Is Dallas Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Dallas, United States

Texas : Safety by City

  • Corpus Christi
  • San Antonio

“Howdy, y’all!” Let’s explore the safety steps and incredible adventures of Dallas, Texas.

The Dallas-Fort Worth metro area is one of the top five largest in the nation, but don’t confuse Dallas with Fort Worth and vice versa.

They are very unique and distinct cities.

Dallas is home to several districts that might appeal to tourists:

  • Arts District: 20 square blocks of walkable downtown entertainment, art, shopping, and dining
  • Bishop Arts District: A more eclectic artsy vibe than the above-mentioned Arts District with unique shops, galleries, and cafes.
  • Design District: From antiques to high-end art, this stylish district offers breweries and more places to shop and explore.
  • Uptown: Even more shopping and dining with nightlife second-to-none.
  • Deep Ellum: Once a warehouse district but not a hub for nightlife, live music, and different varieties of bars.

Most of Dallas is within the I-635 loop, with several interstates connecting to nearby Fort Worth.

If you like barbecue, Texas can hold its own with other varieties throughout the United States.

You’ll have a hard time choosing just one favorite.

It’s not all urban life here.

The Trinity River runs through Dallas with a Greenway offering an expansive trail system.

Nearby Lake Ray Hubbard offers many ways to explore the water, giving much-needed relief during the humid summers of Texas.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Dallas

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

There's a medium risk across Dallas due to growing crime rates, including the homicide rate. This isn't a unique problem in Dallas. Many American cities of all sizes are facing rising gun crime rates. With a new police chief, there's a 29-page Violent Crime Reduction Plan. Time will tell if it works. Meanwhile, enjoy Dallas, but use common sense and caution as you would in any major city.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

DART is the public transportation system to get you between all the different districts. You can download the GoPass app to get route and payment information while live tracking your bus. Rideshare and taxis are going to be very easy to find. Driving your own car is a good plan too, but you will be dealing with traffic. If you are prone to road rage, take a deep breath before hitting a Dallas highway.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: MEDIUM

There's a medium risk of being pickpocketed or having a purse snatched, with 100 incidents reported in 2020. The theft rates have been fairly consistent going back to 2014. There's a one in 49 chance of being a theft victim.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

Dallas can get major storms, including tornadoes, flash flooding, and the occasional crippling winter storm. While not a traditional place for winter weather, when it does happen, power outages and road closures are common. All this adds up to medium risk, but be especially aware of the weather in the spring when the tornado season ramps up.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The robbery rate is more than three times the national average, but since the new policing plan was implemented, the rate has decreased significantly. There's still a lot of work to do. Less than 20% of the robberies happened in public places. While there's still a medium risk, this category is moving in the right direction.

TERRORISM RISK: MEDIUM

It's just such a large area that we have to give it a medium risk. An attack here could cripple transportation, distribution, and many top companies in the country. This is also the place where President Kennedy was killed in 1963. Those terrorism concerns come with a great presence and focus from Homeland Security.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

While there isn't an imminent threat of a tourist being scammed, it's smart to study the most popular scams against tourists in large cities. This includes fake rental listings, scammers pretending to be a front desk hotel worker and asking for personal information, or someone on the street pressuring you to buy tickets to an attraction. It's sad to say, but you can't trust anyone you meet in a new city. Always verify, ask for identification, and go to the front desk if anyone calls for information.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: MEDIUM

Women were the victims of 42% of the violent crimes, so men are actually more likely to be a victim. The sexual assault rate is slightly higher than the national average. We have to call this a medium risk due to all the other high crime areas, but be especially careful and rely on the buddy system when you're enjoying the great nightlife of Dallas. Don't go to a private place with someone you met online, and never accept a drink from someone if you don't see the bartender make it. One common trick women can use at a bar is to order an Angel Shot from the bartender. This is a cry for help, and the bartender will intervene on your behalf while you get to safety.

TAP WATER RISK: LOW

Dallas water is safe to drink and use for bathing, according to the 2021 Water Quality Report. All standards were met or exceeded.

  • Safest Places to Visit in Dallas

They say, “Everything is bigger in Texas,” and that’s no joke.

There are many big things to do, but don’t lose sight of the smaller neighborhood bars and unique dining options.

VisitDallas.com offers itineraries for lovebirds, families, girlfriends’ getaways, bachelor(ette) parties, and so much more.

One of the must-see locations is the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which walks you through that fateful day when the nation mourned the loss of President Kennedy.

I just watched the movie Parkland, which focused on that day and the following days from a more intimate perspective of JFK’s inner circle.

It also shows the downright depressing reaction of Abraham Zapruder, whose video of the assignation will forever be etched in our memories.

You learn about the doctors who tried to save President Kennedy’s life and then, shortly after, find themselves trying to save the life of the man accused of killing JFK.

There is more to this story than you’ve seen, and this museum is a great way to explore it.

The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum is another humbling experience of the Holocaust tragedy and how international human rights are still being fought for today and into the future.

The stories in the museum are emotional, inspiring, and resonating.

To lighten the mood a bit, because that’s a lot to take in, visit the Children’s Aquarium.

Get wet and wild with some of the coolest fish you’ll ever see up close.

You can do everything from petting a stingray to mining for gems.

It’s so fun you might never want to go above water again!

  • Places to Avoid in Dallas

The neighborhoods immediately east and south of the city’s center have the highest crime rates, but to be fair, crime is pretty spread out around the city.

The best plan for a tourist is to stay in touristy areas.

Stay on main roads and interstates, and don’t drive through neighborhoods unless you visit a friend or loved one.

In the summer of 2022, massive flooding hit Dallas with unprecedented rainfall in a short period of time

The downtown area was under water for a brief time, and highway traffic halted.

Never drive through a flooded roadway, especially in a city you aren’t familiar with – it’s just too dangerous.

Avoid planning outdoor activities if there are severe storms in the forecast.

Tornadoes are no joke here, and severe weather can drop large hail, intense lightning, and torrential rain.

The meteorologists in the Dallas television station market are some of the best in the business.

Never plan a day without checking the forecast.

  • Safety Tips for Traveling to Dallas
  • The Texas Department of Transportation has an extensive website for road conditions and traffic updates. You’ll be able to spot closures or delays ahead and get real-time traffic estimates. Live cameras provide a look at the road ahead of you as well.
  • There’s the M-Line Trolley for tourists to get around downtown. The cost of this is whatever donation you’d like to make. When you are ready to get off the trolley, just pull the overhead string, and you’ll be able to exit at the next stop.
  • You can read the 2021 Crime Reduction Plan front and center on the Dallas Police Department’s website. After hearing about how dangerous the city is, this might give you some peace of mind.
  • Remember all the COVID dashboards where we could see cases and such? The Dallas Police Department has a dashboard just like that but for crime analytics. It’s a great way to see crime trends and a heat map of the top crime neighborhoods with up-to-date information.
  • DPDBeat.com is a website separate from the regular police department’s website that is dedicated to the transparency of information and news releases.
  • Crime Stoppers is an anonymous program where people can submit crime tips without revealing who they are while still being eligible for a reward should their tip lead to an arrest. Rewards go up to $5000. The number to call is (214) 373-TIPS. You can also call a toll-free hotline at 1-877-373-TIPS.
  • Sign up for Dallas Alert to get weather notifications on your phone. You’ll get updates about storm watches, warnings, aftermath issues, or other emergency situations.
  • Download the ParkMobile app for a simple and safe way to pay for parking in Dallas. Each space will have a parking zone number, and you just tell the app how long you want to stay, and you’ll be charged for it. If you run over on time, you can add more money through the app. You can also call 1-877-727-5953 to add more funds to your parking spot.
  • The Dallas Police Department has a Crime Prevention section on its website with many ways to stay safe in this city. This includes a list of seven things you can do to deter auto burglars (did I mention 60% of all thefts are related to car break-ins?)
  • If someone in Dallas talks to you about the High Five, they don’t want a literal high five with your hand. That’s referring to one of the most baffling and layered interchanges known to man, right in the heart of Dallas. Plan to be confused or get lost going through this. Be patient, and a friendly wave goes a long way in Dallas if you make a driving error like cutting someone off or going too slow.
  • So... How Safe Is Dallas Really?

Dallas is REALLY trying to make itself safe with this unique approach to crime prevention and accountability.

Even criminologists are being used to help spot patterns and the best ways to tackle problems.

However, it’s a big city with big city problems.

America has a gun problem, and people in Texas love their guns.

America has a drug problem, and not even a friendly place like Dallas is immune to that.

Here’s how the risks break down in Dallas:

  •  Violent Crime: 1 in 113 risk
  • Robbery: 1 in 396
  • Theft: 1 in 49

Half of the violent crimes here happened against strangers, and less than 30% happened in private homes.

That means nearly 70% of violent crimes are in public spaces.

Meanwhile, just 18% of robberies were in public.

There’s always safety in numbers, so going on tour groups is smart.

Traveling with friends, especially at night, is going to help too.

Dallas people are a unique breed, so even when you meet new friends, never talk about guns in a negative light.

Don’t argue about politics and certainly don’t say anything but AMAZING things about the Dallas Cowboys and their cheerleaders.

There’s too much great stuff to see in Dallas to avoid it, but you’ll need to be aware of your surroundings in this city of 1.3 million people.

Most of all, always trust your gut instincts.

  • How Does Dallas Compare?
  • Useful Information

You must plan ahead to get a U.S. Travel or Work Visa. Ideally, plan three to four months ahead of time. Be sure to schedule your in-person interview at the embassy ahead of time so you can reserve your spot. Some countries are backed up for months. You'll need a visa to get in and out of the country, but you can travel freely throughout Texas without showing it. Store it in a safe place until you leave.

The Big D takes the USD (U.S. Dollar). It's the only currency you can use, and there are many ways to spend it. Try to purchase as much as possible through apps or online ahead of time. Don't pull out your wallet any more than necessary and if you do get cash, use an ATM inside a bank or business.

Aside from a rogue winter storm, you can get by in Dallas without a winter coat. However, you might see people dressed like a blizzard is coming. The fashionistas of Dallas don't want a chance to miss a "season," even if it's 70°(F) outside. Winter is going to be hot and humid. You'll sweat a lot. Bring your own cowboy hat if you'd like, but never touch another man's hat.

DFW airport is about 40 minutes from downtown Dallas, right in between Dallas and Fort Worth, while Love Field is slightly closer to downtown. Either way, you'll be sitting in traffic to get there, so check "travel time" on your GPS to ensure you have enough time to get there.

Travel Insurance

You definitely want travel insurance because of the number of delays that can happen here and the severe weather that can cripple air travel.

10 Reviews on Dallas

Lived in Dallas most of my life… spent plenty of time near downtown. I have never been a victim of pickpocketing.

Be Cautious & Aware of Surroundings

I’ve lived in the metroplex for 15 years. Dallas is an awesome city to visit. I would be cautious when visiting Fair Park, Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts District and South Dallas. Fair Park is great to visit during the State Fair or a major event. Victory Park area is a good place to visit. It has Perot Science Museum, Dallas Museum of Art and Klyde Warren Park. I prefer Far North Dallas just because I can be less cautious. I prefer the areas from Oak Lawn to Preston Hollow, including University Park, Highland Park, and White Rock Lake Park. I live in the Far North area that includes cities of Richardson, Addison, Plano, and Frisco. Please note when visiting anywhere you should be aware of your surroundings.

Dallas is safe for tourists

there aren’t any pick pocketers here lmao. everything else is accurate. stay away from all of those neighborhoods mentioned. wherever there is a large mix of people like the state fair of texas – in fair park – be vigilant to certain groups of people starting problems.

I'm a local-born & raised.

Lived my entire life in north Dallas area. It’s safe and now you can carry a cancelled hand gun legally. No worries mate.

Long story short…. North Dallas is much better than South Dallas.

Reconsider Dallas

Dallas is miserable. It’s climate is awful with high temps and humidity in the months from April through September.

Racial strife is not spoken of publicly but it does exist. School board members who throw chairs in school board meetings. A City council member who screamed at a female city manager and called her a queen because she hired the best police chief Dallas has ever had in Ben Click. Additionally a young Dallas police officer gunned down in downtown with locals at a bus stop egging the shooter on.

An overall miserable traffic situation exists. Overall a terrible place.

These are a few stories of BIG D. Go to Ft Worth 35 miles west for real western flair and more friendly people.

Safe for it's size but not really a tourist place

I live here and Dallas is pretty safe for a city it’s size. Dallas is a VERY car centric city, so as a tourist if you are in the main tourist area and/or taking the DART train to various places (the DART pretty much runs parralel to all the places you would want to see as a tourist) you will be perfectly safe since it would be near impossible to go to the bad areas without a car. Even the sketchier areas are fine in the day time overall, but again you wouldn’t really have any reason to be in that area unless you are driving to a restaurant or shop located there.

Just be vigilant at nighttime and ignore the crazies on the street you will be fine.

The only reason I give it 3 stars is that it is not really a tourist city. For the 9th largest city in the USA, and 4th largest metroplex, there is really no reason to come here as a tourist. It is just a generic city people work and live in.

I’ve been to Dallas multiple times and always felt safe exploring the city. Like any urban area, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings.

My family and I visited Dallas last summer, and we were impressed by the city’s safety measures. We enjoyed walking around downtown and visiting various attractions without any concerns.

I recently traveled to Dallas alone for a conference, and I was pleasantly surprised by how safe I felt throughout my stay.

Here’s How the 2024 Solar Eclipse Will Impact Air Travel

Meghna Maharishi and Elizabeth Casolo, Skift

April 4th, 2024 at 8:51 AM EDT

The solar eclipse will have a minimal impact on air travel, but airlines are operating a slew of flights that will give flyers a special view of the once-in-a-lifetime event.

Leading up to April 8, cities in the eclipse’s path of totality prepare for an influx of tourists. But, even with some extra traffic for airports and airlines, operations likely won’t look too different.

Skift named April’s eclipse “this year’s top travel phenomenon,” with cities such as Buffalo, Indianapolis, and Dallas gearing up for the big day. Some airlines offered specialized experiences for eclipse travel, and tourism bureaus coordinated events to celebrate the evening.

With these plans in place, those flying in may wonder about what to expect in the air.

Will There Be Any Travel Disruptions?

It’s possible. The Federal Aviation Administration warned of potentially higher traffic at airports in the eclipse’s path.

“Traffic should anticipate delays during peak traffic periods,” the FAA said in a statement .

Some airports did not express concern about incoming travelers but still plan to take precautions. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority operates the Niagara Falls International Airport and Buffalo Niagara International Airport, two airports on the eclipse path. NFTA Aviation Deputy Director Russell Stark said air traffic control is preparing for more traffic, but the airport itself has not observed more traffic than usual.

“We have not seen any increase in the traveling public coming via airplane,” Stark said. He expressed concern about the roadways beyond the airport and does not have enough information to know if air traffic from other airports would impact arrivals or departures.

A spokesperson from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport also did not have clarity on the airport traffic, but “the airport’s rental car partners… expect to have the busiest days on record for car rentals around the time of the eclipse.”

Other than the special eclipse flights run by certain airlines, Indianapolis International Airport does not foresee a big change in operations. The airport estimates the highest traffic period will be April 9, as people leave the morning after the eclipse.

“Nearly 20% of our traffic on Tuesday, April 9, will be departing by 7 a.m.” said Megan Carrico, director of public affairs for the Indianapolis Airport Authority.

So, while there may be more air traffic congestion in the hours after the eclipse, expect busier roads in cities along the eclipse’s path, as well.

What Are Airports Doing to Prepare for the Eclipse?

The FAA advised airports to minimize procedures that could take attention away from potential traffic. The agency said pilot training operations at airports may either be “extremely limited” or “possibly prohibited” during the eclipse.

“The bottom line is it’s ‘operations normal’ around here with a few minor changes on our part,” Stark said. Stark emphasized that contractors working on projects around the airport need to prioritize eclipse safety, something that’s been incorporated into their daily briefings. NFTA employees also have access to eclipse glasses in case they work outside during that time.

Carrico said Indianapolis International Airport will apply its experience handling traffic from major sporting events during the eclipse. The airport also partnered with art students and Visit Indy to make decorative posters commemorating the event.

Is It Safe to Fly in the Middle of a Solar Eclipse?

Yes. Whenever a plane is in the path of a solar eclipse, the sky will look dark for a few minutes. A solar eclipse doesn’t interfere with an airline’s operations — it’s almost no different than flying in the night, said Dr. Frederic Bertley, the CEO of the Center of Science and Industry, a museum in Columbus, Ohio.

“It shouldn’t impact how the aircraft itself will fly in terms of solar radiation or flares or darkening of the skies,” Bertley said.

A solar eclipse wouldn’t impact a pilot’s ability to fly an aircraft, either.

“It’s really from an aircraft and a pilot’s viewpoint,” Bertley said. “It’s just a matter of light versus less light. That’s all it is.”

The Air Line Pilots Association said pilots could expect to see skies as dark as night if they are flying in the path of totality. Otherwise, travelers on flights further away from the path may see a dusky sky.

Can I Experience the Eclipse From a Plane?

Yes. While many may purchase solar eclipse sunglasses to view the event from the ground up, witnessing it on a plane can also have its benefits.

The main advantage of viewing an eclipse from a plane is that it’s above cloud cover, which could offer the clearest view. Bertley said around 40% to 60% of the country that’s in the path of totality will most likely have some cloud cover.

And while someone on the ground might see an eclipse for a mere two to three minutes, a passenger on a plane in the path of totality could possibly view the eclipse for as long as six-and-a-half minutes.

This is because a plane flies at around 500 miles per hour while the eclipse moves at 1,000 miles per hour, which essentially gives passengers the ability to see 50% more of the eclipse, Bertley said.

However, for passengers on flights that are in the path of the eclipse, where you sit on the plane to view the eclipse matters. For example, if a traveler is on a flight leaving from Texas that goes along the path of totality from west to east, that traveler would need to sit on the right side of the plane to view the eclipse. Passengers sitting on the left side in this instance won’t see the eclipse. According to a spokesperson at Delta Air Lines, though, the airline is working with the FAA to approve S-turns on its special path-of-totality flights, ensuring both sides of the plane can view the eclipse.

American Airlines also said it was working with the FAA to ensure smooth operations and was anticipating increased air traffic at locations in or near the path of totality.

Delta offered a special flight from Austin to Detroit that covers the path of totality. After this flight sold out in under 24 hours, Delta started offering a flight from Dallas Fort Worth to Detroit . United Airlines is offering a slew of flights from Chicago and Houston that will allow travelers to catch a glimpse of the event. And Southwest Airlines has flights departing from Dallas Love Field, Austin, and St. Louis in the eclipse’s path.

Expect a busy travel day if you’re going to DFW Airport or Love Field on April 8

Above-average passenger volumes are anticipated thanks to the total eclipse.

Monday is going to be a busy day at Dallas-Fort Worth airports. Thousands of travelers are expected to arrive in North Texas on April 8 in hopes of viewing the total solar eclipse.

Even though the latest forecasts aren’t looking too bright for visibility , DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field are anticipating more visitors than usual.

More than 15,000 people are estimated to arrive at Love Field on Southwest Airlines flights, and there are more than 19,000 local departures and transfers planned.

DFW’s airport’s rental car partners expect to have the busiest days on record for car rentals around the time of the eclipse, said an airport spokesperson. Nearly every rental car agency is sold out for the April 8 event , and the few cars that are left are demanding rates of $600 a day and higher.

The uptick in planned travel has prompted several Texas counties to issue states of emergency, and the Federal Aviation Administration has warned of travel delays at some airports , including DFW International Airport.

Standard high-volume traffic procedures will be implemented on the day of the eclipse if it’s needed at Love Field. These include measures like having extra staff, enhanced monitoring of facilities and security and traffic patrols.

Drivers are recommended to seek safe viewing locations during the eclipse to avoid endangering themselves or others.

Like any busy travel period, a Love Field spokesperson advises local travelers to arrive at least 90 minutes before their departure time to account for potential congestion in parking, traffic, check-in and security screening.

The eclipse could bring traffic jams to Dallas-Fort Worth

N ext week's total eclipse is expected to draw so many visitors to Dallas-Fort Worth that state officials are warning traffic could be a mess.

Why it matters: This is the region's first total solar eclipse since 1878 .

  • Texas is one of the prime spots for Americans to see the eclipse.

State of play: The region is expecting thousands of visitors this weekend and on Monday for the eclipse. Hotels around downtown Dallas are already 99% booked , per a city memo.

  • Traffic is expected to be especially heavy around parks and other outdoor viewing areas.

The intrigue: Road congestion is likely to be bad enough that Dallas has canceled trash and recycling pickup for Monday. All sanitation collection will be delayed by a day next week.

Flashback: About 12 million people lived in the path of totality for the total solar eclipse in August 2017. Nearly 32 million people live in the path of totality this year, per NASA .

  • D-FW got a partial view of the 2017 eclipse, and Texas Department of Transportation officials said that event served as a lesson for how to prepare for this year.
  • The agency has been preparing for two years for this eclipse, getting equipment and traffic signs together to help direct traffic safely.

What to do: Pull over and park before looking at the eclipse. Don't stop on highways or major thoroughfares, per TxDOT .

  • Don't wear eclipse glasses while driving.
  • Keep your headlights on April 8, because the eclipse will make it darker.
  • Be prepared for sudden stops.

The bottom line: Don't look directly at the sun. And arrive early to wherever you plan to watch the eclipse.

TxDOT prepares for increased traffic on ‘Eclipse Day'

Around a million people are expected to travel to and through texas for a view of the eclipse in totality, by larry collins • published april 5, 2024 • updated on april 5, 2024 at 8:46 am.

With less than a week until the solar eclipse, around a million people are expected to travel to and through Texas for a view of the eclipse in totality.

TxDOT urges those who live in the areas of totality to gas up during the weekend and be prepared for heavy traffic on Monday.

480 miles of Texas are in the “path of totality,” which means there will be an influx of eclipse tourism and packed highways.

TxDOT says their number one goal is to keep roads open and traffic moving and that takes increased planning and manpower.

Crews have equipment and traffic signs to help direct traffic and will have 24-hour emergency operations on Eclipse Day.

Drivers may notice a change to highway signs. They will say, “No stopping on the highway to view eclipse” and “No parking on the shoulder. Keep moving.”

“It's really important to not try to view this eclipse while driving you know you can't drive distracted you can't be looking in the sky and then also be looking on the on the road,” TxDOT representative, Adam Hammons said. “Don't have eclipse glasses on while driving it may sound obvious but those eclipse glasses are there to block the sun so they're going to limit your vision as well.”

Wildflower wonderlands

All the best bluebonnet spots in dallas-fort worth and across texas in 2024.

Bluebonnets, longhorns, Ennis, Ennis Bluebonnet Trails

Longhorns graze in a field of bluebonnets in Ennis. (Note: Not taken in 2024.)

Texas' beloved bluebonnets are putting on their annual spring show across the state, and - as predicted - they're looking superb. As calendars flip from March to April, freeway embankments, landscapes, and fields all across Dallas-Fort Worth are awash in blue.

That means it's time for nature treks, photo shoots, and picnics among the blooms (without stepping on them, of course).

Following are areas in DFW and around Texas where people have reported 2024 bluebonnets and other wildflowers, or where they're looking reliable for pretty photos further into April. Just like the flowers, this list will continue to grow, so bookmark it and check back often.

The Ennis Bluebonnet Trails , North Texas’ No. 1 spot for bluebonnet spotting, opens April 1 and runs through April 30. The trails wind visitors through 40 miles of picturesque wildflowers in a spectacular setting that includes rolling hills and pastures with grazing horses, longhorns, even swans on a pond. Not all flowers bloom at the same time; be sure to stop at the Welcome Center for a map and expert guidance.

The flowers are expected to peak around April 18-21, coinciding with the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival . There typically are gorgeous fields along Sugar Ridge Road on the North Loop Trail. Those interested in making the trek about 40 miles south of Dallas can check out maps and updates on the website and social media channels. Download the Ennis Y’all mobile app to get all the information on your smartphone. Be warned: Ennis will be a hot spot for eclipse tourists on April 8, so traffic will be especially heavy that day.

Dallas-Fort Worth parks, roadsides, and fields

Many Dallas parks have Natural Areas, where colorful flowers dot pathways and fill "no mow" fields in spring. According to the Dallas Park & Recreation website , parks with wildflower areas to watch for include: Flagpole Hill, Harry Moss Park, Bachman, Grauwyler, Kessler Parkway, Gateway, and more.

The Laura W. Bush Native Texas Park , a 15-acre urban park on the grounds of George W. Bush Presidential Center at SMU, features a one-mile network of trails that walks visitors through native Texas environments, including spring wildflowers. Besides bluebonnets, the mix typically includes Winecup, Pink Evening Primrose, Plains Coreopsis, Engelman Daisy, Foxglove, Prairie Spiderwort, White Prairie Clover, Prairie Verbana, Texas Yellowstar, and more. Guided tours are available, and you can download a guide to the flowers here .

Bluebonnet Trail Greenbelt in Plano was filling up with bluebonnets by the last week of March, with many more to come. Bluebonnet Trail runs from Central Expressway to Midway Road, following an Oncor power line easement and along Spring Creek Parkway and Chase Oaks Boulevard; it intersects with the Chisholm Trail in the middle of Plano and connects with the Preston Ridge Trail at Carpenter Park. View maps of the trails here and here . While in Plano, also check out the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve (6701 W. Parker Rd.) and Russell Creek Park (3500 McDermott Rd.), known to have some beautiful wildflowers, too.

Richardson parks are also reliably good spots, as the city's Parks & Recreation Department annually plants more than 45 acres of wildflower seeds in municipal parks, street medians, and around the City Hall campus. Residents get in on the planting fun, too, through an initiative called " Operation Bloom Town ." The colorful spring blooms - not just bluebonnets but a "Richardson mix" of flowers - then build up excitement for the Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival, May 17-19 at Galatyn Park.

Frisco parks

  • Freedom Meadow at the Warren Sports Complex (7599 Eldorado Pkwy.) is one of the most popular bluebonnet photo hot spots in DFW each year. The flowers, on five acres near the 9/11 Memorial, are getting revved up now for April visitors.
  • Zion Cemetery in Frisco/Little Elm (FM 423 just north of Eldorado Parkway) is also a draw, but it comes with a caveat: It now has "no trespassing" signs. You may have to get creative taking photos from a distance, rather than walking through them.
  • The city of Frisco also recommends the following parks with natural areas where wildflowers thrive: Frisco Commons Park Meadow (8000 McKinney Rd.), Monarch View Park (1900 Koehn Dr.), Pearson Acres Park (7550 Teel Pkwy.), and Wildflower Loop along Big Bluestem Trail at Grand Park (5001 Cotton Gin Rd.)

DFW Airport area-freeways Stopping beside a highway or posing for photos on the side of the road is never advised, but the lush fields along the freeway embankments near DFW Airport are always a thrill for visitors arriving in the Metroplex or local drivers happy to call Texas home. By the last week of March, bluebonnets were filling both sides of SH 183/121, SH 161, I-635 near the airport, and along S.H. 114 from Grapevine toward Irving.

Irving/Las Colinas has so many picturesque fields, parks, and patches of bluebonnets, Visit Irving has produced a whole guide . Some recommendations from the city and from spotters in the area:

  • Cottonwood Creek Park , 4051 N. Story Rd., is blooming now with more to come.
  • Campion Trail , a master-planned, 22-mile greenbelt along the Elm Fork and West Fork of the Trinity River, is known to have some blooms at both the north and south ends of the trails, near the freeway. (A map is here .)
  • Dallas College North Lake Campus' main entrance off MacArthur Boulevard is reliably pretty, plus it's quiet and safe as it's not near a highway. (Address is 5001 N MacArthur Blvd. Here's a map .)
  • Highway 114 westbound before Cisterian Road (near the University of Dallas Dart station). Also find them between Cisterian Road and Riverside.
  • Highway 183 and Beltline Rd. near South Irving has a perennially popular field.
  • Las Colinas Boulevard, from Hwy 161 to Northwest Highway.

Grapevine always has reliable spots around Grapevine Lake. The roadways around the city (such as 1171 and High Road) are beginning to pop; they've been spotted up and down S.H. 114 between Grapevine and Northlake and between Grapevine and Irving. A favorite field for photos is next to the Toyota of Grapevine dealership, at 701 E State Hwy 114. Spotters say to head toward the Comfort Inn for the best patches; they're starting to flourish as of late March.

Cedar Hill State Park , a favorite place for mountain bikers, typically has bluebonnets popping along the trails. Visitors are sure to see some on a guided hike , and the ranger-led sunrise hikes are especially rewarding. In Cedar Hill, look for lots of bluebonnets near the interchange of I-20 and I-30, as well as at I-20 and FM 1382.

Fort Worth Botanic Garden/BRIT has thousands of spring flowers blooming, but you'll see some bluebonnets, too. "As the weather warms, beloved Texas bluebonnets will cover the South Vista," says the website. Other colorful spring blooms that typically dot their landscape in March and April: Pansies, Dianthus, Snapdragons, Alyssum, Narcissus (daffodils), Summer snowflake, Mexican plum, Redbud trees, Lady Banks’ Rose, daisies, Hardy gladiolus, Coral honeysuckle, and more. BRIT has an informative article on "the botany of bluebonnets" here .

Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge typically has bluebonnets popping at the end of March, along with picturesque redbuds, and more natural wonders. The best way to find them is to take a naturalist-led tour.

Airfield Falls Trailhead and Conservation Park , home to Tarrant County’s largest natural waterfall, is also a great place to see native flowers, wildlife, and monarch butterflies. Find it at 200 Pumphrey Dr., in Westworth Village, and spend an afternoon meandering the pathways and relaxing in nature.

Benbrook has several reliable spots each year, including patches at Longhorn Park overlooking Benbrook Lake & Dam; at Dutch Branch Park and Athletic Complex ; around the Benbrook Community Center/YMCA athletic fields; and near the Fort Worth Youth Soccer Association fields.

In Mansfield , the flowers at Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park perk up for a nice showing each spring. Stroll among them on either side of the walking trails.

Clark Gardens in Weatherford will have bluebonnets "by the thousands," as well as other abundant wildflowers out in full force in April, they say. Check out what's blooming, garden hours, admission, and more important information on their website .

Hill Country-Central Texas Just a few hours out of DFW, wildflowers are peaking by early April, but there are still gorgeous fields. Here are some top places to go in the Central Texas/Hill Country region. (Note that the Hill Country is also in the April 8 eclipse's path of totality, so avoiding travel that day is advised.)

Marble Falls Bluebonnets are painting the landscape all over this popular Hill Country town (and home to the famous Blue Bonnet Cafe). Look for bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, yuccas, and many other wildflowers flourishing all over the area. Turkey Bend Recreation Area is always a specific hot spot. An old house off SH 281 called, simply, "The Bluebonnet House," is the setting for many picturesque photo shoots; read about it here . Check out the guide to this year’s best flower fields here . They even have scenic wildflower drive recommendations, here .

Burnet Known as the "Bluebonnet Capital of Texas," this town off S.H. 281 is known for its abundant spring blooms. The stretch of Highway 29 from Burnet to Llano has been described as "amazing" in late March. Take Ranch Road 2341 from S.H. 29 to Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park , where some of its many miles of trails wind among wildflowers. Another good spot is Inks Lake State Park (specifically the Pecan Flats area), which typically has gorgeous bluebonnets and fragrant mountain laurel. The beloved Burnet Bluebonnet Festival , April 12-14, includes live music, a carnival, food, races, birding and, of course, flowers.

Mason County This county west of Burnet and Llano, on 29, is in the heart of bluebonnet country, and recent reports say it's awash in color. Great for meandering on backroads (but stay off personal property, of course).

Fredericksburg Fredericksburg is synonymous with bluebonnets in Texas. A March 20 report on the Visit Fredericksburg website says, "The 2024 wildflower season is underway and is predicted to continue through mid-May. Experts are saying that with recent and predicted rains, the season will be exceptional through April. If no additional rain is received, the season will remain strong." While you'll see the blooms all over the region, a good first stop is always Wildseed Farms , the largest working wildflower farm in the country, which will be in full bloom in April. Other recommended spots include Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park , Enchanted Rock State Natural Area , Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and LBJ State Park and Historic Site (Stonewall), and the Luckenbach area. The Fredericksburg Bluebonnet Festival will take place Saturday, April 20.

While you're in the area, don't miss the ...

Willow City Loop One of the best bluebonnet drives in Texas is the 13-mile, two-lane Willow City Loop . A lot of people start in Fredericksburg, take State Highway 16 north about 13 miles and turn east on Ranch Road 1323 to Willow City. It's a pretty drive through wildflower wonderlands, traversing hills and creeks, offering gorgeous views of meadows and valleys. Late-March reports say the "last half" of the Willow City Loop is the prettiest. Warning: Roadside property along this route is private, so no wandering into the fields.

Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area , Spicewood One of the hottest bluebonnet spots in Texas in spring 2024, Muleshoe Bend has the lush flower fields that look like purple-blue oceans. They are peaking in late March. The bluebonnet fields at this public park northwest of Austin are more abundant than they have been in the past, although some discriminating spotters say they're not quite as good as they were in 2023. There usually are large patches of flowers on the riverbank, and it's easy to drive around and park a car to set up and take time for photo shoots (rather than pulling over on the side of the road). Find it at 2820 County Road 414, Spicewood.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center , Austin No Central Texas bluebonnet pilgrimage is complete without a visit to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, roughly 12 miles southwest of downtown Austin. Open for entry daily, 9 am-4 pm ( reservations are encouraged), the center has 284 acres of scenic gardens and trails, including native gardens, wild meadows, and experts who can tell you what you’re looking at. They also have a gift shop and gallery, a cafe, host special events, and offer various resources on plants and flowers around Texas. They offer a wildflower report and ideas for bluebonnet excursions here . Find it at 4801 La Crosse Ave., Austin.

Southeast Texas Between Austin and Houston, wildflowers are already starting to go to seed in late March, so you'll have to get there fast to still catch some blue beauties. Here are some recommendations:

Brenham/Chappell Hill/Industry, Washington County Brenham is a town that prides itself on its wildflowers (and on being the home of Blue Bell Ice Cream). A March 27 post on the Visit Brenham website warns, "Bluebonnets are at peak all throughout the county! We've had lots of rain lately so weeds are going to start shooting up faster than the flowers. If you haven't made your way to Brenham & Washington County, now's the time!" Using "Flower Watch," visitors can check in almost daily on the Visit Brenham website to see what is blooming; there's even a handy driving map .

Washington County as a whole thrives with bluebonnets. Prime viewing spots typically are along Highway 290 east and west as you drive into Brenham; FM 1155 to 2679 in Chappell Hill; and FM 2447 and Highway 290 at First Baptist Church of Chappell Hill (the church typically welcomes visitors, but requests that the parking lot remain open to members of its congregation).

Chappell Hill hosts the “Official State of Texas Bluebonnet Festival” on April 13-14 in downtown historic Chappell Hill. Although it might happen past prime wildflower time, it still is expected to attract thousands to the area.

Industry-Fayetteville One of the most iconic photo spots in Texas has both bluebonnets and zebras - yes, zebras. About 80 miles east of Austin and 90 miles from Houston is a field where zebras roam, along with cows. Occasionally, they'll graze among the bluebonnets and up to the fence line, photographers say. The address is 5411 TX-159, Fayetteville (between Industry and Fayetteville).

Resources to keep up with wildflower season

  • Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center regularly updates information about the season on their website and social media   channels . Here is a handy chart of some common Texas native plants and when they bloom.
  • Texas Bluebonnets and Wildflowers and Bluebonnets of Texas are Facebook groups in which members regularly post updates about what they're seeing around the state.
  • Texas Wildflower Report is a Facebook page that posts helpful update and the author has even published an ebook called Hunting Texas Wildflowers 2024, available on Kindle for $9.99.
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife Department 's Flickr page and social media accounts usually get populated with wildflower sightings from state parks and wildlife management areas.
  • The iNaturalist app will allow you to see what’s in bloom in different regions.
  • Search Instagram using #txwildflowers2024 to find pretty photos and updates from all around the state.

Rules of the road

  • Pulling over on the side of a highway for photos is never recommended. Find a nearby parking lot. For everyone's safety, do not pose for photos near a roadway, and never on a median.
  • Remember that while it isn’t illegal to pick the blooms, it is bad form. Leave them for others to enjoy and so the flowers can go to seed and make more for next year.
  • By the same token, minimize trampling of the plants, as crushing them repeatedly (by, say, sitting on them) can destroy the flowers. Try to walk in other people's footprints in a field.
  • Be aware that fields can also contain fire ants and the occasional snake. Be careful if walking through grass where it’s not possible to see where you’re stepping.
  • Also, remember the "groups" rule. If you approach a pretty patch and another family is taking photos, ride on by.
  • Finally, be respectful of private property — no climbing fences, going through gates, or driving up driveways to get that photo. You might get a less-than-warm welcome.

Animal news, east texas dog trainer united k9 academy charged with animal cruelty.

The owner of a dog training facility in Hunt County, Texas has been arrested for animal cruelty: Craig Hanna, owner of United K9 Academy in Caddo Mills, has been charged with cruelty to animals, following an investigation by the SPCA of Texas Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit.

According to a release, the investigation, which began in July 2023, determined that Hanna violated Texas Penal Code 42.092 – Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals, a Class A Misdemeanor, for intentionally and knowingly neglecting two dogs while they were in his care, custody, and control.

The SPCA of Texas and Hunt County Sheriff’s Office filed criminal charges and on April 1, an arrest warrant was issued for Hanna by the Hunt County Attorney’s Office.

On April 3, Hunt County Sheriff’s Office took Hanna into custody, and he was booked into the Hunt County Jail. His criminal trial is yet to be scheduled.

On July 31, 2023, the SPCA of Texas ACI Unit received a complaint from a pet owner that had boarded his dogs to be trained by Hanna at his home in Caddo Mills, Texas for 14 days.

When the owner arrived to claim his dogs, he noticed that they were lethargic, covered in urine, and one of the dogs had trouble standing.

He rushed the dogs to an emergency vet where they were treated for severe dehydration and malnutrition. One of the dogs, a mixed breed named Duke, was in critical condition and had to be hospitalized. Duke's medical examination showed that he lost 13 pounds in 17 days, 14 of which were in the care of Hanna, owner of United K9 Academy.

Fortunately, both dogs survived the ordeal.

“We're happy to report that Duke was able to pull through, make a full recovery and is back to being spoiled by his family,” said SPCA of Texas Chief Investigator, Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit Courtney Burns, CAWA. “We strongly advise pet owners to do their research when choosing a trainer or boarding their pets. A reputable business should be able to provide references and allow you to tour the facility.”

Founded in 1938, the SPCA of Texas is a 501c3 non-profit animal welfare organization that maintains a team of animal cruelty investigators who rescue hundreds of animals from cruelty each year in North Texas counties.
