Zipline

Rated "Excellent" on TripAdvisor

My daughter of 16 years old really wanted to do this. So I agreed after reading all the reviews because I was very terrified. After the first line I wanted to go back because I was too afraid. The staff was very very nice and patient, they offered to do it together with one of them. Gabriël was my hero and I liked it very much, at the end I also did the superman!!!! Thanks guys

It was a lot of fun, especially the two superman ziplines. For the Tarzan swing, don't look, just go for it. A few people psyched themselves out and missed out. It goes by quickly, theres very little waiting for the ziplines since they have everyone moving at all times. Went by almost too quickly.

Highly recommend the canopy tour. The Superman cable is absolutely amazing. It is likely the best flight simulation available with high speeds and birds eye views of the forest below. The staff is very nice and attentive.

Great ziplines and the superman was amazing. Did feel a bit rushed even though there wasn't a tour behind us. Guides were very good. Great price. Shuttle from hotel was good and on time. Would recommend.

The best canopy tour in Monteverde, Costa Rica

Everyone should visit Monteverde, the cloud forest in Costa Rica where you can deeply connect with nature. In fact, CNN recently named Monteverde as one of the 25 most beautiful places in the world, along with Ciudad Perdida in Colombia, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, and other wonders.

I love nature and I partake in ecotourism, so I’ve visited several adventure parks. I know that most people visit Monteverde in search of activities like zip line or canopy tours, which is why I wanted to put together a little guide about that in this blog. Based on my experience I can recommend 3 options, including the best zip line tour in Costa Rica .

The Best Canopy or Zip Line Tour Options in Monteverde, Costa Rica

tree top canopy tour monteverde

Canopy or zip line tours are very exciting, especially when you go to suitable places with great service. Essentially, zip lining involves gliding across one or more cables connected between trees, while observing natural riches from above, and feeling butterflies in your stomach from the speed and height.

Here below, I’ll tell you about 3 adventure parks in Monteverde that offer this activity.

3. 100% Adventure: Affordable Prices and a Mega-Tarzan Swing

Just being in Monteverde is a beautiful experience, so whichever park you go to, you’ll have a good time. The zip line or canopy circuit at 100% Adventure offers good service.

Nine canopy zip lines are crossed, in which 1 kilometer of those can be made in Superman position. One great attraction at 100% Adventure is the Mega-Tarzan Swing , which has become popular in adventure parks, but the one found here is slightly larger. There’s also a very good price-quality ratio here, as they have the most affordable deals. For all these reasons, 100% Adventure ranks third in my recommendations.

2. Sky Trek Monteverde: Low Impact Gondola Rides

This is one of the most famous adventure parks in Monteverde . Sky Trek Monteverde offers a good experience, especially for those who would like to go on a short gondola ride before doing the zip line or canopy circuit, which isn’t offered at other parks.

If you decide to visit this park, you will cross 8 cables and you won’t need to walk much throughout the tour. Their safety measures are impeccable, and the staff is very helpful. This park isn’t my first recommendation, because their prices are a bit higher. While they do have a gondola, they don’t offer a Tarzan Swing , which is an experience that shouldn’t be missed.

1. Selvatura Park: The Highest and Longest Zip Line in Monteverde

tree top canopy tour monteverde

At Selvatura Park, you can have a complete experience. As their slogan says, “all of the adventure in Monteverde can be found here”. The zip line or canopy tour circuit includes 13 cables, some of which are 180 metres high. The canopy tour can also be possible to do it in Tarzan Swing, and go across one of the zip lines in superman position.

The last cable, which you cross with another person, is more than a kilometre long and it’s really wonderful because you’re so high above the valley,” wrote a visitor on his blog, Lagarto Rojo.

Although I had enjoyed other zip line tours, none of them were as exciting as this one, especially because of how long the tour lasted, and the incredible views at that height. They also offered the best service.

In terms of quality-price ratio, Selvatura Park comes out ahead. For a lower price than the one offered by the previously mentioned park, you can enjoy the entire zip line or canopy circuit, plus a non-guided hike across the hanging bridges . I decided to pay a little bit more for the guide service, which was a great way to keep learning about Monteverde. I took some stunning selfies on those bridges, which were possibly the highest in the entire nature reserve.

The best part of this establishment is that they offer a variety of options to complement the zip line experience. There’s a herpetarium, hummingbird and butterfly gardens , and guided tours across the hanging bridges.

Everywhere we turn nowadays, it seems someone new is claiming to be a Costa Rica expert. Inside offices, travel agents and advisors “sell” the country without ever having stepped on Costa Rican soil. Outside, countless social media “influencers” fly in, make snap judgments, fly out, and taut their one-off experiences as the best. No wonder it’s so difficult for potential Costa Rica travelers like yourself to find trustworthy information and time-honored Costa Rica trip-planning advice! Thank goodness you found your way here. We’ve got what you need and deserve: help that’s based on firsthand knowledge, has been collected across a variety of experiences, and has been summarized as part of comparative analyses.

With respect to the Treetopia Park (formerly known as Sky Adventures Monteverde ), we’ve visited this park more times than we can remember. Monteverde is Ricky’s favorite destination in his homeland of Costa Rica, so we’ve found ourselves in the park on many personal vacations. We’ve also found our way to the park on business trips to perform site inspections as part of our corporate operations via our business, Pura Vida! eh? Inc. , and, because we’ve always enjoyed our time at the park, on three separate occasions it hosted our family reunions. Simply put, the park is a place we adore and never tire of visiting. Below are a few photos of our visits to the Treetopia Park over the years.

Treetopia Park Monteverde

If you keep coming across information about Sky Adventures online whenever you search for the Treetopia Park, or if you want to visit Sky Adventures Monteverde but keep getting forwarded to the Treetopia Park instead, rest assured, in either case, you’re where you’re supposed to be. Treetopia Park is the new name of the Sky Adventures Monteverde Park . Below is a brief summary of important park-related changes that have come into effect in recent years.

Until the end of 2022, Sky Adventures operated an adventure park in the La Fortuna region of Costa Rica, which was known as Sky Adventures Arenal , and an adventure park in the Monteverde region of Costa Rica, which was known as Sky Adventures Monteverde . Reservations for both parks were processed by the same team and the two parks shared a website. (The parks were governed by three siblings of the same Costa Rican family.) At the start of 2023, however, the two parks officially separated, and tour operations, including reservations and website management, were handled separately by each park. (A brother-and-sister team stayed with the park in Arenal while another brother took charge of the park in Monteverde.) Later in 2023, Sky Adventures Monteverde announced that their park, which had been managed by a group known as Grupo 415 since the split at the start of the year, would adopt a new name: the Treetopia Park . ( Grupo 415 is comprised of the kin of the brother who took charge of the park in Monteverde). Despite all of the changes, the majority of the Treetopia Park’s tour offerings would remain the same, except that the “Sky Tram” aerial tram would be renamed the “Tree Tram” aerial tram. (Note that at the La Fortuna site, the aerial tram continues to use the term “Sky Tram.”). It would take approximately six months for all of the Monteverde adventure park’s new Treetopia Park signage to replace the old Sky Adventures signage.

To date, the adventure park in Monteverde is known publicly as the Treetopia Park and it’s managed by Grupo 415 . In the La Fortuna region of Costa Rica, the brother-and-sister team manage the adventure park privately under the name Grupo Valverde but run it publicly under the name Sky Adventures . The park continues to operate under the name Sky Adventures Arenal . Both parks remain in the hands of members of the same Costa Rican family, but for legal and operational purposes, the parks are now unique corporate entities.

The Treetopia Park is best known for its original three tours and activities, which are often referred to as the classics :

  • The Tree Tram Aerial Tram , which is a slow-moving, gondola-resembling, cableway ride. A tour guide is required, and automatically provided, by the Treetopia Park with a reservation for this activity. A reservation is required to ride the tram.
  • The Sky Trek Canopy Zip-lining Tour , which entails gliding across multiple zipline cables situated above the cloud forest treetops. A tour guide is required, and is automatically provided, by the Treetopia Park with a reservation for this activity. A reservation is required to participate in the canopy tour.
  • The Sky Walk Hanging Bridges, which are a combination of hanging bridges (suspended high above the forest floor) and nature trails (along on the forest floor) that explore Monteverde’s cloud forest ecosystem. A tour guide is not required to explore the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges on your own. However, a tour guide can be provided by the Treetopia Park if you’d like to have one. A reservation is required to explore the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges , regardless of whether you want to explore the bridges with or without a tour guide.

Please see the Tree Tram Aerial Tram , Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour , and Sky Walk Hanging Bridges sections below for more information about each experience.

In addition to the classics, the Treetopia Park is currently putting the finishing touches on an all-new tree-climbing experience (known as the Arboreal Tour ) that has obstacle course components and a zipline cable that you ride on a bike.

The Treetopia Park ‘s Tree Tram Aerial Tram

Sky Adventures Monteverde Park

Unlike the scenery you’ll see at Sky Adventures Arenal , which includes views of the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal , the view you’ll get while riding the Tree Tram at the Treetopia Park in Monteverde is one of endless cloud forest canopy. Tree Tram rides are a great way to view Costa Rica’s lush landscape from above, and Monteverde promises beautiful scenes that are bursting with vibrant, varied shades of green.

At the Treetopia Park , you can ride the Tree Tram on its own or in combination with the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour . On its own, you’ll ride the tram up to the top of the cloud forest and down again, ending where you departed at the Treetopia Park ‘s operations center. As part of the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour , after riding the tram up to the top of the cloud forest, you’ll zipline down a series of cables on your return to the Treetopia Park ‘s operations center.

A one-way Tree Tram ride at the Treetopia Park lasts approximately 10 minutes , when counting from the moment the tram departs from the Treetopia Park ‘s operations center until it arrives at a platform at the top of the cloud forest.

If you reserve the Tree Tram ride only (i.e., if you do not plan to participate in the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour ), you’ll ride the tram both ways (to the top of the cloud forest and back down again). Once you reach the top of the cloud forest, you’ll be given roughly 30 minutes to explore the platform and short nature trail there. During that time, you can take in beautiful views of the cloud forest, snap photos, scan the forest canopy for birds and wildlife, and/or enjoy a treat or refreshment at the on-site cafe. If you choose to explore the trail, it will introduce you to flora and fauna native to the area, including a variety of plants, flowers, insects, amphibians, and reptiles, most notably ferns, orchids, torch flowers, spiders, and lizards. You may also hear the bellowing cries of territorial howler monkeys that reside around Monteverde. Once you return to the Tree Tram, you’ll spend approximately 10 minutes riding it back to the operations center. This second ride completes the approximate one-hour Tree Tram Aerial Tram experience.

If you experience the Tree Tram as part of the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour , note that you’ll only ride the tram once (to the top of the cloud forest), not back down again. Once you disembark at the platform at the top of the cloud forest, you’ll immediately begin the ziplining portion of the tour (you won’t hike the nature trail and/or visit the cafe), and you won’t return to (or ride) the tram again.

There is currently no minimum age limit or maximum weight limit imposed on individuals who are interested in riding the Tree Tram.

Tree Tram rides are family-friendly. What’s more, children (ages 0-5 years) are welcome to ride the Tree Tram in Monteverde for free with a paying adult.

The Tree Tram Aerial Tram compartments at the Treetopia Park are spacious and accessible to people with a variety of disabilities, including individuals who use walkers and/or wheelchairs. The platform at the top of the cloud forest, which boasts an incredible view of the cloud forest, is also wheelchair-accessible.

The Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Trek Canopy Zip-lining Tour

Sky Adventures Monteverde Park

Unlike some canopy ziplining tours in Costa Rica, which cut through forest, the Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour takes place above the forest canopy (i.e., above the treetops). More specifically, the tour zigzags over the top of the forest and provides a bird’s eye view of the treetops, clouds, and an endless sky.

Several canopy ziplining tours are offered in the Monteverde region, but the Treetopia Park’s Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour is the only one that utilizes a handlebar braking system . (Most other canopy tour operators use the traditional hand-braking system.) Although both braking methods are regarded as safe, the handlebar braking system requires you to jostle a set of metal handlebars back and forth to slow your speed. In contrast, the hand-braking system requires you to place gentle pressure on the zipline using a thick leather glove to slow your speed , a process that some travelers find daunting. A demonstration of how to use the handlebar braking system is provided at the start of the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour . The tour begins with one low-to-the-ground practice cable, so you can test your ziplining technique before embarking on the full tour. If, after experiencing the practice zipline cable, you don’t like the activity, opt out of experiencing the ziplining tour at that time. (Note that you may not be entitled to a tour refund given the last-minute change.) There’s no turning back once you proceed beyond the practice cable.

Treetopia Park Monteverde

The Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour is also the only canopy ziplining tour in the Monteverde area that automatically includes a complimentary aerial tram ride . (See above for more information about the tram experience.)

Lastly, only at the Treetopia Park will you find the Vertigo Drop , a thrilling free fall that’s an included—but entirely optional—component of the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour . (Note that the Vertigo Drop is not an included component of the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour run at the Sky Adventures Arenal Park ; if you want to experience it, you must reserve the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour at the Treetopia Park in Monteverde.) Participation in the Vertigo Drop requires you to jump off a tall metal structure while the tour guide slows your free fall until you gently reach a crash pad on the forest floor. The Vertigo Drop is a rush, but if you’d rather not feel it, you can reach the forest floor by descending the staircase to the side of the metal structure.

Treetopia Park Monteverde

After giving ziplining a go on the practice cable (see above for more information about that), the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour officially begins with a 10-minute Tree Tram Aerial Tram ride that will deliver you to a platform at the top of the cloud forest. From there, you’ll soar across nine additional zipline cables. (The Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour at the Treetopia Park has 10 cables in total, if you count the practice cable). Here’s how the various cables compare with one another according to their length, height, the average speed at which you’ll cross the cable, and the average amount of time that it takes to cross the cable:

Sky Trek Canopy Zip-lining Tour cable details for the Treetopia Park : Cable #1 (practice cable): 32 meters long / 15 meters high Cable #2: 400 meters long / 60 meters high / 44 kms per hour / 44 seconds Cable #3: 520 meters long / 60 meters high / 53 kms per hour / 45 seconds Cable #4: 420 meters long / 50 meters high / 35 kms per hour / 33 seconds Cable #5: 560 meters long / 38 meters high / 52 kms per hour / 38 seconds Cable #6: 320 meters long / 100 meters high / 54 kms per hour / 32 seconds Cable #7: 380 meters long / 70 meters high / 53 kms per hour / 32 seconds Cable #8: 420 meters long / 65 meters high / 64 kms per hour / 34 seconds Cable #9: 750 meters long / 60 meters high / 75 kms per hour / 41 seconds Cable #10: 70 meters long / 42 meters high / 42 kms per hour / 17 seconds Total zip-lining distance: 3,880 meters

It’s important to note that it isn’t possible to participate in the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour without experiencing the Tree Tram Aerial Tram . The Tree Tram ride is a required component of the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour because the tram delivers you to the ziplining tour’s second cable. If you do not want to ride the tram, you should not reserve the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour.

The duration of the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour varies from day to day due to group size, weather conditions, and other factors, but on average, the actual ziplining portion of the tour takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete. The entire tour experience, including the collection of ziplining equipment, the instructional briefing, the one-way Tree Tram ride, and the ziplining portion of the tour takes roughly 2-2.5 hours to complete . This estimate excludes any extra time required to travel between the Treetopia Park and downtown Santa Elena (an approximate 10-minute drive from the Treetopia Park) and/or area hotels before the tour begins and after the tour wraps up. It also excludes the buffer time of 15 minutes that you’re expected to arrive at the Treetopia Park prior to participating in any one of their tours.

Years ago, Sky Adventures (the operation that previously oversaw the park that’s now known as the Treetopia Park ) maintained that their minimum age limit for participation in the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour was 12 years old. Then, they swapped their minimum age limit to a minimum height limit (1.2 meters tall). In 2017, Sky Adventures announced that children as young as 5 years old would be allowed to participate because they obtained equipment that was suitable for children weighing 10-40 kilograms. Despite the park changing names, 5 years old remains the current minimum age limit for Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour participants.

The current maximum weight limit for participation in the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour is 300 lbs. Individuals who exceed the maximum weight limit will be evaluated by the Treetopia Park ‘s technical staff according to their height and physical condition to determine eligibility for tour participation.

The Treetopia Park ‘s Sky Walk Hanging Bridges

best hanging bridges in Costa Rica

In stark contrast to the Treetopia Park ‘s Tree Tram Aerial Tram and Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour , both of which invite participants to spy on the cloud forest from above, the park’s Sky Walk Hanging Bridges provide a unique opportunity to explore Costa Rica’s cloud forest from within.

More specifically, if you visit the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges , you’ll stroll through roughly 2.5-kilometers of dense, secondary forest amid much of the biodiversity that Costa Rica (and the Monteverde region in particular) is known for. Spotting and/or hearing fauna along the walk is common; during our visits, we regularly see monkeys playing in the trees and climbing on the cables that support the bridges. Although you’ll cover plenty of solid ground as you traverse the park’s nature trails , most impressive are the long, metal hanging bridges that are suspended high above the forest floor . You’ll be amazed by the majestic beauty of Monteverde’s deep and verdant cloud forest as you make your way across each bridge, completely immersing yourself in nature.

At the Treetopia Park , you can explore the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges on your own (i.e., without a tour guide), as a standalone guided tour (i.e., with a tour guide), or as part of a combo tour (i.e., with or without a tour guide, and in combination with one or more of the Treetopia Park ‘s other on-site activities). Combo tour options include coupling the hanging bridges experience with either the Tree Tram Aerial Tram or the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour . Note that because the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour automatically includes a one-way tram ride (see above for details), if you reserve a combo tour that joins the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges with the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour , you’ll get the Tree Tram ride too.

The start of the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges experience requires hikers to decide between the “Long Walk” or the “Short Walk.” Here’s what you should know about both routes before choosing either one.

The Long Walk vs. the Short Walk

The 2.5-kilometer long walk is the Treetopia Park ‘s complete hanging bridges circuit. It’s a circular trail that departs from the Treetopia Park ‘s operations center and loops around the back of the park before returning to the trailhead. In contrast, the short walk is only a portion (roughly half) of the long walk. It, too, is a circular trail that departs from the operations center. It forms a smaller loop within the larger loop that forms the long walk. The two trails (i.e., the long walk and the short walk) overlap in places. If you complete the long walk’s full course, you’ll complete the short walk as part of the journey.

The long walk covers the entirety of the park. It not only provides a longer walk, it also provides access to a part of the park that’s the least visited and is the most likely to provide wildlife-spotting opportunities. The long walk also provides a more difficult hike, not only because you’ll cover a greater distance than the distance traveled during the short walk, but because the long walk has more inclines and declines. In contrast, the short walk minimizes hike duration and difficulty. The short walk is your best option if your time is limited and/or you’d prefer to explore the park’s easiest course.

If you take the long walk, you’ll find that the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges at the Treetopia Park in Monteverde are comprised of six hanging bridges in total. Here’s how the various hanging bridges compare with one another according to bridge length and height:

Sky Walk Hanging Bridge details for the Treetopia Park Bridge #1: 66 meters long / 15 meters high Bridge #2: 122 meters long / 49 meters high Bridge #3: 114 meters long / 17 meters high Bridge #4: 125 meters long / 36 meters high Bridge #5: 236 meters long / 50 meters high Bridge #6: 48 meters long / 15 meters high Total hanging bridges distance: 711 meters

If you take the short walk, you’ll encounter 4 hanging bridges in total. Specifically, you’ll cross Bridge #3, Bridge #4, Bridge #5, and Bridge #6 detailed above.

It’s easy to miss the long walk’s 6th bridge. Here’s why and how you can avoid doing so.

Though the trail that’s trekked during the long walk forms a loop, a section of the trail splits into two paths at one point, leading hikers in different, albeit parallel, directions for several meters. Further up the trail, the two split paths reconnect, so regardless of which path you choose to follow, it will return you to the long walk’s loop. It’s important to know that each of the two paths have a hanging bridge of their own, which represent two of the Treetopia Park ‘s six hanging bridges (Bridge #5 and Bridge #6). Many travelers who complete the long walk’s full loop cross only five hanging bridges in total because they explore only one of the two paths encountered when the trail splits (i.e., they cross either Bridge #5 or Bridge #6, not both).

In order to cross all six hanging bridges in the park, first you’ll need to choose the long walk, not the short walk. When you encounter the fork in the trail after you cross Bridge #4, choose one of the two paths that you’re presented with and proceed to cross that path’s hanging bridge (the path to the left leads to Bridge #5 and the path to the right leads to Bridge #6; both paths eventually lead back to the trailhead). Then, backtrack along the same path, retracing your steps over the hanging bridge you crossed moments before, and return to the fork in the road. From there, take the other path, cross over its hanging bridge, and continue on your way.

A common question we receive about the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges (and hanging bridges is general, regardless of where they’re located in Costa Rica) is whether the bridges move and/or sway when people cross them. The quick answer to this questions is: “Yes, the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges move when you walk across them.” The more elaborate answer to the question is: “Yes, the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges move slightly when you walk across them, but they don’t sway greatly from side to side as you may envision a rope bridge doing. What you’re most likely to feel when you walk across a hanging bridge is a teetering beneath your feet as the bridge’s metal floor panels adjust to your footsteps.”

To best minimize movement as you cross a hanging bridge, walk in the middle of the bridge to avoid shifting your weight to either side. Hold onto both sides of the bridge with your hands for support (again, to avoid shifting your weight to one side if you happen to lose your balance when you walk), and walk slowly. The faster you walk, the more the metal floor panels will teeter from side to side. If possible, don’t cross a hanging bridge when other people are on it. The steps of hikers at the opposite end of the bridge can cause the entire bridge to move, so sometimes waiting until they’ve fully crossed the bridge can help your journey feel less wobbly.

There is currently no minimum age requirement or maximum weight limit imposed on individuals who are interested in exploring the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges at the Treetopia Park.

Exploring the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges is a family-friendly activity. If you’ll be traveling with kids, it’s important to know that children (ages 0-5 years) are welcome to explore the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges at the Treetopia Park for free with a paying adult.

Unfortunately, given the rugged terrain of the nature trails, the Sky Walk Hanging Bridges at the Treetopia Park are not wheelchair-accessible.

The Treetopia Park ‘s other tours and attractions

The treetopia park ‘s arboreal tour.

Less popular than the Treetopia Park ‘s tram, ziplining tour, and hanging bridges is its Arboreal Tour . Previously, the Arboreal Tour was only a tree-climbing tour, but construction is underway to transform the activity into a mash-up of tree-climbing, obstacle course, and bike zipline experiences. When complete, the Arboreal Tour will be available to reserve on its own or as part of a combo tour that includes one or more of the Treetopia Park ‘s classic activities.

The Treetopia Park ‘s Operations Center (parking, lockers, and a souvenir shop)

The operations center at the Treetopia Park is a modern facility complete with a comfortable lobby, a well-stocked souvenir store, and lockers that are free to use by tour participants. There’s also a large parking lot with plenty of space for rental cars. (Parking is free.)

The Treetopia Park ‘s restaurant

The only place to eat at the Treetopia Park is the Hard Frog Cafe restaurant. Typical Costa Rican food is served. Most of the Treetopia Park ‘s tours have an option to add lunch at an extra charge , if you’d like to prearrange the meal with your tour.

tree top canopy tour monteverde

As part of the Sky Trek Canopy Ziplining Tour , you’ll have an opportunity to purchase photos and/or videos of your tour experience upon tour completion. If you’d rather capture your own tour footage, you’re only permitted to do so using GoPro -style action cameras. GoPro cameras and accessories are available to rent, subject to availability, at the Treetopia Park for a fee.

If you won’t have access to a rental car and therefore won’t be able to drive yourself to/from the Treetopia Park , you can elect to add the park’s own round-trip transportation service (roughly $10.00 plus tax per person) to your tour reservation. Like reservations for tours, reservations for transportation services are required .

The drive from the center of Santa Elena (Monteverde’s downtown core) to the Treetopia Park takes approximately 10 minutes. Half of the drive is conducted on paved roads (roads #606 and #619) and the other half is conducted on a slightly rougher, unnamed road where stones and potholes are common. (The unnamed road leads to the entrance of the Treetopia Park , and beyond it, the entrances to the Selvatura Park and the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Biological Reserve ). Although having a 4×4 vehicle is an advantage, one is not required to reach the Treetopia Park from within the Santa Elena/Monteverde region.

The 5 Best Places to Go Zip Lining in Monteverde, Costa Rica

M onteverde, Costa Rica is one of the most popular zip-lining destinations in the country. This area consists of a dense cloud forest filled with unique flora and fauna. A zip-lining tour here will take you soaring over the lush ecosystem with an aerial view.

We have gone zip lining in Monteverde several times. And, in our opinion, it is the best place in the country to enjoy this activity. We created this guide to give you info on the best zip-lining tours based on your budget and your desired thrill level, let you know what you can expect, and give you advice on how to have the best overall experience.

So, let’s get to planning your Monteverde zip-lining adventure!

Zip Lining Lingo

Before I go into all the different ziplining options, you first need to know about lingo. That way you will have a better understanding of what I am talking about and can easily book the best adventure for your thrill level.

Platform:  OK this one is kind of obvious. The platform is where you stand before you zip. A guide will be at each platform while you zip line. They will hook you up to the cable and tell you when you are secure and can jump.

Cable:  Cable is the line that you are attached to when zipping from one platform to the other. The length of the zip line cable will vary throughout your tour.

Tarzan Swing:  A Tarzan swing is basically a rope swing from a high platform. Don’t worry, you are harnessed in. The initial drop may take your breath away, but then it is very exhilarating!

Superman Swing:  A Superman swing is when you go zip lining while lying down and looking out over the jungle below. It may seem a bit scary, but the view is definitely amazing! In the picture above you can see my dad being daring and trying out the Superman ziplines in Monteverde.

Rappeling:  Rappeling is when you are attached to a cable and go down the side of a cliff face. In Costa Rica, a lot of the rappelling is done down high waterfalls. This is a popular activity for all you adventure lovers.

Hanging Bridges:  Hanging bridges consist of nature trails and suspension bridges that you can walk over. These bridges vary in length and height but they can guarantee a great view! A lot of zip lining parks also have a section of hanging bridges.

Canopy Tour:  A canopy tour is just what they sometimes call the zip lining tour in Costa Rica. After all, you are getting an overhead tour of the canopy.

Aerial Tram:  An aerial tram is basically like a gondola that takes you up to a higher elevation. This is a great way to get a bird’s eye view of the landscape below.

There are several options for your Monteverde zip line tour. Let’s go through all the best places to find the perfect one for you based on thrill level.

Selvatura Adventure Park

Selvatura is one of the most popular canopy tour parks in Monteverde. It is a good place if it is your first time zip lining and for families with children. We have always had a great experience here.

Number of Platforms

There are 13 cables with a total of 2.2 miles of zip lining. The experience here also includes the option to try a Tarzan swing. For an additional cost you can add a Superman style experience on the last cable.

The Selvatura property has:

A Restaurant:  Serves soups, salads, sandwiches, mains, and desserts

Lockers:  Free to use

and clean restrooms

Other Things to Do

You can add on the option to enjoy…

A Sloth Sanctuary:  You can add a visit to the sloth sanctuary to your Selvatura experience. The sanctuary houses 20 sloths that have been rescued from poachers, habitat destruction, illness, and accidents.

Reptile and Amphibian Exhibition:  For an extra fee you can visit this exhibition. Here you can see lizards, snakes, and frogs, in Selvatura’s custom-built terrariums.

Butterfly Garden:  For an additional fee you can visit the butterfly garden. This facility is home to more than 30 species of Costa Rican butterflies.

Treetop Walkways:  We suggest adding the hanging bridge park to your experience at Selvatura. This consists of 1.9-mile trail through the cloud forest trails. There are 8 bridges ranging from 170ft up to an amazing 560ft in length. You can get some of the most beautiful views of the area from here.

Selvatura has a variety of package options. It is best to check  their website  and find which package is best for you and your travel companions.

Their most comprehensive package is the  All-Day Package . This includes:

  • Canopy Tour
  • Treetop Walkways (Guide not included)
  • The Sloth Sanctuary
  • Butterfly Garden
  • Reptile and Amphibian Exhibition

However, you can also arrange a basic package with just zip lining if you prefer.

Families, first-time zip liners

Children over the age of 4 are able to participate in a zipline tour here.

Transportation

Free transportation from your hotel and back within downtown Monteverde is included.

For more information and to reserve ahead of time you can check out  the Selvatura Park website here .

Booking Your Adventure

The best way to book this is directly through the Selvatura website. They offer the best rates and package varieties. Keep in mind that they allow free cancellation up to 72 hours before your tour.

It is possible to book this activity on Viator. Viator is typically our preferred way to book tours in Costa Rica. However, since Selvatura offers transportation, has a good cancellation policy, and has a secure on-site booking system; it is best to book directly on their site.

Treetopia Park Monteverde

Treetopia Park used to be called Sky Adventures Monteverde. So, if you see reviews for Sky Adventures or Sky Trek somewhere, they are talking about the same place. They also have. allocation in La Fortuna which kept the original name.

I believe it is still run by the same amazing company, just with a new name and branding.

Treetopia stands out as a great place to zip line because of their close attention to the guest experience.

For example, they have an effortless braking system that doesn’t require you to use your hand, they pride themselves in safety, and consider themselves a family-friendly park.

7 cables ranging from 460 to 2460 feet in length with a total distance of 1.9 miles.

There is a on-site restaurant and cafe, restrooms, and free lockers for guests to use.

This place is super fun and has different experiences than you can have at any other park. Besides zip lining, it is also possible to book an adventure that includes:

Hanging Bridges (Skywalk) : You can visit the hanging bridges with a guide or on your own. This bridge walk consists of 6 suspension bridges, ranging from 157 to 774 feet. In total, it is a 1.7-mile trail.

Cableway (Treetram) : The cableway is a gondola-like ride up to an elevated point with a guide. Here you can enjoy sweeping views of the cloud forest canopy and learn about the surrounding environment.

Tree Climbing : They also offer a tree climbing adventure. You will get to climb up 5 different trees while harnessed in for safety. At the top, you will get to jump in a controlled free fall descent.

Treetopia offers the chance to customize your experience exactly as you would like. Check out their  Build Your Bundle page  for more info.

Families that are looking for a fun and safe adventure. Children over the age of 5 are able to participate in zip lining here.

The shuttle service from Monteverde area hotels is not included. However, it can be added on for $10 per person roundtrip.

Additionally, there is a large parking lot that is available free of charge if you have a rental car. The lot is secure, but please don’t leave anything of value in your vehicle just in case.

The best way to book this activity is directly through the Treetopia website. They have a secure booking platform. You can cancel your reservation up to 48 hours before your tour.

100% Aventura

Aventura Adventure Park  is perfect for all of you who are looking for a more extreme adventure.

10 cables (2 are Superman cables), a hammock bridge, one rappel, and one ride on the Tarzan swing. This place is home to the longest zipline in Costa Rica at 5220 ft (1590 m).

100% Aventura also offers a hanging bridge park with guided tours. This consists of about two miles of trails with 8 hanging bridges.

For this experience, we suggest booking through Viator. The price on Viator is the same as directly on their website.

However, with Viator, you have the added bonus of being able to cancel for free up to 24 hours in advance.

Note that transportation is not included. You will need to drive to the park yourself.

Check Availability and Book Your 100% Aventure Experience

Extremo Park

This is the best place for all of you looking for an extremely thrilling zip-lining experience. If this is your first-time zip lining and you are a bit wimpy about heights, this is probably not the place for you.

Number of Platforms:

This zip line experience includes some extreme activities that none of the other parks have.

There are; 11 cables, one Tarzan swing, one rappel, one Subterranean Superman Tunnel, and one aerial Superman.

The cables total over 2.5 miles in length, making it the longest canopy in Costa Rica.

They also offer horseback riding tours and wildlife night tours.

For this experience, we suggest booking directly through the Monteverde Extremo website.

Check Availability and Book Your Tour

The Original Canopy Tour

The zip lining experience.

You will start your trip with a zipline tour over the lush Monteverde canopy.

Next, you will get to rappel 150 feet down to the forest floor.

A ladder system through the middle of a tree will bring you back up into the treetops. Then, you have the option of enjoying a thrilling Tarzan swing free-fall experience.

This adventure includes transportation from your Monteverde area hotel. All you need to do is input your pickup location at checkout.

I suggest booking this activity through Viator. It has amazing reviews and is a well-established company, but their website is not very well designed or updated. Viator seems to be their main way of making reservations.

Map of the Zip Lining Parks

People often get confused because some things in Monteverde are listed as being in Santa Elena.

Monteverde and Santa Elena are basically the same place.

Monteverde is the overall area, Santa Elena is the name of the main town. So, people use both names somewhat interchangeably.

Here is a map of all the zip line parks to give you a better understanding of their locations.

What to Bring and Wear

Here is everything we suggest bring and wearing on your canopy tour experience.

What to Wear

  • A rain jacket
  • Lightweight pants : I don’t recommend shorts because they aren’t the best with the harness. I usually opt for sports leggings, but breathable hiking pants would also be good.
  • A breathable shirt : Usually it’s a bit cool in Monteverde so I usually go for a long sleeve shirt.
  • Close-toed shoes : I usually go for Keen shoes, but sneakers or hiking boots would also be fine. I find that the more lightweight  footwear  the more comfortable your feet will be for this adventure.

Keep in mind that you will be wearing a helmet. So, ladies, don’t put your hair up nicely that day.

What to Bring

Most places have lockers for free or to rent for a small fee. We suggest bringing…

  • A change of clothes : If you would like to go do something else after. Plus, you may get wet if it is a rainy day and want to change.
  • A towel : It might not be necessary, but if its raining a lot you might want to dry off. We like  microfiber towels  for Costa Rica because they can easily fit in your luggage.
  • An I.D. : Some places ask for it when you sign safety waiver forms. I usually just bring a photocopy of my passport and leave the original in my hotel safe.
  • A full water bottle : You can not bring this while zip lining, but it is nice to hydrate with a  full waterbottle  once your adventure is done.
  • A Dry Bag : We love our  dry bag backpack  for all our adventures in Costa Rica. But, it is especially great in Monteverde where there is always some rain.

Our Personal Experience Zip Lining in Monteverde

We have gone zip lining here a few times, but I would like to share our first experience to give you a bit more info on what you can expect.

We went zip lining in Monteverde while traveling with a large group of our family and friends after our wedding. In total there were 13 of us looking to tackle a zip lining adventure.

So, the day before our Monteverde canopy tour adventure we all sat down and chose our zip line park of choice. The owner of our hotel strongly recommended Selvatura Park for beginners and Extremo Park for more action.

In the end, all the Germans (except for Thomas who stuck with me) chose Extremo Park and the US crew all chose Selvatura Park. That should tell you something about the adventure level of the Germans vs. the people from the US. 😉

The next day we woke up early to wait for our free transportation to the parks. We opted to go zip lining around 9am so that we could beat the crowds and also so we would still have the rest of our day to do other things.

The buses picked us up about an hour before our scheduled zip lining launch time (probably not the correct terminology haha). This allowed us plenty of time to pick up other zipliners, drive the 30 minutes to the park, and gear up.

Once we arrived at Selvetura we checked in at the front desk. It was there that they asked us if anyone in our group wanted to try the Superman swing for the final cable for a small extra charge. Thomas and my dad both opted to pay the additional fee for the Superman swing.

Next, we put our stuff in the free lockers and headed to the gear room. Oh, and we made sure to use the bathroom one last time before we got our gear on. We were then given hard hats, gloves, and harnesses which a Selvetura employee helped us put on.

Then we were off! We had a short hike to where the first platform was, listened to instructions on the safety measures, and tried to shake our nerves.

The first cable was really short and was meant to give you a little introduction into what you are doing.

After that, the cables got longer. I liked the longer cables because it gave us a chance to really enjoy the spectacular views.

There were also some cables that you could do as a couple.

There was also one in which there were two cables next to each other that you could do as two couples racing.

Then we came to the Tarzan swing. My dad, one cousin, and I all sat this one out. However, the rest of our group went for it. It was so fun to watch everyone’s reactions as they jumped. I’ve never heard my sister scream like she did as she had her free fall from the platform.

We all had a lot of fun and felt completely safe and secure the entire time. The tour guides were also excellent. They had fun with it but were very professional as well. I highly recommend going  ziplining in Monteverde at Selvetura . You’ll have a blast!

When we reunited with the German crew they had nothing but great things to say about Extremo Park as well. However, I’m happy I stuck with Selvetura because some of the things they talked about seemed a bit above my thrill level at that time.

So, in my opinion, there is no “best option” for a ziplining tour here. All of the places I listed are great. Instead, you should choose your adventure based on your personal needs.

What to Know Before Zip Lining

  • Tipping is not required , but if you have a really good experience with a particular guide, feel free to give them a small tip in US dollars or Costa Rican colones.
  • Spanish is the main language  in Costa Rica, but don’t worry, the guides at all the main zip lining places will speak English.
  • Keep in mind that the motto for life here is “ Pura Vida ”. This is used to mean “everything is good.” However, it also translates into the lifestyle. Things sometimes run a better slower and more relaxed than you might be used to.
  • If your plans are already set, it’s a good idea to book your canopy tour ahead of time. In the rainy season you will have no problem booking your zip line adventure the night before but during the dry season (end of December until mid-May) things can book out ahead of time. Just be warned that some of the companies don’t have any cancellation policy.
  • We suggest booking your zip lining adventure for the morning. These parks fill up later in the day.
  • All of the companies I listed are very reputable and have great safety records. However, if something doesn’t feel safe or right to you, always trust your instincts. There is no shame in bowing out of an activity if you don’t feel comfortable. Along with that, always check everything quickly yourself. The guides are good, but it is always best to double check that they hooked you up properly.
  • Most of these places allow young kids to participate as well. Smaller children will usually be harnessed in with an adult or with the guide. Each place has a different minimum age limit.
  • Some of the adventure parks have a maximum weight limit. This is typically about 250 to 300 pounds.

What to Do After

There are so many fun things to do in Monteverde after your zipline experience! Some of the most popular activities are…

Visit the Ficus Tree : This is a fun FREE activity.  Head to this spot on Google Maps  and walk into the woods until you see this massive ficus tree.

In the past, you could climb all the way to the top, but I guess it is a bit of a safety risk. Now you can only climb up a bit and they blocked the rest with concrete.

Hike at Santa Elena Reserve:  The  La Reserva Bosque Nuboso Santa Elena  is a private reserve with hiking trails. This is a great way to enjoy the cloud forest from the forest floor. It is located next to a lot of the zip-lining parks. Find out more here.

Take a Wildlife Night Tour:  These tours are great for seeing night active wildlife with an experienced naturalist guide. This guided tour includes the use of a headlamp and sometimes includes transportation from your Monteverde area hotel. You can find out more with our  guide to Monteverde night tours .

In conclusion, Monteverde is the perfect place to enjoy a Costa Rican zip lining adventure. The cloud forest environment is unique and beautiful.

Monteverde, Costa Rica is a cloud forest town that is perfect for adventure and nature exploration. One of the best way to experience this unique jungle canopy is with a zip lining tour. Here are the best options.

  • Tours & Activities

Climb a Giant Fig Tree

Climb a Giant Fig Tree

Scale a hollow fig tree to heights of 40m / 131ft

The tree is 131 ft (40 m) tall and is located just 5 minutes from the initial meeting point. There are multiple ways to ascend and descent the tree, but everybody will wear a safety harness for all routes.

There are multiple options to go up: climb up the middle of the tree, ascend the metal bars on the exterior, or simply haul yourself up one of the dangling ropes - this last option is best left to the fit. If you are ready to come back down again, there are multiple options as well: descend through the hollow tree or rappel down the outside of the tree. For the last one, you should have some bravery, but it is definitely worth it.
