Travel + Leisure

No matter the destination, traveling with sunscreen is one of the best (and usually most cost-effective) ways to protect your skin from harmful rays. If checking in a suitcase isn’t a part of your flying routine, it’s important to bring a travel-size sunscreen that falls under the general 3.4-ounce size limit.

Almost every popular sunscreen or skin care brand carries a mini version of their full-size products, so we researched the best on the market and tested 20 different TSA-friendly options for your next tropical vacation . With options for stick, spray, reef-safe, and splurge-worthy sunblocks, we included various sunscreens on our list that earned rave reviews from Travel + Leisure editors.

Best Overall

Babo botanicals sheer mineral sunscreen lotion spf 50.

  • Transfer 5 /5
  • Opacity 5 /5
  • Water Resistance 5 /5

The consistency feels like lotion so a little goes a long way.

There is a very slight white cast that disappears after you rub in the sunscreen.

From texture to water resistance, the Babo Botanicals Sheer Mineral Sunscreen won us over when we used it on a four-day trip to Hawaii . While we were expecting the formula to feel thick like typical mineral sunscreens, we were big fans of the liquid-type texture that applies like a nourishing lotion. After putting sunscreen all over the body and face at the beach, we loved that the formula absorbs quickly, only has a faint mineral smell, and doesn’t feel greasy.

Best of all, we discovered that a little goes a long way thanks to the lightweight and slightly runny texture of the sunscreen. When we went into the ocean, the sunscreen remained on the skin and didn’t come off or transfer onto any clothes or towels. We used the sunscreen several times per day for four days, and there was still about one-third of the product left over, so we think the value is exceptional for a hydrating and protective 3-ounce bottle.

The Details: SPF 50 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Vegan | Cruelty and fragrance free

Best Budget

Banana boat sport sunscreen lotion.

The sunscreen is ideal for being active, and it comes with two travel-size tubes.

The formula is not reef-safe.

Banana Boat is one of the best and most affordable brands on the market, so we recommend their travel-size Sport Performance Sunscreen. For a competitive price, you get two 3-ounce bottles that can easily fit in your carry-on. T+L’s digital editorial director Nina Ruggiero used the sunblock on a trip to Mexico and raved about the no-frills formula that is hydrating, protective from the sun, and doesn’t transfer onto clothes or swimsuits. The texture is fairly thick, so it takes a bit of rubbing in to get a sheer finish, but it doesn’t take too long to absorb. “It protected my skin on a long day out on a boat in the sun, and I got a nice glow but did not burn at all,” she shared. The only downside is that the sunblock isn’t safe for reefs, which is something to consider for snorkeling or swimming in tropical waters.

The Details: SPF 30 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Oil and fragrance free

Travel + Leisure / Nina Ruggiero

Best for Hydration

Coola classic body sunscreen.

The texture feels exactly like lotion, and it doesn’t have an overpowering tropical scent.

It’s not designed to be worn on the face.

“I love how it left my skin feeling moisturized and not goopy,” T+L outdoor gear editor Taylor Fox shared after wearing Coola’s Organic Classic Body Sunscreen every day for two weeks. “It didn't feel like I was wearing sunscreen, but rather a high-quality body lotion.” The formula is made with plant-based ingredients and is safe under the Hawaii Reef Compliant Act, meaning it doesn’t have harmful chemicals that can damage coral reefs . Every time she applied the sunblock, it went on the skin evenly and smoothly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue. It didn’t transfer onto clothing or a towel, and the sunscreen didn’t run off after coming into contact with water. With prolonged use, we still had nearly half of the 3.4-ounce bottle left over, so we think the sunscreen could easily last for a one-to-two-week-long trip depending on how many times you use it throughout the day.

The Details: SPF 50 | 3.4 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Reef safe | Vegan | Cruelty free

Best Splurge

Shiseido ultimate sun protector lotion.

A little bit of this lightweight formula goes a long way.

The consistency is a slightly watery and oily.

We love that even a small dollop of the Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion blends effortlessly into the skin for a smooth and moisturizing finish. Although the bottle is only 1.6 ounces, the watery consistency makes it easy to spread the sun lotion, so just a little will get you plenty of coverage. The formula feels a bit oily, but after about five to 10 minutes, the sunscreen absorbs with a completely sheer set. For travelers looking for a fragrance-free sunscreen, we didn’t detect any scent, including that typical sunscreen smell. When we ran a sunscreen-soaked arm under the faucet, the formula remained perfectly absorbed without running off, so we feel confident in the brand’s promise of up to 80 minutes of water resistance before you’ll want to reapply.

The Details: SPF 50+ | 1.6 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Reef safe

Travel + Leisure / Cai Cramer

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen

It completely absorbs into the skin in under a minute.

There is a slight floral scent.

The best part of Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-touch Sunscreen is that you’ll barely feel it on your skin after applying the smooth and lightweight formula. Within one minute of applying the sunscreen, it absorbs seamlessly without leaving a greasy trace. The subtle floral scent masks any hints of typical sunscreen odors, so we didn’t mind the smell. We think the sunscreen consistency is thick enough that it feels hydrating without leaving a pesky white cast. When we wore the sunscreen under running water, it did run off the skin a little bit, but it didn’t cause the stinging in the eyes that can often happen with sunscreen. If you’re looking for sunblock that feels barely there, this one should be on your packing list.

The Details: SPF 55 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | PABA-free

Travel + Leisure / Elena Garcia

Best Reef-safe

Mdsolarsciences mineral creme.

The mineral formula is free of ingredients that can cause damage to reefs, and it absorbs much better than similar eco-friendly products.

There is a slight white cast if you don’t rub it in thoroughly.

The MDSolarSciences Mineral Crème SPF 50 Sunscreen is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are two ingredients that can cause coral reef bleaching. As expected with a mineral sunscreen, it was a bit thick, but once we rubbed it in thoroughly, the slight white cast went away. However, the best aspect of this silky sunblock is that it can be used all over the body. Besides the eco-conscious formula, we love that the brand also uses ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc that are designed for sensitivities like acne- or rosacea-prone skin. If you’re curious about the formula, the brand lists every ingredient with the option to click on the name for an explainer of the purpose of the component for transparency.

The Details: SPF 50 | 1.7 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Reef safe | Vegan | Cruelty free

Shiseido UV Clear Stick Protector SPF 50

The stick applicator makes it super easy to apply without getting sunscreen all over your hands.

It might be time-consuming to apply the sunscreen stick all over the body.

Shiseido’s Clear Sunscreen Stick is ideal for storing in your everyday bag for sun protection on the go. The stick is very small, but it packs a punch with a thick SPF 50+ formula that can easily be applied without having to get sunscreen all over your hands. It felt a bit greasy at first, but once we rubbed in the sunblock, the slight sheen went away quickly. “The stick of this sunscreen is clear, so I was delighted that there's no white overdue cast on my brown skin,” T+L associate director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “After I applied it and rubbed it in, there was no way to tell where it had been applied as it fully absorbed into my skin, leaving no residue.” She also used the sunscreen during a sweaty 45-minute workout and we were pleased to see that it didn’t run or rub off, so this is a great face sunscreen option for outdoor activities like hiking and biking.

The Details: SPF 50+ | 0.7 ounces | Up to 80 minute water resistance

Travel + Leisure / Morgan Ashley Parker

Best Mousse

Supergoop play body sunscreen mousse.

The foamy texture is easy to apply, extremely hydrating, and dries faster than lotion.

It’s hard to tell how much sunscreen is left in the bottle.

Parker also swears by Supergoop sunscreen, especially the Blue Sea Kale Body Mousse. Whether you’re applying sunscreen to your face or body, it’s super easy to use the top-press applicator to release the lightweight foam sunscreen. It has a very slight sunscreen scent that isn’t overpowering, and Parker often uses the sunscreen as a hydrating lotion when traveling to tropical destinations . “My skin is prone to dryness and this product feels moisturizing enough that it can replace a separate body lotion for me as well,” she said. “Even when I'm in a hot climate or sweating, there's no stickiness or evidence that something is on my skin.” We love that the formula doesn’t leave any type of white cast or greasiness after application. Parker always recommends it to her friends with kids, as the whipped texture makes it extra fun to apply.

The Details: SPF 50 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Cruelty free | Vegan

Best for Face

Black girl sunscreen broad spectrum spf 30.

  • Feel 4.3 /5
  • Opacity 4.7 /5
  • Water Resistance 4.5 /5

The sheer formula is designed to be used as a lotion and sunscreen that won’t leave behind a white cast.

It has a glowy finish.

The Black Girl Sunscreen Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion is designed for melanated skin and made with a variety of ingredients like jojoba and avocado, which protect and moisturize the skin without leaving a white cast finish. We wore the sunscreen over medicated acne creams and loved that it layers smoothly over the other skin care products without transferring or rubbing off when it comes into contact with water. Plus, the formula is fragrance-free, which is better for sensitive skin. If you’re looking for a facial sunscreen with a glowy (not greasy) finish, this sunscreen is a great option.

The Details: SPF 30 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Cruelty and fragrance free | Vegan

Coola Organic Classic Sunscreen & Sunblock Spray

The can makes it incredibly easy to apply the sunscreen and it rubs in without leaving a greasy residue.

It has a fairly strong tropical scent.

Using a spray sunscreen like this option from Coola makes it easier to reach more difficult parts of the body like the back. We’re big fans of the lightweight and transparent formula of this SPF 30 spray that didn’t leave any type of pasty color or greasy finish behind. And best of all, we couldn’t get enough of the coconut scent that wasn’t too overpowering and transported us to a sunny tropical island. The spray sunscreen dries quickly after being lightly rubbed into the skin, and we appreciated the gentle and nourishing feel of the vegan and paraben-free formula. After using sunscreen on the face every day for two weeks, there was about half left, so we think the 2-ounce bottle would only last for a weekend trip if you’re using it for all-over coverage. However, for quicker trips, this lightweight spray is a great option.

The Details: SPF 30 | 2 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Vegan | Cruelty free

Best Lightweight

Innisfree daily uv defense sunscreen.

It has the same consistency as sheer lotion.

There is a slightly shimmery finish.

Out of all of the travel-size sunscreens we tested, the Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen resembles the consistency and feel of a sheer face moisturizer the most. The lightweight formula is infused with natural ingredients like green tea, cica, and sunflower seed oil, and it has more of a watery texture than other sunscreens we tried. We think it’s ideal for working out or outdoor activities where you may get sweaty because the sunscreen didn’t run when it came in contact with water, and it absorbs quickly without leaving any clumpy or greasy residue. Instead, it gives a dewy finish that leaves the face looking refreshed and hydrated. It has a very subtle fragrance that isn’t overpowering, and it doesn’t leave any type of white cast after application.

The Details: SPF 36 | 1.69 ounces

Travel + Leisure / Shana Stahl

Other Travel-size Sunscreens We Tested

This was a competitive test, and many of us gave rave reviews. However, the five sunscreens listed below fell slightly short during testing due to a few minor issues like scent and white cast.

  • Sun Bum Original SPF 70 Sunscreen Lotion : The consistency is thick and hydrating, so we recommend it for the body. However, some rubbed off into our eyes and caused stinging, so we would be cautious about using it on the face.
  • La Roche Posay Anthelios Sunscreen, Melt-in Milk Lotion Face and Body Sunscreen : The sunscreen doesn’t leave a white cast, and it feels very nourishing like a thick lotion, but the chemical smell is overpowering and harsh.
  • Vacation Classic Lotion SPF 30 : The chemical formula rubs in completely sheer, which is ideal for wearing it on the face, but we wish the SPF was higher than 30.
  • EltaMD UV Sport Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Sport Lotion : The mineral sunscreen stayed on our skin for the duration of a sweaty workout without transferring onto clothing. However, there is a slightly greasy residue and white cast after application that we didn’t love.
  • CeraVe Broad-spectrum Mineral Sunscreen Stick : The stick formula is similar to deodorant, so it’s a little thick and tacky, but it rubs in very smoothly and sheer. We love the small size for tossing in a purse or carry-on.

Over two weeks, T+L tested 20 bottles of liquid, stick, and spray sunscreens. All of the bottles were intended to meet general carry-on liquid requirements that limit containers to 3.4 fluid ounces.

Whether we used the sunscreen at the beach, in the pool, or for any outdoor activity, we rated the formulas based on texture, opacity, water resistance, and transfer resistance. We applied the sunscreen at least seven times all over the body to get the most accurate usage impressions and to get an idea of how long the sunscreen could last for a vacation.

After thorough testing, our favorite sunscreens were easy to apply, rubbed on smoothly without a white cast leftover, and didn’t transfer when we put on clothes over the sunscreen. The best sunscreens didn’t come off instantly when the tester came into contact with sweat or water, and the formulas didn’t irritate the skin or leave a greasy residue. We rated the overall value of each sunscreen after testing was complete, uncovering the prices to evaluate the worth of the sunscreen compared to the price.

Tips for Buying Travel-size Sunscreen

Look at spf and uv protection.

The rule of thumb is to look for SPF 30 or higher. It can be easy to forget to reapply sunscreen after going in the water, so you’ll want to make sure you add more sunscreen after two hours or 80 minutes in the water.

Consider stick, liquid, or spray

Most sunscreens are in liquid form, but there are also sunscreens in sticks and aerosol spray, too. A stick can be easier to travel with — especially as an addition to your camping gear for kids — as you won’t have to worry about any liquid spilling (or, if you're flying, meeting the 3.4-ounce travel size requirement for carry-ons). No matter what kind of sunscreen you get, you’ll always want to keep your eye out for broad-spectrum protection, water resistance, and SPF 30 or higher.

Know the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen

Mineral or physical sunscreen sits on top of the skin and acts as a reflection to ward off harmful sun rays, whereas chemical sunscreen absorbs the rays. Mineral sunscreen has ingredients like zinc or titanium dioxide that can be better suited for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Chemical sunscreen is usually a little bit thinner and goes on sheerer than mineral sunscreen, so you’ll want to factor in the differences depending on the ingredients and application you’re looking for in a sunscreen.

Opt for reef-safe sunscreen if you're heading to the beach

A lot of sunscreens can contain active ingredients that are harmful to reefs and ocean wildlife. If you look at the active ingredients lists of a bottle of sunscreen and see oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, or homosalate, then the formula wouldn't be considered reef-safe. See the full list of harmful ingredients , according to the Coral Reef Alliance.

Although it varies by airline, the typical limit for liquids in a carry-on suitcase is 3.4 ounces. Usually, you can bring up to a 1-quart size bag full of liquids on an airplane, otherwise, you’ll want to check your bag if you have lots of liquids to bring.

Bringing an aerosol can like spray sunscreen in a carry-on is allowed on most airlines. However, the 3.4-ounce limit still applies, so if your spray is over the limit, you’ll need to check it to avoid potentially having to throw it away in the TSA security line .

The 10 Best Baby Sunscreens for Newborns to Toddlers

travel size baby sunscreen

By Macaela Mackenzie

Best Baby Sunscreen a collage of Aveeno Blue Lizard and Baby Bum sunscreens on a beige background

Parenthood brings with it an endless list of things to research and products to buy. And few seem quite as vital as the search for the best baby sunscreen once your little one begins to expose their sensitive skin to the sun.

As an adult, you know the importance of including SPF as a foundational part of your skin-care routine (Right?). Whether you opt for a chemical or mineral sunscreen , a good old-fashioned lotion , or one of the best sunscreen sticks for easy, on-the-go application, the ultimate sunscreen is simply one you'll use regularly, according to dermatologists. When it comes to littles, however, finding the best baby sunscreen is slightly more complicated.

"Infants' skin is thinner and more delicate, making them more susceptible to allergic or irritant reactions and at a higher risk of absorbing chemicals from sunscreen products," says Claire Chang , MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at UnionDerm in New York. "Babies are also more likely to put their hands or feet in their mouths leading to ingestion of sunscreen or to rub their faces and get sunscreen in their eyes." Choosing a gentle non-irritating sunscreen formulated specifically for babies' skin, in other words, is vital.

Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin Lotion

Why It's Worth It: Aveeno Baby's Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin Lotion is a gentle mineral formula that meets all the requirements for a safe and effective baby sunscreen: It's formulated with 100% zinc oxide, provides broad-spectrum coverage, has an SPF of 50, and is even water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. "It's also hypoallergenic and is formulated with skin-soothing oat, making it great for babies with sensitive or eczema-prone skin ," says Dr. Chang.

Editor Tip: Even if your baby doesn't have eczema, this is a great sunscreen for sensitive skin . It's free of parabens, phthalates, and fragrances. It also contains dimethicone, which creates "a protective barrier on the skin's surface so that water can't escape and environmental irritants are kept out," Patricia Ceballos , MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Prescott Valley, Arizona, previously told Allure .

Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection Mineral Sunscreen Stick for Sensitive Skin

Why It's Worth It: Aveeno's Baby's Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin mineral sunscreen also comes in a stick formula , which is recommended by both Dr. Greenfield and Dr. Chang. It's particularly good "for those with wiggly babies who refuse to put on sunscreen lotion or need a quick reapplication," says Dr. Chang. Make sure you rub it in to fully cover any exposed skin, adds Dr. Greenfield.

Editor Tip: The compact size makes this sunscreen perfect for travel or throwing in the diaper bag so you never get caught without SPF.

Babyganics SPF 50 Mineral Baby Sunscreen Spray on white background

Babyganics SPF 50 Baby Sunscreen Spray

Amazon (8 oz.)

Walmart (6 oz.)

Why It's Worth It: While spray sunscreens can be easier to apply to a moving target, Dr. Greenfield recommends avoiding aerosol formulas which are more likely to be inhaled or can irritate your little one's eyes. If you do opt for a spray formula, look for a sunscreen that comes in an easier-to-control pump bottle like Babyganics SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Spray. "As with all sunscreen sprays, make sure to apply a thick enough layer to get full coverage," says Dr. Chang.

Editor Tip: This plant-derived sunscreen is tear-free, according to the brand, to reduce the risk of irritation if it accidentally gets in baby's eyes.

Key Ingredients: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, sunflower seed oil, glycerin

Vanicream Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ white tube of sunscreen with blue and yellow text on white background

Vanicream Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50+

Why It's Worth It: While not technically formulated for babies, Dr. Chang likes this hypoallergenic formula for little ones with sensitive skin. "It's a pure mineral sunscreen with broad spectrum protection SPF 50+ that does not contain sensitizing chemical sunscreen ingredients, botanical extracts, or essential oils," she says, which can sometimes be irritating. It's free of dyes, fragrances, parabens, gluten, and lanolin, to boot. To help moisturize, it also contains squalane , a hydrator that can help treat skin barrier concerns like eczema.

Editor Tip: Vanicream's formula is non-comedogenic so it won't clog pores and is safe to use on the face, body, and even on mom or dad.

Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide, squalane

Why It's Worth It: Babies' thin skin loses moisture more easily than thicker adult skin, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics , which means your little one will likely deal with dry skin at some point. Baby Bum's Mineral Sunscreen Lotion is formulated with ultra-hydrating ingredients including coconut oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter to keep their skin soft and healthy. It's also free of nanoparticles, making it safe for coral reefs .

Editor Tip: Baby Bum's formula is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. Just remember to reapply and rub in completely after toweling off.

Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter

Instead of cocoa and shea butters, this lightweight sunscreen is formulated with glycerin , a powerful humectant that helps skin attract and retain water, as well as vitamin E , which works as an antioxidant to help prevent sun damage at the cellular level.

Editor Tip: Many parents find roll-on sunscreens easier to apply than sticks or lotions, particularly for squirmy babies. Plus, they're less likely to spill in a diaper bag.

Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide, glycerin, vitamin E

"It's lightweight, fragrance-free, and water-resistant for great protection," she says. It uses both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to reflect harmful UV rays, is free from parabens and fragrances, and is reef-safe.

Editor Tip: The clear cap turns pink in harmful UV light to help clear up any confusion about whether you really need to apply SPF on an overcast day.

Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, beeswax, dimethicone

Best Organic Sunscreen: Badger Baby Mineral Sunscreen Cream SPF 40

While it's water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, don't forget to reapply after towel drying and at least every two hours.

Editor Tip: Thinkbaby also offers a Clear Zinc option if you're worried about white cast as well as sunscreen sticks for fuss-free application.

Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide, glycerin, dimethicone

Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide, coconut oil, shea butter, calendula, sunflower oil, glycerin

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends waiting until your little one is six months old before using baby sunscreen. "Infants younger than six months old have more sensitive skin and more potential risks associated with certain sunscreen ingredients," explains Dr. Chang. Until they can safely wear sunscreen, she recommends keeping newborns in the shade as much as possible," especially during peak hours when the sun's rays are the strongest."

Of course, your newborn will be exposed to at least some sun. (Your pediatrician may even recommend a few minutes of sun exposure, which research shows can help prevent vitamin D deficiency in the first six months of life.) If your newborn is going to be exposed to the sun for more than a few minutes, "a rash guard, hats, and shade are the best options," to prevent sunburn says Nava Greenfield , MD, a board-certified dermatologist with Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York. "I recommend dressing your baby in lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants or a rashguard, wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection to protect their skin," Dr. Chang adds.

So, what if you find you accidentally forgot to pack the sun hat before heading to the park? Preventing infant sunburns, which are linked to increased rates of skin cancer later , according to The Skin Cancer Foundation, is the number one priority. "If you cannot avoid direct sunlight or certain areas of the body are not covered by the sun, I still recommend applying some sunscreen," says Dr. Chang. The risk of irritation on a small surface area of the body is better than the risk of a sunburn, she explains. Just be sure to use a sunblock formula designed for babies.

Sunscreens prevent sun damage by using either chemical or mineral-based formulas. "Chemical sunscreens use chemicals that absorb damaging UV rays and convert them to non-damaging heat," Sejal Shah, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of SmarterSkin Dermatology in NYC previously told Allure . Mineral sunscreen contains either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide which physically block both visible and UV light. They sit on the surface of the skin, rather than being absorbed into the skin, and act as a barrier to reflect harmful UV rays before they can do any damage, Dr. Chang explains.

For adults, both options are safe and effective. But for babies who have much more delicate skin, Dr. Chang says you'll want to opt for a fragrance-free mineral sunscreen, "which has a lower risk of allergic or irritant reactions, and avoid chemicals, including oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate"

Every sunscreen, mineral or chemical, comes with a sun protection factor rating. "SPF 15 guards against 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 protects against 97%, SPF 50 is about 98%, and SPF 100 blocks 99% percent," Joshua Zeichner MD, a board-certified dermatologist from New York City, previously told Allure .

The best sunscreens for babies are "broad-spectrum," meaning they block both UVA and UVB rays and are at least SPF 30, says Dr. Chang. "It is also important to reapply sunscreen every two hours for continuous protection," she adds.

Even with a higher SPF, you shouldn't necessarily ditch all those cute sun hats and rash guards. "Even when babies start wearing sunscreen, they should continue to wear UV-protective clothing and hats for extra protection," Dr. Chang says. "The more protection, the better."

In your quest to find the best baby sunscreen, you'll likely come across formulas labeled for "babies" and others labeled for "kids." "Baby and kid sunscreens are generally similar in formulation…both are formulated to be gentle and often use mineral sunscreen ingredients," says Dr. Chang. While you can technically use them interchangeably, some baby formulas may be "thicker and harder to wipe or wash off," which may make them more protective for babies on the move, says Dr. Greenfield.

A baby in a yellow swimsuit with sunscreen and several tubes of sunscreen

Whether you’re headed to the park or the pool , protecting your baby from the sun’s rays is a hot-button priority, to say the least.

Though you can protect babies and toddlers with the best baby swimsuits and UPF rash guards on the market, you can’t compare apparel to direct-on-skin lotions.

That’s why the New York Post turned to two board-certified dermatologists to hand-pick the best baby sunscreens on the market (and, to give us the 411 on how to apply and what to know before you do).

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that before six months of age the best course of sun protection is sun avoidance and shade. But, once your baby is halfway to the one-year-old mark, you should choose from one of the below options.

Related : Best spray sunscreens

“Most sunscreen formulations for children are physical, meaning they use titanium or zinc as the active ingredients,” Brendan Camp, MD , NYC-based double board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, told The Post. “This is because physical sunscreens tend to be less irritating. Aside from that, baby sunscreens differ from adult sunscreens primarily only in packaging and marketing.”

Ahead, find the best baby sunscreens to stock up on. Alongside our expert-backed product picks, we also curated an in-depth FAQ section to answer your questions on shopping for and applying baby sunscreen.

Post Wanted Picks

Best for eczema: trukid eczema daily sunscreen.

A white and green tube with a label

  • Good combination of ingredients for healing
  • Spreads easily and is less thick than some others
  • Lovely citrus scent
  • Lower SPF (better on overcast days)

Size: 3.4 ounces

For a solid daily sunscreen, I’ve used the TruKid Eczema Daily Sunscreen on my one-year-old. My daughter inherited my very sensitive skin, so I wanted to find something very clean and gentle (as well as tested on many babies with eczema). I love that this formula incorporated aloe vera, to help soothe the skin as well as jojoba oil to aid in any burn healing. Her skin has never had a bad reaction. The SPF count is slightly lower, but we use this on overcast days where the sun could be sneaky. It smells lovely as well — like citrus.

Customers are saying: “This is my favorite sunscreen. It works at least as good/if not better as any others I’ve tried, nice orange-like scent, not oily, not excessively thick, and effectiveness is immediate — added bonus the company uses biodegradable packing noodles…”

Best drugstore: CeraVe Baby Sunscreen SPF 45

A tube of CeraVe Baby Sunscreen SPF 45 with its packaging box

  • Takes about five minutes to absorb into the skin
  • Lower SPF than some other formulas

Size: 3.5 ounces

I’ve seen this sunscreen in a few drugstores and purchased it while traveling when I needed something on the fly. It exceeded all my expectations. It might not have the fresh smell of some scented options, but the paste spreads very easily, absorbs into the skin, and it seems to stay on for well over an hour. I wish it was a bit easier to find online, but you can scoop it up at Walmart for just $19.99.

Customers are saying: “I think this sunscreen is perfect for the little kiddos. The white, pasty substance lasts on the skin for a long time, even in contact with water. It protected my son’s skin for hours while playing on his splash pad.”

An FAQ on Baby Sunscreens

Ahead, our team of board-certified dermatologists best explains what to know before buying a newly minted baby sunscreen (and, just as important, how to properly apply it).

What age can babies start wearing sunscreen?

As mentioned, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that before six months of age the best course of sun protection is sun avoidance and shade.

“In the first six months for newborns, you should generally avoid direct exposure to the sun and sunscreen use as their skin is highly sensitive and more prone to irritation from sunscreen ingredients,” Idriss added.

How does baby sunscreen differ from adult sunscreen?

Baby sunscreen typically contains milder and gentler ingredients to minimize the risk of skin irritation.

“For example, zinc oxide which has soothing properties that can help calm irritated skin and reduce redness and inflammation,” Idriss explained. “It’s often also used in diaper creams to protect and soothe the baby’s delicate skin.”

For the most part, baby sunscreens will also be fragrance-free and hypoallergenic, the latter helping to prevent allergic reactions.

What SPF level is best for babies?

Once your baby is at least six months old, a general rule of thumb — according to Idriss — is to select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. This remains on par with dermatologists’ recommendations for kids and adults, too.

For a sunscreen to be “broad-spectrum,” it means that the formulation itself will help protect against both UVA and UVB radiation. UVA typically refers to rays that, if exposed too heavily on the skin, have a more direct (and negative) effect on anti-aging. UVB, because its rays are shorter than those of UVA, is more associated with skin burning. In short, broad-spectrum helps ensure both bases are best protected when applied regularly.

At what age should you transition from baby sunscreen to kids’ sunscreen?

“There’s no formal recommendation at which to transition from baby to kid sunscreen because the formulations are similar,” Camp explained. “What distinguishes them most is their packaging. The FDA does not have separate categories for baby or kid sunscreen.”

However, you should take a few factors into consideration. “For example, if your toddler has particularly sensitive skin or a history of skin reactions, you may want to continue using baby sunscreen or consult with a pediatrician before transitioning to kids’ sunscreen,” Idriss advised. “The same goes for a history of allergies and always always always patch test first.”

When in doubt, consult your child’s pediatrician for guidance.

What to know about sunscreen use if your baby has eczema

Most importantly, you should opt for a mineral sunscreen — those that contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide — “are less likely to irritate eczema-prone or sensitive skin,” Camp explained.

In addition, moisturize your baby’s skin first. “This can help create a protective barrier on your babies’ skin,” Idriss recommended. “If the baby’s eczema is actively inflamed, avoid applying sunscreen directly to the affected areas. The sunscreen may cause further irritation and discomfort. Instead, keep the baby in the shade and use protective clothing.”

What does it mean for a sunscreen to be “non-toxic”?

According to Camp, the AAD released a statement after an FDA study found that some ingredients used in chemical sunscreens can be absorbed into the bloodstream. “It said that the sunscreen ingredients have been used for several decades without any reported internal side effects in humans,” he recaps.

On that note, purchase your products and baby products from established brands and credible skincare retailers. “This is a larger discussion in my opinion,” Idriss said. “With that being said, formulators would not put toxic ingredients in our skincare products in the first place, whether it’s for your little ones or yourself.”

How to properly apply baby sunscreen, according to derms

First, apply a sufficient amount of sunscreen to cover all exposed areas of skin. “In most adults, the amount used in one application is about one ounce, or enough to fill a shot glass,” Camp explained, for reference.

You’ll want to use enough sunscreen to cover the child’s exposed skin adequately, too. “As a rule of thumb, for children, apply about one ounce (approximately a shot glass full) of sunscreen for each application,” Idriss explained (side note: we were in awe that both of our experts used the same analogy).

Be sure to also cover all exposed areas of their body including the face, ears, neck, arms, legs and feet. “Don’t forget the back of the neck and tops of the ears,” she warned — a common area of the skin applicators tend to neglect.

Reapply sunscreen as needed depending on the sunscreen you’re using, and especially after swimming, sweating or towel-drying, per Idriss’ recommendation. “When outdoors, every two hours is about the right amount of time,” she also noted.

What’s the best baby sunscreen to use on the face?

For babies, always apply a sunscreen lotion because you can see where it’s applied — unlike with a stick or spray, per Idriss.

There’s Basically No Difference Between Baby Sunscreen and Regular Sunscreen

Rose Maura Lorre

By Rose Maura Lorre

Rose Maura Lorre is a writer on Wirecutter’s discovery team. She has reported on turkey fryers, composters, body pillows, and more.

It’s a scorcher of a summer day, and all you want to do is smear some sunscreen on your kid before they wriggle out of your grasp. Good thing you have this baby sunscreen, right? Because it’s easier to apply, or kids like it more, or… something?

Not really. Many baby and kid sunscreens are just regular sunscreens gussied up with sweet-smelling scents or pastel packaging.

What's in a "baby and kid" sunscreen?

Sunscreens approved for sale in the US fall into three categories :

  • Physical (aka mineral) sunscreens contain active ingredients that reflect the sun’s rays.
  • Chemical sunscreens contain active ingredients that absorb the sun’s rays so your skin doesn’t.
  • Combination sunscreens include both physical and chemical active ingredients to keep you protected.

While the FDA regulates claims on sunscreen labels related to SPF, broad-spectrum protection, and water resistance, it does not regulate marketing terms like “sport,” “baby,” and “kid”—though most formulations for children are physical sunscreens .

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral sunscreen bottle with a blue cap on the left and a bottle of the brand's Baby version with a pink cap on the right.

For example, our top physical sunscreen pick, Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+ , has the exact same ingredient list as Blue Lizard Baby Mineral Sunscreen 50+ .

However, that doesn’t mean that baby or kid sunscreens aren’t worth buying, particularly if you (or your baby or kid) prefer the way they feel and smell.

travel size baby sunscreen

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+

An easy-to-spread physical sunscreen.

This physical sunscreen lotion absorbs easily and is free of added fragrance. While this water-resistant formula can—like most physical sunscreens—feel greasy and leave behind a white cast (especially on darker skin), we’ve found its dependable coverage worth the trade-off.

Buying Options

How to protect kids from sun damage, avoid spending extended periods of time in the sun when possible.

Seeking shade (or creating your own through the use of sun hats, sunglasses, rash guards, and more ) is the best first line of defense against sun damage for kids of all ages.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says infants younger than 6 month s should be kept out of the direct sun as much as possible—and to remain covered with hats and clothing whenever sun exposure can’t be avoided.

Children older than 6 months can wear sunscreen, according to The Skin Cancer Foundation, but should still avoid direct sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m and 4 p.m.

Look for broad-spectrum sunscreen

Broad spectrum means the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreens labeled SPF 30 or higher. (All of our picks meet these basic criteria .)

Pick a sunscreen that your kid will tolerate having slathered on them

If you prefer a physical sunscreen, our testers found that Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+ applies more easily than most other physical sunscreens, thanks to its runnier texture. Banana Boat Light As Air Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ , a chemical sunscreen, is a more affordable option that rubs in even more easily and is less visible on nearly every skin tone. Even less expensive is our budget pick, Equate Sport Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 , which is just 39 cents per ounce.

Continuous-spray sunscreens are often considered the easiest to apply; however, we no longer test them because it’s near-impossible to measure how much you’ve applied. Plus, dermatologists we spoke to told us they can pose health risks if the aerosolized particles are inhaled. (As one dermatologist put it in our sunscreen guide , “If you can smell your spray sunscreen, you’re inhaling it.”)

Experts advise against using sunscreens that contain bug repellent, which may reduce the sunscreen’s effectiveness.

The least effective sunscreen, of course, is one your child simply won't wear. So if winning the war against sun damage means losing the battle between a crabby kid and your preferred sunscreen, swap it out for one they like better. (Hey, nobody said parenting was easy.)

All the Ways to Make a Beach Trip Easier With a Baby

Y ou may have already bought your baby an adorable sun hat and a bottle of sunscreen, but there are a few other considerations you’ll need to make to be sure baby’s first beach trip is a success. (To be clear, you still need the adorable hat and the sunscreen, though.)

Put your sunscreen in your beach cooler

In addition to the drinks you normally stash in your cooler, you’ll need to pack more stuff in that icebox. First, stick your sunscreen in the cooler. Kids need a lot of sunscreen and are notoriously difficult to apply it on in any amount, but cold sunscreen feels great on a hot day. (Per Tiny Beans , this will also entice older kids to dry off long enough for re -application, which is a must for all ages.)

Also great to add to your cooler: Freezer pops , yogurt, and a spray bottle of water to help keep them cool. Just don’t forget to reapply that cold sunscreen after getting them wet.

Here are the essentials you need:

  • A backpack cooler with pockets and space for 40 cans of drinks, meaning space for sunscreen ($39.99)
  • Coppertone water-resistant kids’ sunscreen with an SPF of 70 ($10.28)
  • A continuous spray bottle for a cooling mist ($5.49)
  • 36 Fun Pops freezer pops ($2.98)

Set a phone timer for when to re-apply kids’ sunscreen

You have to reapply sunscreen to a child every two hours or so, plus any time they get sweaty or otherwise wet. In the heat or when they’re playing, you should also have your kid drink a little water every 20 minutes or so as well. Setting reminder timers will help avoid sunburn and dehydration, but if you’re not a fan of using your phone on the hot, sandy, wet beach, don’t forget to pick up an old-school timer for this. Try this one from J-Artdope ($13.88), which is small enough to fit in any bag and is magnetic so you can attach it to a chair or some coolers.

Pack everything baby needs in a laundry basket

You may already know that a mesh laundry bag makes a great beach tote , but when you’re dealing with a baby or toddler at the beach, you can also stick your cooler in a laundry basket on the way to the beach. Your baby can play or nap in the basket (though you need to make sure it’s in the shade and they’re not trapped in a tiny prison under direct sunlight), and it can help you keep them in one spot when it comes time to re-apply sunscreen. It’ll also function just like the mesh tote: When it’s time to leave, the sand will easily fall out. (To get sand off your baby and yourself, use baby powder . Bonus points if you keep that cool in the icebox, too.)

A parenting blog called Team Johnson also suggests this tip: Try turning a fitted sheet upside down and anchoring the four corners with something heavy to create a sand-free play area. (Your cooler and laundry basket can fill two of those corners.)

For these hacks, try the following:

  • Two pop-up mesh bags from the Simplized Store ($11.49), to lug around your beach necessities
  • An extra-large Rubbermaid laundry basket for babies to play in ($33.32)
  • A three-pack of Burt’s Bees baby powder for sand removal ($21.10)
  • A cheap fitted sheet to create a play area ($10.79)
