Protoje shares how he has found inner peace over the pandemic in his new song and video “Hills”. Seeking restoration and seclusion, the Jamaican wordsmith has had time to realign with nature’s gifts and cut off the outside noise. Boasting a vibrating Jamaican dub baseline fused with hip-hop, the hard-hitting anthem (produced by 8TRACK & IV The Polymath) is a precursor of what’s ahead for Protoje. “Hills” is the first single off his summer album, out via In.Digg.Nation Collective / RCA Records.

Its video, directed by Samo, gives us an inside look into his domain and his journey to wellness. Set high above sea level in the hills of Jamaica, The Habitat is where the artist calls home. From fresh air, herb, fruit and water to daily runs and meditations in the hilltops, the openness of his tropical surroundings provide a sense of clarity—to feel without distractions.

Jesse Royal

Jesse Royal is an internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter, performer, and recording artist from Kingston, Jamaica. Through vivid storytelling rooted in the belief of a universal truth, his music carries a message of hope, strength, love, and consciousness. Not just a musician, Royal is a father, a community activist, a thought leader, and a global citizen guided by his spirituality and sense of righteousness.

Born in the spring of 1989, Jesse spent his early years in the hills of Maroon Town and the District of Orange in St. James before moving in the late 90’s with his mother and brother to join his father in Kingston. As fate would have it, Royal developed a special relationship with Daniel ‘Bambaata’ Marley (son of Ziggy Marley) at school. His friendship with Marley proved to be fuel to the fire as they shared a deep passion for music and football. As these cubs became lions, so grew their devotion to music. With the help of longtime friend Curt ‘Qban’ White, they began composing and creating their own music. And together they proceeded to fulfill what they knew was a predestined musical journey, designed to inspire, engage, and unite people beyond all geographic borders.

Over the course of his career, Jesse Royal has been blessed to collaborate and create with some of the world’s most respected artists, musicians, and producers, including Sean Paul, Vybz Kartel, Protoje, Chronixx, Noise Cans, Steve Aoki, Damian Marley, Major Lazer, and many others.

In 2017, Jesse Royal began his relationship with the internationally-known label Easy Star Records, releasing his debut album, Lily of da Valley, which he co-executive produced along with Lamar “Riff Raff” Brown. The record featured legendary musicians Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Donald Dennis, Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith, and Monty Savory. The album was received with critical acclaim and topped the Billboard Reggae Album charts.

In 2019, Jesse Royal released “LionOrder” featuring Protoje (produced by GRAMMY-nominated producer Sean Alaric), followed by the single “Natty Pablo” in 2020, as part of the roll-out for his highly anticipated full-length sophomore album, Royal, slated for June 2021.

Lila Iké (pronounced Lee-lah Eye-kay) is one of the freshest new voices on Jamaica's music scene. As the latest addition to the In.Digg.Nation Collective, a record label and talent pool for Jamaican creatives started by reggae star Protoje, the fast-rising singer is gaining attention at home and abroad with her distinctive delivery and old-school sensibilities with tracks such as Second Chance, Biggest Fan, and her recent collaboration with Protoje, Not Another Word (feat. Agent Sasco).

Protoje reminds fans that the pursuit for peace is as much mental as it is a physical journey on “ Incient Stepping ,” his next single and video to drop from his anticipated summer LP ( In.Digg.Nation Collective/RCA Records ).

Following his latest single “ Hills ,” in which he revealed his secret location for solace in Jamaica’s fertile mountain ranges, he finds an even more enlightening place of solitude – the sacred temple of his soul – on “Incient Stepping.”

“Incient is a song that I sing with my eyes closed and feel it very deeply.  Musically It’s deep rooted reggae , which I feel is a really great contrast to my last single. There is a certain spirit it carries in the lyrics and delivery. I feel it is brought about by the ethereal soundscape of the music, which is almost hypnotic to m e,” states Protoje.

Modi Moscow message: Deepen ties, no solution on battlefield

In the inaugural bilateral visit of his third term and his first to Russia since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Moscow Monday with a clear message that New Delhi sought to “play a supportive role for a peaceful and stable region” and both sides were committed to deepening their “special and privileged strategic partnership” in “futuristic areas” of co-operation.

Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met Monday night at the latter’s dacha in the Moscow suburbs of Novo-Ogaryovo and will hold talks at the 22nd India-Russia annual summit Tuesday. Sources said that the Indian side will convey to the Russians that “a solution cannot be found on the battlefield” — a formulation that goes beyond what Modi had told him at their last in-person bilateral.

In Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in September 2022, Modi had told Putin that “this is not the era of war” — a line that was later used in the G20’s Bali declaration that November, and by Western leaders and interlocutors to press Russia to end the war.

As a preface to the meeting, both had warm exchanges. Putin told Modi, interpreters by their side, “Param dost (Dear friend)… You have a lot of ideas. You are very energetic, and you know how to get results for the benefit of India and the Indian people.”

“And the results are evidence, India is a confident, third largest economy in the world, and the biggest country in the world, in terms of population. 23 million babies are born in India every year, this means people are planning families and they have a planning horizon which is quite extensive. And expanding means that people are feeling confident and they are sure of stability. So I congratulate you and…I am very happy to see you again,” the Russian President said.

Modi responded, “This is such a happy moment that you invited me to your home…I am very grateful for this. India is the mother of democracy, almost 650 million voted in this elections…It is the first time in India, over the last 60 years, when the government is re-elected for the third time. The first time it happened was with Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. And now, 60 years later, I have got this chance that people of India gave me this opportunity to serve India.”

First bilateral in NDA 3

Choosing Russia for his first bilateral visit, Modi has broken with the tradition of India’s new PM travelling first to a neighbouring country. Delhi’s engagement will be guided by the imperative of Moscow-Beijing warmth not affecting Delhi-Moscow ties.

“I have been working for 10 years in the government, and my principle is reform, perform and transform. The people voted for these very principles, and I’m confident, I believe that in my third term, I’m going to work three times as much,” Modi said.

Modi’s visit assumes significance as it comes after the G7 summit last month in Italy, where he met US President Joe Biden , French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Ukraine ’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy . US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan then visited New Delhi to meet with his counterpart Ajit Doval and the PM.

Now, with Russia having an upper hand in the war and a possibility of Donald Trump returning as the US President later this year, Modi’s visit is being seen as Delhi positioning itself for what could follow six months from now.

The Ukraine war has put India in a delicate diplomatic position with its Western allies. New Delhi has walked the tightrope, not explicitly condemning the Russian invasion but calling for an international probe into the Bucha massacre in the early weeks of the war, and expressing concern over threats of nuclear war issued by Russian leaders.

India abstained from voting against Russia in several resolutions at the United Nations Security Council.

Delhi has consistently maintained it is on the side of “peace, respect for international law and support for the UN Charter”, and “strongly advocates a return to dialogue and diplomacy”. India has reiterated that respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is an essential element of the international order, a euphemism for questioning Russia’s conduct.

Significantly, Modi’s visit to Russia comes as leaders of the 32 nations in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ( NATO ) gather in Washington DC from July 9-11 to celebrate 75 years of the anti-Russia military alliance.

The Prime Minister was received by First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Denis Manturov who accompanied him to the hotel from the airport in the same car.

Sources pointed out that Manturov is senior to the Deputy Prime Minister who received the Chinese President during his visit to Russia, and New Delhi was reading this as a special gesture. Incidentally, Putin’s first foreign visit after being re-elected in March this year, in what is seen by the West as a sham election, was to China and he met Chinese President Xi Jinping for the second time last week in Astana — their second meeting in four months.

On Tuesday, Modi will also lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier in the Kremlin and will visit the Rosatom Pavilion at the exhibition venue in Moscow.

These engagements will be followed by a restricted level talks between the two leaders on Tuesday, which will then be followed by delegation-level talks led by the Prime Minister and the Russian President.

Sources said that the focus of the visit is the economic agenda — energy, trade, manufacturing, fertilizers. While defence and energy are the important drivers of the relationship — taking the bilateral trade volume to an all-time high of about $65 billion — an irritant in ties has been the presence of Indians on the frontlines of the war.

Before the visit, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra had said that the issue of “early discharge of Indian nationals who have been misled into the service of the Russian army” is also expected to figure in the discussions. Four Indians have been killed and 10 have returned, but another 40 are believed to be still in Russia.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, India has been buying large amounts of Russian oil at a discount to cushion the inflationary impact of rising crude prices. In the face of international criticism, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has repeatedly said that India would continue to buy Russian oil in the interest of Indian consumers.

Before the war, the bilateral trade target was set at $30 billion by 2025. However, bilateral trade reached an all-time high of $65.70 billion in FY 2023-24.

In the area of nuclear energy, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant units 1 and 2 have already become operational and work is progressing on two more units. The two sides will also take stock of civilian nuclear cooperation.

Modi last went to Russia for the Eastern Economic Forum meeting in Vladivostok in September 2019; Putin last visited India in December 2021 for the annual bilateral summit.

MOSCOW — India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Moscow on Monday for a two-day visit , his first since Russia sent troops into Ukraine, complicating the relationship between the longtime partners and pushing Russia closer to India’s rival, China.

Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin at his residence outside Moscow, to be followed by talks at the Kremlin on Tuesday. Modi last traveled to Russia in 2019, when he attended a forum in the far eastern port of Vladivostok and met with Putin. The leaders also saw each other in September 2022 in Uzbekistan, at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization bloc.

Modi posted photos of his arrival in Moscow on the social media platform X, in both Russian and English, saying he was “looking forward to further deepening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between our nations.”

“Stronger ties between our nations will greatly benefit our people,” he wrote, also sharing a picture of himself and Putin hugging.

Later, the two leaders were pictured in videos shared by the Kremlin at Putin’s residence, Novo-Ogaryovo, near Moscow.

Putin drove Modi around the grounds in a buggy and showed him his stable with horses. According to state news agencies, the two had earlier watched a horse show with performers in national Russian dress.

Modi thanked Putin on X for hosting him at Novo-Ogaryovo and said he was looking forward to Tuesday’s talks which he hoped will “go a long way in further cementing the bonds of friendship between India and Russia.”

Russia has had strong ties with India since the Cold War , and New Delhi’s importance as a key trading partner has grown since the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022. China and India have become key buyers of Russian oil following sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies that shut most Western markets off to Russian exports. India now gets more than 40% of its oil imports from Russia, according to analysts.

Under Modi’s leadership, India has avoided condemning Russia’s military action in Ukraine while emphasizing the need for a peaceful settlement.

The partnership between Moscow and New Delhi has become fraught, however, as Russia has moved closer to China. Modi notably stayed away from last week’s summit in Kazakhstan of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a security grouping founded by Moscow and Beijing.

Chietigj Bajpaee, senior South Asia research fellow at the U.K.-based Chatham House, said India is increasingly estranged from forums in which Russia and China play a prominent role.

“This is evident in India’s relatively low-key presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization last year, and now the decision by Modi not to attend this year’s summit,” Bajpaee said.

A confrontation in June 2020 along the disputed China-India border dramatically altered their already touchy relationship as rival troops fought with rocks, clubs and fists. At least 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers were killed. Tensions have persisted despite talks — and have seeped into how New Delhi looks at Moscow.

“Russia’s relations with China have been a matter of some concern for India in the context of Chinese increased assertiveness in the region,” D. Bala Venkatesh Verma, a former Indian ambassador to Russia, told The Associated Press.

But Modi is expected to seek to continue close relations with Russia, which is also a major defense supplier for India.

With Moscow’s arms industries mostly serving the Russian military in Ukraine, India has been diversifying its defense procurements, buying more from the U.S., Israel, France and Italy.

“Defense cooperation will clearly be a priority area,” Bajpaee said, adding that 60% of India’s military equipment and systems is “still of Russian origin.”

“We’ve seen some delay in the deliveries of spare parts ... following the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” he said. “I believe both countries are due to conclude a military logistics agreement, which would pave the way for more defense exchanges.”

Following an arrest warrant issued in 2023 by the International Criminal Court for his actions in Ukraine, Putin’s foreign travel has been sparse in recent years, so Modi’s trip could help the Russian leader boost his clout.

“We kind of see Putin going on a nostalgia trip — you know, he was in Vietnam, he was in North Korea,” said Theresa Fallon, an analyst at the Center for Russia, Europe, Asia Studies. “In my view, he’s trying to demonstrate that he’s not a vassal to China, that he has options, that Russia is still a great power.”

Alexander Gabuev, head of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, said that Putin’s interactions on the world stage show he “is far from isolated” and that Russia is not a country to be discounted.

Trade development also will figure strongly in the talks, particularly intentions to develop a maritime corridor between India’s major port of Chennai and Vladivostok, the gateway to Russia’s Far East.

India-Russia trade has seen a sharp increase, touching close to $65 billion in the 2023-24 financial year, due to strong energy cooperation, Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra told reporters Friday.

Imports from Russia touched $60 billion and exports from India $4 billion in the 2023-24 financial year, Kwatra said. India’s financial year runs from April to March.

He said India was trying to correct the trade imbalance with Russia by increasing its exports. India’s top exports to Russia include drugs and pharmaceutical products, telecom instruments, iron and steel, marine products and machinery.

Its top imports from Russia include crude oil and petroleum products, coal and coke, pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, fertilizer, vegetable oil, gold and silver.
