The most important landmark in the city, Gwalior Fort stands on a steep land of sandstone. This grandeur was built to honour the saint Gwalipa. As per folklore, when the monarch was ill, sage Gwalipa offered him water from a sacred pond to cure him, that is still inside the Gwalior fort complex. The fort has witnessed important incidents, imprisonments, conflicts, and jauhars. Jain tirthankara statues carved into the rock face border the steep road leading up to the fort. The fort's majestic outside walls, which are two miles long and 35 feet high, continue to remain, attesting to its reputation as one of India's most impregnable forts. 

Jai Vilas Palace

The Jai Vilas Palace , where the Scindia family currently resides, exhibits the beauty of a royal interior. The Jivaji Rao Scindia Museum is made up of about 25 rooms, and in these regal-styled spaces, the past truly comes to life. The Italianate Jai Vilas building blends Corinthian and Tuscan architectural styles. The two massive central chandeliers in the grand Darbar Hall were only hung after ten elephants tested the stability of the roof. They each weigh several tonnes. The characteristics of these large rooms include gilt-accented ceilings, thick curtains and tapestries, exquisite Persian rugs, and antique furniture from France and Italy.

Teli ka Mandir

Teli Ka Mandir , a historic religious temple renowned for its Dravidian architecture and intricate artwork, is the tallest building inside the Gwalior Fort complex. As per folk stories, the temple was built with the money donated by oil merchants. Hence, the name Teli Ka Mandir came into existence. Tourists can also find this information in the inscription written on the main gate of the temple. It is about 100 feet tall, and its design combines Hindu and Buddhist elements. The earliest temple in the fort was built either in the eighth or eleventh century. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and features constructions within with coiled serpents and river goddesses as well as Lord Vishnu in the guise of his mount, "Garuda."

The 19th-century Moti Mahal, one of the most historic structures in the city, is surrounded by beautiful gardens and fountains. It was originally a Madhya Bharat Government office, but it is currently home to government offices. Highlights of this palace include the wall murals, mosaics, and gorgeous tempera colours that represent Ragas and Raginis.

Sas Bahu Temple

The Sas-Bahu Temple, which is housed inside the Gwalior Fort, consists of two elaborately carved red sandstone temples. Lord Shiva is honoured in the smaller one, while Lord Vishnu is honoured in the larger. Contrary to what the name might imply, this temple is named after Lord Vishnu's incarnation, Sahastrabahu. In the eleventh century, Kacchapaghata Dynasty King Mahipala built this iconic temple.

Gopachal Parvat

Gopachal Parvat, a well-known series of rock-cut inside the Gwalior Fort, is the best location to view ancient Jain imagery. It is the location of a collection of rock-cut sculptures with carvings from the seventh to the fifteenth centuries. If you're a history or architectural junky, this place would awe you with its grandeur. Here, the statue of Tirthankaras might be seen standing or sitting during their meditation. For followers of Jainism, it is one of the most significant locations in Gwalior.

Gujari Mahal

The palace was built by King Man Singh for his beloved queen Mrignayani. She was one of the queens of Raja Mansing. King's love and devotion towards his brave Gujar Queen, Mrignayani, is memorialised in the Gujari Mahal from the fifteenth century. 

While the interior of Gujari Mahal has been transformed into an archaeological museum housing rare artefacts, some of which date back to the first century A.D., the exterior building has survived in an almost perfect condition of preservation. Many medieval architectural wonders can be found inside the fort. Their perfection of form has endured the ravages of time, despite the fact that many of these were destroyed by the iconoclastic Mughals. The statue of Shalbhanjika from Gyraspur, the tree goddess and miniature representation of perfection, is very noteworthy. The curator of the museum is in charge of keeping the statue, and visitors may view it upon request.

Sun Temple, also known as Surya Mandir, is another pride for Gwalior. It was constructed in 1988, and the Sun Temple of Konark served as  inspiration for its design. The temple's red sandstone exteriors make it the ideal location for dawn and sunset photo shooting. White marble was used to carve the statues inside the temple. The temple welcomes a number of visitors and pilgrims every year.

Ghaus Mohammed Tomb

Another early Mughal-inspired structure is the sandstone tomb of Ghaus Mohammed. He was the Prince of Afghanistan who later became a Sufi saint. According to legends, Mohammad Ghaus occupies a significant position in the history of Mughal India and is said to have had great influence over Mughal emperors like Babur and Humayun. He is also considered as the spiritual guru of Tansen. It is said that that the music of Tansen was very much inspired from the music of Ghaus Mohammed. The screens made in the delicate lace perforated stone method are especially beautiful. On the approach to Gwalior Fort from the Railway Station, it is close to Hazira.

Tansen Tomb

A simple structure of the Tomb of Tansen can be seen a short distance away from the Tomb of Muhammad Ghaus. Tansen was one of the legends and pioneers of Indian classical music and the most famous singer during Akbar's rule and one among the nine jewels of the court. 

Every year in November and December, a grand music event is held at his tomb. Here, musicians and artists from all over the world come to honour the legendary Indian musical maestro Tansen. India-wide performers of both vocal and instrumental music are invited.

Places to visit near Gwalior

Bateshwar group of temples.

The Bateshwar Hindu Temple is group of temples of roughly 200 sandstone Hindu temples constructed by the Gurjar monarchs in Morena. These temple groups are examples of early Gurjara-Pratihara style temple construction. It is located approximately 30 kilometres (19 miles) from Morena city and about 35 kilometres (22 miles) north of Gwalior. The temples are dispersed over around 25 acres devoted to Shiva, Vishnu, and Shakti, which stand for the three main Hindu religions. Bateshwar temples were constructed between the eighth and tenth centuries.

The Jat Ranas of Dhaulpur, who ruled in the 18th century, constructed the renowned Padavali fort. The fort features a temple that was a sacred location to worship Lord Shiva and is graciously guarded by a lion and lioness. Every stone used in the construction of the temple and the fortification has an inscription or other indication of the ancient time period on it!

National Chambal Ghariyal Wildlife Sanctuary 

The sanctuary is perfect for nature lovers and trekkers everywhere, it is located on the Chambal River near the tripoint of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The area is designated as sanctuary in order to protect the critically endangered gharial, the red-crowned roof turtle and the endangered Ganges river dolphin. Other large threatened species of the sanctuary include mugger crocodile, striped hyena, Indian wolf and smooth-coated otter. Other reptiles who live in the sanctuary are Indian flapshell turtle, Indian tent turtle, soft shell turtle, monitor lizard and Indian roofed turtle.

Gwalior Fort

The imposing Gwalior Fort rises dramatically above the city of Gwalior on a central hillock, Gopachal . It’s thought to be one of the most invincible forts in India and thus was rightfully called the Gibraltar of India .

I prefer to read about the history of a place before I make a visit there. I’d recommend you get a bit of insight into the city of Gwalior and its history. It makes your trip more fun and meaningful.

If reading isn’t what you like, go watch the sound and light show at Gwalior Fort the night before you plan to explore the fort. Amitabh Bachchan successfully makes history interesting with his profound voice and captivating way of storytelling.

Most of the famous attractions in Gwalior are in fact inside the Gwalior Fort premises. Inside the fort are numerous palaces, temples, and other historical structures built by different rulers.

The fort has two entrances. Urwahi Gate is accessible by car and Qila Gate or Gwalior Gate is accessible only by a walk along the ramp.

If you enter the fort through Urwahi Gate, don’t miss the sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras carved into the rock face on the way to the fort. Sarod Ghar aka Kala Vithika , a museum housed in the ancestral home of a sarod maestro, Amjad Ali Khan exhibits the ancient musical instruments that belong to geniuses of Hindustani classical music and old books, documents, and portraits.

Tombs of Muhammad Ghaus and Tansen

The mausoleum of Muhammad Ghaus , a 16th-century Sufi saint and mentor of a celebrated singer, and composer of his times and one of the Navratnas (nine jewels) in Akbar’s court, Tansen is situated in Hazira aka Old Town.

In the same garden complex, right next to the tomb is a Samadhi of Tansen (Tansen Memorial). Come December, the complex becomes the site for the famed musical event, Tansen Samaroh or Tansen Sangeet Samaroh that attracts music lovers from all across the country.

A tamarind tree near Tansen’s grave is a special one. A saint sitting near the tree told us that if you eat a leaf or two from the tree, your voice becomes as melodious as Tansen’s. That’s another thing you should definitely do while you’re here because you never know 🙂

Samadhi Rani Laxmi Bai

Located in the Phool Bagh complex, the Samadhi of Rani Laxmi Bai is a tribute to the great woman warrior of Jhansi, Rani Laxmi Bai famously known as Jhansi ki Rani who bravely fought with the British in 1857.

Looking at the tall statue of Jhansi ki Rani filled me with pride and I saluted the undaunting spirit and sacrifice of the great queen warrior.

About 23 km from Gwalior, Tighra Dam or Tig Dam on the Sank River is a nice recreation or picnic spot. There are many activities on and off the water like boating, jalpari cruises, river rafting, parasailing, and rock climbing for adventure lovers.

Or you can just sit and relax while appreciating the serenity and beauty of the region.

Jai Vilas Palace makes it to the list of things to do in Gwalior, mostly. But I didn’t find it worthy enough for the amount of time and entrance price it demands.

Summers are harsh here. The exploration becomes almost impossible with day temperatures soaring as high as 45 degrees Celsius.

Spring (March to May) can also be considered as the weather is comfortably warm and pleasant mostly.

How to Get to Gwalior

Gwalior is located in the northern part of the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India and is well-connected by air, rail, and road to Delhi and other major cities in India.

The nearest airport is Gwalior Airport. Air India has a direct flight from Delhi to Gwalior that takes an hour to reach.

SpiceJet runs direct flights from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Jammu, and Kolkata to Gwalior.

The second nearest airport, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Airport, Agra has more regular connections from other major cities in India and is 126 km from Gwalior.

Gwalior Junction (main railway station) has direct trains from Delhi. The train journey takes about 5 hours. Grand Trunk Express from New Delhi to Chennai, Kerala Express from New Delhi to Thiruvananthapuram, Kalinga Utkal Express from Hazrat Nizammudin to Puri, Dehradun Indore Express, and Shridham Express from New Delhi to Jabalpur are some of the regular trains.

Habibganj New Delhi Shatabdi Express is the fastest that takes less than 4 hours to reach Gwalior. Also, it leaves Delhi quite early in the morning and saves your day.

Gwalior Fort

Described by the Mughal Emperor Babur as the ‘crown jewel among Indian forts’, this historic monument is a must-visit for people of all inclinations and ages. Jai Vilas Palace

The Jai Vilas Palace, also known as the Jai Vilas Mahal, is a museum that offers a glimpse into the grandiose lifestyle of the royal family of the city. It was established in 1874 by Jayajirao Scindia, and is still the residence of some of his descendants. With over thirty rooms to explore, it can take up to an entire day to examine every corner of this beautiful museum. This magnificent palace is also one of the best places to witness lavish, quirky, spectacular works of art. Every piece of artefact and furniture has a story, and the palace gardens are a sight to behold.

Saas Bahu Temples

The name, history, and architecture of this landmark are all equally fascinating. Built by King Mahipala and dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this place was originally known as the Sahastrabahu Temple. Over the years, the name changed to Saas Bahu perhaps by misinterpretation or mispronunciation. The magnificent temple has three gateways facing in three different directions and exhibits exquisitely carved idols of Lords Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva at the doorway. Brilliant carvings and the elaborate structure of this temple speak volumes about the artistic expertise of the artisans and sculptors in the era.

Gujari Mahal (State Archaeological Museum)

The Gwalior Mahal Archaeological Museum, sometimes called the Gwalior Fort Museum, is flush with 28 galleries and over 9000 artifacts. The landmark was originally a palace built by King Man Singh for his wife Mrignayini, who was a Gujar. Hence the palace acquired the name, Gujari Mahal. The fort has witnessed many ups and downs, changing hands from one ruler to another. Precious stones, jewels, terracotta objects, weapons, artifacts, sculptures, paintings, inscriptions, pottery, etc. are on display here. Jain and Hindu sculptures dating back to the 1st and 2nd century are also part of the set of rare artifacts at the museum. 

Tansen’s Tomb

One of the greatest musicians of India – an eminent vocalist, and one of the nine gems in the court of Akbar – Tansen, was from Gwalior. He was believed to create magic and enrapture audiences with his music. His tomb, surrounded by rich gardens, has a typical Mughal architectural style. Apart from being a beautiful monument, the place also serves as a testament to Gwalior’s cultural heritage. The final resting place of the fabled and famous musician is tucked away in a garden complex about a kilometre away from the Gwalior fort’s east entrance. The annual Tansen Samaroh is held here during the months of November-December every year where prominent musicians from all over the country come to deliver Indian classical music performances. 

Teli ka Mandir

Telika Temple is an ancient complex well-known for its elegant architecture. This is a towering and extraordinary temple located in the complex of the Gwalior fort. The temple is said to have been built in the mid-eighth century and sits atop a hill in the city centre. The architecture portrays a beautiful blend of northern and southern styles, complete with a gigantic image of the Garuda (the Mount of Lord Vishnu). This unusual image makes the circlet of the doorway, which is the highest structure in the fortress. The outer surfaces of the temple, especially walls and doorways, are carved with coiled serpents, amorous couples, goddesses, and gods.

The Sun Temple, or Surya Mandir, is one of the most remarkable architectural wonders that adorn the city of Gwalior. As suggested by the name, this temple is dedicated to the Sun God, and is thronged by pilgrims and tourists all through the year. The temple is a splendid amalgamation of red sandstone and pearly white marble. Built by the eminent industrialist G. D. Birla, this temple is a replica of the Konark Sun Temple amidst manicured gardens. You can find intricate carvings depicting various Gods and Goddesses on the walls of the temple. Around the temple are statues, accompanied by descriptions, of various saints with priceless inscriptions.
