Funan Mall: A Thrilling Shopping Experience for All

Funan Mall, known as an IT haven in Singapore where anyone looking for anything electronics related can go, has now become the viral talk of the country since it had a revamp worth up to S$560 million. The Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat officially launched a digitally enhanced Funan Mall at the end of 2019, even though it started operating by June that year. This major reconstruction also resulted in a new name for the mall, it is now labeled as Funan DigitaLife Mall, although most locals would still refer to it as Funan Mall. The revamp was a much needed one as well, as the mall has been standing since January 1985 known then as the Funan Center. It has a total of 178 outlets spread over six floors, with anchor tenants such as Challenger Superstore occupying the most space in the mall.

However, Funan Mall had to face the reality that online shopping was rising in popularity. The businesses in the mall started experiencing a decrease in sales, forcing tenants to close down. From then, the site went through a rollercoaster of changes. It was initially planned to be renovated in 2014, yet it was demolished in mid-2016. All the tenants had to relocate elsewhere. However, when the new commercial building re-opened in June 2019, many tenants moved back in. A more stylish and artistic design as well as all the digital infusions in the mall drove the people back into Funan Mall, wanting to experience all the new things that the revamp had to offer. Now, Funan Mall has become one of the shopping centers that travellers must visit. In fact, there are many hotels in Singapore that would refer travellers to visit Funan Mall.

How to Get to Funan Mall

travel store funan

If you’re looking for Funan Mall nearest MRT, it won’t be hard. One of the major reconstructions in Funan Mall is the underground walkway under the North Bridge Road linking Funan Mall to City Hall MRT Station. You can take the City Hall East West Line (EW13) or the North South Line (NS25). If you’re taking a private vehicle, the new Funan Mall parking has over 400 lots, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to find a parking space even during public holidays in Singapore . Traveling to Funan Mall is much easier if you’re staying in a hotel , because the hotel management will definitely direct you to the nearest public transportation or some hotels even provide free shuttle buses. There are plenty of bus stops opposite the treasury, it depends on which direction you will be coming from. Moreover, Funan Mall is such a well-known place, it is almost impossible to get lost or not being able to find your way back to your hotel.

If you’re unable to take public transportation or a private vehicle, you can take the taxi or online taxis. The taxi drivers, who are usually locals that have been living in Singapore for a long time, should know where Funan Mall is. If you type in Funan Mall in your online taxi mobile application as the destination, you will definitely find it, and we do recommend planning how to get back to your accommodation from Funan Mall even before you arrive there just so that you won’t get lost.

What’s New in Funan Mall

travel store funan

When Funan Mall reopened its doors on June 28th, 2019, hundreds of new visitors eagerly waited at the doors to experience everything the new mall had to offer. The mall had gone through major renovations and redesign, mainly involving futuristic digital enhancements to cater to today’s online shopping hype. One of the first things that locals appreciated was that the new Funan is home to Taobao’s first Singapore store. Brompton Junction, a famous British manufacturer known for their folding bikes, also debuted their flagship store in Funan Mall. In addition, Singaporean fashion brand Love, Bonito also set up their largest outlet in Funan. Aside from these international brands, some of the tenants that used to occupy Funan Mall also returned, although they had mixed feelings about the new look. For the younger generation that are digital savvy, the mall is exciting and convenient. However, for the older generation or those who simply wanted to shop without relying on the internet connection all the time, the old 2016 Funan Mall lingered in their minds. This futuristic mall has the first fully-unmanned futsal court, and visitors can witness robot-enabled handsfree shopping while they’re here. In fact, most of the visitors said that they feel like they’re in a sci-fi movie after exploring Funan Mall.

In regards to the online shopping popularity, Funan Mall embraces this new trend by introducing a 24-hour click-and-collect drive-through service. At first, visitors were bewildered when they saw the new Funan Mall directory, which has The Tree of Life at the center of it. This is one of the highlights of the reconstruction, a 25-metre tall structure serving as the centerpiece houses retail pods for brands to showcase their products on a pop-up concept and host workshops. It also connects to other parts of the building, including office blocks, serviced residences, and an urban farm. The Tree of Life is simply a rebuttal to the online shopping fame, where in online shopping, the shoppers won’t be able to try the products, but in Funan Mall they surely can. We’ve gone through the shopping mall, but Funan Mall is now more than just shopping. It features twin office blocks where executives can access the offices using a sophisticated facial recognition technology. Aside from it being part of their initiative to make things more secure, the executives at the offices have expressed that they feel cool when they do it for the first few times. Of course, shopping and working in offices isn’t all. Funan Mall food is something that visitors won’t lack from, as they sport various types of cuisines in their KOPItech food court. What’s even more unique is that the visitors of the KOPItech food court can pay for their food using cryptocurrencies! This was especially surprising, it shows how much the new building really thought of catering for future generations. However, other payment types are also available, the more human kind, if you may. Chris Chang as the CapitaLand Singapore managing director said that the new Funan aims to enhance satisfaction through better customer experiences by adding a digital layer to the retail space. This wasn’t the only thing they used to excite visitors. The mall also distributed tote bags with up to S$100 worth of shopping vouchers if they spent S$50 in a single receipt for the first 300 shoppers. This would explain the crowd waiting outside of Funan Mall’s door during their reopening, as many are eager to make large purchases on digital products such as mobile phones, laptops, TVs, etcetera using the vouchers.

Although Funan Mall is a great place to be, we understand that travellers won’t stay in just one place for long. Luckily, Funan Mall is strategically situated in near vicinity to some of the must-visit tourist attractions in Singapore. Just a short walk to Stamford Road and you’ll be able to find the National Museum of Singapore. It is a classic and modern architecture in a large, vibrant museum filled with Singaporean artifacts. Dating back to 1887, the National Museum of Singapore is the oldest museum in Singapore with a progressive mind. We say progressive because even though it has a 19th century old colonial exterior, this museum uses cutting-edge technology to present the nation’s developments. You’ll find fresh perspectives of the history in Singapore in its galleries that will take you on an immersive journey through creative storytelling. This museum, through its digital installments, redefines conventional museum experience. Aside from that, as a cultural landmark in Singapore, the National Museum also hosts some of the most well-known activities and events. The Night Festival, a popular exhibition of art installations, performances and film screenings are a local favorite. It shows the different styles and genres of not only artists but of the people in Singapore. You can also find a wide range of facilities and services such as the resource centre with a growing collection of 15,000 publications on cultural studies, design, and Singapore’s history. You can also rent the venue for other occasions, such as weddings or galas.

The National Museum of Singapore is North from Funan Mall, but there is also a must-visit tourist attraction that is South from Funan Mall, which is the area of Clarke Quay. At the River Valley Road, not only will you find the amazing area of Clarke Quay, but also the Singapore River. Clarke Quay was the center of trade of Singapore in 1819, where goods would be transported upstream to the warehouses. This was the beginning of its history. Due to the traffic from the trading activity, the river became so polluted that the government decided to clean up the river and its surroundings for ten years. The city itself has gone through many major developments to combine history with modernity. Today, surprisingly, Clarke Quay is mostly known for its nightlife more than its breathtaking water views. The Clarke Quay hotels are also just as attractive, with colonial-era architecture that you would rarely see anywhere else in Singapore. We’ll shortly talk about what you can do when in Clarke Quay.

Funnily, the best time to visit Clarke Quay is at night due to it being when the city comes to life. It is actually a preferred itinerary of shopping during the day, party at night for travellers who visit Singapore, and more often than not, they choose to shop at Funan Mall. The warehouses that used to be the center of trade have been transformed into worldwide famous clubs and restaurants. You can immerse yourself in music and dancing at two of the biggest Singapore nightclubs, Zouk and Attica, known for their banging Electronic Dance Music mixes. If you’re lucky, you can watch when they invite international DJs to play as well, so make sure you RSVP early. Another famous nightclub is F. Club, which plays more hip hop and R&B music rather than EDM. Club hopping is definitely popular among the people who come there if you want to experience Clarke Quay nightlife to its fullest. The parties in these clubs will last until late in the AM, and they are so close to each other which is convenient for party hopping. However, if you’re more into a relaxed vibe, you can visit Clarke Quay bars and restaurants that are just as good.

Want to explore international cuisines? Clarke Quay is an ideal place for you. You’d be surprised to know that some of the restaurants in this city serve Singapore’s best Japanese ramen, French pastry, Italian pasta, and many more signature dishes from all over the world. Being located on the riverside, the seafood in Clarke Quay is absolutely divine. We’ve talked about activities that you can do at night, but what about what you can do during the day, before maybe going to the Funan Mall? Well, the Singapore River is one of the main attractions in Clarke Quay. It is much more than just a scenic view because you can take boat tours along the river up to Boat Quay and Marina Bay. The river also has historical bridges such as the Clemenceau Bridge and Anderson Bridge. Thinking of doing something more exciting? Adrenaline lovers, you will love the G-Max Reverse Bungy, which straps you into a capsule and catapults you straight into the air.

Whether you’re looking to wind down after a day of exploring the city or making your way back from the nightclub after hours of dancing, you’ll want to treat yourself to a comfortable bed in one of the hotels near Funan Mall or in Clarke Quay. Next, we’ll have a quick look at some of the best hotels near Funan Mall so that you can plan your staycation Singapore moment even better.

They also have contemporary interiors accented with Oriental motifs and a cascading chandelier, making the atmosphere immensely sophisticated and elegant. The authentic Cantonese cuisine will pleasure your tastebuds, as they are uplifted with modern interpretations such as classic dim sum favorites and stellar main courses.

Looking for a nice restaurant for high tea? Carlton Hotel Singapore has that too! Tuxedo lets you choose from delicate French croissants for an indulgent breakfast or pick up baked breads for your room or to go. The cafe’s chic atmosphere lets you relax as you take your mid-day break with their light lunch specials. The aromatic barista brews and intricate latte art and exceptional decadent treats by their award-winning Pastry Team is an experience you won’t want to miss. Tuxedo’s signature specials include Tuxedo Cake, Red Velvet Cake, and the highly raved Carlton Chicken Pie. Last but not least, you must not miss out on dining in Shinji by Kanesaka. Shinji by Kanesaka is an extension of Chef Shinji Kanesaka, the 1 Michelin star Chef who is known for his Edo-style sushi restaurant that was first set up in Tokyo’s exclusive Ginza district. The philosophy under his dishes is simply a passionate desire to appreciate the age-old Japanese culinary traditions without compromising its integrity. Customers usually opt for the omakase menu, which is a menu selection that is entrusted entirely to the chef. It will be executed by a native Japanese team of artisan chefs led by Master Chef Koichiro Oshino.

In summary, Funan Mall is one of the oldest malls in Singapore that both locals and travellers treasure. It was heartbreaking for many when Funan Mall was demolished in 2016 instead of being reconstructed, as it is a go to for those who want to buy electronics or fix their electronic belongings. The hecticness and overcrowded Funan Mall may be a nightmare for some, but the homely tenants and good prices are worth it. For almost three years, locals had to face the fact that their designated IT mall was gone. The tenants either relocated or moved completely online. Many actually went into bankruptcy and stopped selling electronic items. That is why when the Funan Mall was revamped into a more stylish and futuristic mall without disregarding its ‘electronics’ identity, the entire nation was excited for it. There were even travellers from neighboring countries, such as Malaysia and Indonesia, who went to Singapore just to experience the reopening of Funan Mall.

There was nothing that could beat the nostalgia from when the doors were finally opened and the layout of the mall was somehow similar yet incredibly different at the same time. Visitors were excited to try all the digital features that the Funan Mall had to offer, from the one-click drive-thru shopping, robotic staff, and facial recognition access. The tenants who came back were also looking forward to how their business will expand with this new mall’s popularity. Although they weren’t sure it would serve well for the older generations, they believe that their loyal customers will still come back and buy their products and services. In addition, the mall had incorporated a space for visitors to try out various electronic products so that they know it's worth it.

Have you been to the newly renovated Funan yet? We’ve been working out of WeWork over the last month and have had a chance to explore the newly renovated space. With food options GALORE (it’s pretty amazing), we never go hungry and we’ve even manage to beautify and do personal errands during our lunch break. We highlight our top picks (although we say come and check out the food for yourself, there’s just too many options) on what to do in this action-packed mall. We also love the easy to navigate layout, the boutique feel (compared to other malls) and the variety of options, making it an easy spot to spend the day.

Live updates, san francisco sues oakland over new airport name that includes ‘san francisco’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

San Francisco on Thursday sued Oakland after officials there voted in favor of changing the name of the city’s airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, saying the change will cause confusion and is already affecting its airport financially.

Last week, the Board of Commissioners for the Port of Oakland voted unanimously to move forward with the name-change and scheduled a second vote for final approval on May 9.

San Francisco has sued Oakland after officials there voted in favor of changing the name of the city's airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport. San Francisco officials say the change will cause confusion and is already affecting its airport financially.

The airport is currently called Oakland International Airport.

“We had hoped Oakland would come to its senses, but their refusal to collaborate on an acceptable alternative name leaves us no choice but to file a lawsuit to protect SFO’s trademark,” San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu said in a statement.

San Francisco is asking the court to prevent Oakland airport from moving forward with its name-change and rule that the new name violates San Francisco International Airport’s trademark.

“The renaming plan appears intentionally designed to divert travelers who may be unfamiliar with Bay Area geography and lead them to believe OAK has a business relationship with SFO, which it does not,” Chiu said, adding that the renaming would be particularly confusing for international travelers who don’t speak or read English.

San Francisco is asking the court to prevent Oakland airport from moving forward with its name-change and rule that the new name violates San Francisco International Airport’s trademark.

Oakland airport officials said they plan to implement the name-change and defend their right to do so in court.

“OAK’s proposed renaming does not infringe upon SFO’s mark,” the Port of Oakland said in a statement.

“We will vigorously defend our right to claim our spot on the San Francisco Bay.”

An AR walkway, infinity mirror room and more at Love, Bonito’s largest store yet

Checked out the new Funan mall yet? If you weren’t one of the many who rushed down during their opening weekend (Jun 28-30), here’s one reason why you should.

The new Love, Bonito store at Funan is the local fashion brand’s third in Singapore and their largest yet. At over 6,000 sq ft, it’s larger than their 313@Somerset flagship. And with that size, comes plenty of space for bells and whistles that make shopping there such an experience.

, An AR walkway, infinity mirror room and more at Love, Bonito’s largest store yet

First, the cool stuff. Along their central corridor is an augmented reality-enabled walkway. Simply scan a QR code with your smartphone and you’ll be brought to a Facebook camera that erupts into colourful blooms when you point it at the walkway. Then there’s the infinity mirror room. Essentially a walk-in space with mirrors around you in a 180° spread, it’s the perfect spot for a glam shot for the ‘gram.

Actually, the entire pink pastel hued space is so photo-worthy that it’s hard not to snap away at everything. But it’s also the practical stuff that turns this store into an experience zone. The modular fitting rooms they’re known for, where you’re able to open up the dividers between them, makes its appearance here.

, An AR walkway, infinity mirror room and more at Love, Bonito’s largest store yet

Then there’s the new and supremely spacious VIP fitting rooms. Those in wheelchairs and those with prams will get priority access to these rooms. They are also used for those enlisting help from Love, Bonito stylists—it’s a new service they’re offering—so they can give their two cents in the fitting room with you.

There’s also a community space at the back of the store, where fashion, beauty, health and wellness events as well as thematic workshops will be held.

Need more reason to head down? Just for the month of July, a minimum spend of $120 will get you a free limited edition scarf. There are also Funan exclusive graphic tees ($23.90) themed around Love, Bonito’s values of confidence, community and change. Grab one while you can.

Love, Bonito Funan is located at #02-09, 107 North Bridge Rd.

In April 2020 — only a month or so into the COVID-19 pandemic — my wife and I were running out of things to do. The novelty of Zoom calls with friends was wearing off. We’d watched lots of movies and TV. We were itching to get out of our apartment, but with the virus still raging, we couldn’t risk being around other people. Then we had an idea: Why not go for a drive?

You are reading The Wild newsletter

Sign up to get expert tips on the best of Southern California's beaches, trails, parks, deserts, forests and mountains in your inbox every Thursday

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

For our first trip, we drove the length of Little Tujunga Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest. After that, we were hooked. In the ensuing months, we crisscrossed the Santa Monica Mountains and made trips into Los Padres National Forest and beyond.

A roadmap open on a table

My wife bought me a California road atlas, and it became part of our scenic drive ritual: We’d consult its pages for inspiration, looking for two-lane roads and state highways that squiggled through mountain ranges or meandered through deserts. After returning home, I’d highlight our route. Four years after our first drive, the atlas is full of highlights documenting our travels — and there’s still a lifetime’s worth of backroads we haven’t covered yet.

No matter where we go, each drive gives me a deeper appreciation for the incredible range of landscapes in Southern California. And these journeys have led to many rewarding discoveries, from out-of-the-way diners to new trailheads for hiking and biking.

A mountain path winds around mountains in the distance

If you’re tired of visiting the same places, it’s time to hit the road. These two trips — all within a three-hour drive of the city — will get you started.

Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument This route traverses winding mountain roads through Los Padres and spits you out near the southern entrance to Carrizo Plain — a vast preserve of native grassland and a hotspot for wildflowers (at least on some years ) and birdwatching . From Interstate 5, take Exit 205 and head west on Frazier Mountain Park Road. This two-lane road changes names several times as it ascends into the San Emigdio Mountains, passing forested slopes and epic canyon views along the way.

After about 42 miles, you’ll meet California 166. Take a right here and then a left on Soda Lake Road to enter Carrizo Plain National Monument. Drive northwest for 35 miles to the parking lot for the Soda Lake Trail, a short boardwalk that gets you up close to the park’s salt-crusted lake. If you plan ahead, you can also book a guided tour of Painted Rock, a sandstone outcrop with Native American rock art.

Hungry? Head back the way you came, take a right on California 166, and drive west 15 miles to the Cuyama Buckhorn , a renovated ’50s motel, restaurant and bar. The eatery’s Santa Maria-style tri-tip is superb, and if you grab a room, you can turn this scenic drive into a full weekend escape .

Volcan Mountain and Julian This route will take you to Julian , a mountain town famous for its apple orchards and delicious pies. From Interstate 15, take Exit 58 for California 79. Take a right on Pechanga Parkway and head south. The road becomes Pala Temecula Road and emerges into a wide canyon with mountains towering on either side. Take a left at Pala Mission Road and continue east on California 76, which hugs the San Luis Rey River before ascending more than 1,000 feet up a chaparral-covered ridgeline.

After some hairpin turns, the road levels off and skirts Lake Henshaw, a picturesque reservoir. Take a right on California 79, and after 10 miles, take a left on Wynola Road. Follow that road for about 3.5 miles, then take a left on Farmer Road to arrive at Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve. Stretch your legs on the Five Oaks Trail , a 1.2-mile path that ascends the western flank of Volcan Mountain and offers sweeping views of the orchards below.

With your appetite revved up, head south on Farmer Road into Julian and make a stop at the Julian Pie Co . Grab a well-deserved slice of apple pie and some apple cider and rest your feet at a picnic table while you chow down.

3 things to do

Dolphins swim beneath the surface of the water beyond a pier

1. Race plankton in Manhattan Beach In celebration of Earth Day, the Roundhouse Aquarium will hold a day full of educational activities inside and outside its facilities. Highlights include dolphin spotting, a fish feeding, crafts, games, a “shark shack” and, yes, plankton racing. The festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and go until 4 p.m. The event is free, but be sure to register ahead of time at roundhouseaquarium.org .

2. Go gardening in San Pedro Give back to the land by planting native species, removing weeds, mulching and watering the White Point Nature Preserve’s garden with the folks at Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You’ll also have the chance to enter a raffle and take a guided nature walk. As a bonus, refreshments will be provided by Starbucks to keep you cool and hydrated. The three-hour event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. All volunteers under age 16 should be accompanied by an adult, and all volunteers under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver at the event. Register at pvplc.com .

3. Stretch your legs on Venice Boulevard CicLAvia is back. And this time it’s shutting down a 5.75-mile stretch of Venice Boulevard that connects Palms, Mar Vista and Venice Beach for walkers, joggers, bikers, roller skaters, unicyclers, penny-farthings, pogo sticks — anything as long as it’s completely powered by humans. There will be three local hubs along the route where you’ll be able to partake in family-friendly activities, pump air into your bike’s tires, refill your water bottle and use the restroom. Be sure to reference CicLAvia’s digital map so you can scope out the local businesses you’d like to visit along the way. It all takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information about the event and the area it covers, visit ciclavia.org .

Klamath dam removal critic Willian Simpson II holds a handful of dead, dried-out fish

The Klamath River in Northern California has turned brown and muddy, but that’s a good thing. As Times writer Ian James reports , it’s a side effect of the largest dam removal project in history, which aims to restore the river to its natural state. Four dams are being removed along the Klamath, and the river is passing freely through tunnels in three of them, draining reservoirs and churning up an estimated 2.3 million tons of sediment that had settled along the bottom of those man-made lakes. Although the turbid water might look ugly, restoration advocates and tribal leaders see it as a sign of healing. The muck is passing out of the Klamath, and new life — everything from salmon heading upstream to native plant seedlings along the riverbanks — will soon take its place.

Bricks World LEGO Certified Store (Funan)

LEGO

Time Out says

Looking for more complex LEGO builds and elaborate structures? This official LEGO store in Funan Mall is the first adult-focused concept store in Singapore. Walk up to the front of the industrial-style store where the words 'Adults Welcome' greet you and feel free to browse the wide range of sets that will see build amazing structures and things like iconic buildings from different cities, F1 cars, Star Wars paraphernalia and even replicas of popular art pieces.

Unlike the standard LEGO sets for kids, these sets are generally more complex, and take longer to build – and it is intentional! Think of it as zen in a brick – most adult (and young adult too) builders have said that LEGO set building helps them find their flow and  focus singularly on a task, allowing their mind to rest. Instruction booklets are provided so don't be afraid to take up a challenge!

The concept store is also set to hold workshops and classes for hobbyists who want to challenge themselves more and improve in their craft.

New in town: Wayang — Virtual business opens 1st physical outlet serving customisable Indonesian rice meals in Funan Mall

Chloe The

Craving Indonesian cuisine in the Central Business District (CBD)? Look no further than the newly opened Wayang  in  Funan Mall !

Quite a quirky name, is it not? With the meaning of a theatrical performance by either puppets or people, Wayang can also be used as slang to describe someone as extremely dramatic. It is definitely a name one would not forget.

Wayang — Storefront

Before, Wayang was a virtual business, operating with only delivery available. As of 5 Apr 2023 , you can enjoy their delectable meals in person at their freshly opened physical store in Funan. Our Muslim friends need not worry, as Wayang is halal certified.

As Wayang focuses more on rice-based dishes, you can choose between 3 different types of rice and sambal , along with a wide selection of 17 different proteins to suit your palate. For the rice, the selection — White , Yellow (+S$1) or Lime Rice (+S$1) — is versatile to complement both the sambal and protein chosen.

Wayang — 3 rice selections

What is Indonesian cuisine without the beloved sambal ? To cater to different spice tolerances, Wayang provides Belacan Chilli  suitable for the spicy extreme, Green Chilli  for a lil’ kick and  Balinese Chilli  for a traditional flair.

Wayang — Ayam Titanium

However, the main star will no doubt be the protein. Chicken lovers will adore the Ayam Titanium (S$9.20) , while those who enjoy seafood have options like the  Blur Sotong (S$9.20)  or  Prawn Hub (S$9.50) . There are vegetarian options like the Tofuriffic (S$7.20) for specific dietary needs.

Wayang even offers unique, luxurious choices like the  Salted-Egg Crab Landing On You (S$13.20) . Thanks to their never ending puns, you may even have to choke back a laugh during your order.

Wayang has extended their old menu to include small snacks and drinks. Desserts like the Chocolate & Cheese Roti Bakar (S$7.50)  is a peculiar must try! Wayang is sure to attract a crowd, with local Indonesian food with modern tastes. For those who want to give a try, be sure to stop by Funan to check it out.

Order Delivery:   Deliveroo

Taobao's first physical store in South-east Asia opens in Funan

travel store funan

SINGAPORE - Chinese e-commerce platform Taobao has opened its first store in South-east Asia, in Funan mall, to cater to rising demand for its home furniture goods.

Called Taobao Store by Virmall, the shop is a partnership between Taobao and Virmall, a local firm that helps to curate and bring in products from merchants on Taobao.

Opened on Wednesday (Sept 4), the shop offers more than 300 products from furniture to kitchen appliances and clothes. About 80 per cent of the items are from the home and living category, the fastest-growing category in Singapore on Taobao.

The 6,000 sq ft store on Basement Two of Funan mall is about 10 times larger than Taobao's previous six-month pop-up at multi-label concept store NomadX in Plaza Singapura.

The opening of the Taobao store comes as competition in the e-commerce marketplace heats up, with home-grown shopping platform Shopee opening its new regional headquarters in Kent Ridge on Tuesday.

Taobao, which is under tech giant Alibaba, declined to reveal the revenue generated in Singapore in past years.

There are Taobao stores, such as pop-ups, in other countries.

Its Funan store offers a complimentary virtual reality (VR) service for shoppers to better visualise how a piece of furniture will fit into their homes.

While some large furniture pieces can be purchased only by scanning the item's QR code on the Taobao mobile app, a number of items, such as the Xiaomi 90 series 20-inch luggage ($108.80), are available for cash and carry at the store.

Shoppers can also send their online Taobao orders to the Funan store, instead of their homes, where they can pick up their orders at their convenience.

Ms Charlene Zhang, business development lead at Taobao Singapore, told The Straits Times it was a natural step for Taobao to set up a physical store in Singapore, following the positive feedback from previous pop-up showcases.

She said sales in the home and living category have been on the rise since Taobao started offering the option of sea shipping to Singapore in 2017, which allows for the delivery of bulkier furniture items.

"Typically home and living items are priced higher so shoppers may be a bit more apprehensive of buying big-ticket items, such as a sofa, online. Having a physical store allows them to see and touch before buying," she said.

Virmall's general manager Sky Chen said the store allows shoppers a chance to view more unique and well-made products not necessarily associated with Taobao's brand.

He said: "Over the years, many brands and merchants have grown with Taobao and are producing well-designed and good quality products, which customers outside of China might not realise."

As part of the store's opening celebrations, there will be flash deals starting from $3.90 this weekend. Taobao will hold its 99 Mega Sale on Sept 9 and 10, where shoppers can get free shipping for more than 999 items and other perks in store.
