THE SEA TO INFINITY

Coming from Les Issambres, the eye is captured by the incredible beauty of the blue immensity. The waves first border a steep coast before reaching the sand of La Nartelle, a beach very popular with lovers of water sports and swimming. At its end, Pointe des Sardinaux, a protected natural site, faces its beacon at sea, a renowned diving spot. The three bends that follow concentrate all the beauty of the Côte d’Azur: magnificent umbrella pines clinging to the cornice… There are barely a few hundred meters left before reaching the marina over which the bell tower watches over. ‘church. Just a stone’s throw away is the beautiful city center beach. After crossing the bridge and its bow-string arcades, then crossing the nautical club, you will discover the attractions of the Croisette beach: on the port side, head for a carpet of soft pebbles, on the starboard side, long live the warm sand . So, dive into the turquoise water…

PROVENCE AT THE HEART

Sainte-Maxime is very attached to its Provencal roots; here we celebrate the votive festival and invite you to discover local folklore, such as the Saint-Pierre festival or that of Saint-Jean which celebrates the olive, because the Maximois region is home to the largest olive grove in the Var. Don’t forget to visit the Maures forest before leaving the area. Take the Col du Gratteloup and take the picturesque road which leads to the Plan de la Tour crossing Catalugno. Enjoy the view, it’s superb!

LIVE INTENSELY ALL YEAR ROUND!

If you enjoy shopping, there are many beautiful boutiques in Sainte-Maxime and welcome you all year round. Looking for activity? You can practice all water sports (sailing, diving, boating, jet skiing, water skiing, etc.), but also practice golf, tennis, all forms of hiking (mountain biking, horse riding, hiking), or enjoy a family stroll in the Myrtles botanical garden. On the cultural side, there is no shortage of shows at the Théâtre de la Mer or the Carré Gaumont, as well as numerous exhibitions. Events await you over the months: corso du mimosa, Bike Festival, Fest’italia, summer evenings, Rallye du Var or Maxime Geek Univers… Enjoy beautiful evenings with music on the seafront terraces or in the many and tasty restaurants, or even try the jackpot at the Casino! Finally, if you like contemporary architecture, the Tourist Office offers you its thematic guided tours.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

The town owes its name to an 8th century Provençal nun, mother superior of the Callian monastery. This saint is celebrated every year in May during a bravado. Depopulated in the Middle Ages, a repopulation project undertaken by the monks of the Thoronet Abbey, lords of the place, in the 16th century failed and it was in the 18th century that Sainte-Maxime developed through the construction of houses on the banks. of the sea: the embryo of the village and the current port. The railway line linking Toulon to Saint-Raphaël at the end of the 19th century enabled its economic and touristic expansion.

NOT TO BE MISSED

• Visiting Sainte-Maxime means strolling along the recently renovated seafront avenue to go shopping, enjoy an ice cream or have a drink on the terrace. For a cultural trip, do not hesitate to pass through the old town, appreciate the architecture of the interwar period (several buildings have the label “Remarkable contemporary architecture”). • Take advantage of this getaway to smell the scents: spices, fresh fruits and vegetables, cold meats, flowers from the Provencal market or the covered market. Rather fish, go to the port to the fishermen’s stall, rather flea market, head for the seaside promenade. You want to relax, head to the Myrtles botanical garden; and right next to the seaside: swimming, relaxing, the dream!

• From the square in front of the parish church, a lovely panorama over the entire Gulf of Saint-Tropez. • From the town hall esplanade (former silkworm farm), magnificent view of the town and the Gulf. • From the Château des Tourelles where Léon Gaumont lived. • Pointe des Sardinaux, small wild pine forest, ideal for picnics or discovering the aquatic fauna and flora.

Visit Sainte-Maxime (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France)

The resort of Sainte-Maxime is on the Mediterranean, on the north coast of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez which it faces across the water, and 15 kilometres from Frejus .

The south-facing town is backed by hills, so has almost the perfect Mediterranean climate - sunny and also sheltered from northerly winds.

Explore Sainte-Maxime

Sainte-Maxime town has few things of great interest although the small old town is pretty, and a visit will pass a pleasant hour or so. The small town centre is also very busy and lively in the summer and you will find numerous restaurants.

Sainte-Maxime town centre

Although Sainte-Maxime is a pleasant town and makes an enjoyable break from the beach, and the walk around the port is very attractive, people don't visit for the town, they come for the coast and sunshine!

Among the attractions in the town centre you will see the church and the Tour Carré with a small museum commemorating folk traditions in the area, the two monuments close together behind the port.

This tower was at one time key to the region's defences as cannon fire from this tower along with cannon fire from the top of ‘Portalet’ in Saint-Tropez on the opposite side of the bay acted as warnings for attacks by pirates in the Saint-Tropez bay area.

The tourist office for Sainte-Maxime is close to the tower, at the eastern end of the Plage du Centre Ville.

The main beach in the centre of Sainte-Maxime is nice and sandy and quality certified and there are lots of water sports available to keep you amused, and many visitors will not feel the need to venture further when staying in the town. Close to the beach there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to relax in.

There are several other beaches close by, including the Plage de la Croisette a short distance south-west of the town centre and several beaches as you follow the coast towards Saint-Raphael including the Plage de la Mardrague, the Plage de la Nartelle and the Plage des Eléphants.

All the beaches are sandy, it is just a question of how far you want to go to avoid the crowds!

If you are staying in the area, Sainte-Maxime is the largest of the towns on the bay of Saint-Tropez and you will find a reasonable selection of bars, restaurants and hotels, as well as other shops and businesses. There is even an 18 hole golf-course complete with sea-views close by.

Those of you with youth and stamina will have no problem finding clubs and bars that will keep you amused until very late into the early hours, while for children Sainte-Maxime is home to Aqualand, a large water park with swimming pools and slides.

The town does boast a Botanic Garden although really it is just a park area - it is just across the road from part of the beach and a good shady spot to shelter from the sun.

Market day in Sainte-Maxime is Thursday morning and there is a covered market on Rue Fernand Bessy every morning.

Attractions nearby

The resort of Saint-Tropez and the harbour town at Port-Grimaud are pleasant places to explore, while on the hills behind Sainte-Maxime a visit to the picturesque villages at Gassin and Ramatuelle are highly recommended.

You can get a boat across to Saint-Tropez from Sainte-Maxime which is much more pleasant than facing the summer traffic along this part of the riviera!

Sainte-Maxime is also one of the towns along the popular Route du Mimosa .

Sainte-Maxime Elegant and familial

Sainte-Maxime and the marina is a popular seaside resort in the Mediterranean, locked into the Massif des Maures by a vast area of woodland which extends well beyond the surrounding hills. The most populous town in the Gulf it is very welcoming and one of the liveliest in the area.

Sea, boats & sun… If you come from Issambres, you will not want to tear your eyes away from the vast blue stretch of water ahead. The waves break first on a rugged coastline, before reaching the beautiful sandy beach of Nartelle, popular with fans of watersports and swimming. At the far end lies Pointe des Sardinaux, a protected nature area facing a beacon out at sea and a well-known site for scuba diving. The three bends which follow symbolise the idealised image we have of the Côte d’Azur: lovely parasol pines in harmony with the coast road; a few hundred metres further on the marina with space for 800 boats, watched over by the church’s clock tower; and the town centre’s beach just a stone’s throw away. Before this, over the landmark bowstring bridge and past the Club Nautique, you will discover all the attractions of the Croisette beach: to port, a carpet of smooth pebbles, to starboard hot sand, and aft diving into turquoise blue water. Atmosphere guaranteed all year ! Sainte-Maxime is a lively place all year round. You love shopping? You will be spoilt for choice with all the boutiques! You are active? Every kind of watersport is available (sailing, diving, boating, jet-skis, water skiing…), but you can also play golf, tennis, do all forms of hiking (mountain bikes, horse riding, walking), or stroll with the family in the Myrtes botanical garden. You love shows? We are already preparing the next ones in the Théâtre de la Mer and Carré Sainte-Maxime cultural centre, the finest in the Gulf. Interested in architecture - then the art deco circuit is for you; or in events - Free Flight, Var Rally and Maxime Geek Unviers; or going out - the new waterfront’s café terraces welcome you with music and the restaurants are legion. But that’s before perhaps winning the jackpot at the Casino ! Yes, atmosphere guaranteed in Sainte-Maxime, the station can be proud of its cultural programming. Provence in the heart Sainte-Maxime likes to remind us of its Provencal roots; February celebrate the Mimosa and the votive festival in may invites you to find out more about the folklore and parade heralding the arrival of mimosa. We also celebrate Saint Peter, Saint John and the olive tree, as Sainte-Maxime is home to the largest olive grove in the Var. The very soul of Provence is revealed with just a few drops of this golden elixir on local seafood or produce from the land. There is a real sense of being at home here; and to guard this legacy the town takes part in quality initiatives like Famille Plus, guaranteeing a personalised welcome for children and parents, the Blue Flag for quality bathing water and it is a station classée de tourisme for the quality of the welcome. Of course you cannot leave the area without doing a tour of the mimosa forest. To get there head for the Col du Gratteloup via the new highway and take the picturesque route to Plan de la Tour; then another 2.6km to the parking area and start of the Catalugno path. It’s another world: you will see a world blue-green-gold ; it’s wonderful !

A stroll along Sainte-Maxime’s seafront which has had a makeover; shopping or having an ice cream or refreshments on a terrace.

Sainte-Maxime

Sainte-Maxime, Golfe de Saint Tropez

Charming seaside town with wonderful areas for walking and hiking

Sheltered from the winds by hills that rise behind the coast, the popular beach resort of Sainte Maxime sits on the coast between Frejus and Saint Tropez.

In the Var, Sainte-Maxime is a pleasant example of a resort with a lively town, a busy marina and a string of fine beaches. The mild climate and the beauty of the village attracts many tourists, painters, poets and writers. The old town is filled by lively pedestrian streets, beautiful gardens and a large pier with a wonderful panorama of the Gulf.

The emphasis in this town is on today: today's sun, today's fun and perhaps more of that tomorrow. Visitors jam the roads, fill the parking lots to the last place and flock to the beaches. During sun breaks, they stroll along the many beach and sun-themed shops or flop down in one of the sidewalk cafés along the boulevard. Others venture into the older part of town which has been nicely renovated and spruced up with boutiques filled with Provençal goodies and a large choice of restaurants. The narrow, winding streets and alleys are a great way to cool off the summer heat.

The most demanding holiday makers will love the town beaches and those in the direction of Saint Tropez such as the beach of La Croisette. The most popular are located west of Sainte Maxime.

History & Culture in [locality]

Sainte-Maxime's history dates back to the early Middle Ages and a monastery with its name that has now disappeared. There are very few signs in town of an early history, though close to the port the Tour Carrée des Dames stands prominently. It was constructed as a defensive tower in the late Middle Ages by the monks of the islands of Lérins. Now, it functions as the museum of local tradition and history.

A very pleasant town, with a vibrant beach resort, a busy port, daily markets and a few lovely old buildings in the small historic centre. The pedestrian street is lined with bars, restaurants and boutiques, and it comes alive on summer evenings with music and a good mix of tourists and locals. Admittedly, there's not a tremendous amount to see when it comes to history or architecture, but Sainte-Maxime is above all a town to relax in, spending long days at the beach, eating at nice restaurants, wandering around the pretty port or having a cocktail at sunset looking over the Gulf of Saint Tropez.

Sights & Attractions in [locality]

Sainte-Maxime is more of a beach resort than a history-buff's destination, but there are a few traces of the town's medieval past, including the beautiful 15th century town hall (mairie). The Tour Carrée was built in the 16th century by monks to fend off invaders, often maruading pirates from Saint Tropez across the bay. There's also a small folk museum in the Tour Carée, as well as a battery of cannons facing the Gulf de Saint Tropez.

Beaches in [locality]

Sainte-Maxime has lovely wide, white-sand beaches stretching in both directions, with lots of public space as well as private beach clubs with restaurants. The beaches of Sainte Maxime offer every watersport you could hope for, including parasailing, jet skiing, sailing and water skiing.

Sainte-Maxime is well known for its diving, with sunken submarines, yachts and torpedo boats to explore, as well as some rocky underwater topography and marine life. There are also fishing excursions off the coast.

Events in [locality]

For me, the main attraction in Sainte-Maxime is the covered market that opens daily in summer and only mornings (except Monday) in winter. There you find excellent quality in local produce and products, fishmongers, bakers and flower shops. On Thursday morning there is also an open-air market.

Things to do in [locality]

While Saint Maxime is primarily a beach resort, there are plenty of other activities on offer. The surrounding hills are wonderful for walking, mountain-biking and horse-riding, and you can pick up the long-range hiking trail 'The Balcony of the Côte d'Azur' just 10kms north of town. There's also a coastal path for bike-riding (see our Riviera biking guide here.) Those looking for sporting activities could use the nearby tennis or golf facilities, or head to the clay pigeon shooting range just outside town.

Sainte-Maxime is also home to Aqualand, the Riviera's largest waterpark; and there's also a pleasant Botanical Garden for walking and picnics.

This area is good golfing country, and those visiting Sainte-Maxime have several golf courses to choose between. The 18-hole, par 72 course at Golf de Sainte-Maxime has wonderful views across the coast and mountains from above the town and a quite challenging, hilly course. The excellent Golfe de Beauvallon is two miles out of Sainte-Maxime very close to the sea, offering a moderate to hard 70 par, 18-hole game with stunning views of the Gulf of Saint Tropez. There is also the Golfe Club Saint Tropez a bit further afield at Gassin, a fairly exclusive place with a par 71, 18-hole course set in countryside of hills, forest, vineyards and sea. For more information, see our Golfing Pages.

Nightlife in [locality]

This seaside resort has plenty of bars, a sports pub, and a few late-opening clubs in the summer, although those looking for the really glamorous clubs should head down the coast to Saint Tropez to mingle with the champagne and caviar set.

Enjoy the summer vibe in a bar in the pedestrianised street in town, have a cocktail in a beach club or hit the Casino de Barriere for a game of blackjack, roulette or poker. On summer nights there are also free music concerts in the outdoor theatre, as well as fireworks shows.

There are buses connecting Sainte Maxime with Saint Raphael, Saint Tropez and other major towns in the Var.

The closest train station is at Saint-Raphael where you can connect with the major rail line that runs along the Riviera to Italy.

Those travelling from Nice airport can take the Line 20 bus from the airport and change for Sainte-Maxime at nearby Frejus. You can also take a boat between Saint Maxime and Cannes, or Sainte Maxime and Saint Tropez.
