Romantic restaurants, modern architecture, and often looked in favour of its more famous counterpart, Stockholm, Gothenburg is a beautiful city of Sweden’s West Coast. Here’s a free and self-guided Gothenburg walking tour to help you get to know the quirky Swedish city on a more local level!

Like many European cities, Gothenburg is best explored on foot, though there is also a fantastic transport system in the form of trams and buses. For this walking tour of Gothenburg, I highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes as there are cobbled lanes in places (particularly around the Fish Market).

Although most of this self-guided walk is flat, the part at the end around the Haga District and up to the Skansen Kronan fort gets a little bit steep in places. In terms of dining options, you’ll be delighted to know that Gothenburg has a wonderful foodie scene , just waiting to be explored. Some of my top recommendations include Kafé Magasinet and Restaurang Atelier.

Distance: 4.7 km

Walking time: 1 hour

The first stop on this walking route is probably the most famous building in Gothenburg. The Feskekôrka is quite literally translated as the ‘fish church’ and is a fish market inspired by Gothic architecture.

Constructed in the 19th-century, the architect felt that fish was so integral to the city of Gothenburg that he constructed the indoor market to serve as a homage to the trade. Close to the Rosenlund Canal, the building also a restaurant within which serves a sea-inspired menu.

If you want to do a little shopping while in the city, or you’re simply looking for a quaint café in which to enjoy the Swedish art of Fika (a happiness ritual which involves enjoying coffee with cake!), then be sure to wander around Magasinsgatan.

Home to plenty of independent boutiques and shops, you’ll likely want to purchase several beautiful Swedish design pieces should you choose to check out any of the shops!

If you’re looking for a great place to hang out on a rainy day in the city, or simply wish to shop in some independent boutiques, then you need to look no further than the Victoriapassagen (Victoria Passage) .

Stretching between Vallgatan and Södra Larmgatan, the passage was constructed at the end of the 19th-century and is now a lovely street to stroll along, especially if you’re looking to escape some rainy weather!

For those looking for the opportunity to delve further into Gothenburg’s foodie scene (or are simply looking to escape some bad weather!), I highly recommend a venture through the Saluhallen.

Free to visit, the Market Hall is filled with produce from all over the world. Home to spices, coffee, and local delicacies, in total there are over forty shops and stalls!

I personally recommend Flickorna Kanold- their chocolates are simply delicious! Elsewhere in the vicinity, you’ll find several places in which to purchase lunch.

One of the prettiest spots in the city can be found not far from the Clarion Post Hotel in the form of the Fontänbron, the fountain bridge.

The area surrounding this bridge is home to a set of bridges spanning the Harbour Canal, and connecting the Southern part of the Östra Hamngatan to the Northern part.

Come summertime (or even in the winter) the coolest place to hang out in the city is the Palm House, part of the Garden Society. Open on a daily basis, all throughout the year, once inside this set of greenhouses you’ll soon discover a pretty oasis of greenery. Modelled on the Crystal Palace of London, the Palm House dates all the way back to 1878.

For lovers of Fika, coffee culture, and Scandi design, the historic Haga district is an absolute must when visiting Gothenburg. Once on the fringes of Gothenburg, today this district has been incorporated into the city of Gothenburg itself.

Home to plenty of coffee shops and boutiques, during the month of December, one of the best Christmas markets in Gothenburg is held in the heart of this district.

The most ‘Instagrammable’ coffee shop in the city is that of Kafé Magasinet . Home to two spaces; an indoor bar and a plant-covered conservatory area, this café has a great selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes, as well as a mouth-watering menu of desserts, including raw vegan options!

The final stop on this Gothenburg walking tour is that of Skansen Kronan. Offering a 360-degree bird’s eye view of the city, truth be told, the hike up to the top is pretty steep! Dating all the way back to the end of the 17th-century, this domed structure is characterised by its crown roof and has 4-5 metre thick walls.

Free and self-guided Gothenburg walking tour. Looking for the best things to do in the Swedish city of Gothenburg? How to get to know the city on a local level (Skansen Kronan, Haga District)

While many people maintain that the best time to visit Gothenburg is in the summer months when the days stretch on for hours and the weather is warm, a trip to the city is well worth it during other seasons as well.

After all, if you spend a weekend break in Gothenburg in the winter , then you can expect to find plenty of beautiful Christmas markets and the chance to go shopping in the sales.

Although English is well spoken in many parts of the city, I still did find myself reaching for a translation app on my phone on a fair few occasions. As such, I highly recommend purchasing a simple Swedish phrasebook in advance.

When it comes to finding the perfect hotel to stay at, while Gothenburg is not nearly as popular as the Swedish capital of Stockholm, certain events during the year mean that at certain times, all the best hotels and guesthouses are booked up.

As such, I highly recommend booking your Gothenburg stay well in advance. Check here for the best accommodation prices in Gothenburg.

Join us on a walk from Stora Hamnkanalen to Hagakyrkan. Hear about the huge city fires and how the canals were the city’s lifeblood. After the city’s walls were demolished, a green area was planted around the old city, a breathing hole for the population. During the 19th century, many of the city’s stone houses were built. Who built them and for what? During the walk, we talk about people’s lives and about buildings that have been important to the city and its inhabitants throughout the centuries.

THE FORTIFIED CITY

Tuesday to Friday 29 aug–1 september and 5 september–8 september 15.00–16.00

The old Gothenburg was built as fortress, with wide ramparts, deep moats and high walls, all to prevent the enemy from taking the city. The walls and ramparts were demolished in the 19th century, but a surprising amount remains, if you know where to look. Join us on a walk in search of Gothenburg’s old fortifications.

The thriving city of Gothenburg on Sweden’s west coast is Sweden’s second-largest, and offers plenty of free things to do. From annual cultural events to free saunas and stunning parks, you can get the best out of Gothenburg even if you’re on a budget.

Each spring, the Gothenburg Opera offers free concerts – although they’re so popular it’s important you book your tickets ahead. In addition, the Opera offers free evening concerts on the main stage during the Gothenburg Culture Festival, which is held each August, so if soaring arias are your thing, you might want to plan your trip to Gothenburg at one of these times of the year. That it’s also one of the city’s most impressive buildings makes it even more worthy of a visit.

A Free Museum

Sweden believes in making sure everyone has access to culture, and that means that there are quite a few museums that offer free entry either all the time or for specific age groups or on certain days. The Museum of World Culture is one of the best, and the good news is that it’s free year-round. With regular exhibitions as well as seminars, films and other events that look at the world around us and some of the bigger questions of our time, this museum is both a cultural hub and a place to expand your mind.

Culture Night

Every autumn for a quarter of a century, Gothenburg has been home to Kulturnatta (‘Culture Night’), which is billed as a night by everyone, for everyone. Anyone can participate, and there are no fees for anyone: not visitors, not participants, not organisers. The result is a truly democratic culture festival that throws up everything from performance art to light installations, stand-up and amazing art exhibitions. The city is great at promoting all participants and every time you turn a corner there’s something new to discover.

Gothenburg’s Culture Night has something for everyone

Take a Sauna

It’s only been open since 2015, but Gothenburg’s free sauna in the Frihamnen district is not only a huge hit with locals and visitors, it’s also garnering plenty of attention from the architectural world. As part of the city’s efforts to develop the area, the sauna has been joined by a swimming pool and a small beach, all completely free to visit. You have to book your time but it’s worth it, particularly on warm summer days.

There are also playgrounds and there are often free concerts here.

Continuing with the nature theme, the city’s Botanical Garden is found just opposite Slottsskogen and it’s filled with endless flowers, shrubbery, trees and even waterfalls. free city tour gothenburg

If you’re considering planning a 1, 2 or 3 days in Gothenburg itinerary you’re really going to be spoilt for choice when it comes to incredible things to do in this lively city.

While Sweden’s capital city of Stockholm is the heart and core of Swedish culture and government, Sweden’s second-largest city is one of the top locations to visit in the country.

Home to Volvo, beautifully designed Dutch canals, and one of the most thriving art and culture destinations in Scandinavia, Gothenburg is a city that can’t be missed.

Gothenburg has about half the population of Stockholm with the addition of stunning elegance and pools of green throughout the city.

Sweden’s second-largest city is the perfect spot to experience Swedish style and culture without just being another tourist of the masses.

How Many Days in Gothenburg?

One of the crucial planning points of your trip will be to decide how long to stay in Gothenburg. While it’s usually easier to decide how long to stay in capital cities, smaller cities can be trickier to figure out.

Gothenburg is ⅓ the size of Stockholm and although there is plenty to do, an ideal trip would be a long weekend in the city.

With one day in Gothenburg, you’ll be able to see the main sights, eat a good meal, and wander around the city.

If you spend 2 days in Gothenburg, you’ll be able to go at a much slower pace, taking in the city while doing all the same things within 1 day but in less of a rush.

With 3 days in this Scandinavian city, you’ll be able to explore the city at your own pace, taking in the sights and tastes as well as managing to take a short day trip to the neighboring, breezy seaside, Gothenburg Archipelago.

Getting To & Around Gothenburg

You’ll likely be arriving in Gothenburg either by plane or by train.

If you’re visiting from another part of Sweden, the best way will be to take a train to get to Gothenburg’s Central Station. Sweden has a wonderful transportation system and you’ll be able to get a high-speed train from most of Sweden at usually an affordable cost.

You can reach Gothenburg by train from Stockholm, Copenhagen , or Malmo in around 3 hours, making it a central point of any Sweden itinerary . You can view schedules here.

Gothenburg has its own airport (Landvetter International Airport) located 25 km from the city center and serves routes throughout the rest of Scandinavia as well as the rest of Europe.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any direct public transportation from Gothenburg Airport to the city center, but there are multiple coach bus services offering transportation.

The travel time is around 20 minutes from the airport to the city and can be purchased in advance online or on the bus depending on the company. FlixBus is my favourite, as they have frequent services, low costs, and pretty comfortable seats on the bus. If you have the budget, it is also possible to book a private transfer.

If where you’re visiting Gothenburg from doesn’t offer direct flights to the city’s airport, the second-best option would be to fly into Stockholm or Copenhagen and then take a train to Gothenburg. Stockholm and Copenhagen airports are both bigger, lending more opportunities for flights from varying departure countries.

Just like the rest of Sweden, the city of Gothenburg has wonderfully efficient and sustainable urban transportation options. The main transportation system in Gothenburg consists of bus, a large tram network, and boat services which are all included in the same transportation ticket.

A single ticket costs around 35 SEK for 90 minutes for one zone covering any included transport that you need from your departure area to your final destination.

If you need to travel throughout different zones in the city, you’ll need to purchase a multiple-zone ticket (or two one-zone tickets) which lasts for 180 minutes and costs double the price of a 90-minute ticket.

It’s also possible to purchase day-pass tickets (1-3 days) giving unlimited public transport for the number of zones included in your pass.

To give you a better understanding of the zones, there are 3 zones in the city of Gothenburg, A, B, and C. While zone A is the direct center of the city, it’s quite a small area so if you plan on exploring the city without restrictions, make sure you at least get a ticket for zones A and B if you plan on purchasing a pass. Otherwise, purchase tickets as you go along according to your destination.

Despite the orderly transportation system of Gothenburg, the city itself is quite small making it an incredibly walkable city. For example, a walk between the Skansen Kronan Castle and the Gothenburg Museum of Natural History takes just around 18 minutes and this goes for most locations within the main city center.

However, you may want to use public transportation if you want to visit somewhere like the Liseberg Amusement Park or the expansive Gothenburg Botanical Garden (Trädgårdsföreningen), both of which are a little bit further out.

1, 2 or 3-Day Gothenburg Itinerary

It’s pretty easy to say that Gothenburg is one of the “coolest” and on-trend cities in Europe. While the city began as a Dutch trading colony in 1621, today it’s the sustainability capital of Scandinavia, the home to Volvo cars, friendly locals, and a world-renowned food scene.

It’s also one of the most enjoyable cities in Sweden to wander around on a long weekend and enjoy the idyllic architecture & Swedish minimalism, fika culture, nature, and canals making up Sweden’s second-largest city.

Day 1 – Gothenburg’s Central Highlights

Gothenburg main center .

The prime location to begin any Gothenburg itinerary is in Gothenburg’s classic old town. Begin at the sprawling Gustaf Adolfs (King Gustaf Adolf founded the city in 1621) Torg , formerly Stora Torget. This is Gothenburg’s main square where you’ll find the city’s Town Halls, both old and new.

After wandering around in Gothenburg’s largest square, continue into the Western North Town (Vastra Nordstaden) , and further take in the historical buildings such as the Stock Exchange, and Crown Hall (Kronhuset, Gothenburg’s oldest building dating back to 1643 in Dutch architecture).

If you want to learn more about the history, you can book a walking tour here.

Domkyrkan (Gothenburg Cathedral)

After first getting acquainted with Gothenburg in the precise and historically rich center of the city, I suggest heading to Domkyrkan (Gothenburg’s Cathedral) which is about a 6-minute walk.

Gothenburg’s Cathedral was first built in the early 19th century by architect Carl Willhelm Carlberg after an earlier cathedral built in the 17th century had perished. The interior of the cathedral is a unique mix of styles, from classical and empirical style to traditional baroque.

This gorgeous cathedral is an integral part of the city of Gothenburg and is a beneficial addition to any trip to Gothenburg.

Gothenburg Cathedral

Wander Around Magasinsgatan

A short walk (around 5 minutes) away from the Gothenburg Cathedral will bring you to Magasinsgatan (Warehouse Street) .

This area is a great spot to explore Gothenburg off the beaten path and is the perfect example of how historic working-class areas in many cities today are prime spots for hip culture, shopping, and food scenes.

Here you’ll find many unique and local brands filling the streets, as well as a laid-back, expressive, and alternative atmosphere. Just wandering the area is an adventure in itself, taking in the architecture and street art, food trucks, and everything in between.

Dinner at Feskekorka (Fish Church) or Saluhallen Food Hall

At this point of your first day, you’ll likely have built up an appetite and be ready to enjoy a meal in Gothenburg’s renowned food scene.

My recommendations to have the best local experience with Gothenburg’s best and most well-loved foods are to either head to the Fish Church or the Saluhallen Food Hall.

Due to the city’s prime location by the sea, you’ll find outstanding seafood in Gothenburg and the surrounding areas. Built in 1874, Feskekorka (Fish Church) is the local fish market in Gothenburg and is a Gothenburg staple.

The building itself resembles a church and because of this, it took on its name and is one of the most recognisable buildings in Gothenburg. While the main part of the building is a fish market, there are a few delectable restaurants inside serving up some of the tastiest seafood in all of Gothenburg.

If you’re not into seafood, another option is to head to the Saluhallen Food Hall , about 5 minutes away in the other direction. The Saluhallen Food Hall is located in an iconic 1800s building and here you’ll be able to find all sorts of dishes and cuisines, including traditional Swedish delicacies.

Feskekorka

Day 2 –  A Deeper Dive into the City’s Culture

Breakfast in the haga neighborhood.

To begin the second day of your visit to Gothenburg, I suggest heading to Haga , one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, to have a Swedish breakfast and a leisurely wander.

This area is lined with homes in traditional brick Gothenburg style, cosy cafes/coffee houses, unique shops of every type, and restaurants aplenty.

At Christmastime, you’ll find a festive Christmas Market and in the spring/autumn, you’ll have the opportunity to browse the local farmer’s market. My suggestion is to head to Latteria to enjoy a tasty breakfast before continuing your day.

Skansen Kronan Castle

Located on the perimeter of the Haga neighborhood is one of the most important landmarks in Gothenburg, the Skansen Kronan Castle.

Completed in 1700, the imposing fortress was built in preparation for battle but in all of the time of its existence, it was never actually used for that purpose as it was never attacked by enemies.

It’s been used in varying ways throughout history and today is used as a banquet hall, wedding venue, and party venue. This classic fortification offers wonderful views of the city and is definitely on of the top things to do in Gothenburg. You also can get an incredible view of Gothenburg from the castle, as well.

The outdoor part of the castle not used for venues is open 24 hours a day and is free for visitors unless. If you want to see inside, you’ll have to arrange a tour in advance with the Skansen Kronan group.

Skansen Kronan

Gothenburg Museum of Art or Volvo Museum

A solid way to round up your second day (if you’re planning 3-day itinerary, the last day will be spent outside of the city), is to head to one of the city’s varying museums. My suggestions are either the Gothenburg Museum of Art or the Volvo Museum.

The Gothenburg Museum of Art is located in the central Lorensberg neighborhood and is known to be one of the best collections of art in all of Sweden and Scandinavia. With international collections dating back to the 15th century and unique exhibitions, I think the Gothenburg Museum of Art is one of the best museums to visit in the city.

Tickets for a single entry are around 65 SEK and are free for students and those under 20 years. Opening hours vary depending on the day and time of year, so check in advance to plan your day.

One of Gothenburg’s biggest names and sources of fame is easily the home to Volvo cars. For car aficionados or those interested in a unique and integral part of Gothenburg, a visit to the Volvo Museum is a great option.

Here you’ll take a trip throughout the history of the Volvo name beginning in 1927, its cars and what makes the company how we know it today. Entry tickets are around 160 SEK with concession tickets available.

Again, the hours of the museum vary depending on the day and time of year so check the website to plan accordingly.

Day 3 – Gothenburg Archipelago

Gothenburg is located in a perfect location for both city-dwellers and nature lovers alike. While even in the city center you won’t find yourself far from green areas, the Gothenburg Archipelago lines the waters of Gothenburg and southwest Sweden.

The archipelago consists of 20 islands and is split into two groups; the Northern Archipelago and the Southern Archipelago. Both are incredibly beautiful and worth the visit but with just one day, I suggest heading to the Southern Archipelago.

The Southern Archipelago is closer and more accessible with public transport, whereas the Northern Archipelago is a bit more of a complicated journey. The islands are completely car-free and have such a relaxed and happy atmosphere that’ll make you want to spend more time on the islands.

You can easily reach the Southern Archipelago in around 30 minutes on public transportation and there are quite a few options when deciding which island to visit on your day trip.

Styrso is the main hub island of the southern islands and is a great contender for which island to visit. You’ll find cafes, restaurants, and quiet spots to swim while enjoying the warming Swedish sun.

Another option if you’re looking to be fully immersed in nature, is to visit Vargo. Vargo island is the furthest west island of the Southern Archipelago and is pure nature and peace. There are no restaurants or stores as Vargo is a nature reserve, so bring a blanket and picnic to feel the fresh sea breeze, take in the wildlife, and go for a swim.

Southern Gothenburg Archipelago

Where to Stay in Gothenburg

Hotel Royal – Mid-range visitors to Gothenburg will love this centrally-located hotel. They have lovely, clean and comfortable rooms to choose from and even offer a great breakfast to start your day each morning.

Hotel Pigalle – For those who’d like a luxury option in Sweden’s second city, this hotel is a great choice. There are a myriad of elegant rooms to choose from and countless great amenities to ensure your stay in Gothenburg is a fantastic one.

Slottskogens Hostel – If you’re traveling solo or on a budget, then this hostel offers both dorms and private rooms along with good self-catering facilities and common areas.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Gothenburg hotels!

Gothenburg isn’t the most popular destination in Sweden, but it’s easily one of the most dynamic. There’s something for everyone; whether you’re keen on history, culture, food, nature, or modern architecture.

After spending some time in Gothenburg, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for Sweden’s second-biggest city and will likely be waiting for another trip to explore the region further.

Out of Your Comfort Zone

The art of backpacking & adventures to get out of your comfort zone – tips and advice, 7.5 things to do for (almost) free in gothenburg, sweden.

Last Updated on May 23, 2024 by Talita

* Gothenburg , the 2nd biggest city in Sweden , is the place Rodrigo and I are currently calling home. It’s a great city and our friend Djordje Milosav, a student here, wrote an article for us with a free thing you can do here each day of the week. Enjoy!

Things you will need:

  • 5 minutes to read this article
  • 7 days in Gothenburg (or less)
  • 1 pair of running shoes and some sports clothes
  • You don’t really need anything else but 5 is a great number.

Gothenburg Free Activity #1: Monday Foam Rolling Class

It’s February (this actually applies from the end of November until the beginning of April – optimistically), so when you get up in the morning, the sun simply doesn’t. You feel that you could pay for it to get up, but then you remember that you are on a budget. Depressing, I know.

Anyhow, as with any other Monday, most of the museums are closed (but are free on other days if you are under 25!) so you go out to explore the city. And sometime after the lunch , you have previously prepared by yourself (let’s say spaghetti with tuna sauce if you’re weird like Rodrigo), you should register yourself for the first free thing on this list: BLACKROLL® Sessions.

BLACKROLL Gothenburg

The sessions are an excellent and relaxing workout that is great for your legs. You can register is by sending an email to Rebeka at [email protected] as soon as you finish washing up the dishes since the workout starts at 16:30.

The black roll sessions take place at The Centre of Health and Performance at Skånegatan 14b (the nearest tram stop is Ullevi Norra – see a map below). The only thing you need is some sports clothes….Rebeka will guide you through the rest!

Gothenburg Free Activity #2: Tuesday Running Group Workout OR Jazz Night

Still no sun. But this time, you got up really fast even without any coffee since you did BLACKROLL® yesterday. Already feeling better and ready for some more action?

For those of you who answered “YES,” check these guys out . Gothenburg Running Club is a group of young enthusiasts that organize free running workouts in different places around the city. They meet up every Tuesday at 6 PM and it’s always free to join. You can find where they are meeting in the “events” section of their Facebook page here .

Joining the group is a great way to explore the hidden parks that you didn’t know Gothenburg had and to learn some new Swedish words (hint: the more squats you do, the more Swedish numbers you learn….I did “ sju ” which totally means 100).

But if BLACKROLL® was tough enough for you yesterday, then you should definitely visit Nefertiti Jazz Club instead. They are always free on Tuesdays and offer live jazz jam sessions that are really enjoyable. The place opens at 7 pm and the music starts around an hour later (but if you want a nice spot in front of the stage, then you should be there around 7 PM to get it since a lot of people come).

Gothenburg Free Activity #3: Wednesday Public Sauna

This morning will probably be snowing. But don’t be sad! This is the best weather that you can imagine while experiencing the free public sauna at Jubileumsparken.

This amazing piece of architecture was created mostly from mostly from recycled materials by German architect-collective Raumlabor. And it’s in the middle of the water! If you didn’t figure it out already, this is where you use your towel.

You can book here . Unfortunately, the booking system is only in Swedish so you’ll have to translate everything. There are basically three options to book: male-only sauna, female-only sauna, and mixed. The maximum amount of people that you can register at once is 2 so you can bring a friend along.

Jubileumsparken Sauna

I know it doesn’t look like a sauna or a nice place to visit….but I promise, it is! Picture credits to https://goteborg.se/wps/portal/enhetssida/jubileumsparken

Gothenburg Free Activity #4: Thursday Museum Day

As mentioned in the beginning, if you’re under 25, the doors of any museum in Gothenburg are open and for free for you.

We personally liked the Gothenburg Museum of Art best since it had a wide variety of art to see from Renaissance to the present, including works from artists such as Rembrandt, Picasso, Henry Moore and Louise Nevelson.

Gothenburg Museum of Art

If this is too “nerdy” (it’s not, btw), try the Volvo or Maritime Museum for a glimpse of Swedish industrial power, or head to Gothenburg’s Natural History Museum for a face-to-face encounter with something more dangerous than a Scandinavian moose (although those moose are still huge and impressive ).

Natural History Museum Gothenburg

Gothenburg (Almost) Free Activity #5: Friday “Don’t-Bring-Your-Credit-Card” OR “Get-Free-Food” Night Out

Although it’s not on us to claim, we’d say that Friday is a Swedish Saturday….which means that it’s time for a night out!

And this is where “almost” in the parenthesis from the title comes in. To be honest, alcohol in Sweden is really expensive (this is only false if you’re from Norway where it’s even more expensive). And one way to make sure you spend nothing on alcohol is to bring only cash when you go out.

It may sound strange, but many places in Gothenburg only accept cards — no cash. So, if you really want to make your night free….leave your credit card and debit card at home!

But if you do bring your card along with you for drinks, and you may as well get some free food out of the deal. Just head to Kings Head Pub on the famous going-out street of Andra Långgatan and you can enjoy an extra (and “free”) buffet with the purchase of a drink (one beer is about 35 Swedish Kronor).

Gothenburg Free Activity #6: Saturday Flea Market

If you stick to the plan and stay on budget by restraining yourself to not get “just one more” (okay, “two more”) beer on the previous night, you’ll be able to get up early and head to the free market called Kviberg (the name of the tram stop is the same — here’s where it is on the map ).

Not only you will find extremely cheap fruits and vegetables (again, not applicable to Norwegians)….. but you’ll be able to experience a completely different vibe of Sweden with many people coming from other cultures and bringing their own food, spices, languages, and clothes . And you’re looking for something that you consider really difficult to find here in Sweden, chances are pretty good you’ll find it here for a very good (and negotiable price)!

Kviberg Market Gothenburg

Gothenburg Free Activity #7: Sunday Chill Out

Make your favorite pasta again and watch a movie. It’s Sunday after all.

(Or if you’re feeling really motivated – hit up some of Gothenburg’s parks! There’s Gothenburg’s main park with a small free zoo Slottsskogen , the year-round beautiful botanical gardens , or the lake-filled Delsjöområdet nature reserve )

Other activities and attractions in Gothenburg…

I would also recommend taking a look at the Gothenburg Pass . When you buy this pass, you get access to a bunch of tours, tickets, and attractions for free or heavily discounted in Gothenburg.

Whether you live in Gothenburg or are just here for a visit, hopefully , this list will give you some new ideas of things to do. If you have any other free (or almost free) activities in Gothenburg that you think should be added to the list, let us know in the comments below!

A city-hopping guide to Copenhagen and Gothenburg

S ometimes it feels like we’ve already rifled through Scandinavia and adopted all its best bits in London: the minimalist decor, the hygge vibes, the fika coffee and cake rituals. However, a two-week break criss-crossing between Denmark and Sweden, revealed these two friendly, easy-to-navigate countries have kept enough secrets to themselves to make for a brilliant holiday.

We started in Copenhagen , discovering a city that is happy with where it is in life. It will make you merry on shots of Akvavit at street food market Reffen , then offer you a chilly river dip, sauna and excellent coffee the next morning. Copenhagen is also incredibly child-friendly and packed with museums and galleries.

Sweden’s second city, Gothenburg , which is often rated one of the happiest places to live in the world, was the ideal next stop. Quirky yet functional, it is easily walkable and packed with attractions, from Universeum, a museum with an indoor rainforest, to the unique Lisberg theme park , fuelled by the city’s hallmark Hagabullen — enormous cinnamon buns.

In August Scandinavia is usually fairly warm and sunny, though you may experience rain in Copenhagen. We loved it in spite of the wet weather. Gothenburg offers long days and warm weather in spring, summer and autumn. In winter, when it’s snowy, hotel rates are cheaper.

In Copenhagen, pitch up at Bryggen Guldsmeden (rooms start at £106 a night, guldsmedenhotels.com ). The vibe is Balinese city break: it’s a very special bolthole from the city, with a lush courtyard with a warm pool, sauna and steam room. Bedrooms have four-poster beds and a decor combining Crittal-windowed Shoreditch with Indonesian spa: solid wooden Scandi furniture mingles with bright prints, leather sofas and bare brick walls. It’s an eco-hotel that really means it, with refillable water bottles, recycling receptacles and an array of iloveeco ’s brilliant toiletries — including body oils, moisturisers, bamboo hairbrushes and crystal deodorant.

Breakfast is utterly perfect: all-organic and very Danish. An open kitchen prepares everything from sesame salads, to pastries, homemade yogurts and chilli scrambled eggs, served on Anthropologie-esque crockery. Freshly-baked breads come with thin slabs of dark chocolate to melt on top.

Group tables see local workers mingle with out-of-towners, and placemats read, ‘take all you want, eat all you take, love food, hate waste’.

The hotel has a really social lounge area with hanging swings, a fab gym with free boxing lessons, and was a 20-minute walk to the centre, or five-minutes from the Metro, in the Island Brygge area where locals swim in the Havnebadet, or harbour bath.

In Gothenburg, the quirky new Grand Curiosa Hotel (from £112 a room, hotel.liseberg.se ) at Liseberg is quite the talking point with its helter-skelter alternative to taking the stairs, the curiosities which line its corridors and a vast and delicious breakfast. There’s no pool (a water park opens next year) but it’s just steps away from the city’s brilliant theme park, a few doors down from the unmissable Universeum museum and a ten-minute (very frequent) tram from the centre.

You can’t go wrong at one of the stylish food markets dotted around Copenhagen, packed with excellent-quality world cuisines: we loved pasta at il mattarello in Torvehallerne , and spicy ramen at Tivoli food market . The former shipyards in Reffen now house a street market packed with cuisines from Kurdish stews to Korean chicken via Mexican burritos, and a beer hall. Take the bus and you’ll pass Noma , which is still open for select events, if that’s in budget.

Overall, the city’s restaurants are dripping with Michelin stars and superb cooking, although the prices are less appealing. Smorrebrod open sandwiches in cafes everywhere are an excellent lunch.

In Gothenburg, Feskekorka is a must: a converted church and now fish market. Go for the oysters or the herring and fish soup if you’re keen to go native.

Craft beer is a major thing in this city — even serious fans will be impressed by 3 Små Rum . Go for fika – coffee and a snack - in one of the many cafes in the historic Haga area, and stroll Skanstorget’s streets for hip fresh pasta, Mexican and Spanish eats.

Copenhagen is as flat as its plentiful rye bread crackers; it’s very walkable, or you can hire a bike and join the millions of locals whizzing along safe cycle lanes. The metro and bus system is fast and easy too; a one-day travel pass is around £8.

The city has a density of world-leading museums that even puts London to shame. Pick your favourite from the Nationalmuseet with its Vikings and mummies, the Krigsmuseet war museum , modern art in the ancient Nikolai Kunsthal church, the excellent Enigma museum of communication (all ages will love the playable old games consoles in the basement, and the really imaginative large kids’ area), and Experimentarium, a three-floor, imaginative kids science museum. The latter spans lifesize marble runs and a huge miniverse for under-fives including a bear hospital with X-rays for the animals.

Buy the Copenhagen card (£97 for 72 hours, cheaper for fewer days) which is great value, especially as two kids go free with it; there’s access to some 70 museums and unlimited use of public transport.

Hit the Nyhavn waterfront with its photogenic tall pastel homes belying the fact this area was built by prisoners of war in the 1600s, when King Christian V wanted easier access to his palaces. It’s touristy, though, so for a quieter and more genuine Copenhagen hit, stroll to the Norrebro and Vesterbro neighbourhoods, where you can’t swish a mermaid’s tale without hitting a cool bar and one-off boutique.

Of course there’s Tivoli Gardens — the chic, pretty version of a theme park, with a century-old rollercoaster. It’s beautiful in the evenings, although the 10pm light show isn’t much.

A canal tour takes you along the inner harbour, Slotsholmen canal and the city’s famous Little Mermaid sculpture, which locals hate (it’s been decapitated, de-armed and splattered with paint over the years) as much as tourists love it.

Our kids loved the playgrounds they found all over Copenhagen — there are more than 130 — especially the ‘traffic playground’ with carefully set-up streets with roundabouts, a petrol station, traffic lights and excellently-maintained (free) bikes. Many of the playgrounds are staffed (hello, parental coffee break) with indoor crafts, outdoor bikes, fruit and vegetable patches, gardening tools, litter pickers, and petting zoos.

Gothenburg feels more laid back — it’s smaller, easier to stroll, and slightly cheaper too. The vast (free) botanical gardens are well worth a wonder, with Kew-style glasshouses and playgrounds too.

Take a canal ride — we used The Paddan Tour from Stromma — to get a great sense of the history of this city, where in 1619 king Gustavus Adolphus pointed to the ground and declared, “Here, the city shall lie”.

We spent the best part of a day at Universeum museum , which includes walkable jungles and a shark tunnel, ecosystems from around the world as well as very interactive exhibitions on the human body, space, and matrixes. On the roof, the vast ‘Wisedome’ cinema hosts a 3D screen that encircles you, with environment-focused films.

Many Swedes flock to Gothenburg for one thing: its Liseberg theme park. We arrived at opening time, thanks to its proximity to our hotel, and were kicked out at closing time, and wished we’d had more time. There are about 50 rides, including the scariest coasters anyone could wish for, an entire rabbit-themed land where younger children can easily spend an entire day. It’s clean, manicured, and not at all mercenary: ‘Your kids passed their driving test? Here’s a free photo license!’, ‘You dropped your ice cream? Have another!’

If you have time, take a trip out into the Gothenburg archipelago islands — take a public ferry from the city centre and spend a day chilling out on a beach, Swedish-style.

Stroll Haga Nygata for arty souvenirs and in warehouse space Artilleriet for Scandi interiors to take home — for you’ll want to be reminded of every memory made in Copenhagen and Gothenberg.

We’ve seen Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift spend a bunch of time together in recent months … and then the Kansas City Chiefs tight end was at all three Eras Tour London shows and he even did a cameo on stage in one of them.

Now, Swift continues her international leg of the Eras Tour, so you might wonder: given that Travis has some time off, will he be in Dublin for three days to see her perform again?

Maybe it’s possible that he stayed in Europe to be there, but no word at the moment on what he’s up to. So, we’ll see!
