Northern Europe Cruises

Cruise to Northern Europe for a special cruise vacation that offers you everything from majestic fjords to glacial lakes.

Not only will you be thrilled by the gorgeous natural landscapes, but you will visit the eccentric and exciting cultures of some truly incredible countries. Indulge in fine Finnish fare like reindeer sausage and smoked herring. Heal your body and mind in the Blue Lagoon of Iceland. Immerse yourself in the history of the Vikings.

Find your inspiration, and enjoy some relaxation when you choose a cruise to the Baltics.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Northern Europe

Scandinavia is filled with countries that constantly rank as having the happiest citizens, so why not visit their hotspots and see if you wind up smiling more? The countries of Northern Europe are known for having long summer days where the sun seems to never set, but then in the winter it sometimes feels as if the sun will never rise. These extremes create an interesting culture and historical experience. Featured below are a few of the best ways to spend your time cruising through Northern Europe:

Hermitage in St. Petersburg

  • Catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis. On clear evenings, especially in September and March, this dazzling natural phenomenon will take your breath away.
  • See major works of art in the truly royal setting of a gilded palace at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The Hermitage is located in the Winter Palace of Russia’s monarchs and includes Catherine the Great’s expansive art collection.

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen

  • Be a kid again by attending Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. This site is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and was the inspiration for Disneyland. Also in Denmark is Legoland, an amusement park devoted to the popular toy bricks.
  • Go skiing. Norway is littered with ski resorts and slopes that served as training grounds for many Olympians. Norway has the most Winter Olympic medals for a reason, and they intend to keep it that way.

Grimm Brothers Statue

  • Warm up at a thermal pool in Iceland. Spas have popped up throughout Iceland, allowing people to bath in the naturally warm water of the geothermal springs. This is a popular way to spend a day in Iceland.
  • Celebrate fairytales in Denmark, home to Hans Christian Andersen, author of The Little Mermaid , The Ugly Duckling and more. In nearby Germany you can travel the fairytale route from Hanau to Bremen, lined with attractions dedicated to the Brothers Grimm.

northern europe cruises

Come aboard one of our MSC Northern Europe cruises and uncover the treasures that can be found in the British Isles, Scandinavian coasts or Baltic seas and experience Europe like you have always imagined it. Start your Polar, Scandinavian or Baltic cruises from the United Kingdom and visit enchanting coastal towns and cities in countries like Norway, Denmark, Sweden or Iceland. From bustling cities like Copenhagen, Tallin or Hamburg , to the beautiful fjords or the picturesque coasts, Northern European cruises have it all. Northern Europe is distinctly different from any other part of the continent. This is because its ancient settlements combine the essence of their culture with the modern features of today. Scandinavian cruises will show you beautiful locations such as Stockholm , Bergen or Oslo . You will be able to visit gorgeous buildings such as the Akershus Fortress or take a stroll around Frogner Park, and we cannot forget the avant-garde building of the Oslo Opera House, located on the harbor.

A Nordic cruise can take you to the bustling city of Copenhagen, with the famous Little Mermaid statue, or to Stockholm, home of the Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are a nature-lover, then this is the cruise for you: MSC Baltic cruises will show you the best of the northern coasts, including the stunning Norwegian fjords, the rugged North Atlantic islands such as Svalbard, or experience a unique and breathtaking Northern Lights cruise. Discover also our Artic cruises and get a rare opportunity to visit Iceland  and Greenland . Whether you are planning a trip with friends or family or going on a couple’s getaway, treat yourself to a Baltic cruise in 2024 or a Scandinavian cruise in 2024 and see Europe from a new perspective.

Northern Europe Countries

Have you dreamed of seeing the Norwegian fjords in real life? Are you intrigued by the volcanic wonders of Iceland? Choose a Scandinavian cruise and travel to Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Iceland and discover how these countries mix modern lifestyles with centuries of history and culture. You will be able to not only learn about it but experience it up close during trips and excursions, either to capital cities like Oslo, Stockholm or Reykjavik, but also to smaller towns such as Trondheim in Norway, or Akureyri in Iceland. No matter where you’d like to go in Northern Europe, we can take you there. Or choose an MSC Northern Europe cruise and experience all the North Atlantic has to offer: from France (La Rochelle) and the United Kingdom (Southampton or Edinburgh) all the way to Greenland (Oaqortoq, Nuuk or Ilulissat), passing through the Baltic Sea to Estonia (Tallin) or Finland (Helsinki, Hamina/Kotka), among many others.

How well do you know the United Kingdom? If you need a plan for your 2024 vacation, there are many hidden treasures within Great Britain and Ireland, the only thing you need to do is jump on an MSC cruise around the UK and discover these local attractions. The ports for the British Isles cruises act as gateways to other cities and you can even book a Norway fjords cruise or other Norway cruises in 2024. For starters, you could begin your cruise from Southampton, a port city that has always been a bright spot for cultural exchange. Why not take a stroll down its medieval town walls? During a stop at South Queensferry in Edinburgh, marvel at the beauty of this city. Visit the castle for a look at the Scottish crown jewels or amble down the Royal Mile for a bit of shopping or a cup of tea. If you are lucky, you might get to experience –or hear—the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Art Festival or the International Book Festival. If you wish for a bit of luck on the Emerald Isle, you can stop off at the ports in Cork or Ringaskiddy in the Republic of Ireland. Discover so much more with a cruise around the British Isles in the summer!

Norway Cruises

Did you know that the Vikings main mode of transportation was a ship? They used them to go from one fjord to another. You can do the same with an MSC Norwegian fjords cruise that will show you some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Discover two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Geirangerfjord (Hellesylt) and the Nærøyfjord (Flaam), a stunning landscape that you will only be able to see in Norway, so hop on an MSC fjord cruise and enjoy these natural wonders, whether you are taking a trip with friends, a family vacation or going on a couple’s getaway. You will be able to visit fjords such as Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord and soak up the natural beauty of these formations. Another prime example of incredible natural formations you can enjoy in Norway is the enormous Briksdal Glacier, near Olden’s port. There you can visit the picturesque houses or go for a hike around the Jostedalsbreen National Park. You can visit even more locations during an MSC Norway cruise such as: Maloy, Stavanger or Alesund in the South; and Tromso, Alta in the far North. Find the perfect Norwegian cruise for your next vacation with MSC cruises!

Baltic Cruises

Are you intrigued by the wonders of the Baltic Sea? Discover them with an MSC Baltic cruise this 2024 and spend your summer exploring Sweden, Finland, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and much more. Tallin is the capital city of Estonia. There you can stroll down its cobbled streets, explore its medieval walls, Gothic churches, squares and more. You can also book an MSC cruise excursion to visit the Toompea Castle and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, two of the city’s most impressive buildings. Other capital cities included in an MSC Baltic cruise are Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen or Helsinki, an up-and-coming destination where you can explore Suomenlinna, an 18th century fortress that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If UNESCO World Heritage Sites do intrigue you, or you simply appreciate history and culture, choose a Baltic cruise and enjoy the beauty of Visby, on the island of Gotland. You will be charmed by Visby’s botanical gardens and its beautiful medieval town center. Don’t forget to visit the 12th century St. Mary’s Cathedral. There is much more to see and more hidden gems to discover in Northern Europe! What are you waiting for?

Northern Europe ports

MSC offers a wide range of docking points for your Northern European cruise. Some are embarkation points and others are ports of call, so you can pick the one that will best suit you to start from, and then which ones you will want to visit during your vacation. Start your trip in the south of the UK, with cruises from Southampton and enjoy your MSC Baltic, Fjords or European Atlantic cruises. We also stop at ports in Ireland, such as Cork, or in the Netherlands, for example in Rotterdam, from where we also organize shorter cruises. If you’d prefer to begin your adventure elsewhere, there are ports located across Northern Europe, so you could get your trip started in France, choosing a cruise from Le Havre port, which is near cities such as Paris, Cherbourg or in the Netherlands, opting for a cruise from near Amsterdam. You could also hop aboard your cruise in German ports such as Hamburg or Kiel (near Lübeck) or Warnemünde. There are many other different options spread across the Atlantic such as Rotterdam or Copenhagen. Choose MSC Cruises, and book and unforgettable experience exploring the north of Europe.

CRUISES FROM SOUTHAMPTON Are you ready for a new adventure from the UK? Southampton’s bustling port is the perfect place from where you can discover the beauty of the North Atlantic. Hop onto an MSC cruise ship and explore Northern Europe gems in France, the Netherlands, Norway or Denmark. Find the right itinerary for your trip and explore cities like Bruges, Helsinki or Stockholm, among others. Come aboard a Northern European cruise at Southampton and enjoy yourself. Once aboard, you’ll be able to visit many European cities. When stopping in Copenhagen, you may book an excursion from those available. You can do the same at ports in Germany, the Netherlands or France.

COPENHAGEN CRUISE Begin your MSC Northern Europe cruise in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. This lively city is known for its colorful houses, art and cuisine. Did you know Copenhagen has Michelin-star restaurants? You can discover them during your visit while the cruise ship is docked there. Take a stroll and enjoy the sights of the Øresund strait, or book MSC excursions to see the impressive Christiansborg Palace. Enjoy a scenic river cruise from MSC or enjoy the exciting Tivoli Gardens, the perfect place to spend an afternoon with family or friends. Hop aboard an MSC Baltic cruise at Copenhagen and discover other port cities in Estonia, Sweden and Finland.

REYKJAVIK CRUISE Reykjavik is known as the city of spas. With an Iceland cruise, you can marvel at its craters, volcanos, and caves. The piers along the shore host a variety of shops, live music clubs and bars and cafés. Take a stroll up to Lækjartorg to admire the Sófar, also known as the Sun Voyager, a huge modern steel sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason. It represents an old Viking vessel, with the bow of the ship pointing north. As you will see during your MSC cruise of Northern Europe, Iceland is full of geothermal energy, hot springs, spas and gorgeous skies. Summer is the best season to enjoy a spectacular sunset and admire Reykjavik in the waters of its bay.

Where do you go on a Scandinavian cruise?

MSC Northern Europe cruises branch off into different areas. You can start further north on the Scandinavian Peninsula and choose a cruise to visit Iceland, Greenland or Norway, where you will be able to see the majestic fjords. And then there is the Baltic Sea, located between mainland Europe and Scandinavian and Jutland Peninsulas. On the west, the countries you can visit there are Sweden and Denmark, and on the east, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Explore the Scandinavian Peninsula, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea with MSC and discover its hidden gems on your next vacation. What are you waiting for?

Can you cruise to Iceland?

Our Northern Europe cruises have stops at Icelandic ports such as Reykjavik and Akureyri, where you can dock and experience the beauty of this unique country. When you set sail for your Iceland stopover and first dock in Reykjavik, don’t miss an excursion to Þingvellir National Park where you can see Iceland’s largest lake or head southeast on the island and to find Strokkur, the only regularly erupting geyser. In Akureyri, you can choose excursions such as Godafoss, a waterfall approximately 40 feet tall, the pseudo-craters of Skutustaðir, and Dimmurborgir, an incredible labyrinth of lava. From waterfalls to craters and geysers, it has something for everyone. Explore beyond Scandinavia with an Iceland stopover on an MSC cruise!

How much does a Baltic cruise cost?

There’s a Baltic cruise waiting for you, independently of your budget. MSC cruises offer a wide range and selection of experiences, which will determine the overall price. Factors to consider are different cabin types and accommodation preferences, the excursions you book, as well as the numerous on-board services and experiences we offer. The earlier you book your cruise, the better the price you will find. Although, you can also take advantage of our special promotions available at different times throughout the year. You can also come across a bargain through our flash sales and last-minute deals. What are you waiting for?

Can you see the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise?

The Arctic viewing season for the Northern Lights on a Baltic cruise is from late September to late March or early April. However, the best months to view the Northern Lights are December through March, when skies are darkest due to the darker winter days and the higher probability of clear skies. Keep in mind that while it is possible to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis in places like southern Finland, you will have a much better chance if you choose a cruise that travels farther north into Scandinavia.

What is the best time to go on a Baltic cruise?

The Baltic Sea is characterized by seasonality. That is to say there is a large difference in the weather depending on the month. Winters are long, cold and dark, while summers are short and relatively warm. Although, you can still experience some weather changes and spots of showers on a Baltic cruise in the summer. Because the Baltic Sea is located between the cooler winds of the North Atlantic and the harsher continental European climate, conditions and temperatures can vary greatly throughout the year. This means summers can be warm and relatively dry, with some chances of precipitation. MSC cruises go to the Baltics when the weather is best, although you should take into consideration how variable the conditions can be when packing your suitcases. Discover a unique part of Europe with MSC and find your Baltic cruise for the summer!

What do you wear on a Baltic cruise?

The best time to go on a Baltic cruise is in the late spring or summer, seasons when the temperatures range between 53ºF and 72ºF. With such a temperature range as that, you will be able to wear anything from shorts and a T-shirt to jeans with a hoodie or windbreaker. We recommend you choose a varied wardrobe and add plenty of layers to your outfits for your cruise, just in case. Also, even though the precipitation rates are lower in May, June and July, we would still advise you to pack a rain jacket along with you, because you might encounter light showers during your cruise. Another detail you might want to consider that the Baltic States experience long daylight hours, especially during the months of May, June, July and August. So, remember to pack your sleep mask if you think you’ll need it. Go on an incredible adventure with an MSC Baltic cruise.

Top Northern Europe FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Northern Europe?

Northern Europe is enchanting at any time of year, but May to September is the best period. You’ll enjoy long, bright days and almost 24 hours of daylight in June. Summer for the locals is a time of festivals, exploring the countryside, and enjoying al-fresco dining.

How long are typical itineraries?

Our Northern Europe itineraries vary from seven to 14 nights, with a vast range of choices, whether you’re looking for a week in the Norwegian fjords or a longer itinerary that explores the capitals of the Baltic. You can even sail from Southampton, England deep into the Arctic Circle, to Norway’s Nordkapp.

Are there any specific visa requirements for cruising to countries in Northern Europe?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

What kind of weather can be expected during a Northern Europe cruise?

You can expect all kinds of summer weather, from bright sunshine to occasional mist, rain, and drizzle. Evenings can be cool. Come prepared for all eventualities, with light layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy shoes.

What types of excursions are available?

We offer excursions for a range of interests, from guided hikes to scenic boat rides, in-depth visits to castles and museums, and immersive explorations of local food and drink. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, an individual, a family, or a group of friends, you’ll find a fantastic range of cultural and experiential activities in every port.

Are there any cultural or language tips I should know before cruising to Northern Europe?

On your travels in Northern Europe, you will experience a number of different cultures, currencies, cuisines, and languages. It’s important, and fun, to acknowledge these differences and learn a little about the historical events that have shaped each destination. English is widely spoken in Scandinavian countries, especially in the service industry, although it’s always appreciated if you learn a few words of the local language.

Prepare to encounter a number of different currencies on your travels; Finland, Estonia, and the Republic of Ireland use the Euro, but other countries have their own currencies. U.S. dollars are not necessarily accepted, although credit cards are widely used, and there are plenty of ATMs.

Or visit Honningsvag for a glimpse of the Midnight Sun during your evening departure. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see these natural phenomena, we can promise that the journey is just as exciting as the wonders themselves.

Norway & Iceland excursions

Our award-winning Norway and Iceland cruise shore excursions bring you to natural wonders, wildlife and landmarks. Relax in Reykjavik’s Blue Lagoon while gazing at snowy landscapes. Get up close to Akureyri’s 35-foot waterfall that tumbles into the Skjálfandafljót River below. Or travel to the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Farm in Grundarfjordur to learn how to make hákarl, a 400-year old Icelandic delicacy.

More ashore

Enjoy even more marvels and mysteries with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. On a Norway cruise to Alta, search for the Aurora Borealis at midnight with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. Attend a summer concert at Tromsø’s Arctic Cathedral to welcome the return of the Midnight Sun. NORTHERN EUROPE CRUISES

The charm of the great north.

Climb aboard one of our MSC Northern Europe cruises and discover the wonders that can be found in the British Isles , Scandinavian coastlines or the Baltic states  and experience Europe like never before. Start your Polar, Scandinavian or Baltic cruise from the British Isles and visit the coastal towns and cities in countries like Norway , Denmark , Sweden  or Iceland . From the bustle of cities like Copenhagen , Tallinn  or Hamburg , to the quiet beauty of the fjords or the scenic coastal hamlets, a Northern Europe cruise has it all. The cities in Northern Europe are distinctly different from any other settlements, this is because they perfectly combine the essence of their culture with the modern features of our current times. Scandinavian cruises will take you to locations such as Stockholm , Bergen  or Oslo . Here in particular you will be able to visit awe-inspiring buildings such as the Akershus Fortress , or relax with a stroll around Frogner Park , not to mention the avant-garde building of the Oslo Opera House, located at the harbour. A Nordic cruise could also take you to Copenhagen, with its famous statue of the Little Mermaid, or Stockholm, home to the Drottningholm palace, a UNESCO-listed building. If you are also a nature enthusiast, then this is the cruise for you: MSC Baltic cruises will show you the best of the northern coastlines, including the Norwegian fjords  or rugged north Atlantic islands such as Svalbard, or explore further and take an Arctic cruise to visit Iceland and Greenland . Whether as a trip with friends, a family holiday or a couple's getaway, treat yourself to a Baltic or Fjords cruise this 2024, or in 2025 and discover Europe from a new perspective.

Northern Europe Countries

How well do you know the British Isles? If you need a plan for your 2023 holidays, there are many treasures hidden within Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Portland, the Orkney Islands or the Shetlands, you only need to jump on an MSC cruise around the UK and enjoy the local attractions. The ports for the British Isles cruises serve as gateways to other cities, although there is much to see in them as well. For instance, you could start your cruise from the UK’s very own Southampton, typically the stop to visit London, although with a rich history of its own. Inhabited since the Stone Age, from the Romans to the Normans and to current times, this port city has always been a spot for cultural exchange; why not take a stroll down its medieval town walls? Enjoy the beauty of Edinburgh during a stop at South Queensferry. Visit the castle for a look at the Scottish crown jewels or amble round the city centre for a bit of shopping or a cup of tea. If you are lucky, you might see –or hear– the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Art Festival or the International Book Festival. If you wish for a bit of luck in the emerald isle, you can stop at the ports in Cork and Ringaskiddy in the Republic of Ireland , or in Belfast, in Northern Ireland , where you can visit the hexagonal basalt column formations known as the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO world heritage site. You can also go for a hike around the beautiful Glenariff Forest Park, and its breathtaking waterfalls. FIND YOUR CRUISE

Norway Cruises

Did you know the Vikings used to get around in ships to travel from one fjord to another? You can do the same with an MSC Norwegian fjords cruise that will take you to some of the most beautiful locations in the planet. Discover two UNESCO World Heritage Site s: the Geirangerfjord (Hellesylt) and the Nærøyfjord (Flaam), a breathtaking landscape you will only be able to see in Norway, so hop onto an MSC fjord cruise and enjoy these wonders of nature, whether as a trip with friends, a family holiday or a couple’s getaway. You will be able to visit fjords such as the Geirangerfjord and the Naerøyfjord and witness the natural beauty of these formations. Another example of incredible natural formation you can enjoy in Norway is the impressive Briksdal Glacier, near the port city of Olden. There you can visit the picturesque houses, or go for a hike to the Jostedalsbreen National Park. More locations you can visit during an MSC Norway cruise are, among others, Maloy, Stavanger or Adalsnes in the southern area; and Tromso, Alta or Hammerfest at the very north. Find the perfect Norwegian cruise for your holiday with MSC cruises this summer! FIND YOUR CRUISE

Baltic Cruises

Other capital cities included in an MSC Baltic cruise are Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen or Helsinki, an emerging destination where you will discover the Suomenlinna, an 18th century fortress that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are indeed interested in UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or you just enjoy history and culture, choose a Baltic cruise and enjoy the beauty of Visby, on the island of Gotland. Visby’s botanical gardens and its beautiful medieval town centre will charm you; don’t forget to visit the 12th century St. Mary’s Cathedral. There is much more to see, with more ports in Goteborg, Ronne, Warnermünde or Gdynia, hidden gems in Northern Europe that are waiting for you, don’t miss out!

Northern Europe ports

Historically, the British Isles have always relied heavily on their port cities, and Southampton is a perfect example: it was a centre of activity in the Stone Age , then continued to be an important port for the Romans , the Anglo-Saxons or the Normans , all the way to the present. Choose a cruise from Southampton this 2024 and for 2025 and explore the north of Europe in style with MSC. From Southampton, you will be able to access London during your cruise, and we needn’t tell you the wonders of the capital city of the United Kingdom. From Southampton you will also be able to book excursions to Windsor Castle ; the elegant city of Bath, among the most beautiful places in England to visit, was transformed by the Romans in the first spa resort in England; or Stonehenge, the mysterious Neolithic stone circle that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Discover the treasures of the Atlantic , starting with the British Isles .

COPENHAGEN CRUISE Begin your MSC Northern Europe cruise in Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen . Discover this bustling city known for its picturesque houses, its love for art and culture, and its cuisine. Did you know Copenhagen has Michelin-star restaurants? You can discover it all during your wanderings around the city while the cruise ship is docked there. Take a stroll around the city on your own and enjoy the sight of the Øresund strait , or book MSC excursions to see the Christiansborg Palace , an impressive building at the heart of the city. You can also admire the city from the water with a scenic cruise with MSC; or enjoy the excitement of the Tivoli Gardens, with an amusement park, the perfect place for a family excursion, a day with friends, or your couple. Climb aboard an MSC Baltic cruise at Copenhagen and discover other port cities like Tallin , Stockholm , Helsinki and much more. Treat yourself to an unforgettable holiday. FIND YOUR CRUISE

HAMBURG CRUISE If there is a famous port in Northern Europe, that is Hamburg . This port city, located on the banks of the Elbe river, is a bridge between continental Europe and the Scandinavian countries. Begin your MSC cruise in Hamburg and take the opportunity to explore this exciting and bustling German city. Did you know the world’s largest warehouse district is in Hamburg? It’s called the Speicherstadt , and you can visit it through a MSC excursion. Not only can you enjoy its Neo-Gothic style , but you can also learn more about it in its museums . The intricate setting of alleys and canals has earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site ; definitely worth a look. You can also visit the botanical park, St. Michael’s church or the City Hall. There is more to do in Hamburg before you embark on your Norwegian Fjords cruise: another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lübeck . This picturesque town, on the Trave river, is known for its Gothic architecture, medieval streets and alleys, the Holstenstor or the largest mechanical organ at St. Mary’s Church. OLD-WORLD WARMTH ALONG BREEZY COAST

You can feel warmth in your heart no matter the temperature outside, and the northwestern reaches of Europe illustrate this beautifully. Join the best European cruises through the British Isles and along the coast of the Netherlands, where enchanted country charm and royal, old-world cities offer endless possibilities for memories that will last a lifetime.

Amsterdam, Netherlands Tulip Field

THE JOY OF GOING DUTCH

The Dutch have managed to keep the sea at bay for hundreds of years, but many of the best European cruises still make their way into Amsterdam . If you tire of the tranquility you find amid tulip fields and beneath towering windmills, make your way to the hipster capital of Rotterdam.

Ireland Rock of Cashel

ETERNAL LANDSCAPES ON THE EMERALd ISLE

Life is but a dream in Ireland , whether you down a pint of Guinness and trace tales told by James Joyce in Dublin, or careen along the Cliffs of Moher along the west coast. Many cruises to Europe also stop in Northern Ireland's Belfast, a city that's a testament to rebirth and reconciliation.

Cityscape in Glasgow, Scotland

STEP INTO A SCOTTISH FAIRYTALE

When you visit Scotland, it can be difficult to discern legend from real life. Strolling down Edinburgh's Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle might feel like a dream, while the fabled and mythical Loch Ness may surprise you with its charm and stunning scenery. Scotland's one of the best places to visit in Europe, period.

Iceland is an unbelievable wonderland where scenes like this one of Kirkjufell mountain abound.

WINTER SKIES, SUMMER SUN

Copenhagen, Denmark Nyhavn Pier Sunset

SCANDINAVIA'S UNSUNG SISTER

Many of the best European cruises dock in Denmark, and it's no wonder why. From colorful Nyhavn harbor in Copenhagen to storied castles like Amalienborg and Frederiksborg, Denmark more than makes up for the fact that its more famous neighbors often eclipse it.

Iceland Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa

LAND OF FIRE AND ICE

It's easy to be intrigued by Iceland , whether you walk through Reykjavik's riveting Hallgrimskirkja church, or visit “the Wash Road”, the hippest shopping district in the city. There are few better ways to cap off cruises to Europe than a dip in the aptly-named Blue Lagoon.

Norway, Stavanger Majestic Cliff

PRICELESS PANORAMAS, FABULOUS FJORDs

Norway is a country in beautiful balance. Had enough of the orderliness of Oslo? Head west to beautiful Bergen, where finger-shaped fjords jut into and out of thousands of miles of coastline. Or contrast a fresh fish dinner at sea level with the view from towering Trolltunga cliff.

Europe is beautiful in every season, but the peak of comfortable weather (especially in the north) is between May and September.

You should always be prepared for rain and colder weather when you travel to Europe, especially in the North. Dress in light layers for your vacation.

Europeans speak more English the farther north you go. Your phone's translation app (or, at minimum, learning how to say "Hello" and "Thank You" in local languages) will aid you along the Mediterranean.

RELATED PORTS

Learn more about Baltic ports like Klaipeda, Lithuania and Tallinn, Estonia, or read up on Bergen, the gateway to Norway's stunning fjords. The Mediterranean provides many options but start by exploring Malaga on Spain's Costa del Sol or the exciting Monte Carlo, Monaco. The most popular ports in the British Isles are Edinburgh in Scotland and the cities of Belfast and Dublin in Ireland. No matter what you like, you will find your favourite European cruise.

Reviews ON OUR Northern Europe CRUISES

background1

" We love MSC...first experience earlier this year visiting Norway, then again for Estonia, Russia and Finland... "

Lance Cameron F., Cruising the Northern Europe

NORTHERN EUROPE CRUISES AND CRUISES FROM UK

Where does a baltic cruise go, what do you wear on a northern european cruise, what is the best time of year to cruise northern europe, what is the weather in the baltic sea, what countries are part of a northern europe cruise, how long is a northern europe cruise.

A Northern Europe cruise can be as long or as short as you want. We have options from 1, 2 or 3 nights to 7, 9, 11 nights or more . For some cruises, such as the Norwegian fjord or Baltic Sea cruises , you will need to choose dates that are available within the months when we go to those areas. If, however, you were thinking more along the lines of a cruise that stopped in France, the Netherlands or the UK, you will have more room to choose, since we have cruises that go there even in some winter months. Once your dates are set, you can join us for however long you would like, at MSC Cruises we are flexible. You can climb aboard at any moment, either for a long summer holiday with your family, for a short while with friends, or for a romantic getaway with your partner. Tailor your trip with MSC Cruises and enjoy the best the Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic or the Norwegian fjords, visiting countries such as Sweden, Finland, Iceland or Greenland, and discover all they have to offer this summer, you won’t be disappointed!

2023 Northern Europe upcoming itinerary changes

This morning we received an email indicating our option to book a Norwegian Fjords voyage on the Dawn for May 17-31, 2023 has been cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in Russia.  The email went on to further indicate Silversea would be "amending its overall 2023 Northern Europe deployment".  While this comes as no surprise to anyone that St. Petersburg will continue to be eliminated, this particular cruise was Southampton - Copenhagen and did not call on any ports east of Copenhagen.  They offered us a May 31-June 14 sailing from Southampton to Copenhagen, which currently does not exist.  The Northern Europe sailings on the Dawn will change, both with the itineraries and sail dates for 2023, but to what extent is currently unknown.  They have not amended the voyages on the website as of yet.

I wonder why SS is changing 2023 Norwegian cruises but not the 2022 cruises? Does SS know something about the Russia situation that we don't know about?

Just now, A Tucson Guy said: I wonder why SS is changing 2023 Norwegian cruises but not the 2022 cruises? Does SS know something about the Russia situation that we don't know about?

Tucson Guy, I was wondering the same thing.  For now, they are continuing to call on other ports in the Baltic, but if the situation escalates, Silversea may not have a choice but to amend those itineraries as well to keep their guests safe.  I don't think the Norwegian Fjords ports are at risk, but they are shifting things around to accommodate the continued elimination of St. Petersburg, which was the only port elimination specifically mentioned in the email.

I don't think it's concern about security in coastal Norway, but a larger adjustment of northern Europe cruises for next year. This year they scrambled to amend itineraries which had been scheduled to travel to Russia, but they likely looked at their planned 2023 season and decided it would make sense to make broader changes to itineraries. SS currently has Dawn, Moon, Wind and Cloud doing northern Europe itineraries in summer 2023; I wonder if they may have decided to reposition one of those ships elsewhere? St. Petersburg is a huge draw, and without it, they may be doing more than minor tweaks to the 2023 itineraries.

I think you're right.  And although they changed itineraries for this year, next year's voyages still showed St. Petersburg, which certainly limits potential bookings for 2023.  I had just looked at the northern Europe voyages for next year to see if they were planning similar itineraries to those scheduled on the Moon this year (trying to decide whether to book one this August or next year) and was surprised to see that they hadn't updated itineraries and pricing for next year yet.

Hmmm. Wonder if the cancellations are due to soft bookings, safety concerns, notification from the cruise lines' insurer - or all of the above?

According to the email we received, the itinerary changes should be rolled out in the coming days.  Of course, days could turn into weeks, but we'll monitor their website and keep in touch with our Silversea Cruise Consultant.

bethtex

if safety considerations, would expect this years cruises to be cancelled or changed as well

so makes sense that demand may be down so they are moving a ship and redoing the itineraries.

headed to Baltic and Norwegian Fjords in Aug 2022, and hoping no more changes to our itinerary.

Wow. We are booked for a 10 day Copenhagen-Copenhagen trip next July 2023, but have not received any information that our cruise has been affected. I really hope not.

The $500 OBC per guest incentive to change to May 31 - Jun 14 is enticing us to accept the change.

We aren't eligible for the credit because we didn't put a deposit on the voyage yet.  We simply had a hold on a suite.  I guess we received the email because holds actually have a booking number assigned to them. We were hoping to combine this voyage with the one prior to it coming up from Lisbon - Southampton, but now we aren't sure where the Dawn will be from May 17-31.  If you are flexible, $500 pp OBC is very attractive.

Just a few weeks ago, we were able to book a Silversea Baltic cruise at the end of August 2022 for an extremely low price (€2.250 pp, Classic Veranda, Port to Port). I'm pretty sure that the lack of St. Petersburg on the itinerary has dramatically affected sales and thus all the cruise lines are rethinking next summer's Northern Europe plans. We were extremely happy to finally find a cruise that stops in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ports often ignored on Baltic cruises, in favour of more time in Russia.

I was eying that voyage because the alternate ports they added were interesting.  It appears that many including yourself felt the same because that voyage is close to sold out now.

I suspect this is the reason and whilst conflict related, ultimately is sales driven.

I saw those offers too and gutted I was unable to take advantage as I'd made a June booking already (currently in Stockholm), but definitely would have taken one of those.

I wonder if my Osaka to Seward will be amended (other than just a avoiding Kamchatsky.) That's a rather large area of Russian waters it's sailing in!

What concerns me about Silversea's email to us of their intention to cancel the May 17-31 Southampton - Copenhagen voyage is they didn't offer an alternative voyage during the same time period.  The offer was for a similar sailing out of Southampton starting May 31, which currently does not exist on their website.  I completely understand their reason to modify the 2023 Northern Europe schedule to remove St. Petersburg, but they've done that already in 2022 by adding additional ports to those particular voyages in which St. Pete was eliminated.  Once the Dawn arrives into Southampton May 17, will it just sit there for 14 days?  We asked our Silversea Rep this question and he didn't have an answer.  Until we see specific changes to their voyages on the website, we won't know whether this particular voyage cancellation is truly a schedule adjustment due to the conflict or if the Dawn will be used for a charter.

As les37b pointed out, there are other voyages in 2023 that sail thru Russian waters.  The Wind also calls on several ports in Russia during its expedition sail thru the Artic in September 2023.

  • 2 weeks later...

This morning, Silversea updated their website with changes to their 2023 Northern Europe voyages on the Dawn to remove St. Petersburg.  They kept other Baltic countries on some of the itineraries.  Our cancelled voyage on the Dawn from May 17-31 (Southampton-Copenhagen) was replaced with a circumnavigation of Great Britain (Southampton-Southampton) and calls on a couple of ports that are more typical of an expedition cruise.  As far as I could tell, the other ships that sail in Russian waters next year (Whisper, Muse, Spirit and Wind) haven't had their itineraries updated, but its just a matter of time.

Why norway is now a year-round cruise travel destination.

Cruising in the winter in Norway offers a very different experience from a typical summer cruise in ... [+] the Norwegian fjords.

Norway has never been more popular as a cruise destination. In 2023, more than six million passenger visits were recorded by Norwegian cruise ports, an all-time record .

Yet in the popular summer season, Norway’s busiest ports are full to the brim with cruise ships. So, where is that growth coming from?

The typical Norwegian fjords cruise used to be a summer-only experience, with ships relocated to the Mediterranean or other parts of the world for the rest of the year. But the popularity of Norway has seen cruise lines experiment with lengthening the fjords season from as early as April to as late as September.

This increase in the number of fjords itineraries comes at a time when winter cruising is also enjoying a boom in popularity, thanks to the extensive coverage of the solar maximum meaning it’s prime time to see the northern lights.

Fjords Season Longer Than Ever

The Norwegian fjords region is famous as a summer destination, with images of lush green mountainsides and bright blue skies used to draw in travelers from all over the world. Despite more uncertain weather, many cruise lines have extended their seasons in the fjords from the late spring through to fall.

It’s not just about offering the same itineraries earlier and later. James Moss, itinerary product manager at Fred Olsen Cruise Lines explains that cruising outside the beautiful spring and summer months offers chances to see different sides of Norway.

Google pixel deadline—10 days to update or stop using your phone, apple confirms iphone upgrade with 2 key new features is here in days.

Blossoming apples in Hardangerfjord are among the attractions in Fjord Norway outside the high ... [+] cruise season.

“In autumn, we take guests to Hardangerfjord for the harvest season. In Ulvik, we offer guests the opportunity to meet local farm owners and sample produce like pears and apples,” he says.

Boom In Northern Lights Travel

Interest in northern lights cruise itineraries has also grown significantly in recent years, due in large part to the prominent coverage of the expected solar maximum in the media.

The best northern lights itineraries aim to get north of the Arctic circle as early in the cruise as possible in order to maximize the number of port calls from where aurora chasing is possible. There are also good chances of sightings from the ships themselves, if you’re prepared to dress up warm and stay up late.

Although the chance to see the northern lights is the star attraction, cruising Northern Norway in the winter offers other benefits too.

Moss says guests can “witness the fjords from a different perspective with stunning snow-topped peaks” and experience thrilling winter activities “such as ice fishing, dog sledding and snow-shoeing.”

Popular With German Lines

Norway is also becoming a more popular destination for German-focused cruise lines. AIDA Cruises—part of the same Carnival group as Costa, Cunard, Holland America, P&O Cruises, and Princess—is a common sight at ports less popular with other cruise lines such as Trondheim.

Other European cruise lines such as MSC Cruises start many itineraries from Kiel or Hamburg.

New Hurtigruten Offering

Since Hurtigruten lost its monopoly on the Norwegian coastal route, the company has sought new uses for some of its vessels.

Hurtigruten MS Trollfjord now offers visitors the chance to sail to the North Cape during the ... [+] winter.

To celebrate 130 years of the coastal route, Hurtigruten introduced two new routes for MS Trollfjord that act more like cruises than local transport. The popularity of the new offer has resulted in Hurtigruten making the two routes permanent, with a few alterations.

In the summer, the ‘Svalbard Line’ will take guests from Bergen, up the Norwegian coast, and over to Svalbard, with port calls at remote settlements Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund.

In the winter, the ‘North Cape Line’ travels from Oslo, all around the south of Norway and up the coastline to Honningsvåg, for the North Cape, before returning to Bergen. Both routes offer ports never before served by the line.

Hurtigruten’s coastal ferry rival Havila Voyages also announced an extension to its Geirangerfjord season. For many years, the coastal ferry has taken a detour from Ålesund into one of Norway’s most scenic fjords for the summer season.

In 2025, the Havila ships—which are capable of sailing on battery power for up to four hours—will also carry tourists and locals into the Geirangerfjord during April and May .

Growth In Expedition Cruising

Cruise ships carrying more than 200 guests—the vast majority of mainstream cruise lines—face tough new environmental regulations that open up the Arctic travel market for specialist expedition cruise companies. The number of expedition ships visiting Longyearbyen had already increased from 39 in 2016 to 81 in 2022.

While sailings in and around Svalbard are restricted to the late spring and summer months when light is available, many expedition ships offer trips in Arctic Norway during the winter season for northern lights expeditions and whale-watching tours.
