360-degree panorama around you.

There are numerous hiking trails around Zermatt where you can breathe in the fresh mountain air and admire the stunning scenery.

In the village centre you’ll find plenty of shopping opportunities, day spas and a friendly vibe.

How to get from Geneva to Zermatt 

If you plan on driving to Zermatt you’ll need to set off early in the day.  It takes about three hours to cover the 234 kilometres (145 miles) via the A1 and A9.

Zermatt is a car-free village so all cars must be parked at Tasch (there are multiple car parks available) and then transfer to Zermatt by shuttle train.  

Undercover parking at the car park located next to Tasch station costs CHF16 per day (24 hours). 

Shuttle trains from Tasch to Zermatt (and vice versa) run every 25 to 30 minutes – price CHF16.40 return per adult.  Tickets can be purchased from the machines in the station (English language option available) using a credit card.

It takes three hours and 40 minutes to travel by train from Geneva to Zermatt with a change required at Visp.  Trains depart at least twice-hourly. Click here for timetables and prices

Schilthorn day trip from Geneva

Although it is usually considered a day trip from Interlaken or Lucerne, it is possible to enjoy an excursion to the Schilthorn from Geneva. 

With an altitude of 2,970 meters, the summit of the Schilthorn offers fantastic 360 degree views of the Bernese Alps and beyond.   Maybe famous as the setting for the James Bond movie ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, the Schilthorn features lots of Bond memorabilia and themed activities but you don’t need to be a Bond fan to enjoy a visit.

The Schilthorn is accessed by either of two routes: the first involves a cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp and then a connecting train to Murren.  Then it’s a walk through the village of Murren to board the Schilthorn cableway for the two-leg journey (via Birg) to Schilthorn.

The second route involves a cable car ride from Stechelberg (just past Lauterbrunnen) to the Schilthorn via Murren and Birg.

How to get from Geneva to Schilthorn 

If you have a car, you need to head to Lauterbrunnen,  226 kilometres (140 miles) from Geneva. The journey should take you around two and a half hours via the A1 motorway.

There’s a large undercover car park on the left as you enter Lauterbrunnen and you’ll find the Grutschalp cable car station across the street.

Alternatively, if you prefer to take the cable car all the way to the Schilthorn from Stechelberg, drive through Lauterbrunnen and follow the signs to Stechelberg, a further six kilometres (3.75 miles) away.  You’ll find a car park at the cable car station.

Train travelers should take a train from Geneva to Interlaken Ost and then change to a regional train to Lauterbrunnen.  The fastest service to Interlaken Ost is just under three hours (via Bern), and from Interlaken to Ost it takes just 20 minutes.  Click here to check timetables and prices

Geneva to Glacier 3000 day trip

Another mountain that you can visit is Glacier 3000, located at Diablerets near Gstaad.

A 15-minute cable car ride whisks visitors from the station on the Col du Pillon to the summit where there are plenty of activities on offer.

Glacier 3000 is home to the Peak Walk by Tissot, the world’s first suspension bridge between two mountain peaks.  Stretching for 107 metres, it offers stunning views of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and Jungfrau.

Access to the Peak Walk is included with your cable car ticket, as is the Glacier Walk, snow fun park and Ice Express chairlift. 

For an additional fee you can ride in a snow bus, go dog sledding or try out the world’s highest bobsleigh track, the Alpine Coaster. (Some activities are only available in summer.)

How to get to Glacier 3000 from Geneva

Visitors arriving by car should park at the Glacier 3000 cableway station at Col du Pillon, 130 kilometres (81 miles) from Geneva.  The trip should take you around an hour and a half. Parking is free.

The best way to reach Glacier 3000 by public transport is to take a train from Geneva to Gstaad (2 hours 30 minutes) and then catch a bus from Gstaad station. Click here to check train timetables and prices

Switzerland is a diverse and interesting country, made up of a confederation of independent cantons and boasting some of Europe’s most stunning natural beauty.  It’s also relatively compact, so I’m sharing some of the best day trips from Geneva you should consider for your itinerary.

Some general tips for travel in Switzerland

The country was founded in 1291 when three states (or cantons) united, and grew to the 26 encompassed today.   Switzerland has f our official languages—German, French, Italian, and Romansch, and so depending on what part you’re in you’ll hear different things.  English is very widely spoken and understood though.  

One of my biggest tips is to keep your itinerary flexible if you’re planning mountain excursions or one of the scenic train rides.  The weather is unpredictable, and if it’s overcast or rainy you’ll have no visibility.

Tipping is not a big part of the culture in Switzerland, as waiters are paid decent salaries and law requires that all service charges be included in published prices.  Many people do add a small tip, but it’s more like rounding up to the nearest five or ten francs rather than the 15-20% that Americans do.  If you’re a large group, add a little more, and for a simple drink more like 50 cents or 1 franc.

Like many Europeans, the Swiss put a high value on speaking quietly in restaurants and on trains.  Avoid loud conversations and talking on your phone in these places, on public transportation, in line at the bank, etc.  It’s considered incredibly rude.  Also, know some cars on trains are considered “silent zones”, with talking and cell phone use prohibited.

Many of these spots can be reached by train (or boat in a few cases).  You can also easily rent a car and drive around, giving you more flexibility.  For renting a car, I always search in a few different places and compare both the prices and specific offerings/benefits.  My go-to’s are  DiscoverCars ,  RentalCars.com , and  AutoEurope  as well.

The best day trips from Geneva

Lake Geneva (a.k.a. Lac Leman) is located in the southwest corner of the country, surrounded by Alps and lined with a variety of castles, museums, spas, resort towns, and vineyards.  It’s kind of the Swiss Riviera.  French is the predominant language here.  Personally I’d skip Geneva itself, but there are tons of cute cities around (like delightful Lausanne).

No matter where you go in the area, make sure you take some time to walk along the shore of Lake Geneva, with swirls of beautiful greens, blues, and turquoises.  The waters from glaciers in the French Alps create these vibrant colors, and combined with the deep blue waters of the Rhone River it creates a really cool marbled look.

I’ll go into detail below on several trips we took ourselves, and then I’ll outline a few at the end of the post that we didn’t get to do but I definitely wanted to.

Chateau Chillon (and nearby Yvoire)

The minute I saw a photo of Chateau Chillon, I knew it had to be on our itinerary.  The medieval castle is perched on the shores of beautiful, moody Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) and is apparently the most-visited historical building in Switzerland.  It’s an easy day trip from Geneva, about an hour’s drive from where we were staying.

We did a self-guided tour through with one shared audioguide between us, and enjoyed learning more about the history of the area.  The castle’s dungeons were a pretty cool architectural feat, as they were carved directly into the castle’s rock base—probably my favorite part.

Honestly, one thing I realized on this trip was that, despite my love of European history, the area comprising Switzerland has been under my radar.  And in addition to the history, the location can’t be beat…the castle has a gorgeous view of the mountains across the lake and cool mountainside town on either side.

From Chateau Chillon we drove around the lake a bit, across the border into France, to have lunch at the tiny medieval town of Yvoire.  The town itself is an on-foot experience only, no cars allowed.

We didn’t spend tons of time here (there’s not *that* much to do), but it had great views over Lake Geneva and I really loved the cool church, which has a bright silver spire, stainless steel and gold leaf so it shines brightly all of the time.

Medieval Gruyères

We all know I’m a big food tourist, and one of the first things that comes to mind when I think of Switzerland is cheese—and specifically, FONDUE.  And when I heard that there was an actual town named Gruyères from which the famous cheese gets its name and that is known for fondue, I had to give it a try.

I was worried that it would be a cheesy (ha, see what I did there??) tourist trap, but I was delighted to find a beautiful medieval hill town with gorgeous Alpine views.  Granted, we visited in late March so it wasn’t peak season, but Gruyères was a pleasant surprise.

We didn’t do much shopping or poke around in the stores too much, but rather made a beeline for the outer edge of the town and the castle.  You can walk around and enjoy amazing views on a clear day (which we had).  The current castle dates back to the Middle Ages, though the spot was inhabited much further back.

The region’s famed Moitié-Moitié fondue is made using two cheeses—Le Gruyère and Vacherin Fribourgeois (and wine), and we knew we had to try it while we were in town.  In absolutely baffling news, traditionally they only serve boiled potatoes and a few gherkins (gross) with it.

Seriously, out of all the awesome things in the world that you can dip in melty cheese, that’s it!  They took pity on us after we asked and brought some bread cubes out too.  But we had a blast dipping and swirling that gooey cheese straight from the pot.  This is a must if you’re in the area!

Cailler Chocolate Factory

Besides cheese, what’s the other food that the Swiss are known for??  Chocolate, of course!  We did a half-day trip from Geneva that was a one-two punch of calories…the cheese fondue of Gruyeres and the chocolate at Cailler.

Cailler was founded in the early 1800s in Vevey (on the shores of Lake Geneva), and is now a major player in the chocolate industry (owned by Nestle now).  It’s definitely a Swiss institution and a great way to spend a couple hours.

We took the tour which walks you through the factory’s history as well as the chocolate-making process.  Then you get to the good stuff…pretending to be a Cailler taster.  I tried all 6-7 types they offered and then felt ill from the amount of sugar I’d consumed 🙂

I’ll be honest and say that Swiss chocolate (milk) isn’t my personal favorite as I’m a dark chocolate gal, but it’s an awesome experience!

Luzern (or Lucerne)

Lucerne (or Luzern) is a beautiful ancient town located in central Switzerland on the banks of Lake Lucerne.  It is super charming and actually ended up being my mom’s and my favorite part of our Switzerland adventure.  You can do it as a day trip from Geneva, but I recommend an overnight if you’re able.

We had a little less than a day in the city and because of its size and walkability, were able to really see and do almost everything we wanted (minus a more involved trip up to Mount Rigi).  The best way to enjoy it is on foot, strolling past the historic, brightly-colored houses and well-known medieval sights, and then exploring the surroundings by boat.

Probably the most recognizable thing in Luzern is the Kappellbrücke, the oldest wooden bridge in Europe and oldest surviving truss bridge in the world.  Make sure you take the time to walk across it as well.

We enjoyed a quiet sunset reflecting of the beautiful old buildings, had a delicious dinner, and then in the morning walked over to see the Lion of Luzern.  Probably the second-most famous thing to see in Luzern, the lion was carved in 1820 to remember over 700 Swiss soldiers who were massacred in the French Revolution.

The style of carving is just so…sad.  It’s really emotionally and beautifully done, and I highly recommend making a stop to see him.

Luzern is also surrounded by some of Switzerland’s most stunning mountain scenery in Mounts Pilatus, Rigi, and Stanserhorn—easily accessible by cableways, trains, and boats.  If you have more time, it would make an amazing base for 3-7 days as you explore the mountains and lakes in the area.

If you have time, Luzern is just a short boat ride away from Mount Rigi, which can be accessed via the first cogwheel train in Europe, with gorgeous and dizzying views of Lake Lucerne and over two dozen Swiss cantons.  I had REALLY wanted to, but it was already so late in the day that it just wasn’t possible.

So on a whim we bought a ticket and hopped on one of the last boats of the day, over to Vitznau.  It was a glorious spring day, perfect for being out on the water.  And the views from the boat were stunning!  We didn’t do much in Vitznau, just wandered around a bit and then had a glass of wine by the water before catching the ferry back.

Golden Pass Train

If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, my guess is that one of the first things that will come up in your research is the “scenic” train trips. There are, I think, four different official ones, and I definitely knew I wanted to make one happen as a day trip from Geneva.

That made the Golden Pass train the most logical choice, given its route and proximity.  I will say that it was way harder than I would have thought to actually figure out the route logistics and timing, but everything went perfectly once I did.

The scenery along the route is absolutely stunning, and changes pretty dramatically so you get a good sampling of bucolic Heidi-like pastures, crystal-clear mountain lakes, and craggy snow-capped Alpine peaks.  One watch out though, if you’re *only* wanting to do it for the photos, you might reconsider because the glare from the windows is challenging.

The first leg of the trip is from Luzern to Interlaken, and is your quintessential Swiss mountain and valley scenery.  I particularly loved the gorgeous turquoise lakes you start seeing as you get close to Brienz.

From there, the scenery starts to shift to sharp mountain peaks, to crazily turquoise lakes, to cute little villages, and eventually the fancier French-feeling buildings around Lake Geneva.

We did ours “backwards”, from Luzern back into the Geneva area.  Internet wisdom says that Zweisimmen to Montreaux is the best segment, but it actually wasn’t my favorite (which may have been due to time of day or time of year).

Other Geneva day trips to consider (that I didn’t get to try)

Visit wineries.

This is the #1 day trip from Geneva that I really wanted to do and didn’t get to.  You have a number of different famous and under-the-radar options around here for wineries, including the UNESCO World Heritage Vineyards in Vevey.  You can visit by car, train, or as part of a boat cruise around Lake Geneva (MAN I wish I could have done this!!).

The vineyards here date back over 1,000 years, when the Italians brought the first grapes to Switzerland.  One you should definitely look up is the massive Lavaux Vineyards (a UNESCO World Heritage site), then walk down to St. Saphorin or Rivaz which are lovely vineyard villages.

Montreux is a lovely expensive resort set along an expanse of Lake Geneva.  Chateau Chillon is also here, so you can do a two-fer.  You’ve got miles of lakeside walking paths, beautiful flowers and trees, and views of the Alps that never get old.

If you hit the timing right, they host the Montreux Jazz Festival in early July, the second largest annual one in the world (I was SO sad we weren’t here for this!).

The Romans founded Lausanne on the lakefront, but when Rome fell and the barbarians arrived, the people fled for the hills and ended up establishing what’s the Old Town today.  Make sure to explore both the lakefront area and the twisty, steep Old Town if you visit!

Mountain explorations near Luzern

I mentioned this up in the Luzern section, but there are so many amazing options around here (depending on time of year and weather, of course).  You have many options to get up into the Swiss mountains, from gondolas and cable cars to unique things like the CabriO (the world’s first open air cable car) and the world’s first cogwheel train up to Rigi Kulm.

Both Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus offer a lot, so look into a combination of ferries, trains, and hiking.  If you love a little adrenaline, you might even look into paragliding here!

Other trains

I already went into detail on the Golden Pass above, but there are a few other train trips you can look into (that are further away and so not a day trip).  This blog post does a great job of outlining the different scenic train routes and also what to see along the way.

The Glacier Express is the world’s slowest “express” train and connects St. Moritz and Zermatt.  The Bernina Express is on the opposite side of the country and goes between Chur and Lugano (including a bus portion).  The Veralpen Express goes between Luzern and St. Gallen.  And the Gotthard Panorama Express goes between Luzern and Lugano.

So there you have it—a ton of different options for day trips from Geneva!  Whether you’re looking for history, culture, stunning scenery, thrilling adventure, food and wine, or just some place chill, this area of Switzerland has something for everyone.

10 Great Day Trips to Take From Geneva

Geneva is a gateway to cultural history, mountain landscapes and much more. Here are some of the great places that you can get to from Geneva on a day trip in Switzerland and in neighboring France.

There are old, medieval streets and architecture abound in Neuchâtel. During the warm summer months, it’s a pleasure to stroll along town’s lakeside promenade that hugs the side of Lake Neuchâtel. The Laténium, Switzerland’s largest archaeological museum, is based here and features local historical artefacts stretching back to 50,000 years ago. At the Place de Halles, there is also a lively market held three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during the summer.

The medieval town of Annecy is one of the most beautiful in France and sits on the edge of what is known as the cleanest lake in Europe, and it’s only an hour’s drive away from Geneva. After suffering many years of environmental degradation and pollution, new laws came into place in the 1960s and gradually transformed Lake Annecy into the crystal clear waters of today. You’ll find yourself getting lost in the maze of old streets and canals, which have earned Annecy the nickname of “Venice of the Alps”. Be sure to pass by the Pont des Amours (Lovers’ Bridge) for some of the best views.

It’s often said that Lausanne is more lively than Geneva. Whether that’s the shopping scene or the nightlife, once you’ve visited both you may well agree. There is a lot to see and do in Lausanne, from the winding streets of the old town and the picturesque port of Ouchy to the Olympic Museum, where you can discover what it means to be an Olympian. Take a stroll down the Escaliers du Marché, a wooden covered pathway, which links the city’s oldest area, Cité, to two market places. Following the steep steps from Place de la Palud takes you to another historical highlight, the 13th century Gothic Cathedral of Notre Dame of Lausanne, considered the finest Gothic building in the entire country.

Lavaux Vineyards

Lavaux is Switzerland’s largest vineyard area, spanning 830 hectares and stretching along the side of Lake Geneva for 30km. The current vineyard terraces date from the 11th century and the area is a UNESCO world heritage site for its cultural importance. Switzerland isn’t known as a producer of fine wines mainly because they export only a fraction of what they produce, so much of the wine here is unlikely to be found outside of the country. In Lavaux, you’ll find the Swiss wine route and some of the best wine-tasting in the many wine cellars that are open to visitors.

Aficionados of jazz are likely to know of Montreux , which is world famous for its two week long jazz festival. The town comes alive with big names coming from across the globe, as well as many more up and coming artists appearing on the free stages. A walk along the 3.5 km promenade takes you to the Château du Chillon , Geneva’s most visited historical monument, that sits on a small island on the lake. Montreux is also a good base to explore the surrounding countryside, as the annual Narcissus bloom that are a must-see.

Vallee de Joux

A short trip from Geneva takes you into the heart of the Jura mountains in the Vallee de Joux. The valley is one the most beautiful in the Jura mountain range and offers many great trails for hiking. The Lac de Joux sits 1000 metres above sea level and is a popular site for water sports due to the high winds that can be whipped up. During the summer, it’s also a lure for bathers and swimmers. For a more subterranean view, head to the town of Vallorbe where you can venture into a series of limestone caves, called the “ Fairy caves ” by locals.

No trip to Switzerland would be complete without a visit to Gruyères , the country’s cheese capital. The small medieval town gives its name to Le Gruyère cheese and you can discover how it’s made at the local factory and sample it too of course. Afterwards you can visit the Château de Gruyères, or admire the views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Ferney Voltaire

For fans of literature and history, a short trip across the Swiss-French border to Ferney Voltaire is a must. Here, in the years between 1757 and 1778, Voltaire turned the small hamlet of Ferney into a town, shaping its development by building a church, a theatre and a small watchmaking industry, while simultaneously writing his works that would shape the world of human rights. You can visit the Château de Ferney and explore where Voltaire spent many of his last years working. Every Saturday there is also a lively market that stretches through the town centre, with basketfuls of delicious fresh foods from France and beyond.

A 90-minute drive from Geneva takes you to Chamonix, a French ski resort nestled at the foot of the Mont Blanc, Europe’s tallest mountain. Chamonix is a popular choice as a ski escape from Geneva but there is a lot more on offer to hold you there, such as the Glacier des Bossons, where you can venture inside of a creaking glacier, or Le 3842 high-attitude café where you ‘Step Into the Void’ in a glass cube.

Mont Salève

Overlooking Geneva and offering great views of the city, Lake Geneva and the surrounding Alps, the Mont Salève is a short bus ride away from the city centre. Across the border in France, the top of Salève standing at 1,143 metres can be reached by a short hour hike on a network of trails . From the small town of Veyrier you can take a cable car ride to the summit, it takes around six minutes to reach the top. To get there take bus 8 to its terminus at Veyrier, walk across the border (bring your passport) and follow the signs to the cable car or trails.

However, it is also a great base for exploring the nearby French towns and cities, such as Annecy , Chamonix, and the world-famous Mont Blanc Mountain.

When it comes to getting around for day trips from Geneva, there are a few options available.

One popular choice is to take a scenic road trip , which offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. However, parking can be difficult in some areas, so it’s important to plan accordingly.

Public transportation in Switzerland is just excellent. Enjoy some amazing train rides when traveling from Geneva to other parts of Switzerland – or even France .

If getting around via public transportation, I highly recommend the Swiss Travel Pass, which offers unlimited travel on trains, buses, and boats throughout Switzerland.

The pass also includes access to many museums and attractions, making it a great value for those who plan to do a lot of exploring.

WHERE TO STAY IN GENEVA

Of course, staying in the city center of Geneva or on the shores of gorgeous Lake Geneva, ideally with a view of the Jet d’Eau – the Geneva Water Foutain – would be a good choice. However, hotel prices in this area are extremely high, so it will also depend on your budget which hotel you should pick.

BEST TIME TO VISIT GENEVA

The best time to visit Geneva is during the summer months, which typically span from June to August. Summer in Geneva offers pleasant weather, with average temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit).

You can spend wonderful days at Lake Geneva, go on some outdoor adventures like hiking, experience a lot of festivals and events, and also have the long summer days which will allow you to soak up the beauty of Switzerland (and France) for much longer than in the shorter days.

However, I also love the fall season around Lake Geneva as the crowds leave and the fall foliage makes the area even prettier. It’s important to note that summer is a popular tourist season in Geneva, so it can be more crowded than at other times of the year.

If you prefer a quieter visit, consider planning your trip in the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October), when the weather is still pleasant, and there are fewer crowds.

Winter in Geneva is also an amazing time to visit Geneva – thanks to its location, you can do some amazing winter sports activities or enjoy snow-capped mountains nearby.

BEST GENEVA DAY TOURS IN 2024

So, without further ado, here are my favorite day trips from Geneva.

A visit to the Swiss Riviera is a must whenever you are in Geneva. The Swiss Riviera refers to the region along the shores of Lake Geneva (also known as Lac Léman) in Switzerland.

It is a beautiful area renowned for its stunning landscapes, charming towns, and luxurious resorts and stretches from the city of Lausanne to the eastern edge of Lake Geneva, encompassing several municipalities and villages along the way.

This charming town is nestled on the shores of Lake Geneva, offering stunning scenery, a lively promenade, and a famous castle, the Chateau du Chillon.

Hop on a train from Geneva to Montreux, and soak in the breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains during the one-hour ride. Once you arrive, head straight to the promenade , a lively strip packed with restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Take a relaxing boat ride on the lake and bask in the serene beauty of the surrounding mountains and the calm waters.

To reach Montreux from Geneva, you can take a train from the Geneva main station . Trains run regularly throughout the day, making it a convenient option. Alternatively, you can opt for a scenic drive along the lake, which takes about 1.5 hours, or hop on a boat and enjoy a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Geneva.

LAVAUX 

Get ready to savor some of the best wines in Switzerland as you explore the stunning Lavaux Vineyard Terraces!

As you explore the lower slopes of the mountainside between the villages and the lake, you’ll witness an outstanding example of a centuries-long interaction between people and their environment. The vine terraces were developed to optimize local resources, resulting in the production of top-quality wines that are highly valued to this day.

GLACIER 3000

Get ready for an epic day trip from Geneva to Glacier 3000, a stunning mountain peak that offers breathtaking views and thrilling activities! 

You can also try the Peak Walk, a suspension bridge that offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. For a more relaxing experience, take a scenic walk on the glacier and soak in the stunning beauty of the Swiss Alps.

After a day of adventure, head back down to the base and indulge in some local Swiss cuisine at one of the many restaurants. You can also explore the charming village of Les Diablerets , located at the base of Glacier 3000.

To get to Glacier 3000 from Geneva, you can take a train or drive. The train takes around 2.5 hours, and the drive takes about 1.5 hours, offering scenic views of the Alps along the way.

NYON & YVOIRE

Are you ready for a day trip filled with charming towns, stunning views, and cultural experiences? Start your adventure in the beautiful Swiss town of Nyon, and then head across the border to the French town of Yvoire!

Begin your day by exploring the charming town of Nyon, located on the shores of Lake Geneva. Stroll through the old town and marvel at the stunning architecture, and then head to Nyon Castle to learn about the town’s rich history.

Explore the winding streets and picturesque gardens, and take in the stunning views of the lake. Visit the Jardin des Cinq Sens, a beautiful garden that showcases the five senses through its design and plants. You can also explore the Chateau d’Ivoire , a historic castle that dates back to the 14th century.

After a day of exploration, have lunch at one of the town’s restaurants, which offer stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

To get to Nyon and Yvoire from Geneva, you can take a train or drive. The train takes around 20 minutes to Nyon. Then take a boat ride to Yvoire, which takes about 20 minutes. The drive takes about 45 minutes, offering scenic views of the lake and mountains along the way.

10 Beautiful Day Trips from Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland is a great city to visit. There are many things to see in Geneva, but sometimes people are fortunate to be able to spend more time in Geneva and would like to see some other places around the city. I was able to visit Geneva several times and I learned about a few beautiful places right around Geneva. Each is within easy driving distance and makes for a great day trip .

If you have already explored Geneva and have extra time, then the area surrounding Geneva is simply beautiful! If you have a few extra days to spend in the Geneva area, you can easily visit many beautiful places. So, come along with me on my favorite day trips from Geneva .

In this article:

1. Perouges

Located across the border into France, Perouges is my favorite day trip from Geneva. This small village is one of those beautiful places that makes me want to come back to Europe and visit as often as I can. A small medieval village perched up on top of a hill, Perouges is a perfectly preserved medieval jewel. You would never find anything like Perouges in the US. Located only about one hour and a half driving from Geneva, Perouges is situated in the mountain region of Rhone-Alpes in France.

The road from Geneva to Perouges was also beautiful, winding its way through the Jura mountains between Switzerland and France. Everything is green and beautiful. As you come closer to Perouges, the landscape turns from mountain peaks to gentle rolling hills filled with wheat fields. This is beautiful French countryside!

Stay in Perouges . If you want to stay around Perouges, you will love the charming and affordable The Resid for Calixte right in Perouges. Or you can find budget hotels in the Rhone-Alpes area . My second favorite on my list of day trips from Geneva is Annecy, also in France. Annecy is only about 45 minutes driving distance from Geneva  and it makes for a great day trip. We loved this old town and we happened to visit during the largest Farmer’s Market of the entire year. Annecy has the most amazing location we’ve seen. It’s nestled in the mountains and the Annecy Lake is just gorgeous. The drive from Geneva to Annecy is very pleasant, especially when getting closer to Annecy on the A41 motorway from Geneva . It’s a beautiful and short drive, so it’s worth all your time.

Stay in Annecy.  If you need a hotel you can stay at the excellent Allobroges Hotel (great value, free parking and great location) or you can search budget hotels in Annecy . Take a bus from Geneva to Annecy.  If you don’t have a rental car, the easiest way to get to Annecy from Geneva is by taking a half-day bus tour of Annecy from Geneva . Book a local walking tour of Annecy . Take a beautifully conducted local walking tour of Annecy which highlights local culture and history. Just gorgeous! Drive to Annecy. If you rent a car in Switzerland , you can easily drive to Annecy in undern one hour. The best way to get to Annecy Lake and Annecy Old Town is to look for signs pointing you to City Hall (Hotel de Ville). Once you get in the area, park at the City Hall parking lot ,  and then just walk around the lake area and start walking up the canal. This will take you to the old town area. Annecy Travel Guide

3. Chamonix

Third place on my list of day trips from Geneva is in France again. It’s the mountain resort of Chamonix . This beautiful village is located one hour away from Geneva on the A40 freeway. The drive from Geneva to Chamonix is just amazing! The French Alps line up the freeway and are looming right in front of you. It’s just really cool to see.

The village of Chamonix is the gateway to the French Alps and the Mont Blanc peak which is the tallest peak in Europe. While the Alps are the main attraction at Chamonix, the village itself is a really quiet retreat from the busy life in Geneva.

Continuing with my favorite day trips from Geneva we find another small village in France. Yvoire is just across Lake Geneva inside France. Yvoire is only about 30 minutes driving distance from Geneva , but a visit to this small village will take you way back during medieval times . Yes, Yvoire is very touristy but for a good reason…it makes for a great tourist destination. Old cottages, city walls and cute restaurants will make your visit worthwhile.

Stay in Yvoire.   Find the budget hotels in the Rhone-Alpes area of France. Staying in the French side of Lake Geneva is generally much cheaper than staying in Geneva.

Take a boat from Geneva to Yvoire.   Take a beautiful boat trip from Geneva to Yvoire and explore this beautiful medieval village.

Drive to Yvoire. You have two ways for reaching Yvoire: across Lake Geneva by boat or by car when you drive around Lake Geneva and enter the French area of Rhone-Alpes. Renting a car is faster and the drive from Geneva to Yvoire is beautiful but the most scenic way for getting to Yvoire is by boat from Geneva or Montreux.

5. Gruyeres

We are finally back in Switzerland on our list of day trips from Geneva. Gruyeres is a Swiss medieval village which makes for a great day trip from Geneva . Yes, Gruyeres is very touristy but there are good reasons why the medieval village of Gruyeres is so popular. The old village of Gruyeres is perched on the hill and an old cobblestone road winds its way through the middle of the village. At the end of the road you will find an imposing medieval castle.

Stay in Gruyeres .  You can stay at the charming Gruyeres Rooms inside the medieval village or  find other budget hotels in the Gruyere region of Switzerland.

Book a local tour from Geneva . If you don’t have a rental car, the easiest way to get to Gruyeres is by booking a day trip to Gruyeres Village & Chocolate Factory from Geneva . This tour will take you to Gruyeres and enable you to visit all the attractions without the hassle of driving.

Drive to Gruyeres . Since, Gruyeres is a small village, the easiest way to get here is to rent a car in Switzerland . Gruyeres is located about one hour and twenty minutes driving from Geneva. 6. Estavayer le Lac

Suggested by a long time reader, Estavayer is a small town near the shores of Lake Neuchatel in the Fribourg Canton. Estavayer is a quaint village that definitely deserves a place on my list of day trips from Geneva.

7. Romainmotier-Envy

Romaimotier Envy is a tiny old village located about an hour and a half drive from Geneva in the Vaud canton. It is well known for its beautiful old Romanesque church. Suggested by a reader, Romaimotier is another tiny place I plan to visit on my next trip to Geneva.

8. Montreux

Montreux is the jewel of Lake Geneva and deserves a good place on my list of day trips from Geneva. World famous for its rock and jazz concerts , Montreux is also known by its nearby Chateau do Chillon which served as inspiration for Lord Byron’s work. If you are in Geneva, it is worth your time coming to visit Montreux even it if it’s only for the amazing views of the lake.

Stay in Montreux. Switzerland is very expensive in general but you can find budget hotels in Montreux if you are willing to stay a bit further from the lakefront.

Visit Chateau de Chillon.   Purchase a ticket and skip the line and enjoy this beautiful medieval castle and prison with amazing views of Lake Leman. Or take a beautiful 2-hour boat cruise from Montreux and enjoy Lake Leman.

Book a local tour. Unfortunately, you have to change two trains in order to get to Montreux by train from Geneva. The easiest way to get to Montreux from Geneva is with a day tour from Geneva to Montreux & Lavaux . If you want to also visit the wineries and more places around Lake Geneva including Montreux,  join a beautiful day tour of the Swiss Riviera from Geneva .

9. Ovronnaz

Next on my list of day trips from Geneva is Ovronnaz which is located north east of Geneva. Ovronnaz is a thermal springs town and ski resort in the winter. This alpine town is high up in the mountains above the Rhone Valley area and provides access to the Swiss Alps both in the summer for hiking and mountaineering and in the winter for all the winter sports thanks to the beautiful slopes available in the area.

Drive to Ovronnaz . The drive from Geneva to Ovronnaz takes about 2 hours and it is a beautiful drive on the road that hugs Lake Geneva as it enters the beautiful Rhone Valley area. Once you arrive in Ovronnaz, you can look for signs for the ski lift which is available in the summer as well. The panorama from the top of the ski lift is simply awesome.

Stay around Ovronnaz . When you plan trip your next day trip to Ovronnaz from Geneva you can find the budget hotels in the Valais area of Switzerland .

10. Thonon les Bains

If you are in Yvoire, just drive a little further up the road and visit the beautiful marina at Thonon-les-Bains. The town itself is not very interesting with the exception of the old Chateaux de Ripaille. However, the marina on Lake Geneva at Thonon is superb. To reach the marina you just drive down the hill and follow the signs.

Thonon-les-Bains, France is located about 10 minutes drive north from the village of Yvoire, France. The marina area in Thonon is peaceful and beautiful and it is worth your time to drive a few extra miles to get there.

Janet…the easiest way to get to Montreux from Geneva is by train. Get on a train from Geneva to Montreux (takes about one hour). Here is the Swiss Rail website .

Hello I am visiting Geneva in August for 2 weeks and wondering where to go outside Geneva for the weekend?

Hoda…it depends on what transportation you have. If you have access to a car I recommend Perouges, Annecy Yvoire, Montreux and Gruyeres. If you don’t have access to a car I recommend Yvoire and Montreux by boat and Annecy by bus. There are also local tours I have recommended on this page.

Hi! We will be staying in Geneva in March and I was wondering if the trip to Chamonix is doable with a baby that time of year? Do you drive across the Alps to get there from Geneva or are the Alps next to the A40?

The trip to Chamonix from Geneva is completely fine with a baby…you are not going across the Alps…but at the bottom of them. Taking the tram up the mountain to Aguilles de midi…might be a bit harder with the change in altitude and cold weather up top. However, I don’t think it’s bad and you should be fine and enjoying the trip.

Thanks for the offers. I spent over a week in Geneva and the surrounding areas and in addition to the attractions around the lake, I would recommend to cross to France and visit Chamonix Have fun!

1. montreux, switzerland.

Nestled in the foots of the Alps, right on the opposite side of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva) you’ll find the beautiful town of Montreux . This is one of the most popular day trip destinations from Geneva as it’s very close, while also so worth visiting.

You can easily reach Montreux from Geneva by train (takes around 1h 10m) or by car (94km), and the journey goes along the coast of the beautiful lake Geneva. The trains between the two cities depart every 20-30 minutes and a ride would cost you anywhere between €20 – €60.

Once you arrive, there’s plenty of things you can do in Montreux to take up a whole day, or even a couple, if you’re able to stay for longer. The most visited attraction here (and one of the most visited ones in all of Switzerland) is the beautiful Chillon Castle. The fortress was built in the 13th century on a small rocky island in the lake, which offered both natural protection and a strategic position.

Montreux is also very famous for its visitors throughout the years. Queen, and more specifically Freddy Mercury, found the town to be very peaceful and inspiring. Montreux was the place where Queen created some of their best-selling albums, and today you can visit their studio free of charge. Right on the promenade there’s also a statue of Freddy Mercury in his iconic pose.

2. Lucerne, Switzerland

An incredible day trip from Geneva is the beautiful city of Lucerne. The city rests comfortably on the shores of Lake Lucerne, the fourth  largest lake in Switzerland. The peaceful lake contrasts with the sharp mountains of Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus.

Most people drive from Geneva to Lucerne. The drive is about  260km or 3 hours long. However, you can also take a train between cities for about $200. Since it’s a bit of a drive, you can spend the night in Lucerne, Bern, or Zurich and see more of Switzerland!

There are plenty of things to do in Lucerne , from enjoying the water on a boat ride or hiking up the Swiss Alps. A boat can take you around the several islands throughout Lake Lucerne. The famous Chapel Bridge is located on Reichenau Island and the Museum of Art & History is on Rütli Island. Both islands contain a lot of history of Lucerne.

For a great place to eat, check out Schiffrestaurant Wilhelm Tell. It’s in a boat on the lake with incredible views. The food is locally sourced and the fondue is exquisite.

3. Zurich, Switzerland

You can get to Zurich from Geneva on the highway in around 2 hours and 30 minutes, alternatively you can take the back roads and fall in love with the charm of some amazing postcard villages on the way.

The highways in Switzerland are heavily tolled so the back roads can save you some money on the 279-kilometer journey between the cities. Trains from Geneva to Zurich take about 2 hours and 45 minutes and run hourly. The train between Geneva and Zurich is a scenic ride that has views of the Swiss countryside.

Zurich is the largest metropolis in Switzerland and is located on the bank of Lake Zurich. A boat tour on Lake Zurich is popular for those that like to soak up the sun or when there’s good weather.

Zurich is a renowned vacation spot that is home to many artistic and cultural attractions, such as the Lindt chocolate factory, the FIFA headquarters, the Kunsthaus in Zurich Art Museum, and many shops and restaurants.

Those who enjoy a spot of shopping Bahnhofstrasse is known as one of the world’s best and most expensive shopping avenues in the world.  The old town of Zurich is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city also has a number of parks and nature reserves. Although Switzerland is not famous for its wine like some of its neighboring countries, it boasts beautiful wine terraces in Lavaux in the southwestern part bordering France. Lavaux is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that remains one of Switzerland’s hidden gems that is just starting to get discovered by international tourists.

It takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes to reach Lavaux from Geneva, and is a perfect spot on your Switzerland itinerary. To reach Lavaux from Geneva, you will need to take a train to Vevey and connect to Chexbres Village. Check the train schedule ahead of your visit here: www.sbb.ch/en

Visitors can explore the 800 hectares of vineyard terraces on foot or by bicycle. Facing the northern shores of Lake Geneva, these spectacular terraces date back to the 11th century. The mild climate in the region is perfect for the lush vineyards where a variety of white wines are produced from a grape that’s called Chaseelas.  Since the grapes are harvested by hand and produced without heavy machinery, the wine-making process is labor-intense and the wine made here is not often exported outside the region.

Since Switzerland is a well-connected country, you can easily get to Lavaux by train from Lausanne. But if you are flying, the closest airport to Lavaux is in Geneva.  Best time to visit this sneak destination is late summer and fall when the temperature is crisp and the sun lights up the sprawling terraces along the lake.

5. Bern, Switzerland

Those who are drawn to medieval history, riverside towns and hillside views should definitely add Bern to their Switzerland itinerary . Located just 1 hour and 50 minutes’ (160km) from Geneva by high speed train or car, Switzerland’s capital makes the perfect day trip.

Lined with undercover arcades to shield visitors from wind and snow, Bern’s cobbled streets are a delight to explore even during the winter months. The entire Altstadt (Old Town) adorned with winding paths and terracotta rooftops is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bern’s star attraction is the Zytglogge, an intricately decorated astronomical clock dating back to the 15th century. The tower itself has served many purposes over the centuries, including guard tower and prison.

Dine at a cafe in the building where Albert Einstein himself once lived, devour Swiss chocolates  from Confisserie Eichenberger, or admire the architecture of Bellevue Palace Hotel and the Grand Casino Bern (even pop in for a game or two!).

Just over an hour southeast of Geneva by car, the French town of Chamonix is the ultimate adventurer’s paradise! Overflowing with activities from winter sports like skiing to relaxing in thermal baths and more adventurous activities like paragliding and white-water rafting, there is no end to the fun that can be had here.

From Geneva Airport, you can hire a private shuttle that will pick you up when you land and drive you directly to your hotel in Chamonix (about €70), or you can jump on a bus for about€40, but it will take you up to an hour and 40 minutes. The total journey is just over 80 kilometers.

Once you arrive, you can take part in endless activities like the ones mentioned above, or you can opt to take a ride on the Montenvers Train to the Panoramic Restaurant, Step into the Void on top of Mont Blanc, or ride the world’s highest ascending cable car up the Aiguille du Midi!

Chamonix is beautiful year-round, but if it’s on your bucket list to go skiing in the Alps, then you should visit in winter. On the other hand, if you prefer to witness the Haute-Savoie region during the blooming season, then the summer months are equally as enchanting!

7. Annecy, France

The impossibly lovely town of Annecy , gently set around the edge of its lake, has long attracted day trippers from Geneva. Until relatively recently, visiting Annecy was almost an expedition. The lack of public transportation forced visitors to battle small borders and twisting, narrow mountain roads. Today, fast buses link the two cities, as does a rapid motorway, cutting travel time down to 45 minutes.

Every single minute is worth the journey to this cobblestoned and arcaded city, which some call “France’s prettiest city”. A beautiful way to discover it is to take a trip around the lake on one of the several ships that ply the many villages along the shore. And once you’re back, it’s time to walk around town. Climb up to the castle or do what everyone does: take a selfie against an impossibly picturesque backdrop.

Because Annecy isn’t far from the Alps, this is a great city to eat cheese, and in winter, every eatery will advertise cheese fondue or tartiflette , a potato and cheese dish. If it’s summer, grab an ice cream from one of the many shops under the arcades. A fabulous day trip can be had by taking a morning hike around one of the neighboring mountains, having a wonderful lunch in town, and discovering the city on foot in the afternoon.

8. Lyon, France

The French gastronomic capital of Lyon is an excellent day trip from Geneva.   Lyon is located about 150km southwest from Geneva, about 1.5 hours by car or two hours by train.  There are many wonderful and unique things to do in Lyon .

If you’re a fan of history, you’ll appreciate a day in this UNESCO World Heritage site.  Marvel at Lyon’s well-preserved Roman ruins, the Amphitheater and Odeon.  Explore Lyon’s famous traboules, secret passageways through buildings.  Traboules were important to Lyon’s silk trade and were also used by the French Resistance in WWII.

If you are a fan of the arts, visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts, France’s second-largest Fine Arts museum.  Be sure not to miss Lyon’s astoundingly detailed trompe-l’oeil murals.  These iconic murals are found mostly in the Croix-Rousse area and cover entire sides of buildings with lifelike realism.

April through October are the best months in which to visit Lyon, but avoid July and August to avoid the crowds.  Be sure to purchase the Lyon City Card during your stay.  This gives you unlimited use of all public transportation, free or discounted access to top attractions, and even free city tours.

4 days Switzerland - 3 itineraries from Geneva

Traveling through Switzerland for four days gives you enough time to get a feel for the country. Finding the perfect itinerary for your vacation isn't easy, though. That's why we've put together a collection of four-day itineraries that all start in Geneva. It shows you three different options, all doable in four days from Geneva.

Four days is a great amount of time to spend in Switzerland if you’ve never been here and want to get a taste of this beautiful country. It’ll just give you some time to see different places without having to rush too much. If you’re planning your trip to Switzerland, the following itineraries will help you with that process.

They are all doable within four days and have their starting point in Geneva. However, if you’d like to start in a different place, you can easily adapt your trip accordingly. Geneva is very well connected and can be reached from every other city in Switzerland. Especially those in western Switzerland like Lausanne, Fribourg, Montreux or even Bern.

You will notice that we only talk about travelling by public transport and not by car. Most itineraries are also possible by car, in case you decide to get a rental during your stay in Switzerland. But with our very dense network of trains and buses, there’s no real need to travel by car.

Of course, the choice is all yours.

Also, if you have more than four days available and see a Switzerland itinerary you like, you can easily stretch it out by spending an extra night at some of the places.

1. Itinerary with lots of mountains, lakes, cities, chocolate and cheese

Highlights on this itinerary

• Day 1: Geneva - Lausanne - Montreux

In the morning, explore Geneva on your own, borrow a free bike with «Genève Roule» or join a guided city tour. After the tour, buy some take-away lunch and have it on the train to Lausanne.

This picturesque old town was built on three hills and is surrounded by countless vineyards. It’s home to the International Olympic Committee, as well as Switzerland’s only metro. Move on to Montreux whenever you’re ready, drop your bags at your accommodation and spend the rest of the day exploring Montreux.

In case you’re interested in castles, don’t miss out on visiting the famous Chillon Castle. To get there, either follow the Promenade by foot, catch a bus or take one of the regularly departing passenger ships.

Even if you’re not keen on going into the castle, we still recommend heading out there and spending some time by the lake. It’s a great place to hang out and take a bunch of jealousy-inducing pictures.

Alternatively, head over to Lavaux. Only a short train ride west of Montreux, you’ll find the famous Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage site. To fully experience the gorgeous views, get off in Cully or Epesses and follow the signposted footpath through the vineyards.

• Day 2: Montreux - Gruyères / Broc - Montreux

After breakfast, catch the train to the very touristy yet wonderful, quaint little village of Gruyères. The ride between Montreux and Montbovon, which is your first leg to Gruyères, is served by regular regional trains as well as the famous Golden Pass Line.

Since Gruyères is highly popular with tourists, it can sometimes get a bit crowded. But like with every busy place, there’s a reason. And in this case, the reason is a mediaeval village and cheese.

Lots of cheese!

The Gruyère cheese factory is right behind the train station and for a small entrance fee, you get to watch how the iconic Gruyère cheese is being made. Samples and tasting opportunities are included.

Once you’re done snacking, either catch the bus uphill or follow the path until you reach the village centre of Gruyères. This walk should take you around 20 minutes. After exploring the hidden cobblestone alleys, checking out the castle and maybe grabbing a souvenir or two, you have the option to head to Broc and visit La Maison Cailler.

Their visitor centre teaches you everything you need to know about Switzerland’s oldest chocolate brand and at the end of the tour, you’ll get to taste a lot of free samples.

More than you thought you could handle.

On your train ride back to Montreux, try to digest your cheese and chocolate overdose and get ready to spend the night by Lake Geneva.

Now, you do have the option to trade in the chocolate and cheese frenzy for some glacier action. Instead of heading to Gruyères, catch the train to Col-du-Pillon and visit Glacier 3000.

The 360-degree views are astonishing and if you’re brave enough, the Peak Walk across the suspension bridge is an experience you’ll likely never forget.

• Day 3: Montreux - Fribourg - Bern

Spend the morning covering some more ground in Montreux. Whenever you’re ready to move on, catch the train to Fribourg.

In Fribourg, follow the citywalk signs leading you through this mighty old town. The signs will lead you up and down some very steep alleyways, across ancient wooden bridges, down to the River Saane and past the city’s very own funicular. For an even better view of your surroundings, tackle the 365 steps to the tower of the Cathedral. The River Saane at the bottom of the city is a great spot to stretch your legs and treat yourself to a snack.

Once you’ve seen enough of this mediaeval town, catch the train to Bern, the capital of Switzerland.

Getting to Bern from Fribourg takes less than half an hour. Spend the rest of the evening strolling through the UNESCO listed old town of Bern. For an impressive night view over Bern, we recommend heading up to Rosengarten.

Today, you’ve got plenty of activities to choose from. Join a guided city tour or explore Bern on your own. Take a stroll through the old town, head to the bear park, check out the Bundeshaus (House of Parliament) and walk back up to Rosengarten for more views.

You can also visit Gurten – Bern’s backyard mountain – see some animals at Dählhölzli wildlife park or visit the botanical garden. Alternatively, catch the elevator at the train station to hang out at Grosse Schanze or go for a swim either in the River Aare or at Weyermannshaus.

Oh the agony of choice...

Toward the end of the day, catch the train back to Geneva and spend the rest of the day exploring Switzerland’s largest city.

• Upon check-in at your accommodation in Montreux and Bern, you’ll receive a Transport Card that lets you use local transport for free.
• Access to Chillon Castle is free if you have a Swiss Travel Pass. And even if you’re not keen on going into the castle, seeing it from the outside is still worth the trip.
• When travelling from Montreux to Gruyères, you’ll need to transfer in Montbovon. The ride between Montreux and Montbovon is served by regular regional trains as well as the scenic Golden Pass Line. Since this section is often booked out, Golden Pass customer service recommends reserving a seat for this segment. However, if you catch the regional train, you don’t need to worry about that.
• You can also book the chocolate train, which will take you straight from Montreux to the Cailler chocolate factory in Broc. This is also served by the Golden Pass Line.

2. Itinerary with the highlights of western Switzerland including lakes, cities and mountains

• Walk through the picturesque vineyards of Nyon
• Explore the mediaeval city of Lausanne
• Hike to the Dent de Vaulion for some impressive Jura-views
• Have a glass of wine in the Lavaux vineyard terraces (UNESCO)

• Day 1: Geneva - Nyon - Lausanne

In the morning, explore Geneva on your own, borrow a free bike with «Genève Roule» or join a guided city tour. After the tour, buy some take-away lunch and have it on the train to Nyon.

This mediaeval town by the shore of Lake Geneva is surrounded by a couple of charming vineyards. Follow the path through the vineyards to Nyon Castle to take in the view. After your lunch break, catch the train to Lausanne. Check in to your accommodation and make the most of your free Lausanne Transport Card.

Lausanne’s picturesque old town is built on three hills and surrounded by numerous vineyards. It’s home to the International Olympic Committee, as well as Switzerland’s only metro.

To hear something interesting, head to the Cathedral between 10 pm and 2 am and observe the tower. Night guards have been shouting out the current time in the middle of the night from up there since 1405.

• Day 2: Lausanne - Lac de Joux / Creux du Van - Lausanne

After breakfast, buy enough food for the day and head straight to Le Pont, a village in the Valleé de Joux. The train ride from Lausanne to the valley takes roughly an hour. Vallée de Joux is part of the Jura mountains and offers countless hiking options. In the centre of the valley, you’ll find a peaceful lake called Lac de Joux.

By far the most popular spot in the area is the distinctive mountain of Dent de Vaulion. Hiking the circular path from Le Pont takes around three hours. The views from Dent de Vaulion across the Vallée de Joux, all the way to Lake Geneva and way into France, make this place extra special.

Since you’ve got all day up here, spend as much time in the area as you like. Hang out by Lac de Joux, walk the path around the lake or do whatever else your heart desires. Whenever you feel like it, catch the train back to Lausanne and spend the rest of the day exploring the city.

If you’re in for a bit of a challenge, we recommend hiking to Creux du Van instead. This natural, one-kilometre wide amphitheatre got its shape from constant erosion by water and ice. Marmots, mountain goats, deer and various birds inhabit this area.

The starting point of the hike is in Noiraigue, a village that takes roughly an hour and a half to reach from Lausanne. Hiking to Creux du Van is pretty tough and will take up to five hours. Spend as much time as you like at the amphitheatre before heading back to Noiraigue and Lausanne.

Of course, Switzerland gets its fair share of bad weather and we don’t suggest you do this hike if it’s raining. The rocks can get slippery and dangerous when they’re wet and we don’t want you to get hurt!

• Day 3: Lausanne - Lavaux - Montreux

In the morning, cover some more ground in Lausanne before moving on to Montreux. Drop your luggage at your accommodation and head out again. Montreux has plenty to offer. Walk to the Promenade and check out the Freddie Mercury statue just outside the market hall.

Alternatively, head in the opposite direction toward Vevey, where you’ll find a stunning riviera and many interesting museums. Only a short train ride west of Montreux, you’ll find the famous Lavaux vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

To fully experience the gorgeous views, get off in Cully or Epesses and follow the signposted footpath through the vineyards.

• Day 4: Montreux - Glacier 3000 - Geneva

If you’ve come to Switzerland for the mountains, the glaciers, the views and the snow, today’s your day. Leave Montreux first thing in the morning and catch the train to Col-du-Pillon.

Hop on the cable car and enjoy the ride. At the top, you’ll be presented with the most astonishing 360-degree views. On a clear day, you can see several huge players in the alpine scene like the Matterhorn, the Mont Blanc massif and the popular mountain-trio Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

If you’re brave enough, tackle the Peak Walk to Scex Rouge. This is the world’s first suspension bridge connecting two peaks. Crossing this bridge is an experience you’ll likely never forget.

Whenever you’re ready, catch the train back to Montreux to grab your stuff before moving on to Geneva for the rest of the day.

• Upon check-in at your accommodation in Lausanne and Montreux, you’ll receive a Transport Card that allows you to use local transport for free in both cities.
• If you’re interested, you can catch the passenger ship from Lausanne to Montreux instead of the train. There’s a direct connection leaving Lausanne around midday and takes just over an hour and a half.

3. Itinerary to the highest mountains in the Swiss Alps including the Matterhorn

• Hike or ski until your feet fall off in Saas Fee
• Find yourself surrounded by Switzerland’s tallest mountains
• Go on a hike at the base of the famous Matterhorn
• Check out the Gorner Glacier at Gornergrat
• Ride parts of the scenic Glacier Express Line
• Day 1: Geneva - Lausanne - Zermatt

This picturesque old town was built on three hills and is surrounded by countless vineyards. It’s home to the International Olympic Committee, as well as Switzerland’s only metro. The upcoming train ride into the mountains takes around three hours, so don’t spend too much time exploring Lausanne.

Between Visp and Zermatt, you’ll be completing the final leg of the Glacier Express Line. This ride is exceptionally scenic so make sure you have your camera within reach. Once you arrive in Zermatt, spend the rest of the day strolling through this little mountain town and enjoy the sight of the mighty Matterhorn.

• Day 2: Free day in Zermatt

Zermatt is all about mountains and the outdoors. If you’ve come to Switzerland for our spectacular mountain views, you’re going to love it here.

Several hikes and walks of all difficulty levels take you places you didn’t even know existed. Like for instance the popular Zermatt five-lakes trail, which takes 2.5 hours to complete. It leads past five crystal clear mountain lakes with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn.

Another impressive, yet head spinning adventure, is walking across the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Randa. It stretches 494 metres (1.620 feet) across the valley.

Hello vertigo!

The circular track starts and finishes in Randa, 15 minutes by train from Zermatt.

In case you’d rather skip the hiking altogether and see some mountains the easy way, we recommend heading up to Gornergrat. After a ridiculously steep train ride, you’ll find yourself at an altitude of 3089 metres (10.135 feet) above sea level. Right in front of the Gorner Glacier and the Matterhorn.

Don’t be surprised if climbing those steps to the viewpoint leaves you completely breathless. It’s not you, it’s the thin air.

• Day 3: Zermatt - Saas-Fee

It’s up to you how much time you spend in Zermatt this morning. Do what you need to do before moving on to Saas-Fee.

Saas-Fee, also known as the pearl of the Alps, is surrounded by Switzerland’s tallest mountains. As you arrive in this miraculous alpine village, you’ll find yourself in the midst of 13 mountains that are all over 4000 metres (13.120 feet) above sea level.

If you’re visiting during summer, your hiking options are nearly endless. Over 350 kilometres (217 miles) of hiking trails take you places you never even knew existed. And while we’re at it, don’t forget to look out for marmots during your hike. Your chances of spotting a couple of those cute, chubby alpine inhabitants aren’t too slim up here.

Swiss Glacier World, the self-announced highest playground in the world, might also be a place you’d like to visit. After all, who wouldn’t want to zipline across a glacier?

But Saas-Fee isn’t only interesting during hiking season. If you’re here in winter, you can absolutely ski or snowboard yourself silly. And with Saas-Fee being at such high altitude, you’ll partially be skiing on top of a glacier. Not something you get to do every day.

Over 150 kilometres (93 miles) of prepared slopes will keep you busy for as long as you please. And while other ski resorts have been struggling with a lack of snow these past few years – with global warming and all – you’re almost certain to find enough snow in Saas-Fee due to its high altitude.

Knock yourself out enjoying the mountain views, the snow, the hikes, the marmots and the fresh air.

• Day 4: Saas-Fee - Geneva

It’s really up to you how you plan out your day today. One option is to stay in Saas-Fee for a little while longer and keep hiking, looking for marmots, skiing, snowshoeing, ziplining across glaciers or whatever else it was you set your mind to.

Alternatively, if you’ve had enough of the thin air and are ready to head back down, stop over somewhere along the way back to Geneva.

The choice is yours.

• If you’re itching to get into the mountains and don’t care much for Lausanne, forget about that stopover and head straight to Zermatt. This will give you more time to explore everything the Swiss outdoors have to offer.
• The part between Brig and Zermatt is served by the Glacier Express trains. Those leave three times daily and are only for people with a reservation. But there are regular trains commuting between Brig and Zermatt that don’t require a reservation. The best part? The views are exactly the same as with the Glacier Express. Minus the large panoramic windows.

Having spent extensive time in Switzerland over the years, this itinerary is based on my own experience doing this exact route during my most recent visit.

Tip: The route is entirely using public transport and would benefit from a Swiss Pass .

Switzerland Itinerary: 5 Days from Geneva

For this itinerary, you will start in Geneva (one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland ).

Here is a quick overview of your trip:

• Day 1 – Arrive in Geneva, Travel to Montreux (Via Lausanne)
• Day 2 – Full Day in Montreux
• Day 3 – Golden Pass Train Journey (With a Stop in Interlaken)
• Day 4 – Lucerne
• Day 5 – Day Trips From Lucerne, Depart from Zurich or Bern

Day 1: Arrive in Geneva, Travel to Montreux (Via Lausanne)

This 5-days itinerary in Switzerland assumes that you are flying in and out of Switzerland and will be using public transportation to get around.

Geneva is one of the cheapest airports in Europe to fly into so that’s where we’ll begin the journey.

Unfortunately, there’s not a lot to do in Geneva, but if you have time to spare, I recommend checking out the St. Pierre Cathedral, you can go inside for free and you can climb the tower for 5 Swiss Franc.

If they want to visit a country near Switzerland , France is easy to reach, however, I would suggest adding at least an additional day to your itineraries to fit it in!

How to Get From Geneva to Montreux (Via Lausanne)

There are several ways to get from Geneva to Montreux, the easiest and fastest is using the train, this takes around 1 hour and costs around 25CHF.

However, if you are willing to pay a little more, instead of going around the lake, you can head straight across using the Lake Geneva ferry service.

You won’t be able to go straight from Geneva to Montreux on a ferry, you’ll need to change in Lausanne.

But instead of hopping off one ferry and straight onto another, I recommend aiming to fit in an hour or two for exploring Lausanne.

Keep in mind that the boat trip is far more expensive than the train, you’ll end up paying more than twice as much, so it’s not for those on a budget.

Things To Do in Lausanne

If you do manage to stop in Lausanne, here are some attractions to check out during the afternoon:

1. Explore the Old Town (Vieille Ville)

Take a walk through Lausanne’s charming Old Town, filled with narrow streets, historic buildings, and quaint shops.

Don’t forget to stop by at the Gothic Lausanne Cathedral which offers the best views from the tower.

2. Visit the Olympic Museum

Lausanne is most famous as the home of the International Olympic Committee so there are several landmarks around the town recognizing this as well as the Olympic Museum which has interactive exhibits showcasing the history, achievements, and memorabilia of the Olympic Games.

Remember that we are only spending a few hours in Lausanne, you will need to make your way to Montreux, where you will spend 2 nights.

Where to Stay in Montreux

After Lausanne, head to Montreux and check in to your accommodation where you’ll be spending the next two nights .

Day 3: Ride the Golden Pass Train (via Interlaken)

Today, you’re going to ride the Golden Pass, one of Switzerland’s iconic scenic train journeys.

Thanks to an upgrade in 2022 which allows the train to jump between tracks (yes – this is true), there are now only two legs to this journey. Montreux to Interlaken then Interlaken to Lucerne.

I recommend leaving Montreux on the 9:35 am train which runs year-round (this is your only option in off-peak season between December and June so you can’t miss it).

The first leg takes around 3hrs15 so you’ll arrive in Interlaken in the early afternoon.

Things To Do in Interlaken

Interlaken is a beautiful little alpine town in the Swiss mountains, nestled between two stunning lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

It’s known as the adventure capital of Switzerland where you can do paragliding, rafting, bungee jumping, and more.

With only a short stop in the town, you won’t have much time for any of these, however, you can still spend time exploring the town’s charming streets and enjoying the quaint Swiss atmosphere.

There are numerous cafes and restaurants within walking distance of the train station where you can grab a bite to eat on your layover.

Traveling From Interlaken to Lucerne

The second leg of your journey, from Interlaken to Lucerne, takes 2 hours with trains departing every hour at 4-past the hour until the final service at 20:04.

Judge for yourself which one you’d like to take based on how much time you want in Interlaken.

Where To Stay in Lucerne

Whilst there are several luxury resorts around Lucerne, this is a jam-packed itinerary so it’s best to stay in Altstadt (Old Town) where you’ll be within easy reach of everything.

Free Walk Lucerne offers free walking tours at 11 am every day except Tuesday and Thursday. If it’s not running today, you’ll have time to fit it in the next day instead.

Although this is a free walking tour, the model is for you to leave a tip according to what you think the tour was worth.

The tour should take you to some of Lucerne’s top landmarks, but if you’d rather discover these for yourself, make sure to stop by Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), a famous wooden bridge with a tower that dates to the 14 th century.

And the Lion Monument which is a moving sculpture carved into a rock face to commemorate the Swiss Guards who lost their lives during the French Revolution.

2. Explore the Old Town (Altstadt)

Take a stroll through Lucerne’s charming Old Town, with its narrow cobblestone streets and well-preserved medieval architecture.

Explore the colorful buildings, boutique shops, and small cafes.

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the charming Weinmarkt Square and the Rathaus (Town Hall).

3. Swiss Museum of Transport

The Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne is a fascinating museum that showcases the history and development of transportation in Switzerland.

Day 5: Day Trips From Lucerne, Leave from Zurich or Bern

On your second day in Lucerne, it would be a good idea to take a day trip up one of the nearby mountains.

You have two options to choose from:

Option 1: Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi is easily accessible from Lucerne.

Not only does it have incredible views and leisurely hikes for all abilities, but there are several hotels up there that have spa facilities.

To reach the summit, catch a boat from Lucerne to Vitznau and then take the cogwheel train up to Rigi Kulm which is the best viewpoint with panoramic views.

In total, it takes around 2 hours to reach Rigi Kulm from Lucerne, but make sure you check the latest timetables to plan your trip.

You can return the same way, however, some people choose to catch another train to  Rigi-Kaltbad and return via the cable car.

If you want to make life super easy for this last day, then I highly recommend you book this 7-hour tour which includes the scenic boat cruise, the cogwheel train, and cable cars.

Option 2: Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus is known for its rugged peaks, deep valleys, and picturesque landscapes.

It’s more adventurous than Rigi, not just in terms of getting there, but also in terms of the activities at the top. It’s a popular destination for hiking, climbing, and paragliding.

The easiest way to visit Mount Pilatus from Lucerne is to take the 15-min bus to Kriens and then take a cable car up the mountain.

Alternatively, you can take the train or ferry to Alpnachstad and then go up on the cogwheel train. This option is only available during peak season.

Many people like to go up on the cable car and down on the cogwheel train, this is known as the Golden Round Trip. You can get a ticket to do this by yourself on Get Your Guide , or you can take a guided tour .

Getting Home From Lucerne

Lucerne doesn’t have its own airport, but luckily you’re now close to both Zurich and Bern which have lots of international flights.

To finish your trip, head straight to the airport of your choice (Zurich is much easier to reach):

• Lucerne to Zurich Airport: Zurich Airport has a railway station with regular direct trains from Lucerne that take around an hour.
• Lucerne to Bern Airport: To reach Bern airport, you’ll first need to catch a train from Lucern to Bern Hbf which takes around 1hr20. You’ll then need to take the S-Barn to the airport which takes another 30 minutes.

GENEVA — Switzerland’s government said Wednesday it will host a high-level international conference in June to help chart a path toward peace in Ukraine after more than two years of war, and expressed hope that Russia might join in the peace process someday.

The lakeside Bürgenstock resort near Lucerne is expected to host the June 15-16 gathering that will draw top government officials from dozens of countries, following up on a plan laid out in recent months by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.

The top Swiss diplomat said more than 100 countries would be invited to the gathering.

“The first country that we spoke with, after Ukraine of course, was Russia, because a peace process cannot happen without Russia, even if it won’t be there for the first meeting” Cassis told reporters in the Swiss capital, Bern.

Swiss daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung reported that President Joe Biden may attend. He is expected to be in Italy during that time for the G7 leaders meeting, though the White House has not confirmed his attendance.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned last week that prospective negotiations to end the fighting in Ukraine could be successful only if they take Moscow’s interests into account, dismissing a planned round of peace talks as a Western ruse to rally broader international support for Kyiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said there will be no peace in Ukraine until Russia’s goals are met.

“We’re not going to sign the peace deal at this conference,” said Viola Amherd, the Swiss president. She called the meeting a “first step” in a process toward a lasting peace in Ukraine that could lead to a second, follow-up gathering.

“It has to be clear from the start that Russia — sooner or later — has to be there,” Foreign Minister Cassis said. “Now, it’s not mandatory that it’s there the first day. We could also imagine that on the first day, people might agree about how to better invite in Russia.”

“We have to agree: That’s the backbreaking work ahead of us,” he added.

The Swiss government said early talks toward arranging the conference involved the European Union and envoys from the so-called Global South, including Brazil, China, Ethiopia, India, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.

Cassis acknowledged “some unknowns” leading up to the conference, but cited a Swiss tradition of shuttle diplomacy between rival sides and Switzerland’s feeling of “responsibility” to contribute to the peace process in Ukraine.

U.S. participation was “essential,” he said, and the United States had confirmed its participation to the Swiss, though he didn’t specify at what level.

Zelenskyy has presented a 10-point peace formula that, among other things, seeks the expulsion of all Russian forces from Ukraine and accountability for war crimes as the two sides continue to fight along the roughly 1,500-kilometer (930-mile) front line. Moscow has promptly rejected such ideas.

Much of the diplomatic uncertainty has centered on whether Russia’s key ally China might attend — and Cassis pressed for Beijing’s support during a trip to China last month. Beijing has presented its own 12-point proposal to end the fighting in Ukraine more than a year ago.

China’s Foreign Ministry has said that Beijing supports a conference that’s accepted by both Russia and Ukraine, which isn’t the case so far.
