River Cruise Tour Reviews

The tour was fantastic, food and accommodation was great. Hassan went above and beyond to fulfil all of my needs would highly recommend.

The cruise on the Nile is a fantastic experience everyone should do in their life time. The cruise takes you to a lot of places, so expect to be constantly amazed at the magnificence of the ancient egyptian artifacts, the natural splendour of the Nile, and the kindness of the Egyptian people. The service on the ship is amazing, as well as the facilities on the boat. The tour is quite intense, starting early in the morning and finishing late on most days, but with many breaks for free time to roam around, to eat the delicious local food, to enjoy the poolside and the shows in the lounge, to rest and sail. The personnel on the boat was absolutely delightful - shoutout to the guys doing massage, the guy in the souvenir shop and the guys printing pics and shooting videos, who were all really nice to talk to! It is also worth knowing that the cruise is not actually "all inclusive", at least not by the definition we were used to, because drinks are not included, but it's quite cheap relative to european and I guess american prices. Also, the price does not include entrances to the various temples you will visit, but you have 2 options: either to pay for each entrance yourself, or to get a sort of "pass" through the agency that for $100 includes tickets and tips. If I were to do it again, I would probably prefer to get ticket entrances individually, because I don't know where exactly this tipping goes to. Also, people will still expect to be tipped because they don't know you e-tipped in advance. On that note, make sure to carry a lot of small bills and tip most people you interact with - the horse and carriage driver, the guy walking the camel, the people in the temples who try to explain things to you. In our case, because we don't come from a country where we use dollars or euros, this was difficult, as people expect most payments in dollars. There are many ATMs but often we would arrive in very busy areas and didn't feel very comfortable using the ATM in those areas. Sadly, I have to mention the less happy aspect of our trip which was the guide. I am sorry but I have to be honest, Hasan is evidently not passionate about Egypt's history or about antiquity. He speaks for a very short time giving very high level information and then disappears. Other guides will walk inside the temples with the tourists, explain things in detail and answer questions, which was not the case with our guide. I am sure he is a nice person, but maybe not in the right job. He took us to a couple of places that seemed interesting and were not mentioned in the tour - an essential oil / perfume shop and an alabaster factory. The perfume shop was a bad experience. The girls presenting the perfumes were arrogant and the price was 15 times more expensive than what we paid in the local market for the same stuff. Overall, it was a beautiful trip and we really feel like our journey to Egypt would not have been complete without the cruise and the temples - in particular, Abu Simbel is not to be missed. However, we can't omit saying that with a more passionate guide, this could have been much more enjoyable.

We were delighted with all the trips we did, the arrangements were always spot on, and our guide was so knowledgeable and made everything come to life for us. The boat accommodation and customer service was of a high standard too. We were a little disappointed with the food as it was largely the same buffet every day and not as flavoursome as we had expected, but plenty of choice. We loved the cruising down the nile and would have preferred more of that than sitting docked - usually between other boats so no view - with unpleasant fumes. We were keen to see the lock too, but it was timed that we went through it at 4 am!

Cruises sail on almost every river in Europe and the most popular are the Rhine, Danube, Seine, Rhone and Douro. You’ll see plenty of cruise ships plying these waters, lined up at ports and navigating the locks during the busy summer season. 

The Rhine River is the busiest in Europe. Snaking its way across the continent between the Netherlands and Switzerland, it’s a popular choice for first time cruisers. One of the most popular Rhine cruises is the classic one-week voyage between Amsterdam and the Swiss city of Basel, with stops in ports like Cologne and Strasbourg. 

The Danube is also a favourite. The second longest river in Europe (after the Volga), it flows for almost 3,000km through most of Central and Eastern Europe including Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania. You can even combine a cruise along the Rhine and Danube rivers to sail the entire width of Europe. 

The Douro River is the third-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula, stretching almost 900km from its source near Duruelo de la Sierra in Spain to its outlet at Porto, Portugal. On a floating holiday along the Douro, expect scenic views of terraced vineyards in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Douro Valley, delightful towns and picture-perfect landscapes, along with an exciting blend of cultures and cuisine from around the world.   

Cruising the Seine is an excellent way to experience northern France. Originating in Burgundy, the Seine River ebbs through Paris and into the English Channel at Le Havre. Many Seine itineraries begin and end in Paris, giving passengers the opportunity to delve deeper into the French capital before or after their cruise. For more French joi de vivre, sail through the south of the country on the Rhone and Saone rivers or explore legendary wine country with a cruise on the Garonne River through Bordeaux. 

Other rivers that feature on European cruise itineraries include the Main River, Moselle River and Elbe River. 

River cruises pass through almost every country in Central Europe as well as some in Eastern Europe. Depending on the river you choose, you may visit one country or a dozen.  

The Danube flows through 10 countries. Starting from Germany, it passes through (or forms part of the borders of) Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova. The Rhine River moves through or borders Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands. The Douro River begins in Spain and ends in Portugal. A number of cruises sail through France on the Seine, Rhone, Saone and Garonne rivers.

Spring and autumn are popular for their pleasant weather, greener landscapes and fewer crowds. Late spring in May has mild temperatures and lighter crowds. Summer – June, July, August – is also superb for cruising, especially for sunlovers, but it’s worth noting that popular cities get crowded in the warmer months. September is also a favoured month; the sun is still shining but crowds from summer high season have dispersed a little.

Typically, all meals are included on European river cruises. That means breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, along with snacks in between, at the onboard restaurants. Many include complimentary wine or beer during meals and some include free-flowing drinks all day. Remember to check your specific packages before you cruise.

Yes, entertainment is a big part of European river cruises and will help to immerse you in the destinations. Many cruise lines invite local musicians onboard at each port, providing an authentic connection to regions that have a strong tradition of music. Other entertainment options onboard might include dance, theatre, art classes and cooking demonstrations. River ships don’t have the same large theatres as ocean ships, so you’ll be able to enjoy these performances in intimate spaces or even on the outdoor sun deck.

They might both be called cruising, but an ocean cruise and a river cruise are completely different experiences. River cruises offer a more intimate getaway, both onboard and ashore. The smaller vessels required to navigate narrow waterways can get super close to cities and carry fewer passengers – usually less than 200. Ocean cruise ships are significantly larger, with some carrying more than 4,000 guests.  

If you prefer a serene getaway, river cruises are perfect! Due to the size of river cruise ships, you won’t find oodles of shops, bars, restaurants, fitness centres, and casinos on board either. Just one or two dining venues, some outdoor space, possibly a swimming pool and a small fitness centre or spa. Lastly, river cruises boast more stops along the way, with short sailing distances and more time spent in port. Ocean cruises often involve days at sea and additional transport from large ports to city centres.

Many river cruises come with selected excursions included in your fare, but you’ll need to check with your travel agent or the cruise line. Some lines have different tiers of shore excursions – basic excursions are included but you need to pay extra for the fancier ones. Free options usually include the guided walking, cycling or bus tours that set off from each port of call and are a meaningful aspect of river cruising. Viking River Cruises offer one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call as part of their inclusive packages, and Uniworld boasts fantastic active options, such as hiking, cycling, kayaking, and even golfing. As a general rule, the more expensive the cruise, the more will be included.

Designed to explore the Peruvian Amazon in luxury and comfort, the Aria Amazon is an all-suite ship with floor-to-ceiling windows, giving you a full view of the majestic rivers and rainforest. Ganges Voyager II

With accommodations inspired by the grace and elegance of the British colonial period, the all-suite Ganges Voyager II is one of only two ultra-luxurious ships serving the Ganges. Built-to-order in 2015, this ship was custom-designed to serve Uniworld's new 2016 "India's Golden Triangle and the Sacred Ganges" itinerary.

Mekong Jewel

The Mekong Jewel will be the newest and most luxurious ship on the Mekong river. This all-suite ship will include two dining venues: one main restaurant and an al fresco eatery on the upper deck. S.S. Antoinette

When you step aboard the S.S. Antoinette, you'll understand why the "S.S." precedes "Antoinette," as this appropriately means "Super Ship." Aboard ship, the ambiance is reminiscent of France's Château de Versailles during the late 18th century, with the character of the past thoughtfully blended with unusual touches to create a feeling of luxury, warmth and elegance. A blue Strauss 10-foot Baccarat chandelier with huge sapphires, originally hung in New York's famed Tavern on the Green, graces the two-story lobby. S.S. Beatrice

The S.S. Beatrice boasts yacht-style light wood with blue and white finishes throughout, a renovated lobby featuring elegant mirrors, marble floors, a white Murano chandelier with blue shades and a grand staircase made of nickel and black iron—a signature design element of Uniworld’s Super Ships. The ship’s redesigned lounge features sofas and chairs with hand-made upholstery, a parquet floor and upholstered ceiling panels, solar shades and new USB ports allowing guests to charge anywhere they are sitting. The artwork throughout the ship includes pieces from Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder and Pino Signoretto.

S.S. Bon Voyage

With her transformation, the S.S. Bon Voyage will debut a completely different look—including a redesigned top deck with an added swimming pool and lounge area, with an adjacent casual dining venue featuring lighter fare with a local spin and chef-led cooking classes. Inside, four new gorgeously-appointed suites will be introduced, as well as marble bathrooms throughout the ship, an enhanced dining room with an added chef demonstration area, and a new bistro inspired by Bouillon Pigalle in Paris.
