How to Take the Best Road Trip Across the U.S. and Have Perfect 70-Degree Weather All the Time

Climate scientist Brian Brettschneider shared an all-new map for 2023.

preview for 11 of the Most Beautiful Places in the US

Brian originally created a perfect weather road trip map back in 2015. That map was based on the 1981-2010 temperature information released by the National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI). "That map was a hypothetical trip through the U.S. with the route tracking where the normal daily high temperature was approximately 70°F (21°C). I have been contacted numerous times over the years since from people who want to bike or drive the trip. It has resonated with people in a way I never imagined," Brian says on his blog .

Now, he has released a new map with the 1991-2020 averages from the NCEI. His original map had just one route, but his updated version includes three options: A coastal route, an interior U.S. route, and a third option that includes the U.S. and Canada, with a stop in Alaska.

70 degree map road trip

Brian's blog gives step-by-step directions for the year-long trip. The coastal and interior routes are both over 7,000 miles. The coastal version begins in Tampa, Florida, and travels all the way to San Diego, California. The interior map takes road trippers from Corpus Christi, Texas, to San Diego.

70 degree road trip map with canada

Brian's U.S. and Canada version comes in at almost 14,000 miles and includes a stop in Fairbanks, Alaska, still keeping the temperature at 70 degrees at every stop along the way.

Now, the only thing left to do is gas up the car and hit the road! You'll want to roll down the windows and blast your favorite road trip playlist .

Spend a whole year in 70-degree weather with this road trip

Packing our bags!

Open road with perfect weather

  • Kathleen St. John
  • October 11, 2021

The perfect temperature: You know it when you feel it, and for most of us, it’s around 70 degrees Fahrenheit .

If you’ve ever wanted the weather to just stay at 70 degrees, then gas up the old RV and check out the map for this dreamy road trip across the United States and into Canada.

Developed by climatologist Brian Brettschneider , the jaunt takes drivers along a path of 70-degree days as the seasons shift across the continent. Brettschneider developed the road trip map in 2015 by sampling almost 30 years of  “normal” temperatures at every weather station in the U.S. and Canada.

70 degree tour

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this 13,235-mile route begins as far south as possible — way down in Brownsville, Texas, on the Mexican border. Because most of the U.S. stays cold in the winter, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the Lone Star State (three months!) before heading north with warmer weather.

Through the spring, there’s some noodling around the South and Mid-Atlantic until it starts to get too hot in the summer. Then it’s off to Canada and Alaska for a couple months!

Fall and early winter have you covering lots of ground, from the Pacific Northwest to a big swing through the Midwest and Southwest. On Dec. 31, you should be sipping champagne in San Diego.

Want to save on mileage? Brettschneider’s got you covered. He tweeted this map that skips the journey to Canada and Alaska:

Road-trip route where high temperature is always at, or very near, 70°F. #FunWithClimate pic.twitter.com/wkJsu0a1mE — Brian Brettschneider (@Climatologist49) August 17, 2015

This U.S.-only version of the trip is about 4,000 miles shorter. Instead of trekking all the way up to Alaska to avoid the summer heat, you’ll spend the hottest months in Colorado’s high country . (It stays pretty cool when you’re thousands of feet above sea level.)

The final months of the year take drivers through more mountain states and the Midwest before hitting that final leg toward New Year’s Eve in San Diego.

What a fun way to spend a year on the road! Here’s to lots — and lots — of sunny days ahead.

On this year-long, cross-country trip, the weather will always be a perfect 70 degrees

  • An Alaskan climate scientist has created the perfect weather road trip.
  • Brian Brettschneider's "70°F Road Trip" map will have you following the best temperatures.
  • The US route starts in Texas, loops up and over the East Coast, into Oregon, and ends in California.

Sick of bad weather on vacation? Try this year-long, cross-country road trip where the weather should always be a perfect 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Alaska climate scientist Brian Brettschneider released a "70°F Road Trip" map that will take you on a trek across the contiguous US chasing the best temperatures where the high hits an average of 70 degrees.

"People have gotten in a car or a camper or a train, and they've watched the world pass by," Brettschneider told NPR. "So this is a way to kind of reinvigorate a road trip in a way that people really haven't ever really thought about before."

Brettschneider created three US routes for the perfect weather trip: one that hugs the coasts, one that carves up the interior of the nation, and a third route that connects the two for the ultimate not-too-hot, not-too-cool road trip.

The longest combined US trip starts in Brownsville, Texas on New Year's Day and takes you up through Texas, reaching Little Rock, Arkansas by April. From there, road trippers swing east to Memphis, Tennessee, and over to the nation's capital, Washington, DC.

In May, you'll take I-95 north to Boston before a two-month trek through Michigan, then Montana, and over to Seattle, Washington along the Pacific coast.

You'll spend the summer up in Oregon before diving over into Idaho and Utah in September. Finally, take a right at Albuquerque, New Mexico in October to reach Flagstaff and Phoenix, Arizona in November — then ring in the New Year in San Diego, California.

Brettschneider also created a 13,000-mile route that takes you into Alaska and Canada during the hot summer months to escape the heat.

Brettschneider first created a 70-degree weather road trip map in 2015 and said he never expected it to resonate with people as much as it has.

This 2023 version has shifted slightly due to climate change, but not as much as you'd expect, he wrote.

"It's just too short of a time period to capture the distance change," Brettschneider said.

He told NPR that he hasn't heard of anyone actually going on the road trip yet, but said he might be up for it someday.

"It's a road trip that is best suited to someone who is retired, and I'm still quite a ways away from retirement," he said. "So who knows? Maybe, when I retire, things will have warmed to the point where maybe there's not a 70-degree route anymore."

This Meteorologist Created the Perfect Road Trip

Your cross-country road trip just got upgraded.

It's the height of August heat in the Northern Hemisphere, when a lot of people start to think about a summer getaway to somewhere with brisk breezes and cool nights—the mountains, maybe, or the ocean. But lots of us get the same itch in winter: the need to get a sunny, tropical break from the snow and the gloom. A lot of travel, it turns out, is just climate control. If you like sunny, pleasant weather year-round—boy, do I have the itinerary for you.

Travel with all the comforts of your home thermostat.

In 2015, an Anchorage-based meteorologist named Brian Brettschneider decided that 70ºF was his ideal temperature, and wondered if it was geographically possible to enjoy that pleasant weather all the time. Using weather data from the National Center for Environmental Information, he plotted a 13,235-mile, yearlong road trip through North America, specifically designed to keep travelers at a balmy 70ºF from January to December.

You'll spend more time in Texas than in any other state.

Brettschneider's route begins at the southern tip of Texas on January 1, and winds slowly northward. You won't enter Oklahoma until early April, and will spend that month on a leisurely drive east toward Washington, D.C. In May, you head back west, through Chicago and into Wisconsin, and your summer will be spent on a giant loop through Canada and Alaska . Your northernmost point, Fairbanks, Alaska, will be reached in early July.

Chase the sun back south to L.A.

As temperatures cool, you head south again, spending August on the Oregon coast and heading back east in September all the way to Nebraska. The autumn is a wide swing west, from Missouri through Oklahoma and the Southwest all the way to Las Vegas and then Los Angeles . During December you only need to cover 120 miles, gradually inching south to reach San Diego by New Year's Eve.

You could be the first pioneer of the Temperate Trail.

Brettschneider also whipped up a shorter itinerary that sticks to the lower 48, and an 80 ºF trip for hotter-blooded travelers. But it's the original map that has gone viral on the Internet, shared over half a million times. "The 70ºF road trip map will probably be on my tombstone after I'm dead and buried," Brettschneider told me. Has anyone ever actually spent a year driving it? Brettschneider says that some bike and motorcycle enthusiasts have told him they're going to try his route, but he's "not sure if anyone has actually gone through with it." Reader, do you have a delicate, flower-like constitution for weather and a year to spare? You could be the first!

This Road Trip Puts You in Blissful 70°F Weather for a Full Year

By jen pinkowski | dec 25, 2017.

Brian Brettschneider

Humans love it when the temperature hovers around 70℉. We’re more productive at work, babies sleep better at night, and tourists worldwide think [ PDF ] it’s the ideal temperature for a visit (except for beach vacations). When the mercury rises above 70℉, our unhappiness shoots up too.

But you don’t have to stay in the climate-controlled indoors to maintain this optimum temperature. Climatologist Brian Brettschneider created a 13,235-mile road trip through North America that keeps you in 70℉ weather every day for a full year.

Using weather data from the National Center for Environmental Information and Environment Canada , Brettschneider plotted a route through places that have a daily high average of 70℉. (It will likely get cooler at night.)

The trip begins on January 1 in southernmost Texas. Get comfortable, because you’ll be in the Lone Star State for three months. On April 1, head east, arriving in Washington D.C. a month later. Now head northwest through Chicago, Wisconsin, and much of Canada; you’ll log a whopping 3873 miles in June on your way to Alaska. Return south as far as Portland, Oregon, then head back east through the Plains as far as Missouri. You’ll be there in late October. Spend the fall crossing west again. Celebrate New Year’s Eve in San Diego.

In all, you’ll pass through 31 states and three Canadian provinces.

If you want a shorter trip, Brettschneider also created a 9125-mile route that still begins in Texas and ends in California but omits Canada and Alaska.

9949-mile road trip map through 70-degree weather

And for those of you who like it hotter, he also plotted a 9949-mile trip that follows average daily high temperatures of 80℉. That map includes the 70℉ route in case you want to cool down.

9125-mile road trip map through 80-degree weather

It’s unlikely that you’ll see Brettschneider, who lives in Anchorage, Alaska, along the route—at least anywhere in the Lower 48. "I love the snow," he told CityLab .

Everybody has their own version of a perfect weather day (mine is 72ºF and sunny, by the way), but professional climatologist Brian Brettschneider says 70ºF can sure make a lot of people happy; so happy, in fact, one may be inclined to drive across the country in pursuit of perpetual balmy temps. At least, that’s what Brettschneider had in mind when he created a 30-state, 9,125 mile road trip with an almanac as his guide. From Texas and Colorado to the Great Lakes and our nation’s capital, I must say this 12-month trek looks pretty darn nice. But don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself:

This route is not the only possible way to maintain 70 degree weather but I would recommend taking a year and exploring it, there is no shortage of scenery and it will leave you with broadened horizons and an expanded knowledge of the amount of ground that is possible to cover in a year’s time!

The temperature changes leave you enough time to explore your location and slowly make your way to the next marker, you won’t feel rushed or winded from your journey and I am sure you will find your way to some unexpected places and hidden gems in each location.

It is possible to experience seasons without a drastic fluctuation in temperature! There will still be snow, color changes, oceans and rain along the way. As a full time RVer I know this is more than appealing to many of us travelers. Hit the road and live your dreams of experiencing consistently perfect weather!

About Porter Robinson:

At age 18, the North Carolina-based producer and songwriter burst onto the scene with a complex, bombastic brand of electro-house. Following the major success of his 2014 debut album Worlds , Porter released the RIAA Gold single “Shelter” with Madeon in 2016, followed by a Shelter Live Tour spanning 43 dates and four continents. The following year, Porter began releasing music under a new alias, Virtual Self, which led to his first Grammy nomination for the BBC Radio 1 hit single “Ghost Voices.” In 2019, Porter put on the first Second Sky Festival, which sold out all 30,000 tickets for the two-day festival in a single day. In both 2020 and 2021, Porter Robinson hosted editions of his virtual festival Secret Sky, amassing over 6 million viewers combined, and which came to be regarded as the most sophisticated virtual festivals of its time. Later in 2021, following the release of sophomore album Nurture, Second Sky Festival made its return to the Bay Area, selling out 40,000 tickets in a single day. Immediately following, the Nurture Live North American Tour sold over 150,000 concert tickets and was the highest grossing electronic tour of 2021. In 2022, in partnership with Riot Games, Robinson released “Everything Goes On” surpassing 100 million global streams . Later that year was his debut of one of two exclusive full live band performances, first at Second Sky 2022 and again in 2023 at the Coachella Main Stage.

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Jon Bon Jovi at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., in 2013.

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Refusing to be Fat Elvis

Jon Bon Jovi was interviewed for Thank You, Goodnight .

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

70 degree tour

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Alec John Such, a founding member of Bon Jovi, dies at 70

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

70 degree tour

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

Anne Hathaway Goes from Embracing Leather in 80-Degree Weather to Baring Her Abs on N.Y.C. Press Tour

The actress, with the help of her stylist Erin Walsh, is pulling out all the style stops while promoting 'The Idea of You'

Jamie McCarthy/Getty; Raymond Hall/GC Images; Gotham/GC Images

Anne Hathaway is up for a challenge, especially when it comes to fashion.

The actress, 41, has gone from Princess of Genovia to queen of high-fashion in her style renaissance (or shall we say, re- anne -ssance). And in recent years, she's pulled off many glamorous looks, now including the ones she most recently wore on the Idea of You press tour in New York City.

On April 28, the actress, who also produced the film, stepped out for a screening and panel event rocking leather from top to bottom, styled by Erin Walsh.

There were lots of layers to this edgy Ralph Lauren look, which featured a vest, blazer and trousers (all made of leather) that Walsh teamed with a black tie and white collared shirt. She also wore Jimmy Choo stilettos, plus sunglasses and jewelry by Bulgari.

Adela Loconte/Shutterstock

The masculine-meets-feminine ensemble was reminiscent of Julie Andrews’ 1982 Victor/Victoria suit , which Hathaway also channeled on her cover of V Magazine .

What was also super impressive about Hathaway's commitment to leather, was that on the day she wore it, it was nearly 80 degrees in the Big Apple. How she could pull off one of the heaviest fabrics is unbeknownst to us, but she slayed nonetheless.

Raymond Hall/GC Images

On April 29, the Oscar winner continued her style streak in two monochromatic outfits. First up, she served modern-day Victorian elegance in a Patou white minidress and cropped jacket (both adorned with gold buttons). She accessorized with Calzedonia white tights (a super trendy accessory right now) and a white Le Patou crescent bag also by Patou.

Hathaway then changed into a sheer aquamarine tank top by Simkhai that showed a hint of skin with the design’s abs-baring panel. The dress had an oceanic vibe to it as well, thanks to the flouncy curved hem on the skirt. Teal stilettos rounded out the look.

As with her style, Hathaway loves to push the envelope in the roles she plays, which is exactly what she did with The Idea of You (officially out on Prime Video on May 2).

“In the beginning of the film, the character...she's really scared of going on that adventure because she's had such a rough experience with her ex-husband,” she told PEOPLE of playing Soléne at the SXSW premiere in March. “And so to me, I was incredibly moved by the opportunity to tell the story of a woman blooming.”

Soléne finds love in Hayes ( Nicholas Galitzine ), a boy band member nearly two decades her junior, and Hathaway told PEOPLE it was “a real thrill to be a part of the team bringing this to life.”

“I don't know why we don't have more stories about human beings blooming at any age. We're always coming of age, all the time.”

Miles Russell shoots 70, misses cut at Veritex Bank Championship

Change Text Size

Miles Russell extended his streak of rounds under par to six on Friday, but it wasn’t enough to make his second consecutive cut on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Russell, 15, shot 1-under 70 in the second round to finish 4-under through two days at the Veritex Bank Championship. He was tied for 77th when he finished play, ultimately finishing T111 when the second round concluded on Saturday. Russell missed the cut by three strokes. The 36-hole cut was made at 7-under 135, tying the Korn Ferry Tour record for lowest 36-hole cut score and lowest 36-hole cut score relative to par, as 83 players advanced to the weekend.

It’s a remarkable achievement for the teenager, nonetheless. Russell, the reigning AJGA Boys Junior Player of the Year, earned his spot at the Veritex Bank Championship with a T20 at last week’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, into which the left-handed Floridian received a sponsor exemption. He validated that spot and then some with four rounds under par – 66, 68, 70, 66 – to become the youngest player to record a top-25 finish on the PGA TOUR or Korn Ferry Tour, on record (since 1983).

Miles Russell, 15, becomes youngest to make cut on Korn Ferry Tour

Russell shot an opening-round 68 on Thursday that would have been even lower if not for a closing bogey on the par-5 18th. It was the last hole of Friday’s round that tripped Russell, too. Russell put his approach shot in the water on the par-5 ninth hole, his 18th of the day. With a birdie, Russell could have made the weekend. Instead, Russell made a bogey to fall outside the projected cutline.

Last year, Russell became the youngest AJGA Boys Junior Player of the Year, surpassing Tiger Woods’ long-standing record. Russell’s 2023 season included back-to-back victories at TaylorMade TP5 Junior All-Star and Moon Golf Junior All-Star, in addition to a seven-shot win at the Junior PGA Championship and a three-shot win at the Junior PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The native of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, is currently a high school freshman, attending online school. He joined 2009 AJGA Player of the Year Jordan Spieth and 2013 AJGA Player of the Year Scottie Scheffler in finishing in the top 25 in their TOUR-sanctioned debut; Spieth finished T16 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in 2010, while Scheffler finished T22 at the same event in 2014.

Scottie Scheffler walk-and-talk with 2023 Junior PLAYERS Champion

It’s lofty company for anybody to keep, but Russell’s play has validated it over the last two weeks. November in Bermuda can’t come soon enough.
