Music of the Spheres World Tour

2022–2024 concert tour by coldplay / from wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Music of the Spheres World Tour is the ongoing eighth concert tour undertaken by British rock band Coldplay . Announced on 14 October 2021, it is being staged in support of their ninth studio album, Music of the Spheres , marking their return to live performances after the COVID-19 pandemic . The band had not toured for their previous record, Everyday Life (2019), because they wanted to launch an environmentally friendly strategy to travel. According to the plans they developed over the previous two years with specialists, CO 2 emissions will be reduced by 50% in comparison to the Head Full of Dreams Tour (2016–17).

Similar to the Mylo Xyloto Tour (2011–12), the concerts make extensive use of pyrotechnics and confetti . However, they were adapted to minimise the group's carbon footprint . Other ideas involved creating the first mobile rechargeable show battery in the world with BMW and planting a tree for every ticket sold. The tour began at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica on 18 March 2022 and is scheduled to end at New Zealand's Eden Park on 16 November 2024. Coldplay received widespread acclaim from music critics, who praised the band for their musicianship, stage presence, joyfulness, and production value.

With a global cultural impact , the Music of the Spheres World Tour surpassed $810.9 million in revenue from 7.66 million tickets across 132 dates, making it the third-highest-grossing and second-most attended tour of all time. The band also broke several records at the venues they visited. To celebrate the performances, Music of the Spheres: Live at River Plate (2023) was broadcast in cinemas around the world. Emissions from the concert run were reduced by 59%, leading Time to include Coldplay among the most influential climate action leaders on the planet. Similarly, Pollstar declared that they ushered into "a new era of sustainable touring".

Sustainability plan [ ]

Alongside the announcement, the band released a detailed plan outlining how they could have the least possible impact on the environment, resulting in 50% less carbon dioxide generated than during the A Head Full of Dreams Tour . Coldplay and a number of leading environmental experts worked on the plan for over two years, and it includes a number of innovative sustainability strategies. For example, the band has collaborated with BMW to develop the first "mobile, rechargeable show battery" to power each concert on the tour, and the stage will be constructed from "a combination of lightweight, low-carbon, and re-usable materials (including bamboo and recycled steel) that can be properly reused or recycled at the end of the tour." In addition, they have pledged to plant one tree for every ticket sold. [2]

The tour, like the Mylo Xyloto Tour and the A Head Full of Dreams Tour, will include extensive pyrotechnic and confetti visuals, as well as a third generation of Xylobands for audience members to wear. However, according to Coldplay's sustainability plan, these features will be adapted in such a way that their inclusion in each show on the tour will be more considerate towards the environment: the band have stated that they are investing in "a new generation of sustainable pyrotechnics that have less explosive charge and new formulas that greatly reduce or eliminate harmful chemicals", that "confetti used during the show will be 100% biodegradable and will require significantly less compressed gas for ignition than on previous tours", and that the LED wristbands will be made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials". Coldplay said:

“Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We’ve been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together.

At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn. It’s a work in progress and we’re really grateful for the help we’ve had so far.

If you’d like to come to a show and sing with us, we’re so excited to see you.”

Reduce our consumption, recycle extensively and cut our CO2 emissions by 50%.

Support new green technologies and develop new sustainable, super-low carbon touring methods.

Make the tour as environmentally beneficial as possible by funding a portfolio of nature- and technology-based projects and by drawing down significantly more CO2 than the tour produces.

Initiatives

Co2 emissions.

We have pledged to cut the tour’s direct emissions by more than 50% compared to our previous tour (2016-17), and work with our partners and suppliers to reduce their impacts and emissions as much as possible.

We’ve teamed up with DHL as the tour’s Official Logistics Partner in order to minimise emissions from freight and transportation. As leaders in the field of sustainable transport and logistics, DHL  support the tour by offering solutions to minimise logistics-related emissions and other environmental impacts, from advanced biofuels in the air to electric vehicles on land.

Where we cannot reduce, we will be drawing down any unavoidable emissions following the guidance within the Oxford Principles for Net-Zero Aligned carbon offsetting.

We continue to capture climate impact data and calculate our environmental footprint aligning to emissions reporting standards and appropriate conversion factors.

We have adapted all tour operations to minimise emissions, in line with the best science and practices: from set build to travel to freight to power.

We avoid fossil fuels, use clean energy and use reusable and sustainable biomaterials wherever possible.

CO2 drawdown

Despite our best efforts, the tour will still have a significant carbon footprint. We pledge to drawdown more CO2 than the tour produces supporting projects based on reforestation, rewilding, conservation, soil regeneration, carbon capture & storage and renewable energy.

As part of this pledge, the tour is funding the planting – and lifelong protection of – millions of new trees including one tree for every ticket sold .

Our stage production is now powered almost entirely with renewable, super-low emission energy. We avoid fossil fuels wherever possible.

SUSTAINABLE BIOFUELS

Battery system, kinetic energy, grid renewables.

Although the tour has been carefully routed and pre-planned to minimise air travel, some flying is unavoidable. The band does mostly fly on commercial flights, but there are inevitably occasions when charter flights are required for band, crew and equipment.

For all flights, commercial and charter, we pay a surcharge to use or supply Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), either for our own use or for others’. We source Sustainable Aviation Fuel produced 100% from waste and residues, such as used cooking oil from restaurants. When used unblended with fossil jet fuel, SAF helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions of air travel by up to 80% over the entire life cycle compared to the conventional fossil jet fuel that it replaces.

Wherever possible, we use electric vehicles or biofuel for ground freight and transportation.

We send a sustainability rider to all venues and stadiums in advance to request best environmental practices.

In various locations, in order to minimise freight emissions, we adapt the show so we can utilise local equipment, materials and resources.

We select building materials and show effects based on their environmental credentials:

Stages are built from a combination of lightweight, low-carbon and re-usable materials including recycled steel, that can be appropriately reused or recycled at the end of the tour.

LED WRISTBANDS

The reusable LED wristbands worn by the audience as part of the show are made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials.

We have reduced wristband production by 80% through collecting, sterilising and recharging them after every show.

Our wristband return rate averaged 86% during the first year of the tour.

LIGHTING & AUDIO

The show has upgraded to ultra-efficient equipment such as a low-energy LED screens laser and lighting systems and a PA system with up to 50% less power consumption compared to the previous tour, which also dramatically reduces environmental noise outside the venues.

Special effects

Confetti used during the show is 100% biodegradable and requires considerably less compressed gas for ignition than on previous tours.

We are using a new generation of sustainable pyrotechnics that have less explosive charge and new formulas that greatly reduce or eliminate harmful chemicals. All tubing and holders are either biodegradable or recyclable.

Audience travel makes up a major part of any tour’s carbon emissions.

We have partnered with SAP on the development of a free tour app that encourages fans to use low carbon transport to and from shows. Download the free app here!

Fans who commit to low-carbon travel will be given a discount code.

CO2 DRAWDOWNS

Based on fans’ use of the app , we have and will continue to calculate the total carbon footprint of travel to and from shows. By supporting climate initiatives we will drawdown all of these emissions via nature-based solutions like rewilding and conservation, and we pledge to continue doing so. As part of this, we plant at least one new tree per ticket sold, sustained for its lifetime.

ACTIVATIONS

The tour includes onsite activations like our energy zone, powered by solar and kinetic energy. These activations feature interactive and educational experiences highlighting innovations in clean technology and the natural world.

We maximise our water efficiency where possible.

Our sustainability rider asks venues to introduce aerated taps, low flushing toilets and reducing water pressure to alleviate water wastage.

Water refill stations for the fans are provided wherever possible.

Fans are encourage to bring a refillable water bottle to the venue, wherever possible.

We minimise waste and promote recycling at our shows.

Working with venues, we strive to eliminate the sale of single-use plastic water bottles. They will be replaced with reusable and recyclable alternatives.

We work with each venue to help and encourage them to establish recycling programs within the stadium where not already in place.

The tour also helps to clean up waste beyond the concerts themselves by sponsoring the two-tiered work of The Ocean Cleanup:

River Interceptors remove thousands of tonnes of garbage from some of the most polluting rivers around the world, intercepting waste before it reaches the ocean.

Ocean Cleanup units are working in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to clear 90% of floating ocean plastic by 2040.

The carbon emissions of food can account for up to 20% of a person’s carbon footprint. Food production, transportation and waste is a massive contributor to climate change and we address this within our crew catering operation.

PLANT-BASED

All our crew catering menus have plant-based and meat-free options as standard.

LOCALLY SOURCED

Organic produce is sourced from local suppliers or farms that practice regenerative agriculture techniques.

We are supporting the development of synthetic, lab-grown cultured foods.

We partner with local food banks to donate any surplus food where possible.

Organic waste, such as vegetable peelings and scraps, is composted wherever possible.

MERCHANDISE

All merch is sustainably and ethically sourced. Where possible, all plastics and polyesters will be replaced with natural alternatives like organic cotton.

Wherever possible, all merchandise is made of natural fibres and recycled / recyclable elements.

Partners and vendors are carefully selected to provide high quality & sustainable merchandise.

All products are sourced with vendors who prove ethical work practices including fair wages and good working conditions.

Wherever possible, all merchandise is packaged in recycled paper, card or compostable bags.

We also encourage venues to mirror these standards in their food concessions.

GOOD CAUSES

As we have always done, we will put 10% of everything we earn (touring, records, publishing etc) into a good causes fund.   These funds will be split between environmental and socially-conscious projects and charities including ClientEarth, The Ocean Cleanup and One Tree Planted.   We are working in partnership with EarthPercent as a founding donor.

We acknowledge that, despite our best efforts,   the tour will still have a significant carbon footprint.   We pledge to drawdown significantly more emissions than the tour produces by supporting various nature projects around the world, focusing on reforestation, rewilding, conservation and soil regeneration.

REFORESTATION

Working with One Tree Planted, we have supported 21 planting projects across 17 countries from ecosystem regeneration in the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil to revegetating Marna Banggara in Australia. Planting trees in areas that have been degraded or deforested has helped the environment by accelerating and assuring the re-establishment of healthy forests. Soil health is critical to a healthy planet and we are supporting positive soil restoration projects that regenerate the land, promote biodiversity and sequester millions of tonnes of CO2.

Biodiverse landscapes (such as ancient woodland) sequester up to 80% more CO2 because of the complex soil structure.   For this reason, we are avoiding mono-culture plantations.

Food Forest Project The Sustainable Food Trust

In addition to Ocean Cleanup’s work, we are supporting ocean conservation and the protection of marine species, seagrass meadow restoration and management of seaweed blooms.

The Ocean Cleanup Sea Shepherd Project Seagrass Seafields

We are investing in projects that restore degraded and marginal land to its natural uncultivated state, thereby promoting biodiversity, capturing CO2 emissions and providing support for ecosystems such as natural flood defenses.

Project Quercus Farm Under the Radar

CONSERVATION

We’re proud to support MyTrees Trust / Miti Yangu in Zimbabwe.   This community-led project will protect a vast new area of wilderness, support the regeneration of forest and provide a habitat for critically-threatened wildlife.

My Trees Trust / Miti Yangu

CONSERVATION AT SEA

We are supporting the efforts of Captain Paul Watson Foundation to stop the damaging effects of overfishing and threats to marine wildlife, particularly whales and dolphins.

Captain Paul Watson Foundation

TRANSPARENCY

We’re committed to the ongoing measurement of our environmental impacts – both positive and negative – so that we can make further improvements as we go along.

We are working with Green Nation , Live Nation’s sustainability platform, as a special artist advisor. This will ensure sustainable practices developed on this tour are shared, adopted and scaled throughout the rest of the industry.

Coldplay praised for “setting a new standard” as they share update on tour emission success

It has so far produced nearly 60 per cent less CO2e emissions than their 2016-17 stadium tour

Coldplay performing on stage at Wembley Stadium, north London, during their Music of the Spheres tour.

Coldplay have shared an update about the sustainability initiatives they have implemented on their ongoing tour, and been praised as “setting a new standard” when it comes to an eco-conscious approach to live music.

The band – who have always been conscious of the environmental impact of touring – shared an update on the sustainability results they have achieved so far earlier today (June 2).

The ‘ Music Of The Spheres’ tour , which began back in March 2022 and has sold over 9million tickets so far, has been revealed to have already produced 59 per cent less CO2e emissions than their previous stadium tour in 2016 and 2017. This already beats the original target that Chris Martin and co. had set to ensure they beat those of previous tours by 50 per cent.

It has also been revealed that 7million trees have been planted globally thanks to the success of the live shows. This comes as a result of the band promising to have one tree planted for every person who attends the tour.

“When we first announced the ‘Music Of The Spheres Tour’ in 2021, we pledged to reduce our direct carbon emissions (from show production, freight, band and crew travel) by at least 50 per cent,” the band wrote in a new statement. “We’re happy to report that direct CO2e emissions from the first two years of this tour are 59 per cent less than our previous stadium tour (2016-17), on a show-by-show comparison. These figures have been verified by the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to our incredible touring family and to all the brilliant people who’ve made this possible. Most of all, we’d like to thank everyone who’s come to a show and helped charge the show batteries on the power bikes and kinetic dance floors; everyone who’s arrived by foot, bike, ride share or public transport; everyone who’s come with refillable water bottles or returned their LED wristband for recycling; and everyone who’s bought a ticket, which means you’ve already planted one of 7 million trees so far,” they added.

“As a band, and as an industry, we’re a long way from where we need to be on this. But we’re grateful for everyone’s help so far, and we salute everyone who’s making efforts to push things in the right direction.”

Other new findings shared in the report include confirmation of an 86 per cent average return rate of the reusable, plant-based LED wristbands used at shows, 72 per cent of all tour waste diverted from landfill and sent for reuse, recycling and composting, and two solar-powered Ocean Cleanup River Interceptors deployed.

Additionally, it has been shown that 18 shows were powered entirely using the tourable battery system in 2023 made from recycled BMW i3 batteries, 23 partnerships were secured with green travel providers to help fans travel to shows via super-low carbon transport, and there was an average of 17kWh power per show generated via in-venue solar installations, kinetic dance floors and power bikes – enough to power the band’s C-stage performance each night.

The statistics have also been validated by Professor John E. Fernandez of MIT’s (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Environmental Solutions Initiative, who praised the band for “again setting a new standard for the entire music industry.”

“For some time now, Coldplay has been leading by example in taking seriously and acting on the various interrelated environmental and social challenges facing humanity; climate change, biodiversity loss, air and water pollution, environmental injustice and more,” Fernandez added.

“With each subsequent year of their tour, they demonstrate an evolving vision and expanded commitment to move the entire music industry toward true and humane sustainability and planetary resilience. From collecting unprecedented amounts of data to taking specific actions today based on rigorous analysis, Coldplay is modelling a trajectory toward a low carbon, biodiverse and equitable future.”

Chris Martin of Coldplay performs at Optus Stadium on November 18, 2023 in Perth, Australia.

Coldplay’s ‘Music Of The Spheres World Tour’ continues in Athens, Greece next week and will also see the band headline at Glastonbury for the fifth time .

Their set at Worthy Farm this month will see them become the first act to top the Glastonbury bill five times, following headline performances in 2002, 2005, 2011 and 2016.

It’ll also come following them sharing details of a 25th anniversary vinyl edition of ‘Brothers & Sisters’ and making headlines with their headline show at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend  last month.

As for the future of the group, Martin has previously stated that he has plans to stop writing music as a band by 2025 .

“Well I know I can tell you: our last proper record will come out in 2025 and after that I think we will only tour,” Martin said during an interview with Jo Wiley. “Maybe we’ll do some collaborative things but the Coldplay catalogue, as it were, finishes then.”

NME spoke with Coldplay back in 2021 and Martin revealed a similar sentiment to us: “We’re going to make 12 albums. Because it’s a lot to pour everything into making them. I love it and it’s amazing, but it’s very intense too.”

“I feel like because I know that challenge is finite, making this music doesn’t feel difficult, it feels like, ‘This is what we’re supposed to be doing’.”

Back in 2022, the ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour was given a glowing five-star review by NME , and described as delivering “a fantastical, feel-good bonanza that delivers on a bold promise”.

Coldplay says they've beaten their emissions target for 'Music of the Spheres' world tour

Coldplay says they've beaten their emissions target for 'Music of the Spheres' world tour

Coldplay has beaten its emissions target for their "Music of the Spheres" World tour.

On social media, the band proudly shared the great green news, saying "the first two years of this tour is 59% less than our previous stadium tour on a show-by-show comparison."

In their statement, Coldplay said they initially planned to "reduce our direct carbon emissions (show production, freight, band and crew travel) by at least 50%."

The British band also made sure to include a statement from Prof. John E. Fernandez of the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative, which verified the figures.

"This latest analysis of Coldplay's impact on the environment from touring is again setting a new standard for the entire music industry. The data and the methods of analysis support the conclusion that substantial profess has been made to reduce emissions in touring.," Fernandez said.

Coldyplay made ambitious sustainability commitments when it announced the "Music of the Spheres" World Tour back in 2021 . Apart from pledging to cut their tour emissions by 50%, Coldplay also committed to having renewable energy power their shows, with solar panels at every concert, as well as power bikes and kinetic dance floors, where fans can charge the show battery to power the C stage at the following show.

The band also pledged to plant one tree for every ticket sold and attempted the reuse system for the compostable plant-based LED wristband it distributed to concert goers and which were to be collected at the end of each show.

When Coldplay performed In the Philippines last January, bike racks and EV chargers were made available on site, while concert goers were encouraged to bring refillable rubber bottles as water stations were scattered throughout the concourse and the field.

Power bikes and kinetic dance floors were also present in Bulacan, as well as reusable LED wristbands.

Unfortunately, the Philippines had the lowest return rate of the wristbands at a measly 87%.

A 2023 study by Plymouth University commissioned by Break Free from Plastic put forward reuse as a solution to the plastic problem , saying reuse best fits closed systems like concerts or food courts. For it to work best, the reusables must not look like collectibles, otherwise attendees will take them home.

Despite this, Coldplay is celebrating its sustainability success. Cutting carbon emissions, also referred to as greenhouse gas emissions, is among the most important things to do for the world to curb the climate crisis and meet the 1.5C target set in the Paris Agreement of 2015.

At the moment, the world has warmed 1.2C so every bit of climate action helps — including those initiated by Coldplay in making their tour less carbon intensive.

Touring — with flights, freight, and power — is carbon intensive and an important aspect of the music industry. In its statement, Coldplay acknowledged that "as a band and as an industry, we're a long way from where we need to be."

But the band is leading the music industry — as well as millions of people around the world who count themselves as Coldplay fans — with their sustainability efforts.

In their statement, the band thanked "everyone who's come to a show and helped charge the show batteries on the power bikes and kinetic dance floors; everyone whose arrived by foot, bike, ride share or public transport; everyone who's come with refillable water bottles or returned their LED wristband for recycling; and everyone who's bought a ticket, which means you've already planted one of 7 million trees so far," it said.

Coldplay played a two-night show in the Philippines last January. Jikamarie was the opening act while Lola Amour served as surprise guest on the first night.

Among those in attendance were the Philippine President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., and first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos.
