Flight was fine overall. What you would expect from economy seats. I did appreciate the amenities (eyemask, earplugs, small toothbrush and toothpaste, thin socks).

Good staff, good intent, decent entertainment. More seat space would always be of benefit

More facilities to transport to the gates......felt too much walking distance

No towels or tissue and chocolate and mint provided before arrival

Just happy I flew Qatar Airways awesome no wonder they are #1 in the world right now! The food was just delicious, very courteous, professional crew.

They made us deliberate waste time by holding our passports and boarding passes making us miss the flight

It was a really long flight from Doha to Philadelphia and it was overall a good one. The one area that I would comment on is that there is a lot of single-use plastic and disposables in the meal service for American Airlines. It would be great to see more circular options in the meal service to reduce the amount of waste.

Suddenly Flight has been change by Qatar and there’s no information is there of us from Bom to Doha and counter person is behaving like Qatar owner next I will not buy Qatar and I will not suggest anyone to fly in Qatar

Fantastic, the 787-9 is a very beautifully designed plane and it was a pleasure to fly in the Qsuite. The suite did feel slightly smaller than the 777 variant, and the suite door also felt smaller, as I felt more exposed as passengers and crew walked past. Food was too notch, and the service was fantastic. I wish they’d enforce boarding zones more effectively, but otherwise they did really well.

From Montreal to Doha , we habe two complaints : 1) They want to charge for Seat Selection, claiming that the Class of ticket bought on Kayak did not cover seat selection. It such a penny pinching rule, I told them, since we paid almost $20,000 our 3 tickets , that rule should never exist. Also I reserved my tickets so many months ahead, I expected they will naturally put the family together or move somebody else to keep our family seating together. I filed a complaint, and NOBODY ANSWERED. 2) In Montreal, Qatar has an arrangement with the National Bank Lounge. It was so overcrowded and the Lounge is so bad in terms of service and food, amenities etc... The WORST lounge . Why Qatar not have another arrangement their Business Class clients in Montreal. The Air France KLM Lounger is better, the Air Canada Lounge is better. Qatar should send somebody to take a look ! Joseph Chung

Liked leg room Disliked unable to book to sit with my family on same flight without paying extra

Long way to improve. Toilets not working. Bad handling when flight was canceled

The business class experience is fantastic. The crew were polite but often unavailable even when I tried to call them! I even found myself bringing my used dishes and cutlery up to the crew because no one had come to collect it after over an hour.

1st time with. Etihad Airways and it was amazing from check in to crew. Great flight.

It has been a couple of years since I flew with Etihad last, after having a unpleasant experience with them coming out of the pandemic. I can say that the experience has uplifted, but I can’t really rate the service. At Barcelona airport the service was great, with their dedicated Etihad staff very helpful. The onboard experience wasn’t great, not very personalised and it really makes sense why Etihad doesn’t feature in the top 10 2023 Skytrax awards. The crew just seemed to be inattentive and almost absent from the cabin. I felt that I had to keep getting their attention. Even after I’d finished my meal, an hour went by before I had to call them to clear the tray/plate etc.

Crew were very polite and quicker in service. Excellent cooling, comfortable seats and tasty food served

In my opinion, Etihad Airways is a first rate airline except for one important element. On the day before my return flights, when I chose my seats on the Etihad website I was charged an additional $55 (US) in order to sit on the aisle. I was not at all happy about this additional "hidden" charge and I felt cheated.

The staff was kind and polite, but it was very very hot and no ways to have some fresh air.it would be also be nice to have more time to sleep, since it was a night flight

My wife and I were upgraded to Business Class on our Dublin-Abu-Dhabi flight on the 22nd of January. Being served by "Mariyan" (not too sure about her name, she's from Tunisia) was the real highlight of our flight, she deserves to be working with etihad. We are looking forward to the next upgrade as we are flying back to Dublin on February 01, 2024. If I am not mistaken we have just reached GOLD status as Etihad Guests.

Eine Toilette der Business Class war gesperrt und somit nicht benutzbar.

No Wi-Fi 50% of headphones handed out do not work. Otherwise pleasant.

Very nice staff. organized check in and good food. Bit cramped and tired looking plane inside

Was so surprised that for a short flight we were served a sandwich lunch

I didn’t like anything. I fly about 40 times per year and this is by far the worst airline I’ve even been on.

In business class and attendants acted like bothering them when asking for water. Which they didn’t even offer at all during the flight.

Worst flying experience ever. Both kids fell sick from food afterwards. In flight Service was missing. Same food served for all meals and that too stale which made us sick.

I had bad experience, this flight from Amman to Detroit was delayed for 40 hours!!!! The staff are rude & the food was not good at all.

I had bad experience, the first flight was delayed for 4 hours & the second flight was delayed for 40 hours!!!!! The staff on the flight from Amman to Detroit are rude . The food was not good at all.

Regarding the boarding: it needs more efforts to make it more convenient

Entertainment content is outdated. Food; I chose the chicken meal with rice, I would like to know the thought process of serving rice and chicken to be eaten with only a fork?! I don't eat spicy food for health reasons, I found out that the rice is very spicy after the first bite, so I didn't eat.

Help! Qatar Airways Denied Us Boarding Because of a Broken Link.

A woman and her Chinese-born son were set to return to China for the first time since the pandemic, but their airline would not let them fly without filling out a health form they could not access.

An illustration shows a QR code against a blue background with a hand reaching out of the code.

By Seth Kugel

Dear Tripped Up,

I am a single American mother living in Jordan and working for the United Nations. In September 2019, I adopted my then 5-year-old son from China, and promised him we would return to visit his country every year. But the pandemic broke out. When China finally reopened to tourists in 2023, we got visas and booked a July flight to Beijing via Doha on Qatar Airways, paying about $1,400 total. My now 9-year-old had worked hard to maintain his language and was excited, but nervous. At that time, the Chinese government required passengers to fill out a “Health Declaration Form” in advance or upon arrival. The link on the Qatar Airways website was broken, but I confirmed online and with friends who had recently traveled to China that I could fill it out upon arrival. At the airport, Qatar Airways disagreed, and when I once again couldn’t get the form to work, we were denied boarding. My son collapsed on the airport floor, sobbing. I rebooked for the next day, and we flew to Beijing via Istanbul on Royal Jordanian and China Southern for $1,882. Neither airline requested to see the QR code showing my form had been approved: All passengers upon arrival were made to fill out new forms. Qatar Airways mostly refunded the tickets — we received $1,185 — but refused to admit it was wrong. Considering the more expensive last-minute flight and other costs (such as rebooking domestic flights and trains in China) we are out about $930. I believe the airline should provide a flight voucher that compensates us for that amount. Can you help? Elizabeth, Amman, Jordan

Dear Elizabeth,

Your run-in with the complex world of international travel documentation was especially devastating because of the emotional stakes this trip represented for your family. But confusion over documentation leads to denied boarding “thousands of times a day,” said Max Tremaine, the chief executive of Sherpa , a company that maintains a database of international entrance requirements for travelers.

Not to excuse Qatar Airways for what I will charitably call a vigorous over-enforcement of the rules, but those frontline airline workers facing long lines at check-in can have a difficult task, making snap judgments on whether travelers have sufficient documents or not.

Countries all have their own entry rules depending on the passports that travelers hold and where they are coming from, and airlines are fined when they mistakenly allow people to fly. The decision may be straightforward when their customers are an American family with valid passports headed direct from New York to London for a week’s vacation. But travel can be complicated — consider, say, when a Dutch banker is on his way to Bangladesh via Cairo or an Australian trapeze artist with a one-way ticket heads to a performance in Kyrgyzstan through Frankfurt. The pandemic only complicated this complicated system. In your situation, your itinerary had you going through Qatar Airways’ hub in Doha, meaning those behind you in line in Jordan were probably headed to dozens of countries, all with their own rules.

In its responses to your complaints, Qatar Airways cited information from Timatic, a system many international airlines use to track the ever-changing entry and departure rules. One email response read: “At the time of your travel, a QR code for China was mandatory before boarding the flight, and also as per Chinese regulations.”

When I contacted the airline, I got a similar answer in a statement from Craig Thomas, Qatar’s vice president for sales in the Americas. “Passengers traveling to China were required to complete an Online China Customs Health e-Declaration prior to boarding the aircraft,” he wrote, noting that local entry requirements are “often complicated” and that the airline is “committed to assisting our passengers in navigating any issues that may arise.”

But Qatar is incorrect about what Timatic was advising at the time. Timatic is run by the International Air Transport Association, a trade organization better known as I.A.T.A. The group’s assistant director who runs Timatic from the Netherlands, Mahir Sahin, sent me the actual information Qatar Airways’ staff would have been relying on in July 2023:

“Passengers must complete an ‘Exit/Entry Health Declaration Form’ and present a QR code before departure or upon arrival.”

The “or upon arrival” bit applied to your situation, as you discovered on your second itinerary. When I asked Qatar Airways about this apparent oversight on their part and asked if it would change their decision not to reimburse you with the requested credit, they did not respond.

But airlines often act extra carefully around such matters, as they are wary of those government fines if they fly passengers without proper documentation. Timatic holds no official status, said Mr. Sahin. The airline is ultimately responsible.

Mr. Sahin explained an agent’s thinking at the check-in counter: “The agent who is checking you in does not know whether everything that you enter will be accepted by the government.”

Airlines at times still resort to risk management,” he said, “making judgment calls on boarding a passenger, especially in cases where government rules and regulations leave room for interpretation.”

But there are precautions you and other travelers can take to reduce their risk.

International documentation requirements differ, so it is worth reading the country’s own policies as well as the U.S. State Department’s recommendations.

But the best strategy, said Mr. Sahin, is to use the same source that supplies the airline their information on entry requirements. Many international carriers provide online resources powered by data from Timatic (or other suppliers like Sherpa) that allow passengers to read what they read. (Qatar Airways’ Travel Requirements page uses Timatic data.)

You can also check the databases on your own, using this rather awkward but perfectly functional page for Timatic, and this more user-friendly but not necessarily as detailed one for Sherpa.

At the end of the day, though, as you discovered, there is still room for airline agents to interpret, and sometimes misinterpret, the rules. This is especially true when you are connecting through an airline’s hub to a third country and the agent may be unfamiliar with that destination’s immigration procedures.

Even that American family heading to London can theoretically be required to prove they’ve arranged accommodations, according to the British government . Timatic doesn’t mention that in its directives to airlines, and it is, for most travelers, unlikely to happen.

But when Timatic does mention a requirement, travelers should take it seriously even if they find conflicting information elsewhere.

I received an email from a California woman who was denied boarding by Avianca for a trip from Los Angeles via San Salvador and Bogotá, Colombia, to La Paz, Bolivia. In Los Angeles, an Avianca worker did not let her board, telling the traveler she needed passport photos and a copy of recent bank statements. She countered that there is no mention of this requirement on the State Department’s page on entry requirements for Bolivia . But that was the wrong place to look. If she had consulted Avianca’s Timatic-supplied page on travel requirements, she would have seen a requirement passengers must have a passport photo and be able to provide “proof of funds” upon arrival, and “these could be bank statements.”

She rebooked for the next day, got photos and dutifully printed out the bank statements. But you know how the story goes: Bolivian officials asked for neither.

UAE jobs: Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways to hire hundreds more pilots in major recruitment drive

Recruitment roadshow will begin in Europe and expand globally in months to follow

Stock Etihad Airways pilots

Abu Dhabi: In preparation for doubling its fleet by 2030 and supporting its expanding network, UAE’s national carrier Etihad Airways announced a massive recruitment drive to hire hundreds of pilots this year and in 2025.

The Abu Dhabi-based carrier will launch an international roadshow to meet pilots who may wish to join the growing airline. The roadshow will begin in eight cities across Europe and then expand to many more global destinations.

The airline said it is recruiting pilots of all ranks and aircraft types and has asked them to register their interest by attending one of the roadshows. Etihad is seeking pilots of all ranks and aircraft types from across the Etihad fleet, including the Airbus A320, A350, and A380, as well as the Boeing 777, 787, and Boeing 777 freighters.

John Wright, Chief Operations and Guest Officer at Etihad Airways said, “As we embark on this pilot recruitment roadshow, we are proud to showcase everything that both Etihad and Abu Dhabi have to offer, and we are seeking pilots who share in our ambitions.”

He said, “We appreciate that pilots choose which airline to join for the length of their career, and as such, we would like to highlight not only the career development and progression opportunities on offer at Etihad but also the fantastic home and lifestyle that Abu Dhabi provides.”

Pilots who do not yet fulfil the airline’s recruitment criteria but may wish to join Etihad in the future are encouraged to attend the roadshow or register their interest online.

Etihad will double its fleet size by 2030 compared to 2022 and has plans to triple its passenger numbers to more than 30 million by 2030.

Earlier this year, airline CEO Antonoaldo Neves said Etihad plans to hire about 1,500 to 2,000 staff in preparation for 2025. The airline will receive 15 planes in 2025, requiring pilots, mechanics, and flight attendants for the new aircraft.

Etihad said its pilot community works alongside 142 nationalities and flies to over 70 destinations across Australia, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and North America. The airline considerably boosted its network capacities this month, preparing for the summer travel rush. It launched flights to 8 destinations, including Bali, Jaipur and Al Qassim, as well as several seasonal destinations, including the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini, Nice in the French Riviera and the holiday resorts of Malaga in Spain and Antalya in Turkey.

Indian and Middle Eastern Carriers Boost Connectivity to Tap India’s Outbound Potential

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

June 26th, 2024 at 9:49 AM EDT

Indian travelers are looking at Middle East for short-haul trips. Airlines from India and the region are in a race to attract them.

Bulbul Dhawan

India is emerging as an important source market for tourism for Middle Eastern nations.

  • In 2023, 11.9 million Indian passengers visited Dubai , accounting for nearly 70% of its total 17.15 million international tourists.
  • Saudi Arabia is also looking at India as a potential top source market . It witnessed a 50% increase in Indian visitors in 2023, and is aiming to attract 7.5 million Indian visitors over the next seven years.
  • India is also a key market for Qatar, which accounted for over 10% of the tourists in the nation last year. It was the second largest source market, after Saudi Arabia.
  • Oman received around 4.3 million international visitors in 2023 . Of these, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries collectively accounted for 1.6 million visitors, followed by India, with 610,000 tourists.
  • Last year, over 270,000 Indian tourists visited Turkey, an increase of 18% as compared to 2022. The country is aiming to attract more than 350,000 Indian travelers this year.

A recent McKinsey report also highlights how India is becoming a fast-growing source of outbound tourism, especially for short-haul destinations.

Increased Opportunities, More Flights

With India’s rising significance in the Middle East, airlines from India as well as the region are adding frequencies and new routes to enhance connectivity.

In an interview with Skift , low-cost carrier Akasa Air’s co-founder Praveen Iyer said that while expanding internationally, the airline received flying rights to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. “Each of these countries are constrained for capacity, and are therefore interesting markets,” he said, adding that the traffic flows between India and the Middle East will only grow with each passing year.

Indian and Middle Eastern carriers have significantly boosted connectivity in response to the rising demand from Indian tourists. Airlines have launched new routes and increased the frequency of existing flights to cater to the growing number of travelers. Some of the recent announcements include:

  • IndiGo: This week, IndiGo announced additional daily flights between Jeddah and Mumbai, starting August 15. IndiGo also announced direct flights between Kochi and Dammam and commenced daily direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Chandigarh, as well as between Abu Dhabi and Kannur, in May.
  • Akasa Air: This year, Akasa Air commenced its international operations starting with Doha. In June, it started operating to Riyadh while flights to Jeddah are set to begin next month.
  • Vistara: Full-service airline Vistara in December 2023 commenced four direct flights a week between Mumbai and Doha.
  • Air India Express: Budget airline Air India Express launched a direct flight service from Lucknow to Ras Al Khaimah in May. In April, the airline commenced flights between Mangalore and Jeddah. It began new direct flight services from Lucknow to Muscat and Dammam in March.
  • Etihad Airways: Last week, Etihad Airways commenced flights to Jaipur from Abu Dhabi. The airline also introduced daily flights from Abu Dhabi to Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram in January.
  • Oman Air: In September last year, Oman Air relaunched flights from Muscat to Lucknow and Thiruvananthapuram.
  • SalamAir: The low-cost Omani carrier last week announced its decision to commence direct flights between Muscat and Chennai. In November last year, it resumed services to 5 Indian cities – Hyderabad, Kozhikode, Jaipur, Thirvananthapuram, and Lucknow.
  • EgyptAir: The Egyptian flag carrier announced last month that it was expanding the Cairo-New Delhi service to daily flights.

The Bilateral Rights Dilemma

Airlines in the Middle East, including Emirates and Qatar Airways, have been seeking grants for more seats under the bilateral agreements so that they can operate an increased number of flights to and from India.

Earlier this month, Emirates President Tim Clark spoke against protectionism in India , saying that the country was restricting its access to give time to Air India amid its merger with Vistara.

However, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said that if more bilateral rights are granted to hubs in other countries, it would impact Indian airlines’ ability to fill seats on the new aircraft being inducted by domestic carriers. He further stated that granting more bilateral rights to other hubs would feed the economies of those countries instead of India’s.

Brazil will start racing from the beginning of SailGP’s fifth season, which is due to begin in November

Reuters

Brazil will join SailGP with backing from Abu Dhabi sovereign fund Mubadala Capital, making it the first South American team to line up in the high-octane league of foiling 50-foot catamarans started by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and veteran sailor Russell Coutts.

The organisers said on Friday that the Mubadala-owned Brazil SailGP team will partner with Brazilian sports and entertainment firm IMM to operate the new outfit, whose full line up will be confirmed in the coming months.

IMM is owned by ex-Brazilian Olympic sailor Alan Adler, who is also chief executive of Brazil Motor Sports, promoter of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix Formula One race. Mubadala Capital is the asset management arm of Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Investment Company.

“This opens up a new and very significant market for SailGP and we’re incredibly excited to further develop Brazil’s passionate fan base and strengthen our connection to the region,” SailGP’s CEO Coutts said in a statement.

Brazil will start racing from the beginning of SailGP’s fifth season, which is due to begin in November.

“This acquisition not only adds to our investment portfolio but also aligns with our long-term commitment to investing in Brazil,” Mubadala Capital Chief Investment Officer Oscar Fahlgren said in the same statement.

SailGP made the Brazilian announcement on the eve of its New York Grand Prix, the penultimate Season 4 event before the winner-takes-all Grand Final in San Francisco in mid-July.
