Don Juan II: The Only Michelin-Starred Cruise on the Seine

There are Seine river cruises, and then there’s the Don Juan II. Moored at Passerelle Debilly opposite the Eiffel Tower, this historic Art Deco yacht is kitted out with fireplaces, framed paintings and a wood-paneled bar from where you can order a flute of Champagne before your dinner cruise. Designed by the Maison Pierre Frey, it’s all elegance- down to the gold-colored curtains framing the windows. What’s more, there are only 12 tables (maximum capacity of 38 guests) so it’s an intimate affair.

But let’s talk about the food, shall we? It’s a truth universally acknowledged that river cruises have mediocre, ho-hum cuisine (after all, the view is the star of the show). Yet on the Don Juan II, the food is so good, it’s a distraction- you end up paying more attention to your plate than the stunning scenery out the window.

That’s because Chef Frédéric Anton is at the helm. He’s the culinary maestro who holds three Michelin stars at Le Pré Catelan in the 16th, and one star at Le Jules Verne , the gastronomic hot spot atop the Eiffel Tower. In fact, he’s also been awarded a Michelin star for the Don Juan II- making it the only Seine river cruise to hold such an honor.

What’s on the dinner menu? It’s a glorious culinary parade with dishes staggered so they served in front of each major landmark: the Musée d’Orsay, the Monnaie de Paris, Notre-Dame, Hotel de Ville, the Conciergerie and the Louvre . Ingredients are seasonal, so the menu reflects what’s being grown at the moment. To wit: amuse-bouches of fried artichoke with anchovy cream, a flan-like marvel with fennel and caviar topped with elderflowers, a crab delicacy resembling an apple meringue, the signature langoustine ravioli topped with a golden jelly, and pan-fried lamb with morel mushrooms in a Jura wine sauce. To cap off your feast, the chocolate soufflé with pistachio ice cream is sublime.

A highly gastronomic novelty this autumn, Michelin-starred chef Frédéric Anton takes the helm of the yacht Don Juan II and takes Parisian gourmets on a gastronomic cruise along the Seine, on the most beautiful avenue in the world.

Set in the Art Deco décor of the Don Juan II, this dinner-only cruise takes in Paris's finest monuments , while savoring the best of French gastronomy from a multi-starred chef . Frédéric Anton is also in charge of the 3* Le Pré Catelan restaurant in the heart of the Bois de Boulogne , and the 1* Jules Verne restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Eiffel Tower .

This time, departure from Port Debilly - not Port Henri IV as before - opposite the Eiffel Tower for a night cruise on the ship's deck to sip a glass of champagne while watching the Iron Lady light up, and inside the ship for the chef's luxurious dinner .

Beautiful dinner cruise

The Don Juan was amazingly beautiful. The staff was attentive and the food was delicious. We were lucky enough to have our cruise on a clear sky night so we were able to enjoy the city of light at its best. I will agree with Lee H that the photographer took to much of our time trying to have my children posing for pics and it was late at night so even with flash it was not the easiest. Then during our dinner when we are trying to relax and enjoy the scenery here she comes again to sell us the pics. I got so annoy at the distractions that i told my husband to just buy the whole package just so i wouldn't have to make another selection, little did i know they were over EU500, that part was disappointing. Second time i went i nicely refuse to take any pictures and that took care of the problem.

From the moment we were invited aboard with champagne and amazing hors d oeuvres the atmosphere became one of lux-fun! The food was delicious and beautifully presented as well as paired perfectly with lovely wines to complement. The timing to see the Eiffel Tower in all its nightly splendor was perfection. From Hello to Au revoir was splendid!

This turned out to be one of our most enjoyable dinners. We arrived at the dock early and were met at our cab by a staff member who escorted us directly to boat. He led us to a stateroom with a fireplace and comfortable lounge chairs and took drink orders. Within a short time our drinks arrived along with a delicious set of hors d'oeuvers. A little while later we were given the opportunity to move to our table. (Each of about ten tables was set before a large window, with comfortable space between the tables.) The service was perfect. Each course interesting and superb. Other reviewers have mentioned the cost. It was for us a special occasion and the cost was clear before we made our reservation. From other reviews I had developed a little concern about the added cost of the wine served. However, there were many moderately priced choices and it was no different than the cost at a good restaurant. The lighted buildings and bridges of the Seine were a beautiful background for the evening. All in all it was a magnificent experience.

What a unique and special way to spend an evening in Paris. The boat ride was serene and showed us many beautiful sights and landmarks in Paris. All this whilst enjoying a truly delicious and well served 6 course meal. Absolutely top notch, would highly recommend!

Delightful cruise, seperate tables even for 2 people. Really looked after my elderly mother and made it a most memorable evening. Food excellent and no problems coping with dairy allergy. More expensive than others cruises, particularly as drink is extra, but well worth it for the space, quality and service. One point on getting there , DONT go all the way on the georges pompidou expressway! Our taxi drivers sat nav kept saying he was at the destination , but of course he was in a tunnel section - so unless you've brought a pick axe come off earlier and go up onto the quay!

We had dinner in Don Juan II during the weekend of my wife's birthday. Good atention,very good food and nice and quiet place. There were no many tables, so you didn't have the feeling of eating with your neighbour, and the staff were quick and helpful. They provided a blanket during the stop to see the Tour Eiffel.... I highly recomend the experience!!

I personally would not consider a dinner cruise as I have never heard of one that has excellent food. But you might consider Bustronome which I have done twice and loved it. The French dont call the holiday Bastille day, but rather la Fête Nationale or le 14 juillet.

You might consider the Alain Ducasse boat. called Ducasse sur Seine . This vessel is covered complete in glass and the views can be exceptional as is the food. Calling now would not be too early to inquire about availability. Dinner on this boat is truly magical anytime but for the Fête nationale, it would be the experience of a lifetime.
