May2023:2 : Okay, this location was significantly different from the other locations we stopped along the way of our trip. Several of the outside pumps were out of order with bags over them. The personnel inside at the cash register were efficient and capable. Good customer service and greeting skills. I walked through this area and it appears that the attached businesses are not functional except for the sit down diner. There was a sign at the front that indicated seat yourself. I stopped in the restroom and was disgusted by the filthy nature of the whole thing.

Convenient as it's right off the highway, pump worked great with no issues. Inside, the bathrooms are at the opposite end where all the showers, laundry & all the truckers hang out. The women's bathroom was fairly clean and empty. However the men's bathroom had a line and I could smell the urine from outside. Husband used it and said was incredibly filthy and none of the containers had soap.

Even with the pandemic Travel America still manages to keep the party going and seems to still be the exclusive pit stop for travelers. It's been well over a couple years since I last visited this one. Compared to the precovid days it's looking a lot different these days. This time around I visited mainly to pick up some bottled waters and to use the restroom before headed back to Edgewood. The staff was wearing masks. Restrooms were fairly clean. The place was fairly decent with the exception of the usual occasional wacko or two hanging around. They also offer showers for the truckers or travels going through for a small fee. So if your hurting for one that's the spot to hit up. Will I be back? Most likely if I'm in Moriarty since it's the biggest one out there that also offers food.

Avoid this shop. These are by far some of the laziest, worthless technicians I have ever seen in my four years of truck driving I watch the guy who was supposed to replace three tires on my truck take about 15 breaks in the process so after 2 1/2 hours and only having one tire replaced, I told them I was done. Because of this, I will never go to any TA for service ever again they charged me for two hours of work when they only actually work about 20 minutes.

Photo of Paul Y.

Disgusting place. Probably worst place to stop on I40 in the south west. Never have I seen the bathrooms clean. And it seems like it gets way too much traffic they this place than it can accommodate.

Photo of Gerard H.

I don't care if I have 18 flat tires and the engine is falling out of my tractor, I'll never go to the shop here again.

Photo of Madelaine C.

Good coffee, clean establishment and everything you need at a travel center. Plenty of turnaround space at back for a Motor coach and toad.

Photo of Monica B.

Nah. Had to move to 3 different pumps. Small trickle of gas at each pump. Paid at each pump. Total amount of gas in our tank (combined)? 1 gallon. Spent 18 minutes trying to pump gas. 3 card charges for less than $2. One charge was 23¢ ... Finally had to leave. Bad restrooms. No paper towels. Going somewhere else.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

A blue airport screen showing extensive cancellations and delays is shown in close up with a man standing in front of it.

By Christine Chung

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Ghosts Season 3, Episode 9, “The Traveling Agent.”]

Ghosts is breaking new ground in the latest installment, “The Traveling Agent,” as do-gooder troop leader spirit Pete ( Richie Moriarty ) discovers his special power is that he can travel beyond the ghost boundary on Woodstone’s property.

While this power would thrill almost any spirit you could think of, Pete is initially reluctant to embrace the gift tied to his past as a travel agent who didn’t travel when he had the chance in life. After a bumpy outing with Jay ( Utkarsh Ambudkar ), Pete is further convinced that his power isn’t something he wants to explore further, but he’s convinced by his pals that he should embrace it.

By the end of the episode, he was boarding a flight to St. Lucia where his daughter and grandson were vacationing. Below, Moriarty opens up about his initial reaction to Pete’s ghost power, the possibilities it unlocks, thoughts on his bromance with Jay, potential romance with Alberta ( Danielle Pinnock ), and how the power will impact the finale episode.

Pete’s episodes always have an emotional aspect to them. Do you like leaning into that heaviness?

Richie Moriarty: I think the Joes have really seen Pete as the emotional heart of this cast in the way that he’s very earnest. He’s very naive, but there’s a lot of heart that comes out of this guy. He cares greatly for the other ghosts in the house. He really sees them as his troop. He was a troop leader in life, and this troop of ghosts is this group that he, in many ways likes to lead. So I love that the character has that dimension in the show because all of [Pete’s episodes] are incredibly heart-wrenching, and I think it’s really fun to be able to play the different dimensions of this character.

Did you feel adrift without your troop as Pete explored his traveling powers?

I did feel a little adrift. I’ll be honest. We get so used to being in tight quarters with so many of us that it is strange whenever we shoot a flashback and we’re with other people in different places, or we have a situation like this where I am away from the mansion for the first time as a ghost. Exciting because you’re in a new environment, but then it’s almost a little more heady because you do have to think about, “Okay, this guy has not been out of the house in 40 years. How is he going to respond and take these new environments in?” There’s a lot he hasn’t seen in so long. It’s really exciting narratively for the show, it opens up a world of possibilities, which I’m thrilled about, but it is weird.

How did you feel about Carol’s death this season and do you hope to have her and Pete cross paths more?

I hope so. I hope that we’ll be able to continue to work with Caroline Aaron. She’s so funny. I think narratively for Pete, it makes sense that he needs to move on. But it’s also narratively really fun to have her hanging out and popping in when we need that character and when we need to ruffle Pete’s feathers some more. And she’s just a joy to work with. And it was really funny because when she came back, there was a lot of figuring out the ghost rules, relearning them after she learned for the first two seasons, “Do not look us in the eyes.”

Richie Moriarty and Danielle Pinnock in 'Ghosts'

Bertrand Calmeau/CBS

Pete’s power stems from his travel agent career in life and the fact that he never traveled. Do you think that realization will help him grow moving forward?

I think there’s big growth for him in the season finale. There’s a definitive moment that really changes him and I think changes his outlook, and he’s able to bring some of that perspective back to Woodstone and talk to the other ghosts about it. That’s what I’m most excited for. The possibilities with this power are kind of endless.

Does he see the merits of rule-breaking now?

Yeah. I think the Shawshank thing that Jay brings up in the episode is real, right? It’s crazy to think about being in one place for 40 years and then all of a sudden having the front door open and it’s like you can go wherever you want. I’m sure it would be massively intimidating, but as much as he doesn’t want to do it at first, I think he’s going to learn quickly that this can totally open up your world and broaden your experiences, and equip him in different ways to help other people.

Jay and Pete’s bromance is a highlight of the show. Do you hope to continue deepening that relationship?

Totally. I love working with Utkarsh. He’s become such a good friend, and the two of us love anytime we’re on set together. And the Joes have found great ways to get him involved, especially this season with Sas’s power, and with my power. So I think that will continue in different ways.

'Ghosts' Star Rebecca Wisocky on Hetty's Death Secret Reveal & Flower's Return

Is there hope for the Albert-Pete romance pipeline? It seems as if she’s warming up to the idea this season.

I think the Joes are smartly slow playing this Alberta and Pete relationship, and I honestly don’t know what their intentions are with it. But I do know that Danielle and I love each other so much, and whatever they do with this, we are going to be thrilled. In so many ways the two of these people make no sense together, but the more they learn about each other, the more they sort of grow in their afterlife, especially since she has been attracted to bad boys her whole life and she’s realizing that maybe that wasn’t the smartest thing. So why not look at the opposite in Pete, this guy who’s just insanely loyal and a true nice guy. And I think for Pete, too, he’s obviously never encountered anyone like Alberta in his life. So there’s huge potential in new things for him, and that’s part of what kind of ties back to this power is he has a lot of new experiences with this power that are on the horizon.

Prosecutor shake-up in Mary Moriarty's office in murder case against State Trooper Ryan Londregan

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty is requesting the authority to hire outside legal counsel at a time when a senior lawyer in her office who has been leading the prosecution of Minnesota State Trooper Ryan Londregan is no longer at the helm of the increasingly controversial case.

Moriarty's office has declined repeated requests in person and email to confirm or deny that Assistant County Attorney Joshua Larson has removed himself as lead prosecutor in Londregan's case. The trooper is charged with murder, manslaughter and assault in the fatal shooting of motorist Ricky Cobb II last summer during a traffic stop in north Minneapolis.

In a statement, Moriarty's office said it is "assembling a new prosecution team to handle what is an extraordinarily resource intensive case that will involve extensive litigation prior to trial."

"While this case continues we must also maintain the critical work of prosecuting the high volume of other serious cases that are central to the safety of our community," the statement said.

In light of the news about Larson and Moriarty's request for outside legal counsel, Gov. Tim Walz 's office said in a statement that it can't speak to Moriarty's reasons for doing so.

"But it raises questions about the approach she has taken in this case," the statement said. "The Governor will continue to monitor the case and has not closed the door to reassigning it."

Moriarty's office said it's "disappointing" to see Walz "further injecting politics into a criminal legal matter, without picking up the phone to gather more information first."

"The Governor knows well the extraordinary resources required for cases like this, including the prosecutions of Derek Chauvin and Jeronimo Yanez. This case should not be judged through limited information in the media, especially when we are unable to comment in detail on an active case."

Walz has not spoken personally with Moriarty about the case. He has maintained that he would only assign a case to Attorney General Keith Ellison if he requested it, and that hasn't happened.

Requests for comment weren't not immediately returned by Ellison's office.

When approached by a reporter earlier this week, Larson rebuffed questions about his status with regard to the case. Sources familiar with the matter who requested anonymity say that Larson initially requested help with the prosecution, but that no other colleagues wanted take part in the case.

Larson was a member of each team that successfully prosecuted ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd, and ex-Brooklyn Center police officer Kimberly Potter in the killing of Daunte Wright. Ellison's office led prosecution of both cases.

As opposed to earlier documents, the most recent filing from Moriarty's office in the case is not signed by Larson. Instead, it's the signature of Chris Freeman, who is the Managing Attorney for the Community Prosecution Division. Larson is no longer included in ongoing communication between the office and Londregan's legal team.

Moriarty submitted a request this week to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners for her office — rather than the county administrator — to maintain the authority to contract "outside counsel agreements and amendments for special criminal prosecution with the allocated budget of the Hennepin County Attorney's Office," according to a copy of the request.

She was at the board committee meeting Tuesday, but left to attend a press conference that she was hosting before the item came up on the agenda. The commissioners were then unable to ask her specifics about the request, including its purpose and timing.

Commissioners and staff have not commented about the reasons for Moriarty's request.

Administrator David Hough said, under the proposal, Moriarty would have to notify commissioners when she hired outside counsel for criminal cases and report those costs twice a year. The County Attorney would have to fund the hires out of her annual budget.

Hough also noted any outside attorneys working on criminal cases would have to abide by an outside counsel policy that has been in place for decades. Commissioners have several questions they want Moriarty to answer before they make a decision at their next meeting, Tuesday, April 30.

Commissioner Kevin Anderson wanted to make sure Moriarty would retain all authority over the cases that outside attorneys worked on.

"There needs to be accountability and transparency," Anderson said in a follow up interview. "The public needs to know who is in charge of a case."

Commissioner Marion Greene wanted more information on past expenses for using outside lawyers.

"I'm not crazy about this, but I see its necessity," she said while the board was discussing the request. "I appreciate the inclusion of reporting requirements and want to see how it goes."

The county routinely uses outside lawyers for civil matters, but Hough noted that the County Attorney is typically responsible for all criminal cases.

The Hennepin County Attorney's office is the largest public law office in the state. The previous lead prosecutor, Mike Freeman, never hired outside legal counsel from criminal prosecution in his 24-year tenure.

Londregan's legal team, state and federal lawmakers and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) have asked Gov. Tim Walz to remove the case from Moriarty and reassign it to Attorney General Keith Ellison.

"If a fair prosecutor takes over this case, it'll be dismissed. If Moriarty appoints one of her buddies, let's roll," Londregan defense attorney Chris Madel told the Star Tribune Thursday.

MPPOA Executive Director Brian Peters said in a written statement to the Star Tribune the case has been a "disaster" from the start.

"This latest news shows, once again, how this case should never have been charged. It's past time to reassign this case away from Moriarty to best serve a fair and honest judicial system – and not an unjust prosecution."

Word of Larson stepping down as lead prosecutor on the case has been circulating the courthouse in recent weeks, with the news reaching judges and defense attorneys who are not associated with the case.

Londregan appears in court Monday morning when his attorneys will argue not enough probable cause exists to charge him with murder because his use of deadly force was justified, according to motions filed this week.

In response, Moriarty's office argued in its motion that a jury is tasked with deciding whether the killing is justified.

Where Americans Are Traveling in 2024: By the Numbers

Americans are traveling abroad in droves.

The number of U.S. citizens flying to international destinations reached nearly 6.5 million passengers in March, according to the International Trade Administration. That’s the highest March total in over five years and shows that the post-pandemic “revenge travel” trend is the new normal.

It wasn’t just March, which usually sees a spike in international departures for spring break. In every month of 2024 so far, more Americans left the country than last year and 2019. These trends point to a blockbuster summer for overseas travel.

Nearly half of Americans (45%) plan to travel by air and/or stay in a hotel this summer and expect to spend $3,594 on average, on these expenses, according to a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, conducted online by The Harris Poll and commissioned by NerdWallet.

That's despite rising travel prices that have caused some hesitancy among would-be travelers. About 22% of those choosing not to travel this summer cite inflation making travel too expensive as a reason for staying home, according to the poll.

So where are traveling Americans going? And what does it mean for those looking to avoid crowds of tourists and higher travel prices?

New travel patterns

Nearly every region in the world saw an increase in U.S. visitors in March 2024 compared with March 2023, according to International Trade Administration data. Only the Middle East saw a decline of 9%. Yet not every region saw the same year-over-year bump. U.S. visitors to Asia saw a 33% jump, while Oceania and Central America each saw a 30% increase.

Comparing 2024 with 2023 only tells part of the story, however. The new patterns really emerge when comparing international travel trends to 2019. For example, Central America received 50% more U.S. visitors in March 2024 compared with March 2019. Nearly 1.5 million Americans visited Mexico, up 39% compared with before the pandemic. That’s almost as many visitors as the entire continent of Europe, which has seen a more modest 10% increase since 2019.

Only Canada and Oceania saw fewer visitors in March 2024 than in 2019, suggesting that interest in these locations has not rebounded. Indeed, the trends indicate a kind of tourism inertia from COVID-19 pandemic-era lockdowns: Those destinations that were more open to U.S. visitors during the pandemic, such as Mexico, have remained popular, while those that were closed, such as Australia, have fallen off travelers’ radars.

Price pressures

How these trends play out throughout the rest of the year will depend on a host of factors. Yet, none will likely prove more important than affordability. After months of steadiness, the cost of travel, including airfare, hotels and rental cars, has begun to sneak up again.

About 45% of U.S. travelers say cost is their main consideration when planning their summer vacation, according to a survey of 2,000 Americans by the travel booking platform Skyscanner.

That’s likely to weigh further on U.S. travelers’ appetite for visiting expensive destinations such as Europe, while encouraging travel to budget-friendly countries. It could also depress overall international travel as well, yet so far, Americans seem to be traveling more.

For those looking to avoid crowds while maintaining a budget, Skyscanner travel trends expert Laura Lindsay offered a recommendation many of us might need help finding on a map.

“Albania has been on the radar of travelers looking for something different,” Lindsay said. "Most people have yet to discover it, but flights and tourism infrastructure are in place, and there are fewer crowds in comparison to trending European destinations like Italy, Greece, or Portugal.”

On the flip side, American travelers looking to avoid crowds of compatriots would do well to avoid Japan, which has seen a staggering 50% increase in U.S. tourists between March 2019 and 2024.

Bucket list travel on a budget: Expert tips for airfare, loyalty programs, credit card perks and more

VIDEO: Tips for affordable travel

Many travelers have their sights set on summer getaways , but with everything from baggage fees to fuel costs impacting the price of a ticket, "Good Morning America" is asking travel experts to share tips for booking bucket list destinations on a budget and finding savings along the way.

Travel expert Nicky Kelvin, senior director of content for The Points Guy, offered his tips for affordable travel techniques.

travel america in moriarty

Where to find the best flight deals

travel america in moriarty

Kelvin encourages travelers to utilize Google Flights and other free price-tracking tools to compare fare prices and snag the best deal.

He also suggests using both the calendar and map features within Google Flights to see which airports, dates and destinations how the lowest fare.

From the Google Flights homepage on a computer, click "explore destinations" and select a departure city without adding a destination. Then zoom out on the map to see the best prices for destinations all over the world.

Get the most out of free travel loyalty programs

Travelers should be earning points for anything and everything that they are buying or booking from airline and hotels to car rentals, Kelvin said.

In addition to the points that can can help travelers earn free flights and hotel stays, Kelvin said to look for extra perks just for joining.

Hyatt rewards, for example, offers all guests free breakfast.

For Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Car Rental, he said you can add your spouse or domestic partner as an additional driver for free.

Loyalty programs are great for airlines too. JetBlue, for example, allows enrolled customers -- even if they don't have enough points for a flight -- to use points for discounts. Plus, with any airline, as you accumulate points to earn status, you can get free seating upgrades.

Travel credit cards with cash back perks

Along with earning points, travel credit cards give you protection for your trip like insurance to help with lost or damaged baggage and trip cancellation protection

As for credit cards, The Points Guy team suggests the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card as an all-around pick -- you get 75,000 miles after meeting your minimum spend in the first three months. Which Kelvin said is a value of over $1,300.

If you're looking to earn the most miles, he said look to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

"You'll earn the most points on all your purchases with this one," he said.

Finally, if you want a credit card with no fee, Kelvin suggested the Bilt Mastercard, which he said is particularly great for renters because you can earn points on what's likely someone's biggest expense.

Save money on international phone plans for summer trips

If someone's trip is taking them out of the country, using a cell phone internationally can cost $10 to 15 per day. For a family of four, that's more than $400 for a week.

If your phones support eSIM, Kelvin suggested purchasing a data plan for your destination through an app such as Airalo, Truphone or GigSky.

For example, one of Airalo's global SIM plans costs $9 for one week, which could save a family close to $350 dollars, depending on their existing international coverage.
