It's My Job to Travel for Vogue—Here's What I Always Pack In a Carry-On
Elise Taylor’s travel writing is as irresistible and infectious as the new Passalacqua hotel she recently visited along the shores of Lake Como, set in an 18th-century villa where Napoleon Bonaparte once stayed and dotted with almost-too-picturesque views of scalloped umbrellas and miles of glistening water. The Vogue s enior living writer has spent her professional years reporting on the best of what is new on the cultural front. "I like to joke that I’m the only writer at Vogue who doesn’t cover fashion,” Taylor explains. "Instead, I write about interior design, society, food, and travel—the latter subject allowing me to visit hotels and places around the world.”
The New York City–based writer has spent her professional years of travel writing on a mission: to share her love of travel through a distilled lens. "Although travel writing is fun, it is something I take quite seriously. People read Vogue aspirationally, which means they’re often researching for honeymoons, engagement trips, or once-in-a-lifetime adventures,” explains Taylor. "It’s my job to tell you the places that’ll live up to whatever fantasy you have. I put it to my friend like this: On vacation, there should be no FOMO, no wondering if somewhere else is more fun, more romantic, or a better use of your money. You should be utterly content right where you are.”
Averaging two trips per month in locales as far-flung as the Sossusvlei Desert of Namibia for nighttime stargazing and Paris for couture week, Taylor is a travel veteran who has mastered the art of packing. Amid summer revenge travel, there is no one I’ve been more interested to speak with about how to optimize your carry-on. Ahead, Elise Taylor weighs in on exactly what to pack in a carry-on and the four key items to skip.
Items to Skip In a Carry-On Bag
If you're looking to edit down the pieces you're packing in a carry-on bag, Taylor has some insider recommendations. "Too many shoes, hair dryers (use the one at the hotel), and clothes prone to wrinkling," she says. "Oh, and that one dress that sat in your closet for years that you magically think you'll wear on vacation. Speaking from experience—you won't!"
Ahead, see the nine items Taylor recommends packing in a carry-on bag.
1. Travel Adapter
When it comes to tech gadgets, Taylor opts for optimal functionality. "This travel adapter is honestly pretty clunky and looks like it might secretly morph into one of those robots from Transformers at any given moment. But it can simultaneously charge your phone, iPad, and computer when all three are dying, and you have to elbow a businessman out of the way for a single socket at the Johannesburg airport! So, priorities."
Shop Taylor's pick:
2. TSA-Approved Toiletries
"Here's a packing tip I got from an organization expert: have a toiletries bag full of TSA-approved items that permanently lives in your carry-on suitcase so you never need to worry about forgetting anything," Taylor explains. "Mine includes this Dr. Barbara Sturm skincare set, which includes cleanser and moisturizer."
3. Passport Cover
"Do yourself a favor and don't get a sleek black passport cover. Instead, get a fire-engine red one so you can easily spot it in your bag at all times. Your sanity—and the people behind you in the security line—will thank you."
4. Relaxed Blazer
"Look, if it were up to me, I'd wear ALO Yoga leggings and my favorite sweatshirt on any flight over seven hours. Alas, since I often have to take business meetings or lunches before I check into my hotel, and it's not yet socially acceptable to take business meetings in tie-dye, this sweater-blazer from J.Crew is comfortable enough for the plane yet polished enough to be presentable."
5. Multipurpose Shoes
"Shoes are my packing bane of existence. They take up the most room and are the heaviest items in your suitcase. So having a multipurpose pair—like these block heels, which are easy enough to walk in during the day and can be dressed up for night—are a true staple."
6. Sunglasses
"These sunglasses are chic and big enough to hide the jet lag–induced bags under my eyes."
7. A Versatile Dress
"So far this summer, this white dress from LouLou Studio has been my most worn vacation piece. I've thrown it on to wear to the pool in Lake Como, to lunch at L'Avenue in Paris, and to pick up paper towels at Duane Reade in New York City. Now that's versatility," explains Taylor. "Made of simple cotton, it's also wonderfully easy to stuff into a suitcase, and you won't need to dry clean it afterward."
8. Pared-Down Makeup
"My full makeup bag is way too heavy to lug around while traveling, so I tend to bring a pared-down bag of cosmetics in my suitcase comprised of tinted moisturizer, mascara, a little bit of bronzer, and this Milk stick, which doubles as blush and lipstick," says Taylor.
9. Travel Wallet
"This travel wallet will hold everything from your vaccine card to your boarding pass to your bag tag to your negative COVID test."

13 Best Travel-Size Beauty Products You Need in Your Carry-On Bag
All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Whether you’re on the go for work , visiting your family for the holidays , or just like to have your whole beauty routine in your bag at all times, travel-size beauty products are super convenient. These adorable minis easily fit in your bag, saving you precious luggage space and most importantly, spare you from a time-consuming, sometimes embarrassing search at airport security.
According to the Transportation Security Administration , to pass through airport security, liquid products in your carry-on bags must be 3.4 ounces or less, per the label on the bottle. And no, it doesn’t matter if you have only or less than 3.4 ounces of liquid in a bottle that is bigger that once carried more than 3.4 ounces. The liquid has to be in a bottle that is only able to carry 3.4 ounces or less, or else you may have to throw it out. Another, lesser-known rule to keep in mind is that all of your liquid bottles have to fit in a one quart bag. Without doing a lot of math, you might be realizing that it’s hard to fit your entire beauty routine into that criteria, or even just your carry-on bags.
And while checked luggage is always an option, there’s some other factors to consider when you’re on the go. They might get damaged in transit if the containers are made of glass or another fragile material. Plus, when you can’t keep an eye on them, you might get worried about them spilling all over your clothes and other belongings. And, if you realize you forgot to put on sunscreen before sitting in a window seat on the plane or need to apply some hand cream after being in the dry atmosphere, you won’t have access to your beauty products.
Here at Teen Vogue , our editors have done their fair share of travel, and experienced all its ups and downs. So, over the years, we’ve been able to experiment and see just which beauty products have stood up to the test of travel. We’ve rounded up our favorite travel-size beauty products below, so you can travel comfortably (and moisturized) this season.

So, if you’re short on space, this do-it-all product will help solve a lot of your problems.
Kayali Vanilla Travel Spray
Don’t sacrifice the sweeter things in life just because you’re on the go. Keep a bottle of perfume on hand, so you can always smell and feel your best. This Kayali perfume bottle fits the travel requirements and is still aesthetically pleasing, but if practicality takes priority for you, opt for the longer, slimmer bottle that can easily slip right into your bag.

Gisou mini honey infused hair oil.
Another TikTok-viral product you can take on the go is the Gisou Mini Honey Infused Hair Oil. Just a drop or two can revive your hair, giving it a soft feel and silky glow, especially if you have a habit of tying your hair in a bun when you travel. (Guilty.)

The 8 Key Autumn 2024 Handbag Trends To Know And Shop Now
We may earn a commission if you buy something from any affiliate links on our site.
Themes of practicality and made-for-real-life dressing dominated the autumn ready-to-wear collections, and the autumn 2024 handbag trends were no different. While you can still find personality in the season’s defining styles, there are a few common denominators, like wearability and versatility, that make these new-season silhouettes a worthy investment. Speaking of good investments, one surprising trend that surfaced was, in fact, not a trend at all. Designers positioned a handful of bestselling styles alongside their new collection presentations: Gucci revamped the Jackie, Prada brought back its Cleo and Galleria bags, and to no one’s surprise, The Row featured a Margaux tote in its autumn 2024 collection lookbook.

For anyone looking for brand-new styles, there’s plenty to pick from, be it practical totes, or kitsch and playful clutches. One of autumn’s key shapes, the cargo bag , emerged on the catwalks at Acne Studios and Fendi, putting pockets on the agenda for the season ahead. Minimalist takes came by way of cylindrical shoulder bags from Alaïa, Staud, and Khaite, while XXL boho holdalls arrived courtesy of Chloé and Bottega Veneta.
From bags dripping in charms and keychains à la Balenciaga and Miu Miu to decorative wristlets at Gabriela Hearst, Alexander McQueen, and Prada (the festive season is part of the autumn/winter collections after all!), scroll on for Vogue ’s guide to standout autumn 2024 handbag trends.

Luxe holdalls for the modern woman
Structured top-handle shapes in gorgeous leathers offer a stylish alternative to basic work totes, providing an ultra chic upgrade for autumn. Newly introduced styles from Miu Miu, Gucci, and Bottega Veneta are on our wish list, while The Row’s Margaux, Ferragamo’s Hug, and Prada’s Buckle bags are timeless styles that are here to stay.

The oversized bag is appealing whether you find yourself backing the widespread bohemian trend or not. Case in point: the luxe and extra-roomy shoulder bags from Chloe, Ferragamo, Loewe, Khaite and Bottega Veneta. Boho in nature, these larger-than-life bags are perfect for anyone who carries a lot on the move. Just don’t blame us when you can’t find your keys!

Ladylike clutches
From folder-sized envelopes at Bottega Veneta, to classic handheld clutches at The Row and pouches tucked under the arm at Proenza Schouler, you’ll want to hold this season’s clutches close. Styled with outerwear and sunglasses at Bottega Veneta, the clutch seems to be intended as the same kind of grab-and-go handbag as any other shoulder bag or crossbody, and is large enough to house plenty of your personals. Meanwhile, the pouches at The Row and Proenza Schouler give off a desirable sense of ease, despite having to use your hand rather than a handle to carry, bringing a level of nonchalance to even the simplest of outfits.

It’s always fun to see how personal style and street-style influences show up on the runways. For autumn 2024, it was all about handbags that were decorated with trinkets and charms. Baubles, keychains, tassels, and pouches offered a playful spin on classic leather handbags seen at Miu Miu and Coach. And while you can certainly add your own flair to the bags you have already have hanging in your closet, be it strings of beads or bandanas, brands like Balenciaga and Chopova Lowena offer pre-accessorised styles.

Bags that don’t need an introduction
You know that old saying, “if it ain’t broken don’t fix it”? The same theory applies for handbags – be it those that have stood the test of time, like Gucci ’s Jackie and 1961, and Prada ’s Galleria and Noughties Re-Editions – or have been brand bestsellers for a handful of seasons. Promoting key handbag families while presenting new collections is perhaps a stroke of genius for both the brand and the consumer, proving signature styles’ longevity while perhaps also convincing any new customers these investment pieces are forever in style.

Cargo bags took the runways by storm this season. Exterior pockets make these shoulder bags all the more practical, and well-organised users will be pleased to find a pocket for every need. 24 Lightweight Jackets To Add To Your Summer Capsule Wardrobe
The Street-Style Trends That Will Be Everywhere This September
By Alice Newbold
Photographed by Acielle / Style Du Monde
The September shows are always secretly a bit of a hoot. With freckles still speckling editors’ skin and the faint possibility of an afternoon spritz in the air, there are holiday tales to tell as well as investment pieces to discuss. The street-style looks reflect this dichotomy. Transitional jackets jostle for attention, while trophy bags get the fashion paps craning their cameras, but there’s still the odd colour-pop friendship bracelet here, a souvenir bag charm there…
As the industry gets caught between the back-to-school mood (the promise of new knits! Shiny loafers!) and the desire for an everlasting summer of bubble skirts and boho tops , here are the serious yet ever-so-slightly frivolous looks to expect to see on the spring/summer 2025 show circuit, as dictated by the great and good at Copenhagen Fashion Week —as always, a quirky barometer of what’s to come.
Crisp classics
The tailored cohort do not want to be reminded that they dabbled in the rara skirt trend while lost in Worthy Farm’s fields. It’s strictly crisp cottons, sharp suiting and sensible leather goods in classic colourways from here on in. Tucked neatly in their bags, you’ll find Japanese notebooks and pencils, as per The Row’s quiet luxury diktat , while an Oura ring will be their guiding light as normal business resumes.
Back to basics
There’s nothing basic about dry-cleaning all your button-downs in preparation for the new season. September is all about the simplicity of a great shirt, the preppiness of a pair of polished loafers, and a pressed pair of darker wash jeans, as fashion recentres itself after a summer of bikini-ing round Hydra. Yes, there will still be the requisite ballet flats , which the industry remains charmed by, the flecks of bohemia as decreed by Chloé girls (the “hobo” bag is a good everything-but-the-kitchen-sink style to navigate show hopping), and the sportswear that bridges the gap between suiting and streetwear, but, by and large, there’s a freshening up across the board. Starched whites, after all, look wonderful with a tan.
New-old arm candy
We don’t need to tell you that scoring a Balenciaga City, Dior Colombus or Coach Soho for a snip of the original price is the ultimate fashion brag. Instead of new models, showgoers will be out It-bagging each other with relics from the past—better still, with toy charms clipped on to show that they and their arm candy are well-heeled travellers who have seen the sights and got the trinkets to prove it.
Return of the mac
Some attendees will be praying to the weather gods for inclement climes, so that they can take their new outerwear for a spin without sweating in their trenches. While we’ll have to wait for February’s show circuit to see the key coat trends come out to play, blazers, macs et al suit the school girlish mood when teamed with pleated skirts, ankle socks and flats. Pops of colour are the secret to making these bookish looks feel anything but boring.
Fangirl mode
Autumn is when we see fashion fans double down on the brands they swear allegiance to, but were perhaps swayed from by a flirtatious summer fling. What better way to solidify your look, after weeks of lace-flecked slip dresses and three-striped sports shorts (OK, maybe wishful thinking in the UK) than buckling into that Chopova carabiner skirt (one for the craft girlies), zipping up a Martine Rose bomber or going top-to-toe The Row, as showgoers get back to what they know.
Mic-drop denim
One of autumn’s concessions to the anything-goes summer season fading fast will be all-out denim—the fringed tinsel kind we have Undercover to thank for. Cool kids will be wearing their patchworked Comme jeans and Junya Watanabe failsafes, while others will tap into the artisan mood that’s aeons away from the Y2K look. It’s a fine line folks—no one wants to seem like they’re fresh off the Eras tour when on the front row.
