The team, behind an acclaimed brunch and coffee spot in Lancaster is branching out into fine dining - and bringing something 'never seen before' to its high street.
Journey Social has opened its new venture, Now or Never, in a Grade-II listed building on Sun Street in the core of the city's thriving food scene. Award-winning chef Jeff Marshall and his co-founder Nichola Stock, who also operates as restaurant manager, are joined by head chef Oliver Parry for the ambitious fine dining project. It will see guests enjoy food prepared with the finest Lancastrian and Cumbrian produce.
The contemporary, "hyper seasonal" tasting menu is designed to focus on "nature's larder" in a relaxed city centre space and will constantly change. Now or Never, which follows minimalist brunch spot Kitchen by Journey Social on New Street, opened fully on Friday (May 19).
The team blends together a range of hospitality and cooking experience and expertise. Jeff is a former private chef and a high -end development chef, while Nichola's expertise lies in her passion for service, wine pairing and she is also a keen forager.

Oliver has designed a sharing menu using his skill and bold flavour combinations. Describing the new dining experience on their website, the team wrote: "Now or Never is unashamed in its aspirations to bring something never seen before to Lancaster City Centre and surrounds. We serve a single multi-course tasting menu, with vegetarian options, which will change in line with the waxing and waning of British seasonality and variety."
"You’re very likely to never see the same menu twice, with Chefs Jeff and Oliver firmly rooted in ensuring hyper-seasonality, variety and creativity across the menu…….. If you see something that you want to eat on our menu, then it really is Now or Never."

Chef Jeff Marshall and his front of house counterpart Nichola Marshall say that Now Or Never has been designed to ‘cleverly challenge the modern British culinary norm by introducing Japanese and Middle Eastern flavours and techniques whilst utilising hyper-local and seasonal British ingredients’.
Seating 20, the restaurant operates evenings-only Thursday to Saturday offering a 10-course menu priced at £80 per person.
Dishes include fat cow and chive; cod, cockle and salsify; lamb and allium; blood orange and yoghurt; and white chocolate and pistachio.
The restaurant’s name reflects the use of ‘ever-changing hyper-seasonal’ ingredients with suppliers including asparagus from Claremont Farm on the Wirral; strawberries from Annabel’s, Micklefield, Yorkshire; late-season rhubarb from Greenbank Farm, Carnforth, Lancashire; scallops from Orkney; and lamb from the southern Lake District fells.
The drinks list features wines, beers and spirits from producers from the UK, Europe and further afield, who utilise biodynamic and organic minimal intervention practices. A wine pairing priced at £45 per person is available.
“We opened the doors of Journey Social five years ago, and we’ve steadily built up a reputation for what we do, delivering exemplary service using the finest quality ingredients,” Jeff says.

When it comes to perfect pours and artfully compiled brunches, the benchmark at this Lancaster hotspot is set high. Journey's founders poured huge amounts of energy into the creation of their contemporary new space - they assembled the brew bar by hand and even stamped each table with the logo – so it's fitting that their team are equally enthused about crafting excellent coffee and drool - worthy dishes.
The kitchen crew are masters of the brunch universe: everything is made from scratc h, from the fruit syrup drizzled over fat slices of sugar - dusted French toast to the perfectly poached eggs.
Journey Social has enjoyed a fantastic first two years, exemplified by winning ‘Lancashire’s Best Café 2019’ and recently featuring in the ‘Indy C offee Guide’. All the team at Journey Social can’t wait to see you back when they reopen.

Education and counseling students take away lifelong memories from kenya trip, by lilly rutkowski (’25).

Home | Blog | Education and Counseling Students Take Away Lifelong Memories from Kenya Trip
In May 2024, Lancaster Bible College Education and Counseling & Social Work students embarked on a life-changing journey to Kenya, partnering with The Kenya Project while there. This ministry located in the Rift Valley of Nakuru operates a school of approximately 550 students as well as an orphanage housing about 90.
Part of LBC’s annual Journey Team trips, students worked alongside The Kenya Project to help fulfill the ministry’s mission to “provide opportunities for children of Kenya to know and experience the love of God through support to meet their health, educational and spiritual needs.”
“It is so hard to choose a favorite memory because it was all so good!” said Brooke Benjamin (’27) , a student in LBC’s 4+1 BS/MEd Early Childhood/Special Education program , which enables students to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years total. “Two of my favorite parts were walking across the street [to visit] Upendo (Love) Children’s Home and bunk bed talks in the high school girl’s dormitory at night.”
LBC students worked alongside teachers, assisting in the classroom as well as throughout other facets of the ministry, including a technical school, sports and grounds.
“While at the children’s home, I would be crowded by kids who reached into my backpack to grab all the sweets and stickers I had brought,” Benjamin added. “We would take selfies, blow bubbles, dance to music and play with the parachute; it was so fun! God is so good and is doing amazing things at Nakuru Mountain Park Academy.”
Students also had the opportunity to take part in a safari due to the ministry’s location near several amazing national parks.
Each year, LBC Journey Teams travel to the furthest corners of the world to live out the gospel message by bringing hope to the hopeless. Whether working at an orphanage in Haiti, helping to build a church in Jamaica, teaching English in Germany, doing sports camps in the Philippines or being involved in street evangelism in Thailand, the service of these teams leave a lasting impact on the places they visit and the people they meet—not to mention on the lives of the individual team members. Trips are planned throughout the year and are open to all LBC students to participate.

Social Work Faculty Advances Research on Digital Postpartum Support Systems
- Published June 27, 2024

Share news:
Lexington, KY (June 27, 2024) – Depression and anxiety are serious mental health concerns for many new mothers, with postpartum depression (PPD) being the most common complication associated with childbirth. Dr. Aubrey Jones, an associate professor at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work, has recently published a study exploring the impact of digital connection among new mothers.
This research , titled “Creating, Connecting, and Communicating: A look at social support for postpartum women,” offers an in-depth look at the formation, activities, and evaluation of an online support group for mothers within three months postpartum.
Co-authored by Diana Frankenburger, MSN, a childbirth educator with UK Healthcare, the study is centered around “Fourth Trimester Support Group,” a weekly Zoom meeting designed to provide a communal space for new mothers to discuss their experiences.
“As a woman becomes a mother, her relationships change and her priorities shift, often leading to a need for new or different relationships in her life,” the authors write. “For first-time mothers, this can be especially important.”
To recruit participants, UK hospital’s marketing team developed flyers, posted sign-up links on the hospital website, and advertised the group in birth education classes. Each support group session began with participants sharing their birth stories, a ritual that helped to foster a sense of community and belonging, and one that gives important context for how their motherhood journey began, and what support they might need.
“On occasion, a new attendee may have a traumatic birth story, and the facilitators will check in with the attendee or refer them to other group members with similar stories to offer support” Jones said. “Postpartum mental health is complex. It’s important that anyone facilitating a group like this has professional training if circumstances arise that need extra layers of support or even intervention.”
Jones’ extensive research portfolio emphasizes health equity for women and families, particularly in rural settings. She recently co-authored “Over the Hills and Through the Hollers: how one program is assisting residents in Appalachia with opioid use recovery” published in the Journal of Appalachian Health alongside colleague Dr. Aaron Brown.
Jones is also a member of the 4th cohort of the Research Scholars Program (RSP) , which focuses on transforming healthcare perspectives based on the University of Kentucky’s health-related transdisciplinary Research Priority Areas (cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes & obesity, equity, neuroscience, and substance use).
“In conclusion, the journey into motherhood is a profound transition marked by joy, uncertainty, and significant changes in identity” Jones writes. “I’m hopeful that this research can provide a framework for advancing postpartum healthcare perspectives. Through reflective evaluation and continuous refinement, online support groups can adapt to meet the evolving needs of participants.”
For over 85 years, the College of Social Work (CoSW) at the University of Kentucky has been a leader in education. Our mission is clear: Through rigorous research, excellence in instruction, and steadfast service, the CoSW works to improve the human condition. Always, in all ways.
