Points and payouts: Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry both move inside top 15 in FedExCup standings

The pluck of the Irish!

Sometimes a seemingly disappointing par is all it takes because, well, golf. That’s what happened on the only hole required in a sudden-death playoff at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans from which Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Shane Lowry of Ireland emerged with the victory.

In the penultimate grouping of the final round at TPC Louisiana, the duo was the second to conclude regulation in 25-under 263. The first consisted of the team of Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer. They went out in the sixth of 20 groups for alternate shot and promptly hung up a 9-under 63, best of the day. Alas, Trainer would miss a short-range par attempt in the playoff on the par-5 18th hole to extend the playoff.

While both Ramey and Trainer remain positioned with one PGA TOUR title apiece, this goes into the books as the 25th in McIlroy’s career. It’s Lowry’s third. McIlroy was a tournament debutant, but he’s still in the peak of his career, and Lowry has struggled with his putting, but it’s not surprising that the collaboration of the two major champions was second-shortest to win pre-tournament at BetMGM with odds of +750. The Ramey/Trainer tandem was +12500.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry news conference after winning Zurich Classic

Tournament favorites and 2022 champions Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele (+450) finished seven strokes outside the playoff and in a share of 23rd place. Defending champions Nick Hardy and Davis Riley (+5500) were another stroke back in an eight-way tie for 28th.

10 Best Things To Do In Tours, France

By: Author Christine Rogador

Posted on Published: August 14, 2021  - Last updated: February 20, 2023

Are you looking for the best things to do in Tours, France ?

The birthplace of Honoré de Balzac , one of France’s greatest authors , the city of Tours is the gateway to the Loire Valley . It was also once the base of the French government.

Planked by the rivers Cher and Loire, Tours is the largest city in the French region of Centre-Val de Loire. It offers sights and activities you cannot (and should not) say no to.

Things you'll find in this article

1. Be awed by Loire Valley’s famous chateaux in Tours

2. understand why tours is known as “le jardin de la france” , 3. visit cathédrale saint gatien de tours, 4. enjoy the medieval and local atmosphere at place plumereau, tours, 5. visit the past at the musée du compagnonnage, 6. pay homage to st. martin at the basilique saint martin, 7. stroll across pont wilson (wilson bridge), 8. meet the giant cedar tree at the musée des beaux-arts de tours, 9. buy flowers at marché aux fleurs (flower market), travel tips and resources.

THINGS TO DO IN TOURS FRANCE

Here are the best things to do and see in Tours, France

Chateau de Tours

If you’re visiting Tours, you simply can’t not be awed by the famous Loire Valley chateaux found in this city – Château de Tours, Château de La Branchoire, Château de Beaulieu, and Château de la Crouzillière, to name a few.

These beautiful old chateaux should get you started.

jardin des Prebendes

Dubbed the “Garden of France,” Tours is home to numerous parks located within the city.

The Botanical Garden, which dates to the mid-19th century, is a nice place to visit especially if you have children. There are also some animals in the gardens which make it more interesting.

Jardins des Prébendes d’Oé, with its lake, big sequoia trees, a number of quiet spots to sit and rest, and a nice little café by the main gates, is a delightful park hidden away in the city. It’s worth finding it.

Parc Honoré de Balzac, named after the famous French author – Tours’ very own – is on a man-made island. It has a play area, an animal park, and a river if you want to practice canoeing.

These are but a few of numerous parks and gardens that make Tours quite the “Garden of France.”

Cathedrale St-Gatien deTours

A must-visit when in Tours, Cathédrale Saint Gatien de Tours, also known as Tours Cathedral, is a magnificent building that’s beautiful inside and out.

Hands down the best church in Tours, it was constructed in stages from 1170 to 1547, between the Gothic and Renaissance styles. It’s definitely one of the best you’ll ever see.

The garden next door also provides the perfect view of the church towers.

Place Plumereau

Place Plumereau is the heart of Old Tours.

Situated in the center of the old quarters of the city, Place Plumereau’s main feature is the 15th-century half-timbered houses that make it such a perfect place to enjoy the medieval and local atmosphere.

The square is brimming with restaurants and cafés so you can admire the beautiful Romanesque and Renaissance façades while you sip your latte.

Musée du Compagnonnage is a small museum that showcases intricate crafts and exhibits so you can have a glimpse into how the trades developed in France.

This is a must-see museum if you want to visit the past and pay tribute to forgotten craftsman and artisans who made masterpieces with their brains and bare hands.

The trades museum is right at the end of the main shopping street so it’s very accessible.

Basilique Saint-Martin

A lovely church built over the tomb of St. Martin of Tours, Basilique Saint Martin has a very long history.

The site itself dates back to the 5th century, when the first church was built. It was completely destroyed during the French Revolution in 1793. The present church was constructed between 1886 and 1924 in a neo-Byzantine style.

It is an interesting place to visit, a definite stop whether you’re a Catholic or not. A visit to the crypt downstairs is unmissable. Go see for yourself!

Wilson Bridge

Pont Wilson was built between 1765 and 1778, making it the oldest bridge in Tours. This historical monument is named in honor of Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of the United States and an ally of France during the First World War.

Pont Wilson was destroyed by a terrible flood but has been restored to its original state since. You can tell from the high water marks just how severe the floods were in the past centuries.

A stroll across this famous bridge provides some excellent views of the city skyline on either sides, as well as the charming riverside cafés.

Garden at Musee des Beaux Arts in Tours France

… and while you’re there, go and check out the museum’s impressive collection of eclectic art!

Also, say hi to the stuffed elephant in front of the museum.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Tours houses over 12,000 works – however, only a thousand are on public show. Still a good number, though.

The giant cedar of Lebanon, the stuffed elephant, and those fine artworks inside are all masterpieces surely not to be missed when in Tours.

If you’re like me who neither has the time nor the inclination to go on a trip to the local market, well, this is your chance for a market experience while on a holiday!

There is a large flower market in the streets of Tours twice a week – Wednesdays and Saturdays.

A market that smells heavenly; what more can you ask for? Here they sell not just flowers but craft items as well, so you can also get some souvenirs while you shop for tulips and sunflowers.

And of course, photos are compulsory with all the colorful blooms around.

10. Sample the world-famous Loire Valley wines in Tours

in tour

If you love fine wine , Tours is your piece of heaven on earth. The number of AOCs (“appellation d’origine contrôlée”/”controlled designation of origin”) in and around Tours is simply insane!

The Loire Valley wine region is known for producing dry, white wines, as well as tannin-rich red wines.

So a trip to the Loire Valley without tasting its wines is committing a sin and definitely unheard of. So oenophile or not, go have a sip or two (or twenty-two) of Chenin Blanc!

Travel Insurance: I never leave home without travel insurance. My personal opinion is if you can afford to travel, you can afford to buy a travel insurance. All things can happen while on the road and you can never be too sure. And it's something that you'll be glad to have when you need it. For my preferred travel insurance, I use Safety Wing .

In This Moment + Black Veil Brides Announce Joint 2021 North American Tour

In This Moment and Black Veil Brides will band together for The In-Between Tour this fall, the trek covering the United States from September to November.

As reported on Monday (May 17) by Revolver , the tour, first scheduled for 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic shuttered most large live events, features supporting artists in Ded and Raven Black .

See all the dates down toward the bottom of this post.

Taking its name from the lead single (" The In-Between ") from In This Moment's latest album, 2020's Mother , the 45-date tour kicks off in Lincoln, Neb., on Sept. 17 before winding up in Atlanta eight weeks later. Seeing as how the pandemic kept both bands from playing out until now, it will mark the first time that In This Moment can debut much of their Mother material in concert.

Black Veil Brides last year reimagined their debut, Re-Stitch These Wounds , in a re-recorded update, but the proper follow-up to their 2018 set  Vale   arrives later this year — it's called The Phantom Tomorrow .

Tickets for the tour go on sale this Friday (May 21).

Rory McIlroy knows how to party.

The Northern Irish golf star celebrated a victory at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event on Sunday by chugging a Michelob ULTRA and belting out the lyrics to “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey with a live band in front of a rocking audience of golf fans.

The PGA Tour posted the video to its social media channels following the tournament win for McIlroy and his teammate Shane Lowry at TPC Louisiana.

The duo defeated Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff to capture the Zurich Classic and McIlroy won his 25th PGA Tour title and first of the season.

McIlroy hit a brilliant pitch on the 72nd hole to set up a short Lowry birdie putt to force a playoff in what is the PGA Tour’s lone team event of the season.

Trainer missed a six-foot par putt that allowed McIlroy and Lowry the win and set off a boozy celebration on Sunday.

“To win any PGA Tour event is very cool, but to do it with one of your closest friends — we’ve known each other for a long, long time, probably like over 20 years,” McIlroy said, per the Associated Press. “To think about where we met and where we’ve come from, to be on this stage and do this together — really, really cool journey that we’ve been a part of.”

In another video posted by the PGA Tour, the two are seen walking through a parking lot after the victory led by a New Orleans-style brass band after the win.

Rory McIlroy chugs a beer during a karaoke session.

A separate video shows McIlroy on a stage chugging a beer in front of a large gathering of golf fans.

“People have come out in the thousands to support us. It’s not lost on me how cool that is,” McIlroy said about the crowds that followed during the tournament. “Every time I get to play in front of thousands of people, the little boy in me just thinks it’s so cool and so exciting.”

It was a fitting celebration given McIlroy previously told Claire Rogers of Golf.com that he asked Lowry to partner together at a “really drunken lunch” after the Ryder Cup.

Lowry had previously teamed with Padraig Harrington, who now plays on the Champions Tour.

Tyler, The Creator

I have been a fan of Tyler for a long time, as well as the whole group of OFWGKTA, and seeing him live was something I had on my bucket list. I went in with high expectations for his show, already knowing of how much energy and enthusiasm he puts into his live performances. What I got at The Forum went above and beyond anything I could have hoped for. The crowd was amazing, knowing every song and shouting and yelling along with unrivaled amounts of energy. Tyler was just as, or even more, energetic and knew how to work the crowd perfectly by interaction, be it between moments talking about random things or talking about his music and singing. I was blown away by the fact that at least twice he called to stop the song just to start it again because he loved how into it the crowd was and wanted to see it again. Of course we, the crowd, loved it and drained our lungs out with every lyric. I've seen the Arctic Monkeys, Sleigh Bells, Banks, Pendulum, Wolf Alice and others and can honestly say Tyler was the best overall. Everyone exited the venue with shirts soaked in sweat and with cracking voices, with grins on their face from having experienced something they'd never forget. If you like Tyler, or by extension OFWGKTA, you have to see him live if you get the opportunity, you can never anticipate how godly his live performances will be. I will definitely be waiting for his next visit to see him again.

HAIM delivered everything I expected at this show, and more! This band has so many different things going for it, that it is hard not to see them having a long successful career. As a matter of fact, in the music business of old, when there were not 10 zillion bands out there, HAIM would be playing arenas and probably making Fleetwood Mac kind of money…The Wiltern isn't the best sounding venue for sure, but HAIM overcame this and totally kicked ass, playing the tunes off of "DAYS ARE GONE" with passion and skill. As good as they all are, (and special kudos also to drummer Dash and keyboardist Tommy) it is hard not to focus on Danielle Haim and her major rock star charisma. It doesn't hurt that she rips it up on guitar and is a pretty kick ass drummer too…All in all, HAIM was amazing, and I would go back tonight if I could get a ticket...

The. Best. Night. Of. My. Entire. Life. This was the second time for me to see Adele. Last time I was quite high up, this time I was in Golden Circle. The atmosphere was incredible, Adele made me feel like I was the only one there in a packed out stadium. The banter she has with her audience in hilarious, she includes everyone and t feels like you're hanging out with your best mate you've known for years. As for her songs, the emotion and passion she sings with is just so raw and heart warming, I cried so many tears. You can tell she has an absolute ball on stage and she has so many upbeat songs and the sass she has is unreal- it cracks me up every time! I feel so grateful to have been apart of this tour and so happy that Adele decided to share this experience with every single one of us. I hope she has the most relaxing break with her family and hope she knows we'll always be here for her whenever/ if she decides to come back. Xx

Absolutely incredible! The music sounded amazing live, not like anything I've heard before. Jónsi Birgisson's voice is incredible live also, even earning applause from the crowd for the length of some of the notes he pulled off. The visuals were stunning. The lights and background of the stage were beautiful. Overall a wonderful experience and will absolutely be seeing them again if I get the opportunity!

A mind-blowing live personality, a revelation! A huge spontaneous crush! Power, cheekiness, everything that can reinstate one in the love for women and music. A never again to be missed!

Julia Jacklin

Julia’s assertive charm comes across in both her music and her on stage presence, the only difference being she is funnier in between her songs in which she contemplates what it means to be a woman viewed through her own lens, that of the men she’s loved, and of a perspective that shift as time goes on. Her voice is powerful and note perfect and especially enjoyable when she closed the show with an April Lavigne cover.

Music artists

For new users looking to follow their favorite bands and performers, our Artists pages are often the best place to start.

Whether you're on our site, or using our free app for iPhone and Android, the Songkick artists search engine is the fastest and simplest way to keep track of who's doing what right now. Be the first to learn which acts are touring, when they might be playing a venue near you, and how to get tickets for any future shows you like the sound of.

Looking to discover someone new? Hey, you’re our kind of music fan. That's why we've also included upcoming Live Stream Concerts alongside our artist searches, meaning you can easily schedule a more casual drop-in from the comfort of your couch.

Since launching our first app back in 2007, you guys - the fans, the concert-goers, the musical explorers - have been at the very heart of everything we do here. Our dream and our drive was always to bring Songkick members closer than ever before to the sounds they love, and the people who create them. Simply put, we pride ourselves on being your direct link to the greatest music artists on the planet.

Who are they, exactly? Well, according to our members, that changes almost by the hour...so let's talk about how Songkick keeps you in the loop.

Best live artists

A quick glance at our Most Popular Artists chart might tell you a few key things about the sorts of music fans we vibe with. For starters, it shows just how varied our members' tastes are. Pop, rock, dance, hip-hop, indie/alt and R&B all feature heavily, alongside a whole bunch of underground genres and rising scenes.

No two of you are quite the same - and frankly, we love to see it! Any time you check in, our 'most popular artists worldwide' and 'trending artists this week' leaderboards always read like a line-up for the greatest, most diverse live festival on Earth.

Among the top searches and best-selling music artists on our global roster, you might find anyone from Rhianna, Coldplay, Eminem and Ed Sheeran, through to Drake, U2, Kanye West,

Maroon 5, Beyoncé, The Midnight, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, Imagine Dragons, Justin Bieber - and that's barely looking outside the top 20.

After all, if the weekly race for a spot on our most popular charts tells us anything, it's that the whole concept of 'best live bands' is a tricky one to pin down. Everybody's looking for a completely different type of experience, every night of the year.

That's another thing we love about our users: you're incredible at keeping us on our toes. In return, we’ve made it our mission to help keep you on yours.

Find and follow your favorite artists on Songkick

When people talk about the 'best live bands in the world', a few big names will reliably come up time and time again. Just as crucially, there'll always be a good handful of newcomers, hot tips and total curveballs in there too.

For us and our members alike, that's a huge part of what keeps the live concert scene so fresh and exciting. There's nothing quite like the thrill of discovering a new favorite artist you'd previously never even heard of - and when that discovery involves a performer blowing you away with an incredible live show or streamed concert, the feeling is enhanced tenfold.

Songkick started out with the goal of helping you capture that moment as often as possible. Now, more than a decade into this, it's 100% what we're still about today.

New members visiting our site or downloading the app can use our powerful search tools to stay ahead of the game. Simply log in with a user profile to keep tabs on more than 6 million bands, shows, festivals and live streams. By joining them, you'll be sharing a platform with 15 million fellow music fans worldwide, all using Songkick to:

Cheapest destinations to see Taylor Swift concerts from 'Eras Tour' abroad

Are you a Florida Swiftie with “Eras Tour” FOMO?

It’s definitely too late to find a ticket to Taylor Swift’s October concerts in Miami for less than $2,000.

But you can see an “Eras Tour” show in Warsaw, Poland, on Aug. 1, 2024, for about $500 cheaper than the cheapest concert ticket for a Miami show in October (including a roundtrip plane ticket to Poland, from Miami ).

Travel website Islands.com just released a study on the cheapest overseas destinations for seeing Miss Americana on the European leg of her tour.

To calculate the cheapest overseas shows on Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” this summer, Islands.com aggregated data on each city to find the average most affordable concert tickets, the average cost for two days of spending on hotel rooms, meals, drinks and transportation in each city and each city's safety score.

Here’s the Islands.com list of the cheapest shows on the next leg of Taylor Swift’s tour and how much the cheapest plane tickets from Florida to the cheapest European concert are.

Does “The Eras Tour” come to Europe?

Yes! After a wildly successful first run of “The Eras Tour” in the U.S. in 2023, Taylor Swift extended her tour to an international one and will start performing in Europe this summer before returning for more U.S. shows in the fall.

Here’s Islands.com’s list of the Top 10 cheapest places to see Taylor Swift in Europe this summer, including two days’ worth of hotel, food, drink and transportation costs for each city:

  • Warsaw, Poland: $443 cheapest concert ticket price, $712 total lowest average cost
  • Gelsenkirchen, Germany: $387 cheapest concert ticket price, $749 total lowest average cost
  • Hamburg, Germany: $411 cheapest concert ticket price, $903 total lowest average cost
  • Stockholm, Sweden: $406 cheapest concert ticket price, $935 total lowest average cost
  • Paris, France: $313 cheapest concert ticket price, $971 total lowest average cost
  • Munich, Germany: $472 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,000 total lowest average cost
  • Lisbon, Portugal: $507 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,028 total lowest average cost
  • Lyon, France: $582 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,047 total lowest average cost
  • Cardiff, UK: $679 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,061 total lowest average cost
  • Vienna , Austria: $496 cheapest concert ticket price, $1,089 total lowest average cost

Does Taylor Swift perform in Poland?

Yes! Taylor Swift will be performing for three nights in Warsaw, from Thursday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 3.

The cheapest ticket to see Taylor Swift perform in Warsaw, Poland in August is about $1,500 cheaper than the cheapest ticket to catch one of her Miami shows in October.

As of April, via Google Flights, you can buy a roundtrip plane ticket from Miami to Warsaw (with two layovers) for around $800 .

Add that $800 plane ticket to the around $500 it will cost for a concert ticket and the extra $200 to $300 you’ll spend in two days of visiting Warsaw, and the grand total comes out to a maximum of around $1,600, which is still $400 cheaper than the cheapest ticket to a Miami show.

The Rolling Stones setlist: Here are all the songs on their Hackney Diamonds Tour

in tour

It doesn’t matter that both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are 80.

As long as they’re sharing a stage, the Rolling Stones will continue to defy age and energy.

The band’s 16-city stadium sprint – sponsored, appropriately, by AARP – kicked off April 28 at NRG Stadium in Houston and will play through July 17 in Santa Clara, California. In between, the Rolling Stones will visit cities including Las Vegas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago.

In October, the band released “Hackney Diamonds,” their first new album since 2005. For this complementary tour, Jagger, Richards and Ronnie Wood – along with durable supporting players Chuck Leavell, Darryl Jones, Matt Clifford, Karl Denson, Tim Ries, Steve Jordan (who assumed rhythm duties after the 2021 death of original drummer Charlie Watts ) and background vocalists Bernard Fowler and Chanel Haynes – shined on stage for two hours.

The 18-song set was stuffed with iconic rock anthems including “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Start Me Up,” and “Miss You”, along with a smattering of new songs from “Hackney,” including the Grammy-nominated “ Angry .”

Stadiums, which the band has played for nearly 50 years, still suit their blues-splattered rock and indefatigable frontman Jagger, who still slithers effortless, remains an undisputed legend.

18 Best Things To Do in Indianapolis

Updated January 13, 2023

Besides the Indianapolis Motor Speedway  and Hall of Fame Museum (which is a must-see for most visitors), the city offers the truly wonderful Newfields that's home to the  Indianapolis Museum of Art . If you're traveling with kids in tow,

White River State Park White River State Park free

Anchoring the west side of Indianapolis, the White River State Park offers 250 acres of green space dotted with memorials and museums as the Central Canal and the White River offer waterways in the park. The White River bisects the park from north-to-south. On the west side of the river sits the Indianapolis Zoo , which can be accessed by the White River Pedestrian Bridge. On the east side, you'll find the Indiana State Museum , the Eiteljorg Museum  and the Military Park. Additionally, Victory Field is within White River State Park, providing visitors and locals a chance to relax and catch a baseball game. Want to get active? The park features five walking and biking trails (fully paved), like the Canal Walk and Cultural Trail, the River Promenade and Waterfront Trail.

As the central park in Indianapolis, most find it close to many attractions and hotels. Recent visitors were amazed by White River State Park, and one recent visitor called it a "treasure." Some explored the park on foot, while others rented bikes or kayaks. If you plan on driving, note that parking entrances can be hard to find, according to past visitors.

Central Canal Central Canal free

In the 1830s, the Indiana state government conceived a plan to build a 296-mile waterway through the state to increase commerce. Though the Central Canal never came to full fruition, sections of the canal were developed. Today, the Canal Walk – a refurbished portion of the Central Canal – is a 3-mile loop that flows by the Indiana State Museum  and  Eiteljorg Museum , among other popular attractions. You can walk alongside the canal or rent of the bikes from the two different Pacers Bikeshare Stations along the canal. If it’s a special occasion, hire a singing gondolier or rent a pedal boat or kayak.

Whatever mode of transport you choose, you'll enjoy a spectacular view of the Indianapolis skyline, not to mention a 17-foot waterfall, some of the city's best contemporary architecture, and the USS Indianapolis Memorial and Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial. Keep your eye out for colorful murals on the canal underpasses, too. According to recent reviewers, this is the spot for quiet relaxation in Indy. Aside from the peaceful atmosphere, travelers also love how clean the area is. Other visitors were delighted when they found the Central Canal by accident on their trip.

Newfields Newfields

Spread out across 152 acres, Newfields is a complex dedicated to the arts and nature including gardens, a green house, a nature park and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Featuring more than 50,000 works of art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art is an impressive institution. Not only does the IMA offer an impressive collection of neoimpressionist paintings and Asian art, but it also boasts one of the largest contemporary art parks in the U.S. Stroll through Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park for an acclaimed outdoor space that features a 35-acre lake and art installations set amidst woodlands and wetlands. While you're outside, consider visiting the Lilly House and The Gardens, an early 1900s French-inspired estate that is a National Historic Landmark.

Recent visitors highly recommended including Newfields your itinerary and said it was a great way to spend a day in Indy. Some particularly loved the gardens and the special events and exhibits, like the harvest and holiday displays.

Eiteljorg Museum Eiteljorg Museum

If you're interested in learning more about the art, history and cultures of the American West and Native Americans, then a stop at the Eiteljorg Museum is a must. Another selling point: The Eiteljorg Museum is the only museum of its kind stationed in the Midwest, and one of only two museums east of the Mississippi that explore both Native America and American West art.

Its permanent collection includes works from Andy Warhol, T.C. Cannon, Georgia O’Keefe and Frederic Remington, among many others. But the real star is the museum's collection of contemporary Native art, which has been ranked among the world's best. And then there are the special exhibitions, which have covered subjects like the history and development of contemporary Native art. Plus, each year the museum hosts the Indian Market and Festival

Spanning 472,900 square feet and boasting 11 galleries, the Children's Museum of Indianapolis lives up to its title as the world's largest children's museum. Exhibits at the highly praised facility include a planetarium, the "Dinosphere: Now You're in Their World" (featuring eight different species) and the "National Geographic Treasures of the Earth" exhibit, which showcases re-creations of three archaeological sites, including an Egyptian tomb, a pirate shipwreck and China's Terra Cotta Warriors. Beyond these standouts, there are also several more floors of exhibits and even some Chihuly glass for decoration. Plus, the museum boasts an impressive 12,500-year-old mastodon skeleton and a carousel. Seasonal outdoor exhibits about sports are also available.

Indiana War Memorial Plaza Indiana War Memorial Plaza free

Considered an historic district, the Indiana War Memorial Plaza comprises Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Indiana World War Memorial and Museum, University Park, American Legion Mall, Veteran's Memorial Plaza and USS Indianapolis CA35 Memorial. In all, the historic district offers 25 acres dedicated to the veterans. So, if you're a fan of the National Mall in Washington, D.C ., you'll likely enjoy spending a few hours here. In fact, Indianapolis is second only to D.C. in acreage and number of monuments and memorials dedicated to veterans.

With its 30,000 square-feet, you'll want to spend the majority of your time in the Indiana War Memorial Museum, especially the Shrine Room. Described by recent visitors as "breathtaking" and "peaceful," the Shrine Room is dedicated to fallen soldiers of World War I and features materials hailing from around the globe, which symbolizes the worldwide effort it took to end the war. The main floor showcases the history of Indiana's veterans, from the Battle of Tippecanoe through the present. Among the artifacts on display are the USS Indianapolis gallery, military firearms and uniforms, and an AH-1 Cobra Attack Helicopter.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been around since 1909, and every Memorial Day weekend drivers start their engines for the Indianapolis 500: 200 laps around the famed 2.5-mile oval. This epic track is actually on the National Register of Historic Places. With a host of racing events throughout the year, there's more to see than the Indy 500. Other races include the GMR Grand Prix, Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational and the NASCAR Cup Series.

Also at the complex is the 37,500-square-foot Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Located inside the famous oval track, the museum was established in 1956 to showcase the importance of motorsports. The museum features over 25 cars that have won the Indianapolis 500 along with additional cars (some antique), photographs, racing memorabilia and even fine art depicting racing. The Tony Hulman Theatre shows an 8-minute film about the track. Visitors have the choice to see the complex by purchasing race tickets, visiting only the museum or taking the very popular (and comprehensive) grounds tour.

With the capacity to hold 67,000 fans and a retractable roof that features unbeatable views of the downtown Indianapolis skyline, visitors consistently describe the stadium (which opened in 2008 and hosted the 2012 Super Bowl) as a "beautiful sports venue." The Colts regular season runs mid-September until mid-January with preseason games starting in the end of August. Highlights for recent guests were the underwater dolphin viewing dome in Oceans (be sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before start time) and the orangutan center. The zoo also offers special zoo experiences (not included in admission) ranging from swimming with dolphins to watching a zoo animal paint a work of art (that you get to take home).

Recent visitors raved about the zoo and noted that it was clean and the guides were friendly. Neil Young and Crazy Horse 2024 tour setlist: Every song they played at Phoenix concert

in tour

Neil Young brought Crazy Horse to Phoenix for the first since 2003, when the Greendale Tour played what we now call Arizona Financial Theatre.

Saturday’s show at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre was in support of "FU##IN’ UP," a new release that captures Young and Crazy Horse in all their ragged glory.

And they treated Phoenix to a show that put the spotlight on the staples that have made Young one of rock ‘n’ roll's most celebrated elder statesmen, setting the tone with an epic performance of “Cortez the Killer” that lasted roughly 15 minutes.

By the time they brought the concert to a cacophonous conclusion with the glorious racket of “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" and a one-song encore of "Danger Bird," Young and Crazy Horse had powered their way through such classics as “Cinnamon Girl,” “Don’t Cry No Tears” and “Powderfinger.”

Young also took a break from the distortion and his bandmates for a three-song unplugged mini-set, including “Comes a Time” and “Heart of Gold,” before the night was through.

Concert review: Neil Young and Crazy Horse scaled heights of ragged glory in transcendent Phoenix concert

Trump’s trial is the latest chapter in the rich history of Lower Manhattan’s courts.

A cluster of downtown buildings has served as the borough’s “epicenter of criminal justice in New York since the 1830s,” said a lawyer who has led walking tours of Manhattan courthouses.

A plaza with the State Supreme Court building behind it.

By Matthew Mpoke Bigg

  • April 26, 2024

For a decade, Robert Pigott, a lawyer, has led walking tours of the courthouses of Manhattan, guiding visitors around landmarks where the city’s rich legal history has played out. Now the trial of Donald J. Trump has added a chapter to the story he gets to tell.

Mr. Pigott’s tours, which he runs in his spare time, revolve around a cluster of downtown buildings that are the borough’s judicial hub. For now, 100 Centre Street — the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse, where the former president’s case is being heard — is the focus.

But just down the street on Foley Square sits Manhattan’s most elegant courthouse building, New York’s Supreme Court, with its sweeping flight of 32 stone steps leading up to a series of imposing Corinthian columns. Other court buildings are dotted around nearby.

“The eyes of the nation and the world are trained on criminal court cases in New York County, whether it’s organized crime, Wall Street cases or federal cases,” Mr. Pigott said.

Mr. Trump’s trial is remarkable because it is the first time that a former American president has been criminally prosecuted. The defendant’s status as this year’s presumptive Republican presidential nominee adds a contemporary political dimension.

For Mr. Pigott, 64, who has written a book about the history of the city’s courthouses, the real significance is what it says about the status of a few blocks of Manhattan as a nexus. He pointed out that Mr. Trump’s civil fraud case and defamation case also both played out this year in courthouses within spitting distance of the criminal trial.

“Now, when I arrive at the expanse of Foley Square midway through the walk, I can point to something truly remarkable — three different courthouses where the same former U.S. president has been on trial,” he said.

Mr. Trump’s trial shows how politics, celebrity and the location of the court itself can reinforce one another to make a big story bigger. New York’s status as a media hub increases the spotlight during high-profile cases and the high-profile cases held over the decades have, in turn, made the city’s courts an attractive setting for fictional courtroom dramas.

In these buildings, a jury convicted Anna Sorokin for grand larceny in 2019 for posing as a German heiress to swindle wealthy New Yorkers — a case that almost by definition blurred fact and fiction. Naturally, the tale has since been turned into a series on Netflix.

The cluster is also where a group of Black and Latino teenagers, then known as the Central Park Five, were wrongly convicted in 1990 of raping a jogger — a case also rendered as a Netflix series — and where Mark David Chapman pleaded guilty in 1981 to murdering the musician John Lennon.

The New York Supreme Court building, a trial-level court, often serves as a symbol of the court complex. It featured prominently in the television show “Law and Order" and the 1957 courtroom film classic “12 Angry Men,” to cite just two examples.

Mr. Pigott, however, is drawn to the history of the legal system before the 20th century and how it evolved through its buildings. The first stop on the tours he runs is a sidewalk nearby with glass blocks embedded in it, through which it is possible to see the excavations of a courthouse built by the Dutch in the colonial era.

The authorities in New York built a judicial infrastructure in this part of Lower Manhattan starting mainly in the 19th century, when the area experienced significant gang violence, he said.

“This one-block radius has been the epicenter of criminal justice in New York since the 1830s,” said Mr. Pigott.

For all the drama associated with the Trump trial, the streets outside the criminal courthouse have generally been calm this week. Reporters and members of the public have lined up for entry to the courthouse. And on Thursday morning, Collect Pond Park across the street, which has been designated for protests, was empty. Its only occupants were some police officers and a few pigeons.
