How to Travel From Hanoi to Ninh Binh + Perfect 1-3 Day Ninh Binh Itinerary

Looking for one of the best side trips from Hanoi? Ninh Binh, Vietnam’s ‘ Halong Bay on Land’, is a magical landscape of limestone karsts, winding waterways, and hidden temples.

My guide to travelling to Ninh Binh from Hanoi covers transport, accommodation, and the ideal 1-3 days Ninh Binh itinerary .

The very first side trip we took after moving to Hanoi for a year was a weekend away in Ninh Binh. We jumped on a train one Friday after work and the next morning, woke up in one of the most magical landscapes I’ve seen in Vietnam.

O ur first trip to Ninh Binh was one of those rare ‘perfect’ travel experiences. In fact, we loved Ninh Binh so much, we went back again a few months later – and again for a third time later in the year!

Ninh Binh travel FAQ

Why visit ninh binh.

Ninh Binh City, capital of Ninh Binh Province, is a relatively small community in Northern Vietnam’s Red River Delta. Its location less than 100km southeast of Hanoi makes it an ideal day or side trip from the capital.

Despite its close proximity to Hanoi, Ninh Binh is still a little quieter than other destinations in Northern Vietnam . It’s very popular among local tourists, and by no means off the beaten path . Still, many international travellers tend to skip it.

What makes Ninh Binh an ideal destination is its proximity to Tam Coc (7km away) and Trang An (8km away). Tam Coc-Bich Dong and Trang An are two protected landscapes that tourists can explore by boat. Most people travel to Ninh Binh for the natural beauty : Limestone karsts (the same rock formations you see in Halong Bay ), winding waterways, vast rice fields, and hidden temple complexes and ancient ruins are some of the highlights.

Vietnam’s capital was formerly located in Hoa Lu , just outside of Ninh Binh, and there are many historical points of interest to see around there, too.

A lot of people (especially Vietnamese tourists) come to Ninh Binh for the food . Goat is the local dish of choice here, and you’ll often see stalls by the side of the highway selling whole spit-roasted goats (vegetarians, be warned). If you see goat on the menu and you’re so inclined, I highly recommend trying it in Ninh Binh.

Ninh Binh or Halong Bay?

Because of the limestone karsts and waterways, Ninh Binh is often compared to Halong Bay. In fact, it’s sometimes referred to as the ‘Halong Bay on land’. (I actually grew to hate this phrase because it’s so overused by tourism operators in Hanoi! But it is a fair comparison.)

There are some big differences between Halong Bay and Ninh Binh. Most obviously, touring Ninh Binh doesn’t involve boarding a boat. We did a cruise of Halong Bay back in 2012 (the first time we travelled to Vietnam).

Having come away from that experience less than impressed, we weren’t fused on repeating the experience. If you’re in the same boat, Ninh Binh is a good alternative to Halong Bay .

Both Halong Bay and Ninh Binh are worth seeing once. Which one you choose is ultimately a personal preference. Ninh Binh is a lot easier to visit from Hanoi, so I would lean towards recommending it over Halong Bay (which I strongly believe is overrated and over-touristed, anyway).

When is the best time to visit Ninh Binh?

Ninh Binh is located in Northern Vietnam where there are four distinct seasons. Summer is very hot and winter, by contrast, can get very cold. Ninh Binh’s delta location means the landscape is very flat.

The area often experiences flooding and sometimes even landslides during the rainy season (approximately May to September), so it might be wise to plan a trip outside those times to be on the safe side.

Ninh Binh is surrounded by rice fields, so it’s a good idea to consider the timing of the rice harvest when planning your visit. November to early February (peak winter season) has nice, cool temperatures—but the landscape is parched and brown.

The fields are fully developed and fluorescent green around September (when I took most the photos featured here) and again in March/April. They turn a brilliant shade of golden yellow in October and May/June ahead of the bi-annual rice harvest.

Ninh Binh is a favourite spot for families travelling from Hanoi, and it can get very busy on weekends. I strongly recommend avoiding Ninh Binh on public holidays , when Trang An and Tam Coc balloon with domestic tourists.

How long to spend in Ninh Binh?

If you want to see everything Ninh Binh has to offer, I recommend spending two or three full days . Having said that, you could comfortably spend a weekend in Ninh Binh (arriving on Friday night and departing on Sunday afternoon) and still see the highlights.

One of the best things about Ninh Binh is the relaxing atmosphere. If you’re at the point in your Vietnam itinerary where you need a break, Ninh Binh is the perfect place to chill out and do nothing for a few days.

Planning on staying the night? Check out my round-up of the best Tam Coc bungalows, lodges and hotels .

Can I do a day trip to Ninh Binh from Hanoi?

Yes, it’s certainly possible to visit Ninh Binh as a day trip from Hanoi . Considering the journey time from Hanoi, it will be a long day and your time in Ninh Binh will be a bit rushed.

But if you’re on a tight itinerary, an organised day trip is a perfectly acceptable option. Check out this day trip to Ninh Binh from Hanoi .

Another option is to join a tour from Ninh Binh. This would be ideal if you have just one full day and you want to see everything. I recommend this full-day small group tour itinerary .

How to get around Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh’s attractions are quite spread out so it’s ideal (though not essential) to have access to your own transport. 24-hour motorbike hire is a popular option; expect to pay between 120K and 200K VND.

Since we don’t drive, we used bicycles to get around the mostly flat landscape. (Free bicycles came include with our hotel rate, but it’s also possible to hire bicycles in Tam Coc for around 50K/day).

If the weather is bad or you’re short on time, you can hire a car and driver to take you around for the day. The price for a car ranges from about 50 to 100 USD, depending on how far afield you want to travel. Your guesthouse or hotel should be able to organise this for you.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh train

Don’t miss out! Book your train ride from Hanoi to Ninh Binh on 12GoAsia .

There are six trains daily connecting Ninh Binh City and Hanoi. The journey between stations takes between 2.5 to 3 hours. We travelled by train the first time we visited Ninh Binh and found it easy and convenient.

It’s also extremely affordable, with soft-seat tickets starting from just 80K VND (less than $5) per person. Domestic trains in Vietnam have come a long way since we first travelled in 2012. The train to Ninh Binh from Hanoi is clean and comfortable for the most part, with bathrooms and snack carts on board.

If you’re travelling during peak time (high season or on a weekend/public holiday), you might consider buying your Hanoi to Ninh Binh train tickets in advance. If you’re in Hanoi, you can book online through Vietnam Railways.

Once you purchase tickets, you have a 24-hour window to present yourself at the station, pay in cash, and collect your paper ticket. Alternatively, use the link below to book tickets through 12GoAsia.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh trains depart from Hanoi’s main railway station at 120 Le Duan, and stop at Phu Ly and Nam Dinh before calling in to Ninh Binh’s railway station.

The train crosses over a river bridge right before the Ninh Binh station – this is a good landmark to look out for so you know when to jump off (but don’t be too worried – there are always other passengers alighting at Ninh Binh).

See below for details on how to travel from Ninh Binh City to your accommodation in Tam Coc.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh bus

Hanoi has several large bus stations servicing different locations in Northern Vietnam. Giap Bat (pronounced ziap bat ) Bus Interchange is located in the city’s south and has buses and vans frequently departing for Ninh Binh. To get to Giap Bat from the Old Quarter, take a Grab or taxi, or use public bus number 03A or 08A.

If you haven’t taken a bus in Hanoi before, this is basically how it works: A number of different companies use the interchange and there’s fierce competition for who can fill up a bus first (a van usually won’t leave until it’s full). Once you enter the station building (or sometimes just the carpark), company reps will descend on you and try to recruit you onto their bus.

You can either ask them for Ninh Binh and pay the conductor or driver once you get to the bus out the back, or bypass them and head for a ticket window (look for Ninh Binh painted above the window). Once you have a ticket, someone will appear to chaperone you out back to the right bus .

The journey from Hanoi to Ninh Binh by bus can take anywhere between 1.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic, and costs between 100K VND and 160K VND per person . The most annoying thing about travelling by minivan (apart from the Hanoi traffic) is trying to make it out of the station – drivers will often spend up to an hour hanging around the front of the station trying to recruit more passengers.

We once sat outside Giap Bat for a full 60 minutes while the driver tried to fill the empty seats. If you’re really savvy, you can do as the Vietnamese do and walk south along the road Giap Bat is on. You’ll see crowds of people waiting to flag down almost-full buses. From there, you can just wait for a Ninh Binh van to pull up and pull you inside.

Note that Giap Bat bus station closes at around 5.30/6pm . After that, it can be difficult to get a bus to Ninh Binh City. We tried it once and ended up having to change buses in the middle of a highway halfway between Hanoi and Ninh Binh. The first bus for Ninh Binh from Hanoi departs at around.

Also note that not all Ninh Binh buses go to the city itself – remember that Ninh Binh is also the name of the province, and some buses just service the more rural parts. Most drivers should recognise that tourists want to go to the city, but to be sure, you can ask for Ninh Binh City (Thanh Pho Ninh Binh) .

Once in Ninh Binh, the bus will make lots of stops along the highway to let people out. Most buses continue all the way to the centre of town around Ninh Binh Train Station. From there, it’s easy to pick up a taxi.

Book your bus from Hanoi to Ninh Binh on 12GoAsia .

Ninh Binh to Tam Coc

Since most decent accommodation is located outside the city, you’ll next need to travel from the train station or bus stop in Ninh Binh City to Tam Coc. The easiest option is a metered taxi . We did this several times and never paid more than 150-200K VND .

Expect to pay significantly more at night. In all likelihood, the driver will ask for a flat fee rather than using the metre if you’re travelling after dark. Alternatively, you can ask your guesthouse to organise a car transfer for you.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh taxi

A taxi (i.e. private car and driver) to Ninh Binh from Hanoi will cost you between 60-100 USD one-way . Organise through your accommodation in Hanoi or Ninh Binh, or book in advance using the link above.

Book a taxi from Hanoi to Ninh Binh on 12GoAsia .

Hanoi to Ninh Binh by motorbike

It’s also possible to travel to Ninh Binh from Hanoi by motorbike. We had a few friends (relatively experienced drivers) who did this with no trouble. Follow the route marked out on Google Maps; you can also stop off at the Perfume Pagoda along the way.

If travelling by bike, familiarise yourself with the local road rules (or lack thereof) first, wear an international standard motorbike helmet, and check that your travel insurance will cover you in case of an accident.

Sapa to Ninh Binh

The best way to travel to Ninh Binh from Sapa is to first take the overnight sleeper train from Lao Cai to Hanoi , and then transfer to a bus or minivan . You can buy a combo ticket through 12GoAsia using the link below.

Otherwise, organise your train to Hanoi, jump in a taxi to the bus station, and make your own way to Ninh Binh by minivan using the instructions in the previous section.

Cat Ba Island to Ninh Binh

To get to Ninh Binh from Cat Ba, you’ll first need to transit through Haiphong (the closest town to Cat Ba on the mainland), and again through Hanoi.

It’s not possible to do this all on the one ticket, but agents might be able to organise transfers for you.

Otherwise, travel from Cat Ba to Hanoi with a company such as Cat Ba Express and from there, make your way to the bus station and pick up a van to Ninh Binh using the instructions in the previous section . The journey will take about 6-7 hours all up.

Phong Nha (Dong Hoi) to Ninh Binh

There are overnight sleeper trains from Dong Hoi (the closest town to Phong Nha) that go all the way to Ninh Binh City. The journey takes 8.5 hours, arriving in Ninh Binh around 9.30am.

Where to stay in Ninh Binh

Give Ninh Binh City a miss; it’s much, much nicer to stay out of town near Trang An or Tam Coc. Most homestays and bungalows are located closer to Tam Coc , with some properties featuring water views.

Budget: Tam Coc Homestay is a good budget option in Ninh Binh, with prices starting from 14 USD/night. The location in Tam Coc, with views of rice fields and karsts, is divine. This is probably the best value you’ll find for bungalow-style accommodation in Ninh Binh. Check availability & prices for Tam Coc Homestay on Agoda .

Mid-range: For something slightly more upmarket, try renting an entire private bungalow at Nguyen Shack . The location, close to the entrance to Mua Cave, is convenient if you plan on walking up to the lookout for sunrise or sunset. Check availability & prices for Nguyen Shack on Agoda .

Luxe: Mua Caves Ecolodge is an ideal choice if you’re looking for something that’s not a bungalow but is still in Tam Coc. Check availability & prices for Mua Caves Ecolodge on Agoda .

Ninh Binh City: If you find yourself needing to stay overnight in Ninh Binh city, I recommend Viet Nhat . It’s located right opposite the train station (literally just a 5 minute walk), so it’s perfect if you’re getting in late at night or wanting to get an early start the next day. Rates are very reasonable, rooms are basic but clean, and breakfast comes included in the rate. Check availability & prices for Viet Nhat on Agoda .

Things to do in Ninh Binh: Recommended Ninh Binh itinerary

Try out this full-day or two-day Ninh Binh itinerary. You’ll also find some attractions further afield if you plan on spending more time in the area.

Day one: Ninh Binh highlights

If you’ve only got one day to spend in Ninh Binh, start with these essential Ninh Binh must-sees.

Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex

  • View the location on Google Maps
  • Time to spend there: 2 hours
  • Entrance fee: 200K VND/person (including the boat) + a tip for your driver

The UNESCO-listed Trang An Scene Landscape Complex ( Tràng An ) is Ninh’s Binh’s crowning jewel and by far the best thing to do in Ninh Binh.

Sampan boats take tourists on two set routes through the complex, which features caves and grottoes, temples, and incredible limestone formations .

When we did the tour, we stopped to get out of the boat twice: First to visit the set of King Kong: Skull Island (part of the movie was filmed in Trang An), and secondly for the Vu Lam Royal Step-Over Place , a 13th-century sanctum from the Trang Dynasty.

Trang An is an incredibly slick operation, with ticket windows, turnstiles, and a snack shop on site. Every passenger must wear a lifejacket.

Boats are new and well-maintained; and the boat drivers wear uniforms. After the two-hour ride is finished, guests are encouraged to fill out a feedback form.

Cycle through the rice fields to Tam Coc-Bich Dong

The ride between Trang An and Tam Coc-Bich Dong is 7km (about 40 minutes) if you follow the roads. We decided to take a few shortcuts through the rice paddies instead. We ventured off road at times, navigating the narrow, muddy dykes that separate the fields.

It took us a bit longer to get there, but riding through the green fields between the karsts was one of the highlights of our time in Ninh Binh.

Tip: As you approach Tam Coc, ladies try to corral you into their parking lots. This is paid parking (although the fee is very small). It is possible to take your bike all the way into town and park closer to the dock.

Tam Coc-Bich Dong

  • Time to spend there: 2.5 hours
  • Entrance fee: 120K VND/person (plus 150K VND for boat hire)

Tam Coc-Bich Dong ( Tam Cốc-Bích Động ) is part of the Trang An complex and offers similar views and similar water-oriented activities. The Tam Coc part of the site is a set of three limestone caves ; Bich Dong is a 15th century pagoda complex set on a nearby mountaintop.

Like at Trang An, there are sampans waiting at the Tam Coc dock to paddle tourists through the caves and along the waterways. If you’ve ever seen footage of women rowing with their feet , this is where the magic happens (although we didn’t see it ourselves).

Tam Coc is much less organised than Trang An and the boats and gear are not so well-kept. There is a ticket booth at the dock, but many people opt to approach a boat driver independently and haggle for a better price.

The 3km route takes about 2 hours to complete , and costs 150K VND per boat (charged on top of the entrance fee), making it significantly more expensive than Trang An.

If you’re not up for another boat ride, you can just spend some time wandering around the dock and admiring the brightly painted sampan boats .

More Ninh Binh inspiration: My top photos of Tam Coc boat dock .

NOTE: If you only have time for one boat ride, I recommend Trang An over Tam Coc.

Tam Coc cafes & bars

Tam Coc town (the area around the boat dock) is pretty touristy. Amidst the backpacker hostels, dive bars and local restaurants, we were surprised to stumble on La Carte Lounge Bar , a gorgeous cafe and boutique hotel.

It’s a nice spot to stop off for a smoothie or beer before the last leg of your journey.

Looking for a side trip from Hanoi? It's easy to visit Ninh Binh from Hanoi. This post covers transport plus a Ninh Binh itinerary (one or two-day options).

Mua Caves & Lying Dragon Mountain

  • Getting there from Tam Coc:
  • Entrance fee: 100K VND/person (or free for Mua Caves Ecolodge guests)

Mua Caves ( Hang Múa ) is a series of grottoes of various sizes set in the bottom of a limestone mountain. What most people come here for is the climb up to the top of Lying Dragon Mountain . Roughly 450 stairs lead to the top, where the path converges into two final stages.

One side—the higher path—leads to a stone dragon statue and a view of the staircase and tower below. The climb is quite steep, so it’s advisable to wear appropriate shoes and carry drinking water with you. There is no shade, so I strongly advise against doing the climb in the hottest part of the day. Sunrise and sunset views are both nice.

Note that the path has no lights and so closes at dusk—budget enough time to get back down before it gets too dark.

Day Two: Historic Ninh Binh

If you have a second day up your sleeve, take a closer look at Ninh Binh’s historical and religious points of interest.

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

  • Time to spend there: 2-3 hours
  • Entrance fee: 10,000VND/person (15,000VND with a motorbike)

Capital of Vietnam throughout the 10th and 11th centuries, Hoa Lu (Cố đô Hoa Lư) was once a vast complex of inner and outer citadels, palaces, temples and shrines. All that remains of Hoa Lu today is a few relics—the remains of an ancient temple and a collection of new pagodas dedicated to Hoa Lu’s former dignitaries.

Đinh Tiên Hoàng (Tien Hoang Temple) and Đinh Lê Đại Hành (the Temple of Le Dai Hanh) are the two most popular points of interest. The Truong Yen Festival is held in Hoa Lu every year for Tet (Vietnamese New Year).

Bai Dinh Pagoda

  • Getting there from Hoa Lu: 9.5km (15 minutes’ drive) via Trang An road
  • Entrance fee: Free

The largest pagoda complex in Vietnam, Bai Dinh (Chùa Bái Đính) consists of a series of Buddhist halls set on a mountain and interlaced by a road. The old original temple and newer temples (many are still under construction) are a popular pilgrimage site for locals.

Many of the newer temples are ostentatious—with huge gold-coloured Buddha statues, flashing lights and decadent alters . It takes about 20 minutes to walk from one end of the complex to the other. There is a vegetarian restaurant inside the complex if you want to break here for lunch.

Looking for a side trip from Hanoi? It's easy to visit Ninh Binh from Hanoi. This post covers transport plus a Ninh Binh itinerary (one or two-day options).

Phat Diem Cathedral

  • Getting there from Bai Dinh Pagoda: 40km (an hour’s drive) via highway QL12B
  • Time to spend there: 1-2 hours

Built between 1875 and 1899, Phat Diem (Tòa Giám Mục Phát Diệm) is a Catholic Cathedral and one of many churches that pop up out of the ricefields around this part of Northern Vietnam.

It takes a bit of effort to get down to the cathedral, which is very close to the coast, but it’s worth it to see the magnificent and ornately decorated stone and ironwood construction. Mass is held inside the cathedral at 6am, 10am and 4pm daily .

Day 3: More places to visit near Ninh Binh

If you have more time to spend in the Ninh Binh area, try one of these nearby national parks .

Pu Luong Nature Reserve

It wouldn’t be possible to visit Pu Luong Nature Reserve (Khu bảo tồn Thiên nhiên Pù Luông) in a day from Ninh Binh, but it does make for an ideal next-stop, especially if you’re travelling onward towards Mai Chau.

Located 130km (4 hours’ drive) northwest of Ninh Binh, Pu Luong is even bigger than Cuc Phuong and boasts some incredible trekking , waterfalls and village homestays . It’s one of my favourite off-the-beaten track spots in Vietnam .

This is also the best place to see Vietnam’s famous bamboo waterwheels , which are built by ethnic minority communities to channel water from streams into the rice fields.

Read next: Our visit to Pu Luong Nature Reserve—one of the most unique destinations in Northern Vietnam .

Van long wetland nature reserve.

Located 18km (30 minutes’ drive) north of Ninh Binh City on the way to Cuc Phuong, the Van Long Wetlands (Khu Bảo Tồn Thiên Nhiên Vân Long) is the place for bird-watching in Ninh Binh.

Spoonbills and geese, along with the Delacour’s langur (an endangered species of monkey only found in Northern Vietnam) are regularly spotted inside the reserve, which covers about 3,500 hectares. The best way to see the wetlands is by hiring a boat to take you out on the water .

Cuc Phuong National Park

Vietnam’s oldest national park, Cuc Phuong (Vườn Quốc Gia Cúc Phương) is located 60km (1.5 hours’ drive) from Ninh Binh City. Pristine rainforest, caves and grottoes, and thousand-year-old trees are among the park’s highlights.

There’s also a lake, a Hmong minority village and a primate rescue centre located within the park. Anyone interested in wildlife or trekking would do well to spend a night or two inside the park at one of three accommodations, exploring the furthermost reaches of the forest on foot, motorbike or bicycle.

If you only have time for a short visit, hire a bike at the park reception and try one of the shorter routes. You can find more information about visiting Cuc Phuong here .

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

If you’re visiting northern Vietnam, you absolutely must take a Hanoi to Ninh Binh day trip.

Ninh Binh was one of our favorite spots for a vacation photoshoot in all of Vietnam – the laidback vibe, the slightly lower crowds, the ability to bike around the countryside, and of course, those absolutely gorgeous mountain karsts dotting the landscape, peaking up between the waterways and canals, reminiscent of Halong Bay .

Plus, while you could definitely spend a couple of days in Ninh Binh, you can see and experience many of the highlights of Ninh Binh with a full day. It’s not far from Hanoi, so there’s really no reason to not go! 😉

Here’s everything you need to know about doing a day trip to Ninh Binh from Hanoi.

The tour below is the best tour option for a day trip to Ninh Binh from Hanoi – in addition to comfortable, round trip transportation and a tour guide, you get to visit the 4 main attractions in Ninh Binh, plus some biking in the countryside.

Most of the tours to Ninh Binh will take you to some, but not all of these attractions (which we’ll discuss in detail in the following sections), so this tour really offers the best experience.

Plus, it has a very high rating on Viator – 4.95 out of 5 stars!

➡️ Bus

Bus rides can take anywhere from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours to get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. These buses can be anything from a “regular” sized bus to a large van with comfortable seating.

Prices are generally around $10-15 per leg and there are many departure times throughout the day. This is a very economical way to get to Ninh Binh.

>> I recommend booking your bus tickets in advance. You can search all timetables and get electronic tickets for the bus on 12Go Asia here

➡️ Train

Like the bus, the train is an excellent option especially if you’re a budget traveler taking a day trip to Ninh Binh. Trains generally depart regularly throughout the day, and take 2 hours 15 minutes to arrive in Ninh Binh.

Seats generally cost anywhere from $10-12 per leg, and you can choose from regular seating, or sleeper berths (although it’s during daytime hours, I speak from experience when I say the sleeper berths can be nice for a quick nap).

>> Like the bus, I recommend booking your train tickets in advance on 12Go Asia. You can search all timetables and get electronic tickets for the train on 12Go Asia here

➡️ Private Car

Finally, a private car is a great way to get to and around Ninh Binh if you want to explore on your own terms but don’t want to handle or worry about any of the logistics or transportation.

The driver will pick you up from your hotel in Hanoi, drive you in an air-conditioned car to Ninh Binh, and then take you to whatever sites you want around the city, before returning- you to Hanoi at the end of the day. Your day and itinerary is totally customizable for what you want to do see and do.

Note that this is not a tour and a guide is not provided at the sites – you are renting the driver only.

>> Book your private car for your Ninh Binh day trip here

➡️ Rental Car

I would not recommend renting a car to do a Hanoi to Ninh Binh day trip. Drivers and traffic in Vietnam can be kind of crazy – there are scooters zipping around and between cars everywhere, and a lot of intersections operate under an “everyone goes at the same time and maneuvers their way around each other” rule.

While the countryside is a lot better than the cities, I would still hesitate to recommend a rental car, especially because there are so many other cheap and/or convenient ways to get to Ninh Binh.

Getting Around Ninh Binh

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

If you hired a private driver or are doing the guided tour, then your transportation around Ninh Binh is set!

However, if you came in on the train or the bus, then you’ll need a way to get between attractions. Sites in Ninh Binh that you’ll visit on your day trip are fairly spaced out, so you’ll need some way to get around.

I would recommend either renting a bike or a scooter ! Biking is a very popular way to get around Ninh Binh, and it’s incredibly scenic and idyllic, as you bike on little country roads past waterways and tall mountain karsts. Scootering around Ninh Binh is also really, really fun. Traffic tends to be very light and it’s easy to get around.

We actually did both – we rode a bike to two attractions that were closer (Hang Mua and the boat rides), and then took the scooter to the farther away spots (Bich Dong and Hoa Lu are farther out). These attractions are many kilometers apart from each other, so if you’re worried about getting tired, I’d just rent the scooter.

I’d look at renting a scooter from either Ninh Binh Motorbikes or Tra My Motorcycle Rental Shop . Both of these rental companies are located close to the Ninh Binh train station and offer good rates.

Taxis : You can also just take taxis around. As far as we could tell, there are no Grabs in Ninh Binh , but you should still be able to use the Grab app to call a taxi.

Things to Do on Your Day Trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

1. trang an/tam coc boat tour.

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

The boat tours in Ninh Binh are the #1 best thing to do in the region. If you do one thing here, let it be the boat tours!

On your boat tour from either Trang An or Tam Coc, you’ll board small, traditional boats that are paddled by locals wearing traditional cone leaf hats through waterways lined by tall, steep, sometimes almost vertical limestone mountains.

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

These boat tours take you through the vast network of waterways on the Ngo Dong River in Ninh Binh, where you’ll weave your way through the tall, sheer limestone karsts that dot the landscape. It really feels like something out of a fantasy novel!

During your tour, you’ll have the opportunity to briefly stop at several small islands to explore some temples. You’ll also paddle through several of the many caves in the region. At some points, the cave is so short that you’ll have to duck down in the boat.

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

There are two different locations where boat tours are offered: Tam Coc and Trang An. Rides from each place last about 2.5-3 hours. Here’s a brief breakdown of the differences between the two boat tours:

Trang An Boat Tour

Trang An is a very well-oiled machine, and they move people through the system very efficiently. You are required to wear a life jacket the entire time. There are 3 boat routes you can choose from in Trang An.

Each route will take you to amazing sights, but they vary by the number of caves and temples that they pass by. For example, only route three will take you through a 1 km long cave, the longest in the area.

  • Cost : 250,000 dong (about $10)
  • Hours : 7am-5pm

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

Tam Coc Boat Tour

In Tam Coc, your boat tour will take you through 3 caves. There will be salespeople not affiliated with the Tam Coc boat tour soliciting you to buy food/souvenirs at the end (you can just ignore them!)

At Tam Coc, instead of using their hands to row, the rowers actually use their feet to row! Life jackets are optional. Here you will wend through some agricultural areas, so you will get to see some rice fields, too.

  • Cost : 195,000 dong ($8.30)
  • Hours : 8am-6pm

We did the Trang An boat tour and loved it! If you’re doing the guided tour, you will be on the Tam Coc boat tour. Both locations have their own unique advantages, but either boat ride will be spectacular.

2 . Hang Mua Caves

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

The Hang Mua Caves do indeed have some small caves you can step into, but the real draw here are the viewpoints from the tops of the mountains. After climbing almost 500 steps, you’ll reach two different peaks with slightly different viewpoints.

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

Each peak has incredible overlooks of the tall limestone mountains and waterways of the Ngo Dong River. In the distance, you’ll see ridge after ridge after ridge of rocky limestone cliffs.

The views are absolutely stunning – and it makes for an excellent photo spot .

At the top of the staircase, where the stairs split, the right side will take you to an overlook with a pagoda. This side offers great views, but we felt like the staircase on the left definitely had a superior vantage point. The left side also has a dragon at the very top – you can climb up to the dragon, but the rocks are really pointy here, so be careful!

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

If you bike or scooter here, you’ll need to pay for parking. Parking is anywhere from 5-10k dong (20-40 cents USD) depending on how close to the entrance you park, and whether you’re parking a bike or scooter.

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

When you’re done on the mountain, don’t forget to walk the boardwalk through the lotus flower fields. These flowers are in bloom in June and absolutely breathtaking, but the fields still have a few flowers throughout the year and are pretty anytime.

  • Hours : 6am-7pm
  • Cost : 100,000 dong (approximately $4)

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

3. Hoa Lu Imperial Citadel

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

The Hoa Lu Imperial Citadel is a very important site in Ninh Binh, as it was actually the capital of Vietnam in the 11th and 12th centuries. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site , and a major tourist attraction in Ninh Binh.

Although the citadel itself is gone, many landmarks, monuments, temples, pagodas, and gates remain and are definitely worth seeing.

The most important spots in Hoa Lu are the two temples paying homage to the emperors who ruled from Hoa Lu. The first and biggest temple is the King Dinh Temple. This temple is nestled over 200 steps up in the mountains behind the citadel complex and offers great views over the citadel and valley. There are also three rooms of shrines inside the temple.

Then, stop by the smaller but also beautiful King Le Temple complex near the King Ding temple in Hoa Lu. Like King Dinh, this temple is divided into 3 shrines, to show reverence for these ancient kings.

In addition, there are also several pagodas, such as the Nhat Tru pagoda, and beautiful scenery, lakes, and mountains in the complex. It’s a significant and beautiful historical site in Ninh Binh.

  • Entrance Fees : 20,000 dong (about $1)

4. Bich Dong Pagoda

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

This gorgeous site, whose name translates to Emerald Green Grotto, is actually a complex with a set of three pagodas, built right into the side of the cliff wall. It is surrounded by mountains and a little lake, making it incredibly picturesque.

You’ll begin your journey by walking across this peaceful path through the gate to the temple courtyard. This lagoon is especially beautiful in June when it is packed with lotus flowers.

Once you’re looking at the temple inside the courtyard, there are two paths to follow. The right one goes up, through a gap in the mountains, and over to the valley behind.

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

To the left, you will find the pagodas. The first is near the courtyard, at the base of the mountain. This is also the largest. From there, a staircase takes you to the second pagoda, which is built into the mountain itself. It offers a nice view back over the lake.

At this viewpoint, turn around and face the mountain. There’s a very small little space on the left side, where you can actually go behind the building.

This space turns into a path that takes you up some stairs and through a tall cave, and out and up another set of stairs to the final, small stone pagoda and another beautiful viewpoint.

  • Cost : Free (but you will need to pay ~5000 dong (20 cents USD) for parking.
  • Hours : Open all the time

Getting Back to Hanoi

If you went with the small group tour or the private car , your transportation back to Hanoi is already arranged. You can just sit back and relax after your incredible day trip to Ninh Binh.

If you took the train or bus, make sure that you have a separate ticket for the return journey booked! When you’re booking tickets, it’s worth looking at both round-trip options and one-way options. It might work better for your schedule to take the bus out and the train home, or vice versa.

How I Would Recommend Structuring Your Ninh Binh Day Trip

If you’re going to Ninh Binh from Hanoi on your own (e.g. not part of the guided tour), then here is how I would recommend structuring your day in Ninh Binh:

  • Catch the first train or bus out of Hanoi, around 6am, or have your driver meet you around 6am to start the drive out of Hanoi. This will get you to Ninh Binh around 8am.
  • Pick up a rental scooter (if taking the train or bus), and then head straight to the Hang Mua caves. The sooner you get here, the better, as the overlooks aren’t huge and visiting with fewer people is ideal.
  • Go do the boat tour at Trang An or Tam Coc.
  • By this time, it’ll be around lunchtime. Stop at any small cafe or street food shop you pass by.
  • In the afternoon, you can visit the Hoa Lu Citadel, and then the Bich Dong Pagoda. Hoa Lu closes first, at 5pm, but Bich Dong is always open.
  • If you leave later in the morning, it’s possible you may run out of time to do both Hoa Lu and Bich Dong. In that case, you may end up needing to choose between the two locations.

Is One Day in Ninh Binh Enough?

Ninh Binh is a super fun spot to visit in the Vietnam countryside, and while there are other things you could do with more than one day in Ninh Binh (such as visit the Bai Dinh Complex, the Van Long Nature Preserve, or just spend more time biking around the countryside), it is definitely possible to experience the highlights in a day trip.

The Wrap Up – Is Ninh Binh Worth Visiting?

1000% I think Ninh Binh is worth visiting – we adored the charming country vibes, the interesting attractions, and the absolutely gorgeous mountain and water views.

This was probably our favorite spot in all of Vietnam and is definitely one of the best day trips from Hanoi that you can do!

Ninh Binh Day Trip From Hanoi

ninh binh day trip from hanoi

Leave in the morning for full day tour and get back Hanoi in the late afternoon.

To give some ideas for regular travelers, for expats, business people, office staffs who are looking for extra excursion from Hanoi, I traveled to Ninh Binh and listed out the must-see highlights of this beautiful Vietnamese typical countryside. No need to look for more but if you need personal assistance or agent support, please contact Vietnam Travel.

golden rice field in Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is perfect choice for natural loved travelers and an oasis for nature lovers. Vietnam’s It once the capital of Vietnam from 968 till 1009 in Dinh dynasty. Today the area is protected as UNESCO World Heritage Site, full of mossy pagodas, striking limestone karsts, and surreal landscapes . It is definitely the best opportunity  to explore the magnificent natural scenery and to enjoy the cultural and historical space of Vietnam.

How to get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Best time to visit ninh binh, 1. tam coc boat ride along ngo dong river, 2. bich dong pagoda & cave, 3. thai vi temple, 4. hang mua (mua cave), 5. bai dinh pagoda, 6. trang an complex, 7. hoa lu citadel, 8. cuc phuong national park, 9. local cuisines/drink, recommendations & tips.

Ninh Binh city is located just 100km south of Hanoi or almost 2 hours’ drive. You could travel by train, by motorbike, public bus and best is by private car/ van.

From Ninh Binh City  to Tam Coc + Bich Dong + Thai Vi temple about 11 km and you could go by car, motorbike, bike  but not train. From Ninh Binh city to Hoa Lu (other direction)about 9 km except train.

private car to Ninh Binh

You could choose any type of transportation but if you want to relax and enjoy most of the drive to Ninh Binh, my advice is by private car and a local guide who could provide nice source of information and local knowledge for your short valuable time of your holiday.

Riding motorbike or driving yourselves to Ninh Binh is not a bad idea, but traffic in Vietnam is bit different to the rest of the World and most of visitors would not choose that.

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

Almost any time of year is good to visit Ninh Binh. Like other places in the North, Ninh Binh is cool and dry from November to April and it is hot, humid with rainfalls in May and October. However, the rainy season is also when the rice fields are at their best vivid green, so it becomes a really good reason to visit all year round.

Photographers would choose mid of May when rice field turns to gold color and ready for harvest.

Things to do for a day tour in Ninh Binh

Ngo Dong River

The distinctive cliffs that jut up out of the countryside are often called “Ha Long Bay on land”. The most famous thing to do in Ninh Binh is tour Tam Coc by boat. Boat rides in Tam Coc run through the Ngo Dong River, starting from Van Lam Pier. The 2-hour round trip takes you through caves, rice fields and past the ever so unique karst rocks. You may feel surprise by the rowing technique of the woman here. They row the wooden paddles by their feet. Make sure you prepare a camera to film it. During the trip, you will feel like you are in a movie scene cruising down a natural kingdom. If you visit  Tam Coc – Bich Dong  in harvest season, the floating rice fields on the two sides of the river will turn golden. It is just a magical scene to witness.

No Ninh Binh itinerary would be complete without a trip to Bich Dong. Bich Dong, which means “green cave” is located 2 km from Tam Coc. Much like its name, Bich Dong nestles in the jungle of mountains, rivers, water, rice fields around in green. This stop will not disappoint you, be sure to take lots of photos.

Ninh Binh Excursion

Visitors can go biking in Tam Coc or from Tam Coc to Bich Dong to enjoy the beautiful and peaceful countryside of Ninh Binh. Biking from Tam Coc to Bich Dong, then stop at Bich Dong pagoda which entrance was built on a limestone island. Visitor will walk on a thin stone bridge to pass the gate to go inside the chambers of Bich Dong Grotto – ‘the second best grotto in Vietnam’.

From Tam Coc, you can pay a visit to Thai Vi Temple which distinguishes itself with unique features of worship and typical Vietnamese culture. The temple worships Kings and generals of Tran dynasty. During the trip, tourists will learn more about the history and establishment process of Vietnam. Thai Vi Temple also attracts visitors by its beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere.

Thai Vi temple

Thai Vi Temple is about 2-kilometer boat ride from Tam Coc. Do not miss it as you could stop at Van Lam Prier and take a short walk to the temple.

My advice is walking back to  boat station of Tam Coc so yo could see, feel and touch the atmosphere of typical countryside of Red river delta. If you not in the rush, may be stop by the local bar by road next to the rocks ( view to Ngo Dong river and rice field) and enjoy some cold beers or juices.

Mua Cave

With 12 kilometers drive from Ninh Binh centre or 5 kilometers northwest from Hoa Lu, you will see Bai Dinh pagoda – the second largest pagoda in Vietnam (after Tam Chuc pagoda), covering a total area of 539 hectares including 27 hectares of the old and 80 hectares of the newly built areas and others. This place is scenically set on the foothill of Dinh Mountain, surrounded by amazing views of the exquisite river valley below, and dotted with limestone karsts, which will take your breath away. The pagoda complexes stunningly boast an array of the most massive and magnificent refined Vietnamese architecture which will take a full day to explore. With sacred atmospheres and an intriguing Buddhism story told by your guide, you cannot fail to be enchanted. Some of the highlights are: 500 stone statues of “La Han” (Arhats), two huge bronze bells, one weighs 27 tons, the other 36 tons, three bronze statues of “Tam The” (50 tons each). The visit ends with a walk up the summit mountain to see the 100-ton bronze statue of Buddha Sakyamuni and a chance to enjoy the panoramic view of the picturesque landscape dotted with limestone mountains.

boating on Ngo Dong river

Trang An complex is UNESCO- listed series of grottoes carved from the region’s striking natural monoliths of limestone, which rises dramatically out from the rice paddy fields. Deep among the towering mountains, are pristine places of mystical valleys, numerous fresh water ponds, and jungle. Visitors will embark on a traditional sampan gently rowed down the exquisite river through numerous caves: “Hang Toi” (Dark Cave), “Hang Sang” (Light Cave) and “Hang Nau Ruou” (Cave of Distillery). Every passage brings a new hidden inside isolated valleys of tranquility, which perhaps transformed to another world and time. The fauna and flora is rich, and a scene of a goat jumping from one cliff to the other is a common sight. It is the time for you to enjoy the sunset over the lime karsts while cruising on the clear water back to the main tourist boat terminal. The boat trip in Trang An is around 2.5 hours and through 9 to 11 caves like a circle.

Hoa Lu Citadel

Only an hour away from Ninh Binh City, Cuc Phuong is one of the oldest national parks in Vietnam. Cuc Phuong is known as the first national park in Vietnam, covering a broad area of 25,000 ha. Cuc Phuong is considered as a green lung of northern Vietnam and also a large natural museum with a dense forest of millennia-old trees, caves, botanical gardens, and two animal sanctuaries which are worth exploring. The Endangered Primate Rescue Centre rescue, rehabilitation, breeding, research and conservation of Vietnam’s endangered and critically endangered primate species. It must be a big regret if you do not taste the local signature specialties at Ninh Binh such as: “Com Chay” (Fried Rice Crust), and goat meat. “Com Chay” is made from cooked rice, then being soaked into hot oil pan until it turns yellow. Beef and pig’s heart and kidney are crushed into thin slices and mixed with spices and other ingredients. Then the mixture is well-fried and put into the bowl. This cuisine is very famous and it should come first in the list of dishes that you should try. Another famous cuisine that you should try is dishes made from goat such as fried goat meat, grilled goat meat, lemon rare goat, etc.

Even Ninh Binh is always warm or hot but beer here is always cold 😀 Local keep beers in ice and this is what I like the bests.

Good restaurants below are recommended for you to try those specialties with a price range from 10 USD per person

  • Trung Tuyet restaurant (14 Hoang Hoa Tham Street, Ninh Binh).
  • Minh Toan restaurant Father cooking (Tam Coc Village, Van Lam Commune, Ninh Binh District).
  • Bao Anh Restaurant (15 Hoang Hoa Tham Street, Ninh Binh).

  • Make sure to pack a snack and bring some water on your boat tour — each one lasts two to three hours and when climbing, tracking to avoid yourself from dehydrating.
  • Remember to bring some pence when coming to pagodas and donating. Visitors should avoid putting money on Buddha statues. This behavior can damage the beauty of the pagoda area. Instead, tourists had better donate money into donation boxes.
  • Finally, don’t forget to bring a fully charged camera to take various memorable pictures at Ninh Binh.

*Recommend one-day-tour options for travelers

Of course, you could not visit all of these spots in a day. So for a  day trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, we recommend you some options as below:

  • Hoa Lu & Tam Coc with Hang Mua and Thai Vi Temple included.
  • Bai Dinh Pagoda & Trang An Complex.
  • Hoa Lu & Tam Coc with a biking to Thai Vi Temple or Bich Dong Pagoda.
  • Hoa Lu Ancient Capital & Trang An Complex.
  • Biking Ninh Binh: From Hoa Lu to Tam Coc.
  • Tam Coc & Cuc Phuong National Park.

Ninh Binh Vietnam: The Incredible Day Trip You MUST Take from Hanoi

Day Trip to Ninh Binh Vietnam

If there is ONE day trip you take from Hanoi, make sure it is to the serene Vietnamese countryside to an area called Ninh Binh . It was such a nice escape from the insanely hectic city of Hanoi and it ended up being my favorite place in all of Vietnam!

It’s an easy stress-free day trip from Hanoi and is 100% worth doing, especially if you love nature, mountains, and epic panoramic views. Here is a quick guide on how to do an easy day trip to Ninh Binh, Vietnam.

How to Get to Ninh Binh from Hanoi

Hanoi to Ninh Binh:

The earliest train to Ninh Binh leaves at 6 am and takes about 2 hours.

Ninh Binh to Hanoi

The last train leaves Ninh Binh at 5:27pm and takes 2 hours to get back to Hanoi.

The cost of the round-trip train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is 216,000 dong ($9.50 ). To get your ticket, go to the tourist info center in the train station. You will see someone behind a desk and you sit on a chair and wait for them to process your ticket. I waited 10-15 minutes and they wrote me a paper ticket. You must bring your passport to purchase a ticket (a photo of your passport works too).

Note: I went the day before to get my ticket because I wasn’t sure what time they opened and I didn’t want to miss the first train. I’m glad I did because they were very slow in processing the ticket! Apparently you can book on the official site of Vietnam Railways but when I checked the online prices were way higher than the in-person prices.

There is also a bus that runs from Hanoi to Ninh Binh and takes about 2.5 hours. The cost is around $7. But honestly, when it comes to public transportation in Southeast (SE) Asia, I would definitely trust the train over the bus as bus safety is a big issue in a lot of SE Asian countries.

What to Do In Ninh Binh Vietnam

Hang mua (mua caves).

Hang Mua is the crown jewel of Ninh Binh in my opinion. I went here first because I wanted to beat the crowds and the heat. I went right when they opened and was the first person there so I had it to myself for a bit which was really nice.

Ninh Binh Vietnam

You must climb almost 500 steps to reach the top of the Hang Mua Peak and the views from the top will blow your mind! The entrance fee is 100,000 dong ($4), cash only!

Ninh Binh Vietnam

At the top of what the locals call, “dragon mountain” is a HUGE carved out dragon that is said to be watching over the valley.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BhzPEVTBrE7/

On the other side you will have a sweeping panoramic view over the Tam Coc Valley, and the BEST view I saw in all of Vietnam.

Ninh Binh Vietnam

Tam Coc Boat Tour

You can take a quick taxi from Hang Mua to Tam Coc for 50,000 dong ($2). Tam Coc is part of the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex which is a UNESCO World Heritage site .

The Tam Coc Boat tour costs 270,000 ($12) dong per boat (2 ppl max). The trip is 1.5 hrs long and goes through the gorgeous valley, passing under some caves and past some rice fields. You also randomly stop to feed some hangry goats, which was fun!

Ninh Binh Vietnam

The fun thing about this boat trip is that one of the locals pedals the oars with their feet for the entire ride. They work really hard so make sure to give them a good tip at the end!

Rent a Bike in the Tam Coc Valley

One of my favorite things I did in Ninh Binh was rent a bike and wind through the gorgeous rice fields with the river on one side and the mountains on the other. There were many different paths to take and I had such a blast exploring the peaceful countryside.

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

You can rent a bike from across the street from the Tam Coc Boat tours at one of the shops for 50,000 dong ($2).

Get a Famous Vietnamese Egg Coffee

Brick coffee shop was only a 5 minute bike ride away from the boats. It had the most amazing egg coffee and was a super cute/trendy coffee shop. This was a great way to end my day trip in Ninh Binh before returning my bike and heading back to the train station.

Taxis in Ninh Binh Vietnam

I took taxis the whole time I was in Ninh Binh and it was super cheap and convenient. The taxi from Ninh Binh train station to Mua caves cost 100,000 dong ($4). The taxi from Mua caves to Tam Coc cost 50,000 dong ($2). The taxi from Tam Coc back to the train station cost 100,000 ($4). So in total it costs 250,000 for the entire day of taxis ( $10 ).

The Grab app is like the local version of Uber. But you can see messages through the app, good for when you have WiFi but not a local phone number to call. You can also add a quick note to the driver when you book (ex: I’m right outside the train station). You pay them in cash. You can set up to pay by card but you have to buy credits in increments of 100,000 dong so if you don’t use them all you waste money.

  • A perfect day in Ninh Binh

All photography by Christian Berg

Just two hours from Hanoi, Ninh Binh , is one of Vietnam’s most striking destinations. Breathtaking boat rides and lush countryside are just half of the appeal: the area is also rich in cultural treasures and is listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site. See the highlights of Ninh Binh with this itinerary in a single adventurous day.

See ancient history in hoa lư.

Hoa Lu Ninh Binh

Your first introduction to Ninh Binh is the historic site of Hoa Lư. These grounds were the seat of Vietnam’s first feudal dynasty and saw an assassination plot, two reigns and a transfer to Hanoi 42 years later. Today Hoa Lư is surrounded by limestone karsts and natural moats.

Take a few minutes to wander around this centuries-old site, and admire its temples, pagodas, and artefacts. Your guides will fill you in on the fascinating details of Hoa Lư’s history and offer tidbits about local life in the area.

Drift with the current in Tràng An

Your next stop is the Tràng An Scenic Landscape Complex. Clamber aboard a rowboat and settle in for a stunning ride. With impressive, jungle-covered karsts towering above, listen in as your guide shares stories about the people that lived in these mountains in prehistoric times, as well as those who still farm the area.

You’ll need to duck down in parts as the boat glides beneath cool, dark grottoes. Along the way, you’ll encounter tranquil pagodas on the river banks, and a set from the film ‘Kong: Skull Island’, which you can explore on foot.

Indulge with a local lunch

Once you emerge from Tràng An, hop into the van for a quick ride to lunch near Tam Cốc. Lunch may be an array of local specialities, including a Ninh Binh favourite: goat meatballs. Take in the lovely scenery all around as you enjoy an authentic Vietnamese meal, complete with fish cakes on lemongrass skewers, stir-fried greens and steamed rice.

Learn about Bích Động  Pagoda

Bich Dong pagoda Ninh Binh

Newly energized, it’s time to continue your Ninh Binh adventure at the 15th-century Bích Động Pagoda. A small, photogenic path between lotus ponds leads you to the first gate of the pagoda. From here, you’ll need to hike up the stairs along the mountainside to reach the top tier of the pagoda. Your guide will fill you on the history of the pagoda, as you soak up the peaceful atmosphere. You may like to leave a coin from your home country as a token offering before descending.

Soak up panoramic views at Hang Múa

There’s one more stop on your Ninh Binh itinerary: Hang Múa Peak. It’s 500 steps up, but the steep hike is worth the effort. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping panoramas of Tam Cốc valley below, with the faint outlines of karsts stretching toward the horizon. After taking pictures, wander around and you’ll find statues of Vietnam’s four sacred animals. Back at the base of the mountain, treat yourself to an ice-cream in Hang Múa cave.

The Allure of Ninh Binh: Why You Should Visit

If you’re the kind who enjoys the charm of the outdoors and history intertwined, you’re in for a real treat.

What’s more, this place is also known as ‘Halong Bay on land’ because of its surreal landscape. But let me tell you, Ninh Binh has its unique charm that distinguishes it from its marine counterpart.

With less crowd and a peaceful atmosphere, it offers a more authentic, raw Vietnamese experience.

Geography: Hanoi and Ninh Binh

Hanoi, the lively capital of Vietnam, is a metropolitan hub bustling with energy and filled to the brim with rich cultural experiences. This city never sleeps, and every corner of Hanoi tells a different story.

On the flip side, about 100 km to the southeast of Hanoi , lies Ninh Binh, an enchanting rural idyll that’s as tranquil as Hanoi is boisterous. The serene paddy fields and stunning limestone mountain ranges are the perfect getaway from the bustling city life.

Traveling Duration: Hanoi to Ninh Binh

The duration largely depends on the mode of transportation you choose. Generally, it’s a fairly short journey that can take anywhere between 2 to 3 hours .

Yes, it’s that close, making it perfect for even a day trip! But trust me when I say, Ninh Binh is worth spending more than just a day.

Remember, it’s not just about the destination, it’s about the journey too! And this journey, from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, is truly a remarkable one that you’re going to cherish for a lifetime.

5 Travel Options From Hanoi To Ninh Binh

Let’s dive into the different modes of transportation you can consider for your trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

1. Train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Hanoi to Ninh Binh train

Train is one of the most popular modes of transport. It takes about 2 to 3 hours, offering you beautiful vistas of the Vietnamese countryside. Remember, trains usually run on time, so make sure you reach the station a little early.

I’d suggest booking your tickets from 12go.asia a few days in advance. An online booking system is your best bet to get the choicest tickets.

Plus, you skip the queue at the station – more time to plan your trip or just chill! Remember, during weekends and holidays, demand soars. So the earlier you book, the better.

How much does it cost?

If you’re on a budget, basic passenger trains with non-air-conditioned and hard seats are cheaper. But if you fancy a bit of luxury, air-conditioned trains with soft seats and sufficient legroom are available at a higher price. It costs around USD 10 to 15 .

And the best part? Trains are the most affordable option, considering the distance traveled. Plus, your ticket usually includes 2 to 3 bags per passenger. So you don’t have to worry about leaving anything behind!

2. Bus from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Hanoi to Ninh Binh Bus

Jumping aboard a public bus for your trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is an option. The journey typically lasts between 2 to 3 hours and costs around USD 5 to 20. However, keep in mind that this cost does not cover cab fares you might incur.

There are several bus stations in Hanoi, each serving different towns and cities in Northern Vietnam. If you’re set on taking a public bus to Ninh Binh, head over to the Giap Bat Bus Station located towards the south of Hanoi.

You can catch a bus to Ninh Binh every hour from this station. It’s always best to get your tickets directly at the booking counter and not to fall for any hawker offering “better prices” or “time-saving” deals.

While public buses are available, I don’t really recommend this option due to a number of downsides:

  • First off, reaching the Giap Bat Bus Station from the old quarter in Hanoi can take more than 30 minutes, and sometimes up to an hour, owing to heavy traffic.
  • You’re likely to end up taking a taxi to the bus station , adding to your overall travel cost.
  • Moreover, these buses make numerous stops throughout the Ninh Binh province before finally stopping at the Ninh Binh bus station. Make sure you’re booking one that stops in Ninh Binh city (Thanh Pho Ninh Binh) as this is probably closer to where you’ll be staying, in Tam Coc. Expect to shell out an additional dollar or two to reach there.
  • Lastly, after 5:30 PM every day, direct public bus services to Ninh Binh are scarce, meaning an overnight journey with these buses is off the table.

Given these factors, it’s worth considering other modes of transportation for your journey from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

Round-Trip Bus Schedule: Hanoi to Ninh Binh and Back

3. taxi from hanoi to ninh binh.

👉If comfort and convenience are your top priorities, booking a private taxi might be your best bet. The journey will take approximately 2 hours . It’s pricier, sure, but you get the freedom to stop at will for those impromptu photo sessions!

👉Distance between the two places can vary significantly depending on the route chosen by your driver . Often, these taxi drivers are locals who have an uncanny knowledge of backstreets and shortcuts that even Google Maps might not suggest.

👉Skilled drivers may sometimes take a longer path, but they strategically bypass traffic, road constructions, and other potential delays. This expertise usually results in the quickest travel time from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

👉As for how long it’ll take to get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh by taxi , it largely depends on traffic conditions . Taxis hold the edge in city travel since, unlike city buses that stick to fixed routes, taxis can pick you up and drop you off wherever there’s a drivable path.

👉The expertise of the driver also plays a role. Those in the know about the local terrain might use backstreets and shortcuts that aren’t typically featured on Google Maps, potentially reducing your travel time.

👉The cost of traveling from Hanoi to Ninh Binh by taxi can be based on a flat fare or a metered fare. Flat fares might be more costly , but you don’t have to buy a ticket for each passenger like you would on buses or trains.

👉If you’re a group of four or fewer, you can share a car – the fare is calculated per car, not per passenger. That makes taxis a budget-friendly choice for small groups. It costs around $52 for two people.

👉If a taxi company offers larger vehicles like SUVs , consider taking that option. While it might be slightly more expensive, it can accommodate at least six passengers and provide enough room for your luggage . This becomes even more cost-effective for larger groups or families.

👉Some companies also offer larger vehicles for bigger groups or travelers with oversized luggage. But perhaps the biggest perk of taxi travel is the flexibility . You can ask the driver to make pit stops at stores, supermarkets, or even take a short detour for some photo ops while on your journey from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

👉Taxi costs around USD 45 to 100 from 12go.asia .

4. Motorbike from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

For those with a streak of adventure, why not drive down on a motorbike? It’s about 3- to 4-hour ride , but the thrill of driving through the open roads, wind in your hair, is unmatched! Just make sure you’re comfortable with Vietnamese traffic rules.

If you’re an adrenaline junkie, consider taking a motorbike from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. Google Maps should be more than adequate to guide you across the 100+ km journey. Along the way, you can make pit stops at places like the Perfume Pagoda, taking in the local sights and experiences.

Just a heads up before you rev that engine – countryside roads can be a bit rough, with potholes and barely visible rubble or speed bumps. Also, the driving style of locals might take you by surprise if you’re not accustomed to Southeast Asia or Asian traffic in general.

So, the golden rule is, take it slow. Safety first, always. Don a solid, protective helmet and ensure your travel insurance covers any potential mishaps. So, saddle up and enjoy this unforgettable motorbike adventure from Hanoi to Ninh Binh.

5. Private Mini-van from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

ninh binh day trip from hanoi reddit

Traveling in a group? Consider a private mini-van. It’s comfy, convenient, and fun when you have company. The journey would take around 2 to 3 hours .

Opting for a van from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is a practical choice. Vans are usually faster than buses and offer numerous departure times to suit your schedule. Each van can hold about 12 to 15 passengers .

However, one thing to keep in mind is the limited space for luggage . Your bags may need to be stored under your seat or in the aisle, making it less ideal for those traveling with a lot of luggage. If you’re bringing big suitcases, consider purchasing an additional seat for them or choosing a bus instead.

The distance from Hanoi to Ninh Binh by van is similar to that of buses. The exact driving distance varies as some vans may not take the shortest route and may make detours to pick up or drop off passengers along the way. This can lead to longer travel times.

When it comes to van services , some companies operate on a fixed schedule, while others only depart when the van is full. Therefore, selecting a company that operates on a scheduled basis is a safer bet.

The fare for the journey from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is typically calculated upfront, covering the cost of tolls, gas, and other overheads. This fare is usually set per van, not per passenger, making it a cost-effective option for larger groups. It’s essential to read the fine print and clarify any uncertainties upfront.

The van costs around $16 per person and $45 for a group of four .

Here are some advantages of traveling by van:

👍 Comfort and Convenience: Vans offer extra room and comfort, making your journey more pleasant.

👍 Cost-Effective: Especially for larger groups, as the fare is charged per van and not per passenger.

👍 Flexibility: Like a taxi, you can request the driver to stop at stores, supermarkets, or landmarks along the way.

Keep in mind to check the timetable for van services between Hanoi and Ninh Binh to plan your journey efficiently.

Choosing Your Mode of Transportation

Hanoi to Ninh Binh view

Day Trip: Is it feasible?

Well, it’s absolutely possible! Given the proximity between the two places, a lot of travelers opt for this.

On the plus side, a day trip is quick and fits perfectly if you’re running on a tight schedule. You can take an early train or bus, explore some major attractions, and be back in Hanoi by nightfall.

However, Ninh Binh is not just a place; it’s an experience. Rushing through might mean missing out on some gems.

You might not be able to soak in the tranquility or appreciate the beauty as much as you’d want to in a hurry. It’s like tasting a dish without relishing the flavors.

15 Best Day Trips from Hanoi

Hanoi is the ancient capital of Vietnam. It’s a city that can trace its long lineage back thousands of years; a city that has seen many different people and cultures come and go and leave their marks on the land through the ages.

From the Chinese to the French, there are influences in the food, architecture, and language of Hanoi from across the world.

In recent years, the northern Vietnamese city has slowly begun to open itself up to tourism, as the locals shrug off repression and open their doors.

It’s an interesting city to visit, and Hanoi’s prime location and position as the capital makes it an excellent place from which to explore the rest of the north of the country.

The iconic Halong Bay, with its floating villages and towering limestone karst rocks, is found on the nearby coastline, while ancient temples and traditional villages can be found across the spectacular, verdant countryside.

There are plenty of day trip opportunities from Hanoi, and here are the best of them.

1. Halong Bay

Halong Bay, Vietnam

A trip to Halong Bay is top of any travelers list when visiting the north of Vietnam.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most world-renowned natural wonders in Southeast Asia – to miss seeing it in person would be a travesty.

Yes, it can be busy and touristy, but this attraction far exceeds its reputation and will leave you reeling from shock when you see the beauty.

Tall, limestone karsts are arrayed across the water for miles and there are many hidden caves and coves waiting to be explored.

There are almost 2000 individual islands in the area – it would be impossible to explore every single one.

The best way to see Halong Bay on a day trip, is, of course, to take a cruise through the spectacular scenery.

Recommended tour : Halong Day Tour: Islands, Caves, Kayak with Dragonfly Cruise

2. Haiphong

Haiphong, Vietnam

Haiphong is a sprawling, industrial city on the coast, used by some as a gateway to Halong Bay but not truly really visited by many for long.

Give the city a chance though – look past the urban, steely gaze and explore the unique, French styled, colonial architecture that’s found in the old center and the hidden but surprisingly green, tree-filled parks.

There is an intriguing museum where you can learn more about this overlooked Vietnamese city, while you can visit the Du Hang Pagoda to see more of the Buddhist influence too.

3. Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba is the largest of the many islands off the coast of Vietnam.

It’s found at the southern edge of Halong Bay; from the seafront, you see the thousands of other islands sprawled across the horizon.

As well as being an entrance point to the famous bay, it’s also an interesting destination in its own right, offering visitors a vast, green national park to explore.

The scenery here is wild and untouched, and the island is only sparsely populated, meaning there is a lot of that wild scenery to go around.

Explore the national park and make sure to visit the intriguing Cave Hospital, which was hidden away in the forests and used during the Vietnam War.

Available 2 day cruise : Mon Chéri Cruise 5 Star: Unique 2 Days Halong Bay & Cat Ba

4. Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh

As far as northern Vietnamese cities go, Ninh Binh is very much an unknown and unexplored destination.

Found just 100 kilometers to the south of Hanoi, it makes for an excellent, off the beaten track day trip.

Ninh Binh can’t remain hidden for long though, because it is utterly spectacular.

The area is a maze of rivers and waterways, as this is the Red River Delta.

There are beautifully green rice paddies and grazing pastures, while the Phat Diem Cathedral is an iconic piece of Christian history to be seen.

Hoa Lu, Vietnam

Hoa Lu is one of Vietnam’s historical capital cities, an ancient place that was once the center of life and politics during the middle ages.

Although it was superseded by Hanoi, it remains an important tourist destination.

It’s found close to Ninh Binh – but certainly worth a day trip by itself – and is in a beautiful location, surrounded by rivers and high limestone rocks.

The setting is as dramatic as it gets anywhere in Vietnam, but add to this the culture and immense history of Hoa Lu and you have one of the best sights in the country to see.

6. Trang An

Trang An, Ninh Binh

Trang An is one of the most incredible areas in the Ninh Binh district.

It’s not far from Hanoi, so this area of immense natural beauty is fast becoming a popular trip for those looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in greenery rather than concrete.

There is a vast network of rivers and deltas to explore, but the highlight is taking a boat to an enormous cave complex that’s hidden away in the mountains.

Available tour : Full-Day Trang An, Hoa Lu, Mua Cave – Group Tour with Lunch

7. Van Long

Van Long Nature Reserve

Van Long Nature Reserve is also found near Ninh Binh, and this scenic area of protected wilderness tends to be much quieter than the other points of interest in the region.

It’s the best place south of Hanoi to simply lose yourself in the vast beauty of Vietnam.

This is a haven for unique animals and wildlife too, and it’s becoming a favorite for bird watchers looking to spot many of the rare species found here, living along the river and amongst the limestone karsts that create such a domineering landscape.

8. Cuc Phuong

Cuc Phuong Jungle Path

Cuc Phuong National Park is located to the south of Hanoi and it’s the largest national park in Vietnam.

It’s a huge area of protected land and offers visitors some of the best outdoor experiences in the country.

The scenery is magnificent, and there are many hikes through the park which allow you to enjoy that scenery at its best.

There’s also a fascinating primate rescue center to visit, where you can find out more about the rare and, in many cases, endangered species of monkey that are found in the wild here.

Ba Vi, Vietnam

Ba Vi is a national park that’s found just 60 kilometers to the west of Hanoi’s city center.

It makes for an excellent outdoor day trip from the capital and is known for the many temples that are found in the forests here – some sit in striking position atop the various hills in the area.

There are waterfalls – even a water park nearby – and plenty of hikes to undertake amongst the beautiful scenery.

10. Mai Chau Valley

Mai Chau Valley

The Mai Chau Valley is the quintessential picture of Vietnam.

This breathtaking, green valley is exactly what you will imagine if you picture the Vietnamese countryside.

In fact, if you see a picture of the Vietnamese countryside, it might well be of the valley.

Extensive rice fields are surrounded by high hills and mountains, and life in the valley has changed little in hundreds of years.

It’s a refreshing escape from Hanoi, to the south-west of the city.

You can easily visit in a day, but many travelers will find themselves staying in this peaceful valley for much longer.

Suggested tour : 2-Day Mai Chau Valley Tour from Hanoi: Homestay, Bike & Trek

11. Perfume Pagoda

Perfume Pagoda, Hanoi

The Huong Pagoda, otherwise known as the Perfume Pagoda to tourists, is the centerpiece of a dramatic complex of temples and pagodas that are found in the spectacular mountains of Huong Tich, a place of limestone rocks and endless caves.

The Perfume Pagoda is incredibly popular with tourists, of course, because it’s close to Hanoi and is absolutely stunning.

But it’s also incredibly popular with Buddhist pilgrims; any day of the week you can expect the gates and steps to the temples to be very busy.

Get here as early as you can to enjoy any serenity.

Available tour : Full-Day Perfume Pagoda Small-Group Tour

12. Tam Dao Hill Station

Tam Dao Hill Station

Found in the cool hills to the north of Hanoi, the Tam Dao Hill Station makes for a spectacular – and at times cold – escape from Hanoi.

The hill station was originally built by the French, as the Europeans wanted to escape the heat of Hanoi in summer.

Now, it’s still used as a hilltop resort, but the French architecture is gone.

Views of the surrounding area are wonderful and there are many hiking opportunities to be had amongst the hills.

13. Ho Citadel

Ho Citadel, Vietnam

The Ho Citadel is another of Vietnam’s historic UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The citadel was constructed in the 14th Century, by the Ho Dynasty, and for years it was the ruler’s base of power in Vietnam.

Today, the walls have crumbled and the citadel was abandoned long ago, but it’s still well preserved, unique and very interesting for those who have a love of local history.

It takes about three hours to reach the Ho Citadel from Hanoi, but you can pass through the beautiful Ninh Binh province on the way, to make the journey seem to fly past as you admire the wonderful countryside.

14. Van Phuc

Van Phuc Village, Vietnam

Van Phuc is just a few kilometers away from Hanoi, so this traditional Vietnamese village makes for an easy day trip from the city.

Van Phuc is the center of the ancient and very much refined craft of silk weaving.

Here, you can acquire some of the highest quality silk garments found anywhere in Asia, and of course, you can get them at a bargain price in comparison to many other countries.

15. Duong Lam

Duong Lam

Duong Lam is known as the Ancient Village because this is an incredibly traditional and cultural place, found along the banks of the Red River.

It’s an old place and can trace its origins back thousands of years.

There are many traditional pagodas and houses, and it’s an excellent demonstration of Vietnamese history and tradition.

Hanoi day trip: Solo in Ninh Binh without a group tour

By: Author Jaclynn Seah

Posted on June 5, 2024

Categories Vietnam

Ninh Binh is one of the more popular Hanoi day trips you can take if you want to explore outside of the city and enjoy a bit of Vietnam ‘s scenic mountain views. While there are many group day tours that will take you to Ninh Binh, I experimented visiting on my own this trip and put together this guide to visiting Ninh Binh solo without a tour and what you can expect when planning your own trip.

Why visit Ninh Binh?

Ninh Binh is a town about 95km south of Hanoi city and most well known for its beautiful natural scenery. Often referred to as ‘ Ha Long Bay on land’, it’s also home to UNESCO heritage sites and was Vietnam’s very first capital dating back to the 10th century, the perfect place for a little bit of history, culture and scenery all in one.

While you can take a day trip to Ninh Binh from Hanoi like I did, I think it would be nice to spend a night or two in this little town to really take things slow and enjoy the small town vibe fully. You’ll also be able to better enjoy the sights after the day trip tourists have gone for the day.

How to get to Ninh Binh from Hanoi

The major upside about taking an organised day trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is not having to worry about the public transport options. While Vietnam’s public transport isn’t too expensive, it’s also not the easiest to navigate if you don’t speak/read Vietnamese. I suggest enlisting the help of your hotel/concierge if you need to, or fork out a little more for English services.

My guesthouse was very helpful in organising all this for me – WeCozy Guesthouse [ booking.com affiliate link ] is located right next to the Hanoi Railway line near the Old Quarter. It’s like a service apartment and you get a great bird’s eye view of the railway cafe area as you live right above it, but it can be a bit noisy if you are sensitive to that.

Their counter staff were pretty young folk and spoke good English and were able to help me arrange the limousine service to Ninh Binh as well as the bike hire.

Hanoi Wecozy View Tracks Train Night

By private limousine

Ninh Binh is about 1.5 hours away from Hanoi by road, so driving from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is the fastest way to get there. The thing about the main bus/train stations in both Hanoi and Ninh Binh is that they are not located where the tourist attractions are, so you will still need to figure out how to get there even if you hop on a public bus or train.

What my hostel suggested is a private limousine service – a limousine in this case refers to the smaller vans with aircon and plush seats that seat about 10pax in total, instead of taking a typical tourist coach. These smaller vans are faster and more comfortable overall.

Ninh Binh Khanh An Limousine Car

The limousine services even provide additional connection services, where they drop off all guests at the main company stop, and then split into separate limousine vans that drop you at a specific location. My guesthouse arranged for me to be dropped off and picked up at the scooter rental company.

The pickup point in Hanoi was located at Thong Nhat Park [ Google maps ]. Again I think it was a good thing to go through my guesthouse because they kept in touch with me via whatsapp and gave me English instructions on what to do. There was some issue with my GrabBike bringing me to the wrong park entrance, so the guesthouse arranged for another GrabBike to take me to an alternative pick up point instead. Pretty sure I would have been quite lost if I had to deal with this on my own.

My guesthouse booked Khánh An Limousine on my behalf and it cost me 530,000 VND which is about S$28 for a round trip from Hanoi Thong Nhat Park to Ninh Binh.

By private car transfer

Alternatively if you have a small group, you could book a private car transfer from Hanoi to Ninh Binh via Klook [ affiliate link ] that can take you to the various sights you want to see as well. Here’s another company that offers a similar car transfer from Hanoi to Ninh Binh on Klook [ affiliate link ] .

It might be a bit pricey if you are going solo as the cheapest rate was about $113 for a same day return trip by car. With the max small group of 3 pax, that works out to about $38 per pax – might be worth paying just a bit more for the personalised door-to-door service and getting around Ninh Binh if you don’t want to rent a bike!

One other option I was exploring would be to take the train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh which would take about 2 hours. You will need to either rent a scooter from around Ninh Binh Train Station or find your way to the tourist areas from there.

You could pop down to Hanoi Ga train station to book a ticket though you might have to contend with language barriers, or use a 3rd party service like EasyBook to reserve a train ticket – I’ve used them for booking ferries/buses in Malaysia previously.

Riding a scooter in Ninh Binh

Getting around Ninh Binh as a solo traveller was a key thing I needed to sort out, and one thing I learned from the various Vietnamese tour guides I had in Hanoi was that it seemed pretty easy to rent and drive a scooter around Ninh Binh.

Now a caveat: I would NEVER try riding a scooter in Hanoi or a major city because it really is the epitome of chaos, but Ninh Binh’s traffic situation reminds me of Yilan (in Taiwan) which are generally much quieter overall. I only ventured into the city area to return my bike and even that wasn’t too busy.

I rented my scooter from a small shop that my guesthouse recommended for me, details below.

For those who don’t want to ride, cycling is another very popular way to get around Ninh Binh. Your best bet is to take a taxi to one of the major tourist areas and rent a bicycle from one of the shops/guesthouses around there.

Cho thuê xe máy Ninh Bình Hương Dương [Google maps]. It cost me 150,000 VND (S$8) for a day rental. I topped up a full tank of petrol just in case (55,000 VND or S$3) but I really didn’t use that much at all.

1-day itinerary in Ninh Binh

So here’s what I ended up doing: I took an early morning private bus to Ninh Binh and picked up my bike at about 8am. I needed to return to the bike shop by about 430pm for my pick up and return trip to Hanoi. Here’s what I did in that time.

Hang Múa / Mua Cave – climb up for spectacular views

I opted to head over to Mua Cave first to hopefully beat the tourist crowds at this scenic hotspot. Despite the name Mua Cave, the highlight here is actually the hillside climb up the mountain side to enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of Ninh Binh below rather than the actual cave which is pretty pedestrian.

Ninh Binh Hang Mua Peak View Me

You’ll walk pass a few restaurants and photo spots as you enter as well as the Hang Mua Ecolodge [ booking.com affiliate links ] is located at the entrance – there are actually a few accommodation options here if you want to enjoy the area after the crowds have left, like Scenic Mountain Ecolodge Ninh Binh .

You’ll want to walk towards the back of the park where the steep stone staircases lead up to 2 viewing points on the Núi Ngoạ Long or Lying Dragon Mountain that overlook the area. The steps are uneven and pretty steep at points, and there are no hand railings most of the way, so be careful when you climb.

Ninh Binh Hang Mua Entrance

I climbed up the stair leading to the big pagoda where there is a large stone dragon statue on top. You can climb up on top of the dragon, but there are no railings here either and the rocks there are pretty sharp so definitely be very careful not to hurt yourself or fall off.

Ninh Binh Hang Mua Dragon Me

I decided to skip the small pagoda area as it involved another stair climb (pretty pooped by that point) and it looked slightly lower, but I did pop by the actual Mua cave itself which is more of an overhang and not particularly interesting.

Ninh Binh Hang Mua Cave Entrance

It might be worth coming back here in June during lotus blooming season as there is a lovely large lotus lake with a boardwalk here.

Ninh Binh Hang Mua Lotus Pond Path

Mua Cave / Hang Múa [ Google map ]. Open 7am – 7pm. Entrance fee – 100,000 VND (S$5)

Tràng An – cruise through karst pillars

One of the must-dos in Ninh Binh is take a ride on a traditional boat through its waterways dotted with limestone karsts. There are two places you can typically do this in Ninh Binh: Tam Coc is one popular option where you will also be surrounded by paddy fields, but since I was there after the rice harvest season, I opted for the UNESCO world heritage site Tràng An instead, often described as Ha Long Bay on land.

Ninh Binh Trang An Boat Start

Maybe because Trang An is very well visited and UNESCO rated, so its facilities were all top notch for tourists – even the more remote islands that we stopped over at had decent toilets. Some may argue this isn’t as ‘authentic’, but I was impressed that overall it was quite well taken care off and a smooth journey.

Ninh Binh Trang An Ticket Counter

After buying my boat ticket at the entrance, I followed the pathway that went through a tunnel that led to the river side. The river was lined many little wooden boats manned by a local (I spotted more women than men) with wooden paddles and can usually take up to 4 adults, though I did see some boats with 5-6 pax as some are children. Because I was solo, I joined a boat with a group of 3 Germans.

Ninh Binh Trang An Start Pier Boats

You can choose from 3 routes that will take you to different spots along the way. I wasn’t too fussed about which one I did so I ended up doing Route 3 – while it looks like it has the least stops, it turned out to have the longest cave route. You choose the boat route at the beginning of the tour when you are queuing for the boats and you can’t change your mind halfway through.

Ninh Binh Trang An Routes Map

Here’s what I saw on Trang An’s Route 3:

Đền Trình / Trinh Temple

This temple is apparently over a thousand years old and dedicated to four generals in the Dinh Dynasty. Love the giant carp sculptures in the front (there are a ton of fish in the water too) – it’s the first stop for both Route 1 and Route 3.

Ninh Binh Trang An Trinh Temple Pier Water

Hang Đột / Dot Cave

Hang Dot is a pretty long cave system that your boat master will expertly paddle you through. Keep your head down and you’ll need to duck down in places! The caves are lit so it won’t be pitch dark. After Hang Dot, you’ll transition to another cave which is a lot shorter called Hang Van (Cloud Cave) before the 2nd stop of the boat tour.

Ninh Binh Trang An Hang Dot Entrance Boat

Đền Suối Tiên / Suoi Tien Temple

Our next stop was Suoi Tien Temple which is dedicated to a saint credited with protecting the ancient capital or what we know as Hoa Lu today. We alighted from the boat and walked a short distance to check out the temple which is surrounded by tree-covered mountains all around. There’s a cute little jetty that extends from the shore that’s a perfect photo spot.

Ninh Binh Trang An Suoi Tien Sign

Hành Cung Vũ Lâm / Vu Lam Palace

This beautiful palace deep within the Trang An area was established by the Tran Dynasty that was also a military base. We stopped over here and popped into the temple, but the popular thing to do here is to take a shot with the floating pavilion on the water.

Ninh Binh Trang An Vu Lam Temple

Trang An boat tips

Take note of the number on your boat as well as your boat captain, or at least make sure your fellow boat mates know which is their boat so you don’t board the wrong one. I suggest wearing a hat because you’ll be pretty exposed on the boat, and thin long sleeves and long pants should stop you from getting any sunburns or weird tan lines, and will allow you to be properly dressed to enter the temples as well.

Tràng An [ Google map ]. Open 7am – 5pm. Boat fee – 250,000 VND (S$13)

Where to eat at Trang An: Nhà hàng Xuân Thắng

I popped by Nhà hàng Xuân Thắng for lunch right outside of the Trang An entrance. I was there around 2pm+ – weird timing for a meal so it was just me in this restaurant, and it’s a decent basic little eatery very conveniently located on the way in/out of Trang An.

Ninh Binh Restaurant Xuan Thang Exterior

Nhà hàng Xuân Thắng [ Google map ]. Open 6am – 10pm.

Hoa Lư – Vietnam’s ancient capital

My last stop on this trip to Ninh Binh was to Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s capital in the 10th and 11th centuries before it was shifted to Hanoi, so it has lots of historical buildings and sights to see. I was a little tired by this time so I definitely. got a bit lazy exploring this area compared to the other spots.

Ninh Binh Hoa Lu Main Gate

You can rent a bicycle to cycle in or around this area. It doesn’t look like you’re allowed to ride in on scooter though I saw some locals doing so, but it’s easy enough to just park your scooter outside and stroll in. Don’t really think there’s a need to cycle here unless you plan to explore further afield.

Hoa Lư [ Google map ]. Open 7am – 5pm. Admission fee – 20,000 VND

Đền thờ Vua Đinh Tiên Hoàng / Temple of Dinh Tien Hoang

There are 2 temples within walking distance of the main entrance to Hoa Lu. The first is dedicated to Đinh Bộ Lĩnh, the first emperor of the Dinh dynasty and established Đại Cồ Việt, Vietnam’s first independent dynasty way back in the year 968. Apparently the interior is shaped like the Chinese word for King 王 with 3 ‘layers’ of courtyards to enter, with the temple right at the far end.

Ninh Binh Hoa Lu Dinh Ten Hoang Temple

Next to Dinh Tien Hoang Temple is the Đền thờ Vua Lê Đại Hành or King Le Temple – King Le was Lê Hoàn, whose Le dynasty succeeded the Dinhs in 981. There was a museum of sorts located around the back of this temple which showed some archaeological digs of the site that I thought were a bit more interesting than the actual temple – everything was starting to look very similar at this point.

Ninh Binh Hoa Lu Archaelogical Site

After Hoa Lu, I decided to call it a day and ride back to drop off my scooter and wait for my limousine pick up at about 430pm. The limo dropped me off back at the park at around 630pm and I called for a Grab Bike so I could get some Hanoi street food for dinner.

Book Ninh Binh day trip tours from Hanoi

If all this just convinces you that doing your own day trip is too much work (especially if you’re solo) or you want someone who can tell you more information about the places that you are seeing, consider booking one of Klook’s many Ninh Binh day trips and save yourself the hassle of figuring out your the logistics.

[ Klook affiliate links below ]

  • This Ninh Binh day tour covers the three places that I went to but in reverse order: Hoa Lu, Trang An and Hang Mua
  • This company’s tours have the same reverse order tour available as well as many options that replace Trang An with Tam Coc, and Hoa Lu with Bai Dinh.

Make sure to take a close look at the itinerary you book to ensure you get exactly what you want. There are many different tour stop options – usually you have to pick between Tam Coc and Trang An, and Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh. There are also different group sizes (some are large groups, some small groups, some private) as well as guides that speak different languages available.
