JetBlue sells what it calls travel protection on its website when you buy a ticket, for an added cost.

Some Massachusetts travelers left stranded by the airline in the last week are finding that coverage doesn't protect them from much.

JetBlue likely won't cover your hotel or meals if they cancel your flight and leave you stranded, even if it's totally their fault. The best they've been offering folks is a JetBlue credit, but that doesn't pay your credit card bill.

Before you pay for a ticket, JetBlue asks if you want to add "Travel Protection."

What you're buying is a travel insurance plan from the insurance company Allianz. However, what it offers may not have the benefits you need if you get stuck somewhere.

Trip delay coverage caps out at a maximum of $300 per person, no matter how many days you are stuck. That provides money that would help pay for a hotel and meals.

One man stuck in Florida for three extra days told WCVB's Ben Simmoneau the cost was over a thousand dollars. He received just $200 from the travel protection.

Another customer who purchased the travel protection told Simmoneau she was exposed to COVID-19 in March two days before flying and was denied coverage because the plan she bought through JetBlue excluded epidemics, even though it had coverage for a quarantine.

"It doesn't cover any COVID, the one that I bought. Epidemics period are excluded," Marianne Jestings said.

JetBlue would not comment on the issues, referring questions to Allianz, who said, "most travelers find the coverage is sufficient."

The bottom line for consumers is to make sure to read the fine print closely.

If you don't like what you see, you can usually cancel travel insurance for no penalty within a certain window.

Vacations, in general, can get pricey. And when you're filling in your credit card information to book airline tickets, hotels, cars and more, it may be tempting to cut costs and decline insurance coverage. Who needs yet another added expense?

But declining to buy travel insurance may actually cost you time and money later on. Depending on the type of travel insurance you purchase, you could end up saving hundreds (if not thousands) if you run into certain situations, like a medical emergency, trip delay, cancellation or another unforeseen event.

Travel insurance usually costs between 4% to 8% of your total trip, per the  U.S. Travel Insurance Association . That's a small price to pay for peace of mind and financial protection.

If you were hesitant to buy travel insurance the day you booked your trip, don't worry — there's still time to get coverage. In fact, most companies allow you to buy travel insurance up to 24 hours before your scheduled trip.

"Typically travelers will wait to buy a policy until they've made at least one insurable payment toward their trip, which can include booking a flight, hotel, tour, or other prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses," Squaremoth, a U.S.-based travel insurance comparison site, explains online .

Can I get travel insurance if I'm already traveling?

If you've already departed for your trip then it's too late to get travel insurance in most cases. However, some providers do provide an option to add on Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation coverage. You should reach out to your desired provider directly to inquire as to whether you'll be able to purchase this insurance during your trip.

Here's some general guidance on when to buy specific types of insurance coverage . In short, Trip Cancellation coverage you can buy up to a day before your trip in most cases. Cancel For Any Reason and Pre-Existing Conditions coverage will need more advanced notice (14 to 21 days after your initial booking date). Just note that these types of policies will be more expensive.

"If you choose to add Cancel for Any Reason coverage to a policy, the premium typically increases by 40-50%. Additionally, some policies have optional upgrades that can also increase the premium," Squaremouth explains on its website.

Most travel insurance policies are comprehensive and cover a variety of issues or scenarios  (such as trip cancellation, lost luggage, delays, etc.), but you may also want to look for additional add-ons. It depends on your specific needs. Take a look now.

Why should I buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance allows travelers to get reimbursed for a canceled trip, delays, medical care, and potential losses like lost luggage or damaged items or unexpected events (as long as you file a claim for these  covered reasons ).

Some countries even require or urge visitors to get certain types of insurance coverage, typically Travel Medical Insurance. The State Department also recommends  that Americans purchase Travel Medical Insurance when traveling abroad since Medicare and Medicaid generally don't cover medical costs overseas. Check your current health care plan to see if you have coverage overseas.

Everyone's travel plans are different and whether or not travel insurance is right for you depends on a variety of factors: your destination, itinerary, health and more. Consider your total trip costs and potential losses if something goes wrong.

"I used to think it was a waste and a little bit of a scam and hardly anybody ever used it," Kathleen Bangs, an aviation expert for flight tracking website Flight Aware, told CBS News . "Now if a family is going to Disney World or Europe, I would recommend it."

Travel insurance is not the same as checking that add flight protection box at checkout. 

"Don't just click 'yes' on insurance when you purchase your flight," Keyes of Scott's Cheap Flights explained  over the summer. "Typically because it's right there and convenient, it's not going to be as robust or cover you for as many things, and you don't always know who you're buying it from."

To obtain an accurate rate, you should contact JetBlue directly or use the company’s online quote calculator.

Those traveling as a family can benefit from purchasing an insurance policy together, as children aged 17 years or younger receive free insurance when traveling with an insured parent or grandparent.

JetBlue Vacations offers packages to destinations in the U.S., Canada, Central America, the Caribbean, and even a few locations in South America.

When you think of JetBlue, you might think it’s another low-cost carrier. But this airline, founded in 2000 to “bring humanity back to air travel,” has become a customer favorite known for great service and an awesome in-flight experience.

This post will show you how to book with JetBlue Vacations and why it’s beneficial to you.

With all of the vacation package options out there, why book one with JetBlue?

  • Best Price Guarantee: JetBlue will refund the price difference if you find the same price for your vacation package on another website within 48 hours of booking. This guarantee only applies to the flight and hotel portion of your package. The lower-priced itinerary must be identical and not utilize any unpublished fares, opaque fares, promo codes, or special discounts. To submit a best price guarantee claim, call JetBlue Customer Support at 800-JETBLUE (538-2583) and choose option 3.
  • Earn Bonus Points on Your JetBlue Vacation: You’ll earn 6 TrueBlue points per eligible dollar on your JetBlue flight and 1 TrueBlue point per dollar on accommodations and car rentals. Taxes and insurance don’t earn points. However, if you are booking with Cash + Points, you will NOT earn any TrueBlue points. And base points and flight segments earned on JetBlue Vacations packages now count toward Mosaic status.

From the home page of JetBlue Vacations , you’ll see a simple search box. Input your departure and destination cities, travel dates, and the number of rooms and people, then click on Search flights + hotel .

The search results page might look a bit different than other websites. You’ll find the sorting at the top of the results and filtering options on the left side of the page.

You can filter your results list by many different options:

  • Price range
  • Tripadvisor rating
  • Star rating
  • Distance from the center of town
  • Hotel type (resort, condo, inn, etc.)

Then you can sort your results by best picks, price, star rating, Tripadvisor review, and hotel name. You’ll find these options to the upper right of the search results.

If you prefer to choose a hotel based on location, you can click on the Map View tab at the top left of your search results.

This is a helpful tool when you know the general area you want to stay in but aren’t sure about a specific hotel.

Each listing in the search results gives you a lot of information.

You’ll see a small price highlighted in blue. While this is important, it’s good to realize that this is the price per person. If you want to know the total package price, including taxes and fees, look at the larger number underneath it.

You’ll see the number of TrueBlue points you’ll earn under the package price when you book the selected vacation package.

To see more details about the hotel, including pictures and room types, click on Choose this Deal .

The next page will be for Hotel Details & Room Selection . Click Select Room at the top, which will jump you further down the page to select your preferred room type. Any upgrades to the room will indicate a change in the price. Click Book to proceed.

You will next be able to select your departing flight. You will see the preselected flights at the top of the screen at the previously indicated price. If you are happy with these flights, click  Continue to Checkout . Otherwise, scroll down.

If you’d like to explore departing flight times, you can see availability at the bottom of this page, including any incremental costs. Select Keep this Flight or Select this Flight to continue.

You’ll follow the same steps for return flights, then click Continue to Checkout .

Complete Your JetBlue Vacations Purchase

Next, you’ll be prompted to fill out your passenger information. If you have a promo code, enter it at the top below the total due and click Apply.

A Trip Hold allows you to hold your itinerary until 11 p.m. EST of the same day for a $25 deposit. If you choose to purchase the held itinerary, you need to call JetBlue to complete the purchase. If you don’t complete the purchase by 11 p.m. EST, your $25 deposit will be forfeited.

You can also reserve your package price with a non-refundable $200 per person deposit with the balance paid later.

Hot Tip: You will select your seats after your booking is complete.

After you decide about trip insurance (more on that below), all you need to do is decide how you’ll pay for your trip and input your payment information. When that’s finished, click Purchase Trip & Book , and your purchase is complete!

Travel Insurance

Right before the final payment step, you’ll be prompted to purchase trip protection . Purchasing travel insurance is a personal choice, and coverage varies based on where you purchase it.

JetBlue’s coverage offers reimbursement from Allianz for a canceled or interrupted trip due to perils including illness or injury. It also offers coverage for emergency medical care while abroad and a 24-hour emergency hotline.

Changing Your Package

To avoid a JetBlue Vacations fee, changes to your JetBlue Vacations package (excluding tours and activities) must be made over the phone at least 1 day before departure . Some hotels have a different penalty period, so be sure to refer to your package’s exact terms.

There are no change fees when you book round-trip flights and hotels together. If the change involves a price increase, payment is due at the time of change.

Canceling Your Package

Cancellation policies vary by hotel, so it’s important to know your specific terms. If you need to cancel your vacation, call 844-JB-VACAY (528-2229).

JetBlue Vacations has eliminated its cancellation fees for cancellations made at least the day before departure. Customers are responsible for any increases to the price (including airfare increases) resulting from canceling.

After the cancellation fees are deducted, the remaining funds will be held as a JetBlue Vacations credit for 1 year from the date of cancellation. These funds can be applied to another JetBlue Vacations package, but not for individual flights on JetBlue.

Bottom Line: Changing or canceling your JetBlue Vacations package at least 1 day before departure no longer results in any JetBlue Vacations fees. Any increase in price due to the change is due at the time of change.

Transferrable Point Credit Cards

Most of the major transferable currencies — American Express Membership Rewards ,  Chase Ultimate Rewards , and  Citi ThankYou Points — transfer to JetBlue TrueBlue points.

JetBlue is a Chase transfer partner  at a 1:1 ratio, Citi transfer partner at a 1:1 ratio or 1:08 ratio (depending on the card you hold), and an American Express transfer partner  at a rate of 1:0.8.

Let’s get to the dollars and cents now. Will booking a JetBlue Vacations package actually save you money? We’ve priced out a few examples to see how the money works out.

The first example is a week-long stay at the Holiday Inn Resort and Casino Aruba Beach for 2 people plus roundtrip flights from Philadelphia (PHL) to Aruba (AUA).

JetBlue’s package deal beats out booking the flight (through JetBlue) and hotel (through Booking.com via Kayak ) separately, but not by much.

The package deal on Priceline doesn’t include identical flights, but they’re similar and direct on American Airlines, compared to JetBlue’s stopovers. With a savings of over $300 over the JetBlue Vacations package, Priceline is the clear winner here. But booking through JetBlue would still save you money over booking the hotel and flight separately, and you’d receive a $125 resort credit.

JetBlue Vacations also has a Best Price Guarantee , so if you find the same price for your vacation package on another website within 48 hours of booking, JetBlue will refund the price difference.

The next example is roundtrip flights for 2 from Atlanta (ATL) to Montego Bay (MBJ) and a 3-night weekend stay at the Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall .

In this example, JetBlue Vacations will save you money versus booking the hotel and flights separately or booking the package through an online travel agency (OTA) such as  Orbitz or Travelocity . By booking this package through JetBlue, you save  over $470 over booking separately and over $60 compared to the OTAs.

You’ll generally not earn any hotel loyalty points when you book through an airline or online travel agency. If you’re loyal to a brand like Marriott Bonvoy or Hyatt and the price difference is negligible, it’s often better to book directly through the hotel’s own website to earn points for your purchase.

Bottom Line: Booking a package deal through JetBlue Vacations can save you money — but not always. It’s a good idea to price out the package separately and through a metasearch engine or OTA like Kayak, Priceline, or Expedia before booking.

The JetBlue TrueBlue program doesn't always get much attention in the points and miles world; however, the points are extremely easy to earn and redeem, making the program ideal for casual travelers. Though redemptions are largely restricted to flights in the Americas, JetBlue expanded its route map to include transatlantic flights to several European destinations .

JetBlue serves more than 100 destinations throughout the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe, including the newly launched service to Dublin .

JetBlue isn't part of any global alliance but has a few airline partners.

With JetBlue being one of the youngest major airlines in the U.S., the TrueBlue loyalty program is a relative newcomer to the points and miles world. The program is revenue-based, so earning and redeeming points is typically based on ticket prices. However, there are also many ways to earn JetBlue points without getting on an airplane.

JetBlue TrueBlue airline partners

JetBlue's airline partners include Etihad Airways , Hawaiian Airlines, Icelandair, JSX, Qatar Airways, Silver Airways, Singapore Airlines and South African Airways. You can earn TrueBlue points when flying any of these airlines but can only redeem points on JetBlue, Etihad, Hawaiian and Qatar. JetBlue also has codeshare agreements with Aer Lingus, Air Serbia, Cape Air, El Al, Porter and Turkish Airlines, meaning you can book flights on these airlines through JetBlue's website, but you can't earn or redeem TrueBlue points on said flights. JetBlue's partnership with American Airlines ended in 2023.

In addition to its airline partners, JetBlue lets you earn points with several other travel and non-travel partners.

JetBlue elite status

You can join TrueBlue for free online, starting at the "basic" level. The four published tiers of JetBlue elite status are:

JetBlue uses "tiles" to count Mosaic status qualifications earned through qualifying spending on JetBlue flights and vacations and/or with JetBlue credit cards .

You earn one tile for every:

  • $100 spent with JetBlue on flights (including many extras and fees), JetBlue Vacations packages and Paisly by JetBlue (for cars, stays and more)
  • $1,000 spent on JetBlue cobranded credit cards

What this means is you could earn elite status entirely through credit card spending, by making purchases with JetBlue or with some combination of the two — and you don't need to step on a plane to do so.

The four tiers of JetBlue elite status are earned by reaching the following tile thresholds:

While working toward Mosaic 1 status, TrueBlue basic loyalty members can choose from a selection of "Perks You Pick" when they reach 10, 20, 30 and 40 tiles. These perks include:

  • Early boarding with Group B (except Blue Basic fares)
  • Priority security
  • Free inflight alcoholic drink (up to three drinks per flight)
  • Double bonus points on a JetBlue Vacations package (one-time use only)
  • 5,000 TrueBlue bonus points

You can pick each of these only once, even if you earn all four tile amounts.

There are many ways to save up for a JetBlue award ticket.

Earn TrueBlue points by flying on JetBlue

When flying JetBlue, you'll earn TrueBlue points based on the ticket cost, fare type and whether you book directly with JetBlue.

Blue Basic fares earn 1 base point per dollar spent and 1 additional point per dollar when booked directly through JetBlue's website or app. Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra and Mint tickets earn 3 base points per dollar spent, plus another 3 points per dollar when booked directly.

No matter the fare type, you'll earn an additional 3 points per dollar if you have any JetBlue Mosaic elite status and another 3 to 6 points per dollar when paying for a flight with a JetBlue credit card.

Earn TrueBlue points by flying on partner airlines

You can also earn TrueBlue points when you fly on JetBlue's partner airlines:

  • Etihad Airways
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Qatar Airways
  • Silver Airways

There are several ways to earn TrueBlue points without flying:

  • TrueBlue Shopping : Earn TrueBlue points when you click through JetBlue's TrueBlue Shopping portal before making online purchases.
  • Avis and Budget : Earn 100 points per day as a TrueBlue member and 200 points per day as a Mosaic member on qualifying rentals.
  • IHG One Rewards : You can choose to earn JetBlue points instead of IHG One Rewards points on IHG hotel stays. Most properties earn 2 points per dollar spent, though Candlewood Suites and Staybridge Suites earn 1 point per dollar spent. Bookings at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas earn 500 points per qualifying stay.
  • Jet Opinions : Earn 400 points for taking your first survey.
  • TrueBlue Dining : Earn up to 3 points per dollar (depending on your membership level) when dining in or ordering takeout at a restaurant participating in JetBlue's TrueBlue Dining program . You must enroll in the program and link a payment card before dining.

How to redeem JetBlue TrueBlue points

JetBlue uses a dynamic pricing scheme for its own flights, so redemptions are straightforward. You can redeem points for any seat on any JetBlue flight across its entire route network. The more a flight costs in cash, the more it will cost in points.

According to TPG's valuations , you can expect a fairly consistent 1.35 cents of value per TrueBlue point. Based on our experiences, the redemption value tends to be slightly lower for JetBlue Mint award tickets.

To check award availability, search for flights on JetBlue's website as you normally would and check the "Use TrueBlue points" option at the top of the search box. Note that you can't redeem points for Blue Basic fares.

For any other fare class, you can redeem points for the entire fare or use a combination of points and cash . The latter option is great if you're short on points but generally doesn't present the best value. Our tests indicate that these redemptions yield a value of just 0.9 cents per point.

Although JetBlue has several airline partners, you can currently only redeem TrueBlue points on Etihad Airways, Hawaiian Airlines and Qatar Airways. You can book these redemptions on JetBlue's site.

Bottom line

While you're unlikely to get outsize value from your points, the JetBlue TrueBlue program is still useful for many travelers. TrueBlue points are some of the easiest domestic airline points to earn and redeem, and there aren't any confusing award charts to consult or capacity controls to worry about.

The program will continue to become more valuable as JetBlue grows its domestic and international network and (hopefully) adds more partner redemptions.

How to File a Claim

To get reimbursed for losses covered by your travel insurance plan, you’ll need to file a claim. Allianz Global Assistance makes it simple. You can file a claim on the phone, by mail, online or using the TravelSmart app. Describe what happened, explain your losses, and upload supporting documentation, such as your travel itinerary and receipts. Then, choose how you want to receive payment for an approved claim.

In this video, we'll walk you through our simple, 4-step process:

  • First, we'll help you identify your Claim Type.
  • Next, we'll gather some of your Claim Details.
  • Then you can Submit Documents to support your claim details.
  • Lastly, tell us your preferred Payment Type for any approved claims.

Begin the claims submission process by selecting your plan type from the drop-down menu, then enter your email address OR your policy number. Next, enter either your departure date or the date you purchased your policy.

Before you click "Submit," take a look at the Claim Documentation Checklist . This will tell you which documents you'll need to submit to support your claim.

Review your contact information.

Did the incident occur during or before your planned event?

Under "Type of Claim," select the situation that best describes your claim. For more details, click the Question Mark icon next to each claim type.

Under "Reason for Claim," select the reason that best fits your claim and then select the date that the incident occurred.

Next, we ask you to briefly describe what happened.

If the reason for your claim is medical in nature, we'll ask you to provide a few more details. Please note that sometimes, additional information is required for medical claims. If we need more information, we'll let you know.

Under "Claimed Expenses," we'll add up all the covered, pre-paid expenses you lost.

Then, submit documents to support your claim. If you don't have everything you need, you can submit your claim and add the documents later. Once we receive your supporting documents, we'll be able to review your claim.

Before submitting your claim, choose how you'd like to receive payment: by check, on your debit card, or by direct deposit. Selecting direct deposit is the fastest way for us to deliver your payment. Once your claim is processed and approved for reimbursement, we'll send payment by your selected method.

Similar to many other airlines, JetBlue recently raised its checked bag fees , but that doesn't mean you can't still travel with checked luggage for cheap.

Luckily, with the JetBlue baggage policy, there are still many ways to avoid paying baggage fees on your next flight depending on your JetBlue elite status , the fare class you booked or which credit card you're carrying.

JetBlue's baggage fees are also very simple and clearly stated, making it easy to understand the additional cost you'll incur on your next flight; let's take a closer look.

JetBlue carry-on guidelines

All passengers flying with JetBlue can bring along one personal item that fits under the seat in front. The personal item might be a backpack, purse, laptop bag or approved pet carrier (if you pay the pet fee ). It cannot be larger than 17 inches by 13 inches by 8 inches.

On top of the personal item, JetBlue passengers who booked a Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra or Mint fare are also allowed a carry-on bag that can fit into the overhead bin. There is no fee for this second bag, although the size can't exceed 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches. Note that these dimensions include wheels and handles.

Passengers who booked the lowest fare ticket — Blue Basic — are not allowed to bring a larger carry-on bag to store in the overhead bin. Blue Basic passengers who bring extra bags or a bag that is too large to fit beneath the seat in front will face JetBlue checked bag fees. JetBlue baggage policy currently lists this fee as $65 for the first or second checked bag and $180 for the third.

There are some exceptions to this policy. You can still bring a carry-on bag to place within the overhead bin when traveling on a Blue Basic fare if you fall into one of the following categories:

  • Mosaic members (who get a carry-on bag and early boarding with all fares)
  • If you're flying on a transatlantic flight (including connecting flights)
  • Travelers combining a Blue Basic fare with an Even More Space seat (on all legs, if connecting)*
  • Active U.S. military members
  • Unaccompanied minors

*Note: If you're flying on a transatlantic flight, booking an Even More Space seat does not grant you any additional baggage other than those already included.

JetBlue checked bag fees

All JetBlue passengers are allowed to check bags. Your fare type, JetBlue elite status and whether you have a JetBlue credit card will determine the checked bag fee you must pay.

JetBlue has two different checked bag fee charts — one for routes within the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada, and one for transatlantic flights.

The chart below will allow you to determine your JetBlue checked bag fee for your first and second checked bag at the airport.

*For flights purchased before Jan. 11, 2024, the first checked baggage fee will cost $30 to $35. For flights purchased between Jan. 11 and Jan. 31, 2024, the first checked baggage fee will cost $35 to $40. For flights purchased before July 25, 2023, second checked baggage fees cost $45.

Unless you book a Blue Plus fare or a Mint seat, are a Mosaic loyalty member, have the JetBlue Plus Card or have the JetBlue Business Card , you will pay $35 to $45 for the first checked bag and $50 to $60 for the second checked bag.

However, paying your checked baggage fees more than 24 hours before departure can secure the least expensive pricing ($35 for your first bag and $50 for your second bag). Remember that travelers with Blue Plus fares, JetBlue Plus cardmembers and JetBlue Business cardmembers only have one bag included, so you'll still have to pay for the second checked bag.

Per the JetBlue baggage policy, Mint passengers can check a bag up to 70 pounds. With the JetBlue baggage weight restrictions, all other passenger bags must be 50 pounds or less to avoid additional overweight charges. In my experience, Mosaic members can also check a bag up to 70 pounds, but this isn't formally included in the JetBlue baggage policy online.

If you want to travel with more than two checked bags, you'll need to pay $125 per bag for your third bag and $150 for each subsequent bag, regardless of your fare type or elite status. Note that on reservations made before July 25, 2023, the third checked bag fee is $150.

You may want to check the JetBlue baggage policy for yourself before your trip, though. After all, some destinations have limitations on luggage — specifically international destinations.

JetBlue baggage fees for transatlantic flights

Although the fee to check a bag is significantly more expensive when traveling to Europe, most fare types include your first checked bag.

However, if you want to travel with more than two checked bags, you'll need to pay $200, 150 pounds or 185 euros per bag for your third bag and each subsequent bag regardless of your fare type or elite status.

Bags that don't incur JetBlue baggage fees

Some items won't count toward your carry-on or checked baggage limit, regardless of your destination. For example, if you are traveling with an assistive device — such as a stroller, car seat, crutches or wheelchair — you can bring it with you for free (although it is still subject to carry-on size and weight restrictions).

Additionally, with the JetBlue baggage policy, all U.S. military members on active military orders and dependents can check up to five bags at no additional cost (and up to 99 pounds each). Those traveling for leisure along with their dependents can check up to two bags at no additional cost.

Overweight and oversize baggage fees

JetBlue charges both an overweight and oversize fee, which can add up quickly if you exceed limits.

These additional fees are charged as follows:

  • Overweight fee (up to 99 pounds): $150 per bag; $150/120 pounds/140 euros per bag for transatlantic flights (bags that exceed 70 pounds not accepted on transatlantic flights)
  • Oversize fee (up to 80 inches, including wheels and handles): $150 per bag; $150/120 pounds/140 euros on transatlantic flights

Sporting equipment fee

JetBlue allows you to check sporting equipment , but some items carry an excess fee.

Golf bags, fishing rods, skimboards, skis and snowboard bags all count as standard checked bags. The fee for these items will follow the same criteria as your first or second checked bag. As long as these particular items are within the weight limits, they will not incur an oversized bag fee.

How to avoid JetBlue checked bag fees

Fortunately, there are many ways to avoid JetBlue baggage fees.

Elite status allowances

All Mosaic loyalty members can check up to two bags at no cost. You can earn JetBlue Mosaic status by earning 50 Tiles.

Tiles can be earned in the following ways:

  • Earn one Tile for every $100 spent on qualifying JetBlue purchases (including paid JetBlue flights, JetBlue Vacations packages and Paisly reservations).
  • Earn one Tile for every $1,000 in qualifying spend on a JetBlue credit card.

Additionally, all eligible travel companions booked on the same reservation with a JetBlue Mosaic elite member can check up to two bags for no fee. For example, as long as one passenger in a family of four has Mosaic status, the group can check up to eight bags for no additional fee.

Avoid checked baggage fees by holding the right credit cards

JetBlue offers three credit cards — two personal cards and one business card. However, only two cards offer a checked bag benefit. In particular, with the JetBlue Plus Card and JetBlue Business Card , you can check your first bag for free as long as you purchase the ticket with your card. This perk extends to three additional companions on the same reservation as the cardholder.

Both cards come with a $99 annual fee. So, even if you only check a bag on three flights each year, you'll break even.

Book a premium cabin

When you book your ticket, there are many fare-class options — each one includes different benefits for your flight. If you aren't a Mosaic member and you don't have an eligible JetBlue credit card, then you might want to consider selecting the Blue Plus fare option. Doing so will allow you to check your first bag for free. However, this fare type is not an option on many routes, so don't be surprised if you don't see it listed.

JetBlue Mint seats also allow you to check up to two bags at no additional fee. And for flights within the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean, you can check a bag up to 70 pounds without facing any overweight charges.

Use card travel credits to cover fees

If you have to pay baggage fees on your next JetBlue flight, know that many travel rewards cards offer annual statement credits . You can use these credits toward various travel purchases, including baggage fees.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers a $300 annual travel credit on anything that codes as "travel" on your credit card statement. You'll also find that many American Express cards , such as The Platinum Card® from American Express , offer annual airline fee credits . However, note that you'll need to enroll before using some of these benefits.

Bottom line

Although JetBlue charges a checked baggage fee for most customers, there are many ways to avoid this additional cost. For starters, if you can pack a smaller suitcase, you can bring your bag as a carry-on and store it in the airline's overhead bin (as long as you don't book a Blue Basic fare).

If you must check your luggage, your first bag will travel with you for free as long as you have a JetBlue credit card.
