This trip passes through Sunbury Lock and the beautiful reaches of Sunbury and Hampton to Taggs Island, behind which you can view an authentic Swiss chalet. The boat also goes through the Desborough Channel to D’Oyly Carte Island and returns via the meandering old river, past Shepperton Manor, picturesque bungalows and gardens.

Our Mission

Its simple, we love boats and we love the river.

If you fancy taking the kids out on an adventure, having a romantic picnic with a loved one or finding a secluded spot to paint, write or watch the wildlife - we'd love for you to come and experience a wonderful day boating on the River Thames.

We operate our day boats from Easter to October. No licence is necessary as our handover with instructions and safety brief will be given before you embark on your trip. Life jackets are available for adults and children. Dogs are welcome on board too! 

Need some supplies for the day?

We offer teas and coffees, cold beverages as well as a large selection of food, all of which are absolutely delicious! Indulge yourself in a crusty bacon roll, toastie, sandwich or panini for breakfast or lunch or treat yourself to a slice of one of our fabulous handmade cakes.

We are also fully licensed if you fancy a glass of wine, prosecco or beer!

A river cruise is a great way to explore Surrey's towns, villages and countryside.

Not only does it give you an opportunity to relax and soak up areas of natural beauty, but you'll also be able to look out for wildlife and spot historical landmarks.

It's a wonderful way to spend quality time with friends and family and get away from television and computer screens and the stresses of everyday life.

Whether you are hiring a private boat and driving it yourself, or hopping onto a public boat and joining others, it's a great activity for all ages.

There are places in Surrey that allow you to hire out a boat for as little as an hour or as long as a week to give you the ultimate river experience.

Surrey Live had made a list of some of the top spots in and around Surrey that you can hop on with your friends and family and enjoy the River Thames and River Wey by boat.

1. Kris Cruisers

Kris Cruisers offers self drive boat hire on the River Thames near Windsor Castle.

Travelling upstream, a day's cruising from Datchet will bring you to towns such as Windsor and, on the opposite bank, Eton, then the pretty village of Bray and a little way farther on, Maidenhead with its memories of Edwardian punting heydays.

Their fleet consists of day boats seating from two to 12 people, plus fully equipped luxury holiday cruisers sleeping between two and 10 people.

If it's your first time operating a boat, staff will show you the controls of the boat, explain operating procedures and demonstrate where necessary.

You will also be given information about the rules of navigation.

All of the boats feature all weather canopies, stereo music systems and USB charging sockets.

Pets are welcome on some of the boats.

Boats are available for hire from April to October, 9am to 5.30pm.

However, if you are interested in hiring a boat outside these months, phone Kris Cruisers to enquire.

2. Farncombe Boat House

Boat hire is available daily from 9.30am-5.30pm from March until the end of October.

Passengers receive full tuition on how to handle the boat and operate locks before heading down towards Guildford to enjoy your day on the River Wey.

Each day boat can accommodate up to 10 people and the facilities on board include seating both inside and out, hot and cold running water and a toilet compartment.

There is a small fridge to keep your drinks cool, a two-ring gas hob and kettle, cutlery, crockery and glasses as well as a radiator for the cooler months.

Narrowboats can also be hired for weekends away or longer trips allowing you to cruise the River Thames as well to Windsor or down river to Hampton Court.

There are a seven narrowboats to choose from ranging from four to eight berth.

You can also hire a rowing boat, Canadian Canoe or punt.

These can be hired out by the hour and cost from £12 per hour.

3. The Runnymede on Thames Hotel and Spa

The four star hotel and spa has its own fleet of vessels which can be accessed via the hotel’s private jetty.

The collection includes self drive boats suitable for beginners and experienced skippers alike for day trips downstream or even for hosting celebrations.

The Antaris is a diesel-powered boat and is perfect for a full day on the river.

It can seat up to 12 people (self drive) or 10 people (skippered). Prices start at £100 per hour.

It features a fully collapsible roof for when it is sunny and there are drinks coolers to keep your favourite tipple cool.

The boat is fitted with a Bluetooth stereo to which you can connect your device so you can play your own music as you cruise along the Thames.

Alternatively, there is an electric-powered riverboat available to hire for up to one hour to a day and costs from £45 per hour.

It seats six people, it comes with a map, safety equipment and instructions and is ideal for families.

Skippers can be hired for £25 per hour and the hotel can provide picnics for £10 per person.

4. JGF Passenger Boats

JGF Passenger Boats has been providing private boat hire, corporate boat hire and public trips on the River Thames between Teddington and Staines for more than 45 years.

You can privately hire a boat during the day or evening and prices start at £500 for 45 guests. There are two other boats that can fit up to 80 and 150 guests.

Alternatively if you want to hop onto a boat with others, book seats on the Shepperton Cruise.

It is a 45 minute circular trip, departing from Cowey Sale and passing through the Desborough Channel to D’Oyly Carte Island.

It returns via the meandering old river, passing Shepperton Manor, picturesque bungalows and gardens.

After passing the boarding point, the boat continues through Walton before turning at the Swan Public House for the short return journey.

The season for this runs from March to October and tickets costs £9 for adults and £4.50 for children.

A fully licensed bar is available on board all of the vessels.

5. Hobbs of Henley

Based in the beautiful riverside market town of Henley, you can experience your very own self-driven boat on the River Thames or enjoy a public cruise or private charter.

The self drive fleet can seat up to 12 persons depending on the boat and can be hired from one hour, half a day or a full day. 

If you want to really get away from it and have a weekend or week’s holiday with a difference, you can hire a luxury motor cruiser which can accommodate up to six people.

You do not need a qualification to operate the self-drive boats and brief instructions are given before you set off.

Turks host daily river trips from April to September between Richmond, Kingston and East Molesey cruising past beautiful and iconic landmarks including Hampton Court Palace, Teddington Lock and Eel Pie Island.

Private boat hire is also available all year around including Christmas and New Year for 20-150 guests if you are thinking of throwing a party onboard.

Each boat has a fully licensed bar, heating and outside deck.

Passengers will be able to take a peek at stunning riverside properties and when you step off board, they can enjoy a large variety of pubs and restaurants.

There are four piers and they are all within walking distance of the London train and rail networks.

7. WeyDays Boat Hire

Based at Parvis Wharf Boatyard in Byfleet, Weydays operates self drive boats to enable people of all ages to explore the history of the River Wey, the abundant wildlife and the challenges of locks and weirs.

There are a variety of catering options from bring your own picnic, cooking on board or good old pub grub.

Full day, half day and holiday hire are all available.

The boast can be used for birthday parties, anniversaries, corporate outings or family trips.

The Mary Porter self drive boat is available for fours hours hire from 1pm until 5pm and can seat up to 12 people.

The price for this is a flat rate of £150 in July and August and £120 for the rest of the year.

This is a self-drive electric boating experience.

You are the captain and if you hire your boat for three hours you'll be able to experience the full stretch from Teddington lock to Hampton Court Palace.

No boating experience is necessary as training will be given upon arrival and you'll be given a route map to help you navigate your way.

A friendly crew will meet you at the steps to give you your boating instructions and provide life jackets for children.

Up to eight people can go on a boat, including dogs, and it is recommend to pack a picnic to munch on board.

One hour hire costs from £59 per boat, two hours from £89 and three hours from £119.

9. MBNA Thames Clippers

MBNA Thames Clippers is based in the capital and offers boat trips along the River Thames.

Passengers will be able to take in London’s most famous landmarks, sailing past the likes of the London Eye, Big Ben, Tower of London, The O2 and Battersea Power Station.

On board there is a bar, activity packs for kids and a free audio guide.

Services run at 20 minute intervals between key London piers including North Greenwich for The O2, Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Tower, London Bridge City, Westminster and London Eye for Waterloo, as well as several residential piers.

You can pay as you would normally do on the London Underground, by touching in and out with contactless or Oyster pay as you go.

Alternatively, you can book tickets online and print them out to show as you board.

The riverside walk and café you can find in Surrey after ringing a bell near the River Thames

Hopping on board a boat can be the best way to enjoy the River Thames. Over in Shepperton , you can take a small ferry boat across to Weybridge , where you can find a fabulous walk and café.

From near Shepperton lock, you simply need to ring a bell to hail the ferry, which darts across the Thames to Weybridge. If you were to drive, it would be more than a four-mile trip, but the ferry takes less than five minutes.

Following a scenic journey across the river, turn left and follow the river in a straight line. The path is flat and follows the Thames along, up towards Walton Bridge.

To the left, the river offers nature views and wildflowers, and rowers passing by. The track will take you up towards Walton Bridge, with views of homes and gardens that extend out onto the riverbank.

This part of the river is particularly shallow, and dogs love to run and splash in the water. It’s also a haven for ducks, geese and swans, so dog owners should be aware there are plenty of waterfowl they might want to avoid.

On the right, you will see a large car park and a small building, which is home to Wilde Brunch, a cute café with outdoor seating and good food. Items on the menu include wraps, chicken burgers, fish and chips, jacket potatoes, and cakes - which can also be taken away.

The café also caters for children, with sweet or savoury croissants, fish fingers and chips, or sausage and chips. It also sells little bags of sweets, and quack snacks for ducks, for £2.

If you fancy continuing the walk, go to the end of the car park, there will be a metal access gate. Follow the footpath through the trees and over a wooden footbridge.

From here turn right and follow another footbridge, and continue on the path on the left of a grassy meadow. Follow across another footbridge into the woodlands and remain on the path alongside Broad Water lake.

Pass horse fields, and turn right onto a tarmac road upon reaching a red brick school. There will be a gate, head through and follow the path by sports fields. There will be a road, cross it and join the footpath opposite the river.

From here, there are two options of either a longer or short walk. For the short walk, pass under two bridges, and back to the carpark.

Or add Desborough Island, by following the towpath and crossing the first bridge, and through a gate to the left. Stay on the left near the river, and follow the bend round, along the left side of a meadow.

There will be a hedgerow ahead, turn left towards the river and join the riverside path. There will be a large field on the right, and a white cottage where the path will end.

Easter Timetable (2022) – 15th April – 18th April

We offer up to a 45-minute boat trip when it comes to our The Easter Egg Boat Trip. It’s a circular cruise, departing from Cowey Sale, Walton Bridge and passes through the Desborough Channel to D’Oyly Carte Island and returns via the meandering old river, past Shepperton Manor, picturesque bungalows and gardens. After passing the boarding point, the boat continues through Walton before turning at the Swan Public House for the short return journey.

We have a fully licensed bar on board all of our vessels. During the duration of the trip snacks and soft drinks are on board, however we do not serve sandwiches.

At JGF Passenger Boats, we are fully licensed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and our fleets are only operated by our wonderful trained and qualified crew. Please note that we have Heating, Toilets and a 240v power supply on board our boats. Some also have full serviced Kitchens and are equipped for disabled access.
