Looking ahead
16 dates golf fans need to circle in 2022
The 150th Open Championship will be played at St. Andrews.
Mark Runnacles
The calendar seems to turn as quickly as we can press our finger to the screen and scroll down on our phones. Is it really approaching three years since Tiger Woods’ incredible triumph in the Masters ? Or more than 10 months since the car accident that again altered the path of his life ? We have our memories, good and bad, but the beauty of sports is that it gives us seasons for which to look forward, when all is new and possible. And no campaign, of course, is longer than in golf, which delivers nearly a full 12 months of thrills and heartbreak.
MORE: West Coast Swing seeing a boom in interest despite Omicron surge
This week, the PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing starts again with the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui. The wraparound season had already begun, but for many, the images of palm trees blowing in the Hawaiian breeze at Kapalua give us reason enough to feel warmly optimistic about what the coming golf year will bring. With that in mind, we offer a few of those dates you might want to circle on your calendars—and not just the ones you think—as you look ahead to another intriguing year in our sport.
Jan. 30: APGA Tour plays on the big stage
Just like most pro mini tours, the Advocates Pro Golf Association— a circuit founded to provide more professional playing opportunities for minorities —has mostly toiled in anonymity. It got some exposure in 2021 when the Farmers Insurance Open offered a special exemption to APGA standout Kamaiu Johnson, and now the APGA is getting a chance to take a far bigger stage. After the Farmers Insurance Open finishes on Saturday, the APGA will be on Golf Channel on Sunday when it plays the Torrey Pines' South Course in the final round of its 36-hole event, called APGATOUR at the Farmers Insurance Open (the PGA Tour event wrapping up the previous day). Is there a star in the making for us to discover? We'll see.
Feb. 3-6: Saudi International
In any other year, the Saudi event—which was formerly a part of the DP World Tour (which was formerly the European Tour)—was merely a curiosity to American fans, mostly to see which PGA Tour players were drawn to the Middle East for sizeable appearance fees. This year, it seems far more compelling now that the talk of rival tours has heated up , and the PGA Tour has given permission to its players to jump on their private jets (and pad their bank accounts) in what is now an Asian Tour event. Among them is Phil Mickelson, who will miss Pebble Beach, where he’s won five times.

March 10-13: Players Championship
It’s crazy to consider that the week of the Players will mark two years since the pandemic turned our lives upside down. Depending on how the first couple of months go with the Omicron variant, the tournament is expected to greet full galleries after being wiped out after one round in 2020 and limited to 20 percent capacity in 2021. Justin Thomas is the defending champion after narrowly making the cut and then rallying on Sunday to overtake Bryson DeChambeau and Lee Westwood.
March 27: Last chance (almost) for the Masters
The last opportunity to reach Augusta National—aside from winning the Valero Texas Open in the week prior—is to get into the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking at the end of the Corales Puntacana Championship. Good luck, bubble dwellers.
March 31-April 3: The Chevron Championship
Tears no doubt will flow for some when the LPGA plays the event for one last time at Mission Hills and the California desert, home to the tournament since it was founded by Dinah Shore in 1972. With Chevron as its new sponsor, the tour’s first major of the year since 1983 is set to move to the Houston area beginning in 2023. Patty Tavatanakit defends after an impressive breakout win in ’21 .
The LPGA will bid goodbye to Mission Hills and the Dinah Shore statue when it plays its last major there in March.
David Cannon
April 7-10: Masters
The color and atmosphere of the men’s first major of the year is expected to return to full bloom after two years of missing Augusta’s most cherished gift: the roars. Hideki Matsuyama will be back as defending champion after his history-making turn last April .
May 19-22: PGA Championship
Is it possible Tulsa’s weather will actually be tolerable in mid-May? Southern Hills Country Club has hosted some oppressively sweaty summer majors, but this one might get a break with a spring date that opened when the PGA of America yanked the event from Trump Bedminster after the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021. Phil Mickelson is the defending champ from Kiawah , while the last man to win a major in Tulsa (Tiger Woods in the 2007 PGA) very likely will be watching from his couch.
MORE: 13 golf futures bets were making for 2022
June 2-5: U.S. Women’s Open
Pine Needles in Southern Pines, N.C., this year’s host, only got into the USGA Women’s Open rotation in 1996. But it has delivered impressive champions since: Annika Sorenstam in ’96, Karrie Webb in ’01 and Cristie Kerr in ’07. Yuka Saso of the Philippines defends after winning last year’s Open in a playoff at The Olympic Club.
Cristie Kerr receives the U.S. Women's Open trophy after her two-stroke victory at Pine Needles in 2007.

June 7: Golf's Longest Day
Ten sites … more than 800 players … 36 holes. And to the most talented and courageous on "Golf's Longest Day," there awaits a spot in the U.S. Open. There are 11 final qualifiers (the one outside of the U.S. being in Japan), and June 7 marks the 10 contested around the country in America. Last year, former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel made it through the gantlet, as did Wilson Furr, a University of Alabama star who didn't even have a spot in his qualifier until some late withdrawals. Therein lies the beauty of the Longest Day.
June 16-19: U.S. Open
With the national championship returning to The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., for the first time since 1988, you’ll do yourself a favor if you brush up by reading one of the best golf books of all-time—Mark Frost’s The Greatest Game Ever Played —that recounts amateur Francis Ouimet’s Brookline triumph in 1913. Of course, memories of the Americans’ Sunday comeback at Brookline in the 1999 Ryder Cup linger, too. Jon Rahm is the defending champion from Torrey Pines , while Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick has a shot to pull off a USGA double after seizing the 2013 U.S. Amateur at Brookline.
Arnold Palmer tees off in the 1963 U.S. Open at The Country Club.
Boston Globe
July 14-17: Open Championship
A visit to St. Andrews makes every Open there special, but this one is particularly notable. It’s the 150th playing of the championship that was first contested in 1860. This will be the 30th Open played at the Home of Golf, with Zach Johnson being the last to win on the Old Course in 2015. Collin Morikawa will defend the title he captured last year at Royal St. George’s.
MORE: 10 players who will make you money in 2022
July 18-20: Inaugural U.S. Adaptive Open Championship
With a progressive stroke of inspiration, the USGA will hold the inaugural U.S. Adaptive Open Championship on the No. 6 Course at Pinehurst. The 54-hole event is open to men and women who have a physical, sensory or intellectual impairment. We're looking forward to seeing and hearing the heroic stories for this one.
Aug. 11: FedEx Cup Playoffs begin
At a time in summer when we used to gear up for the PGA Championship, the PGA Tour begins its postseason with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The top 125 from the FedEx Cup points list will qualify before being trimmed to 70 players for the following week’s BMW Championship. The BMW is scheduled for Wilmington Country Club, marking the first time the tour has staged an event in Delaware.
Aug. 25-28: Tour Championship
The top 30 from the BMW reach East Lake in Atlanta, where the FedEx Cup will be awarded for the 16th time. The financial stakes have never been sweeter, with the winner getting a record $18 million. Four of the last five champs have been first-timers. Anyone else like Jon Rahm or Xander Schauffele?
MORE: 8 facts to catch you up on the 2021-22 PGA Tour season as it resumes in Hawaii
Sept. 22-25: Presidents Cup
Pushed back a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the matches between the U.S. and Internationals will be played at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. Trevor Immelman helms the Internationals opposite of Davis Love III, who must be feeling confident for two reasons: The Americans dominated Europe in the 2021 Ryder Cup and the U.S. has lost only once in the previous 13 contests—that lone time coming in Australia.
Dec. 31: Rules of Golf study day
On Jan. 1, 2023, the USGA and R&A will make their next update to the Rules of Golf, the first since the governing bodies modernized the rules back in 2019 . You shouldn't expect a complete overhaul like we saw four years ago, but if history tells us anything, there will likely be a handful of adjustments everyday players will need to note (changes have yet to be announced but will likely come by the end of the summer). Before the ball drops on New Year's Eve, you might take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the 2023 Rules.

2022 PGA Championship viewer’s guide: Tee times, TV schedule, streaming, how to watch
Southern Hills is ready to host its first PGA Championship since 2007.
Darren Carroll/PGA of America/Getty Images
The 2022 PGA Championship, the second men’s major of the year, kicks off this week at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla. Here is our complete 2022 PGA Championship viewer’s guide for the entire tournament, including complete tee times and full streaming and TV schedules.
2022 PGA Championship preview
This year’s PGA was supposed to be contested at Trump Bedminster. But after the PGA took the tournament away from the New Jersey course, an old PGA favorite stepped into the void: Southern Hills . It will be the fifth PGA Championship for the Tulsa course.
The last time Southern Hills played host? Tiger Woods captured his 13th major title with a two-stroke win. The good news for Tiger fans (and golf fans in general): Tiger will be in the field this week to try for his 16th major, which will be his first start since the Masters in April and only his second tournament since his devastating car crash last February.
More surprising is who won’t be there, namely Phil Mickelson , who would be the defending champion after his historic victory in last year’s PGA at Kiawah Island , which made him the oldest major champion in history.
But that just scratches the surface of storylines heading into the week. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will attempt to capture his second major in a row. A rejuvenated Rory McIlroy is eyeing his first major triumph in nearly eight years, and a streaking Jordan Spieth will once again attempt to complete the career grand slam.
Whatever happens, you’ll be able to follow along with virtually every shot. CBS and ESPN will handle the TV broadcasts, and exhaustive streaming options will be available on ESPN+.

TULSA, Okla. — The 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club begins Monday with practice rounds. The first round of the 104th edition of the event tees off Thursday morning, and the final round is set for Sunday.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the tournament’s defending champion, are both officially listed in the field but it’s unknown if either will play the event.
This will be the fifth PGA Championship at Southern Hills and the 14th major golf championship in the state of Oklahoma. The last two majors were on the senior circuit; Tiger Woods won the PGA Championship in 2007 for his 13th career major.
Southern Hills is considered one of the best designs from Perry Maxwell, a world-renowned golf architect who also created Dornick Hills in Ardmore and Twin Hills in Oklahoma City. Southern Hills was constructed during the Great Depression when a group of citizens in Tulsa raised $140,000 for a new country club. Local oil baron Waite Phillips donated a tract of land south of downtown.
Maxwell was known for creating golf courses as cost effective as possible, using contours of the land to shape holes and guide the property. That’s what he did with Southern Hills. It opened in 1936 and quickly became a site for major golf tournaments.

Half a century later, the 2007 PGA Championship came to town. Tiger Woods captured the 13th of his 15 major championships, and since, Southern Hills has gone through extensive changes .
Although the layout of the course is similar, Gil Hanse’s renovation, which took 10 months and cost $11 million, changed the future of Southern Hills while bringing it back to its foundation.
Tickets remain for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday’s practice rounds, ranging from $25 and $45 on the official PGA Championship website. Some Thursday first-round tickets remain, priced at $195. Tickets for Friday through Sunday’s rounds are sold out but can be purchased on the secondary market.

Kids aged 17 years and younger will be admitted free when accompanied by a ticketed adult. Each ticketed adult will be permitted four junior grounds admissions per day for free. Kids will be admitted regardless of a sell-out.
There are 155 players currently in the field. There is one final spot available to the winner of the AT&T Byron Nelson, if he’s not already in. The field includes 16 PGA Championship winners, 34 major champions, three World Golf Hall of Fame Members, four Ryder Cup captains as well as the top-20 finishers from the 2022 PGA Professional Championship.
For the 39th time and the 32nd consecutive year, CBS will have live coverage of the PGA Championship. This year also marks the 32nd time Jim Nantz will call the action from the 18th hole tower. CBS will have 140 cameras and 150 microphones on the grounds to capture the action.
There will also be live coverage on cable TV on the CBS Sports Network. ESPN+ and Paramount+ will offer live streaming.
Per weather.com, temperatures will range from the high 80s earlier into the week and drop to the low 80s as the weekend comes. It will be partly cloudy with winds ranging between 10 and 20 MPH. There is a low chance of rain.
The 2007 PGA, staged in August that year, holds the record for the hottest major championship, as temperatures hit 101, 99, 99 and 102 over the four days.

A Guide to the LPGA Tour's Landmark 2022 Season
- Author: Adam Stanley
It’s a year of exciting changes for the LPGA Tour, and it all gets started this week at the Tournament of Champions — an event that feels like a microcosm of 2022.
There’s a new sponsor (Hilton Vacations), a new golf course (Lake Nona Golf and Country Club) and there are storylines abound at an event with an increased purse for 2022.
And that’s just the first event of the year.
Here’s just about everything you need to know for the season ahead.

Can anyone top Jin Young Ko?
Jin Young Ko was the LPGA Tour Player of the Year for 2021.
Golffile | David Brand
Last season’s Player of the Year went on the heater of all heaters through the summer months winning five times in nine starts after July 1. She admitted at the CME Group Tour Championship (the season finale) that she wasn’t herself after her grandmother passed away in March, but she pivoted physically and mentally through the balance of 2021 and knew that her grandmother would be proud of her accomplishments.
There was certainly much to be proud of.
Ko, 26, finished outside the top-six on the LPGA Tour just once during that nine-tournament stretch in the summer. She defended her title at the CME Group Tour Championship winning the Race to the CME Globe, Player of the Year, shot 14 consecutive rounds in the 60s and topped the money list. She also won the money title in 2020 after just four starts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She is as complete a player as any on the LPGA Tour (13th in driving accuracy, second in greens in regulation, 19th in putting average, and second in scoring average) and will once again be the player to watch in 2022.
What should we expect from Nelly Korda?
Nelly Korda begins 2022 as the top-ranked player in the world.
Scott Halleran / Golffile.ie
For all of Jin Young Ko’s accomplishments in 2021, however, it was American Nelly Korda who ended the year ranked No. 1 in the world.
Korda won four times last season — including her first major — along with the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo. She admitted she ran out of gas at the end of the year (she won the penultimate event of the season but couldn’t top Ko in the finale, ending up tied for fifth). However, there’s nothing that shows Korda, who is just 23, won’t have a similar-type season in 2022. Especially considering there will be far less travel (no Olympics, no Solheim Cup ), the best golfer in the world will now be able to have more opportunities for rest and recovery.
Korda — whose older sister, Jessica, also won on the LPGA Tour last season — was tops on Tour in scoring average, fifth in greens in regulation, seventh in driving distance, and 14th in putts per greens in regulation en route to notching 10 top-10 finishes in 17 events.
While sports fans are often starved for rivalries, Ko vs. Korda is as good as any on the course. Don’t expect a war-of-words to break out, though — they are also two of the kindest people on Tour.
Who are some other players to watch?
Lydia Ko plays the 2021 Open Championship at Carnoustie.
Calum Mackenzie/ Golffile.ie
One of the great things about the LPGA Tour — perhaps now more than any of the last five seasons — is that there are a handful of top golfers who could go on a hot streak at any point through the season.
Here are just a few others to keep an eye on this year.
- Lydia Ko — Won for the first time in three years in 2021 and zipped up to third in the world. Rejuvenated on-course effort thanks to work with Sean Foley.
- Yuka Saso — 19-year-old sensation won the U.S. Women’s Open in 2021 and catapulted herself into the top-10 in the world.
- Patty Tavatanakit — Another youngster who captured a major championship last year, Tavatanakit — who absolutely bombs it off the tee — won the 2021 Rookie of the Year award.
- Lexi Thompson — Hard to believe, but Thompson (who is just 26) hasn’t won on the LPGA Tour since 2019. Will this be the year she finds the winner's circle again?
- In Bee Park — The ‘Queen B’ is getting older (she’s 33) and has had to navigate a few injuries over the last couple of seasons. However, Park still won once last year, ended the year ranked fourth in the world, and was No. 1 on Tour in putting. If she stays healthy, she’ll continue to be a force in the women’s game.
Where are the 2022 women's majors played?
Patty Tavatanakit celebrates in Poppie's Pond after winning the 2021 ANA Inspiration.
Eoin Clarke | Golffile
This year’s major championship roster is an impressive one.
- The Chevron Championship (formerly the ANA Inspiration) will be played at the Dinah Short Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club for the final time before it moves to the Houston area starting next year. This marks the 50th year of this particular major and expect a large, and deserved, send off. It will be played Mar. 31-Apr. 3 and have a $5 million purse. Patty Tavatanakit defends.
- The U.S. Women’s Open (June 2-5) will be contested at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in North Carolina. The last time it was played there, in 2007, Cristie Kerr won her first of two major titles. This year’s U.S. Women’s Open will have a presenting sponsor for the first time (ProMedica Health) and with that the purse will increase by nearly 100 percent to $10 million (it was $5.5 million in 2021). Yuka Saso defends.
- The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship (June 23-26) heads to Congressional Country Club. It’s the first time the women will be teeing it up at Congressional, and it will return again to the storied Maryland layout in 2027. There will be a $4.5 million purse. Nelly Korda defends.
- The Amundi Evian Championship (July 21-24) will, per usual, be played at the Evian Resort Golf Club in France and there will be a $4.5 million purse. Minjee Lee defends.
- Perhaps the most notable of all the major championship venues for 2022 will be the AIG Women’s Open (Aug. 4-7) at Muirfield. Muirfield, which has hosted the men’s Open 16 times, was embroiled in controversy, and only first admitted female members in 2019. There will be a $6.8 million purse. Anna Nordqvist defends.
Tell me about the new LPGA commissioner
Former commissioner Mike Whan moved on last year to take the top job at the USGA (and he’s already made his presence felt, having helped to install the new sponsor for the U.S. Women’s Open along with the purse increase) and was replaced mid-year by former Director of Athletics at Princeton University Mollie Marcoux Samaan.
Samaan has a lengthy resume in sports and leadership and said at the CME Group Tour Championship that she’s gone through a hearty learning process in her first couple months on the job. She’ll now be charged with navigating the Tour’s exit from the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing broadcast challenges (while there will be 500 hours of LPGA Tour golf broadcast, she said in November 2021 she was high on streaming opportunities and storytelling), and the diversity and inclusion opportunities that exist leading a women’s sports league.
Interestingly enough, Marcoux Samaan wrote her senior thesis on “The Social Construction of Sport and Gender: A History of Women’s Golf from 1895 to 1955.”
What are some new rules to aware of?
Brooke Henderson, the world's 10th-ranked player, is one of the Tour pros impacted by the new driver-length rule.
Kyle Terada-USA Today Sports
Things to keep an eye out for on the LPGA Tour this year include two key rule changes.
The first is the USGA’s new rule on driver length. While the reduction from 48 inches to 46 inches impacts fewer than 10 golfers on the LPGA Tour, one of those golfers is Brooke Henderson — ranked No. 10 in the world. Henderson has used a 48-inch driver since she was 15 and will have the biggest spotlight when the rule gets invoked on Tour in mid-March.
According to GolfWeek's Beth Ann Nichols , the LPGA Tour will also allow for non-members who finish in the top 10 in certain events (majors don’t count, neither does the team event or match- play event) earn the right to tee it up in the following week’s tournament. The PGA Tour has long had this rule, and many had called for it to be part of the LPGA Tour’s process, too.
How much prize money is up for grabs?
The winner of the U.S. Women’s Open will earn $1.8 million — more money than all but three players made for the entire 2021 LPGA Tour season. This is a prime example of how much money golfers on the LPGA Tour are now playing for, certainly as compared to years’ past.
The overall purse for the 34 events will be approximately $86 million , the largest total ever. Ten tournaments have announced purse increases with more “expected to be announced throughout the season,” according to a release from the Tour.
There will be swings through Florida, California, and Europe, while events are, for now, set to return to Asia and Canada after the COVID-19 pandemic caused plenty of scheduling problems.
Keep an eye out for the two fun events on the schedule as well this year. The DOW Great Lakes Invitational will, once again, be a team event, while the Bank of Hope LPGA Match-Play will return to Las Vegas’ Shadow Creek.
Finally, fans of the LPGA Tour may shortly be able to get more involved in betting.
The Tour’s daily stats and hole-by-hole data will be available to casinos and sportsbooks through some partners like BoyleSports, Tipsport, and bet365. This effort has been spearheaded by IMG Arena, which now owns the Tour’s official sports betting data and live streaming distribution rights.

- The Best Golf Clubs in…
In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.
The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.
Golf Courses in Russia
The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.
Moscow Country Club Moscow Country Club
The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.
Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club
The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.
Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club
This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.
Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia
Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world. ■
