There's an entire world of music inside Jacob Collier that he's happy to share with his audiences if you're lucky enough to attend one of his concerts. Using one-of-a-kind custom designed technology, he's able to replicate the complex harmonies from his YouTube videos in a live setting. He also scampers around the stage playing drums, percussion, bass, guitar, piano and synthesizer, all of which are sampled in real time to provide densely layered musical textures.

I saw him last fall at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and again last night at the San Francisco Jazz Center, and in the intervening months he has shown tremendous growth as a performer and entertainer. His set now includes a video component which is shot live every night and therefore is different at each performance. The videos added subtle nuances and shadings to his songs that made each of them a more complete emotional expression of his musical world.

In addition to performing several of his own compositions from his debut CD, "In My Room," his set also included songs by Stevie Wonder, George Gershwin, Lennon & McCartney and Bacharach & David. He takes the concept of a one-man band to an entirely new, dynamic and fascinating level and also lends new meaning to the phrase "playing with yourself." (Sorry, couldn't resist the cheap tacky joke!)

This was one of the best concerts I've ever attended! Jacob Collier is fantastic and a musical genius! I first heard about Jacob listening to a PBS fresh air radio broadcast and decided to look him up on you tube. I was so impressed that I got my husband who has a doctorate degree in piano performance to listen with me. He agreed that Jacob is a musical genius so I searched for tickets in the US and found the Bowery Ballroom performance. We traveled by train from Baltimore to attend and we would go see him again and bring friends this time! Come to the Baltimore/DC region, Jacob!!!

Jacob was fabulous! He is brilliantly creative, a great jazz artist (and all other genres). Highlights are him singing (unbelievable range and falsetto) and playing piano. Great band. Great sound team (he gave credit to sound technicians, which should be done more often because of how important they are). Electronic effects are amazing. In some ways Jacob reminded me of the next generation of Frank Zappa. Great entertainer, I need to see him again.

Best show, best songs, best atmosphere amongst the mid-aged public. Very few youngsters, surprisingly though.

A vivid performance and beautiful music, excellently mastering diverse instruments.

A deep bow, a deep thanks for the music.

Please come again.

The new musicians go well with the type of songs, it was, all in all, a beautiful evening.

Thank you Jacob !!!

Jacob Collier is truly an incredible talent, performer, musician, songwriter, etc. There's no other artist like him. He interacts with the audience really well and just seems to be such a genuine, fun, and intelligent person. Jacob's show was definitely an unforgettable (and almost unbelievable) experience.

The best audience experience ever. Never before has someone involved the audience so much in the musical experience. The production quality on this from audio to lighting is masterful. The other 3 musicians were fantastic as well. Such an extravagent show yet theres still many moments of intimacy.

That was the most incredible show I've ever seen. I could have watched it for a whole day and still felt like I couldn't get enough. Even if you don't know him but you have a chance go see him. It'll be the best concert you ever see and bring utter joy and awe

chsu2’s profile image

It was awesome! However, the venue was too small for all the people in there and there was no elevation whatsoever, so for us the short people it was impossible to enjoy thw full experience (bad bad venue). Jacob et all were awesome though

Jacob Collier has announced his biggest North American headlining tour to date for spring 2024, to celebrate the release of his long-awaited new album Djesse Vol. 4 (February 29, Hajanga / Decca / Interscope). Produced by Live Nation , the 31-date run will visit iconic venues including Radio City Music Hall on April 26, Philadelphia’s The Met on April 29, and The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on May 20. Five years have passed since Collier embarked on the epic musical journey of Djesse , which began as an ambitious idea to make one massive album. Djesse soon erupted into an expansive four-part series that encompasses every genre under the sun, culminating in a grand finale that combines all the elements that came before – and so much more. Through five GRAMMY wins and eleven nominations including Album of the Year for 2020’s Djesse Vol. 3 , dozens of collaborations and hundreds of performances, Collier’s talent and imagination have continued to exceed his own stratospheric heights and led his fans to expect the unexpected.

Tickets and VIP packages will be available starting with an artist presale beginning at 12pm ET on Tuesday, October 17. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general onsale beginning Friday, October 20 at 10am local time (11am ET for Radio City Music Hall) at jacobcollier.com/tour

Collier announced Djesse Vol. 4 the day after he headlined the Hollywood Bowl last month, and shared new single “Little Blue” (feat. Brandi Carlile) .  Watch the video , and learn more about Djesse Vol. 4 in Billboard or Collier’s recent appearance on the Zach Sang Show .

Djesse has so far included 37 songs, welcoming nearly 25 featured artists, plus gospel choirs, orchestras and more into Collier’s singular world. The list of special guests includes a diverse range of talents, from Ty Dolla $ign, T-Pain, Jessie Reyez and Daniel Caesar to Kimbra, Chris Thile, Rapsody, Tori Kelly, JoJo, Lianne La Havas, Oumou Sangare, Laura Mvula, Steve Vai, gnawa master Hamid Kasri and Take 6. Collier’s recent single “WELLLL” – a crunching slice of rock, pop and punk co-written with Remi Wolf – will also be featured on the new album, as will his GRAMMY-nominated 2022 release, “Never Gonna Be Alone” (feat. Lizzy McAlpine & John Mayer) .

From sweeping orchestral arrangements to intimate folk songwriting, and fusions of R&B, rap and pop, the multitudes of Djesse Vol. 4 are all centered around an ecstatic and global celebration of the human voice. In the midst of working on Djesse , Collier started turning each of his concert audiences into sprawling, improvised choirs. While conducting the crowd at rock clubs and Lincoln Center, even festival fields like Bonnaroo and Glastonbury, droves of fans have all been united in rousing harmony, furthering his guiding belief that everyone in this world is a musician. Having recorded each of his 80+ audience choirs, roughly 150,000 different voices play a role in the story and creation of Djesse Vol. 4 .

Throughout the evolution of Djesse , Jacob Collier’s career has grown to reach tremendous heights as a solo artist headlining the world’s greatest stages, as well as an in-demand collaborator. Djesse has earned Collier three GRAMMY Awards and six nominations. Overall Collier is a 5-time winner and 11-time nominee, making him the first British act in history to win four Grammys for each of his first four albums. In the last twelve months alone his audience choir videos have garnered hundreds of millions of views, he was the first-ever male to be featured as a Vogue Darling, he appeared on the July cover of Rolling Stone UK, and co-wrote and performed on seven tracks of Stormzy’s This Is What I Mean . He has also collaborated extensively with Coldplay and Chris Martin, performing with them on Saturday Night Live in February, as a featured guest at their Wembley Stadium shows last summer, and on their album Music of the Spheres . He has also contributed to major hits including SZA’s “Good Days” and songs by Lizzy McAlpine and Kehlani, and launched a signature line of music-making Crocs. Collier has recorded two NPR Tiny Desks, has spoken at the world-renowned TED conference twice, and has performed on TV shows around the world including the BBC’s Later with Jools Holland, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and more.

About Jacob Collier

Recognized by audiences, critics, and fellow musicians alike as one of the most gifted young artists of modern times, 29-year-old Jacob Collier already has a seemingly endless list of achievements including five Grammy wins along with 11 Grammy nominations including Album of the Year in 2021. As a result, his roster of collaborators is astoundingly varied and vibrant. Jacob’s voice has been featured on recent songs from the likes of Coldplay, SZA, Stormzy, and Kehlani. In his own projects, Collier has worked with an unpredictable cast of artistic powerhouses, from Malian singer Oumou Sangaré to John Mayer, T-Pain, Ty Dolla $ign, Daniel Caesar, and Tori Kelly (to name a few). Exploding onto the global stage with the viral success of his multi-frame, multi-instrumental YouTube covers, Collier caught the attention of Quincy Jones and under his mentorship released his debut album, In My Room , in 2016, which was recorded, produced, and played entirely by Collier. Djesse (his most recent 4-volume album project) has been a natural progression from the one-man process of In My Room , expanding to include collaborators from all over the world. The resulting volumes of Djesse have delivered on Collier’s ambitious promise, featuring an incredible array of artistic peers, and musical themes that encompass everything from orchestral composition to folk songwriting, R&B, rap and pop. Ultimately, although Collier has already achieved more than most artists could hope for in a lifetime, he is still restlessly creative. Alongside the upcoming release of Djesse Vol. 4 , he has plans for future projects centered on solo piano, orchestras, film scoring, teaching, musical theatre, and more.

It’s not often one encounters an imagination with the depth and prolificacy of Jacob Collier’s. Dubbed by many as one of the most innovative musicians of his generation, the 25-year-old approaches the world with an inspiring sense of curiosity and wonder.

A self-described autodidact, Jacob taught himself to play over a dozen instruments in his music room in London, guiding his own learning through a multitude of musical genres. In 2012, he began making YouTube videos where he arranged, performed, recorded, filmed and edited densely-layered compositions and arrangements, with his own unique DIY approach. These videos have achieved legendary status in the music world, attracting the praise of such luminaries as Herbie Hancock, David Crosby, Steve Vai, and Quincy Jones, who manages Jacob to this day.

At the end of 2015, Jacob crafted his debut album, In My Room, in his music room at home, which he produced, performed and recorded entirely by himself. The album topped 23 international iTunes Jazz charts and went on to win two Grammys. Jacob is the youngest ever winner in his two categories.

Jacob’s success has lead to television commercials for Samsung, Apple Beats, and Volkswagen. He aided in scoring a film for Dreamworks alongside Hans Zimmer, and performed at Coachella with Hans and Pharrell. His musical collaborators and fans include the likes of Coldplay, Ty Dolla $ign, Tori Kelly, Daniel Caesar, H.E.R., Charlie Puth, Kehlani, and YBN Cordae.

In January of 2018, Jacob began designing and creating a recording project on an unprecedented scale – a quadruple album called DJESSE: 50 songs, divided between four volumes, with each operating within a separate musical universe of sound, style and genre. Scattered across the four volumes are 30+ collaborators from across every facet of the music world, including Lianne La Havas, Oumou Sangaré, dodie, JoJo, Steve Vai, and Take 6, to name a few.

Jacob Collier Brings ‘Djesse’ World Tour To Brooklyn [Photos/Videos]

Acclaimed composer/arranger/bandleader/multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier  brought his mammoth  Djesse  world tour through New York City this past week for headlining shows at  Terminal 5 (5/4),  Brooklyn Steel  (5/6), and  Irving Plaza (5/7).

While he rose to prominence with his one-man-band performances and self-layered harmonies, Collier enlisted the help of a versatile backing band for the tour featuring Christian Euman  (drums/vocals),  Robin Mullarkey  (bass),  Alita Moses  (percussion/vocals),  Emily Elbert  (guitar/vocals), and  Bryn Bliska  (keys/vocals). With this highly capable outfit behind him, the London native is free to explore his many musical proclivities onstage, taking virtually every instrument for a spin in addition to singing both lead and harmony vocals.

In Brooklyn, he even managed to turn the audience into an instrument, directing the makeshift chorus through some impressively blended multi-part harmony at will. Of note, that “crowd instrument” on Friday in Brooklyn included Lawrence , the fast-rising NYC soul-pop outfit led by outspoken Collier fans Clyde  and  Gracie Lawrence . Though they did not perform with Jacob Collier and company, they did take the stage late in the set, decked out in Djesse merch, to add both an amusing dose of banter and a charmingly local, intimate touch to the performance.

The North American leg of Jacob Collier’s Djesse  world tour continues throughout this month with shows in Toronto, ON (5/10, early and late show); Montreal, QC (5/11); Cleveland, OH (5/13); Detroit, MI (5/14); Chicago, IL (5/15); Minneapolis, MN (5/17); Kansas City, MO (5/19); Nashville, TN (5/20); and Columbus, OH (5/21).

From there, Collier will head to the U.K. and Ireland for a run of June shows followed by a stretch of European tour dates throughout the month of July. After a late-summer break, Jacob Collier will resumer the  Djesse world tour with another brief run of European dates in late October and early November. Collier’s tour schedule also lists a number of dates in South America, Australia, and more for which the dates have not yet been revealed. About Lawrence As NPR writes, “siblings Clyde and Gracie Lawrence are not your typical pair.” They have been writing songs and listening to countless Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, and Aretha Franklin records in their family’s New York City apartment since they were little kids. After years of playing together, they officially created Lawrence , an eight-piece soul-pop band comprised of musician friends from childhood and college. The band has since gained a devoted following for its high-energy, keyboard-driven sound, which features tight, energetic horns and explosive lead vocals.

In July 2021 Lawrence put out its new album, Hotel TV , and became the first band to release music under Beautiful Mind Records, the label of Grammy-winning producer/songwriter/artist Jon Bellion, who co-produced and co-wrote the songs on the album. The tracks on Hotel TV have garnered tens of millions of streams across all platforms and have had multiple viral moments on TikTok and Instagram. Most recently, the album’s lead single, “Don’t Lose Sight,” was featured in an international Microsoft commercial, which propelled it into the Top 20 on the USA Shazam Pop Charts. The single also hit #33 on Top 40 radio and was played on over 100 multiformat stations across the country. The band performed “Don’t Lose Sight” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and closed both of their sets at Coachella with it (with the entire audience singing along)!

Touring has been a key component of the group’s rise to success. The release of Hotel TV was supported by the Hotel TV Tour, a 53-city tour across major cities in North America, including sold-out shows at Terminal 5 in New York City and House of Blues in Chicago and two nights at the Royale in Boston, among others. The band followed their Hotel TV Tour with a co-headline tour with MisterWives and then three nights of sold-out shows at Brooklyn Steel, which they curated with numerous special guests and nonrepeating sets. The group has also toured with acts such as Lake Street Dive, Vulfpeck, Jon Bellion, Jacob Collier, Soulive, O.A.R., and Bernhoft and has appeared at major festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Firefly, Okeechobee, Hangout, and Summerfest. TV appearances include Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Today show, and Last Call with Carson Daly.

Artist Jacob Collier Dazzles and Inspires Frost Students

By Jordan Levin 06-11-2024

Students at the Frost School of Music get to hear a lot of spectacular artists. But none quite like Jacob Collier, the chameleonic, charismatic, uncategorizable prodigy who’s captivated millions with his jaw-dropping skills, globe-trotting collaborations and mesmerizing   audience choirs , where he conducts thousands in improvised song. Collier visited the Frost School recently, drawing hundreds of thrilled students who lined up for hours to hear the multi-Grammy winning English musician.

“I love it here,” proclaimed   Collier , 29, from the stage of a packed Clarke Recital Hall, eliciting cheers as he donned a Frost School of Music sweatshirt offered by Dean Shelton G. Berg. Collier, who previously visited the Frost School in 2018, asked to return after a Miami Beach show on his Djesse Vol. 4 concert tour, and kept students spellbound for over two hours.

Collier didn’t just present, he engaged. “Let’s sing,” he began, before leading one of his famous audience choirs. Simultaneously playful and profound, Collier took students through his musical thoughts and inspirations, demonstrated complex harmonic concepts and riffed brilliantly on piano. He advised them, in multiple ways, to do what they loved and trust that the rest would follow.

“Ask yourself – what would you do if there was no chance of failure?”   Collier   said. “What matters to you? I became so interested and fascinated with what I was making that I forgot to think about everything else. I don’t remember thinking I want to have a career or build an audience. I wasn’t trying to compete for people’s attention.”

The students hung on every word, laughing and applauding. “I love how he’s very experimental and not afraid to be himself,” said junior Amilyah Robinson, a percussion performance major. “This is an amazing opportunity for me and lots of other students who love not only Jacob Collier but music. And it’s a wonderful opportunity to bring the music community together on campus.”

Impish and gangly, with a dancer’s fluid, expressive physicality, Collier's uninhibited persona only highlighted his eloquence and accomplishments. He described first experiencing music as a toddler sitting on the lap of his mother – a violinist, conductor and teacher at London’s Royal Academy of Music – as she practiced. “I’d look up and see the violin and it was so amazing,” he said. “I was right inside the music. That feeling never leaves you.”

His first musical loves were the likes of Bach and Stravinsky – and Stevie Wonder, his favorite artist. “When I was two, three, four, I just loved him immediately,” Collier said. “He really just stands for joy in the world. I’m also quite a joyous being, and I’m drawn to sounds and elements and people that light me up.” He didn’t mean just kumbaya sweetness. “Joy is broader and deeper than ‘let’s all just get along’,” Collier said. “It's about the alchemy to a more open or more communicative or cathartic state. Stevie doesn’t just write happy songs. He writes songs about the whole world.”

A child prodigy, Collier taught himself to play over a dozen instruments and produce, recording YouTube videos where he sang and played multiple parts. “From age seven to 20 it was all just me in a room making things,” he said. He went viral with a dazzling version of Wonder’s “ Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing .” His fans included legendary producer Quincy Jones, who became an   artistic godfather , leading to Collier signing with Jones’s management company and making his concert debut at the 2015 Montreux Jazz Festival with   Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea .

Collier has collaborated with a mind-boggling array of artists, from Coldplay to Lizzie McAlpine to T-Pain to Oumou Sangare, a process he described as “finding the divine in others" and "a kind of dance – you have to adapt yourself to the needs of whoever you’re working with.” In 2023, he released a version of Elvis Presley’s “ Can’t Help Falling in Love ” made from 100,000 voices gathered in audience choirs and Instagram submissions.

Collier repeatedly emphasized humanity, inspiration and connection over conventional ambition and strategies. “Don’t try to be cool,” he told a senior asking for career advice. “The world needs more warm people. There’s a big difference between reaching a lot of people and moving a lot of people. It’s so weird. It’s this really strange bright packaging culture filled with competitive marketing where people are starved for genuine stuff. So do things with deep integrity, with warmth.”

“I love how it’s not just about his music, but the whole community’s music,” said Yang Yang, a master’s student in jazz composition from China.

Don’t worry about hits, Collier said. “One of the things I’ve been most grateful for is I haven’t had a really big hit song,” he said. “People think that must be the best way of doing it - you definitely need a sudden influx of pressure and responsibility in your life, that’s gonna be great for your creativity. It’s not. I’ve had the luxury of being able to adapt to each stage of the pressure as I’ve gone along.”

He practices his own “Jacobean values.” “Treat everybody with respect, treat everybody with kindness,” he said. “You are open. Don’t toe the line. You don’t boss people around, or bully or manipulate people. Your team grows out of whatever your values are.”

“Don’t be put off by people who feel entitled to tell you to be someone that you’re not. You can’t change who you are. You can   grow   into who you are, and make decisions to prioritize that.”

Collier finished by leading students in a choir on “Somewhere” from the musical “West Side Story,” the ballad of yearning for a place to be oneself; gesturing, reaching, sculpting hundreds of Frost student voices into a soaring chorus of longing for an ideal. It was a perfect ending to a session that pointed the way to an infinite musical future.
