Lyric mixup in I’m The Ocean (?), a great Homefires, Burned seemed to break down in energy and a wrong note. At least one start of a song that Neil ended for a redo. My Heart sounded good, Love Earth was nice, 4 strong Winds was nice. Vampire Blues! Debut? Overall it was the most problematic Neil show I have seen. He normally always nails it, But Jell, Neil is 77 years old or so. I am glad he is willing to tour the Left Coast. I am going to try to hit one more time & get a better listen. Your Brother Alan
I had no real expectations for Chris Pierce but enjoyed his set immensely. One cover and well crafted originals. A natural for train songs as hes also a gifted harmonica player. He's so honest tells a touching story of him at like 7. Very gracious i ran into him on his way to signing. We exchanged a few words and a hand skake. A very respectful crowd especially for being 8k. I was a lil worried going in. I sold the seat next to me for quite allot,,$183.00. they never showed. The seat to my left was open after 2 songs. Its was tight think a airline middle seat so i was very happy. The crowd waz adoring all night. His voice againg like fine Napa Cabernet. Funny too. Maybe my favorite liklline was Dont take anything up here for granted lol. They went knuts for the familiars . But even the lesser knowns were appreciated. Tight on the weed. But ive never seen more alcohol counters all serving the same brands. For a fleeting secord when they gave him Old Black I thought maybe my Hey Hey My My prediction might realize but then just as quik was rewarded w Vampire Blues 💙. Nice. He talked about David Briggs and Sleeps with Angels. Briggs impact is still felt. Love Earth was good . For such a big crowd the participation was lets call it lacking. I was trying to rally the crowd and he was well ive heard allot better. Each time more joined in. The louder it gets the more fun.. he said don't try to be perfect lol. He reminded me of Pete Seeger. Ol Pete wanted the crowd to join in but sometimes its like pulling teeth. 4 Strong Winds Was sublime. Bonus Comes a Time. Some ppl left shakin thier heads early thats ok. You do what you can and don't worry about the rest. A lovely night in Bend. I even walked from my Chateau 6 in a short 30 mins. He was happy all night. He kept askin how I was doing and I kept replyin various whoops and shrieks. Ohio was a nice sing along. There was a few thousand who know the words. Heart of Gold was sort of like friggin finally animation of the mass.
Thanks Brother Alan & wsanjose! good to hear reports from some of TW's most intrepid commenters. helps to keep it all REAL. that comment about Pete Seegar rings true. There are some parallels here...
I was a bit critical I my review of the show. I must also say that I could not hear perfectly, bobbing in the river on a kayak with my sweetheart. Logistics, kayaking, and my own ADD make enjoying a live show in this way a bit different. The locals and others on the river listening to Neil’s show numbered around 250-350 people. And it was a party, let me tell you. 15 people on one big mass of rafts and tubes, G strings (not the guitar string)… many were talking during the show, but we could hear fairly well. Truth is, you don’t even need a kayak. You can listen for free from a bridge or across the Deschutes river. But I had a plan and it worked well enough. I could not help but feel that a misfire happened in the first song with the flubbed lyrics of I’m The Ocean. For me, that song was the #1 for me, so to have a wheel in the ditch was a let down. But it was great to hear Neil play a set. I will report from my next upcoming show and tell a very different story, I think. Your Brother Alan in Bend

Not sure of the veracity of this report given that Neil's been pretty adamant about playing outdoor venues only for the time being. Would certainly be a hell of place to see him. Assuming Nils is no longer touring with Bruce by then. https://www.brooklynvegan.com/neil-young-playing-roxy-theatre-50-years-after-headlining-its-opening-night

Neil Young Confirms Coastal Tour With Special Guest Chris Pierce
After rumors swirled early this week surrounding Neil Young’s return to touring, the artist confirmed a string of West Coast dates, bringing his four-year break from the road to an end. The outing, named the Coastal Tour, will consist of 13 shows, picking up on July 1 and spanning until July 23. The limited run will also include special guest Chris Pierce.
Young will commence his tour in Los Angeles with a four-night stand at John Anson Ford, lasting from July 1 through July 5, (he will not perform on July 3) where he’ll deliver deep cuts instead of popularized numbers that have typically frequented his live sets. From there, the celebrated figure of rock music will take an evening off before popping back up on July 7 at the Santa Barbara Bowl in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The artist’s time in the Golden State will continue with a night at Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles, Calif., on July 8. Next, Young will travel back down the coastline, stopping in San Diego on July 11 before a return to the City of Angels on July 13 for a one-night stand at the esteemed Greek Theatre. Next, they’ll head north, stopping at The Greek in Berkeley, Calif., on July 15, before continuing through the Pacific Northwest.
With the vast majority of California dates in the books, Young will arrive at Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend, Ore., on July 17, before bringing his tour to Ridgefield, Wash., the next night. Young will perform one more show in The Evergreen State, stopping by White River Amphitheatre in Auburn, Wash., on July 20, before swinging back through California for the final stop of the tour: a July 23 gig at Oxbow RiverStage in Napa, Calif.
Today’s announcement comes after Young teased the forthcoming run via a live Zoom call with paid Patreon subscribers through the Neil Young Archives. During the video chat, Young spoke about the shift from fan favorites to less-played numbers, adding, “I don’t want to come back and do the same songs again.” He continued, “I’ll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I’d rather be doing these other songs I haven’t done… I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to [how I played it in] 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020.”
Young had also added commentary on the 15 tracks he plans to run through during upcoming appearances via Zoom, mentioning his 1995 Pearl Jam collaboration, “Song X,” and “Prime of Life” from 1994’s Sleep With Angels and others. “I did a demo of [‘If You Gotta Love’] a few years [after Trans] with a synclavier, a drum machine, harmonica, and some effects.” He added. “I listened to it [recently], and it turned me on again. I’m doing it with the organ and harmonica. It’s pretty cool.”
Tickets go on sale Wednesday, June 14 at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.com . For more information, visit neilyoungarchives.com .

Neil Young Coastal Tour
Looking back at the blockbuster success of "Heart of Gold," the mellow country-rock tune that became his first number one single and only Billboard Top 40 hit in 1971, Neil Young remarked that the song "put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch." Young wrote this passage for the liner notes of "Decade," a double-disc compilation that documented the first part of his career, ten years that took him from the pioneering Los Angeles rock and roll band Buffalo Springfield, through his emergence as a lone folk-rock troubadour and his alliance with Crosby, Stills & Nash, to his noisy, rambling wanderings with Crazy Horse.
Over the years, he would tap back into these different sounds and personas, but his avoidance of the middle of the road pushed him into eccentric territory his singer/songwriter peers would generally avoid. Young's willfulness could be as much a hindrance as an attribute -- famously, Geffen Records sued him for delivering albums that were "uncharacteristic" -- but his muse also led to a series of distinctive, indelible records whose legacy sometimes only revealed itself over time; eventually, the electro experiments of 1982's "Trans" were acknowledged as an artistic achievement, not a commercial disaster.
Many of Young's most enduring works arrived in the '70s, when he alternated between such bruised, beautiful introspection as 1970's "After the Gold Rush" and noisy guitar jams like 1969's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere," taking detours for such after-hours decadence as 1975's "Tonight's the Night." Young would follow this rough blueprint for years, swaying between noisy rock and intimate folk. Occasionally, his muse led him directly into the cultural zeitgeist, as it did during the 1990s, when he was hailed the Godfather of Grunge and collaborated with Pearl Jam, and he always felt compelled to address social ills, whether it was through his 2006 Iraq War protest album "Living with War or The Monsanto Years," a record about the environment made with Promise of the Real in 2015. Young often returned to his home base of Crazy Horse -- they backed him on efforts like "Barn" (2020) and the Rick Rubin-produced "World Record" (2022) -- yet despite these constants in his career, he remained a vital, unpredictable presence for decades, challenging himself and his audience.

Neil Young Announces First Tour in Four Years
The "Costal Tour" takes place in July
Neil Young has announced his first tour in four years.
For now, the “Costal Tour,” as it’s called, sticks to the west coast. The outing begins with four nights a the 1,200-person capacity Ford Theatre in Los Angeles. He’ll then move on to larger venues, including the Santa Barbara Bowl, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and Berkeley, and the Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend, Oregon. According to a press release, more dates will be announced in the future.
The tour will pull from the more obscure reaches of Neil Young’s catalogue, highlighting songs he has yet to perform live over his six-decade career. The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer prefaced the setlist choice to patrons of the Neil Young Archives , saying, “I don’t want to come back and do the same songs again. I’ll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I’d rather be doing these others songs I haven’t done… I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to [how I played it in] 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020…”
Among the songs Young intends to play are “Song X” from Mirror Ball , the 1995 album made with Pearl Jam; the Trans outtake “If You Got Love”; and “Prime Of Life” from 1994’s Sleeps With Angels . “They’re old songs. But I wake up with them in my head every morning,” Young explained. “They are songs that apply to my life right now, and apply to everyone’s lives in this era that we’re in. Some of them were written 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago, but never really played live.”
Despite his vocal suspicion that “touring is broken” due to Ticketmaster, seats to Neil Young’s 2023 tour will go up for grabs via Ticketmaster beginning Wednesday, July 14th at 10:00 a.m. local time.
Young broke his pandemic-related live hiatus in Feburary with a surprise acoustic set to Canadian protestors, followed by an on-stage reunion with Stephen Stills in April and duet with Willie Nelson at the latter’s 90th birthday concert. He also released an album with Crazy Horse, All Roads Lead Home , in March.

After making an unexpected comeback in 2023, the 78-year-old singer embarked on his first tour in five years, a 13-date engagement in the summer of 2023. Then, to promote their brand-new record F***in’ Up, Neil Young and Crazy Horse announced their Love Earth Tour in February 2024.
The tour began in San Diego in April of this year, but they haven’t performed since May 22, when they stopped at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan. The singer has now announced that the rest of the tour will be delayed and rescheduled.
“’We will try to play some of the dates we miss as time passes when we are ready to rock again!’ a statement on Young’s website said. “‘We know many of you made travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks for your understanding and patience.”
The next stop on the original schedule was to be in Toronto on Monday, July 8 followed by shows in Ottawa, London, Ontario, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver.
The tour was then scheduled to come back to the States on July 25 in Bend, Oregon, along with shows in George, Washington, Boise, Salt Lake City, Denver, Louisville, Dana Point, California, and Los Angeles.

Neil Young hits the road again with West Coast solo acoustic concert tour this summer
Neil Young is hitting the road along the west coast this summer – and apparently breaking out some little-heard classics.
The limited run of solo shows along the west coast begins July 1 with four consecutive shows in Los Angeles, a press release revealed Friday. Other stops include San Diego, then dates in Oregon and Washington, before ending in Napa, California. Singer-songwriter Chris Pierce will be a special guest during the Coastal Tour.
These will be Young's first series of live performances since before the COVID-19 pandemic. He skipped Farm Aid 2022, but in April he did perform at the Light up the Blues event in Los Angeles , a benefit for Autism Speaks held by former bandmate Stephen Stills, and at Willie Nelson's 90th birthday concert .
Young voiced hesitation to return to live shows amid the pandemic to USA TODAY in December 2021, while speaking on the release of the album "Barn" from him and Crazy Horse: "There is no post-COVID right now. We've got a whole 'welcome back' thing," Young said, who added he had no touring plans at the time. "Give me a break. This is misinformation. It is totally wrong. We are not over this. We're not anywhere near over it."

Most of the songs Young plans to play – about 80% – will be songs he has recorded but not played live, he told fans during a Zoom call Thursday with Thrasher's Wheat , an unofficial Young fan and news site.
Tickets go on sale starting Wednesday, June 14 at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster and other usual outlets. Members of the Neil Young Archives can attempt to get tickets during a presale period starting Monday, June 12.

Or, as Young put it in “Prime of Life,” one of the set’s highlights, “When I hold you in my arms, I forget what’s out there.” (Including stacked parking and mass shrieks a few hundred yards away.)
Young did lie about one thing, when he was setting expectations for the tour: He strongly implied that one song in particular would not be played. “I’d rather be doing these others songs I haven’t done,” he told fans in his website chat. “I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020…” He did do “Heart of Gold,” actually, to wrap up the pre-encore portion of the show, but out of 17 songs, that was one of only three that anyone could count remotely as a hit, per se, the other two being “Ohio” and the Buffalo Springfield ‘s “On the Way Home.” (And even that last one barely dented any charts and hasn’t usually been a staple of Young concerts, despite its classic-rock-firmament status.) Young did kind of make a point of allowing that “Heart of Gold” was a sop to audience expectations this time around. When he went into his first encore number afterward, “Love Earth,” a song from a 2022 album he’d never done live before, he noted that it was unusual to bring up a song few would recognize for the climactic portion of a show — but indicated he felt he’d earned it, pointing out he’d “just played my biggest hit of all time.”
Things may feel different in the larger confines of the L.A. and Berkeley Greeks, Vina Robles Amphitheatre, Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena, etc., but at the Ford, no justifications for the obscure stuff were really needed, for fans dedicated enough to have obtained tickets to his first full show in four years by any means necessary.
“Heart of Gold” happened to fit in with the time-shifting lyrical and musical tenor, anyway, of a set in which only CSNY’s topical “Ohio” really felt a little like the odd-song-out. (If you think this is actually a complaint that “Ohio” got played, save your calls, letters and @’s.) The point is that, even without throwing in “Old Man,” Young has always liked to portray himself as a man out of time, or out of the generational space-time continuum, way older than his years back when he was on Sugar Mountain and maybe younger than that now. He has rarely gotten so specific with his lyrics, at length, that you could say very many of his songs are flagrant anthems for a boomer generation. But the setlist for this tour sure includes a lot of songs that live up to the promise he made in his online chat about doing “songs that apply to my life right now, and apply to everyone’s lives in this era that we’re in,” even though “some of them were written 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago, but never really played live.”
Young has always walked a line between valuing the “Old Ways” (he did name an album that) and resisting the fogeydom of some of his contemporaries. “Days That Used to Be” could have been the mascot song of this setlist, as it had him singing, “I wish that I could talk to you, and you could talk to me / ‘Cause there’s very few of us left, my friend, from the days that used to be.” Mind you, this was a song he released on “Ragged Glory” back in 1990, when he still had a lot more career in front of him than behind him.” If he thought there weren’t many soul survivors around 33 years ago, how does he feel about it now?
That may remain a bit of a mystery, as Young spent a lot of time in the show talking about specific instruments that have been a part of his life, and none talking about specific people. This was part of the show’s charm, of course — he’s so little prone to obvious sentiment that you take it where you get it from him. He sat down at a nine-foot Steinway he said he bought for $1,500 when he left L.A. 50 years ago, talking about how he didn’t realize till later that it had been in a fire and “if you reach down and touch it (inside), your hand turns black.” Ash-incrusted or not, “it’s a pretty good piano.” Was he done talking about the bargains in his life? Hardly! Sitting down at a pump organ for “Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)” was cause to consider that “I love playing that song on that thing. I got it in a drug store on Main Street in Redwood City for about 800 bucks. I’m a good shopper.” He even reminisced about buying a flute for $2.49 at a drug store while walking outside the studio while recording “Sleeps With Angels,” though said cheapie appeared neither on the album or in this show. As for another piano he sometimes used on stage, “I rented it in Hollywood in ’68… It’s great to see it — and it’s great to see you,” he added. Our hearts may have fluttered a bit, there in the Ford, knowing he was holding us in the same regard as one of his prized vintage keyboards.
If there were any murmurs, it wasn’t about the deep-tracks content of the show, but its length, with the set clocking in on opening night at 85 minutes. That can seem slender in comparison to classic rock figures like Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello who’ve trained boomers to expect career-encompassing shows clocking in at two-and-a-half to three-plus hours. But if you weren’t counting things on a dollars-per-minute basis, this felt just right, for what it was designed to be — not the deepest catalog dive ever, but a swim through mostly neglected tunes that speak directly to where Young feels he’s at now. Anyone who missed the memo and came to hear “Powderfinger” may not agree — nor may the fans who’d like to get all the obscurities from “Archives Vol. II” in their 10-disc entirety. But the concentrated selectivity of this limited-edition tour feels like a feature, not a flaw.
Let’s hope he gets to a Crazy Horse tour, eventually, too, the way he’d planned to before the pandemic kicked in. (You can read our review of one of the few tryout shows he did with that reconstituted band in 2018 here. ) But when he does resume full-band touring, with whatever lineup that turns out to be, many of us who are seeing these solo shows will be feeling wistful for the time we got alone with Young.
Or almost alone; Bob Rice, the guy who brought him his guitars, did a bit of playing on two songs, contributing minimal vibraphone on “My Heart” and sitting in as a second pianist on “When I Hold You in My Arms.” The latter allowed Young to sit at that Steinway for most of the song but bring up the electric guitar he had at his side for a couple of gentle solos, on a night that was otherwise far from being about guitar heroics. Pump-organ hero? Yes, definitely. And also a more lyrical pianist than he might always be given credit for, when it came to “A Dream That Can Last,” by far the most prettily ornate song of the night.
Ending with “Four Strong Winds,” a song by fellow Canuck Ian Tyson, who died this past December, by way of “Comes a Time,” Young acknowledged the fragility of this whole artist-fandom relationship: “If the good times are all gone, and I’m bound for moving on / I’ll look for you if I’m ever back this way.” We could hope he ever does come back to the Ford — or, as he warmly and jestingly referred to it, “the Podunk Coliseum.” Louis Tomlinson should be so lucky as to ever play it.
