Stanley Tucci is going back to Italy for a new TV show in 2024

By Olivia Morelli

Stanley Tucci Searching for Italy

Christmas  has come early: National Geographic has announced that  Stanley Tucci  will be returning to our screens in 2024. Almost exactly a year ago, CNN decided to drop the hit show  Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy . The decision resulted in heartbreak around the globe, and came as a shock to many – the show had won two Emmys after two seasons, after all. But now, in the spirit of gift-giving and joy, Disney-owned National Geographic has confirmed it will be starting production for a new show based on the same premise.

Stanley Tucci Searching for Italy

The show will be produced by both Tucci’s own Salt Productions company and BBC Studios’ Factual Productions, and it is set to begin filming in  January  2024. Titled  Tucci – The Heart of Italy , the show will come in the form of a 10-part docuseries taking viewers on a journey through the flavours of the European country.

Stanley Tucci Searching for Italy

In a released statement, Tom McDonald, executive vp global factual and unscripted for National Geographic, said: “National Geographic is the perfect home for Stanley to share his knowledge and passion for Italy’s people, food and culture. Our programming is all about inspiring a deeper connection to the world. With Stanley as their guide, audiences will be transported to places and to flavours they’ve never experienced before.” This suggests that the new show will go further and deeper than its predecessor. Still, many have noted that the series synopsis sounds alarmingly familiar to the last series – although, knowing Tucci, he’ll have a few charming tricks up his sleeve on how to differentiate the two.

Stanley Tucci

Speaking of charming tricks, we talked to  Stanley Tucci about his favourite travel tips and routines  – which include finding off-the-beaten-track places to stay, why he always wears a suit to fly and why his holiday rentals always have to have a high-quality kitchen.

In a statement about the new show, Tucci said: “National Geographic is all about adventure and exploration, and I am honoured to take viewers once again to explore Italy through the lens of food. In Italy’s many distinct regions there is always something new to discover and I’m more than excited to begin the process in partnership with BBC Studios.”

Five Documentaries to Take You To Italy

People at the Spanish Steps in the evening in Rome

Last week we suggested some fun, engaging reads on Italy to pass the time a bit more pleasantly during your quarantine. This week, we’re suggesting five videos to watch that will entertain you, teach you something new, and make you dream of Italy.

From Baroque brilliance to Roman cuisine, from a trip down the west coast of Italy to a culinary tour of Sicily and Sardinia to house hunting in Abruzzo, pick your preferred video or, even better, watch them all, relax and enjoy!

1. Rome: Baroque Brilliance | Rick Steves’ Europe

In ‘eternally entertaining’ Rome, the themed itineraries to choose from are endless. In this video, the great Rick Steves takes us through the heart of Rome, to admire breathtaking Baroque art and architecture, and also to mix and mingle with the Romans.

2. Italy Unpacked Series 2 | In the Heat of the Day

BBC’s Italy Unpacked series sees art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon and chef Giorgio Locatelli travel through Italy, exploring its cuisine and art history. In this episode, the two travel to the southern regions of Campania and Calabria, starting in Naples, with its vibrant street life and Baroque masterpieces, continuing down the coast to Amalfi and Paestum, and ending in untouched Calabria.

3. House Hunters Italy | A Place in the Sun (Abruzzo)

If you’re looking for cheap property in Italy to buy, Abruzzo is a good choice. The video follows the search for the perfect investment in this central region of Italy of two food- and wine-loving friends from the UK. This video can be useful for anyone interested in buying a home in Italy to better understand the Italian market and help you think about all the different elements that go into property research and buying.

4. Authentic Tastes of Sardinia & Sicily | Rick Stein's Mediterranean Escapes

From the BBC’s Documentary Channel, comes the series ‘Rick Stein's Mediterranean Escapes’, a journey across the Mediterranean’s history and food in the company of British celebrity chef Rick Stein. In this video, Rick travels to Sardinia, where he watches local fishermen catch mullet using methods that date back to ancient Roman times; and to Palermo, where he finds one of the best pasta dishes he's ever tasted.

5. Katie Parla: Tasting Rome: Fresh Flavors & Recipes From an Ancient City | Talks at Google

In this talk at Google, New Jersey-born, Rome-based cookbook author and food journalist Katie Parla discusses cucina romana , or Roman cuisine, which is her expertise; she shares Rome's celebrated traditional dishes, innovative street food scene, and forgotten recipes, traces the foundations of Roman cuisine and explains how it has evolved. A must for anyone fascinated by Roman food and the history of Italian cuisine in general. Keep in mind that "Tasting Rome" is a cookbook co-authored with Kristina Gil, an Italy-based food and travel photographer and the food and drinks editor at DesignSponge.

Clive myrie to hit the road in italy for new bbc travel series.

Twitter icon

Clive Myrie is swapping the BBC newsroom for Italy in a new travelogue series.

Myrie has been holidaying in Italy for over 30 years, but this 15-part series will allow him to dive deeper into the country.

Travelling through cities, coast and countryside, Myrie will immerse himself in Italian culture, swapping health tips with locals in a hot spring in Lazio, competing in the Tiramisu World Cup and singing in a Capri nightclub.

The country's coveted cuisine will also play a big part in the road trip, as Myrie will set out to discover what makes it so delicious. As he moves from the eternal city of Rome to the slopes of Sicily's Mount Etna, he'll learn the special technique that makes Neapolitan pizza, how to harvest the best Prosecco (at full moon in the foothills of the Alps), and why a volcano might be the perfect place to grow tomatoes.

Myrie will also try his hand at crafting some of the iconic dishes, including mozzarella in Amalfi, tortellini in Bologna and chocolate in Sicily.

To top it off, Myrie will be staying in one-of-a-kind accommodations, such as art gallery hotels, cosy vineyard abodes in repurposed wine barrels and even a traditional cave house in Matera.

Myrie said: "I hope viewers enjoy this road trip as much as I have and fall in love with Italy – a place that captured my heart many years ago. Even after several years of visiting, I always have something new to learn and explore.

“This trip helped me discover places, communities and traditions I'd never come across before and the series is packed with beautiful locations, delicious food and the friendliest people. I hope BBC viewers enjoy the Italian sunshine with me this May.”

Clive Myrie's Italian Road Trip starts on Monday 1 May at 6.30pm on BBC Two. All episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer.

Rylan Clark and Rob Rinder to team up for new BBC travel show exploring Italy

The three-part BBC Two series will see the TV personalities follow in the footsteps of the English aristocrats who took on the Grand Tour.

Rylan Clark and Rob Rinder are set to star in a new BBC travel show which will see them explore the art and culture Italy has to offer.

The three-part BBC Two series will see the TV personalities follow in the footsteps of the romantic poet Lord Byron and English aristocrats who took on the Grand Tour, a classic trip through Europe popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.

With a working title of Rob And Rylan’s Grand Tour, the series will see them visit artistic treasures in Venice, Florence and Rome.

Starting their journey in Venice, the pair will explore artistic masterpieces of the city from Tintoretto to Canaletto as well as discovering how gay men in the 18th century found freedom at the city’s famous Carnival.

Clark and Rinder will also try to learn Venetian painting techniques and glass blowing.

In Florence, they will delve into the Renaissance artistic period including classic pieces like Botticelli’s Venus.

Their last stop will be in Rome, where they will explore the classical ruins, recreate Baroque masterpieces and channel their inner operatic divas at a rooftop performance.

They will also be marking the 200th anniversary of Byron’s death by referring to the poet’s poems and letters about his Grand Tour alongside the diaries of others who made the trip.

Along the journey, the duo will be learning what it was to be be a Grand Tourist, trying flamboyant Italian looks, fencing, dancing and romancing.

Clark said: “When I found out that Rob and I actually get to go travelling around Italy for the Grand Tour, I couldn’t have packed my suitcase quicker.

“We’re not going to be your typical Brits abroad though as we properly immerse ourselves in all of Italy’s cultural offerings.

“Rob will be teaching me all about Italian history and art as we follow in the footsteps of the cultural greats, while I show Rob how to dance on bars.

“This series is going to be eye-opening, interesting and I bet we’ll have a laugh or two along the way.”

Rylan Clark comments

The TV presenter, 34, previously co-hosted Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two but stepped down from the role earlier this year.

He was also among one of the BBC’s commentators for the recent Eurovision Song Contest and hosts a Saturday Radio 2 show.

TV personality and criminal barrister Rinder said he cannot wait to “get stuck in” to seeing some of the “finest things” Italy has to offer.

“The Grand Tour is iconic, especially as we’ll be following in the footsteps of some of history’s biggest cultural contributors”, he added.

“While Rylan and I almost certainly have different intentions for our trip, I can’t think of anyone I’d rather do this journey with.”

Rinder rose to fame as the formidable Judge Rinder on his eponymous ITV reality courtroom show, and later went on to host Channel 4 series The Rob Rinder Verdict.

Alistair Pegg, commissioning editor for arts at the BBC, said: “I can’t think of two funnier, warmer, more entertaining travelling companions for a trip through the glories of the Grand Tour than Rob and Rylan.

“Viewers are going to get a totally new perspective on some of the wonders of Italian art and culture in their hands, and I’m looking forward to the journey with them.”

Stellavision Travel , a company dedicated to inclusive and empowering international group travel experiences for women, transgender and non-binary people, recently announced a new, size-inclusive edition of their signature Italy tour in collaboration with Tess Holliday . Holliday started the Eff Your Beauty Standards movement and in 2015 became the first model above a size 20 to land a major modeling contract .

Stellavision Travel’s founder, Zoe Shapiro, says her company is part of a personal and professional mandate. She identifies as plus-size and says she’s always felt othered by her experience of being in a larger body. I spoke with Shapiro about what makes size-inclusive travel unique and about the new collaboration with Holliday.

Secret Italy Tour

“What makes a tour size-inclusive is the knowledge that your tour organizer has adjusted every detail of your trip with your needs in mind as well as knowing that you'll be in the company of like-minded travelers who share a lived experience,” begins Shapiro, who jokingly refers to herself as a combination of a shade vampire, hydration police, and air conditioner connoisseur. Shapiro says that this includes things like ensuring restaurant seating doesn’t have restrictive arm rests that might make trying to sit and enjoy a meal difficult or impossible , as well as making sure she’s doing more than merely offering the lesser version of an experience that was designed for someone in a smaller body. “I cannot change the world. Some external factors and barriers will remain beyond my ability to affect. But in obvious and inadvertent ways, I'm finessing all the details with this (plus-size) audience in mind. Travel should be a source of joy and discovery, not anxiety about fitting in," says Shapiro.

Holliday will lead a special edition of Stellavision’s Secret Southern Italy tour. The tour itinerary kicks off in Rome with an aperitivo and a group dinner where travelers meet one another, their tour guide and the attending photographer over a traditional Roman feast. The following day promises a slow-paced walking tour through Rome’s most historic neighborhood to learn the role that women played in local monuments and moments followed by a private performance from Rome-based Soprano, Courtney Mills , and a dinner party in the secret garden of a women-owned restaurant. The group moves onto Matera in the Basilicata region for a tour of the vineyards of a female vintner. The tour promises “an unforgettable journey of self-love and exploration in the stunning landscapes of Southern Italy.”

The itinerary for the Secret Southern Italy tour hosted by Stellavision founder, Zoe Shapiro, and ... [+] plus-size model and body positive advoce, Tess Holliday

"I looked up to Tess Holliday even before I knew her name and impact, using her #effyourbeautystandards hashtag on personal posts,” says Shapiro. “To be collaborating with one of the body positivity movement's pioneering activists, and hosting her on her first trip to Italy, is a milestone for Stellavision, an indication of the growing community we're building that affirms all bodies deserve to be celebrated, catered to and experience the joy of a behind-the-scenes, beachside, Italian vacation."

Holiday was not available for comment, but of the collaboration Shapiro shared, "We're incredibly proud to partner with Tess to offer an experience that celebrates every body, inviting women to connect deeply with themselves, each other, and the rich culture of Italy."

Stellavision Travel offers size-inclusive tours of Italy

Of the plus-size travel gap, written about by outlets like the New York Times , Shapiro says it’s a product of travel professionals protecting their contacts and the fact that not many tour operators consider the needs of people in bigger bodies. This affects individual travel as well as group travel. “For instance if the itinerary says there is a walking tour, I know I certainly would have many additional questions,” says Shapiro. “Does a 3-hour walking tour mean 3 hours on my feet? Does it cover 1 kilometer in 3 hours or 5 kilometers? Is the terrain flat like New York or hilly like Lisbon? And who on earth will I be experiencing it with? Can I expect to slow down the group?”

Not many tour operators consider the needs of people in bigger bodies

These are normal questions for many travelers, but they often go unasked and unanswered because of things like weight-based and mobility-based stigma. “Stellavision removes those questions both by building programming that is supportive of people in bigger bodies and being completely transparent about what to expect, in order for our travelers to be empowered and confident in the experience,” says Shapiro. “Knowing precisely what conditions to expect allows travelers to self select which experiences and tours are right for them.”

"From our bespoke walking tour in Rome to a private opera concert, these things are just for us, for ... [+] once,” says Zoe Shapiro, Founder and CEO of Stellavision Travel.

“In a world where so many options aren't available to plus-size people, from clothing we want to buy to travel that isn't inclusive, I want to create an experience of Italy that doesn't simply offer access but has items on the itinerary that are available only to them. From our bespoke walking tour in Rome to a private opera concert, these things are just for us, for once,” says Shapiro.

Founded in 2021, Stellavision Travel offers all-inclusive adventures designed for women, nonbinary, and transgender travelers. With a focus on small groups and authentic experiences, Stellavision connects travelers to Italy and beyond with the goal of fostering empowerment and community. The final few spots on Tess's tour (July 27 - Aug 3 ) are still available to book. The company also just announced their newest size inclusive route, a culinary themed autumn tour with Emiko Davies , who has been vocal about size inclusivity from a mother's perspective .

Woman who bought a €1 home in Italy reveals how she transformed it

bbc travel show italy

A woman who took a chance on buying a property in the €1 scheme in Italy ended up spending thousands to transform it into her €450,000 (£384,000) dream home.

Meredith Tabbone, 45, decided to bid on a one euro house on a ‘whim’, after her friend sent her an article about the scheme.

The European house scheme means people across the world can buy homes for a single euro (around 85p), which is a far cry from the £724,780 average sold price for a property in London according to Zoopla.

It’s not just the birthplace of pasta and pizza where the scheme is available; homes in France and Croatia have previously been put on the market for €1 or less.

However there’s a catch – the buildings are usually in desperate need of TLC and are never in a pristine condition, so if you’re on the lookout for a fixer-upper , this scheme could be right up your street.

Meredith, who is originally from Chicago, isn’t afraid of a project. Bids for the building in Sambuca di Sicilia, Sicily,  started at just a euro when it went up for auction in January 2019, but she decided to throw in an offer of €5,100 (£4,400).

Originally built in the 1600s, the disused building had no electricity or running water and a roof thick with asbestos.

bbc travel show italy

‘The house was in very bad condition – but in many ways, it was everything I expected it to be and more. It had so much charm. It had such interesting architectural detail. You could really see the history coming through the walls.

‘At first, the plan was just to turn it into a small getaway house. While we originally just wanted it as a tiny getaway but we’ve turned it into a dream home.’

bbc travel show italy

Before finding her dream home, Meredith started researching how to get Italian citizenship in 2016 and discovered her dad Michael’s great-grandfather, Fillippo Tabbone, came from Sambuca di Sicilia –a small village in Sicily.

Three years later, she heard councils in rural Sicily were auctioning off abandoned houses with a €1 starting bid in a bid to regenerate the village.

bbc travel show italy

But despite its very obvious flaws, Meredith, a financial advisor, saw its potential. After being told she got the €1 home in May 2019, she also bought the house next door for €31,700 (£27,000) in a private sale and knocked through to create a four bedroom, five bathroom home in August 2020.

She then spent €450,000 (£384,000) over the next five years creating her dream holiday home, decked out with an outdoor kitchen , spa and outdoor party room.

The homeowner spent £661 to remove the roof of the €1 home, which was only 750 square feet. Combined with the home next door, Meredith now has a 3,000 square foot holiday home.

After five years of hard work, Meredith’s holiday home was finally completed in April 2024 and she plans to spend four months a year in Italy.

bbc travel show italy

And the renovations in Italy have been so successful she’s also bought two guest houses in the same village for €31,700 (£28,000) in total, but they’ll also need repair.

She also bought a disused building for €68,000 (£58,000), which she’s turning into an art gallery and apartment for artists to stay in.

Why are Italy and France selling houses for €1?

There’s a reason European countries are selling off houses for so little .

In Saint-Amand-Montrond, a commune in France, it’s because the town is trying to attract more permanent residents. At present, just over 9,000 people live here, so it’s relatively quiet.

There have been similar cases in Italy, where places like Taranto, Pettineo, Pratola Pelinga , Sant’Elia a Pianisi and Sambuca di Sicilia have offered up €1 house purchase schemes over the last few years.

The reasons are the same as in France: to encourage people, particularly younger generations, into the local area to stabilise the population.

Rules can differ between towns, but as was seen with a recent scheme in Mussomeli in Sicily, Italy , buyers needed to: demonstrate the ability to support expenses for the renovation of the property; prepare a project for the renovation within one year of purchase; start work within two months of the building permit being issued; and put down a deposit of £5,000 that they would lose if the work did not go ahead within the three-year time period.

As the scheme is intended to attract more permanent residents, the idea is that you’ll spend most of your time here integrating with the local community.

South Africa elections 2024 explained in maps and charts

On May 29, South Africans head to the polls. After 30 years of dominance, the ANC faces its toughest election yet, needing 50 percent to maintain its majority.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 in maps and charts-1716730785

On May 29, South Africans will vote in national and provincial elections to elect a new National Assembly and state legislatures. The National Assembly will choose the president for the next five years.

It will be the country’s seventh democratic general election since apartheid ended in 1994 when Nelson Mandela was elected president with the ANC winning 62.5 percent of the 400 seats in the National Assembly.

After 30 years of dominance, the African National Congress (ANC) faces its toughest election yet, needing 50 percent of the National Assembly to maintain its parliamentary majority.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 - South Africa at a glance-1716730775

When do polls open?

A total of 23,292 polling stations will be open from 7am to 9pm (05:00 GMT to 19:00 GMT), with election day declared a public holiday to facilitate voting.

According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), 27.79 million South Africans aged 18 and above have registered for the elections this year up from 26.74 million in 2019.

Registered voters living abroad cast their votes on May 17 and 18 and voters with special needs, including pregnant women and people with disabilities, will cast their ballots two days before election day on May 27 and 28.

How does the election work?

South Africa follows a proportional voting system where parties and candidates compete for 400 seats in the parliament known as the National Assembly.

For the first time, independent candidates will compete in the elections. To accommodate this change, voters will receive three ballots instead of two, each requiring a choice of one party or candidate.

Two ballots will be for electing the National Assembly, and the third will be for electing members of the provincial legislature in each of South Africa’s nine provinces.

South Africa’s election management body, the IEC , cleared 14,889 candidates, including 70 political parties and 11 independents, to contest 887 seats in the May vote.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 - how voting works-1716785010

  • Same ballot across the country
  • Voters elect one of 52 political parties
  • Represents 200 seats in the National Assembly
  • Unique to each province
  • Voters elect either a political party or an independent candidate
  • Represents the remaining 200 seats in the National Assembly
  • Voters elect political parties and independent candidates
  • The number of seats is determined by the population size in each province

Who is in South Africa’s current National Assembly?

South Africa’s lower house of parliament currently includes 14 political parties represented by 400 members, allocated proportionally based on the votes each party received in the 2019 elections.

  • African National Congress (ANC): 230 seats (57.5 percent)
  • Democratic Alliance (DA): 84 seats (21 percent)
  • Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF): 44 seats (11 percent)
  • Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP): 14 seats (3.5 percent)

Ten other parties make up the remaining 28 seats.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 - current national assembly-1716730760

How is the president in South Africa elected?

South Africans do not directly vote for the president.

Instead, they elect 400 members of the National Assembly, who then select the president by a simple majority – 201 or more votes determine the presidency.

If the ANC secures more than 50 percent of the seats, President Cyril Ramaphosa, 71, will most likely be re-elected as president to serve his second and final five-year term.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 - Ramaphosa and ANC-1716730770

What if no party receives a majority?

Opinion polls suggest the governing ANC, which is hovering at about 40 percent , will likely lose its majority.

If this happens, then the ANC will need to try to make a deal with other parties to form a coalition government, with the choice of coalition partner depending on their distance from the 50 percent mark.

Nevertheless, unless the ANC performs much worse than expected, there is a slim chance they could be completely removed from government.

How has the ANC performed in previous elections?

The ANC has won every election since the end of apartheid in 1994 when Mandela became the country’s first Black president.

In the 1994 and 1999 elections, the ANC won 62.5 percent and 66.36 percent of the votes, respectively, with high voter turnouts of 86 percent and 89 percent.

In 2004, amid a lower voter turnout of 76 percent, the ANC reached its highest levels, clinching almost 70 percent of the vote and securing Thabo Mbeki a second term as president.

In September 2008, Kgalema Motlanthe assumed the role of caretaker president after President Mbeki resigned, at the request of his party. He held this position until 2009 when Jacob Zuma took office following the ANC’s victory with nearly 66 percent of the vote.

Five years later, in the 2014 elections, the ANC emerged victorious but with a reduced share of the vote at 62 percent. The Democratic Alliance (DA) made significant gains, securing 22 percent of the vote. The newly formed Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party under former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) President Julius Malema garnered 6 percent of the vote.

In 2018, following years of internal disputes and scandals, Zuma announced his resignation, leading Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to assume the presidency.

In the 2019 elections, voter turnout hit a low of 66 percent, with the ANC receiving 57.5 percent of the vote.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections - previous election results-1716730754

Who is likely to win?

Four of the biggest players to watch out for in this year’s election are the ANC, the DA, the MK and the EFF.

INTERACTIVE - South Africa elections 2024 -major political parties-1716730781

ANC – Cyril Ramaphosa (71)

According to the most recent opinion poll by local broadcaster eNCA , support for the ANC stands at about 43.4 percent – a two-point increase from two months ago.

The ANC is expected to win majorities in seven out of South Africa’s nine provinces.

However, it is projected to be defeated by Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), and also in the Western Cape, where the DA is poised for another victory.

DA – John Steenhuisen (48)

Polling in second with about 18.6 percent is the country’s official opposition DA, which has been campaigning on a platform to “rescue South Africa”.

The DA currently holds a majority in South Africa’s Western Cape province, with Cape Town as its capital city. In the 2019 elections, it won 55.45 percent of the vote in the province.

MK – Jacob Zuma (82)

The MK party, named after the ANC’s former paramilitary wing uMkhonto we Sizwe (meaning “Spear of the Nation”), is currently polling in third at 14.1 percent.

The party led by former President Zuma was formed in 2023 and is expected to gain seats from the ANC.

In May, South Africa’s Constitutional Court barred Zuma from running for parliament following his 2021 contempt of court conviction; however, he remains the face of the party and is expected to present a candidate from the party as his stand-in.

EFF – Julius Malema (43)

Bringing up the top four, with 11.4 percent, is the anti-establishment EFF led by Julius Malema.

Formerly an ally of Zuma, Malema was expelled from the ANC in 2012 due to his disagreements with the then-president and other party members. He then went on to establish the EFF in 2013.

When will the results be announced?

The IEC normally begins releasing partial results within hours of polls closing.

In the last national election held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, the final results were announced three days later on Saturday, May 11.

However, this year, with one more ballot to count, verifying results may take longer.

The IEC says it will announce the election results on Sunday, June 2.
