Spot the big five on your safari adventure.

Safari tours in Africa are just as diverse as the continent itself, though these types of trips typically require a large sum of money. Whether you want to spend a few days gorilla trekking in Uganda or a couple weeks spotting the "big five" – lions, leopards, African elephants, rhinos and Cape buffalos – in South Africa, you'll find an array of tours to best suit your needs. To help you narrow down your options, U.S. News compiled a list of 12 can't-miss African safari tours. Read on to find your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Note: Some of the African countries in this article may require travelers to get an entry visa and certain vaccinations in order to visit. Jump to the list of visa and vaccination requirements by country at the bottom of this page for more information.

&Beyond

Visitors who don't want to sacrifice creature comforts while on safari will appreciate &Beyond's offerings. During the tour operator's 10-day Kings of the Jungle safari – which starts at $11,340 per person – travelers will see breathtaking natural wonders like the Ngorongoro Crater and the Maasai Mara savanna. But the highlight of this journey is its four-night stay at Tanzania's Serengeti National Park . After watching animals like wildebeest and zebras partake in the great migration while also spotting lions, giraffes and more, vacationers retreat to high-end tents and lodges with private bathrooms.

Wilderness Safaris

For some of Africa's most jaw-dropping scenery, opt for the seven-night Namibian Adventure Safari tour offered by Wilderness Safaris. This weeklong trip features visits to the Namib Desert's dune-filled Sossusvlei region (which you may recognize from the film "Mad Max: Fury Road") and the mountainous Palmwag Concession – a protected area with springboks, giraffes, black rhinos and more. The package's per person fee starts at $6,725, which covers most meals, park entrance fees, and transfers from Namibia's capital Windhoek and between the safari destinations. It also covers your stay at properties like the fully solar-powered Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and the five-star Little Kulala lodge amid the stunning desert.

Wild Rwanda Safaris

Adventurous travelers sticking to a more conservative budget should consider Wild Rwanda Safaris' Bwindi Gorilla Safari. The three-day package features a full day in southwestern Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (a haven for silverback gorillas) and an adjacent Batwa Pygmy community. Wild Rwanda Safaris allows guests to choose between midrange, luxury and super luxury accommodation, which can help keep costs down if necessary. The company's packages include the $700 permit required to visit the gorilla park. The round-trip journey by safari vehicle to and from Kigali, Rwanda, and English-speaking guide services are also covered in all rates. The tour can begin from Kampala, Uganda, as well, although you'll spend longer on the road to the park.

Nomad Tanzania

African Safari in Tanzania

Sign up for Nomad Tanzania's Southern Tanzania safari and you're bound to get an up-close look at Tanzania's diverse wildlife. Offering eight days of activities, including game drives and boat trips in Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park, this safari gives you prime opportunities to spot lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants, among other species. What's more, lodging at the company's campsites, select meals, and flights to and from Dar es Salaam are factored into the package's prices. Expect to pay a minimum of $5,700 per person; prices vary depending on the time of year, and the tour isn't offered in April and May.

Micato Safaris

If you want to explore multiple destinations while on safari with plenty of comfort (but a price tag to match), book the 15-day Micato Grand Safari. This outing by Micato Safaris starts with a two-day visit to Nairobi, Kenya, before continuing to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the Amboseli and Serengeti national parks for wildlife-viewing excursions. During your trip, you'll see Mount Kilimanjaro as zebras, gazelles and more roam in the foreground. The package costs at least $22,450 per person (based on double occupancy rates) and includes a hot air balloon ride, a camel tour led by members of the Samburu tribe, and lodging at upscale properties like Serengeti's Four Seasons outpost. The company also offers various extensions allowing you to explore other parts of Africa, from the island paradise of Zanzibar to the deserts of Namibia.

Rothschild Safaris

If your ideal safari vacation consists of customizing your trip from start to finish, consider an outing with Rothschild Safaris. The company offers itineraries in locales like Zambia and Madagascar , but if you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the big five animals, the Essence of Tanzania safari is a good bet. This nine-day experience, which embarks from Arusha and returns there by plane, includes game-viewing drives in Tarangire National Park and accommodations like canvas tents and farmhouse lodges. Elephants, zebras and lions are just some of the animals you may spot during your journey. You'll also have the opportunity to go on a nighttime safari to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Lion World Travel

As the trip name implies, Lion World Travel's 10-day Best of Cape Town & Botswana vacation package combines sightseeing in Cape Town, South Africa , with a classic safari in Botswana. During the latter half of the itinerary, visitors will explore Botswana's Okavango Delta (home to cheetahs, crocodiles, hippos and more) and Chobe National Park, which is believed to have Africa's largest elephant population. Prices start at $4,299 per person and cover game drives; many of your meals; and stays at luxury hotels, camps and lodges. You'll need to pay an extra charge for the flights within the tour (Cape Town to Botswana as well as Botswana to Johannesburg ).

Discover Africa

For an inside-out trip through the natural wonders of Botswana, Discover Africa's nine-day Epic Botswana Adventure is a formidable option. You'll start out at a riverside lodge on the Chobe River – a great location for elephant spotting – before moving onto the marshy Okavango Delta, a wildlife-rich area where you can spot a huge range of animals from leopards to rhinos. The safari ends at the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, a good place to admire wildlife like zebras and buffalo on the savanna as well as salt pans from a former lake. You'll stay in upscale lodges and campsites within close reach of the wilderness. All meals and transport along the tour are included in the price tag (which starts at $4,800 per person), but international flights are excluded.

Wild Wings Safaris

africa world tours

If you're looking to have a broader experience that mixes in some history and beach time, consider Wild Wings Safaris' eight-day Battlefields, Bush and Beach Safari. You'll start off visiting some of South Africa's historic sites from the Boer wars, before moving on to the Phinda Private Game Reserve, which doesn't allow day visitors, so you should be able to look out for the big five without too many crowds. The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Cuckoo Safaris

Aerial few of the world famous Victoria Falls with a large rainbow over the falls. This is right at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The mighty Victoria Falls at Zambezi river are one of the most visited touristic places in Africa.

This tour company kicks off its tours from the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, with a host of safaris that range from two days to nine, across Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, including some family-friendly choices. For an affordable option, there's the four-day Discover Victoria Falls, Chobe and Hwange Park safari, which will take you on two full-day tours to Chobe National Park (across the border in Botswana) and to Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest national park, where you should keep your eyes peeled for lions, elephants and more. This safari also includes a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River. The price starts at $900 per person, which includes the tours plus breakfast, lunch and lodging in Victoria Falls; travelers will need to pay for entrance fees to the parks and dinner.

Compass Odyssey

Explore the savanna and deserts of southwest Africa with Compass Odyssey's eight-day Namibia Wildlife Safari. You'll visit a community-based conservation area in Damaraland – known for its desert-adapted elephants, oryx, giraffes and other wildlife – while staying in the rustic-chic Doro Nawas Camp. You'll also spend two days in Etosha National Park, seeking wildlife at the park's bustling waterholes by day and embarking on an evening game drive as well. Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Africa Tours & Vacations

Elephant herd with 3 young calves walking across the Serengeti on a dusty day

Surrender to the lure of Africa and its diverse wildlife, thousands of cultures and breathtaking landscapes.

Meaning ‘to travel’ in Arabic and Swahili, the word ‘safari’ can describe many types of epic adventure in Africa. There is the ancient Egypt kind – discovering the lost city of Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings. The nomadic one – veering away from Morocco’s souqs and medinas and being hosted by a Berber family in the Sahara. The local village version – cherishing moments with Maasai , San, and Malagasy cultures. The wildlife way – search for the Big Five in any number of game reserves and parks: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kruger, and Lake Nakuru, to name a few. What does your African adventure look like?

What travelers are saying about our Africa tours

Travel tips for africa trips.

The best time for a trip to Africa depends on what you want to see during your vacation. The temperature is warm year-round, but the seasons affect both weather patterns and animal migrations across the continent. Because Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, seasons are opposite those of North America—that means that during the summer months in North America, it’s winter in Africa.

Our Africa tour packages are designed to take you to the best sites at the ideal time of year. In general, you will want to visit Africa during the dry season, which differs from region to region. July through October is the best time for a safari in Tanzania or Kenya, with cooler temps and animal migrations happening across the Serengeti and Masai Mara. African tours that take you to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Cape Town are best from April to October, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for safari game drives or city sightseeing. In the deserts of Morocco and Egypt, the climate is very hot and dry; plan to visit Northern Africa in spring or fall when the weather is most pleasant.

A trip to Africa can mean anything from a wildlife safari to sipping a crisp white wine at a vineyard. When you travel with us, you’ll experience all the best places to visit in Africa alongside an expert Tour Director and local guides—which means you can get the most out of your trip, no matter where you go.

On Safari Tours you’ll experience game drives in wildlife-rich destinations like the Serengeti and Hwange National Park. Snap photos of the Big Five from your safari vehicle, and experience untouched Africa in handpicked hotels that put you at the heart of the action.

If you’re looking for a mix of city and wildlife, one of our Africa guided tours to Cape Town is the perfect fit. Want to visit excellent vineyards and Africa’s best coastal cities? The beaches and vineyards around Cape Town, Knysna, and Port Elizabeth definitely fit the bill.

For Africa tours and travel filled with culture and history, you’ll want to see the Highlights of Morocco or Ancient Egypt . You can explore the Sahara on camelback and browse colorful souks or stand beside the Great Pyramids of Giza and see the Great Sphinx. We make it easy to get closer to local culture and see the important landmarks because our carefully planned itineraries are crafted with these moments in mind.

There is no one dish that defines African cuisine. In Morocco, influences from Mediterranean, Arab, and Andalusian cultures can be found in the range of spices that flavor every meal. Traditional dishes include tagine —a stew made with beef, chicken, or lamb and vegetables—and couscous. Egyptian cuisine is also heavily influenced by Mediterranean flavors, and the Nile Valley produces an abundance of legumes and vegetables. Try shawarma and kebab , two meat dishes that are popular throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East.

In Kenya and Tanzania, cuisine is very tied to what is locally available—depending on where you are, you’ll find very different dishes! On our African tours, meals in your game lodges reflect Britain’s colonial influence. Curries and spicy foods are also popular, thanks to Indian and South Asian immigrants who call the region home.

South African food is called “rainbow cuisine” because of its multicultural influences. South Africa is also a very popular wine region, and produces some of the world’s best white wines.

Our escorted tours to Africa visit many different regions, which means a diverse range of cuisines to try!

On any tours around Africa, expect hot, sunny weather during the day and the chance for cooler temps at night. You’ll want loose-fitting, layered clothing for a range of temperatures, as well as sun protection, including a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses. If you are traveling in Morocco and Egypt, remember to pack modest clothing that can keep you covered during visits to mosques or other religious sites. You may also want to pack lightweight rainwear, as occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons.

If you are packing for a safari, it’s recommended you wear muted colors to avoid scaring away animals. Safari luggage restrictions are strongly enforced to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort aboard safari vehicles. You will need to bring a soft, flexible duffel bag as hard suitcases are not allowed.

Of course, once you’ve reserved your trip to Africa, we’ll send you detailed information about getting ready for your travels—including more packing tips!

Its name means “sunny place” in the Berber tongue, but “Africa” may as well be a synonym for “vastness.” A truly massive continent comprising over 20% of the planet’s available land, Africa is home to the world’s largest desert, its longest river, its hottest temperatures, and hundreds of dialects and cultures spread among a billion people. Reviews of Africa Tours

We really enjoyed this tour. Very organized, sticking to schedule. They were very communicative throughout the whole tour, always open to questions. We were very lucky to be a very small group (3 of us) it was great honestly. Safety was a big concern for us, and we are very glad we felt safe throughout the entire length of our stay. Upon arrival, we were met by our transport guy, he had already communicated prior to our arrival. The van was in good condition, comfortable and more importantly had A/C (in fact, all transport vans were comfortable, in great shape, and had great A/C). We met with Ahmed (Harry) and everything was explained to us, check in was a breeze. The hotel (Tolip Plaza) was alright, please don't expect too much, its ok based on the time you'll be staying there. There are several places to eat and hangout around the hotel - walking distance. Don't be scared, give it a try, specially the spot called Hookah (great hookah and really good chicken tenders with great customer service). We toured the Old Cairo and Museum of Civilization. Our guide (please forgive us, I cannot remember his name) was very knowledgeable, friendly, and chatty. Our guide for the pyramids was great too, very knowledgeable, friendly, and chatty (funny older gentleman). We loved our cruising on the Nile. We sailed on Royal Olivia (you can tell is an older boat) again don't expect no 5 stars boat because you'll be disappointed. The boat was alright, the staff was very attentive, especially the guys at the bar. The back glass door open giving the feeling of a balcony, depending on how low your deck is, the closer you'll be to experiencing the boat hustlers (or pirates, how we called them). It was all a great experience. Our guide through the Nile and most of the tour was Mahmoud, again friendly, chatty, informative, approachable; all types of great. The cruise offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner but ONLY at selected times. It functions for about 1.30 hours and there is no food available in between those times. MUST KNOW: the food was the biggest downfall of our experience, all through Egypt. We got stomach sick for most of the days because our stomach wouldn't agree with the food. Please come prepare (brings your pills, powders, anything that will help calm your tummy, or make it feel better. If you chose to bring neck fans, I honestly believe you will be wasting your time and money, because the heat is too much, unless you can get a fan that blows air with ice (good look finding ice to use on that). PLEASE PLEASE bring sunscreen with you! PLEASE PLEASE bring a hat with you, or anything you chose to cover your eyes/head from the sun (especially if you wear glasses - the sun will kill you. I learned the hard way). Throughout the tour you will experience the street hustlers that do not know anything about boundaries and personal space. They will be naggy, and it will get to a point that it will become upsetting to you..do not let that ruin your day, your experience. Ignore them, and carry on!!!!!! Upon arrival you will have to pay a set amount per person for tips (like $160 or $180 per person) that is to cover tips for the guides and the cruise staff, which is not a bad deal for the amount of days and attention they provide. Please know that you can pay for upgrades, ask if interested. Also, Uber works in Egypt (dirt cheap), don't be afraid to visit other areas like restaurants if inclined to. When booking this tour, I would recommend that you book the one that flights from Cairo to Luxor rather than the one that goes from Cairo to Aswan. I'll explain, flying into Luxor gives you and extra days on the boat (total of 5 days) activities are not as rushed, as it will feel if you flight to Aswan (pretty much doing the same activities but in 4 days instead). When having early day/morning activities you will be getting breakfast boxes/bags containing cold cuts sandwiches, yogurt, fruits (we couldn't eat it) just be mentally prepared and also have your stomach ready. RECCOMMENDATIONS FOR THE TOUR ADMINISTRATORS: for cold water (beverages in general) to be provided during tours (cost included in the tour price). On the last day of the cruise, why book a flight back to Cairo (at least from Aswan) so late (at around 8pm), when we had finished our activities that day at around noon (more or less). We sat on the boat for hours without anything to do (if flying early to Cairo we could perhaps enjoy some more of Cairo before flying back home the next day). We do recommend this tour to anyone that's looking to going to Egypt, just be ready for those little things I mentioned!
We were a group of 7 people from Switzerland and did the "Enchanting Egypt Tours - Internal Flights Included" with the organizer "Beyond The Nile Tours". Everything was very well organized and the guides did a very good job. We would especially like to praise Mahmoud Noby. He fulfilled all of our wishes, even on the last day, when the tour was already over, he organized a boat and taxi for us. Mahmoud - THANK YOU SO MUCH. In Cairo we stayed in the “Tulip Golden Plaza” hotel and on the Nile in the “Princess Sarah” cruise ship. Both accommodations were fine, clean and with good meals. We didn't eat salad on the trip for fear of diarrhea. At the end of the trip we learned that in the kitchen the food was only washed with water from "controlled bottles". So we could have easily eaten the salad. Nobody in our group had diarrhea, and we didn't meet anyone else with diarrhea either. For us the highlights were: the pyramids, hot air balloon flight and the Valley of the Kings. We were surprised that photography is now allowed in the Valley of the Kings. When we were there in 2017, it was still strictly forbidden. The hot air balloon flight must be booked in addition. It will remain an unforgettable experience for us and we would repeat it at any time. Although the war in Egypt is close, we felt safe at all times. We love Egypt and the Nile and hope to come back soon.
The tour guide in Cairo and Aswan are really nice and responsible. Especially for Anas that he always satisfies with our requests (like go visit local markets). Enjoy the whole trip a lot ?

Planning a great educational tour or trip takes time and specialized knowledge. You need to leave all the planning in the hands of people who have experience and those who understand the kind of experience you are looking for in a life time of memories.

In the complex Internet world of travel, you may end up booking your travel arrangements over many different websites through different suppliers, located in different countries. This can be a frustrating and painful process with the smallest change and no one to speak within a moments notice.

We provide you with a broader and more complete range of services that cannot be found on the Internet. The ability to contact a real person can make all the difference when you have a problem, or need some special advice or assistance. A good travel team first gets to know you and learns about you, your approach to travel, and what you like to see and do. We do just that at Egypt tours --Africa travel tours.

US Dollars are widely accepted in Africa as well as most major credit cards (Visa & MasterCard). It’s a good idea to let your bank know the countries you will be travelling, to avoid your card being declined. ATM’s are also available in most of the larger cities.

Vaccinations

We suggest you contact your doctor and local Travel Health Clinic a few months prior to your departure. Malaria pills are recommended when visiting Zimbabwe and Botswana. The Yellow Fever Vaccine may also be recommended.

Electricity

An adaptor (which changes the physical plug) and/or converter (which changes the electric current) are necessary if you plan to use an appliance with voltage different from the standard within the country you are visiting. Please note, if your appliance has dual voltage (such as your phone charger) you may still need an adaptor for the plug. When packing your electronic items for travel, please review the converter electric current level to make sure it is the same or greater than the items you are planning on using. If you plan on utilizing or transporting a sleep apnea machine, please remember to pack an extension cord and adaptor plug to ensure proper function.

South Africa  is supplied at 220/230 volts AC 50Hz. The adaptor is Type M. Botswana  is 220-240 volts at 50Hz. Type M & G adaptors can be found.  Victoria Falls  is 220 volts at 50Hz. Both Type M & G adaptors can be found.  Zambia  is 230 volts and 50Hz. Type C, D & G plugs are found.

Plastic Bag Ban

Many African countries have or are in the process of implementing a Plastic Bag Ban. We ask that you consider using eco friendly alternatives to single use plastic bags when packing for this trip!

Plastic pollution is the gravest environmental threat because it affects human life, marine life, and the entire food chain. Several retailers have accepted the South Africa Plastic Bag Ban and are planning a ban on single use plastics and replacing it with shopping bags which are biodegradable.

Johannesburg: May is one of the driest months and the average daytime temperature is 14C. Kruger area: May marks the beginning of the cold season in Kruger National Park, however, your chances of spotting wildlife have upped considerably. The average daytime temperature reaches 20C. Rain is unlikely as African winters are mostly dry. Victoria Falls: May is a great time to visit Victoria Falls, after the region’s summer rains.  The average temperature is 20C. Chobe: May is the best time to visit Botswana. The sky is clear, the air is dry and its warm during the day, averaging 24C. The animals of the savanna are easy to spot because they concentrate around the few remaining water holes. The nights are cool. Cape Town: May is the beginning of Autumn in Cape Town. The weather will be cool and wet. The average daytime temperature is 16C, the days are often cool and overcast.

Packing for your African Safari Guideline

Recommended clothing:

  • Black and dark blue are thought to attract the Africa Tsetse flies, whereas predators identify red with wounded animals. With the amount of dust in the bush, white gets dirty very easily.
  • Can adapt to the changing temperatures throughout the day (dress in layers)
  • Items that can be easily hand washed if necessary and are quick to dry (cotton shirts)
  • Light jacket/ rain jacket and/or vest
  • Sweater, scarf, hat & gloves
  • Items that are comfortable and warm at night are important
  • A casual pair of pants and top are suitable for evening meals, very informal!
  • Comfortable walking shoes and a pair of sandals to rest your feet at the end of the day
  • Swimsuit, sunglasses

Other Important Items:

  • Sunscreen, bug spray
  • Adaptors and converters for charging and plugging in electronic items

“It was a trip of a lifetime, the group we were with, Koral, and all the people we met throughout the trip were amazing.” – John & Judy M

“ My expectations for the Africa trip 2023 were surpassed for several reasons. The planning that went into this trip was extra-ordinary and the details were well thought out. How smooth each transition was between the locations we travelled were as seamless as could be. The level of planning to ensure we were met at the exact time to be accompanied to our next location was paramount to the success of this trip. Finally to our personal guide Koral; there isn't enough to be said about how detailed and ready she was to do the work to put the cherry on the top...and she did.” – Kevin H

“I really enjoyed listening to the life experience stories shared by Daryl and our Cape Town guide. This enriched my travel experience to a foreign country. Our tour guide Koral and other co-travellers greatly contributed to a wonderful trip!” – Sandy W

Travel + Leisure Readers’ 20 Favorite Safari Lodges and Safari Outfitters in Africa of 2024

Readers voted for their favorite African lodges and safari outfitters in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2024.

africa world tours

How Voting Works

What readers loved about africa safari lodges, safari lodges winner, safari lodges full list, what readers loved about africa safari outfitters, safari outfitters winner, safari outfitters full list.

Travel + Leisure readers’ votes this year proved that people are essential to the best safari experience, in regards to both lodges and outfitters. From warm, welcoming on-the-ground staff to a reliable and knowledgeable travel specialist pulling all the trip details together, readers highlighted how a great team can make all the difference — in addition to epic wildlife sightings and transportive accommodations.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

Tour operators and safari outfitters were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Staff/guides
  • Itineraries/destinations
  • Accommodations

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

South Africa was the most popular country this year, with three lodges in the top ten. Coming in at No. 1, Monwana Game Lodge is a solid all-rounder, overlooking a waterhole in a wildlife-rich safari reserve, supported by a compassionate team.

Asilia Namiri Plains (No. 2) in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park garnered plenty of praise for its team, too. “The staff were kind and made this a trip of a lifetime,” wrote one reader. The tents were also a highlight: “The rooms were huge, comfortable, and gorgeous, and the outdoor tub overlooking the Serengeti was unbeatable.”

But it wasn’t only lodges in famous Big Five destinations that T+L readers loved. Uganda’s Mount Gahinga Lodge, Volcanoes Safaris (No. 4) with direct access to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Kyambura Gorge, Volcanoes Safaris (No. 6) — where chimpanzee trekking is the big draw — reveals the popularity of primate safaris.

Monwana Game Lodge: Thornybush Nature Reserve, South Africa

In Thornybush Nature Reserve — part of South Africa’s Greater Kruger area, one of the best regions in Africa for Big Five sightings — Monwana Game Lodge is located by a waterhole frequented by elephants, lions, and other key wildlife. The lodge was the top choice for T+L readers this year, with one reporting “an amazing experience throughout, from staff to game viewing.” With just six suites, and a private residence for up to five guests, Monwana is ideal for honeymooners or families with kids over age 10. As well as twice-daily game drives, guests can go on bush walks, take a massage at the spa, or head out after dark for stargazing.

T+L readers valued expert teams with enthusiasm and reliability in their favorite safari outfitters this year.

2024’s No. 1 winner — Alluring Africa — scored perfect marks, making it readers’ top choice for the second year in a row.  Vegas-based Dazzle Africa (No. 2) is also no stranger to high scores from T+L readers, one of whom said they’d discovered the Zambia specialist through our 2021 World’s Best Awards — after an initial call with a “helpful and committed” trip planner, they “didn’t need to look any further.”

South Africa-based Go2Africa (No. 9) earned praise for going above and beyond — for example, one reader reported their coordinator “got us into Kenya’s Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage after they had sold out.” The word “dream” came up repeatedly as guests described their Go2Africa vacation — “We can't wait to plan another dream trip to Africa!” one concluded.

Travel + Leisure Readers’ 10 Favorite Cities in Africa and the Middle East of 2024

R eaders’ favorite cities in Africa and the Middle East in the “World’s Best Awards” survey for 2024 range from modern metropolises to ancient cities that have stood the test of time.

Representing a huge swath of the globe, it’s no surprise that the favorite cities of T+L readers in Africa and the Middle East display a varied array of urban life. The honorees range from modern, gleaming metropolises to some of the oldest religious pilgrimage sites in the world to hubs for culture and creativity.

How Voting Works

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Cities were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Sights/landmarks
  • Friendliness

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved

This year’s winners feature a diverse assortment of cities spread throughout the African continent and Middle East. While North Africa has a large presence, two sub-Saharan cities made the list of honorees this year. One is a perennial winner: Cape Town, South Africa, which locked in the No. 2 slot this year. As one voter shared, “Cape Town should be on everyone's bucket list. The things to do range from local safaris, to land and ocean animals, history, and some of the best wine vineyards in the world. The people are friendly and the city is safe.”

The second sub-Saharan winning city has shown a steady climb since first appearing on the list three years ago. The evolving capital of Kigali, Rwanda, moved up to the fifth position this year. Voters describe it as a beautiful hub with friendly, helpful residents. “Amazingly clean and progressive city! I felt safe walking all over,” wrote a voter. “There is a wide variety of cuisine available and amazing coffee.”

And yet, North Africa continues to dominate the list, with two entries from Egypt and three from Morocco this year. Fez nabbed sixth place, thanks to being what one respondent described as “a treasure trove of culture and history! A must see if you are in Morocco.” The much smaller Essaouira secured No. 7, in its first reappearance on the list since 2021.

The third Moroccan city on the 2024 list managed to claim the top spot. Keep reading to find out which one, and to see the entire list of readers’ favorite cities in Africa and the Middle East.

The Winner

Marrakesh, Morocco

For the second year in a row, this enchanting city has scored the first position, although it’s nearly always on the list somewhere. Nestled in the scenic foothills of the Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh is one of Morocco’s most popular destinations for tourists. “OMG Marrakesh, it’s a hidden pearl!” exclaimed one reader. “Every place is an explosion of senses…all these secret places, unexpected discoveries, glamorous on one side but modest on the other.” The country’s fifth largest city combines the old and new in a gorgeous way, and it has become a destination for art and design lovers thanks to recent openings including boutique hotels Riad Dar Dada and Izza, and its dynamic roster of museums and galleries. Still, travelers also can’t get enough of the narrow medina streets, historic hammams, and impressive riads. Voters especially love the souk, with one of them writing, “Souks and spices. Camels and donkeys. At the main souk, if you can't find what you're looking for, it's not made.”

"Every place is an explosion of senses…all these secret places, unexpected discoveries, glamorous on one side but modest on the other."

South Africans lose visa-free entry to Ireland

africa world tours

South Africa and Botswana nationals are required to obtain a visa before travelling to Ireland, effective from Wednesday.

A transit visa will also be required if intending to transit through Ireland en route to another destination.

"This is a carefully considered decision which will bring Ireland into closer alignment with the Schengen area in respect of both countries, and into line with the UK in respect of South Africa," justice minister Helen McEntee said on Monday.

She said in recent years a significant number of international protection applications, which are referred to as refugee status in South Africa, have been received from nationals of Botswana and South Africa.

The Dublin visa office will establish a dedicated desk to process applications from South African passport holders. The department will also establish three visa applications centres in South Africa  with visa service provider VFS Global.

Transitional arrangements will be put in place for nationals of Botswana and South Africa who have existing arrangements made before July 10 2024 to travel to Ireland until August 9. Those  who have existing travel arrangements are advised to check irishimmigration.ie for further information.

Ireland is clamping down on illegal entry into the country.

More than 3,700 "doorstop" operations were carried out on flights that pose risks of irregular migration at Dublin airport in the first half of 2024, and more than 115 people were arrested for arriving without appropriate documentation in the same period.

World’s most powerful passports: SA’s ‘green mamba’ rises one spot

The government said its border management unit continues to provide training and 24-hour advice to airlines on how to identify and deal with immigration abuse. A review of carrier liability legislation has been completed and new increased levels of fines will soon  be introduced.

Other nationalities who require visas for travel to Ireland include Afghanistan, Bahrain, Belarus, Egypt, India, Jamaica, Nigeria, China, Qatar, Rwanda, Thailand, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

A year ago, South African passport holders had visa-free access to 106 countries. These include Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Argentina, Israel, Seychelles, Peru and Qatar. A visa was required for 121 countries, including Morocco, Mexico and Malta.

Two years ago a South Africa passport allowed citizens visa-free entry to 105 countries in the world, ranking it in 55th place from a high of 35th place in 2008 and 2009.

The government was advised then by travel experts to do more to reduce passport fraud to improve the rating and ensure an effective, automated evisa system to improve the processing of applications.

News | San Clemente’s Kenworthy earns big win in South Africa

africa world tours

The event, the third stop of the Challenger Series, comes just ahead of the competitors gearing up in Huntington Beach for the Lexus US Open of Surfing , a spot where many local surfers, including Kenworthy, grew up competing on the amateur circuit.

Long Beach’s Nolan Rapoza came in second spot at the event, finishing just behind Ian Gouveia, of Brazil, a high placing that now also puts Rapoza into striking distance of making next year’s World Tour cut.

For Kenworthy, it was a first-ever Challenger Series win, earned after beating France’s Vahine Fierrro.

“It feels so good, I did not come into this event expecting this,” Kenworthy, 17, said in an interview with WSL. “I’m so excited going into the US Open now, it’s so close to home, so hopefully I can carry the momentum.”

Her win catapulted her to the fourth spot on the Challenger Series rankings.

Rapoza jumped up to the eighth spot on the rankings heading into the US Open at his home break, where he’s previously made it to the semifinals twice at past events. The top 10 men at the end of the six-stop Challenger Series make it to the elite World Tour to compete against the world’s best.

‘It’s our moment.’ Girmay’s Tour de France breakthrough comes as the cycling worlds head to Africa

Biniam Girmay grew up in Eritrea watching the Tour de France on TV each July with his father.

He idolized three-time world champion Peter Sagan but never dared to dream of matching the Slovakian cyclist’s exploits.

Then came Monday, when Girmay became the first Black African rider — actually the first Black cyclist from any continent — to win a Tour stage.

“I never dreamed to be part of (the) Tour de France,” Girmay said after wiping away some tears.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Next year, Rwanda will become the first African country to host cycling’s road world championships.

“It’s our moment to show our strength and our potential,” Girmay said.

And to think the initial plan for Girmay’s Intermarche-Wanty team from Belgium was for the Eritrean to lead out the sprint for Belgian teammate Gerben Thijssen. But when Girmay lost touch with his teammates in the frenetic finale, which saw Mark Cavendish and others caught behind by a crash, Girmay was given the green light.

“I heard on the radio to do it for myself, because I had already lost the wheel,” Girmay said. “For me it’s always easier to find (space) myself. Then it’s just close your eyes and go for victory.”

Image

Sagan, who won 12 stages in his Tour career, would have been proud of the way Girmay squirmed his way through a tiny space to edge past Fernando Gaviria — a winner of seven Grand Tour stages — at the line.

Girmay also made history in Italy two years ago when he won a stage at the Giro d’Italia to become the first Black African to take a victory in a Grand Tour. But Girmay’s Giro victory was marred when he was rushed to a hospital after getting hit in the left eye by a prosecco cork he popped open during the podium celebration — forcing him to abandon the race.

Girmay was more careful in his celebration this time.

“This win is worth more,” Girmay said. “I don’t have words to explain how important this victory is for me and for my continent.”

Girmay started riding in single-day races at home in Eritrea and then left home for the International Cycling Union’s development center in Aigle, Switzerland, in 2018.

In 2021, he won a silver medal in the under-23 road race at the world championships in Belgium. Then at the start of 2022, Girmay won a single-day classic at the Gent-Wevelgem race in Belgium.

Merhawi Kudus and Daniel Teklehaimanot paved the way for Girmay when they became the first Eritreans to ride in the Tour de France in 2015 — when Teklehaimanot became the first African rider to wear the King of the Mountains polka-dot jersey. They rode for the South African MTN-Qhubeka team.

Human rights groups describe Eritrea as one of the world’s most repressive countries. Since winning independence from Ethiopia three decades ago, the small Horn of Africa nation has been led by President Isaias Afwerki, who has never held an election.

Riders from only one other African country — South Africa — have won Tour stages: Robert Hunter (2007) and Daryl Impey (2019). Four-time Tour champion Chris Froome was born and raised in Kenya but represented Britain.

“This is so important for cycling,” said Aike Visbeek, the performance director for Girmay’s Intermarche-Wanty team. “Now the world can see what is possible when we give these guys a chance.”

And Girmay isn’t done yet.

He’s now high up in the points standings for the Tour’s green jersey that goes to the race’s top sprinter. And there are a handful more sprinting stages to come in this year’s race.

He’s just 24.

“It’s my time,” Girmay said. “Now we are really part of the big races. We have a lot victories so it’s our time, it’s our moment. I never cry, but inside I am, I just have no words.”
