We love rafting. Point blank. Given that Ricky was a white water rafting guide and safety kayaker on Costa Rica’s Pacuare River for more than six years, you can imagine how much of a passion we have developed for the activity (don’t miss the photos of some of our most extreme white water rafting trips in Costa Rica provided in our related blog post White Water Rafting Costa Rica: Go Big Or Go Home , or our description of the Costa Rica rafting community we are proud to be a part of in our related blog post The Pacuare River Family ). You can also imagine how impossible it would be for us to identify one Costa Rica river over others without imposing our own bias when we respond to questions such as “Which is the best river for rafting in Costa Rica?” However, personal bias aside, it is important to note that our love for the Pacuare River exceeds our personal experience. It is rooted in fact; specifically, the fact that the river’s rapids are some of the best in the country, the fact that the trip includes complimentary transportation between popular areas such as San Jose, La Fortuna/Arenal, and Puerto Viejo, and the fact that National Geographic once identified the river as one of the best in the world for river scenery (learn more about the Pacuare River experience in our related blog post The Pacuare River Rafting Tour ). But, all accomplishments and accolades aside, here’s the truth: as appealing as the Pacuare River is, if a run down this particular river does not fit with your trip itinerary, your desired river/rapid level, your children’s ages, or your vacation budget, there are many other worthwhile river trips in Costa Rica to choose from.

In our blog post Where To Go In Costa Rica: Determining The Best Places To Visit During Your Trip we explain that the only person who can decide which Costa Rican destinations are the “best” to visit is the person doing the visiting. Similarly, in our posts When Is The Best Time Of Year To Travel To Costa Rica? , Best Ziplines In Costa Rica: Comparing 6 In Arenal And Monteverde , Best Hanging Bridges In Costa Rica: Comparing 4 In Arenal And Monteverde , The Best Costa Rica Volcanoes: What To Know About Arenal, Irazu, Poas, Rincon De La Vieja, And Turrialba , and Best Hot Springs In Arenal: We Compare All 12 La Fortuna Hot Springs , we argue that it is up to travellers to decide for themselves when they should travel to Costa Rica and which tours they would enjoy the most. In each case, although we aim to provide travellers with as many details as possible so they can make informed decisions regarding their trip, we are hesitant to pinpoint the “best” of anything, as doing so would only overshadow our clients’ unique interests, desires, and needs with our own opinions.

So, in true Costa Rica Travel Blog  style, below is a list of some of the most popular rivers for rafting in Costa Rica that visitors can choose from. The list includes both rivers for white water rafting and flat rivers where safari float tours (slow-moving rafting tours) are run.

Excellent and informative post! Thanks for all the details!

Awesome ! I rafted the Rio Toro around 5 years ago now with a bunch of girlfriends and we had an absolute blast. Our guide was incredible. The fact that I ended up in the water twice made it even more fun ! A hilariously good time ! A definite highlight of my trip to Costa Rica !

fotogfoodie – Thanks so much for the comment! We LOVE your blog – it makes us want to cook, eat, dine out, dine in, and take up photography all in one. Not to mention… add apples to our french toast ASAP! 😉 Pura vida!

A tale or two to tell….. – That sounds like so much fun (travelling with a group of friends and keeping the great rafting experience as a memory of it!)! The guides in Costa Rica are… you said it… incredible. The majority truly love their jobs and love making travellers smile. Most Ticos (Costa Ricans) are proud of where they come from, and guiding is one way they can share the love they have for their country with others. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us! 🙂 Pura vida!

Gracias! It really means a lot to me that people enjoy the stuff I post. Helps keep me motivated. I love your blog as well, gives the travel exactly the information they need!

fotogfoodie – We truly do! We visited your blog again today and love the free eBook hook-up. We are a travel-themed blog, however everyone has to eat, so we don’t mind linking back to your post! http://fotogfoodie.wordpress.com/2013/01/18/5-ingredients-in-10-minutes-free-ebook/ original source: http://thestonesoup.com/blog/# Pura vida!

10 Best Costa Rica White Water Rafting Tours

best river tours in costa rica

Home » Things to do » 10 Best Costa Rica White Water Rafting Tours

Between the year-round warm water and the natural beauty the country has to offer, a trip to Costa Rica presents the opportunity for world-class rafting in a tropical paradise. Costa Rica has 14 major river systems that begin in the volcanic mountain ranges and flow out towards the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the San Juan River, or Lake Nicaragua — with plenty of waterfalls along the way. These rivers produce world-famous white-water rapids, as well as beautiful scenery along the banks.

We have a wide range of options when it comes to rafting adventures, with both single-day tours and multi-day white water excursions available, and river difficulties varying from the calm stroll of Class I rivers to the extreme thrill of Class V rivers. So, whether you’d like to take an easy float down the river to spot wildlife with the whole family, or you’re interested in challenging yourself on adrenaline-packed rapids with nicknames such as “La Boca del Diablo,” there’s a whitewater rafting trip for you.

Rafting Day Trips:

Want to spend time out riding the rapids, but not quite ready to give up several days of your vacation? Relax on a safari float or gear up for rumbling along some of the most challenging rapids in the world, all within the span of a few hours – and there are plenty of options!

Safari Float on Penas Blancas River: Class I

10 TOP COSTA RICA WHITE WATER RAFTING TOURS

Enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest on this peaceful Penas Blancas River Cruise at Arenal . Be prepared to catch glimpses of Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth, the brown-throated sloth, the gray four-eyed opossum, the yellow-crowned night-heron, the spectacled owl, the long-nosed bat, the mantled howler monkey, and the ironically named American crocodile.

Safari Float on Corobici River: Class I-II

This easy float is perfect for bringing the kids along, and elderly vacationers are sure to enjoy the relaxing ride down the river as well. The banks of the Corobici River in Guanacaste are home to plenty of exotic wildlife, and the birdwatching in this location is among Costa Rica’s best. It’s truly a surreal experience being guided gently down the stream, watching the untouched landscape and its inhabitants as you pass by.

White Water Rafting Rio Balsa: Class II- III

In close proximity to Arenal Volcano , Rio Balsa is a great excursion for the whole family. Get ready for a healthy mix of both exciting white water action and scenic floats that wind their way through dense Costa Rican forests.

White Water Rafting Savegre River: Class II-III

The Savegre River, found near  Manuel Antonio , is one of the cleanest in all of Central America. This 6-7 hour trip down the river is fun rapid rafting for the whole family –– it features a mix of both calm and exciting stretches, and guests will have plenty of time to get out of their rafts to swim in between the maneuvering of rapids with names like “The Washing Machine,” “Boca Diablo,” and “Screaming Child.” And don’t worry, that last one refers to screams of excitement, not fear!

White Water Rafting Pacuare River: Class III-IV

10 TOP COSTA RICA WHITE WATER RAFTING TOURS

One of the top-rated rivers in the world for rafting, the Pacuare River offers beautiful views and crazy rapids to traverse. The river runs alongside the Talamanca Mountain Range, home to a vast array of exotic wildlife including monkeys, toucans, parrots, jaguars, deer, butterflies, and ocelots! Due to the intensity of the rapids, age requirements for this trip are 12 years old during the dry season (December through May) and 14 years old during the rainy season (June through November).

White Water Rafting Tenorio River: Class III-IV

For those looking for a thrill, the 8 mile trip down the Upper Tenorio River in Guanacaste provides just that. This day trip is more of an intense challenge with its quick turns, twists, and one 12-foot, Class V drop that will exhilarate even the most seasoned thrill-seekers! Because of the difficulty of this day trip, the minimum age is 14.

White Water Rafting Naranjo River: Class III-IV

10 TOP COSTA RICA WHITE WATER RAFTING TOURS

Naranjo River White Water Rafting

There are two separate day trips available on the Naranjo River near Manuel Antonio . The first is a family-friendly trip, Class III-IV, that features an exhilarating stretch on the river’s rapids before opening up onto the Pacific flatlands where everyone can experience a more relaxing journey while scoping for the abundant birdlife of the region –– the ringed kingfisher and the white ibis, to name a few.

White Water Rafting Naranjo River: Class IV+

The other Class IV+ option for traversing the Naranjo River is geared more towards thrill-seekers and has a minimum age requirement of 12 years — this is the El Chorro section of Naranjo. El Chorro is an advanced run that features 9 technical narrows and a tight squeeze through canyon walls jutting up on either side of the raft.

Rafting Overnight Trips:

A multi-day rafting trip is a wonderful opportunity to explore Costa Rica from the water! Besides containing some of the best whitewater rivers in the world, the countryside is beautiful beyond description. Many of the rivers run through national parks or reserves, guaranteeing breathtaking views and countless chances to spot the more elusive wildlife creatures. The  Pacuare River is a beautiful overnight rafting destination for the active traveler to consider, so come on out and get your adrenaline pumping on any of our multi-day trips!

Pacuare River Rafting: 1 Night/2 Days

10 TOP COSTA RICA WHITE WATER RAFTING TOURS

This multi-day trip will first take you on a Class III whitewater rapid ride through the Pacuare Gorge with an occasion to stop for a snack and swim underneath a gorgeous waterfall before arriving at your Pacuare River Lodge . The second day is filled with continued rafting down the Lower Pacuare, this time through Class IV rapids. Again, there will be time to rest, experience waterfalls, and slide down natural waterslides that you won’t soon forget.

Pacuare River Rafting: 2 Nights/3 Days

10 TOP COSTA RICA WHITE WATER RAFTING TOURS

The 3-day Pacuare River rafting adventure is an amazing way to get the most out of your trip! Experience the fun of whitewater rafting, heading down Class III rapids through a beautifully untouched primary rainforest. En-route, stop for a snack and a swim near a waterfall. You’ll arrive at the Tropical Rivers Lodge  this afternoon for an evening of relaxing, delectable dinner, and a good night’s sleep. The following day is free to enjoy any of the amazing activities that are available at the lodge: horseback riding, a canopy zip-line, guided hikes, and much more! Or, the stunning location of the lodge makes it a divine destination for spending the day meditating, relaxing, or reading a book in a hammock near the river. You’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast the next morning, before whitewater rafting your way to the Operations Center for a hot lunch – and then on to the next adventure!

Things to Know About White Water Rafting in Costa Rica

One of the most important things to remember in rafting is to always put safety first. Rafting is fun but even on smaller rapids you can be in for a bumpy ride.

If you are new to rafting it is important that you go with an experienced rafter, preferably a river guide whose job and main goal are to keep you safe. Here are a few other things you should know before you hop on a raft:

ALWAYS Listen to Your Guide

Your guide is there to keep you safe and make sure you have a fun and memorable experience but they are also there to get you home safely so that you are able to share stories of those experiences with your friends and family. Even if you have been doing this for years, you still need to listen to your guide.

When they are explaining safety to you before you start down river, in calm waters and especially when you are going through a rapid. They will explain important commands and things that you need to know to keep you and your fellow rafters safe.

Wear Your Protective Gear

You will be given a life jacket and a helmet – it is critical that you wear these at all times. Even a world class swimmer should wear this gear.

Water is a powerful force of nature and if you get knocked out of the raft for any reason, you will be thankful you have your gear on.

Even if it is a little bulky and uncomfortable, it is definitely better than cracking your head against a rock or getting pulled under a big wave. Be smart and be safe – wear your helmet and life jacket.

Don’t Panic

The MOST important thing to remember: DON’T PANIC! Especially if you fall out of the raft. If you panic, you are just wasting time that you could be spending reacting to the situation. Remain calm and always revert back to rule number one under things to know: ALWAYS listen to your guide!

4 Tips for Beginner White Water Rafters

Here are a few helpful tips and things to remember:

1. Dress the Part

You aren’t going for a Sunday stroll through the park and you are definitely going to get wet. You will want to wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. For the ladies, a swimsuit with a t-shirt and shorts is perfect for clothing.

Gentlemen, you can wear your swim trunks and a t-shirt. Water shoes, or something like outdoor sandals are probably your best bet. You want something that will stay on your feet so no flip-flops, or you might be going home without shoes.

Also remember, you will be wearing a life jacket so you probably won’t want to go shirtless or only wearing a bikini top because the life jacket might rub against exposed skin and cause irritation.

2. Wear Sunscreen

I cannot stress this enough. Even if it is an overcast or cloudy day, sunscreen is a must! You need a nice heavy duty waterproof sunscreen, at least SPF 30+ but SPF 50+ is preferred.

Cover any and everywhere that there is exposed skin. Your face, ears and neck are the most obvious places but if you are wearing shorts that expose your knees, put sunscreen on your knees as well.

Other areas to consider are arms and shoulders, the tops of your feet if they are exposed, your chest and any area that isn’t covered by your life jacket.

3. Be Careful What Your Bring in the Raft

Don’t bring anything with your that you won’t mind getting wet or even possibly floating down river without you.

Cellphones, money, credit cards, cameras, water bottles, sunglasses, or anything else you might consider taking with you should be sealed in a waterproof container and safely secured.

Things of value are probably best left hidden away in your car and some rafting places even provide storage lockers you can put your personally belongings in. If you are going to take a camera, think about taking one of the waterproof GoPro cameras.

Whatever you do take with you on the raft make sure that it is securely attached to your person. If you were to fall out of the raft, jump out of the raft to go for a swim, or even just be hit by a big rapid, you don’t want your things to get washed away from you before you can grab them.

4. Talk to your Guide

Make sure your guide knows your experience level, and if you are afraid of going on the rapids, make them aware. The last thing you want to do is end up in the middle of a Class V rapid frozen in fear.

Rafting is fun but if your guide isn’t aware of your feelings, experience and expectations, it can put not only you but everyone in the raft with you in danger.

You don’t want to attempt rapids that you aren’t ready for yet. If you are new to rafting take it slow, work your way up. Even if you stick to Class II and Class III rapids, it will still be a thrilling journey down river.

Best Time for White Water Rafting in Costa Rica

The best time of the year for rafting kind of depends on your preference. If you are interested in a more intense rafting experience, you will probably want to go during the rainy season.

This is generally between June and October. The rapids tend to be slightly more intense during this time of the year because water levels are higher.

If you prefer a more relaxed rafting experience or you are a beginner, just looking to get your feet a little wet, you should probably go during the drier season.

A great way of trying white water rafting is combining it with a yoga retreat !

When water levels are lower due to less rainfall, the rapids aren’t usually as intense as they would be during a wet season. The dry season in Costa Rica is usually between December and April.

Ready to Go?

I don’t know about you but I am certainly ready to book a ticket to Costa Rica and check out the rapids. Thinking about the beautiful places, with various classes of rapids in another country just gets my adrenaline pumping. Start planning your next vacation to go rafting in Costa Rica!
