Travel trailer repairs are part and parcel of the RV lifestyle. You can’t have one without the other. Maintenance and preventative maintenance are just a part of life on the road. In this article, I will share some of what I’ve learned about how to avoid some of the most common travel trailer repairs.

Some things stand out more than others, and RVers are understandably agitated with manufacturers in recent years, thanks to the expanding number of repairs. Hopefully, what’s become common in the last few years, is not a reflection of the long-term.

In the meantime, it’s a good idea to compile a preventative maintenance list, which accomplishes two things. First, it helps to tackle issues before they become serious problems. Second, it trains your eye to see potential issues before they arise.

Why Do Travel Trailers Have So Many Issues?

While there’s always a degree of quality control issues (RVs are moving homes, complicated in many ways), COVID put the situation front and center, arguably making it worse. It’s a matter of quantity over quality. Anyone working in the manufacturing industry will tell you that an emphasis on quantity only makes things worse.

While we were touring and creating RV reviews over the past five years, we certainly noticed a huge decline in the quality of travel trailers during the pandemic. It was during this time that the phrase “Covid Coach” was born.

The demand for RVs throughout the pandemic drove production through the roof, with many hands and skill sets involved in the assembly line. There’s also the lack of universal components, with many parts coming from different brands, with different quality control standards and protocols.

Combine all of that with a travel trailer that faces a future of getting beat to death over potholes, side roads, curbs, etc., and you have a recipe for repair issues. In most cases, extensive use is as bad as no use. A travel trailer that sits for a long time is susceptible to problems as well.

Last but not least, new RVers have absolutely no clue what they’re looking at. We’ve all been there. Owning a new travel trailer does not automatically convey travel trailer expertise. We learn as we go, and it’s hard to know every little thing to look for with no experience at all.

As time goes on, that preventative maintenance list grows and things fall into a sort of rhythm, especially if you’re proactive about staying on top of things. In the meantime, here is a list of the most common travel trailer repairs. If you’re a first-time travel trailer owner, make good use of it.

What Are The Most Common Travel Trailer Repairs?

Keep in mind that the most common travel trailer repairs are not necessarily the same as the things we encounter during the shake-down stage. The following list is an overall picture of the regular, ins-and-outs of repairs that all RV owners deal with at some point or another.

1. Tire Blowouts

No travel trailer repairs list is complete without listing tire blowouts, something that’s common on anything that sits on the ground with wheels. While travel trailer tire blowouts are common, they are definitely scarier than a blowout on your car, especially if it’s a sizable, heavy travel trailer, and you’re traveling at a high rate of speed.

A big part of preventative maintenance is knowing what to expect and understanding causation. As it happens, there are several things that can potentially cause a tire blowout.

Tires become too hot
The travel trailer is overloaded
Axle alignment issues
Low or high tire pressure
Sidewall cracking goes unaddressed
Wrong tire size
Low tread on an old tire

2. A/C Not Cold

Travel trailer repairs aren’t all that different from your average home and auto repairs. Everything is a little smaller and a little closer at hand, however, which makes maintenance and repairs a little easier in some cases. The A/C not blowing cold is a common, if extremely frustrating, repair in travel trailers and RVs in general.

Newbie RVers are probably just discovering the dynamics of parking on asphalt, directly in the sun, and something actually being wrong with the A/C. Much of the time, it’s less about the A/C and more about the outside heat and how you’re handling it.

Check your windows and roof vents to see if you feel a lot of outside heat coming through
Make sure your RV is parked in a shady spot and not directly in the sun
Check your A/C filter and clean it if necessary
Check the A/C coils and fins and clean them if necessary

The A/C unit is one of the most important appliances on your RV but, for some reason, RVers seem to neglect it more than anything else. It’s a pain in the neck to service one, but it’s more than worth the effort.

3. Roof Leaks

Inclement weather, heat, cold, and the strains of the road create very common issues with the roof. You have a variety of things mounted to the roof and, wherever something is mounted, or a vent fan sits, is also a weak spot.

One of the worst things about a roof leak is the residual damage that comes after, especially if it rains. Roof leaks can also develop into one of the most damaging travel trailer repairs on the list.

Faulty sealant around roof structures
Damage from accidents (on the road or caught in extreme storms)

There are vent fans, skylights, solar panels, A/C units, antennas, cables passing through the roof, fans, and basically, an entirely distinct, topographic network of stuff, all of which need a reason to penetrate your travel trailer roof.

If they could come up with a vibrating massage chair that can be mounted to an RV roof, they would probably do it.

All of these ingress and egress points weaken the structure and all of them, individually, are a weak point in the rooftop. This is a formula for one of the more insidious roof issues—the slow leak.

It’s the one you don’t see. Meanwhile, it’s creating mold and mildew. Staying on top of your RV roof (not literally) is all about preventative maintenance, once again.

Conduct routine inspections of your RV’s roof
Look for cracked Dicor patching
Keep an eye out for UV damage and physical damage along and around everything mounted on your travel trailer’s roof
Bubbles, blisters, and cracking
Check over all Dicor and other sealants twice per year (at the very minimum)

4. Furnace Problems

Furnace problems are right behind the A/C as one of the more irritating travel trailer repairs, especially if you’re in places like Alaska or northern Minnesota from January to February. The difficulty with furnaces is that the underlying issue is nebulous. However, there are key troubleshooting identifiers to help you lock it down.

Those are just some of the more common problems . There are more parts that a furnace relies on than meets the eye. One of the most helpful things you can do is look up your furnace and learn everything you can about its functionality. Though some of the jargon above sounds difficult, most of them are surprisingly simple fixes.

5. Wheel Bearing Replacement

Of the travel trailer repairs on this list, failing wheel bearings are the loudest. Wheel bearings are greased and when the grease wears off, metal-on-metal friction takes its place. The general rule of thumb is to replace them every 12,000 miles.

Of course, almost no one does that. However, stick to 12,000 miles, and you won’t have to worry about that awful squealing sound and the eyes of the entire campground squarely on you as you back your travel trailer in. Now, you can clean and grease your wheel bearings, or you can replace them.

The former is the most labor-intensive, believe it or not. Knowing that the choice is entirely up to you.

6. No Battery Power

Unless your batteries are ancient and you’re just ignoring them, this is something that rarely has to do with the batteries . As travel trailer repairs go, this is often the simplest to fix, because it is most likely your circuit breakers.

All it takes is cranking up the microwave and inching over that 30-amp limit without realizing it. In the vast majority of battery issue cases, the rig’s breakers are tripped, and it’s the first thing you should check.

If the breakers look fine, check the battery disconnect switch. Make sure that you’re not over-addressing the problem as well. For instance, you might have a faulty GFCI outlet and are attributing it to the battery. Last but not least, check over all of the visible wiring, looking for corrosion or obvious damage.

7. Shower Not Draining

You’re as liable to run into this in your home as you are in an RV because it’s so common in both. This is either one of the cleanest or dirtiest of travel trailer repairs, depending on how far you have to go. If you have long hair, well, get the gloves ready.

Start troubleshooting at the drain and work your way to the gray water tank. That is, unless the gray water tank is full. In that case, you know what you have to do. Avoid using powerful chemical cleaners in your RV, as the pipes aren’t as resilient as their household counterparts.

Dump a box of baking soda in the drain and follow it up with vinegar. Don’t mix the two first, unless you want to throw a bubbling, hissing, mess of a party in your RV bathroom. If you have to pull hair out, there’s nothing for it but to get down there and start yanking.

I find that removing the drain cover helps before you start removing the hair clog. And sometimes I take a wire hangar and cut it. Then I bend the end to make a small hook which helps to grab any hair further down the drain. Once you’re done, a few hits with the plunger should finish it off.

8. Toilet Doesn’t Hold Water

Another of the dirty travel trailer repairs you’re likely to come across is a toilet that refuses to hold water. Not so bad when going number one. Number two is problematic at best. This type of RV toilet has to have running water and a stable water level to function properly. There are a few reasons a toilet won’t do its job and hold water.

Water pressure is low
The flange is damaged and needs replacing
The gasket is worn out and needs replacing
Busted valve
Clogged drain line
The fill tube is broken (in which case, your bathroom is now a water park)
Built-up limescale compromises the seals

There are others on the above list that may turn your bathroom floor into a slip-n-slide, depending on where the water diverts. As long as your water is on, it has to go somewhere and gravity doesn’t always function at our convenience.

Fortunately, most of these are visible fixes, and, even if you have to remove the toilet, it’s not the most difficult job (if a bit unclean).

9. Awning Alignment

If you keep up with travel trailer repairs in the news, you probably know that awnings are the source of thousands upon thousands of recalls in recent years. Fortunately, awning alignment issues aren’t usually the core issue of these recalls. In fact, it’s something you can generally fix yourself with a ladder and a screwdriver.

What you want to do is locate the attachment points of the awning (Usually the drip rail or gutter), and loosen the screw enough to shift the fabric so it aligns when it rolls up and extends. You can sit there and open and shut the awning as much as you need to, making incremental adjustments until it feeds into the roll correctly.

10. Water Heater Issues

Like so many of the travel trailer repairs on this list, we can write entire articles on fixing some of these things. The water heater is one of them. Here are some common problems with RV water heaters and some troubleshooting tips.

The water heater breaker is tripped
The Campground breaker panel is off
Faulty heating element
Insufficient power or fuel
Exhaust blockage
The water supply is insufficient

The first two are pretty self-explanatory and easy to check. The faulty heating element is a simple one as well. All you need is a multimeter set to ohms (electric-only water heaters). Place your leads on the heating element and you should get a reading of 9.6 to 10 ohms.

For gas, always check your valves first and, of course, make sure your tanks are topped off. Exhaust blockage doesn’t even need anything solid to block it. All it takes is a strong wind and it can’t function properly. The only thing you can do in this scenario is shift the travel trailer to remove the exhaust from direct wind impact.

Routinely check and/or clean your filter screen and properly winterize your water heater every year. Make sure your water valves are all open and you’re not flushing the toilet too much while the tank is heating up for the first time.

What Travel Trailer Repairs Are Covered By Warranty?

First and foremost, if you break something or completely ignore an existing issue, taking advantage of the warranty just went out the window while traveling at high speed.

Besides that, warranties are tricky business and the small print really matters—a lot. Most of your common travel trailer repairs are covered, but there are always exceptions to keep an eye out for.

Also, if you think you can neglect insurance while warranty coverage is still average, that would be a resounding no. You still need to do your due diligence and cover the value of your asset with insurance.

You’ll get the most out of your warranty if you practice proper, routine preventative maintenance and insurance will take care of the things you can’t control.

Warranties cover most RV components in terms of workmanship and faults. In general, these include the aforementioned awnings, leveling jacks, engine and transmission (powertrain), steps, generators, water heaters, and water pumps.

It’s hard to get more specific than that, as subtle differences are common across a variety of brands.

Your Guide to RV Awning Maintenance, Repairs, or Replacement

Retractable awnings are popular standard equipment on the majority of RVs. They come in many styles, colors, and lengths depending on RV model. Some larger rigs even have two or more awnings. This article covers everything you need to know for RV awning maintenance, repairs, or replacement. We also discuss everything from choosing the right cleaning products to DIY repairs and replacing the awning fabric yourself.

But first, let’s review the basics about RV awnings. The two most common types of RV awnings on rigs today are:

Side-frame awnings, with vertical frame supports mounted down the side of the RV.
The other type are lateral “floating” arm awnings with less frame structure. They utilize horizontal awning support arms mounted only near the top of the RV.

RV awnings are either manually extended and retracted using a strap or pole, or electrically operated at the push of a button (activated by a motor at one end of the awning roller tube). There is debate as to which frame and operating style is better. But, we won’t open that RVing can-of-worms here!

RVers love their awnings for several reasons:

RV awnings provide comfort and shade from the hot summer sun.
They can provide some protection from light rain.
Awnings maximize your outdoor campsite area, providing another defined living space for relaxing and entertaining.
RV awnings are handy for stringing patio lights , as well as creating “down-lighting” from permanently affixed LED awning lights.

Regardless of RV awning type or size, and how you use it, they all have something in common…the need for regular maintenance, repairs, and eventually, replacement. Let’s take a look at each of these aspects.

Maintenance and Cleaning for RV Awnings

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” That old saying also applies to your RV awning. To extend the life of your awning, and keep it looking good, regular maintenance and cleaning is necessary.

Easy Maintenance Steps You Can Do

Fortunately, there is not a lot involved with day-to-day maintenance of RV awnings and frames. Simple tools like an allen wrench, socket set, and proper screwdrivers are all that you need. A good silicone dry-lube spray is also recommended.

Inspect all of the bolts, screws and other fasteners that hold your awning together and attached to your RV. Do this periodically, tightening them as needed. As your RV rolls down the highway, absorbing every bump, crack, and pothole, things can loosen up over time.
Adjust your RV awning properly. Many awnings have adjustment screws and bolts that allow you to set preferred angles for more or less shade. They can also be used to tilt one side of the awning down to better shed rainwater.

👉 Tip: Angle your awning toward the back of your RV so that rain water and AC unit condensation is directed back and away from your camper patio and doorway. This can also prevent your awning from collapsing under the weight of pooled rainwater during a storm.

Lubricate all moving parts of the RV awning frame. Use a silicone-based dry lubricant on all hinges, pins, knuckle joints, and struts of your awning frame. You’ll want to use the dry lubricant rather than a wet lubricant since the awning frame is exposed to dust and grime as you travel down the road.

Keeping your RV awning fabric clean and mildew-resistant is very important. The better you keep the fabric clean and dry, the longer it will last. And it will look nicer, too!

View any online RVing forum or Facebook group and you are bound to see a zillion opinions on what works best to clean RV awnings. We don’t have room to list them all here, but we do have a few general care and cleaning tips to recommend:

Avoid rolling in your awning when it is wet to prevent mold and mildew stains. If you must roll it up wet, at the next opportunity, extend the awning to let it dry before re-rolling it.
Avoid using bleach or bleach-based cleaning products . Sure, it cleans well. But, bleach is very strong and can cause premature deterioration of awning materials, especially seam stitching.
Rinse thoroughly with a gentle hose stream, especially if you use stronger cleaning products. Then, let your awning dry to remove all moisture before retracting it.
Use a long-handled soft brush to scrub dirt . Make sure to wear eye protection while looking up and scrubbing the awning. Scrub both the top and underside of the awning.
Mild soap or dish soap and water – Most gentle for awning fabric.
White vinegar and water mixture – Equal parts of each.
Magic Eraser
LA’s Totally Awesome Cleaner – Dilute with warm water and rinse well.
B.E.S.T. Awning Cleaner – Also contains a UV protectant.
Specific RV awning cleaners by CAMCO, Thetford, Dicor, and other name brand manufacturers.

Easy DIY RV Awning Repairs to Save You Time & Money

Unfortunately, your RV awning fabric can be damaged all too easily. As tough as the material is, it’s no match for a sharp branch plummeting down from the trees above. The fabric can also wear thin in spots or tear. Seam stitching can deteriorate after years of exposure to high humidity, high temperature summer sun, and harsh weather elements.

With a little DIY effort, you can often easily repair your awning, putting off the expense and hassle of replacement. A commonly used item for small to medium sized holes and tears is repair tape. There are many different tape products suitable for RV awning repairs:

What you choose to use for your awning repair depends on the nature of the damage and what is available where you are.

An important first step is cleaning the repair area well to ensure good adhesion of the tape or patch. We recommend placing the patch both on top and on the bottom of the damaged area.

You’ll want to rub the repair patch firmly on both sides to create a strong bond. If the repair is on an edge of the awning, fold the tape or patch over the edge to help it stay secure longer.

👉 Tip: Make sure your tape or patch doesn’t have square corners. Cut the corners in a radius for better long-term adhesion. Square corners have a tendency to more easily lift up and peel, shortening the life of your RV awning repair.

Replacing RV Awning Fabric – Yes, You Can Do It!

We hate to think about it, I know, but sometimes the only thing to do is replace your RV awning fabric. Either a catastrophic event destroys it, or it has simply worn out over its useful life. In these cases, repair isn’t feasible. It’s time to replace.

Ordering DIY Replacement Awning Fabric

Fortunately, you have the option of purchasing new awning fabric custom fitted to your RV. We’ve replaced our rig’s awning fabric and, with helpers, it’s not too hard of a DIY project.

Along with your original RV awning manufacturer, three good sources of RV awning replacement fabric include: Carefree of Colorado, ShadePro, and Tough Top Awnings. Each has an informative website and with easy online and phone ordering.

Ideally, you should order awning fabric that is heavy duty and offers the best UV protection that your budget allows. Pricing varies…a lot. So, be sure to shop around.

👉 Tip : Ordering your awning fabric online may seem easiest. But, we recommend also calling the company to make absolutely sure you are ordering the correct style and dimensions for your specific RV application. It’s quite the fiasco to receive new awning fabric and happily begin installing it, only to discover it is the wrong size or style!

Installing Your Replacement Awning Fabric

Given the variety of RV awning types and roller tube configurations, we can’t give you specific instructions. You should refer to your awning owner’s manual to get the manufacturer’s guidelines on fabric replacement procedures. And, of course, there are YouTube videos that can show you the steps for your RV’s make and model of awning. Reaching out to fellow RVers in forums and groups can also provide helpful tips.

However, to give you a general idea of the RV awning fabric replacement process, the steps are usually similar to these:

You’ll gather a team. Having two to four helpers will make the job go much easier. Trust me on this! A step ladder, or two, is also needed.
Release tension on the awning fabric, frame, and roller tube (some are spring-loaded).
After removing set-screws that hold the awning edges in the channels at the top of the RV and in the roller tube, you and your helpers will slide the old awning fabric out of the channels (usually toward the front of the RV).
Spray a silicone lubricant down each awning channel.
You and your helpers will slide the new awning fabric into the upper and lower channels. Position it properly and secure it in the channels.
Restore tension to the fabric, frame, and roller tube.
Test for proper RV awning operation. Adjust fabric positioning as needed.

With helpers, the whole awning fabric replacement job can be done in a couple of hours. As a DIY project, you can save money and possible loss of use of your RV if you otherwise needed to leave it at a shop.

I have seen many owner reviews of Grand Design campers who rave about the quality of these units and the outstanding customer service. For me, a list of the best travel trailer brands would not be complete without Grand Design.

The company is located in Middlebury, IN. All their towables and fifth wheels come with a 3-year limited structural warranty. Imagine XLS is one of my favorites due to its excellent styling, features, and amenities. Grand Design has only been around since 2001 and today it operates as an independent business within Winnebago Industries. This line of campers is definitely on our short list of the best travel trailer brands in 2023.

Why I Recommend the Grand Design Imagine

The Imagine travel trailer line is my preferred bumper-pull from this RV manufacturer. There are several reasons I like the Imagine trailer. First off, it comes in 21 different floor plans. Even the smallest model comes with a queen-sized bed. There is no way I would want a travel trailer with anything smaller than a queen bed.

The Oliver Legacy Elite 2 pictured above is my favorite model and probably one of their top-rated all-fiberglass campers. I like the Elite 2 for several reasons. I like that it has a dry weight of just 4,600 pounds. It can be towed with a good truck or full-size SUV. Keep in mind that 4,600 pounds is just the dry weight. For towing, you need to consider cargo weight too.

The Legacy Elite 2 comes in two-floor plans. One with twin beds and the with a dinette to 75″ x 79″ bed conversion. This model is loaded with standard features.

One thing to keep in mind with the Happier Camper is that it does not have a typical toilet setup. The Happier Camper has a “ Dry Flush” toilet for RVs . That is the only drawback I see to this camper trailer. Remember, it is small, so don’t expect much room, but that is how it’s been designed. It’s modern, and makes exceptional use of the small interior.

Another of our picks with a long history in the RV industry, Starcraft, started making metal farm equipment in 1903. In 1968 they began manufacturing campers. Today, what sets Starcraft apart from other small, affordable trailers is its smart construction. This was a spacious camper available in 11-floor plans, including several travel trailer models with bunk beds . The Mossy Oak came in lengths from 23’4″ to 36’5″, making it the best predecessor of the Starcraft Autumn Ridge. This new model has many choices for RV buyers, with features that will make you want to own one too.

Definitely one of the better RV brands in the industry, the designs are extremely practical and well done. Lance Campers are built with top-grade materials such as Dual Layer Azdel composite composite panels, an eco-friendly, toxin-free composite panel superior to wood.. These trailer are also built with a one-piece Energy Star Rated Synthetic Membrane Roof.

Definitely one of the best travel trailers in 2023 (and for many years prior), Lance Camper models are renowned for their quality construction and thoughtful design. Crafted with lightweight yet robust aluminum-framed bodies, and insulated, laminated walls, Lance Camper trailers are designed to endure the elements. Their sturdy construction make them easy to tow with a variety of vehicles, from mid-sized SUVs to full-sized trucks.

Lance is confident about their RVs. In addition to the 1-year limited warranty on every trailer or truck camper they make, the company also offers a 2-year structural warranty on all models. Overall I consider Lance one of the Top 5 best travel trailer brands in the industry.

What I Like About The Lance Camper 1685

Of the 12 models of travel trailers Lance Campers makes in 2023, I like the 1685 model est. There are several reasons. The 1685 is one of their lightest travel trailer models, featuring a dry weight of just 4,690 pounds. The interior is roomy and has lots of storage space available, and the floor plan is intelligently designed and laid out for maximum space efficiency. It includes a wet bath which I have stated before, is one of my personal preferences in any RV we buy.

Of all the travel trailer models Jayco manufactures, I prefer the Jay Flight SLX. First off, it’s not a huge camper and very light for its size. It seems for the money and especially the reliability and durability the Oliver 23.5 ft is hands down the better choice, although the Airstream Serentity at 30 ft is a close competitor. Between the two the Airstream is longer but a lot more expensive. Probably comes down to money and preference

One of the joys of vacationing in a recreational vehicle is saving big money on the cost of lodging, but that’s partially offset by how much fuel they guzzle. Starting next year, however, RV enthusiasts will have a choice that greatly improves how far they can travel on a tank of gas, while also giving them the option of cruising without using any.

Leading RV manufacturer THOR Industries and electric vehicle company Harbinger took the wraps off the world’s first hybrid class A RV on Monday. Class A RVs look like buses and are built on commercial truck or bus chassis.

Harbinger builds chassis for electric commercial vehicles, and collaborated with THOR to create a plug-in hybrid electric chassis tailored to RVs. The companies describe it as a series hybrid with a range extender, providing much better fuel economy than the normal six-to-eight miles a gallon for an RV running solely on fuel.

The hybrid chassis is powered by a 140-kWh battery pack, a low-emissions gasoline range extender that recharges the battery, and solar rooftop.

“In a series hybrid, you basically have an electric vehicle, and you've got a generator in the trunk, and you can turn that generator on and charge the vehicle, but it's very much an EV plus sort of an auxiliary system,” explained Harbinger co-founder and CEO John Harris in an interview.

“That is what gets us from 150 miles in EV only -mode up to an estimated 500 miles when you got the range extender. It's basically a generator that's filling the batteries all the time while you're driving,” added McKay Featherson, THOR senior vice president, global innovation in an interview.

A series hybrid differs from parallel hybrid powertrains found in vehicles like the Toyota Prius in which the EV and internal combustion drivetrains run in parallel to provide maximum power when needed such as when passing another vehicle, Harris explained.

A series hybrid system is more suitable for an RV, he maintained, saying “when you think about common platforms and modularity, it makes a lot more sense. It's also a lot simpler, because that engine isn't in a way that's driving the wheels. You've got the full performance of the vehicle, whether that engine is on or off. When you think about Thor's use case, it really starts to make a lot of sense, because, you know, you've got a class A RV, you've probably got an auxiliary generator, you probably have applications where you need short power. So basically saying,well, the RVs got a generator anyway why don't we make it part of the underlying platform?”

That doesn’t mean there weren’t challenges in creating a hybrid chassis that would be compatible with the particular structure and components in an RV.

“Usually there's the water tanks are underneath the floor. When I got batteries, where do you put everything? So complete repackaging of where everything goes underneath the floor, redesign of the system, call it overall, is a challenge with the vehicle we've built. We think we've found solutions to all of those challenges,” said Featherstone.

On the other hand, Harris says from Harbinger’s standpoint, working with an RV created some advantages, including what he termed a “box section” under the floor where water tanks and auxiliary systems are located, creating a space for the range extended while maintain better ground clearance.

Harbinger and THOR had already established a relationship before this project. In September, 2023, Harbinger announced $60 million in Series A funding led by THOR, which was joined by several other companies.

Just this past May, Harbinger said THOR and other customers accounted for 4,000 new binding vehicle pre-orders.

The new hybrid RV on which both companies combined will be available some time in 2025, according to Featherstone, and will likely be marketed under some of the brands in the THOR family, which include Airstream, Jayco, Tiffin and Thor Motorcoach.
