The 5 Closest Beaches to the Nassau Cruise Port (Free to Visit)

Picture a cruise to The Bahamas and one of the first images that will come to mind is a white sand beach with electric blue water. But if you’re visiting Nassau , which is one of the most visited cruise ports in the world, you might be surprised that you don’t see any beaches at all from the pier.

That’s because cruise ships dock in a spot that’s heavily developed with a waterfront that’s been built for commerce instead of a beach day.

Nevertheless, Nassau does sit on an island, and if you’re visiting on a cruise, then there are some beaches relatively close by. Just know that they can involve walking, a taxi ride, or a ferry to access. Still, if you want to visit a beach, these are your closest options…

Junkanoo Beach (0.6 Miles)

About two-thirds of a mile from the cruise ship (roughly a 15-minute walk) sits the closest beach to the cruise ports — Junkanoo. All you have to do to get there is hang a right outside of the port area and follow Bay Street until you pass the Margaritaville Report.

We consider Junkanoo Beach to be two parts . The first part you reach will be much more crowded with restaurants, bars, loungers, and chairs that you can rent. If you want to have some beers and have a good time, this is the spot for you.

Walk farther down the beach and you’ll notice that all that goes away and it’s largely an empty beach (except for other cruise passengers), some shady trees and a much calmer vibe.

One cool feature is that from here you can look back and see the cruise ships, and they make a great backdrop for a photo.

Esplanade Beach (1 Miles)

Walk about five more minutes down the path from Junkanoo and you’re at Esplanade Beach. This stretch of sand curves around, almost facing directly back at the cruise ships. During our visits here we’ve noticed it to be quieter, larger, and with hardly many people at all.

Note that there aren’t public facilities here like restrooms. There are some spots to eat and grab a drink, but they are far fewer than what’s found at nearby Junkanoo Beach.

As well, there are some spots with loungers and/or umbrellas that are available to rent. So if you’re wanting a beach that has some simple offerings but far fewer people… all while being within a healthy walk of the cruise ship, this may be ideal.

We will say that this beach is right near the Nassau Container Port, which means it doesn’t have the most beautiful view, although you can see the cruise ships in the distance.

Cabbage Beach (1.5 Miles)

If you want the most popular beach (when it comes to the amount of cruise passengers who visit), then head to Cabbage Beach. The beach is golden sand with gorgeous blue water, and lots of activity with everything from tourists to vendors.

You’ll find Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island. This is perhaps better known as the island where the bustling Atlantis Resort sits. To get there you can either grab a taxi at the stand in the cruise port area (the easy way) or take a $7 ferry across the channel and then walk over to the beach (the more fun way, though not the easiest).

Once you arrive you’ll find a busy beach that stretches for seemingly forever. Anything you could want to rent is available here as well. Want smaller crowds? Walk down the beach and you’ll find a spot that’s all your own.

Saunders Beach (2.5 Miles)

If you want a local’s beach that’s likely to have only a few visitors to relax and spend the day, Saunders Beach will fit the bill.

At about two miles from the cruise port, we think this would be too far of a distance to walk for most people. Instead, you’ll want to catch a cab at the cruise port for a quick ride over to the spot.

Saunders Beach features a number of coves stretching over a half-mile distance so there will always be plenty of space. There aren’t a lot of bars/restaurants here but there is a kid’s playground, public restrooms at the west end of the beach, and a convenience store across the road where you can grab something to drink or a snack.

Goodman’s Bay (3.5 Miles)

Ok, if you’re thinking of a classic Bahamian beach, this might be what you have in mind. It’s a sweeping and wide beach that circles the bay for more than a mile. In fact, some of the biggest and nicest hotels on the island (including the massive Baha Mar resort) call this spot home.

In between these hotels is Goodman’s Bay Park, offering easy public access to the beach and the water. And while the beach might get more crowded in front of the resorts, this spot should have relatively fewer people.

Note that unless staying at a resort, there aren’t many facilities for you here for things like chairs or umbrellas. There are some trees at the edge of the beach if you want a little shade. As well, it will take about a 15-minute taxi ride to get here from the cruise port.

Junkanoo Beach

Known as the “Spring Break Beach,” Junkanoo Beach gets a large influx of visitors throughout the year. The beach can be packed during the peak of the season, but it is an excellent choice for a convenient spot for beach fun and good food. 

Junkanoo is lined with beach bars and yummy places to grab a bite to eat. It is also walking distance from the famous Straw Market, where tourists can find a vast array of local art and trinkets to take home as souvenirs. The beach also features convenient public restrooms and little vendors selling snacks. 

You can get to Junkanoo Beach with less than a one-mile walk. The short walk will take you an average of only 15 minutes. Although it is close to the seaport, the party crowd may not be the most suitable for small children. After all, the beach is named after one of the most well-known island festivals that is centered around the life of the party. 

Even though this beach is not great for families, if you are traveling in an adults-only group or with friends, this is a can’t-miss stop.

Cabbage Beach

Although Cabbage Beach in no way resembles the item in the produce aisle, it is known as one of the best beaches in the Bahamas. The beautiful white and fluffy shoreline is perfect for quiet relaxation under a beach umbrella. 

Cabbage Beach has calm waters, perfect for lounging on floats. Those who want a little more thrill can rent jet skis or parasails. Some of the best resorts in the Bahamas, such as Atlantis , The Four Seasons, and The Ocean Club, are near this beach. 

You will find Cabbage Beach a little over 2.5 miles from the cruise port, making it a little too far to walk. However, it is only a short 15-minute drive if you can flag down a cab. If you are looking for a bit of exercise, you can take the walk all the way there for a more direct route. Also, you can find several tour options that will combine a visit to this beach with other fun activities .

The quiet and relaxing atmosphere offers an excellent location for families looking to soak up the sun or participate in fun water activities. Given its proximity to the cruise port, this is an ideal spot for those who are time conscious but still want to enjoy their island time.

Saunders Beach

This quiet beach is devoid of large resorts and thrill-seeking jet skiers, making it perfect for those looking for quiet relaxation. Saunders Beach is a great family-friendly atmosphere, making the short 11-minute drive worth it for families with small children. 

Saunders Beach features artificial swimming coves, so younger kids do not have to fight strong waves or currents. Playgrounds give young kids something fun to do while parents get to enjoy the beautiful island scenery. The beach does have public restrooms and showers, so beachgoers can get cleaned up before returning to the Nassau Cruise Port. 

The minor downside to this beach is the lack of food vendors and loungers. Make sure to pack for this spot accordingly. Regardless, the trip won’t be a disappointment, and the kids are sure to have a blast. 

Goodman’s Bay

Goodman’s Bay is only 4 miles from the Nassau Cruise Port, making for a short 11-minute car ride. Tourists frequent the beautiful beaches. 

A good thing to note about Goodman’s Bay is that it is home to the island’s US Embassy . If you find that you have misplaced your passport or have some other problem, you will need to know where to find some assistance. Beaches in Nassau Near Cruise Port: Less Than 30 Minutes

Cable beach.

As one of the Bahamas’ most famous beaches, these flawless sandy shores of Cable Beach attract a lot of visitors . Don’t worry, there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy some relaxation. Cruisers can find this beach about 6 miles west of the cruiser port, much too far to walk. However, it is less than a 20-minute drive. 

Cable Beach features some of the most well-known all-inclusive resorts in the Bahamas. The beach offers numerous water sports activities to keep the kids busy while mom and dad relax on the warm white sands. 

If you want to get your vacation poker on, Cable Beach is only a short distance from Baha Mar Resort, the home of the Bahamas’ largest casino. While not the quietest beach, it is an excellent option for families and kids of all ages- especially if you want to get away from the main ports for a while.

Caves Beach

This beach is named after the unique cave system that once provided refuge for natives of the Bahamas. Located due west of Cable Beach, it will take about a 20-minute car ride to reach Caves Beach . 

Caves Beach does not get much foot traffic, making it a quiet getaway. The caves that once sheltered Indians now offer beachgoers comfortable shade from the hot sun, not to mention some pretty unique exploring opportunities. 

The relaxing shoreline is a short walk across the street to various food and drink restaurants. The slightly longer journey is often best to get away from the crowd at the cruise port. The further away you get, the more quiet and relaxing the beaches get. In addition to the seclusion, you often get more exposure to the local vibes. 

Beaches in Nassau Near Cruise Port: 30 Minutes or More

Coral Harbor Beach boasts some of the most breath-taking blue waters that the Bahamas has to offer. The soft white sands are peppered with tower palm and Australian pine trees that cast shade on hot beachgoers. 

This beach offers many fun activities for the whole family, including horseback adventures through beach trails to make the most of the gorgeous island views. 

Located on the island’s south end, you will most certainly have to take a 30-minute car ride to reach this beach. Although, it is well worth the trip for families looking for unique fun. 

Jaws Beach , managed by the Clifton Heritage Authority, is located on the island’s far west side. It will take about 35 minutes by car to reach the beach. However, the distance from the cruise port makes it a perfect escape from the crowded tourist centers. 

The shoreline features both rocky and sandy landscapes. The Clifton Heritage Authority rents out snorkeling gear for those wishing to discover unique ocean life. Please look into the regulations regarding snorkeling before you schedule a time to go, as you may have to complete prerequisite courses before gearing up to snorkel. 

The quiet and crowd-free beach is a perfect spot for families of all ages. 

The name fits the spot to a “t” as the Bahamas’ only nude beach. Obviously, Love Beach is not a spot for kids. However, this crowd-free beach could be a good option for vacationing couples who are looking for a secluded and quiet place to relax and enjoy a beautiful beach. 

The shallow, warm waters are great for snorkeling and lounging. A 40-acre coral reef makes seeing unique ocean life a guarantee. The beach does have some great fresh food close by for when you snorkel up an appetite. If you find yourself at Love Beach, drop by one of its well-known restaurants, Nirvana.

You will find this beach about half an hour of drive time west of the downtown area and cruise port. While not the most conveniently located in comparison to Junkanoo Beach, it is a great option for those looking for this type of secluded and romantic experience. 

Adelaide Beach

If you are trying to make a quick trip during shore time, this may not be the place for your family. Located on the southwestern side of the island, you will take a 40-minute cab ride to reach this beach.

Adelaide Beach is more quiet and more secluded than most other Nassau beaches. And, it has a distinctive history in that it was settled by a group of 157  slaves freed from an illegal slave ship.

You won’t find many tourists or locals roaming the sandy shores. This makes for a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown and the cruise port. The lack of foot traffic helps ensure a safe and accessible place to keep an eye on small kids. 

There are no public restrooms, showers, or food vendors, so make sure you pack accordingly with adequate food and drink to withstand your stay. Adelaide Beach is a must-go for families of all ages if you have the time.

Nassau is the largest city and the capital of the Bahamas. In fact, Nassau is one of the most popular cruise ports, attracting over 3.7 million cruise passengers annually.

Nassau, Bahamas, is home to beautiful beaches, rich historical sites, and, of course, the Atlantis resort.

Cruise ships dock in Prince George Wharf, which is conveniently located near the downtown district and Bay Street. Cruisers can do a lot of sightseeing by foot, which is why Nassau is such a popular destination.

There are so many great things to do when you are visiting Nassau, from beautiful beaches near the cruise port to island tours and all-inclusive resorts. Recently we visited Nassau by cruise and had an amazing day!

Nassau Cruise Port

Cruise ships arriving in Nassau, Bahamas, will dock at the Prince George Wharf. The cruise port is conveniently close to Bay Street and the downtown district. There are many shops, restaurants, and activities within walking distance of the cruise port.

Passengers who have booked shore excursions through the cruise line will find their tour operators stationed near the dock. Those who have booked their shore excursions privately must meet their guides further down the dock.

The Nassau cruise port can feel quite hectic, as up to 6 cruise ships can dock at a time. It is a good idea to plan something to do in advance, as it will be jam-packed when you leave the cruise port.

To be safe, cruise travelers are best off staying within the busier tourist areas or taking a reputable tour.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Nassau Cruise Port

The official currency for the Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar. However, the Bahamian dollar is equivalent to the U.S. dollar, and both are widely accepted.

In Nassau, most businesses and restaurants accept U.S. cash or credit cards. You can also use US money when shopping for souvenirs or with local vendors.

If you want to exchange money, you can onboard your cruise ship. However, the exchange rate from a local bank or ATM will be better.

There are several banks and ATMs located near the cruise port on Parliament Street or in the downtown area.

In the Bahamas, the official language is English. However, some locals may speak Creole or Bahamianese. Overall, nearly everyone speaks and understands English in Nassau.

In the Bahamas, they operate on Eastern Standard Time. Furthermore, the cruise ship time will typically be the same as the time on land.

If you like to explore cruise ports by foot, then you will enjoy visiting Nassau.

Taxi operators are located around the Prince George Wharf area. In Nassau, the taxis are not metered, so it’s a good idea to negotiate the ride fare before entering the car.

Nassau’s public buses, also known as jitneys, are an economical and convenient alternative to taxis and car rentals. The bus runs from 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM, costing $1.50 per person for a one-way ride.

There is a bus stop conveniently located near the cruise port, and it stops at popular locations like downtown Nassau and Cable Beach.

Car and Scooter Rental:

For those interested in exploring Nassau on their own, you can do so by renting a car or scooter. There are car and scooter rentals available through Trip Advisor.

However, this is a potential cruise port mistake . If you’ve never driven in the Bahamas, be aware that the rules of the road can differ from the United States.

Nassau offers a variety of exciting attractions, activities, and historical sites for visitors. Here are the best things to do while you’re in Nassau:

Best Public Beaches in Nassau

There are some free public beaches in Nassau. If you’re trying to save money on excursions during your cruise , these free beaches are the most popular and recommended.

1. Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Beach is the closest public beach to the cruise ship port. This free Nassau beach is a good option for cruisers who want to stay within walking distance of the cruise ship.

The local beach is a about a 15-20 minute walk from the cruise port, or you can take a taxi.

At Junkanoo Beach, you can access restrooms, showers, and changing facilities. There are also local vendors who offer chair rentals.

If you get hungry or thirsty, there are various restaurants and bars nearby.

2. Cable Beach

Cable Beach is often called “Nassau’s best beach”, as it is 2.5 miles long and has white sand and crystal clear waters. This beach is lined with famous resorts, including Baha Mar and Sandals Royal Bahamian.

It can take 25-30 minutes to get to Cable Beach by taxi. A cheaper alternative is taking the No. 10 bus, which costs $1.50 per person.

At Cable Beach, you can do watersports, snorkel, and relax under the sun!

3. Cabbage Beach

Cabbage Beach is a public beach which is located on the north side of Paradise Island. You can get to Cabbage Beach by taking a short water taxi ride to Paradise Island ($10 round-trip) or walking for around 20 minutes.

At Cabbage Beach, you will find crystal-clear water and soft sand. Local vendors offer on-site chair and umbrella rentals.

At times, the water can get quite rough at Cabbage Beach. However, you will be right next to Atlantis, which makes for some amazing photos!

4. Saunders Beach

Saunder Beach is a 10-15 minute taxi ride from the cruise part. It is known to be one of the quieter beaches in Nassau, making it the ideal choice for families. At Saunders Beach, you can access restroom facilities and a playground.

Be sure to bring towels, as there are no vendors at Saunders Beach.

5. Love Beach

If you’re looking for a free beach with stunning water, check out Love Beach. Love Beach is located a bit further than Cable Beach, and many people say it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas.

At Love Beach, there will be chair rentals and the Nirvana Beach Bar, a fan favorite among cruisers!

6. Jaws Beach

Jaws Beach is the furthest beach from the cruise port. However, it was the filming location for the movie Jaws III!

Whether you’re a movie fan or you enjoy snorkeling, this beach is definitely worth checking out. There are Hollywood memorabilia and sculptures located underwater, which is super fun.

If you get tired of the beach, you can walk to Clifton Heritage Park and enjoy a picnic lunch there.

Best Island Beach Escapes in Nassau

These island beach escapes are excursions that can typically be purchased through the cruise line. This makes for a hassle-free experience as you won’t have to worry about transportation and planning.

In most cases, you will meet your shore excursion guide at a designated sport before being guided to a bus or boat. From there, you can enjoy your day before returning to the cruise port.

7. Pearl Island

Pearl Island allows guests to relax on the beach, explore the island’s walking trails, explore a lighthouse, and enjoy a traditional Bahamian lunch. Pearl Island is on the pricey side. However, there is a lot included in the price.

Through Carnival Cruise Line, Pearl Island costs $95 for adults and $75 for children. This includes transportation, a lounge chair, a signature cocktail, lunch, and watersports like kayaks, paddleboards, water trampolines, and water mats.

The boat ride to Pearl Island takes roughly 30 minutes, and the excursion lasts approximately 5 hours. At Pearl Island, you will have access to bathroom facilities, changing rooms, and showers.

If you’re interested, VIP cabanas are available at an additional cost.

8. Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is a small island located off the coast of Nassau. Typically, a Blue Lagoon island excursion combines the beach with other activities like sea lion encounters, dolphin encounters, or segway tours. If you want to spend the day at the beach, you can also do that.

Depending on the shore excursion and what cruise line you are sailing with, day passes range from $90 to $200 per adult.

9. Balmoral Island

If you’re looking for a great way to spend your day in Nassau, check out Balmoral Island. Unlike the other islands, Balmoral Island has two freshwater pools available to guests who want a break from the ocean.

The downside to going to Balmoral Island is that your food, drinks, and water sports are not included. If you enjoy doing water sports, it may be a better value for you to try one of the other excursions!

10. Royal Beach Club

Royal Caribbean cruise line is opening the Royal Beach Club in 2025. This beach club be available exclusively to guests onboard Royal Caribbean cruises.

This 17-acre resort is located on Paradise Island, a short water taxi away from the cruise port. At the Royal Beach Club, there will be four pristine beaches for guests to enjoy (Tranquility Beach, Sapphire Beach, Hideaway Beach, and Harbor Beach).

There will also be various restaurants, bars, and pools at the Royal Beach Club. Once the beach is open, it will be the ultimate beach escape for families.

Best Resorts in Nassau (Day Passes)

Resort day passes give cruise ship passengers access to hotel and resort amenities. Depending on the resort, you may find all-inclusive passes.

The resorts typically feature access to the beach, private pools, restaurants, and bars. These day passes can be purchased individually through the hotel or resort.

11. Atlantis Paradise Island

Nassau is one of the main attractions in Nassau, Bahamas, but it is undoubtedly a pricey way to spend your day. A day pass to the Atlantis Aqua Adventure Water Park starts at $210 for adults and $150 for children if you purchase it through the Carnival Cruise Line.

A pass to Atlantis Adventure Water Park includes access to 141 acres of pools, water rides, Atlantis beaches, The Dig, Marina Village, and casino. Food and drinks may or may not be included depending on the conditions of your ticket.

Another option is to purchase the day pass directly through the Atlantis website. The admission price varies on what day you are going, and there is a good chance that you won’t save any money this way. Furthermore, you will be responsible for your transportation.

Atlantis offers additional activities that cruise passengers can do. However, they do cost extra.

Atlantis offers various dolphin experiences, sea lion experiences, stingray experiences, and more. These experiences range in price, but they generally cost $335 for adults and $285 for kids.

You can access certain areas of the Atlantis resort without paying any admission fee. The casino, indoor retail, specific dining venues, and Marina Village are available to the public.

Remember, if you are going to Atlantis without the cruise line, you are responsible for returning to the cruise ship on time. Keep an eye on your watch so you don’t get left behind in Nassau!

12. Margaritaville Resort & Waterpark

Margaritaville Resort & Water Park is a new resort that opened in 2021. This resort features two private beaches, two swimming pools, a lazy river, water slides, and a poolside bar.

The great thing about the Margaritaville Resort is that it’s only a 15-minute walk from the cruise port. Since Margaritaville is a short walk from the cruise port, you can spend the whole day there, and you won’t have to worry about finding a taxi back.

It costs $110 for adults and 55 for children to enter the Margaritaville Resort. This will give you access to all onsite activities, amenities, and Wi-Fi. At Margaritaville, you must pay for the food and beverages.

When we were in Nassau, we spent the day at Margaritaville, and it was awesome! The resort is clean, modern, and the staff is very friendly.

Whether you’re traveling as a family, as a couple, or with friends, you will have a good time at the Margaritaville resort.

13. Baha Mar

Baha Mar is a luxury resort that offers a limited number of day passes. When you visit Baha Mar, you will have access to a 15-acre water park, 24 water slides, a lazy river, an infinity pool, a wave pool, a kids pool, a FlowRide surf simulator, an outdoor casino, and the beach.

Right now, a day pass costs $160 for adults, $65 for guests under 48-inches, and free for guests under two.

14. Warwick Paradise Island

Warwick Paradise Island Bahamas is a resort for guests 16 and up. At Warwick, you will find a small beach and a massive pool with lounge chairs.

A day pass to Warwick Paradise Island costs $130 to $160, depending on if you want the standard or deluxe day package. When you’re a Warwick, your food and drinks are included, which is a huge bonus!

15. Riu Palace

RIU Palace is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort located on Paradise Island near Atlantis. When you’re at Riu Palace, you will have access to a swim-up bar, two swimming pools, and a dedicated beach area on Cabbage Beach.

A day pass for RIU Palace starts at $129 per person. This includes premium cocktails and a poolside “jerk” barbeque station.

When you spend the day at Riu Palace, you must pay for transportation from the cruise ship pier. You will also have to pay $10 for Wi-Fi if you want to stay connected, and there is an additional charge for spa treatments.

16. Breezes Resort & Spa

Breezes Resort & Spa is an all-inclusive that costs $125 for the day. This includes access to the beach, pools, swim-up bar, jacuzzi, land activities, water sports, and your meals and alcoholic beverages.

The resort is located on cable, which is a 15-20 minute drive from the cruise terminal.

Exploring Nassau Bahamas

17. the straw market.

The Straw Market is a large market with handmade Bahamian straw products like purses, bags, and hats. You can also find factory-made souvenirs like shirts, bracelets, and magnets. Before you make any purchases, be sure to negotiate on the price!

The good thing about the straw market is that it’s extremely close to the Prince George Wharf cruise port. If you want to get off the ship and shop for souvenirs, the Straw Market is only a 6-minute walk from the port.

18. The Queen’s Staircase

The Queens Staircase is named after the late Queen Victoria. This historic attraction is a 66-step staircase that was carved out of limestone in 1793.

This staircase provides a direct route from downtown Nassau to For Fincastle. Furthermore, there is no charge to go up the historic staircase.

19. Fort Fincastle

Fort Fincastle is a historic fort that was built back in 1793 to protect Nassau from pirates. At Fort Fincastle, you will gain access to some incredible views of the cruise port.

When you visit Fort Fincastle, you will be near the Queen’s Staircase and the Pirates of Nassau Museum. If you’re exploring Nassau on foot, checking out these three attractions is a great idea!

If you want to enter For Fincastle, the cost of admission is $1 for adults and free for kids under 12.

20. Parliament Square

Parliament Square houses the Bahamas House of Assembly, Supreme Court, and Senate Building. This is a great spot for pictures as the colonial buildings are in a pink pastel color, and they look very tropical.

You will also see a statue of Queen Victoria that was built in the early 1900s.

If you’re looking to spend your afternoon in Downtown Nassau, and you want to visit museums then you’re in luck. Nassau has several museums that are within walking distance from the cruise port.

21. Pirates of Nassau Museum

If you’re traveling with kids, check out the Pirates of Nassau Museum. This is an interesting museum to learn about the history of Nassau and piracy between 1690 to 1720.

One of the cool features of the Pirates of Nassau Museum is that they have a replica pirate ship. This is a major hit among kids as they can walk on it.

Admission to the Pirates of Nassau Museum is $14 for adults and $7 for kids under 17.

22. Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation

The Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation is smaller. Here, you will learn about Pompey, a slave who led a rebellion in 1830 on the island of Exuma.

The museum is located at the Historic Vendue House. This building was built around 1769 and functioned as a marketplace until the late 1800’s. In 1992, it became a museum that was open to the public.

If you want to visit this museum, it is only a 7-minute walk from the cruise port. It’s also located right next to the Straw Market.

23. National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas is the perfect museum for art enthusiasts. This museum features art from the locals and highlights Bahamian history and culture.

It costs $10 for adults, and it is free for children to visit the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. Furthermore, the art gallery is a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, and it is nearby several other attractions.

24. Heritage Museum of the Bahamas

The Heritage Museum of the Bahamas is a smaller museum with relics dating back to prehistoric times. At this museum, you will see tools used during slavery, items from a Bahamian grocery store in 1900, and a meteorite slice.

When you visit the Heritage Museum of the Bahamas, you will have the choice of doing a self-guided tour or purchasing an audio guide for around $20. The Heritage Museum is a 12-minute walk from the cruise port, and it is near the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas.

Junkanoo is a street festival in the Bahamas that happens on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day every year. This cultural celebration includes dancing, spirituality, and listening to music.

Nassau Bahamas Beaches Near the Cruise Port

The best beaches near the Nassau Bahamas cruise port require a taxi, rental car or excursion bus to reach them.

The best beaches for hotel visitors are Cable Beach, the most popular and well-known beach on the island, and the nearby Paradise Island. Both are popular with cruise visitors as well.

Cruise visitors, who dock on the northern coast of New Providence Island at downtown Nassau, have one small but decent beach within walking distance of the cruise terminal.

Junkanoo Beach, also known as the Western Esplanade, is a half mile west of the cruise docks or about a 10 minute walk. Walkers can get there by going right onto East Bay Street as they walk out of the cruise terminal. It’s an easy walk in a nearly straight line along East Bay. East Bay is the main tourist district. It has the Nassau Straw Market along with plenty of shopping and dining.

Before going, look around the cruise port to see how many cruise ships are docking there. If it’s busy, the odds are good that Junkanoo will have quite a crowd. In that case, look for other beaches that will require transportation.

One of the most popular is Cable Beach, which is six miles or 15 minutes west of the cruise port. It is more than two miles long and has a cluster of hotels, resorts and restaurants. It also has a golf course, nightlife and the largest casino in the Bahamas.

The least expensive way for cruise port visitors to reach Cable Beach is the public bus system, which travels along East Bay and then West Bay. Bus users won’t get lost or confused about their location. Expect to pay about $1.25 per person.

Otherwise, taxis are the next option. The island has zoned rates. Expect to pay $12 one way for two people with $3 apiece for each additional person.

Paradise Island Beaches

Paradise Island is a small island right next to New Providence Island. It is home to the massive Atlantis resort complex.

It also offers good beaches near the Nassau cruise port . Cruise visitors can see the island and Atlantis from the terminal.

It is a good option for anyone who wants to explore Atlantis and also spend time on a decent beach.

Besides the resorts and water park, Paradise Island has about a half dozen beaches. Cabbage Beach is the best known.

Visitors can get there by taxi or a 15-minute ferry ride. The ferry docks are outside the terminal on the right by the Straw Market. Round trip tickets are $8. A taxi ride will cost about $4.

Cabbage Beach is about a mile from the Paradise Island Ferry Terminal. Budget-minded visitors can walk there from the cruise terminal over the Paradise Island bridge, but it is not advisable.

For quieter beaches on Paradise Island, consider taking a taxi to Colonial at the far west end or Arawak or Smugglers at the far east end.

Other Nassau Cruise Beaches

Montagu Beach is worth mentioning for anyone who goes east on East Bay Street. It is a little more than two miles from the cruise terminal.

A small fort called Fort Montagu by the beach makes this one worth considering for anyone with an interest in history. The fort is more photographic than the more popular Fort Fincastle .

One interesting beach excursion involves taking a ferry to Balmoral Island for a half day. The package includes transportation, lunch and beach chair for about $80 per person. Recreational activities include volleyball and swimming pools.

Another option is a ferry to Pearl Island. Some excursion operators were offering a half-day package that includes transportation and lunch.

The Bahamas are known for having some of the world’s best beaches, so visiting one of the best beaches in Nassau is probably at the top of your list when you’re planning a Bahamas cruise.

But with so many choices, how do you know which are the best beaches in Nassau for cruisers? From the closest beach to the cruise port, the best beach in Nassau for snorkeling, to the best Nassau beach for kids, I’ve got you covered with the seven best beaches for all types of cruisers.

Plus, I’ll let you know the best way to get to Nassau’s top beaches from the cruise port. (Hint: it’s not by booking an overpriced coach “tour” that just drops you off at the beach!)

How to get to the best beaches in Nassau from the cruise port

Nassau, Bahamas is located on the 80-square-mile New Providence Island. Between New Providence and Paradise Island (which is accessible by bridge or ferry), there are dozens of beautiful public beaches to choose from for your port day in Nassau. All the beaches on my list are public and completely free to visit.

To get to many of Nassau’s best beaches from the cruise port, you can take advantage of one of Nassau’s best bargains: jitneys !

Jitneys are independently-owned buses that charge just $1.50 each way to any stop along one of several routes. Passengers can hail a passing jitney even if it’s not at a bus stop. Jitneys will come by each bus stop about once every 10-15 minutes until 6 PM.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi from the cruise port to the beaches. Rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft don’t currently operate in the Bahamas.

Now, on to the beaches!

Best Nassau beach to walk to from the cruise port

Junkanoo Beach , also known as Western Esplanade Beach, is just a 15-minute walk from the cruise terminal. Its proximity to the cruise port makes it a super-popular beach for cruisers, so be ready for a crowd!

This busy beach is right downtown, so there are lots of amenities for beachgoers. Junkanoo Beach features public restrooms, changing facilities with lockers, and a lifeguard.

Lounger and umbrella rentals are available, although the prices can vary wildly depending on the day. Non-motorized water gear is also available to rent, including kayaks, snorkel gear, inner tubes, paddleboards, and water trikes.

Local food and drink vendors are located right on the beach. Tiki Bikini Hut , in the middle of Junkanoo Beach, is a full-service bar and grill serving Caribbean specialties, cocktails, and beer. Free Wi-Fi is available for customers.

How to get to Junkanoo Beach from Nassau cruise port

Exiting the cruise terminal, take a right and walk west on Woodes Rodgers Walk toward Charlotte Street. At Señor Frog’s, take a left on Navy Lion Road. Bear right and continue west on Marlborough Street. Turn right onto West Bay Street and the beach will be on your right, across from the Courtyard by Marriott and the Holiday Inn Express. There are signs on the way to the beach to guide you as well.

Best Nassau beach for kids and families

Situated between Junkanoo Beach and Cable Beach on the north shore of New Providence Island, Saunders Beach is a less-crowded and very family-friendly option if you’re cruising with the kids or grandkids.

The water here is usually calm, so even little kids can splash and swim safely. However, be sure to pack water shoes for the entire family because you’ll encounter some hard coral.

There aren’t any water sports rentals on this beach, and there are some roped-off swimming areas in the coves, making it an even safer spot for kids to play in the water.

Saunders Beach is more of a locals’ beach than a tourist beach, so you won’t find lounger or umbrella rentals. If you prefer a spot out of the direct sun, there are trees at the back of the beach that provide some shade.

The beach also features a children’s playground as well as restrooms and changing rooms, and outdoor showers. Bring toilet paper from the ship, as the restrooms aren’t always restocked!

Security guards patrol Saunders Beach, so you won’t be pestered by as many vendors as you are on many of the busier Nassau beaches.

Food options are limited, but there’s a convenience store across the street near the western end of the beach for snacks. A Pizza Hut is located at the eastern end of the beach if you’re looking for a kid-friendly lunch option.

How to get to Saunders Beach from Nassau cruise port

Like many beaches along West Bay Street, Saunders Beach is easily reachable by jitney. A taxi should take a little over ten minutes, so it won’t be too expensive.

Or, you could make the 45-minute walk to the beach, passing through downtown Nassau and continuing past Junkanoo Beach. When you see Ferguson Road on your left, Saunders Beach will be just ahead on the right.

Best beach in Nassau for active adults and teens

Beautiful Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is where the famous Atlantis Bahamas Resort makes its home, but non-guests can also visit the beach for free. The beach is famous for its super-fine white sand and stunning turquoise water.

The currents and waves can be strong, and the water gets deep quickly as you leave the shore, so it’s not the best beach for small kids. However, Cabbage Beach is perfect for active adults and teenagers due to the range of activities available.

Activities available on Cabbage Beach include parasailing , banana boat rides, jetskiing , and snorkeling. There are no lifeguards, but you’ll find some roped-off areas for swimming.

You won’t find the local food vendors right on the sand like many other beaches in the area, but there are tons of restaurants for various tastes and budgets just a short walk away from the sand. However, there are plenty of vendors offering all-you-can-drink alcohol.

There are no public restrooms, so if you’d like to make a full day of it, you might consider purchasing an Atlantis beach day pass that includes a lounger and towels, plus use of Atlantis’ facilities. The pass (only available to cruise passengers and guests at select hotels) also includes access to view the resort’s marine habitats including The Dig , a stunning 11-million gallon aquarium exhibit housing over fifty thousand sea animals.

How to get to Cabbage Beach from Nassau cruise port

As Paradise Island is closed to the jitneys that serve New Providence Island, the fastest way is to take a ten- to fifteen-minute taxi ride from the cruise port to Cabbage Beach.

The scenic route would be to take the small ferry ($4 per person each way) across and walk to the beach. As you exit the cruise terminal, just look for the sign pointing you to the ticket booth.

There are two public access points you could take to reach the sand. One is by taking Casino Drive and entering the beach next to Riu Palace .

A bit east of that entrance, you could take Ocean Drive to reach a set of wooden stairways leading down to the beach from the road.

Best beach for snorkeling in Nassau

Love Beach is one of Nassau’s less-crowded beaches, and it’s a great place to snorkel right from the beach without having to book a snorkeling shore excursion .

Snorkels are available to rent on the beach, but consider bringing your own full-face snorkel set . They’re not expensive, plus they fit better and you’ll have a better field of view than you’d get from a rental mask.

Snorkelers of all abilities will have plenty of opportunity to see gorgeous fish and corals just off the shore.

Lounger and umbrella rentals are also available, and usually at cheaper rates than at the more popular beaches. Float and kayak rentals are also offered.

The onsite Nirvana Beach Bar serves up typical Bahamian beach food, along with beer and cocktails (they only accept cash, but either US or Bahamian dollars are fine). They also offer restrooms, changing rooms, and showers, at no cost to customers.

How to get to Love Beach from Nassau cruise port

Hail a jitney (or take a 30-minute taxi ride) for a scenic drive on West Bay Street to Love Beach, then look for the Nirvana sign on the right on top of a large arched gate. Their property is the primary access point to Love Beach for non-residents.

Best uncrowded beach in Nassau

Caves Beach , on New Providence Island’s north shore, is a narrow sandy stretch just west of Cable Beach and doesn’t get much tourist traffic. It’s a wonderful beach to visit if you just want to escape the crowds!

Caves Beach gets its name from the nearby limestone caverns that once sheltered the Lucayans, the native people that lived in the Bahamas from the 10th century until the arrival of Europeans.

The beach doesn’t offer public restrooms, but there are restaurants close by with facilities for customers. If you’re looking for a cocktail or a bite to eat overlooking the water, head to the far eastern end where you’ll find the Daq Shack and the Island Life Down Home Restaurant.

If you’re the adventurous type, be sure to check out the caves themselves, which are located just across the road. They’re pretty dark and slippery, and full of bats, but interesting to see.

How to get to Caves Beach from Nassau cruise port

Take a jitney to Caves Beach on West Bay Street, a few miles past Cable Beach. A taxi will be quicker (about 25 minutes) but will cost significantly more.

Since there are no hotels directly on the beach, access is much easier. Just walk on to the sand and enjoy!

Best Nassau beach for history buffs

If you’re a history lover but still want to enjoy some beach time during your port day in Nassau, then Montagu Beach is perfect for you!

Located next to Fort Montagu , the oldest military fort remaining on the island of New Providence, pretty Montagu Beach is a little over two miles east of the cruise port.

Although Montagu Beach is close to downtown, it’s in a primarily residential area that hasn’t been overdeveloped. The beach features a fantastic view across Nassau Harbour to the southern shore of Paradise Island.

Public restrooms are available, and there’s also a small kids’ playground located in nearby Montagu Park .

If you visit at lunchtime, you’ll often see food stalls set up by the waterfront serving local seafood and Caribbean specialties . These vendors are popular with the locals, so you won’t be paying tourist prices for your meal!

About Fort Montagu

Fort Montagu, built in 1741, was constructed to help defend the British possession from the Spanish. The small four-cannon fort was built using local limestone.

The fort played a role in US history, as it was the site of the newly-minted Continental Navy and Continental Marines’ first military action. In 1776, eight ships sailed to Nassau to capture weapons and ammunition from the British, including a gunpowder stockpile at the fort. The British were able to get the gunpowder safely away, but the Marines took the fort, occupied the island, and retrieved a large number of British weapons in the Battle of Nassau .

Tours of Fort Montagu are conducted daily from 8 AM until 3 PM.

How to get to Montagu Beach from Nassau cruise port

Montagu Beach is located just off East Bay Street, about a mile past the entrance to the ferry. The jitneys don’t run as frequently to and from this beach, so you may want to consider taking a taxi to save time.

With average traffic, it’s about a seven-minute ride each way. Make sure that you ask your taxi driver to pick you up from the beach at a specific time since it’s not a popular spot to find waiting cabs.

Or you might prefer to walk! Montagu Beach is only 2.2 miles (3.6 km) from Nassau’s cruise terminal.

To access the beach, you can enter right from the parking lot in front of Fort Montagu.

Best overall beach in Nassau for cruisers

Cable Beach , one of the prettiest beaches in Nassau, is also easy to get to from the cruise port. Its two-and-a-half miles of white sand ensure that it won’t be quite as crowded as Junkanoo Beach when cruise ships are in port (but it’s still pretty busy!)

Cable Beach is a public beach but it’s home to a number of resort hotels, each with its own private beach entrance. Once you hit the sand, the beach itself is public – just don’t try to access or exit the beach through any of the resort entrances!

For visitors without a resort pass, lounger and umbrella rentals are available to the public from various vendors, along with jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards, and inflatable rafts. Parasailing and banana boat rides are also popular activities at Cable Beach.

How to get to Cable Beach from Nassau cruise port

Cable Beach is located in the center of the north coast of Paradise Island, off West Bay Street. It’s a twenty-minute ride from the cruise terminal by taxi.

Or, you could save some money and flag down a jitney to one of the public access points.

There’s public access to the beach in a couple of spots. Goodman’s Bay Park on the far east end offers public restrooms and outside showers. The park also has a playground for the kids, with swings, slides, and seesaws.

You can also reach the beach from a more central location, closer to all of the action. Just look for the Starbucks by the roundabout on the corner of West Bay Street and Skyline Drive, and follow the driveway to your right to the beach access point.

There are no public toilets at this entrance, but there are lots of restaurants and cafés nearby where patrons can use their facilities.

A day in Nassau, Bahamas: What to do while your cruise is in port

The territory of the Bahamas includes 700 islands and 2,000 rocks and cays spread across 100,000 square miles of the North Atlantic Ocean. Technically, it's not part of the Caribbean region . It is, however, a warm-weather destination on the edge of the Caribbean and shares many of its cultural traditions, cuisine and music.

When it comes to oceangoing vacations, the Bahamas can accurately be described as the industry's leading destination, with the capital city of Nassau being cruising's number one port of call. In 2019, the Bahamas hosted 5.43 million cruise visitors, more than any other global cruise port, and it greeted nearly 1 million more travelers than Cozumel, Mexico, the next most-visited port. Indeed, the modern cruise industry's first itineraries in the 1970s focused on three- and four-day Bahamas sailings from Miami .

The archipelago's spectacular natural environment features brilliant blue skies, warm temperatures and exceptionally clear waters. But Nassau, located on 112-mile-long New Providence island, is also a metropolitan center full of modern amenities and impressive African, Caribbean and colonial cultural and historic sites.

Paradise Island, positioned immediately to Nassau's north, has large hotels and all-inclusive resorts that offer day packages for cruise visitors, providing access to premium golf (at the Baha Mar resort ), casino gaming (at Atlantis) as well as restaurants, shops and nightlife.

Not surprisingly, Nassau is a staple port of call for a wide variety of operators. Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean all sail here, as does luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises, premium cruise operators Celebrity Cruises and Oceania Cruises and budget operator Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. All of those lines will call at Nassau in 2021.

What we could do without

Nassau is on an island within a vast archipelago. Many products are necessarily imported and that means prices, including meals at restaurants, can be high. Nassau can also feel a bit "touristy" at times, as the Prince George Wharf cruise ship dock can host as many as five large cruise ships at once. On busy days, cruise travelers are ubiquitous around the downtown area.

Nassau basics

Nassau is extremely popular as a warm-weather getaway destination that's closer to the U.S. Atlantic Coast than most Caribbean basin countries. As a plus, while technically not located in the Caribbean, Nassau and the Bahamas offers the same splendid sunny skies, brilliant blue waters and amazing culture and traditions.

On the small island of New Providence, Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas archipelago. The port is normally a bustling affair, as disembarking guests walk from the pier to Bay Street, parallel to the water, and the downtown shopping area where you'll find tour guides and Jet Ski, beach and watersports excursion operators, taxis for hire, scooter rentals, craft and souvenir shops, and hair braiders.

Nassau's nearby Paradise Island district offers beaches, restaurants and shops as well as the Atlantis megaresort, which is among several properties offering day packages for cruisers in search of a daylong all-inclusive experience. The good news is that, with a little preparation, it will be easy to find the right Nassau activity to fit your personal vacation style.

Arrival details

Cruise ships visiting Nassau dock at the Prince George Wharf within short walking distance of Bay Street and the downtown district. Passengers who are booked on excursions arranged by the cruise line will find providers staged in areas leading from the dock. Private operators, including those who booked tours with guests separate from the cruise line, will be found beyond the first group.

Time zone: The Bahamas operates on Eastern Standard Time.

Language: English is the official language.

Currency: The Bahamian dollar is equivalent to the U.S. dollar. Both are widely accepted, and generally, it's not necessary to exchange money. If you want to exchange money, you can do so aboard your ship, although you can usually obtain a better rate at a local bank or ATM. Several banks are located on Parliament Street, a short walk from the cruise terminal. Numerous ATMs are also found around downtown.

How to get around

On foot: Many of Nassau's historic sites and the Bay Street retail district are within walking distance of the cruise ship pier and the downtown area. Bay Street is lined with shops, restaurants and bars, and cruisers so inclined can spend the day strolling the area. Just put on your sneakers, disembark your ship, take a few steps and start exploring. There are also ferries to nearby attractions and it's also possible to rent a car or motor scooter.

By taxi: Taxi operators are staged around the Prince George Wharf area. Taxis are not metered, so always negotiate the fare before entering the vehicle.

By bus: Nassau's public buses are known as jitneys and offer a thrifty and convenient alternative to car rentals or taxis. The jitneys cost around $1.25 per person and stop at popular spots, including Cable Beach (see below).

Top sights and shore excursions

Nassau is a surprisingly diverse port. Beach lovers and travelers who enjoy water sports, diving or snorkeling will find a wide variety of excursions and activities to suit their tastes. Nassau is also filled with historic sites and shopping opportunities. Yet visitors are missing out on genuine colonial-era history if they don't also spend time exploring the historic architecture and attractions located steps from the cruise pier. You can book excursions through your cruise line or independently. And, don't forget that the Chase travel portal offers excursions bookable with cash or Ultimate Rewards points.

Here are some favorite pastimes for cruisers visiting Nassau.

Historic sites

Nassau's history is closely tied to the Caribbean pirate era of the 17th and 18th centuries, when the town served as a pirate sanctuary until 1718 when British Governor Woodes Rogers expelled the buccaneers. Today's downtown district offers 20 square blocks featuring architecture and monuments dating to this compelling era, most within walking distance of the cruise pier.

As a result, visitors can take a DIY-approach to exploring Nassau with help from the Bahamas.com website. Or, book a cruise ship excursion highlighting historic forts, Bahamian cuisine, "land and sea" programs, private island experiences and even Junkanoo-style music and dancing.

Historic sites near Prince George Wharf include Parliament Square, which houses the Bahamas' House of Assembly, the Senate Building and Supreme Court in pink pastel colonial buildings. A statue of Queen Victoria erected in the early 1900s also stands at the site.

The Queen's Staircase or "66 Steps" are framed by lush gardens and link downtown Nassau with Fort Fincastle. Ascend to the top of the staircase to reach Fort Fincastle, constructed in the late 1700s atop Bennett's Hill. Sweeping views from the fort's bluffs encompass downtown Nassau, the harbor and the cruise ship dock.

Bahamian culture was also shaped by Africans who arrived in the territory as slaves from Sierra Leone and other West African nations. Other Black people traveled to the Bahamas directly from Africa, Bermuda and Haiti, some enslaved by ex-British loyalists from Georgia and South Carolina, and others as ex-soldiers who won their freedom fighting for the British during the American Revolutionary War.

Junkanoo Beach is approximately a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, offering travelers an inexpensive and convenient way to enjoy some sun and fun. Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is a 20-minute walk or short taxi ride away from Nassau just over the bridge that spans the islands. Cable Beach is about a 20-minute drive from Prince George's Wharf and is accessible via taxi. A cheaper alternative is the No. 10 bus, which charges around $1.25 per person. The 2.5-mile-long beach is often described as Nassau's best, but it's one of hundreds across the Bahamas distinguished by bleach-white sands and remarkably clear blue waters. Cable Beach is home to several top Nassau resorts and offers a full array of watersports activities.

The turquoise water of the Bahamas is so clear that you can watch marine life 200 feet below. It’s not surprising that about four million cruise passengers come to Nassau each year. 

If you are looking for the best beaches in Nassau for cruisers, you don’t have to go far. Located off the coast of Florida, Nassau is a popular stop for cruise operators on three-to-seven-night sailings.

The weather is mild almost year-round in Nassau, with temperatures ranging from 66 degrees in the winter into the 90s in the summer. The dry season runs from December to May, so you don’t have to worry about rain and hurricanes. Most rain comes in the summertime with up to eight inches in the summer months.

Getting Around

There are many beaches in Nassau, including some that are very popular with cruisers. Depending on the beach, these are the options you have to get there: city bus, taxi, shore excursion, water shuttle, or walk.

If you’re on a cruise ship, you can take a local bus to the beach from the port. It will cost you about $5 each way, just make sure you have appropriate change.

You can also take a taxi to one of the beaches from the port. There are no rideshare companies in the Bahamas, so a taxi is the best option if you want to get there with no lines or waiting. Cabs are always lined up at the pier, be aware they typically charge a per person fee.

Make sure you add a cushion when returning to the ship in case of an accident or road closure. The taxi driver can tell you when you should head back to the ship. Most beaches have taxis lined up at the entrance, especially on days when there are many ships in Nassau.

2. Cabbage Beach

The route from Prince George Cruise Port to Junkanoo Beach runs approximately 3.5 kilometers or 1 mile. You can get here within ten minutes. It is one of the closest beaches in Nassau near the cruise port.

Junkanoo beaches are busy. The music is intense and the atmosphere of partying is intense. The clean, blue waters and sands are beautiful though there is no solitude. This might not be the best beach for families. But it is a popular spring break beach.

Despite the clearness of the waters – the sand may not be as soft and powdery as some might like. You will find a more rock-like mix compared to other beaches around the Nassau cruise ports. Often sea glass is mixed with seawater, which might be nice if your family likes to hunt for beautiful sea glass on the beach. Many cruisers, though, enjoy softer white sand beaches. You’ll have to make the decision as to what kind of beach is best for you. Junkanoo is close to everything so it will not be a secluded paradise, but rather a social scene. The views at Junkanoo Beach are nice because you can see the cruise ships and boats coming and going.

Best for a Classic Bahamas Beach Day: Cable Beach

Cable Beach used to be the epicenter of the island’s tourism industry, back when travel to The Bahamas was reserved for the rich and famous. Its name comes from its history of being home to the first underwater telegraph cable from the U.S. that connected to the island.

Today, Cable Beach is one of the best beaches in Nassau, thanks to its long stretch of soft white sand and a long, shallow drop-off. The water here is swimming-pool teal and some of the clearest you’ll ever see.

Cable Beach is a public beach, so you can rent a chair, make use of the beach amenities, and unwind on the sand. Beach bars line the long stretch of sand, so you can take a break from the sunshine by grabbing some Bahamian drinks and snacks from a local restaurant (the shrimp crunch wrap from the Tropics on Bay bar makes for a light and tasty lunch). This beach is also the starting point for many of the island’s sunset cruises and sailing tours.

If you’re looking for adventure, Blue Lagoon has that, too. 8 Free (or Cheap) Cruise Shore Excursions in Nassau, Bahamas

Whether you’re spending your entire family vacation in Nassau or just passing through during your Caribbean cruise, there are plenty of free or super-cheap things to do in the capital city of the Bahamas .

1. Junkanoo Beach

As one of the few free beaches in Nassau that’s close to the cruise port, Junkanoo Beach can get crowded. But it offers white, sugary sand and clear, blue waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Located at Bay and Nassau streets near Courtyard by Marriott Nassau Downtown/Junkanoo Beach , this free beach is about a 15-minute walk or so from the cruise port terminal. Chairs and umbrellas can be rented from beach vendors and food is available for purchase from beach vendors and restaurants that line the street behind the beach. Restrooms and changing areas are also available at this beach.

2. Nassau Straw Market

Browsing Nassau’s Straw Market , located on Bay Street, is a must when visiting the area—and it’s free! (Of course, the shopping is another story!) This souvenir market offers everything from straw hats and beach bags to wood carvings and paintings . Be prepared to be approached by the vendors selling their wares, but know that you can haggle for the best price.

3. Spray Fountains Outside Straw Market

Located just outside the Straw Market on Bay Street is a courtyard area with splash pad-like spray fountains situated in the center. It’s the perfect place for kids to cool off! There are also shaded areas to sit and put your feet up, plus even more vendors selling goods.

4. Woodworking

In and around the Straw Market area are vendors selling wooden sculptures and figurines. Families will find some of the craftsman working on their next creations. It’s fun to watch how quickly and creatively they can chisel and hammer the wood. Take a minute to watch and admire the craft at no cost.

5. Queen’s Staircase

The 66 steps of the Queen’s Staircase (named after Queen Victoria) were carved out of limestone rock in the 1790s. This Bahamian landmark is a pretty spot surrounded by limestone and greenery, and makes for a great photo opportunity or a place to have the kids burn off some energy, free of charge.

6. Fort Fincastle

Once you’ve climbed the Queen’s Staircase, you’ll be rewarded with a gorgeous view and the chance to explore a fort that—like the Queen’s Staircase—was cut from limestone in the 1790s. Fort Fincastle overlooks the city of Nassau and Paradise Island, and was actually used as a lighthouse until 1817. Free, guided tours of the fort take place daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; donations are encouraged. Some cruise lines offer tours of the fort (including transportation) for a fee.

 7. The Pirates of Nassau Museum

Located near the Straw Market and about an eight-minute walk from the cruise port terminal is The Pirates of Nassau Museum . Kids will love to climb aboard the life-size pirate ship and experience what it was like to live like a pirate in the 1700s. The self-guided tour offers plenty of details on the pirates of the Bahamas and how they lived. It takes about 30 minutes to an hour to walk through the museum. There is also a pub onsite, perfect for grabbing lunch after your pirate adventure. Admission for adults is $13.50 and $6.75 for children age 4 to 17.

8. Ardastra Gardens and Zoo

The Ardastra Gardens and Zoo , the only zoo in the Bahamas, is best known for its flamingos. There are more than 200 flamingos at this zoo, and three times daily, these pink beauties march about to say hello to visitors. The flamingos are not afraid of people and are happy to pose on one foot right next to you for a flamingo photo! More than 200 other types of animals can be found at the zoo, including domestic pigs, lemurs, iguanas, turtles and parrots, and they are all surrounded by gorgeous greenery and colorful flowers throughout the 4 acres of tropical gardens. Admission is $18.75 for adults and $9.50 for children age 4 to 12; it’s free for children under 3 years old.

The Nassau Cruise Port: Travel Tips and Things To Do

T he Bahamas is an extremely popular travel destination in the West Atlantic Ocean. The relatively small tropical paradise borders Haiti, Cuba, the United States and Turks and Caicos. The capital city of the Bahamas, Nassau is located on New Providence Island and is a tourism hub. Nassau has established itself as a thriving cultural center and well known cruise ship stop. The destination is popular for its gorgeous white sand beaches and overall naturally beautiful landscape, which is perfect for water sports and waterside relaxation. The pristine coral reef and the possibility of exciting close encounters with marine life are some of the reasons Nassau is a great place to visit. 

Due to Nassau’s highly frequented dock, visitors may be under a time limit if they travel by boat or have to deal with crowds during port days. While many tourists only get to enjoy Nassau’s unique offerings during short periods of time, there are ways to best utilize time in the capital city. So, we have compiled some insightful information about the destination and how travelers can make the most of their trip, whether they are cruisers or looking to have a long term stay near the Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) . 

Is the Nassau Cruise Port Popular?

Nassau’s cruise port is one of the most popular ports in the world. Each year it attracts nearly 4 million cruise passengers . The port even recently (the first phase opened to the public in 2023) underwent a redevelopment, which has contributed to its popularity and overall appeal. These improvements include the construction of many new buildings which have been strategically planned and placed to improve the flow of traffic.

The taxi dispatch center and optimized shopping strip are just some of the upgrades that lead into downtown Nassau. Ports with the latest accommodations and high quality attractions certainly reap the benefits of modernization, since more tourists consider the site to be much more welcoming and safe. 

What Cruise Lines Dock at Nassau’s Cruise Port?

The cruise port has the capacity to accommodate six cruise ships a day. This includes three oasis class or icon class vessels. The larger icon class ships hold more passengers (and are usually taller and longer) while oasis class ships are typically wider with more features. The increased tourist capacity is due to the ports’ expanded waterfront, which was completed through a $300 million dollar project.

Travelers have plenty of options since there is an array of cruise lines that dock at this Nassau port. The Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, MSC, Holland America, Azamara and Fred Olsen cruise lines stop in Nassau. 

Things To Do in Nassau, Bahamas

There are plenty of things to do near the popular Nassau Cruise Port. Some of the most popular tours include rum tasting experiences, sunset cruises and jet skiing. Both sunset cruises and jet skiing offer visitors of the Bahamas stellar views of the crystal clear waters. Rum tasting is a popular tour in Nassau due to the historical and cultural information that travelers can learn by sampling authentic Bahamian rum and learning from locals.

Other travelers that prefer self-led exploration may enjoy the Pirates of Nassau Museum, Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre or National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. These sites highlight the environmental, cultural and historical significance of Nassau and are top attractions of the area. 

There are a few outdoor attractions that are considered top experiences in Nassau. Travelers can swim with island pigs, which has become a very adorable and picturesque experience. The crystal clear waters of the Bahamas adds to the tranquil and playful nature of the cute pigs that roam the island. Jaw’s Beach is one of the highest rated waterside sites for snorkeling and soaking in the sun. This beach is less crowded and visitors may even be lucky enough to witness marine life like the sea turtle and manta ray. 

Transportation 

Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is only a few miles away from the port. Even travelers that are unfamiliar with the island should not have trouble flying in and getting a ride to their accomodation. Taxis are the most common mode of transportation for the tourist friendly city.

Since many visitors come from cruises that are docked there, many visiting travelers use taxis to get around the port. There is high traffic near the port, so there are many taxis available in the area. The taxi rates are set, so although travelers may notice prices vary by their particular destination they are unlikely to run into drivers that overcharge. For cruise passengers, it may be more affordable to secure transportation with the company that any tours are booked with. This ensures that they will not have to deal with additional stress and can simply sit back and relax.

There are also buses that are locally known as jitneys and are a popular form of public transportation. But riding the bus to and from excursions means that travelers will have to depend on the bus stop schedule and routes. For some, this lack of autonomy may be less than appealing so travelers should be sure that their itinerary can handle standardized traveling times and differing rates depending on the destination.

Its location on Eleuthera  — a long, thin island in the Bahamas east of Nassau — provided an obvious start, and Disney leaned into the theme with the resort’s architecture, art, music, food, conservation efforts, cultural touchstones and entertainment options — including a raucous, cowbell-heavy celebration on the beach.

“We’re not putting you into a fictitious place. We’re not setting you into a different time. It’s here and now,” said Kevin Thomas, Walt Disney Imagineering creative director on the project.

Lookout Cay opened this month and is being visited primarily by DCL ships sailing out of Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale and Galveston, Texas.

“We thought about how many people are going to be experiencing the Bahamas for the first time, coming from around the world, the journey here and what can they take back,” Thomas said. “Not only that group but also those that have experienced the Bahamas and other destinations prior to this visit … We wanted to give a very unique experience to that.”

Central to the planning was a junkanoo — a year-end Bahamian celebration with music, dancing and bright, hand-crafted costumes. The Disney version includes Mickey Mouse and friends in new island wear created by Bahamian designer Theo Elyett.

Performers for “Rush! A Junkanoo Celebration” parade to a beat from near the resort entrance, through the mini marketplace and to the beach-facing Goombay Cultural Center for a bouncy performance before reversing their course.

The space is also a spot where kids can create junkanoo headpieces.

“We had an entire team dedicated to understanding what is junkanoo? What does it mean to the locals? What does it mean to the Bahamian culture?” said Rachel Quinn, vice president entertainment operations.

“The word authenticity is used a lot, but this was our north star,” she said.

“Junkanoo is a celebration of our tradition,” said Warren Andrew Pinder of the National Junkanoo Committee. “Our culture is colorful, is expressed through music, dance, a vibrancy led by the beat — that beat that we really cherish.”

The junkanoo show’s sounds waft across the pinkish sands and piercing blue waters of the beach. The site also includes an adults-only section, water-play areas, a nature trail and clusters of private cabanas.

There are multiple bars and a trio of restaurants with menus that include grilled spiced mahi-mahi with mango and pan-served Bahamian pigeon peas and rice.

An entertainment option on the southern end of the beach is the Fun in the Sun Beach Bash, a character-driven family games session accompanied by Disney music with Caribbean remixes. Music producer Victor Johnson fashioned these renditions.

“I actually watched a lot of the cartoons and put kind of my own Caribbean beat to it just watching cartoons on mute,” he said. “I kind of came up with a few genres, like subgenres, because our original genre of the Bahamas is goombay, and that includes junkanoo, rake and scrape and calypso and stuff like that. I came up with a rake and scrape arrangement for the Chip ‘n’ Dale song as well as a little Soka goombay arrangement.”

The task was daunting at first, because the original versions were classics, Johnson said.

“When I got the project, I was very intimidated because these are amazing songs already. But I went to sleep dreaming ‘Ch-Ch-Ch-Chip and Dale,’” he said.

An original song for the experience — “Everything Cool” — was written and performed by Bahamian musicians and recorded on Eleuthera.

The beach elements of Lookout Cay are connected by a curvy, elevated boardwalk.

“We wanted to minimize our impact on the natural environment and also make it accessible to all of our guests,” Thomas said. They also play off the multilevel terrain of the area, a contrast to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island that has been in use by the cruise line since 1998.

“Unlike Castaway, which is pretty flat terrain … this offered a little bit of a variety to that,” Thomas said.

Structures along this stretch have a high, curved roofline and provide shade, particularly in dining areas.

“The architecture is not traditional, but it has been inspired by the organic nature of what we can find here. With rooftops, the upper portions of all of these are inspired by shell patterns, shells that are bound along the Bahamian shores. … Once you get underneath that you really start to experience man’s touch on this,” Thomas said.

“I think Disney, in particular, gets more cruisers that aren’t necessarily from Florida than maybe some other cruise lines do and therefore if you’ve never been to the Bahamas, it’s a great introduction,” said Matt Roseboom, editor and publisher of Orlando-based Attractions Magazine. “Most people probably don’t know what junkanoo is.”

Roseboom previewed the destination last week.

“I think Castaway Cay is all about story and you might not know you’re in the Bahamas necessarily or on Disney’s stranded island,” he said.

“With this new island, it’s a little bit different, and they’re going all in on the Bahamas theme. … There’s really no Disney story to it, just the fact that you were in the Bahamas and here’s some information about Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, where you are.” he said.

Another obvious difference between Lookout Cay and Castaway Cay, which is about 130 miles to the northeast, is seen from the beginning of the visit. As ships approach the new destination, they dock at the end of a long, curved pier.

Passengers leave the ship, then travel the length of that connection — it’s a 10-15 minute walk — to catch a tram that connects to the bulk of Disney’s beach offerings after about 10 more minutes. But Castaway visitors are on that island right off the ship.

“We chose a pier because it had the least impact on the marine habitats in that area between the shore and where the ship had access,” said Bradley Watson, conservation program manager.

“The ship can only dock in a certain depth of water and, alternatively, some people might have dredged and made that so that the ship can come directly into shore. … Logistically, that would have been easier in the long run. But we chose the hard road,” he said.

The pier has an open-trestle design to minimize the effect on sea life, Disney officials said.

“Beyond just building the pier to go over that area, we relocated over 800 coral from that path to another spot on our site to ensure that they would continue to thrive as we put in that pier,” Watson said. “I think that it’s kind of a marvelous way that we put together infrastructure and nature.”

But for human visitors, the bridge to Lookout is “unusually long,” Roseboom said. “It needs shade; it needs seating. Hopefully, those will be added at some point. … They’re going to have issues with thunderstorms and trying to get back to the ship.”

The new destination includes a nature trail that showcases native species and leads to the namesake lighthouse.

“One of the best things we did is everything we didn’t do. We’re at less than 16% [development] of the site. It’s perfect, in my opinion,” Watson said.

“I’m really excited that Lookout Cay is now a gateway for so many other people to understand what it’s like to be a Bahamian,” he said.
