Russia Tour Packages FAQs

Q. How long does it take to get a tourist visa for Russia, and what is its validity? A. Typically, the processing time for a Russian visa in the general category is between 4-5 working days. For an urgent visa, you need to wait for 2-3 working days. The processing time is the same regardless of the fact that you are applying for a single, double or multiple entry visa. You visa validity will depend on your date of travel, with validity getting stretched to the date of final exit from Russia. All tourist applications are processed through the embassy in New Delhi. Your application submission takes place on an appointment basis. Only for group applications, the appointment is taken as a group. Usually depending on your date of travel, it is scheduled 15 days ahead of your date of departure. Q. Is Russia safe for tourists? A. Contrary to popular notion, Russia, especially large cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, is perfectly safe for tourists. However, it is advisable to be cautious of the surroundings and avoid shady or restricted areas. Q. Which airports has a flight to Russia from India? A. All flights to Russia are operated from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Delhi serves direct flight connectivity to Russia’s capital city Moscow via Russian carrier Aeroflot. There are no flights to Russia from other airports in India. Q. How long should my Russian vacation be? A. Russia is a tremendously vast nation with massive geographical extension that spans from Europe in the west to the far reaches of the east till Asia, and Arctic poles on the north. Firstly, you need to decide what places you want to cover, which any reputable travel agent like Yatra can guide you on that. That said, for most tourists, Moscow and St. Petersburg are the main attractions, and you need a week or so to see both cities. Q. What are the packing tips for Russia? A. For summer, bring comfortable clothes, plus a warm sweater or a light jacket for early mornings and evenings. Do carry comfortable walking shoes like sneakers. Don’t forget to bring an umbrella and a raincoat as summer often receives rainfalls. Pack heavy woollen clothes if arriving in winter as temperatures in winter plummet to below zero degrees. You will need a good fur cap, a warm coat, a scarf, gloves, thermal pants and boots for the snow. Women should bring a scarf or shawl in the bag since they might need to cover their head or shoulders to enter some Orthodox churches. And of course, always look for the weather forecast before your Russia trip to be able to wear the most appropriate clothes. Q. Will I be able to communicate in English when travelling in Russia? A. English is one of the most popular foreign languages in Russia. And, as a tourist, you can easily get around in English in large cities, plush hotels, good restaurants and the busier tourist areas of Russia. But, this is not always the case in regular shops, among public transport staff where Russian is primarily spoken and understood. A local English-speaking tour guide can be helpful in such an event. However, learning a few common phrases such as Hi, Thank You, Please, etc. can make your Russia tour much better. Q. What is the currency of Russia? A. The currency used in Russia is Ruble or Rouble. 1 Indian rupee is equal to 0.93 Ruble. Q. Are vegetarian dishes readily available in Russia? A. Traditional Russian diet is mostly based on meat along with root vegetables, potatoes and flour. However, today, many establishments are catering to vegetarian needs. Cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg have several eateries that serve a variety of salads and vegetable-based dishes, and grocery stores where you will find many meat-free options. Q. How expensive are Russia tour packages from India? A. If you compare with other European nations, Russia is cheaper for Indian travellers. As ruble is almost equal to rupee, that means going to Russia can be easily done within budget. Q. Can Russia be visited in winter? A. Russia is cold and covered in snow for most of the year. It is a good time to visit the country, as many activities are only possible during this season, such as ice trekking, dog sledging, skiing, etc. For instance, you can visit the frozen Lake Baikal over where you can walk, ride a dog sleigh, cross the lake by car, or do a marathon. To the northwest in Karelia, you can do snowmobiles, skiing, or watch the northern lights. You can visit ancient sites and Russian provinces, take a walk in the forest, do horse riding, indulge in a Russian Banya (steam bath) or embark on a scenic Trans-Siberian train ride. These are but only a handful of things you can enjoy in the Russian winter. Moreover, you will get the lowest prices possible on accommodation, entertainment and activities. That said, the warmer months May to August is the best choice to travel to Russia when the weather is beautiful and comfortable to be outdoors and enjoy the attractions. The summer months have longer days, which means attractions in major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg have broader schedules. It is also the peak tourist season in the country.

For so long, Russia ran outbounds under the Soviet system and lots of people still consider it as difficult and inaccessible. Even after all that has happened, Russia has opened significantly, and those who have actually taken a tour to Russia have come back with unforgettable memories formed with their dear ones - whether it is the flashing spires of St. Petersburg, the amazing palaces of the Tsars or merely the haunting and special landscape of the steppes (do not take our words for granted and read genuine tourists evaluations). Here are some of the reasons why holiday seekers from India should go on a tour to Russia:

Location : Russia is the biggest country on the planet, and makes up one-seventh of the world's landmass and spans eight time zones. Not only this, it has twenty-two bodies of water and holds twelve seas within its borders. Its huge and complex selection of landscapes has actually created a fusion of forty national forests together with its forty UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. In Russia, you can find the oldest mountains worldwide, that is the Urals, and the deepest lake worldwide, that is Lake Baikal.

Culture : When it comes to the arts and culture of the place, Russia has actually always occupied a popular name across the global arena. The Bolshoi Theater and Pushkin Art Gallery in Moscow, the Mariinsky Theater and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg- are generally considered to be some of the major art institutions worldwide. History : Russia's history dates back to more than 1,150 years unlike India which holds its roots of history in the mythological era. For its culmination of Viking military management with the aspirations of individuals who commanded the terrific trading paths of Eastern Europe, it has been proclaimed as the largest nation in the globe. When it comes to wars, Russia was delved into more than 100 wars in cardinals, and ruled by more than 120 rulers.

What is the Best Time for a Tour to Russia?

Knowing about the perfect season before visiting a destination in advance, is necessary to avoid any sort of discrepancies coming way. Summers are the best time to visit Russia, which falls in the months of July and August.

Weather conditions in St. Petersburg seem to be lower than in Moscow, that is the capital of Russia. July and August are the hottest months that even vary from 18 degrees to 30 degrees. Winter months are generally January with -6 degrees. The wettest months include October and November.

Weather conditions in Moscow frequently vary from 19 to 30 degrees in summers (July and August) and -8 degrees in winters (January).

The Best Places to Visit in Russia

Lake Baikal, Siberia : Baikal lake is known to the deepest of all other lakes in the world. It is the prettiest and the purest with stunning landscapes and crystal clear waters making the atmosphere serene and peaceful. During winters, you will find this lake all frozen when you can perform ice skating and skiing!

Tips to follow for a visit to Russia

Flight Facility: The major international airports in Russia are in the borders of Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is essential to be acknowledged on your part that direct flights from India to Russia are really minimal, depending on the seasons. The flights that move from Delhi to Moscow and Delhi back are the most suitable both in terms of conveyance and prices. The cheapest trip is counted in the months of November, March, and August.

Packing picks: Carry both cash and cards for both may have their individual uses in certain points of time and in certain places. Get your cash converted into Russian currency to avoid unnecessary problems while traveling to places out there! Call the concerned bank before you leave for vacation, so that there is no obstruction while you are in Russia.

Clothes to carry: Clothes depend upon the season you choose to travel to the place. If your trip is during the summer season, then you can carry lightweight loose summer fabric clothes which will be both comfortable and soothing. If you are traveling to Russia in the winter, then you must carry warm clothes. Do not forget to carry ample sneakers, shoes, jackets, and sweatshirts.

Note: If you do not want to stress for the laundry services, then you can carry more clothes, though laundry services will be provided in the hotel where you will be staying.

Mandatory Documents: If you are traveling to Russia, then make sure that you cannot enter Russia for a number of times on a single entry visa. For this, you will be requiring a multi-entry visa. As the visas have validation of 30 days, ensure that your visa is valid according to your departure date and far from the expiration date as well. Always carry two copies of the documents (passport and visa) before leaving, in case needed at any point of time.

Electric Plugs : Russia mainly uses 2 round European outlets. You can easily find an adapter at an electronics shop or pharmacy offline or online. Russia utilizes 220-volt electrical energy (America uses 110 volts) and most electrical gadgets support both. Look on the back of your power adapter to discover its supported voltage. There, if you see the variety between "110-240 volts", then it means that your gadgets work and gives you a green signal. If it says "110 volts", then it will not work.

Phones and sim cards: To utilize your phone during your travel to Russia, either trigger worldwide roaming or check your phone with the concerned specialist. The first is simpler yet progressively expensive. Opening your phone empowers you to utilize local Russian calling services and methodologies. A phone call made thusly from Russia to India will cost about Rs 60 - Rs. 80/Minute, while Indian cell phone organizations can charge up to Rs.200/minute for overall roaming in Russia.

If you want to purchase a sim card right there in Russia, on the occasion of your visit, then you can easily do it, with your passport acting as proof.

Medication is Mandatory: You can never avoid your health while traveling to a completely new place. Health turning bad is inevitable, so it is up to you to keep your medications inside your bag so that you need not deal with the loss of good health during a stunning trip. If you do not deal with any major disease or health issue, then you can carry the basic medicines that are needed, but if you are on prescription medicines, then ascertain that you have carried them all in larger quantities, to avoid risks.

Tip Offering Regulations in Russia

  • Though offering tips in Russia is a trend in Russia, but the amounts are smaller rather than in other parts of Europe.
  • You can offer some gratuity to your guide who accompanies you throughout the trip or travel to Russia (let’s say, $25 for every 8 hours of work and $15 for 4 hours of work).
  • You can give a tip to the chauffeur or driver who transfers you from one place to another throughout your sightseeing ventures (let’s say, $8-12 for 8 hours of work).
  • Decide your tip to be given to the guide and drivers throughout your trips according to the categorization of a group tour or an individual tour.
  • When you are out for a river cruise, then you will find out a special box at the reception desk indicating you to drop a tip for the crew (drop from $10-15 daily depending on how much you enjoyed your cruise).

Is Travel to Russia Safe?

This is a run of the mill concern, whether Russia is protected and a safe place to visit for a vacation. It's not an underdeveloped nation and the 90s do not exist anymore. Russia has a working power and a civilized, and amicable populace.

Russia is completely safe for you to travel, anyway there are fundamental precaution estimates that you have to take when visiting any nation. To begin with, don't carry your passport with you- either leave it at the hotel or on the ship. Always carry a duplicate of your passport and visa with you. On the off chance that you are stood up to by a Russian police officer (which is somewhat impossible), then show the duplicate of your identification will be adequate.

You can never predict the pick-pocketing activities for which you should always keep an eye on safety measures where you take advice from the guide or representative through the Russia Tour Package or the hotel owner. It is better on your part to not talk to strangers so that you do not involve unnecessary obstacles even by mistake.

Avoid carrying more than $100 with you while you are out for any sightseeing ventures in and around Russia. Keep your cash and card in different pockets, and if possible divide the money with your companion throughout the travel. It is better if you carry all your belongings in zipped pockets or buttoned pockets which keep them safe and make it hard for the pick-pockets to reach out.

Even after so many efforts, you fail to keep your money or any other belongings safe, then do the needful mentioned below:

  • Alert your guide as soon as possible, for he or she will take the necessary action
  • Make a call on the emergency number and then your bank to obstruct the cards that have been stolen.

What are Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis are a spectacular natural phenomenon which appear as brilliant displays of lights across the earth’s night sky. These lights are mostly visible at the highest latitudes near the Northern hemisphere and appear as neon glows, moving arcs or as thin clouds in the sky. The word ‘Aurora’ is Latin for sunrise as well as the name of the Roman Goddess of the dawn, and ‘Borealis’ is the Greek name for the north wind.

Why do the Northern Lights appear?

All right, let’s put our science hats on! The Northern Lights are produced when the solar wind, which is made up of charged particles from the sun interacts with our atmosphere. The charged particles on collision with atoms and molecules in the earth’s atmosphere release little photons of light, which appear as rays of illuminated glowing neon lights like throwing dye in the sky - The Northern Lights. The science behind this phenomenon is indeed very fascinating and we recommend you to experience this in person on a Northern Light tour with Veena World.

In what colors do the Northern Lights appear?

The Northern Lights appear in different colors depending on the gases with which the solar particles collide. Generally, they appear in colors of green, yellow, blue, purple, pink, and red. The most common color is green, due to the impact of solar particles with oxygen atoms. Blue, purple, and pink are rarer to see and are associated with solar particles colliding with nitrogen atoms. Red is the rarest color to see and is associated with solar particles hitting oxygen atoms but at a higher altitude above 150 miles.

When is the best time to witness Northern Lights?

In order to see aurora, the sky must be dark, clear and with high solar activity. The best time to see the Northern Lights is during the Aurora season that is from late August to March in the Northern Hemisphere. During this time, the Arctic sky is dark enough for the Northern Lights to be visible in the right conditions. One has to be prepared to stay up late to witness the grandeur of the northern lights, as these are best viewed anytime from midnight up to sunrise.

Which are the best places to see the Northern Lights?

The best places to see the northern lights are countries located in the far northern hemisphere like Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Siberia. In the southern hemisphere this phenomenon is known as Aurora Australis, the southern lights, which are best viewed from Antarctica and parts of New Zealand in the months of March to September.

How long do the Northern lights appear in the sky on a given night?

This fantastic natural display of light can last from 5 minutes to all night long, depending on the magnitude of the incoming solar winds.

Do the Northern Lights harm us in any way?

The Northern Lights occur so high up in the atmosphere that they don’t pose any threat to people watching them from the ground.

How to photograph Northern Lights?

If you are like most of us, you probably want to capture the Northern Lights in pictures, after all just telling friends that you saw something never has quite the same effect as posting your travel pictures on social media. Some tips that we recommend are: A sturdy tripod, a DSLR camera with adjustable manual mode, latest smartphone with a good camera and inbuilt night mode. All cameras and lenses will give different results, so a bit of trial and error is needed to find out what works best for you. It’s also important to remember that no two auroras are the same. This means that settings which work one night may not work the next. But don’t let that put you off; experimenting with different settings and seeing the range of results they produce is all part of the fun. But remember to ditch the camera once in a while and remember to take it all in!

What are some interesting local legends surrounding this phenomenon?

The Northern Lights have been the source of many myths and legends since ancient times. Some of the most popular are: Most of the Eskimo ethnical groups in North America and Greenland believed that the Northern Lights were the spirits of the dead. Scandinavian settlers, such as those belonging to the Norse culture, believed that they were a bridge connecting the earth and the home of the Viking gods. Sweden sees the Aurora as a sign of good news and prosperity, promising good harvests for farmers and great catches for local fishermen. The Icelandic people have associated the lights with childbirth, believing that the lights would relieve the pain of delivery. The Chukchi, an indigenous people living much further east from Murmansk in Russia, believe the lights are an area of heaven rarely seen, the home of those who died a violent death. Old Russian texts from the 15th century describe the northern lights as heavenly armies fighting. Some believed that the aurora was a massive fire dragon who would descend to earth while the men of the village were away in order to allure the womenfolk.

Why should I see the Northern Lights?

Of all the natural phenomena the world has to offer, the Northern Lights are probably the most spectacular, because to see them you need to be in the right place at the right time. This very nature of the event makes them more mystical and alluring. It is ideal for those with a passion for exploration and is bound to leave you with a feeling of accomplishment. Keeping this in mind, our expert team at Veena World has specially curated Family and Women’s special tours to Iceland and Russia for all of those wishing to tick off this once in a lifetime experience.

Why should I consider Russia to view this majestic sight?

Russia due to its location, with the Arctic Circle crossing a large part of the country provides an ideal point to view the Northern Lights. Russia has many hotspots to witness this phenomenon and amongst them, Murmansk is one of the best ones. Most impressively, Murmansk is distinguished as the largest city above the Arctic Circle, making it a one-of-a-kind destination in the Polar Regions. When this experience is combined with the visit to Moscow and St. Petersburg, it will turn out be a great combination to explore.

When is the best time to visit Russia?

Russia is full of surprises! It is pretty much a country of all seasons. The experiences that you can enjoy in summer or in winter will make you feel like visiting two different countries at different times. Russia In Spring (March – May) March is the time of melting snow, flowing streams and blooming willow. Spring flowers begin to emerge in April and May, making the parks and gardens of the cities quite beautiful. Temperature ranges from -8 °C to 19 °. Spring is the most wonderful season with transformations and changes in everything. Russia In Summer (June - August) In summer, the temperatures around Russia hover between 11°C to 23°C. The days start getting longer in summer, which means you get more time for your sightseeing. Northern cities such as St. Petersburg experience ‘White Nights’ as the sun barely sets at night. Various cultural events are held throughout the city, as well as evening fireworks. Russia In Autumn (September - November) In Autumn, Russia exchanges its green cover for an orange coat with temperatures ranging from -3°C to 16°C. This is a good season to travel around the countryside where farmers celebrate their bounty with harvest festivals. If you’re looking to do outdoor activities, you can go hiking into the mountains or head to the beaches for water sports. The snowfall starts by mid-November and paints the canvas in various hues of white. Russia In Winter (December - February) The coldest time of the year in Russia, temperatures do not venture over the freezing point and remain between -15°C to -5°C. During this time, you will be rewarded with some stunning snows capes that seem like a Christmas postcard. Winter Festival sees the Christmas markets spring up, as well as a celebration of Russian winter traditions such as troika rides, ice sculptures, ice skating and Russian cuisine. If you move further north to Murmansk, you will be treated to the best light show on earth, the Aurora Borealis. So in a nutshell the best time to travel to Russia depends on what you want to see and enjoy. Veena World conducts tours to Russia both during winter and summer to enable you to maximize your experience to this beautiful destination.

THINGS TO DO

Places to visit, russia tour packages from india 2024.

Tourism in Russia is more often a choice between the Golden Ring of ancient cities, or a cruise over a large river like the Volga river; a long journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway, or the most popular cultural-historical-scenic-circuit of Moscow-Saint Petersburg.

The choice among travelers to Russia is predominantly found to be in favor of Moscow and St. Petersburg. And there is a reason why. The answer lies in the vastness of the country and the concentration of its population.

Russia is the largest country in the world and its boundaries span over two continents, Europe and Asia. The vastness of the country becomes evident from the fact that Russia occupies 40% of Europe’s area which is just 23% of entire Russia’s area.

At the same time, the population of Russia is concentrated in one part. 77% of Russia’s population resides in the European part of Russia which incidentally explains its proximity to European culture.

What fascinates the world about Russia is its history and culture, art and architecture, museums and churches, forts and fortresses, and city avenues and squares. And these facets of Russia are most noticeable in the two European cities of St. Petersburg and Moscow.

St. Petersburg had been the capital city of the Tsars for over two hundred years and it shows everywhere. The classy extravagance of the Tsarist period is on display all over the city. Pompous and elaborate in their design, the classical sculpts, the monumental cathedrals, the awe-striking palaces, and the fanciful gardens are staggering sights.

Moscow, The capital city of modern Russia, is the largest and most populous city in Europe. An old city that traces its history eight centuries back, it is also home to some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe that are also its largest financial centers. The imposing public buildings of the city are fascinating witnesses to the might of the old Russian empire and its current world status.

Between them, the two cities take away a chunk of international tourists in Russia. No wonder, the Palace Square of St. Petersburg and the Red Square of Moscow and their surrounding monuments of beauty and grandeur, are teeming with international tourists.

Others. Beyond the popularity of the two cities, there is a large number of places of interest in this vast country. There are 29 UNESCO-listed Heritage Sites in Russia, 18 of the cultural and 11 are natural. While the cultural sites are almost all located around the European region, the natural sites are all spread over the central and eastern parts. While culture lovers flock to the big cities in the west, more adventurists turn to the east for exploring nature. The cruises on the Volga river take you to the ancient cities, the Trans-Siberian Railway takes you through the breadth of the country terminating at the easternmost city of Vladivostok.

The popular ones among the far offs are the biggest freshwater lake, the Lake Baikal, and the Kamchatka peninsula of photo-worthy sceneries and active volcanoes.

While Lake Baikal is 4,342 km from Moscow, the Kamchatka is further over 3,479 km away. Vladivostok, a port city, is 6,423 km away from Moscow. It’s a huge country. Visiting some of the places is a challenge. Planning an itinerary is a nightmare.

Some enterprising ones do beat them all. They take a detour from their Moscow-St. Petersburg beat and head off to the more accessible Kizhi Island to take a peek into the ways of the ancient cities and a ferry ride as well.

Travel smart with our Russia tour packages from India and make your visit to Russia a memorable experience.

Palaces and museums, churches and cathedrals, art galleries and theatres; the city is one of the top cultural centres of the world. The grandeur of the buildings that houses them are architectural wonders and the intricacies of the inside are just stunning and brings out the rich cultural heritage of the city.

The regal avenues and the expansive squares where these imposing buildings are all lined up are a loud declaration of the might and majesty of the imperial powers that build them. It takes the visitors to another time of kings and emperors seeking pompous glory in wondrous monuments.

The natural phenomenon of white nights and the romantic boats in the city canals are an enticement too.

An iconic global city, Moscow has been playing the most prominent role in the development of the country through the imperial days to the Soviet era and continues to do so in the current world. The biggest and the most populous in Europe and the centre of political and financial clout, the city is third on the Forbe’s list of having the highest number of billionaires.

To the visitors, the clout is visible in the form of the top-end fashion labels at the Tverskaya Street, the wealthy neighbourhood of Rublevka, the exotic dining places of Presnensky and the mighty Kremlin.

Take a look at our Russia holiday packages for your visit to St. Petersburg and Moscow. If you are interested in visiting Moscow alone, then we have Moscow Tour Package ready for you. All our tour packages can be customised for you.

An enclosure of wooden buildings and a wooden church with 22 domes that are original to the island, is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Soviets have converted the entire island into an open-air museum.

Think of it. Just one lake provides the world with one-fifth of its freshwater. Located in the south-eastern Siberia, it is the planet’s oldest and deepest lake and a part of the UNESCO heritage.

To the far east of Russia, lies the peninsula of Kamchatka. The peninsula has the highest density of volcanoes of which many of them are active. 90 geysers and a large number of hot springs are concentrated in a basin just six kms long and is therefore called the Valley of Geysers.

A port city in the easternmost part of Russia just 130 km from Korea, is the terminating station of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

St. Petersburg

Just walk. Go for a walk on the streets and squares of the city. Take the Nevsky Prospect, the main avenue. Stop at every corner of those grandiose historical monuments, museums, churches and cathedrals, theatres, parks and statues and let the euphoria of the experience soak in. Don’t forget to take pictures of those beautiful structures.

Take a canal ride. The ride is an indulgent fun and a soothing experience while at the same time you are still taking rounds of the city’s landmarks and bridges.

Admire the Museums. Not only the exterior architecture but do appreciate the collections there. The three million items in the Hermitage Museum are a never-ending labyrinth of six classy buildings. Keep some time for them.

Admire the churches and the cathedrals. Get into the intricacies. Though each of the churches has a reverential splendour about them, they are really made of different architectural styles. The Gothic style Chesme Church, the medieval Russian architecture style Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood and the most sacred Kazan Cathedral are some of the prominent ones that demand attention.

Take a cruise. Take a day cruise on the Neva river and watch all the regal structures pass by. Or take a night cruise and witness the bridges over the river getting drawn up to let the cargo ships sail through. The Palace Bridge is the best with music accompanying the opening. Be part of the revelry.

Wander in the Peter and Paul fortress. If you have the stomach for it, go take a look at the Museum of Wax and Punishment Tools, The Prison of the Trubetskoi Bastion and Museum of Torture. If you are shaken, go to the Peter and Paul Cathedral within the fortress and pacify yourself.

Take a day trip or a detour. Go to Peterhof Palace and be blown away by the grandeur of the row of palaces, gardens, fountains and intricate interiors. Take a detour from the regular Moscow-St. Petersburg circuit and go to the open-air museum of Kizhi Island.

Enjoy a ballet. Don’t miss the opportunity of watching a Russian ballet if you can. A very large number of tourists arrive in the city just to watch Russian ballet. There is so much more to do. Go underground and take a Metro for a day trip to the suburban Mikhailovsky garden and breathe in the calm.

Walk and loaf in and around the Red Square and soak in the marvellous architecture of St. Basil and all the buildings at the Red Square.

Explore the Kremlin. Go around the five squares and twenty towers and the Kremlin gardens within the precinct.

Shop at the Gum or just gawk at over 300 national and international brands. Idle at the number of world-famous restaurants and cafes or chat with the moviegoers at the three different movie halls in the precinct.

Trek up the Sparrow Hills to get a panoramic view of the city

Watch the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera at Theatre Square.

Stroll through the tattoo salons souvenir shops, theatres and cafes on popular tourist place of Arbat street.

Ride the Moscow underground the deepest in the world, and also appreciate the statues and artwork at the stations.

Appreciate Art Galleries like Tretyakov.

Everything you need to know if you’re planning a trip to Russia right now

By Arundhati Ail

If you’ve been scrambling to figure out how to get to Russia after seeing celebrities vacation in the picturesque St. Petersburg on Instagram, it might help to cover all your bases before booking your flights. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re planning on travelling to Russia right now:

What are the visa requirements for Indians in Russia?

Travel to Russia is open to Indian nationals with valid visas, including tourist visas, as well as non-Indian citizens with a residence permit or any other document that proves their right to permanently reside in India.

What are the entry requirements for Russia?

If you plan to fly into any airport in Russia, you will need a medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result, taken not more than three days before your arrival in the Russian Federation. The certificate should ideally be in English or Russian. If not, you can submit a certificate in Hindi, along with a Russian translation certified by a consular official of the Russian Federation.

You will also need to fill out a form provided by your flight attendants and undergo another COVID-19 test on arrival, after passing passport control. You don’t need to wait at the airport to get your results. Some regions may have self-isolation requirements for arriving passengers, so make sure to check with the regional office before your departure.

Which flights are flying to Russia from India right now?

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Emirates and Etihad Airways are running flights from Mumbai and Delhi to Moscow and St. Petersburg.

What is the COVID-19 situation like in Russia?

On 24 June, 20,182 new cases of coronavirus were detected in Russia, bringing the total tally since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,388,695 cases. Moscow and St. Petersburg currently have the highest number of positive cases in the country.

What can you do in Russia?

In Moscow, entertainment and sport venues cannot have more than 500 people at a time. Game rooms and food courts are closed until 29 June, while amusement parks, playgrounds, gazebos and dance floors are closed until further notice. Restaurants, bars, nightclubs, cafes, discos and other entertainment establishments cannot serve visitors between 11pm and 6am. From 28 June, you can visit eateries only if you show a QR code that shows you have a negative PCR result. You can get the QR code with the help of the Immune Moscow service here . Summer cafes and verandahs will remain open to non-QR code holders until 11 July. Find more information about Moscow’s QR code system here .

St. Petersburg:

COVID-19 restrictions are being tightened in St. Petersburg, due to the current Euro 2020 matches that are being held there. Food courts and children’s play areas will remain closed and no food will be served at the Euro 2020 fan zones. Cinemas will operate at 50% capacity and restaurants will be closed for dine-in between 2am and 6am.

Krasnodar region:

In Russia’s beach holiday region on the coast of the Black sea, starting 1 July, hotels and resorts will only accept guests if they are vaccinated against COVID-19 or have a negative PCR report. From August, only vaccinated guests will be allowed into resorts.

Can you travel to England after a layover in Russia?

Russia is on the UK’s amber list of countries. You can travel from Russia to England, as long as you meet all the testing and quarantine requirements. You will need to fill out a Passenger Locator Form (PLF) within 48 hours before your departure. Following this, you will receive a QR code on your email that you will need to present during check-in. You will need to present a negative RT-PCR, RT-LAMP or antigen result taken no more than three days before departure. You will need to quarantine on arrival in your home or at the place you are staying for 10 days and undergo a COVID-19 test on Day 2 and Day 8 after your arrival. Find more information here .

Russia tour packages

Russia covid 19 tourist guide, about russia holidays, russia trip packages, why visit russia.

Russia is a very friendly tourist destination. With luxurious resorts, villas and bungalows, Russia ensures you of a great time during your vacation. The friendly locals happily host tourists and love to introduce them to Russian hospitality.

Russia has been a home to many artists, poets, political figures, and writers. Culture lovers would surely enjoy their time here. Every city in Russia has multiple museums and the towns boast of lovely architecture. Cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg have a number of art galleries where you can spend your time enjoying remarkable works spanning decades.

Apart from Moscow and Saint Petersburg, other attractive places to visit in Russia include the imposing Mount Elbrus, breathtaking Valley of Geysers, fascinating Kizhi Island, and beautiful Lake Baikal. Among these places, Lake Baikal is one of the favourites because of its scenic charms. This lake is the deepest and the oldest on the earth and is known to hold 20% of water on Earth. Surrounded by mountain ranges, Lake Baikal has a picturesque view and stunningly clear water with abundant marine life that is visible. If you are travelling on your honeymoon or to seek luxury then you can easily spend a few days here at any of the quaint resorts.

Best time to visit Russia

Russia is an all year destination. Still the winters are very harsh and not everyone’s cup of coffee or hot chocolate. January is the best month to witness snow and around this time, Saint Petersburg also experiences long nights with day time spanning just a few hours.

Planning your vacation to Russia in the summers will assure you of an amazing time. The days are pleasant and the nights are perfect to take strolls in the city alleys. This season will disappoint you in a way because all the peaks are devoid of snow but on a plus side, the roads are open and water transport is completely operational. As the snow melts from the peaks and around Russian towns, beautiful flowers start blooming everywhere. Birds chirp around and green lawns make every corner of the country gorgeous.

During mid-summer in the northern city of St Petersburg there is no real darkness. This unique phenomenon is known as ‘the white nights’.

Top 10 most expensive cities for expats in 2024

Precious Rongmei , TIMESOFINDIA.COM , TRAVEL TRENDS , WORLD Updated : Jun 27, 2024, 16:09 IST

trip to russia cost from india

As global mobility continues to rise, the cost of living in various cities has become a significant consideration for expatriates. In 2024, several cities around the world have emerged as the most expensive for expats, driven by factors such as high housing costs, inflation, and economic conditions. These cities, known for their economic opportunities and high standards of living, also come with substantial financial demands, making them the priciest destinations for expats.

Hong Kong maintains its status as the most expensive city for expats due to its sky-high housing costs and overall living expenses. The city's limited land space and high demand for real estate have driven property prices to astronomical levels. Additionally, daily living costs such as transportation, dining, and entertainment are also significantly high. The robust economy and status as a global financial hub contribute to its high cost of living.

Singapore is known for its expensive real estate market, with housing being one of the largest expenses for expats. The cost of goods and services in Singapore is also high, reflecting the city-state’s economic prosperity and high standard of living. Factors such as strong infrastructure, efficient public services, and a thriving business environment add to the living costs.

Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich is one of the most expensive cities in Europe, characterised by its high living standards and substantial costs for housing, transportation, and healthcare. As Switzerland’s financial centre, Zurich offers excellent public services, a high quality of life, and a stable economic environment. However, these benefits come at a price, with everything from groceries to dining out being significantly more expensive compared to other European cities.

Geneva, Switzerland

Geneva is another Swiss city that ranks high in terms of living expenses. Known for its diplomatic presence with numerous international organisations, Geneva’s housing market is particularly expensive. The cost of living is further driven by high prices for goods and services, reflecting the city’s affluent status and high demand for luxury and convenience.

Basel, Switzerland

Basel's cost of living is heavily influenced by its high housing costs and the general expense of living in Switzerland. As a key cultural and pharmaceutical hub, Basel attracts professionals from around the world, driving up demand and prices for housing and daily necessities.

Bern, Switzerland

Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is known for its quality of life and picturesque scenery. Like other Swiss cities, the cost of living in Bern is high, especially in terms of housing and everyday expenses. The city’s efficient public transportation, clean environment, and safety are attractive to expats, but these advantages come with a significant financial cost.

New York City, United States

New York City is the most expensive city in North America for expats, driven by its high real estate prices and the cost of living. The city offers unparalleled career opportunities, cultural experiences, and amenities, but these come at a premium. Housing, in particular, is a major expense, along with dining, transportation, and entertainment.

London, United Kingdom

London has climbed significantly in the rankings, reflecting its expensive housing market and high cost of living. The city's diverse culture, historic significance, and role as a global financial centre attract many expats. However, living in London involves considerable expenses for housing, transportation, and general living costs.

Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau is known for its luxury real estate and high cost of living, driven by its appeal as a tropical paradise with a favourable tax environment. The cost of imported goods, services, and high demand for premium living contribute to the city’s expensive lifestyle. Expats are attracted to Nassau for its beautiful beaches, relaxed lifestyle, and tax advantages, but these come with a high price tag.

Los Angeles, United States

Los Angeles rounds out the top 10 with its high costs in housing, transportation, and entertainment. Known for its entertainment industry, cultural diversity, and economic opportunities, LA offers a dynamic lifestyle but at a significant financial cost.
