Dave Coulier is a big part of family television. As an Actor, Director, Writer and Comedian he has participated in many of our favorite shows.

From his central role as Joey Gladstone on the Full House and Fuller House hit series, through voice work on renowned animation shows like Scooby Doo, The Jetsons, American Dad, Robot Chicken and more, he has entered our homes and provided joy, happiness and connection.

One of Dave’s most rewarding experiences was working with Jim Henson on the hugely successful animated hit, Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies, which was a 4-time Emmy Award Winner for Best Animated Series for CBS. Another highlight was voicing the character of Peter Venkman on ABC’s The Real Ghostbusters .

As a host, Dave’s first show was Out Of Control on Nickelodeon. While co-starring on Full House , Dave hosted America’s Funniest People and World’s Funniest Videos for ABC. Dave, being a big hit with families worldwide, also hosted Animal Kidding for Animal Planet and America’s Most Talented Kids for the i/PAX Network.

He has directed several episodes of Fuller House for Warner Bros. Fuller House aired on Netflix and has won the People’s Choice , Kid’s Choice and Teen Choice awards for Favorite Family Sitcom. Fuller House was also nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children’s Program. That same season, Dave received a GLAAD Award nomination for the episode he directed titled, “The Prom.”

Dave’s been a spokesman and starred in his own, hilarious GEICO ad for television. He has been a brand ambassador for General Mills, being featured on the cover of Cheerios for General Mills “Box Tops For Education” program with his trademark “Cut it Out.”   Dave starred with John Stamos and Bob Saget in a hysterical Super Bowl TV commercial for Dannon Oikos Yogurt.

Dave can also be seen on The Zen Diaries Of Garry Shandling on HBO and The Comedy Store docu series on Showtime.

Dave co-founded and launched Grilled Cheese Media with animator Bob Harper, partnering with CyberGroup Studios for their first animated TV production titled, Yum Yum .  In 2021, Dave completed his standup comedy tour of 24 Air Force Bases across the USA.

Dave is starring in and Executive Producer on the TV series Live+Local for Sony Affirm now streaming on Pureflix. Dave resides in his home state of Michigan with his wife, photographer and producer, Melissa and their dogs Shorty and Ziggy. In his free time, Dave participates in other interests including flying airplanes (he is an instrument rated pilot), boating, building and remodeling homes, working with his tractor on his property, playing ice hockey, golfing, and fishing.

Interview: Dave Coulier. Cut. It. Out.

Dave Coulier, best known as the lovable “Joey Gladstone” on the smash 90’s sitcome, ‘Full House,’ is back on the road doing his first love, stand up comedy.

Dave phoned our hotline in advance of his Cleveland engagement to reminisce about his Full House days and talk about his post-sitcom star life.

CleveRock: How is your current tour going? Are you debuting any new material?

Dave Coulier:  “The material is always a work in progress. Stand-up is one of those things where you always have to be out writing new stuff, so that’s what I’m doing!”

CleveRock:  I know you pride yourself on being one of the “clean” comedians currently doing stand-up. Why did you decide to go that route?

Dave Coulier: “Well it wasn’t such a conscious choice many years ago when I first started. My goal was to get on ‘The Tonight Show’ with Johnny Carson, and when I did my first stand-up on the show, it had to be clean, and I have just never veered away from that. I think the world has so much vulgar comedy that it’s nice to offer people the alternative of, ‘look, if you want to come out and not hear F-bombs hurled every other joke, then this is the show for you!’ I’m not reinventing the wheel. We have been watching clean stand up material for years on ‘The Tonight Show’ and Letterman for years. My sets are just ones that I would be comfortable doing on national television. If you look at the biggest touring comics today: Jim Gaffigan, Brian Regan, Seinfeld; these guys aren’t hurling F-bombs. They are working clean and they are selling out 5,000 seats. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that there is a huge market for people who want to come and laugh and don’t want to feel uncomfortable.”

CleveRock:  You are a very successful voice-over artist. Is this a natural talent that you were blessed with, or is it a talent that you had to work hard to develop?

Dave Coulier: “When I was younger, I wouldn’t call it be me being ‘blessed.’ It got me into a lot of trouble in school. It just made me laugh. I’ve been a jock my whole life, I’ve always played hockey . When you have twenty guys sitting around putting on hockey gear it’s a captive audience, so I would do impressions of coaches and fellow players or other people that guys on the team knew and everyone would just crack up. That’s really how I got started, was doing locker room comedy. I just did voices that made guys laugh. I do have to work on it. Especially when I’m pitched a new series. Disney is pitching me a new series right now and they are very specific about what they want, and it’s my job so that when they are listening in their heads they go, ‘Ah, that’s the character, that’s what we want. That’s exactly how this character should sound.’ I have to work at that sometimes to tweak it. Other voices come easily and those are wonderful moments when that happens. But, some I really have to work at.”

Dave Coulier Gushes Over His ‘Full House’ Legacy, Life With Wife Melissa and Future Projects

There are very few places on the planet where Dave Coulier doesn’t get recognized. “ Full House has never been off the air since 1987 and we’ve aired in over 100 countries. It is also streaming, so it’s hard to get away from,” the actor and stand-up comedian, who played the show’s goofy Joey Gladstone, tells Closer Weekly in an exclusive interview, on newsstands now.

“But I’ve never wanted to get away from Full House . I adore the show and it’s been a love affair with that character.” In fact, the 61-year-old star returned to the role of Uncle Joey in 2016 on Fuller House , a continuation of the original series, which completed its fifth and final season on Netflix in 2019. “They say you can’t go home again, but we got to go back home,” he says.

For the past few months, while Dave’s stand-up comedy tour has been grounded due to COVID-19, he and his wife, photographer Melissa Bring , have been renovating their family home in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Dave has also been working to launch his own family-friendly TV comedy series, Uncle Dave’s Laugh Emporium .

It sounds like you’ve been keeping busy during the pandemic!

My wife and I just moved into a home that we remodeled right when COVID hit. So it was actually kind of — I don’t want to say nice — but it was a very convenient time to be locked in a home. We were tearing down walls and ripping out carpeting and doing construction work.

And the new house is in the town where you grew up?

Yeah, we’ve been out of California for almost two years. I’m originally from Michigan and my family is still back here. We’ve been visiting for many summers and then we found this incredible lakefront property.

Has your hometown changed a lot since your childhood?

Everybody I went to school with is much larger! And the guys have less hair! But in a lot of ways, I wanted to come back here because it hasn’t changed a lot. It has a simple tone that doesn’t exist in New York or Los Angeles. It’s very refreshing to get back to a pace that’s nicer.

Was there a moment in your childhood that set you on the path to comedy?

I’d been a hockey player since I was 8 years old and I could always do impressions of the other player or coaches. Sitting in a locker room with an audience of 20 was where I discovered that funny could be a rewarding thing. I also had a partner in crime, Mark Cendrowski . We have been friends since third grade and now he’s a huge television director. He’s directed every episode of The Big Bang Theory .

You became a stand-up comedian when you were 18. Is it true that you were almost hired for Saturday Night Live ?

Yes. I was so excited. Of course, I told everybody in my life that I was going to New York to be on SNL , but then right before I was supposed to go, I got fired! I never even stepped on the stage! It turned out to be a very good thing. If I had gone to New York that season, I would never have gotten the script for Full House . So be careful what you wish for.

It always seemed that the Full House cast got along so well.

We have always been a tight-knit family, off-camera as well as on. I’ve known Bob Saget since I was 18 years old. And John Stamos and I instantly bonded. The week we did the pilot, we made each other laugh so hard. We thought, OK, we’re friends for life.

So you had no hesitation about going back and playing Joey in the reboot Fuller House ?

No, it was an incredible experience. It seemed as though no time had passed. All the same silly innuendos and jokes from Full House were brought to Fuller House .

Lori Loughlin, who played Becky, had to leave the show after she was indicted in the college admissions scandal.

Lori is family. I love her dearly and we’ve all been very supportive of her and her husband. It’s very unfortunate the way things played out , but you couldn’t know a more loving, caring or wonderful person than Lori. It all makes me very sad.

On a happier note, did you really introduce Candace Cameron to her husband, Valeri Bure?

I did! Her husband and his brother are both from Russia and they were playing in this charity hockey game with me in Los Angeles. I brought Candace and Lori to the game. She and Val just — it was kind of like in that moment in Lady and the Tramp where they are both going after the same piece of spaghetti. It was quite lovely to watch. They fell instantly for each other. Now they have three kids !

How about you? How did you and your wife Melissa meet?

We’ve been together 15 years and married for [six]. I met her in Montana on a guys’ trip. We were just out at a bar and I was sitting in a booth. She walked by and I stuck my foot out while telling a story. I accidentally tripped her! She ended up joining us and we just hit it off.

What makes your marriage work?

We laugh a lot. We’ve been through friends getting married or divorced and babies being born and family members dying. Through all those times, we’ve found a way to find the silver lining by laughing.

What is left on your bucket list?

I want to build my next house. I want to be the contractor. I also want to produce more family television. I really feel as though there’s a void for quality programming for families — shows like Full House . I created a show called Uncle Dave’s Laugh Emporium . It’s kind of my version of Pee-wee’s Playhouse . And so I’m with a new company called InventTV. We’re going out and doing pitches with that show.

Do you plan to do more stand-up?

Oh, yeah. I was doing a lot of college dates. I also had a tour of 24 U.S. Air Force bases that was postponed, but we hope to start again in March of 2021.

KALAMAZOO, MI - A child actor from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is coming to Kalamazoo for a screening of the film.

Ellen Latzen, who played “Ruby Sue” in the 1988 Christmas comedy classic starring Chevy Chase, will be at the Kalamazoo State Theatre on Saturday, December 14 for a VIP meet-and-greet opportunity and pre-show conversation.

There will also be a “Christmas Vacation” costume contest. Prizes include a one-year membership in the jelly-of-the-month club from Kalamazoo’s Bilberry Jams and Jellies .

TICKET INFO

All seating is general admission with tickets going on sale on Thursday, July 25 at 10 a.m . Tickets are $13 in advance through December 6 and $17 the week of the show. $11 student tickets are available at the box office only.

VIP meet-and-greet tickets with Latzen are $65 and include a photo op, signed poster, drink ticket, reserved seating and early entry.

Comedian Dave Chappelle announces fall dates for US comedy tour. See when he comes to Ohio

Comedian Dave Chappelle is hitting the road this fall in a stand-up comedy tour called Dave Chappelle Live.

The news was reported exclusively on the July 25 episode of NBC's Today Show .

The tour, produced by Live Nation, kicks off in August with a pair of shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City and concludes in early October at the United Center in Chicago.

The tour includes stops in Detroit, New Orleans and Nashville, among other locations.

Local presale tickets will be available on July 26, while the general sale begins July 27 at 10 a.m. local time through Ticketmaster .

Dave Chappelle's 'The Closer' controversy

Dave Chappelle, who lives in Yellow Springs, Ohio, came under fire in 2021 for his Netflix standup special "The Closer." The special provoked backlash due to his remarks about the LBGTQ+ community , in particular his focus on the transgender community.

In the special, Chappelle resurfaced a December 2019 controversy in which “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling drew backlash  after conflating sex with gender  and defending ideas suggesting that changing one's biological sex was a threat to her own gender identity.

Chappelle also attempted to paint a juxtaposition between the pace of civil rights gained by the LGBTQ community and those fought for by the Black community.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended his decision to keep the special on the streaming service amid internal criticism from company employees.

Sarandos sent a staff memo at the time pledging Netflix's commitment to the special, citing Netflix's work in supporting their talent's creative freedom.

Sarandos' support of the special led to a walkout from a group of Netflix employees in 2021, a gesture that was amplified by emotional pleas from supporters of the walkout who rallied outside company headquarters.

The employees said company executives dismissed their concerns that Chappelle's comments in "The Closer" could lead to violence against the trans community.

At the time, two employees, one transgender and one non-binary, filed labor charges against the streaming giant alleging the company retaliated against them for speaking out aboutChappelle's special.  

Hours before the walkout, Netflix shared a statement with USA TODAY: "We value our trans colleagues and allies, and understand the deep hurt that’s been caused. We respect the decision of any employee who chooses to walk out, and recognize we have much more work to do both within Netflix and in our content.”

"I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames this that it's me versus that community, that is not what it is," Chappelle said in a 2021 Instagram clip. "Do not blame the LBGTQ (sic) community for any of this (expletive). This has nothing to do with them. It's about corporate interest, and what I can say, and what I cannot say."

"The Closer" received two Primetime Emmy nominations in 2022, including outstanding variety special (pre-recorded). Stan Lathan was also nominated for outstanding directing of a variety special for his work on "The Closer."

After the Emmy nominations were announced, people on social media voiced their frustration and criticized the decision to give further recognition to Chappelle's Netflix special. 

Dave Chappelle attacked onstage

In May 2022, Chappelle was attacked onstage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles during the Netflix Is A Joke festival.

An audience member stormed the stage asChappelle, 48, was exiting the stage after his performance, lunging at him and tackling him to the ground, according to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department. 

The man also pointed a replica handgun, which contained a knife blade, at Chappelle during the encounter, resulting in a charge for assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

The man was identified as Isaiah Lee and in December 2022, he was sentenced to 270 days in county jail.

Dave Chappelle hosting 'Saturday Night Live'

In November 2022, Chappelle hosted "Saturday Night Live" for a third time, and the reception was not warm.

"SNL" writer Celeste Yim shared a seemingly pointed message after Chappelle was announced as host. "I'm trans and non-binary. I use they/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it should be condemned,"  they wrote on their Instagram Story  alongside a photo from work, captured by a Reddit screenshot. 

The hosting gig also came on the heels of "SNL" having just recently hired its first nonbinary cast member, Molly Kearney, just months before.
