13 Best Places to Fly Fish in New York: MAPS INCLUDED

Just mentioning the words New York induces stress in a large portion of the world’s population. Most people’s first thought is New York City and all of the overwhelming aspects of it. New York City, however, only takes up about one percent of the entire state.

Brown Trout Caught with a Hares Ear Nymph

That leaves almost 54,000 square miles of the New York to explore. In these 54,000 square miles one can find the Adirondack, Catskill and Appalachian Mountains along with over 70,000 acres of water. You don’t ever have to visit the city to have a once in a lifetime experience in New York. The fisheries are world class and will keep you venturing back.

Here is a list of the top 13 places to fish in New York:

1. Salmon River

The salmon river is perhaps the most famous river in New York. The ease of access and amount of information available on it makes it appealing for anglers. The main fish targets are steelhead and salmon. Starting in late August, the King Salmon will begin their run. The run of these 20 pound fish lasts until late October. Coho Salmon will join this run for a few months as well.

Starting in late October, the Steelhead will start moving. They’ll be in the water from October until May. The brown trout will also be present during these short months. The Skamania (summer steelhead) will be present in the summer months, but it depends on the water levels.

Steelhead and salmon are going to sit in the slower moving sections of the river. Find the part of the water where the water slows and work it. Salmon strike out of aggression; they aren’t feeding. Steelhead, however, will be feeding!

Guide Pro Tip: Want the details for the Salmon River? Read 👉 Where to Fly Fish on the Salmon River (Maps, Flies and More)

Where to fish the Salmon River?

There are two fly fishing only areas on the Salmon River. The first is called the “Lower Fly Zone.” It starts at the Beaverdam Brook and flows downstream to the County 52 Bridge in Altmar. This zone is open from September 15 to May 15. It’s an ideal spot for salmon and steelhead. The “Upper Fly Zone” starts near the Light House Hill Reservoir and goes upstream to the Salmon River Fish Hatchery. This is open from April 1 to November 30.

Here is the Fish Hatchery. Go downstream from here to the Light House Hill Reservoir for the fly fishing only section of the river.

Recommended Gear for Fly Fishing on the Salmon River

First of all, the fly fishing only section of the river require that your leader is no longer than 15 feet and the gap in hooks can’t exceed a half inch.

As far as rods are concerned, a single handed between a 7 and 10 weight is sufficient. Be sure your reel matches your fly rod. Weight Forward floating line is going to be your best all around option. If possible, carry a sinking tip to allow you to swing streamers through the pools.

Woolly Bugger

Fly choices can be debated all day long. You’re likely targeting larger fish that like to sit in slower moving water. Therefore you want heavier flies that are large and create aggression. Find all of these flies in size 4-8:

  • The Eggstacy egg
  • Crystal Bugger
  • Egg Sucking Leech
  • Wooly Bugger

Guide Pro Tip: Be sure to get your license before casting a line. Learn more about the regulations in this article. 👉 How Much is a Fishing License in New York

2. Delaware River – the Best Fly Fishing River in the East?

The Delaware is similar in fame to the Salmon River. It’s widely considered the best trout stream in the Eastern United States. Stretching between New York and Pennsylvania, this river is full of wild trout. Most people break the Delaware into three sections. The first is the West Branch. It’s below the Cannonsville Reservoir. It’s about 20 miles long and consists of all the water a trout angler dreams about. It has riffles, pools and everything in between. The West Branch also is the most accessible of the three branches.

A beautiful brown trout fly fishing

The East Branch starts below the Pepacton Reservoir. The Beaverkill also flows into this section. Above the Beaverkill is going to be your best fishing. The water is cooler and more calm. Fish are going to hang out here more than the rest of the 32 miles.

The final section is the main stem. This is located in Hancock, New York. This is the hardest portion of the river to access. It’s 25 miles long with limited access along Pennsylvania Route #191. All three sections are great with a wide variety of water.

The Delaware is going to hold large Brown and Brook trout.

Guide Pro Tip: I’ve got a complete guide to the Delaware check it out 👉 Where to Fly Fish on the Delaware River

Where to Fly Fish on the Delaware:

Like mentioned above, access points are going to be your biggest challenge. Once on the river, you’re good to go. Here is a great map of the different access points on the Delaware. It gives parking spots and other information on this portion of the river.

If your looking for a great resource, check out this LINK . It takes you to multiple a downloadable maps from the State of New York.

Fly Fishing Gear to use on the Delaware:

This is a trout river so a 5 or 6 weight rod is perfect. Again, match the reel to your rod. Weight Forward Line is the best option. You’ll want to swing some streamers through the slower moving water. Use anywhere between a 9-12 foot leader.

Waders are necessary for the Delaware. You’ll see seams all over the river that you’ll want to hit, but the cold water can be uncomfortable to stand in without wader.

Favorite Flies for the Delaware:

BWO’s, Trico’s and March Brown’s are going to be your most popular. Anything size 10-16 is going to do what you need. Here is a hatch chart specifically for the Delaware. It tells you when the flies will hatch and the best size to use.

If you’d like to learn more about BWOs, read this article What is a BWO and When to Use One!

3. Beaverkill River – Fly Fishing History

The Beaverkill is a must visit for any history buff. Dry fly fishing developments and discoveries were made on the Beaverkill. As mentioned earlier, the Beaverkill is a tributary of the Delaware. It’s a Catskill stream that is full of wonderful trout water. Pools, riffles and runs can all be found on the 40 mile stream. There are also numerous tributaries off of the Beaverkill that hold fish.

Guide Tip: The Beaverkill is AWESOME! In fact I have an article dedicated to this river system. Read – Where to Fly fish on the Beaverkill River

The upper 25 miles of the Beaverkill is smaller stream fishing that requires quite a bit of technical ability. The rocks, overhanging trees and small pools can be frustrating for a beginner. As the river flows towards the Delaware, it becomes wider. All of the river holds brown and brook trout. The river is located near Roscoe, New York.

Where to Fish on the Beaverkill:

For being such a historic river, the access is not as difficult as many rivers in New York. The lower section is going to have more public access.

There is access at the Beaverkill Campground:

Again, here is another map (LINK to Downloadable PDF) from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. It explains the rules and regulations for traveling along the river. It’s a wonderful resource.

What Fly Fishing Gear to Use on the Beaverkill:

The Beaverkill is a traditional trout stream. Use anything from a 4 to 6 weight rod. You’ll want floating line so you’re able to get the full dry fly experience. Using 9 and 12 foot leaders with 5 or 6x tippet is going to hide your identity.

BWO Blue Winged Olive for Fly Fishing

Blue Winged Olives , Black Caddis Flies, Blue Quills and Mayflies are going to be your best bet. By June, the terrestrial flies will make their way on to the water so pay close attention.

People love fly fishing New York so the resources are plentiful!

GUIDE RECOMMENDED TIP: New York weather can be unpredictable, but changes in weather can make all the difference in catch rate. Stay on the water longer by having a light packable rain jacket with you.

4. Esopus Creek – Nymph Fly Fishing

The Esopus Creek is located in Southeastern New York near Kingston. It’s actually used as drinking water for New York city. There are two main parts of the Esopus. The upper part above the Ashokan Reservoir is the more natural flow. Search for Big Indian and you’ll find plenty of access points.

The portion below the Ashokan is also fishable. It’s a larger portion because of the water flowing out of the portal. It’s a freestone stream with access all the way from the portal to Five Arches Bridge.

Guide Pro Tip: Seriously the Esopus is an amazing fishery. Read more in this guide 👉 Where to Fish on the Esopus Creek

Nymphing is going to be the most successful method. Stoneflies are going to catch the most fish, but don’t count out the mayflies and caddis. It’s best fishing is from May until September. Use a traditional trout setup with a 4 to 6 weight rod, weight forward Line and 9 foot leader.

Link with more information from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for fly fishing opprotunities on the Esopus Creek.

5. Neversink River – Smart Trout!

The Neversink river is stocked with 5,000 brown trout on a yearly basis. It is both a tailwater and freestone fishery and stays fairly cold all year round. Located in Southeast New York in Sullivan County, it holds brown, brook and rainbow trout. Fish below the dam at the Neversink Reservoir. It’s slower moving water that makes for awesome sight fishing.

Quill Gordon, BWO, Slate Drakes and Hendrickson’s are your best bet for flies. Be sure to use smaller flies ranging from size 18-26. Go ahead and try both nymping and dry fly fishing. Pay close attention to the water surface. Don’t throw a dry if you don’t see trout feeding. The opposite is true! Let the trout dictate what you throw.

fly fishing trips upstate new york

Fly Fishing on the Neversink is tough. Use the maps HERE to find the best places to hook into these “educated” trout.

This is a classic trout stream, but don’t be fooled. You’ll need to be on your “A” game to catch the fish. See what you can do, but be patient and do your best to learn the water. It’s best fished in late spring and early summer due to the amount of hatches.

For extremely accurate access points use this link .

6. AuSable River – Traditional Fly Fishing

Like several of the other rivers on this list, the AuSable River has three sections. The East, West and Main branches. The West Branch is the most well known and holds the largest trout. The aesthetics are amazing on this portion. Located in the Adirondack Mountains, traditional fly anglers can’t get enough of it. It’s one of those those streams that you don’t necessarily care if you catch fish. It’s that beautiful.

The mile above the Route 86 bridge at the Holcomb Pond down to Wilmington Notch is a catch and release portion of the river. Below this is faster pocket water so if you want a variety of water, it’s a great river to fish. Mayflies, Caddis and Stoneflies are all going to hatch so feel free to throw nymphs and dry flies. Also, don’t be afraid to throw smaller streamers in this river. You may catch one of the large holdout trout. Since the water is a bit stained, use a darker pattern.

If all else fails, throw the midge. It’s the best searching fly you can use. The best time to fish the river is early May until late June.

The traditional trout setup is best. A 4-6 weight rod with weight forward line and small tippet is necessary.

Here is another spot to fly fish on the AuSable. resource from the NYD of Environmental Conservation to use when planning your day on the AuSable:

GUIDE RECOMMENDED TIP: Some of these rivers can be stained, especially during the early season. If you’re wading, bring a wading staff to check the depth.

7. Saranac River – Landlocked Salmon

The Saranac River is located right near the AuSable and is often overlooked. Located near the Adirondacks, it’s one of the most beautiful rivers on the list. The upper portion of the river has rainbows and browns. It flows from Bloomingdale to Franklin County. Drive along River Road to find the access points. Go ahead and use a traditional trout setup for these.

Biggest King Salmon

The lower Saranac has landlocked salmon and steelhead. It’s a great spot to hit in the late fall and winter. If you’re fishing this section and targeting the salmon or steelhead, be sure to use nothing lighter than a 7-weight rod. You’ll need the power.

Go ahead and use BWO’s, Caddis and Stoneflies. Also, in mid-summer, the terrestrials will be active so keep a few in your box. It’s a great streamer river so don’t be afraid to throw some Wooly Buggers and see what you can get to strike.

There are numerous hydroelectric dams along the river so it’s an interesting mix of warm and cold water. The wide variety of fish also make this river extremely enticing!

Here is the NYD of Environmental Conservation pamphlet on the Saranac.

8. Oak Orchard Creek – Fly Fishing for Salmon

The Oak Orchard starts in the Oak Orchard swamps in Genesee County. It empties into Lake Ontario. The “Oak” holds, brown trout, Coho and Chinook Salmon along with steelhead. This is a major stocking area in the state of New York. Nearly 21,000 rainbow trout, 155,000 chinook salmon and 26,000 coho salmon are released into the Oak Orchard.

The Waterport Dam has a nice public access point. The fish are unable to get past the dam so it’s a solid spot to start. Go ahead and drift eggs for the brown trout. If you’re able to see salmon, fish below them. The brown trout want to eat the eggs from the salmon.

Bring your heavier rig. An 8-10 weight single handed rod is going to be necessary. You’ll have the chance to catch some massive fish so don’t be shy. If you want to target only trout, go ahead and drift a Wooly Bugger. They’ll give you a great fight!

HERE is more information on the Oak Orchard from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.

9. Wiscoy Creek – Great Access for the Fly Fisher

Wiscoy Creek starts in Wyoming County and flows 25 miles into the Genesee River. It’s a wonderful wild brown trout stream in Western New York. There is about 13 miles of public access and five parking areas. It’s one of the most accessible creeks on this list. The river generally has a gravel bottom with riffles and deep pools.

The traditional trout set-up is going to work best. Along with the brown’s it has wild brook trout. The Wiscoy hasn’t been stocked since 1972. The upper portions near Bliss are going to be more narrow water. The middle and lower sections are wider. Try dead drifting a Bugger or nymphing with a midge. The different types of water make it an eventful day.

More information on the Wiscoy click on the below map to see the PDF that the State of New York provides.

fly fishing trips upstate new york

GUIDE RECOMMENDED TIP: Fish in New York see quite a few artificial flies. There’s no escaping that. Be sure you’re not overestimating your abilities. Fish to your strengths; it can be a frustrating day when you’re completely out of your comfort zone.

10. West Branch of the Delaware River

The West Branch offers a fantastic blend of easy access, favorable wading conditions, and an abundance of trout. But what really sets it apart is the dry fly fishing. It’s legendary, my friend. Picture yourself casting your line as delicate mayflies dance above the water, and trout rise eagerly to snatch them. It’s a sight to behold.

Now, if you’re looking for a quieter spot, head just south of Delhi. There’s a spot there with a peaceful eddy, surrounded by riffles and pools. It’s perfect for wading and exploring. While you can definitely try out streamers and nymphs, the real thrill here is dry fly fishing. Keep your eyes on those pools and riffles during hatches – that’s where the action happens.

11. Willowemoc Creek

If you’re looking to fish in New York, Willowemoc Creek is your spot. It’s about 27 miles of prime fishing territory, but I’ll tell you where I’ve had the most luck.

Rainbow Trout Scales

First off, start near Roscoe, where Willowemoc meets the Beaverkill. It’s got a wide creek, great for wading, and the slow current and riffles are perfect for dry fly fishing. Here’s the location: https://goo.gl/maps/jsk41TgxM7aZ4DXk7 .

If you prefer a quieter spot, head to Anderson. It’s a no-kill section with a good mix of riffles and larger pools. Plus, there’s a great pool on the inner bend that’s always full of fish.

Remember, Willowemoc is great for fly fishing, and you’ll find plenty of brown, rainbow, and brook trout. Just keep an eye on the stream flow – under 100 CFS is ideal. Happy fishing!

12. Ten Mile Creek

Tenmile Creek gets its name from its length. Located in Eastern New York, it flows for about 10 miles before it finds its way into Catskill Creek . It’s not a stocked river and hosts brown and rainbow trout. The upper five miles are home to more brown trout and the lower five hold both rainbow and brown.

Don’t make fishing this creek too complicated! A smaller 4-weight rod is going to be plenty. Use a 9 foot leader with 5x tippet. Smaller nymphs and dry flies are best. Any caddis or mayfly pattern size 16-22 is going to produce fish.

Guide Pro Tip: I’ve got a complete guide to the West Branch, detailing the maps, flies and techniques. Check it out 👉 Where to Fish on the West Branch of the Delaware

13. Chittenango Creek

The final stream on this list is Chittenango Creek. Located in central New York, it runs out of Nelson Swamp near Cazenovia to Oneida Lake. There are about five miles of Public Fishing Rights on this stream. Most of the public access is going to be along Route 13. It’s a faster moving stream so be prepared to make a lot of casts.

Brown trout love ants

One of the highlights of this stream is the 170 foot waterfall in Chittenango Falls State Park. This stream is home to brown trout, brookies, bass and walleye. The upper portion of the stream is going to hold more of the trout. As you get closer to Oneida Lake, you’ll find the walleye and bass. It’s open year round so keep it on your list.

Under the silhouette of the mountains, Upstate New York's West Branch Ausable River provides a great trout bite with a memorable backdrop for fly fishing.

Betters also created the Usual, another Ausable staple. An attractor fly tied with the fur from the foot of a snowshoe hare, the Usual imitates no insect in particular, and can be dead-drifted, skittered across the surface, or even swung as a wet fly.

Most fly-fishermen on the Ausable use 4- or 5-weight rods, and while catch-and-release areas provide year ‘round fishing opportunities, the peak season, which coincides with the largest hatches and highest trout activity, runs from April through October. In Search of Illusive Catskill Mountain Trout

Navigating a labyrinth of vibrant Hudson Valley rivers with fly rod and camera in hand

In Search of Illusive Catskill Mountain Trout

Jonathan Mehring

Photographer

Guest Contributor

When my friend and fly fishing fanatic, Ports Bishop, asked me to come along on a trip to pull some trout out of a secret river in the Catskills, I couldn’t have been happier to say yes. Growing up in Virginia I fished often, but now that I live in New York City, the number of days I get on water a year could be counted on one hand. (Full disclosure: the East River has tempted me more than a few times.)

We jumped into his brand new Subaru and headed north, soon crossing the George Washington Bridge, and made our way towards the mountains. Roughly 100 miles later we reached the Catskills, a notable range in New York's Hudson Valley, home to enumerable tributaries that all eventually drain into the Hudson River below. For the fishing inclined, opportunities to hone the craft are near limitless—and depending on the season, brook, brown, and rainbow trout abundant too.

At our chosen destination we met up the rest of the crew—a group of talented anglers who, along with sharing a love for fishing, run Neversink , a new boutique creative agency out of the region. Deep in the hills we found a particularly nice spot where the hatch of airborne insects was sure to be thick.

We made our way slowly upstream, prowling the waters for the ever-elusive rainbows, moving through rapids and over slippery rocks without pause. Our eyes trained on the water ahead, watching for jumpers or smooth areas where one could be hiding. Catch and release was the name of the game, and though the number of bites was less than anticipated, we called it a successful day nonetheless.

By the time we dragged our tired selves back to the cars the sun was long gone, and a satisfied smile had settled on each of our faces. It wouldn’t be long before any of us returned.

fly fishing in upstate New York

If you’re looking for a state that is rich in fish, and offers all kinds of streams, lakes, and rivers, then maybe it’s time to think about New York State. Often, what comes to mind when we think of New York is the city, of course, with all its bustling excitement, entertainment, and action. And while you can certainly find that in New York City, there is so much more to the state than just that.

New York is a mecca for fly fishing enthusiasts, thanks to the Catskills and Adirondacks. In fact, some say New York offers the best fishing east of the Rocky Mountains. That’s not a bad title to be given. These areas in particular are known for their clear streams and lakes, which are ideal for trout. Common fish species include trout, bass, northern pike, salmon, walleye, and muskies.

So, now that you’ve been convinced that the state has plenty to offer, it’s time to take a look at its top destinations.

Taking a look at New York, you may be surprised to hear that it offers 70,000 miles worth of streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes. We’re talking about over 7,500 ponds and lakes alone to choose from. It’s no wonder that it’s such a popular destination for anglers looking for a challenge and some fun. As well, thanks to the fact you can find both saltwater and freshwater, the state offers a whopping 165 species of fish. As a fly fisher, you’re probably most interested in the trout, and there is no shortage of them to be found.

While it’s literally impossible to touch upon all the top places in the state, we will try our best to touch upon a handful of them.

The Esopus Creek is a part of the Catskills and makes for a fabulous place for anyone looking to fish for brown, wild, and rainbow trout. You’ll find a massive quantity of them here, thanks to the fact they are migrating upstream . This migration happens during their spawning, and they are coming from the Ashokan Reservoir. There are four main parts of the Esopus, with most anglers preferring the low area at Stony Clove Creek.

The creek is quite wide in this section and there are plenty of trout to be found averaging about nine to 12 inches in length. It’s recommended that you don’t wade in the stream as it can be rather tricky. As well, this stream tends to get pretty busy in the summer because tubers love to make their way along the stream. This means that fall and spring are the best times to visit.

AuSable River, West Branch

The AuSable River, West Branch is an ideal place to fish for trout starting in about mid-May all the way through until mid-October. There are two sections of the river that are open year-round, but take note that these are catch and release areas only. Plus, it is dependent on the weather that you are able to fish. This river is located within the Adirondack Mountains, which means you’re in for some great natural beauty. The trout here are of moderate size, ranging from 10-17 inches. The river features different sections, with some running faster and more aggressively than others. This makes for some challenging conditions. But it may be that’s exactly what you’re hoping for.

Streams of the Catskills, Upper Delaware River

If it’s wild trout you’re after, it’s hard to beat what the Delaware River has to offer. Here, the water runs cold and there are a massive amount of insects, which means perfect conditions for trout. In fact, this river has been a popular spot for fly fishing since the 1870s, so clearly it’s got a reputation.

While this one isn’t stocked, you’ll have no problem catching brown and rainbow trout. Anglers boast about not just the conditions but also how fabulous the quality of the trout is here. A large portion of the river is open to the public for fishing, however, there are some sections that are private. Just be sure that you’re aware of the land you’re on and that it is okay for you to be there.

Located in the Catskills, the Neversink River is another stream that is not to be missed when you come for a fishing trip. This river can be found in New York’s southeastern region. While this river may look quite stunning, as it is very narrow and long, anglers describe it as “volatile”. You’re in for a real challenge when you hit up the Neversink. Unfortunately, there is a large portion of the river that is private, but not to worry. There are some public areas that are well worth the visit.

Typically, you can find wild brown trout and wild brook trout. The fish tend to be about eight to 12 inches in length. This river tends to stay cold, even in the middle of summer, which means the trout are always around. It’s also known for some pretty good hatches, which helps the conditions in a big way. It should be noted that the Neversink’s hatches tend to be a few weeks behind many of the other streams and rivers in this region.

Picking the best season or time of year to fish can make a huge impact in the quality and quantity of fish you’re catching. As a general rule in New York State, June through the end of September is really the best time for trout fishing. This coincides with the hatches that are taking place in great numbers at this time of year.

What some anglers find frustrating is the amount of bugs that are out during this time of year, such as mosquitoes. They can get quite annoying. If you’d rather avoid them, but still enjoy fishing during this season, opt for September since the temperatures will be starting to cool off. Now, if the mosquitoes and bugs don’t bother you, then summer is a great time for catching fish. Keep in mind that you’ll want to wear plenty of sun protection and dress for the weather, which can get quite hot and even muggy.

If you plan on fishing in the Adirondacks, Catskills, or other regions in the state, then it’s important to note that during the months of April and May the water is still at a high level and quite cold, which means there isn’t much in terms of hatches. The hatches really start up in mid to late May and then last until fall starts to set in along with the cold. This signals the end of the heavy hatches.

When it comes to the ideal equipment for fly fishing in the streams in New York, there isn’t an exact science to it. Typically it’s best to customize your equipment to match up with the size of the fish you plan to catch.

You don’t want a fishing rod that is less than 7.5 feet in length, and probably no more than 10 feet in length.  If the area you are fishing in has lots of low hanging trees and brushes, shorter rods are much easier to handle, so you won’t be getting caught in them.

There are many opportunities for wading, so be sure to bring along your chest height waders.

When it comes to your flies, opt for dry flies such as light cahill, adams, and pale evening dun. You can also use streamers in sizes eight through 10, nymphs in sizes 10, 12, and 14, and even some wet flies if you like.

Anyone who is 16 years of age and older will need a fishing license in order to fish in the state. There are annual, seven, and one day licenses available for both residents and non-residents.

Keep in mind that there are special license requirements for “border waters”. These are waters that border other states or provinces in the country of Canada.

For this reason, you’ll need to do a bit of planning ahead of time to ensure you have the right license. The license and permits are available through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Picking New York State as your fly fishing destination means you’ve got some wonderful and challenging regions to enjoy fishing in. Both the Catskills and Adirondack are known across the country as superb places for fly fishing. The conditions are just right for all kinds of different trout species to flourish. When planning your trip to either of these regions or other areas in the state, you may want to try to aim for spring or fall. You won’t have to contend with mosquitos and other pests, the temperatures aren’t quite as hot, and the fish will be active and ready for the taking.

The Trip, Day 89: Japan

Alberto Rey  is a longtime Upstate New York steelhead guide, 2021 Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Guide of the Year, and a Distinguished Professor for Research and Creative Activity at the State University of New York at Fredonia. He and his wife have embarked on a round-the-world trip, and they have generously agreed to share occasional updates from their travels.

Today I experienced something that I had been looking forward to for some time. There was something appealing about the idea of fly fishing in Japan. Perhaps it was because I had not heard of many anglers who had fly-fished on the island; perhaps it was because of the spirituality that is ingrained in the Japanese culture; or perhaps it was because that is where the simplest form of fly fishing, tenkara, started 400 years ago. Maybe it was a combination of all of these, but when I learned that I could schedule a trip to a remote stream outside of Tokyo with Motohiro Ebisudani, a guide and owner of TROUT & KING Fishing Tours , I contacted him immediately.

fly fishing trips upstate new york

Like most things related to fly fishing, I got his contact information through a circuitous route. I first reached out to Phil Monahan at Orvis for some advice for fly fishing anglers in Japan. He reached out to his contacts and got a response from Brad Befus, president of Scientific Anglers, who shared a contact at TIEMCO LTD. The Tiemco representative was, Kenji Nakamine, who was too busy to fish, but suggested I contact his friend, Mr. Ebisudani, who took me out for a spectacular day of fishing.

Motohiro Ebisudani, better known as Ebi, picked me up at 6:30 a.m. at my hotel in Tokyo in his narrow black van. We then began to get acquainted with each other as we tried to escape the crowded streets and highways of the city. I always find this time very enlightening and learn a great deal from the guides about the region, their lives, and other fishing opportunities. For instance, I did not know that you did not need to go to Mongolia or Russia to land a taimen. Japan has its own version of these giant trout, Sakhalin taimen, which are found in the north island of Japan, Hokkaido. After two hours of chatting, we found ourselves standing on top of a mountain looking across the valley at the epic sight of a snow-covered Mt. Fuji.

fly fishing trips upstate new york

Another hour later, I was standing in a crystal-clear pool feeling extremely fortunate and content, having landed two different native Japanese trout on dry flies. One of these was a trophy sized Iwana (a char) that ever-so-slowly rose from its lie on the gravelly sand bar to inhale an orange-winged mayfly pattern, as it passed along a rock wall that lined the bank. It was a wonderful sight! I was so mesmerized by the slow take that I almost forgot to set the hook.

I continued to catch fish as we climbed over boulders to reach deep, slow-moving pockets of water on this mountain stream. The fish that took Ebi’s flies preferred the shallow, slow water. You could see other fish in the deeper pools, but they were not interested in spending any energy to move through the currents to take our small imitations.

fly fishing trips upstate new york

The Iwana and Yamame are beautiful little gems and remind me of our brook trout. They can be found in small intimate streams with plenty of tree cover, and are aggressive when not spooked. We used 12- and 15-foot leaders to hide our presence. While the leaders were difficult to cast under the overhanging branches, I periodically surprised myself with a low, sidearm cast to where the fish were located and was immediately rewarded.

I feel as though I’ve met a new friend in Ebi, and I hope we will meet again on my home waters, searching for steelhead on the Lake Erie tribs of western New York.

Fisherman Drowns While Trying to Retrieve His Keys on a Father’s Day Trip

By Natalie Krebs

Posted on Jun 18, 2024 3:27 PM EDT

3 minute read

A New York man drowned Sunday after attempting to retrieve his keys from a lake. A second man who jumped in to rescue him remains hospitalized. The drowning victim was identified as Anthony Davis, 44, of Clay, according to a statement from the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office.

Davis was fishing with Wattie Capers, 42, and another unidentified male in the Finger Lakes region to celebrate Father’s Day. An investigation is ongoing so it’s not immediately clear how Davis’ keys may have fallen in the water, but the men were reportedly fishing from a pier where the Oneida River flows into Oneida Lake. Davis attempted to retrieve the keys but couldn’t return to land. Capers jumped in to rescue him “but was also unable to make it back to land,” according to a written statement from Lt. Andy Bucher, who was unavailable for comment. One photo of the rescue shows that the Waterfront Tavern pier is several feet above the water line.

Around 9:51 a.m. officers with the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol heard “yelling for help” and “came across two people in the water that were in distress.” Officials were able to retrieve Capers from the water, who was transported to Upstate Hospital in Syracuse.

At 10:09 a.m. a Madison County NY Fire/Emergency Dispatch admin updated first responders about a possible drowning. Multiple agencies responded to the incident and at 10:25 a.m., the dispatch was updated to note divers from Oswego and Onondaga counties were on the scene with air assistance on the way.

A diver from the Brewerton Fire Department located Davis, who was pulled from the water and also transported to Upstate Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Davis is survived by his wife and children. Capers remains hospitalized.

“Quick update on Wattie Capers,” Antonise Capers said of her husband’s condition in a Facebook post Monday evening. “He’s doing a lot better, responding to commands, no more seizures, blood work great, all imaging scans were great today. Next step is removing the eeg and trying to get him to breathe completely on his own. I appreciate all of the messages, prayers, calls etc… please keep those prayers going because it’s working.”

Frank Vercillo, who heard the news of Davis’ drowning on the radio, says he spoke with both Capers and Davis shortly before the incident.

“Minutes before this happened my son Hank and I had the pleasure of talking to them both. We left the Waterfront dock at 9am,” Vercillo wrote in a Facebook post Monday. “When they arrived they asked us how we were doing and then wished us both a Happy Father’s day. Very nice young men. They were busting each other’s chops but you could tell that they were close. When my son told me they were the guys we were talking to I just couldn’t wrap [sic] my head around it.”

This is not the first time an angler has drowned attempting to retrieve a lost possession. In 2023 69-year-old angler Robert Gardella drowned after one of his fishing rods fell in the Colorado River. Witnesses say Gardella jumped in after the rod but quickly came back to the surface where he struggled for a few moments before disappearing underwater; divers recovered his body the following morning.

The Caughdenoy Volunteer Fire Department, who responded to the Oneida incident, urged “everyone to wear a life jacket anytime they are near water, no matter how shallow.”

HASTINGS, N.Y. (TMX) - A man drowned after attempting to retrieve his keys from an upstate New York lake during a Father’s Day fishing trip on Sunday, authorities said.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office said its marine patrol was patrolling Oneida Lake when they came across two people in distress in the water near the pier just south of the Waterfront Tavern in the town of Hastings at around 9:51 a.m. Sunday.

Members of Brewerton Fire Department arrived on scene to assist.

Deputies were able to retrieve one of the men, identified as 42-year-old Wattie Cappers, of Syracuse. He was transported to Upstate Hospital in stable condition.

Fire department divers located the second man, identified as 44-year-old Anthony Davis, of Clay, and pulled him from the water. He was transported to Upstate Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the sheriff’s office, Cappers, Davis and another man were out fishing for Father’s Day when Davis’ keys fell into the water.

Davis went into the water to retrieve them, but couldn’t make it back to land.

Cappers jumped in after Davis in an attempt to rescue him, but he also couldn’t make it back to land. That’s when nearby deputies heard them yelling for help.

The sheriff’s office said the incident is under investigation.
